Okavango Mokoro Trips

Okavango Delta,  a natural wonder of epic proportions.

A mokoro trip in the Okavango Delta is a unique and traditional way of exploring this stunning wetland region in Botswana . A mokoro is a dugout canoe that is carved from a single tree trunk and is used as a mode of transportation in the delta's shallow waters.

The Okavango Delta is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, lions, buffalo, and a variety of bird species, and a mokoro trip is an excellent way to see this incredible wildlife up close. As the mokoro glides silently through the waterways, you will be able to observe the animals as they go about their daily activities.

The trips are guided by experienced polers who navigate the mokoro through the shallow waters and reeds. The pace is slow, allowing you to take in the breathtaking scenery and sounds of the delta, and to immerse yourself in the unique and peaceful environment.

In addition to wildlife viewing, a mokoro trip is also an opportunity to learn about the traditional way of life in the delta and to gain an understanding of the relationship between the people and the environment.

Overall, a mokoro trip in the Okavango Delta is a unique and unforgettable experience that offers a unique perspective on this magnificent wetland and the wildlife that call it home

Experience the Magic of Mokoro Safaris

mokoro tour operator

Many Extraordinary Journeys southern Africa safari itineraries feature mokoro rides as a unique, water-based add-on activity that offer game viewing from a fresh perspective. Based on the questions we receive from travelers, it’s clear that most folks have no idea what a mokoro is. Though the word is foreign, the concept will not be unfamiliar to those who have experienced canoeing or kayaking, or even a gondola ride. Here’s what a mokoro safari entails and why it’s pure magic.

What is a mokoro?

At a most basic level, a mokoro is a dugout canoe propelled by a solo operator (a “poler”) who stands at the back and navigates with a ngashe (pole). A mokoro follows the basic shape of a canoe and is traditionally carved out of a single tree trunk, though operators are increasingly turning to fiberglass in order to preserve large, indigenous hardwood trees. Boats measure 20 feet in length, accommodating one or two passengers seated tandem on molded plastic seats. Mokoro rides are a signature experience at properties in Botswana ’s Okavango Delta —particularly those set on permanent waterways. Excursions last an hour or so, often taking place in the morning or at sunset, before or after a game drive.

The history of mokoros

Each year, the Okavango Delta swells with water that originally fell as rain across Angola’s highlands. Meandering some 600 miles south to Botswana and arriving as flood water, it transforms the Delta into a labyrinth teeming with wildlife before draining into the sands of the Kalahari. In a place where rivers outnumber roads, mokoros have been used for generations to fish, harvest reeds and traverse the watershed.

Historically, mokoros were operated by two people—one steering seated at the stern and a poler, standing at the front, propelling it with a ngashe . Having navigated the channels on a regular basis and for most of their lives, modern boatmen have perfected the lifelong skill and are able to gracefully maneuver the mokoro at a considerable speed.

Traditionally, mokoros were built by talented craftsmen and made from moisture-resistant hardwoods like jackalberry, sausage and mangosteen. In order to achieve the right shape and buoyancy, straight, mature trees are favored. To hollow out the tree trunk, a controlled burn is performed, and historically a curved-blade tool called an adze was used to chop away at the burnt wood. (Hatchets are preferred now.) Once hollowed and proven buoyant, the trunk is then crafted into an elongated and streamlined shape with distinct points at the bow and stern.

Today, you’re just as likely to encounter mokoros made of fiberglass (some with glass bottoms for underwater viewing) which eliminates the need to extract volumes of trees from the sensitive Okavango ecosystem. What’s more, unlike their fiberglass counterparts, the lifespan of a wood canoe is just three to five years, at which point rot renders them unusable.

What makes mokoro safaris special?

Few safari experiences are enjoyed in total silence. Absent the hum of a motor or the splash of a paddle, a mokoro glides atop glassy waters, splitting reeds and parting lily pads. Traveling just above the waterline affords a whole new vantage point. Through a glass-bottom mokoro, glimpse African pike or yellow-and-green scaled nembwe darting through aquatic flora. At the waterline, zoom in to appreciate the micro critters and avian life you otherwise miss on noisy, four-wheeled safaris. In the heart of the Delta, a secluded network of waterways and islands shelter wildlife, offering encounters that aren’t otherwise accessible. Spot grazing herds of rare, swamp-dwelling sitatunga and red lechwe antelope, or observe elephants swimming shoulder-deep through a tangle of reeds teeming with tiny frogs of all colors.

Wildlife you’ll see on a mokoro safari

The Okavango Delta attracts a wide diversity of wildlife and you’re likely to encounter leopard, lion, buffalo, hyena, wild dog, hippo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, civet, serval, tsessebe, roan, sable, kudu, impala, sitatunga, semi-aquatic red lechwe, and many more. You’re assured to view elephants, too. Botswana boasts 130,000 wild ones (at last count), making this population the world’s largest.

With distinct wet and dry seasons, and varied topographies, Botswana is a siren’s call for birdlife and the enthusiasts who track them. At any given time, some 450 to 600 species of birds, both resident and migratory, are present in the Okavango Delta . Birders might spy a yellow billed kite, slaty egret, lilac breasted roller, pied kingfisher, pygmy goose, jacana, little bee eater, lesser gallinule, greater painted snipe or a rare Pel’s fishing owl.

Lodges and camps offering mokoro safaris

Whether or not a property offers mokoro rides (especially in the Okavango Delta ) depends on two things: (a) the time of year and its corresponding water level; and (b) proximity to a permanent waterway.

If a camp or lodge is located in an area where water levels are too high, or where hippos are prevalent, the property will prioritize guest safety over offering mokoro safaris.

Given these limitations, if a mokoro ride is high on your wish list here are a few properties which are able to offer them most of the year.

  • Xigera Camp
  • Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp
  • Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge
  • Little Kwara

Mokoro safari FAQs

Are mokoro rides safe.

Sitting inches above the waterline in a slow-moving boat passing through waters frequented by territorial hippos and crocodiles, it’s perfectly natural to wonder if a mokoro ride is safe.

When venturing out with an expert guide, mokoro safaris are generally considered to be safe. Guides take a great deal of care to avoid the deeper channels that hippos and crocodiles prefer, in addition to scanning for visual clues and listening for hippos’ raucous bellows, snorts and honks. (In fact, travelers who specifically want to glimpse these two species should skip a mokoro ride altogether and opt for a motorboat excursion into the Okavango’s deeper rivers and lagoons.)

Also, while a mokoro ride is something novel you’re enjoying as a tourist for (perhaps) the first time, it’s reassuring to be reminded that they’re an entire way of life for the people who call the Delta home.

mokoro tour operator

What should I bring on a mokoro safari?

Mokoro boats are small and excursions typically last an hour, so you’ll only want to bring the essentials. Bear in mind that the experience will be fairly exposed to the south African sun and reflected back by the glassy water’s surface, so adequate sun protection is important.

  • A small bag/pack
  • Brimmed hat
  • Sturdy, rubber sole footwear that can get wet
  • Seasonally, you might want to wear long sleeves/pants and bug repellent
  • Cash for tipping

Who are mokoro safaris good for?

Birdwatchers and photographers love mokoro safaris due to the boat’s ability to silently approach wildlife.

Guests will require some balance to enter and exit the boat which may be a consideration for those with mobility limitations or knee pain. Young passengers should be old enough to sit without fidgeting, as not to compromise the poler’s ability to navigate.

mokoro tour operator

What’s the best time to visit the Okavango Delta?

The Delta’s changing landscape of islands, channels and floodplains beckons to visitors year-round. Whether activities are more land-based or water-focused depends on the season and the camp’s location.

The best time to enjoy a mokoro safari is between April and October when flood water levels reach their peak. This coincides with Botswana ’s dry season (May, June, July and August observe little-to-no rainfall) when game viewing is excellent—but will come with high season pricing. Travelers visiting toward the end of dry season will experience heat in September and October when the average temperature hovers around 93°F/34°C.

How much should I tip my mokoro guide?

Our safari specialists recommend tipping your poler $5 for each passenger.

Mokoro Safaris

As the Okavango Delta floods with the seasons our safaris take to the waters. Inspired by the people of the past who used traditional wooden mokoros as a form of transport, a modern version of this dugout canoe is a relaxing way to explore the reed-lined waterways and discover smaller creatures you wouldn’t typically see from a vehicle or on foot.

A skilled “poler” will guide your mokoro with control and dexterity.

Testimonials

The Okavango Delta is an amazing place to see. We also loved the mokoro canoe tour along one of the tributaries of the delta.

From massages on my private veranda to a Moroko trip on the river - all was superb.

- Jane Bladen

One thing I would recommend is to take the Mokoro boat ride down the river. The two of you sit with a guide pushing with a long stick and you see everything from a different perspective. So peaceful and wonderful.

Soak up nature at a slower pace

Glide across mirrors of water.

Very little beats the tranquillity of gliding through narrow water channels in the company of smaller amphibians like reed frogs and dragonflies that you would usually miss out on.

  • Soak up a different point of view.
  • Catch details that would otherwise be missed.
  • See micro colourful frogs and macro-sized elephants knee-deep in water.
  • Unrivalled peace and silence.

Thousands of years ago, the Bushmen used dug-out canoes to effortlessly move around the Okavango Delta. Today, eco-friendly fibreglass versions are used for game viewing safaris and the mokoro has become the iconic symbol of the Delta. Gliding over mirror-like bodies of water in one of the most idyllic spots in the world is an experience that is quite unrivalled.

Safari from the water

A little like the gondolas of Venice, your boat poler will propel your vessel around the channels and waterways of the Delta, giving you the freedom to absorb the  diversity of its wildlife species from the comfort of your seat. From plants to birds, to insects and large animals, the mokoro is the perfect place from which to view it all.

Pack for fun in the sun

It’s easy to forget about sunburn when on the water, however sunshine reflecting off a glossy surface means that you will burn from above and below your hat. Wear sunglasses, drink lots of water to stay hydrated and regularly apply a high (50+) SPF sunscreen. Slip-proof rubber-soled shoes are recommended and don’t forget the binoculars and camera.

Drink in nature's scale

The world seems a little bit bigger when viewed from the water. You will be able to appreciate the size and scale of elephants drinking and hippos and crocodiles basking – all from the safety of your boat and the protection of a highly knowledgeable Machaba Safaris guide.

  • Mokoro Safari in Botswana

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Antoinette Booyse

Safari Travel Planner

The most intimate way to explore the Okavango’s meandering channels and hidden lagoons is on a guided mokoro safari trip. Mokoro trips are available at many water-based camps and lodges in the Okavango and Maun for self-drivers. The thought of slinking through the wild territory of hippos and crocodiles may seem a little daunting, but it helps to keep in mind that the men who guide these safaris have spent a lifetime navigating these waters and know what they’re doing.

Mokoro guides commonly choose shallow areas where there is less chance of encountering hippos and always have a scout polling ahead to keep a good lookout.

Mokoro Rides through the Okavango Delta

A mokoro safari in Botswana gives you the best chance to catch a glimpse of the rare and secretive Sitatunga antelope. Sitatunga love quiet backwaters with floating papyrus islands and usually feed while partially submerged in water.

Male sitatunga antelope hiding in water, Botswana

They are expertly adapted for swamp life with splayed, elongated hooves that enable them to tread soft marshlands with ease. When a mokoro approaches, these shy ungulates will commonly swim away, with only their nuzzles sticking out of the water.

Other fascinating creatures to look out for on a Mokoro safari are:

  • Colorful Painted Reed frogs
  • Tiny Long Reed frogs
  • Malachite and Pied kingfishers
  • Pygmy geese
  • African and lesser jacanas
  • Day and night water lilies

The whole experience was absolutely first class. Communication with the office to set up the trip was very easy and they were very responsive. On the day, our guide really made the tour very special. His expert knowledge of the game reserve and friendly conversation made for a highly enjoyable experience. Although I had been self-driving around Botswana for the rest of my trip, I saw saw much more of the wildlife and got far more out of Moremi by having such a great guide. • enzo1621 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles BETTER IMPOSSIBLE!! First of all, if you are a backpacker like me who is afraid of wasting your money you have to know that Moremi is totally worthy . Secondly, you have to know that this company is the cheapest so it is a must for you and you have to make sure put it apart from others...but more important it is that you can be certain that this company is totally reliable, I received answers very quickly about everything, they give you a detailed program, nothing is missed. The day of the activity our guide made all efforts to our needs: ( to find lions) he made everything all the time driving, very little stops just to see some footprints.... We saw 9 lions. What I can say it is that with this company won't fail, because you feel since first time you can rely on them, it is very clear. You will be charged a real fair price,( the best) half or 3 times less than others and you are going to receive a great service. So if you want to do Moremi, don't look other and just book with them, you can be totally safe, you are on the right one. Read more Written August 3, 2023

Shipungo was able to accommodate all of us, on our schedule (we had to ride to Maun that morning). All transportation and other details went very smoothly. The mokoro ride through the delta is beautiful, we highly recommend it especially for first-timers to the Okavango. There were a number of boat pilots and other staff, they cooked very nice meals even though it rained hard part of the evening. The next morning we did a two hour hike looking for wildlife, we saw zebra and buffalo (giraffes and lions took the day off); saw a LOT of hippos in the water. Price was quite reasonable. I highly recommend this trip. Read more Written April 20, 2022

Starting with the excellent organization, our experienced poler and guide with whom we had amazing experiences on our tours and the camp staff who i.a. prepared great food for us, we were very satisfied. We were also lucky not to have to share the camp with any other fellow travellers (in contrast to other tour operators who do such tours with 20 people). We would book again via Shipungo at any time and can highly recommend the company. Read more Written October 27, 2019

Upon getting to the Delta, there was a team of people waiting for us, we were taken on the Delta with a Mokoro. what an experience. they are so professional and the guide Matthew was the best ever. we received lunch, water, cooldrink and snacks as part of the package. We got to see some really cool animals up close and personal, like elephants, buffalo's, hippo's, giraffe's etc. We can highly recommend Shipungo Safari Tours, as they are an excellent team. Mokoro Ride In Botswana

A mokoro ride in botswana.

Botswana has become a favorite Southern Africa country for tourists and all this is because of the many activities that one can carry out when they visit the country and a Mokoro ride is one of those activities that you should not miss out on when you get there. Mokoro rides in Botswana are carried out in the Okavango Delta due to its large nature and the many mini water bodies that are located within it especially during the green season when the flood plains are flooded with water that is believed to flow from Angola.

A Mokoro is a canoe that is made out of wood using hands by the locals and it is made out of the best ways to explore Botswana especially during the wet season. It normally carries two passengers and a poler who pushes it around the shallow waters around so that you can get a clear view of the different parts of the country that have shallow waters. Most of the people that operate the Mokoro are always well trained as early as seven years and therefore you do not need to be worried about how safe they are. Mokoros were the only mode of transport for all Botswana before the introduction of boats and they are still used especially by the poor community to go for fishing, giving tourists rides and accessing the flooded plains within the delta.

The trees that are used to make the Mokoro always take long to grow that is about 100 years and in order to avoid their extinction, there are other materials that have been used to replace the wood. Before the Mokoro was made from wood but due to the increased deforestation, they are now made from fiber glass in order to save on the trees in the country. The best way to get or book for a Mokoro ride is from the town of Maun before heading down to the Okavango delta for a fun filled Mokoro safari. Mokoro canoes are sometimes referred to as gondolas and although they are used to traverse the Okavango delta, they are only used in places where the water is shallow that is the many swamps both seasonal and permanent and not Rivers.

Mokoro rides in Botswana are mostly done within the Okavango delta and while enjoying a Mokoro ride through the Delta there are several things that you will see that will make your Mokoro ride even more interesting. You can enjoy birding, watching the different animals that roam around the Delta and other places in the country and the Mokoro rides normally take about two hours and therefore you should be ready for the two hours ride across the delta.

The best time for one to go for Mokoro rides in Botswana is during the months of July to October because during this time, the water levels are extremely high and there is no rain to affect your ride. It is also the best time due to the fact that the animals can easily be seen on the different water body banks trying to cool off.

  • Birding while on a Mokoro ride

A Mokoro ride is one of the best ways for tourists to enjoy the birding sessions in Botswana. The silence that is associated with the Mokoro ride will help you watch the birds that habitate around the Delta and some of the birds that you get to see while enjoying a Mokoro ride include the slaty egret, the log toed lapwing, the cape vulture, the African fish skimmer, the pel’s fishing owl, kingfishers, the Bradfield’s hornbill and the African spoonbill.

  • Animal viewing

The Okavango delta especially during the green season when there are some places where you cannot reach unless when you have a Mokoro. Some of the animal species that you will see include hippos, elephants, crocodiles, both the white and black rhinos, elephants, giraffes, buffalos, lions, antelopes, Lechwe and many more other species. However you should note that the Mokoro ride does not get to some places due to the presence of hippos but you will still be provided with a great view of the whole Delta.

  • Photo safari

If you ever want to get a different view of the Okavango delta, then a Mokoro ride is your choice. The Okavango delta is best seen when you are behind the lens and this is can be done as you ride through the delta. Remember that the Mokoro takes only two passengers and as you pass through the water logged areas, you will get a chance to take photos of the different delta, the vegetation, the animals and bird species.

There are quite a lot of destinations that a Mokoro can take you and most of these are waterlogged and swampy areas especially in the Okavango Delta.

The Okavango delta Mokoro rides

Mokoro rides within the Okavango delta can be carried out throughout the year depending on which part of the delta you are in although the larger part that has seasonal Rivers and water bodies makes the Mokoro rides become seasonal but the best time for a Mokoro ride through the Okavango delta is between the months of May and October because this is the time when the water levels in the Delta are high. There are many camps within the Okavango delta that give out Mokoro rides to tourists and some of these include:

Camp Okavango

This is located in the Okavango delta and it is one of the many camps around that offer Mokoro rides around the delta. The camp has several rooms where you can rest after the Mokoro excursion and not forgetting the good tasty food that is served to tourists although you will have to first book for the Mokoro trip before you get to the camp especially during the peak season.

The Nxamaseri island lodge

The Nxamaseri island lodge is also located in the Okavango delta and it also offers Mokoro rides throughout the delta. The beauty about the Nxamaseri camp is the fishing exercise that is done almost throughout the year, birding, animal viewing and a trip to the Tsodilo hills which are prayer hills to the san people and you can do all this while you enjoy your Mokoro rides.

The Xigera camp

The Xigera camp is located in the Okavango Delta and one of the best accommodation facilities in the Delta. It offers tourists a chance to go for a Mokoro ride with it being a water camp. The Mokoro rides can be given out at any time of the day although they are best enjoyed in the mornings and late afternoons during the setting sun.

The Shinde camp

The Shinde camp has been reopened after a long time of being close for renovations. Its proximity to the Okavango River has made it easy for the tourists to be given Mokoro rides around the delta. There are several tents from which you can rest and the restaurant provides you with some of their best dishes. During your Mokoro ride, there are several animals like the roan antelope, the bird species, go out fishing and other sight-seeing activities all while sitting in a wooden canoe made for two.

The Vumbura plains camp

The Vumbura plains camp are located at a strategic location with a good view of the whole Okavango Delta. There are enough rooms to accommodate everyone and the Mokoro rides here are majorly given to the resident tourists who are using the camp. The ride always starts in the morning and sometimes in the evening with a good and knowledgeable tour guide who knows where to take you so that you enjoy your Mokoro safari while in Botswana.

The Moremi crossing

The Moremi crossing is located in the Moremi game reserve which is found in the Okavango delta and one of the many camps that you can use when you visit Moremi. The camp provides its guests with a lot of activities to make sure that they enjoy their safari in Botswana and one of those activities is the Mokoro ride. A Mokoro ride here will leave you with a great view of the whole delta and you will get to see many wild life species that habitate within the delta.

You will need tour guides when heading out into the Mokoros because even if you have polers with you as you head out, a tour guide will be able to explain more at length about what you will be seeing while on the Mokoro safari and they will also help you avoid all the areas that are infested with hippos and crocodiles. For all those that want a quiet time while on a safari in Botswana with your loved ones, a Mokoro ride is the best and this is because of the quiet time that you get while watching the wild life and enjoying the sunset and the only noise you see is from the animals around.

Mokoro activity

Glide through the maze of channels, islands and opaque lagoons on a traditional mokoro dugout canoe and enjoy the seasonal beauty of the Okavango Delta. The 20-foot canoes sport distinct edges at the bow and stern and can cater for up to two passengers at a time. This exclusive guest list ensures an intimate excursion during which you can appreciate the quiet motion of the vessel as it glides across the still, dark water.

Mekoro was traditionally hand carved out of the huge Okavango Delta trees, but are now made out of environmentally friendly fibre-glass in an effort to adopt sustainable practices in the region. Guests sit in front of a trained guide and oarsman, who stands firm at the boat’s stern, manually propelling the vessel with a ngashi pole, whittled from the branches of terminalia trees. Polers, as they’re fondly referred to, are introduced to mekoro from early childhood, expertly manoeuvring the narrow boat with precision, grace and speed.

The month of June completely transforms the ordinarily dry and arid Moremi into a bustling oasis. The river floods, creating a maze of waterways and lagoons where delicate lilies shyly float above the shadowy surface. Explore the Okavango Delta, sitting mere centimetres above the smooth, clear water, as you silently pass by unsuspecting wildlife. Marvel at stout hippos as they fight over territory and crocodiles that stealthily stalk unsuspecting prey drinking deeply at the water’s edge. At the heart of the Delta lies a secluded network of waterways and islands where life slows down even further. Witness life from a new perspective, following routes taken by the river Bushmen and BaYei people for centuries and used to this day by local tribes, who still travel by mokoro. Encounter grazing herds of rare swamp-dwelling sitatunga and red lechwe antelope, as well as elephants that tower over islands fringed with palms. Watch in awe as these majestic beasts submerge neck-deep, swimming through a network of reeds inhabited by tiny frogs of all colours, all under the watchful eye of the elegant African fish eagle.

*Please note: This activity may be seasonal depending on where you are staying and your month of travel. Water levels change yearly and weather patterns are unpredictable.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
