A woman on a cruise ship that departed from Port Canaveral Sunday was killed by a shark in the Bahamas Tuesday, according to law enforcement authorities.

The incident involved a 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania and occurred at a popular snorkeling spot near Green Cay in the northern Bahamas, police spokeswoman Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told The Associated Press. Skippings said the woman’s family identified it as a bull shark.

The attack occurred Tuesday while on an "independent shore excursion" in Nassau, according to Royal Caribbean International.

"Sadly, the guest passed away after arriving at a local hospital for treatment," a Royal Caribbean International representative told FLORIDA TODAY. "Royal Caribbean International is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones at this time."

The ship, Harmony of the Sea, is continuing on its seven-night journey.

The majority of shark attacks in the Caribbean have occurred in the Bahamas, with two reported in 2019, one of them fatal. That incident involved a Southern California woman who was on vacation and was attacked by three sharks near Rose Island, located just a half mile from where Tuesday’s attacked occurred.

In December 2020, a fatal shark attack was reported in the French Caribbean territory of St. Martin, the first such incident in that region.

Overall, at least 32 shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1749, followed by 13 attacks in Cuba during that time period, including one in 2019, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

Michael Heithaus, a marine biologist at Florida International University in Miami, said that the high number of attacks in the Bahamas is likely linked to the fact that there are a lot of people in the water in that area and that it has a robust marine ecosystem.

He said the Bahamas has a variety of shark species, the majority of which do not pay attention to people, except for bull sharks and tiger sharks.

“They get to very large sizes, and they eat big prey,” Heithaus said, adding that sharks have incredible sensory systems and can be attracted to food, sounds and smells in the water.

But overall, shark attacks remain rare, he stressed.

Worldwide, there were 137 shark attacks last year, 73 of them unprovoked, according to the International Shark Attack File.

Royal Caribbean Group (RCL) confirmed Tuesday that one of its guests had been killed following a shark attack in the Bahamas.

One family’s vacation was marred by tragedy when a 58-year-old woman was attacked by a bull shark while on a snorkeling excursion. The incident occurred at a popular destination known as Green Cay, just off the shore of Rose Island, at approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. The woman was rushed to the hospital but did not survive the injuries she had sustained.

According to NBC News , approximately 5-7 other people were snorkeling with the unidentified woman. During a news conference, Royal Bahamas Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said that family members had witnessed the attack and helped to pull the victim from the water. She was then taken by boat to Fort Montagu Hospital.

shark

Bull sharks — which typically run between 7.5 and 11 feet in length — are naturally aggressive. Because they favor shallow, coastal waters (as do snorkelers), they are the type of shark most often associated with attacks on humans.

Royal Caribbean Offering Family Support

harmony of the seas

In confirming the news, Royal Caribbean said that the woman had been a passenger aboard Harmony of the Seas , which is in the midst of a seven-night sailing out of Port Canaveral, Florida. The cruise line indicated that the woman was on an independent shore excursion, meaning one that was not sold through or sanctioned by the line itself. This is, of course, not at all uncommon, as many cruise guests — no matter the destination — often make plans with independent contractors.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean Group added that they were “providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

“Sadly, the guest passed away after arriving at a local hospital for treatment,” the cruise line said in a statement. “Royal Caribbean International is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones at this time.”

Several media outlets have reported that the victim was a 58-year-old Pennsylvania woman. No other injuries were reported.

The beach where the attack occurred has been closed.

Harmony of the Seas is on a seven-night cruise, having set sail Sunday from Port Canaveral.

According to the International Shark Attack File , the odds of getting fatally attacked by a shark are less than 1 in 4 million.

Last year, there were 73 confirmed unprovoked shark attack cases worldwide, including 47 in the United States, which has the most documented unprovoked bites in the world, according to the International Shark Attack File.

Pennsylvania woman attacked and killed by a shark while snorkeling in the Bahamas

A close-up view of a bull shark.

By Madison Selcho

A 58-year-old woman was attacked and killed by a shark while snorkeling on a cruise vacation in the Bahamas. The woman, whose name was not released, was snorkeling off the coast of Nassau in Green Cay when she was attacked by a bull shark.

NBC News reported that the woman was a passenger on the Royal Caribbean ship Harmony of the Seas and was traveling with her family, who had planned to snorkel at a popular spot in the area, according to Royal Bahamas Police Force Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings.

CNN reported that eyewitnesses said they saw a shark attacking the woman and immediately went to help. By the time they got to her, the woman had suffered bites to her “upper extremities,” Skippings said.

Tour company workers and family members pulled the woman out of the water and rushed to the nearest dock, where paramedics began to treat her. The paramedics reported no vital signs of life as they got her to shore, brought her to the hospital and began to treat her, according to The Associated Press .

The cruise line made a statement after the attack, saying, “Royal Caribbean is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

The Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida reported that bull sharks are the most commonly known sharks to make unprovoked attacks on humans. The last recorded shark attacks in the Bahamas were two separate attacks reported in 2019 where one was attacked by Rose Island that is about a half mile from Green Cay.

Michael Heithaus, a marine biologist at Florida International University in Miami, said in an Associated Press phone interview that the high number of attacks in this region is linked to a high number of people in a “robust marine ecosystem.”

Heithaus explained that there are many different types of sharks that swim in those waters, but only the bull and tiger sharks really pay attention to people.

“They get to very large sizes and they eat big prey,” Heithaus said.

Heithaus also added that bull and tiger sharks are more likely to be attracted toward people through different factors including smells in the water, food and even sounds. Despite these factors, Heithaus also emphasized that shark attacks are rare.

According to the International Shark Attack File , there were 73 unprovoked shark attacks out of a total of 137 attacks last year.

A guest on a Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas cruise was killed while on an excursion in the Bahamas Tuesday, according to a spokesperson for the company. According to NBC News , Royal Bahamas police said the guest was a 58-year-old Pennsylvania woman that had gone snorkeling with friends when a bull shark attacked her at about 2 p.m. at Green Cay.

Family members witnessed the attack and helped the tour operator pull her out of the water. CNN reports the woman has suffered injuries to her "upper extremities."

She had no signs of life after the attack and died before arriving at the hospital, the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.

WICU , sourcing an Erie, Pennsylvania, university, identified the victim as Caroline DiPlacido. She was reportedly a project coordinator for the school's Office of Community and Government Relations, Erie Campus.

"Caroline was a powerful presence of kindness and friendship to colleagues, students, and the wider community and cherished many family ties to Gannon. The news is devastating, and she will be missed. We pray for Caroline as she crosses over to eternity. We pray for her husband, David, her children, David, Robert and Allison, her mother, Olivia, and her wider family. Let us remember Caroline with affection and hope," a statement from Gannon University reads.

The ship sailed out Sept. 4 from Port Canaveral. It was a seven-night cruise.

"It's just an unfortunate situation," Royal Bahamas Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said.

Skippings said DiPlacido's family identified the animal as a bull shark.

The area was roped off and closed indefinitely to snorkelers.

"Royal Caribbean is providing support and assistance to the guest's loved ones during this difficult time," a statement from the cruise line said.

Officials say the death will not impact the Harmony of the Seas' itinerary, meaning it will not be returning early.

Cruise ship passenger killed by shark while snorkeling in the Bahamas

By CBS Miami Team

September 6, 2022 / 10:54 PM EDT / AP

MIAMI - A shark attacked and killed a Royal Caribbean cruise ship passenger who was snorkeling in the Bahamas.

The incident involved a 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania and occurred Tuesday at a popular snorkeling spot near Green Cay in the northern Bahamas, police spokeswoman Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told The Associated Press.

"It's unfortunate," she said.

Skippings said the woman's family identified it as a bull shark.

Royal Caribbean International said in a statement to the AP that the person died after arriving at a local hospital for treatment and that the company is helping their loved ones. They said the guest was participating in an independent shore excursion in Nassau and had been sailing on Harmony of the Seas, which is on a seven-night trip after departing Florida on Sunday.

The majority of shark attacks in the Caribbean have occurred in the Bahamas, with two reported in 2019, one of them fatal. That incident involved a Southern California woman who was on vacation and was attacked by three sharks near Rose Island, located just a half mile from where Tuesday's attack occurred.

Michael Heithaus, a marine biologist at Florida International University in Miami, said in a phone interview that the high number of attacks in the Bahamas is likely linked to the fact that there are a lot of people in the water in that area and that it has a robust marine ecosystem.

He said the Bahamas has a variety of shark species, the majority of which do not pay attention to people, except for bull sharks and tiger sharks.

"They get to very large sizes, and they eat big prey," Heithaus said, adding that sharks have incredible sensory systems and can be attracted to food, sounds, and smells in the water.

But overall, shark attacks remain rare, he stressed.

Worldwide, there were 137 shark attacks last year, 73 of them unprovoked, according to the International Shark Attack File.

US woman killed in shark attack while paddleboarding in Bahamas: Police

The victim, who was not identified, was attacked less than a mile off the western end of new providence island, where the capital, nassau, is located, by ap • published december 4, 2023 • updated on december 4, 2023 at 11:16 pm.

A female tourist from Boston was killed Monday by a shark while paddleboarding in the Bahamas, police told reporters.

The victim, who was not identified, was attacked less than a mile off the western end of New Providence island, where the capital, Nassau, is located. She was paddleboarding with a man who was not injured, according to Police Sgt. Desiree Ferguson.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences…for this most unfortunate situation,” she said.

Police said a lifeguard rescued both people with a boat upon seeing what was happening, but the woman suffered serious injuries to the right side of her body and was declared dead at the scene despite CPR efforts.

It was not immediately clear what type of shark attacked the woman. A police superintendent did not immediately respond to a message requesting comment.

Gavin Naylor, program director of the International Shark Attack File in Florida, said in an interview that there have been a couple of shark-related fatalities reported in the Bahamas in the past five years.

He noted that the Bahamas has a "huge" tourist population, adding that there are a lot of people in the water and a lot of visitors who want to view sharks from a fishing boat or dive with them.

“So the sharks get acclimated, and the animals are a little bit less cautious than they otherwise might be,” he said.

Between 30 to 40 shark species live around the Bahamas, although the Caribbean reef shark, the bull shark, the tiger shark and the black tip shark have the highest bite frequency, Naylor said.

“Usually, it’s an accidental bite. They think it’s something else,” he said. “Once in a while, they’ll actually single out people, and it’s very intentional.”

Fatal shark attacks are rare, with only an average of five to six reported worldwide a year, most of them occurring in Australia, Naylor said. Last year, there were a total of 57 unprovoked bites around the globe, the majority of them in the U.S., according to the International Shark Attack File.

At least 33 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1580, with the island ranking ninth worldwide, according to the file.

The Nassau Guardian newspaper reported that authorities in the Bahamas are still searching for a German woman who went missing late last month after she was apparently attacked while diving.

Last year, a shark killed a U.S. cruise ship passenger from Pennsylvania who was snorkeling in the northern Bahamas near Green Cay.

Most shark attacks in the Caribbean occur in the Bahamas, although a rare shark attack was reported in the French Caribbean territory of St. Martin three years ago.

24-year-old speaks out after falling into shark-filled marina: 'I got very lucky'

Marlin Wakeman was working on a boat docked in a Bahamas marina.

While working on a boat docked in the Bahamas a couple weeks ago, Marlin Wakeman was jumping onto the vessel when it surged in the water and he slipped off the boat into the marina.

"I knew what was coming," Wakeman said.

In a matter of seconds, the 24-year-old Floridian was able to pull himself back up onto the boat -- but not before a Caribbean reef shark bit his leg.

The boat was docked at the Flying Fish Marina in Long Island, which regularly draws sharks thanks to the abundance of fish carcasses discarded by fishermen, Wakeman said.

PHOTO: Shark bite victim Marlin Wakeman addresses reporters at St. Mary’s Medical Center, May 9, 2024, in West Palm Beach, Fla.

"There's at all times 20 sharks roaming around," Wakeman told reporters during a press briefing Thursday at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he was treated for his shark bite. "Me and my buddies were talking about like, man, if you fell in here, like, you are done."

He said the shark pulled him under the water then let go of his leg, and he was able to pull himself onto the boat before another shark bit him.

"I had so much adrenaline going through my body," he said.

MORE: Family of shark attack survivor speaks out in ‘GMA’ exclusive interview

Wakeman said his boat captain tied a tourniquet on his leg once he got out of the water. Once the adrenaline wore off, he started to feel a lot of pain.

"I said, 'Hey man, like, I really don't want to die right now,'" he said he told his captain. "Like, this ain't it."

He went to a nearby clinic for "damage control" -- where they stitched up the wound to stop the bleeding -- before traveling to St. Mary's Medical Center for surgery, according to Dr. Robert Borrego, a trauma surgeon at the hospital.

Judging by the circumference of the bite wound, Borrego estimated that the shark that bit Wakeman was at least 7 feet. The shark punctured the kneecap and just missed a nearby artery, Borrego said.

The team worked to clear out the wound due to the risk of infection and repaired the joint injury, Borrego said. Wakeman is expected to make a full recovery, he said.

"The fact that there's 20 sharks in there and you were able to get out of there and still have a leg is amazing," Borrego, who said he treats several shark bite victims a year, told reporters. "I think that is it almost to say how quickly he reacted and that he didn't panic."

PHOTO: Shark bite victim Marlin Wakeman addresses reporters at St. Mary’s Medical Center, May 9, 2024, in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Wakeman's parents said they knew there was always a risk their son could get bitten by a shark since he works on the water, but they were still shocked to get the news when it happened.

"I know what they're capable of," his father, Rufus Wakeman, a boat captain, told reporters. "I have several friends who have been bitten and it's a shocking revelation when you see some of the wounds these people have had to endure and now it's my son. It's our son. And it is just scary."

His parents thanked everyone involved, from the crew on the boat to the doctors at the clinic and hospital.

"We're just very grateful to be able to be here, that Marlin gets to tell his story," his mother, Melynda Wakeman, told reporters.

MORE: 10 people killed in unprovoked shark attacks last year, report finds

Wakeman said he is also thankful to be able to share his shark encounter.

"They're an apex predator and if they bite you, it can be pretty ugly," he said. "I got very lucky and it could have turned out to be a completely different, you know, outcome."

Asked by a reporter how this might affect him going forward, Wakeman said he might "have some nightmares here and there" but thinks he will be OK.

"I would just maybe take another two seconds to be a little bit more careful when I jumped on the boat," he said.

44-Foot Whale Found Dead on Bow of Cruise Ship Coming Into New York

The endangered sei whale, usually found in deep waters, was discovered on the bow of a cruise ship as it arrived at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, marine authorities said.

The Statue of Liberty is seen in the background behind a sign for the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

By Livia Albeck-Ripka

As the cruise ship approached New York on Saturday, it was found to be carrying a grim, and unexpected, catch: The carcass of a 44-foot-long endangered whale, draped across its bow.

The whale, which marine authorities described as a sei whale, is known for its rapid swimming and preference for deep waters, far from the coast. Its body was discovered as the ship neared the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, and the authorities were “immediately notified,” said MSC Cruises, which owns the ship.

A spokeswoman for the company said in an email that it had “comprehensive measures” in place to avoid such collisions, including training deck officers and altering itineraries in certain areas to avoid them. “We will continue to evaluate and update our procedures with our partners and the authorities,” she said.

Marine authorities said that they had towed the animal, estimated to weigh some 50,000 pounds, from the bow, and transferred it by boat to a beach in Sandy Hook, N.J., where they conducted a necropsy on Tuesday.

The investigation is continuing, but preliminary results — broken bones in the whale’s right flipper; tissue trauma along its right shoulder blade; a full stomach and decent layer of blubber — all pointed toward the animal having been in otherwise good health when it was likely struck and killed by the ship, said Robert A. DiGiovanni, the chief scientist of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, which is leading the investigation .

The whale was already “pretty decomposed” by the time scientists began the necropsy, he added, so they worked quickly to collect samples that could be tested for contaminants and other biotoxins that would indicate any other relevant health issues. “It looks like the animal was alive and it was hit by a vessel,” he said, noting that investigators had not ruled out other factors.

Mr. DiGiovanni said that his conservation group, which is federally authorized to respond to marine mammal strandings in New York, had dealt with more than 100 whales over the past several years, many of which had been entangled in nets or struck by vessels. Most of those whales were humpback and North Atlantic right whales, he added, noting that it was more uncommon to come across a sei whale.

Sei whales usually live in subtropical, temperate and subpolar waters and are named after the Norwegian word for pollock, “seje,” because the mammals are often found together with the fish. Their long, sleek bodies are usually dark blue or black with a cream-colored underside, and are often scarred by shark and lamprey bites.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the whales were commercially hunted for their meat and oil, decimating their population, which is now designated as depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act .

Mr. DiGiovanni said that the death was a reminder that humans shared the open water with many other mammals. “When you’re out there, these animals might be there,” he said. “We need to make people more aware about how to operate around these animals.”

A spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said by email that mariners along the East Coast were encouraged to slow down their vessels, stay alert, and report any sightings of dead, injured or entangled whales to the authorities.

Cruise Ship Worker Accused of Stabbing 3 Passengers with Scissors After 'Exhibiting Unusual Behavior'

The South African man -- who was arrested by the FBI -- allegedly "grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the woman multiple times in the arm, hand and face."

A cruise ship employee has been accused of stabbing three passengers on board a vessel bound for Alaska.

Ntando Sogoni, who is from South Africa, was arrested by the FBI on criminal charges after he allegedly attacked three people with medical scissors, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Alaska .

Per court docs, Sogoni was working on the vessel when his other workers saw him attempting to release a lifeboat. After they contacted security, he was escorted to the ship's medical center, where he allegedly "attacked" multiple people.

"Upon arrival, Sogoni physically attacked a security guard and a male nurse inside an examination room and proceeded to enter another examination room where a woman, who is a U.S. citizen, was being examined," the U.S. Attorney's Office wrote in the press release. "He grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the woman multiple times in the arm, hand and face. He also stabbed two security guards who intervened -- one in the head and one in the back and shoulders."

He was then detained and held in the ship's jail, before he was arrested by the FBI.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Sogoni has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. If he's found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.

"A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors," the press release noted.

In an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy obtained by NBC News , Sogoni had just recently been hired and boarded the Norweigan Encore in Seattle on May 5. The vessel set sail that Sunday for a weeklong cruise in several ports in Alaska and British Columbia.

Norwegian Cruise Line addressed the alleged incident in a statement shared with PEOPLE , telling the outlet they will "assist the relevant authorities in the ongoing investigation."

"On May 6, 2024, a newly employed crew member was observed exhibiting unusual and irrational behavior," the company said. "The ship's security team escorted the crew member to the medical center for evaluation and assessment, where he became violent without provocation, attacking two other crew members and a guest. The security team quickly detained him, and the onboard medical staff treated those involved for non-life-threatening injuries."

"The relevant law enforcement authorities were immediately contacted and took custody of the crew member once the ship arrived in Juneau, Alaska," it continued. "We condemn violent behavior of this nature and are committed to the safety and security of all crew members and guests on our ships. We commend the onboard security team for their brave actions."

"Senior ship leadership have been actively engaged and continue to closely monitor all involved with the support of senior company executives who immediately traveled to Juneau to meet, escort and assist the guest," the cruise line concluded.

Endangered 44-foot whale likely killed by massive cruise ship, dragged into nyc port: experts.

A massive cruise ship likely struck and killed an endangered whale before sailing into the East River Saturday morning — and there’s no telling how long the dead mammal was dragged by the boat before it was discovered, according to marine experts.

The 44-foot adult female Sei whale was found as the MSC Meraviglia docked at the Port of Brooklyn, a spokesperson for MSC cruises confirmed.

The unlucky cetacean was removed from the 19-deck ship and towed to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, Tuesday for a necropsy, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez — but emphasized it is too soon to tell whether or not the whale was dead before impact.

A dead Sei whale being brought to the shore in Sandy Hook, New Jersey on May 9, 2024 after it was likely struck and killed by a large cruise ship.

Rob DiGiovanni, the founder and chief scientist of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, however, told The Post it was more than likely that the “interaction with the vessel contributed to her death.”

“It looks like she was eating,” DiGiovanni said, indicating she was a healthy whale with relatively fresh food in her stomach.

The hulking Meraviglia — the same ship that rescued 24 distressed Cuban migrants from a boat off the coast of Florida last year — weighs 171,600 gross tonage and stands 214 feet tall.

When and where the whale was struck remains a mystery, but Sei whales are typically observed in deeper waters far from the coastline, according to NOAA.

They are one of the largest whale species and are internationally protected, with vessel strikes listed as one of the biggest threats to its dwindling population.

According to an expert, it is likely that "interaction with the vessel contributed to her death."

The body was “pretty decomposed,” DiGiovanni revealed, but said that does not help professionals lock down a timeline of its death.

The temperature of the water, especially on the higher side, can accelerate the decomposition process by days.

The tragic event is unfortunately not uncommon, according to DiGiovanni, but it’s nearly impossible to track just how often it occurs because the whales could sink to the bottom of the ocean floor after being struck.

The Sei whale was "pretty decomposed" when it was discovered.

Ship staff or guests also might not even notice a striking, considering just how large cruise vessels stand, making even the world’s largest mammal look like an ant.

Such strikes could contribute to the unusual mortuary event in the New York Bight Apex — the waters from Fire Island to the Manasquan Inlet in New Jersey.

Starting in 2016, humpback, Mackey and North Atlantic Right whale deaths skyrocketed from one to three per year to 12 to 14 per year, DiGiovanni said.

The shocking death surge is a tragic side effect of whales flocking to Big Apple waters in higher numbers per year, creating a Catch-22 situation.

5th largest cruise ship in the world with a passenger capacity of 4,500 MSC Meraviglia, owned and operated by MSC Cruises, sails under 25 de Abril bridge while sailing on the Tagus River out of harbor on October 01, 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal

While some stay year-round, the amount of whales enjoying the East River jumps as spring rolls around.

“We start to see increases in whale sightings now, so we urge boaters to use caution in the waters,” DiGiovanni said, encouraging ship captains to consider the “Slow: Children at Play” mentality when taking on the open seas.

NOAA reiterated this sentiment: “Mariners operating along the US East Coast are encouraged to slow their vessel speed, stay alert, and report any sightings of right whales or any dead, injured, or entangled whales.”

Carnival cancels 2 planned cruises from Port Canaveral after ship catches fire

Passengers on a Carnival cruise ship that caught fire over the weekend disembarked at Port Canaveral on Monday.

▶ WATCH CHANNEL 9 EYEWITNESS NEWS

Videos sent to Ch. 9 show dark smoke and flames coming from the Carnival Freedom’s exhaust funnel on Saturday.

Carnival says lightning may be to blame.

In response to this fire, the next two cruises on the ship have been canceled.

Read: 2 crew members killed on Holland America cruise ship during incident onboard

The ship was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday, and then again on Friday.

The fire was reported while the ship was near the Bahamas.

Passengers reported seeing lightning strike the boat, but the investigation is still underway.

Read: New cruise line coming to Port Canaveral this year

Carnival Cruise Lines released the following statement:

Carnival Freedom experienced a fire in the port side of the exhaust funnel on Saturday. Our onboard team acted quickly to contain and put out the fire. While we continue to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike, our technical team completed a thorough assessment during the ship’s visit to Freeport today. Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral.

The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs.

We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both cancelled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support.

Mom on plane ‘kicked and beat her two-year-old daughter like a rag doll’

The mother is accused of shaking her daughter 'like a rag doll' on a Delta Air Lines flight on May 1

A mother is accused of kicking and shaking her young daughter ‘like a rag doll’ while on a plane.

Breanna Mistler, 33, allegedly beat her child after she woke up on a Delta Air Lines flight from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Seattle, according to federal court documents obtained by FOX 10 .

Mistler shouted, ‘Shut the f*** up’, at her daughter, state the documents, prompting other passengers to try to protect the toddler.

The mother then told the passengers to ‘mind your f***ing business’, according to the papers.

The mother allegedly battered her toddler on an Delta Air Lines flight

Mistler was in an aisle seat and her daughter was in a window seat, according to the US Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Washington .

‘The child woke-up Mistler, who then turned and allegedly kicked the child. At another point in the flight a witness reported Mistler allegedly shook the child “like a rag doll,”’ stated the office.

‘Despite interventions from passengers, Mistler allegedly persisted in the abuse.’

Mistler was arrested by Custom and Border Protection officers when the plane landed on May 1.

Her daughter had several bruises, according to prosecutors.

‘Even by the horrific standards of child abuse cases, this is shocking,’ wrote prosecutors wrote in the criminal complaint.

‘It is also the second time in six months that Mistler was charged with endangering her child.’

Mistler in December allegedly took her daughter with her as she burglarized her mother’s home and slashed tires of her vehicle.

Mistler’s daughter was taken to a victim witness specialist and later brought by Child Protective Services to a relative.

Her mother, of Sacramento, California , has been charged with misdemeanor assault.

A judge ordered Mistler to be held at a federal detention center at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport because she ‘had committed the assaults in front of so many people on a lengthy plane trip’, stated the US Attorney’s Office

Mistler’s preliminary examination is set for May 16.

Anchorage welcomes first cruise ship of 2024 season

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Nearly 2,000 passengers from Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam arrived Thursday morning, walking down a gangway at the Don Young Port of Alaska to find a chilly morning in Anchorage.

Passengers from the ship had 14 hours to explore the city and its surroundings and some planned to make the most of it despite the thin layer of fresh snow on the ground.

“I have seven friends and family with me celebrating my 60th birthday,” said a woman who hailed from St. Louis, Missouri. “So I’m the de facto tour guide. Today we are going to the Alaska Wildlife Center, Portage Glacier, Turnagain Arm, we are just going to have a great time in Anchorage.”

The Nieuw Amsterdam’s visit is one of just three port calls that Anchorage will see this summer — including one in June and a third in July — but according to leaders with the Anchorage Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, known as Visit Anchorage, those stops represent just a small portion of the cruise visitors that Anchorage will see this summer.

“There is a cruise ship visitor in Anchorage pretty much every day starting from April 22 all the way through the middle of September,” said Jack Bonney, vice president of destination services at Visit Anchorage.

According to Bonney, cruise ship passengers make up about half of all visitors in Southcentral Alaska, which is anticipated to see about 450,000 cruise visitors this summer. The majority, he said, are on weeklong trips that begin or end in Whittier or Seward.

Those passengers, according to Bonney, often take trips before or after their cruise to visit Anchorage and beyond.

“Those seven-day one-way trips, that’s where you really have the opportunity to say, ‘I’m going to add a couple of days. I’m going to get to Denali, I’m going to see Kenai Fjords I’m not back on the boat as soon as the day is over,’” Bonney said. “So all of those things are really important.”

Bonney said tourism in general is expected to be strong this summer, which is good news for local businesses. In Downtown Anchorage, the doors to most businesses were already wide open as early-season visitors descended on the streets.

“Tourism is a huge part of our economy, it’s something like 1 in 9 jobs for Anchorage,” Bonney said. “And it means hundreds of millions of dollars in direct spending, from everything from gift shops to restaurants to car rentals to hotels.”
