Oasis shot from obscurity to stardom in 1994, becoming one of Britain’s most popular and critically acclaimed bands of the decade in the process.
Along with Blur and Suede, they were responsible for returning British guitar pop to the top of the charts.
Led by guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher, the Manchester quintet adopted the rough, thuggish image of the Stones and the Who, crossed it with “Beatlesque” melodies and hooks, injected distinctly British lyrical themes and song structures like the Jam and the Kinks.
It all tied together with a massive guitar roar, as well as a defiant sneer that drew equally from the Sex Pistols’ rebelliousness and the Stone Roses’ cocksure arrogance.
Gallagher’s songs frequently reworked previous hits from T. Rex (“Cigarettes and Alcohol” borrows the riff from “Bang a Gong”) to Wham! (“Fade Away” takes the melody from “Freedom”), yet the group always put the hooks in different settings, updating past hits for a new era.

Oasis were an English rock music band formed in Manchester in 1991. They evolved from an earlier band called the Rain, composed of Paul McGuigan (bass guitar), Paul Arthurs (guitar), Tony McCarroll (drums) and Chris Hutton (vocals). Unsatisfied with Hutton, Arthurs invited and auditioned acquaintance Liam Gallagher as a replacement. Liam suggested that the band name be changed to Oasis. This change was inspired by an Inspiral Carpets tour poster that hung in the Gallagher brothers' bedroom. One of the venues the poster listed was the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon, Wiltshire.
Oasis played their first ever live gig on 18 August 1991 at the Boardwalk club in Manchester. Liam's brother Noel Gallagher, who was a roadie for Inspiral Carpets, went with the band to watch his younger brother's band play. Whilst Noel and his friends did not think Oasis sounded particularly spectacular, he did begin to consider the possibility of using his brother's group as a possible outlet for a series of songs he had been writing for several years. Noel approached the group about joining with the proviso that he would become the band's sole songwriter and leader, and that they would commit to an earnest pursuit of commercial success. "He had loads of stuff written," Arthurs recalled. "When he walked in, we were a band making a racket with four tunes. All of a sudden, there were loads of ideas." Oasis under Noel Gallagher crafted a musical approach that relied on simplicity, with Arthurs and McGuigan restricted to playing barre chords and root bass notes; McCarroll playing basic rhythms, and the band's amplifiers turned up to create distortion, Oasis created a sound "so devoid of finesse and complexity that it came out sounding pretty much unstoppable." Oasis have had eight UK number-one singles and eight UK number-one albums, and won fifteen NME Awards, nine Q Awards, four MTV Europe Music Awards and six Brit Awards. By 2009, the band had sold over 70 million records worldwide.

Liam Gallagher Announces Summer 2024 Tour Where He Will Perform Oasis' Debut Album 'Definitely Maybe'
The former Oasis singer will perform the album in full in honor of its 30th anniversary
Dave J Hogan/Getty
Liam Gallagher will definitely be bringing back an old favorite.
In an Instagram post , the British singer-songwriter, 51, announced the Definitely Maybe 30 Years Tour — a small 2024 string of shows where Gallagher will perform Oasis' former band’s debut LP, Definitely Maybe .
"I'm bouncing around the house to announce the Definitely Maybe Tour. The most important album of the ‘90s bar none. I wouldn't be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let’s celebrate together LG x," he wrote alongside a tour poster.
The tour is set to launch June 2 in Sheffield and will run through June 27, where it concludes in Manchester.
Liam will also be visiting cities including London, Dublin and Glasgow, Scotland, along the way.
In the post, he revealed that tickets for the tour will go on sale Oct. 20 on Friday, 9 a.m. BST.
Next year's tour will be the first time the "Wall of Glass" musician performed Definitely Maybe since the band split in 2009.
Definitely Maybe , which was released in 1994, solidified Oasis as one of Britpop's biggest stars, producing longtime favorite tracks like "Supersonic," "Live Forever" and "Slide Away.
At the time, it was the fastest-selling debut album in the U.K. ever, and it sold 8.5 million copies worldwide.

Though it seems unlikely Liam's brother and Oasis bandmate Noel will be joining him for any of the dates, but in May, Noel, 56, spoke with SPIN about the prospect of performing the band's debut album.
“If Liam wants to do the show, great. He’s got to make a living and all of that,” he told the outlet. “Keep the flame alive. It’s not something I particularly would be able to put my heart and soul into.”
As Liam told fans who inquired about Noel on X Tuesday, "He’s been asked and he’s refused."

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports
N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.
Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.
Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.
Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .
The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.
Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.
The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .
Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.
One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.
Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."
The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .
Knewz.com reported previously:
“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.
The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].
One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”
The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.
Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.
Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.
Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .
Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.
The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.
Duration: 2 hours
Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing
This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.
Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.
Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.
Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.
Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.
