Manchester United signs official travel partnership deal with Sportsbreaks

Parth Tagai

Manchester United has announced a deal with Sportsbreaks.com for becoming the club’s official travel supplier. From the 2021/22 season, Sportsbreaks.com will provide Match Break packages, including an official ticket and a choice of overnight accommodation for games at Old Trafford once crowds are back to full capacity in the UK and Europe.

Sportsbreaks.com will also offer Official Supporter Travel services for Manchester United season ticket holders and Executive Club members for domestic and European away games. They will be the exclusive provider of Match Break packages, ensuring that there is only one place to go if you are a Manchester United supporter looking for the perfect experience to enjoy a game at Old Trafford, with an overnight stay, and opportunity to take in everything else Manchester has to offer.

Rob Slawson, Director of Sports Travel at Clarity Travel and Sportsbreaks.com, said, “Manchester United is a global sporting icon with an incredible history, as well as a dedicated global fanbase and we are delighted to offer fans the best and safest possible supporter travel and are working closely with the club to ensure that fans from the UK and internationally can enjoy unique and memorable sporting experiences.

Manchester United’s Chief Operating Officer, Collette Roche, said “Offering bespoke matchday packages will give fans at home and abroad the chance to take in the full Manchester United experience, with Sportsbreaks.com creating unforgettable moments for our passionate fans.”

Sportsbreaks.com has previously signed similar deals with other Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Everton, and Liverpool. They also provide similar kinds of packages for many different sports including Cricket, Formula One, Rugby, Tennis, NFL, Darts.

Manchester United has developed a robust system of sponsorship deals that would have helped them to cope with the pandemic. Man United boasts the biggest stadium in England, so not having fans in the stadium has affected the club’s revenue. They have managed to broker a record sports sponsorship deal during the pandemic by agreeing to a deal with tech giant Teamviewer . However, the recent protests against the club’s owners saw them miss out on a reported £200 million deal for training kit deal.

How Manchester United plan for a European away tie, on and off the pitch

NICOSIA, CYPRUS - OCTOBER 06: Marcus Rashford of Manchester United celebrates scoring their third goal with Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United during the UEFA Europa League group E match between Omonia Nikosia and Manchester United at GSP Stadium on October 06, 2022 in Nicosia, Cyprus. (Photo by Ash Donelon/Manchester United via Getty Images)

Having lost all three of their group games so far, including two at home, Omonia Nicosia might well be the weakest team Manchester United play this season, depending on the FA Cup draw. But United leave nothing to chance when preparing for European away matches – especially given that the Europa League is a competition Erik ten Hag wants to win.

United watch a team such as last night’s hosts Omonia for four of their most recent games — ideally against strong competition to get an idea of how they might set up in Europe. They usually send scouts to watch opponents in person, but technology has developed so that the club can scope teams out without leaving the UK using wide-angle footage, which is more like being at the game and offers a focus on the entire pitch and not just the action.

Away from the football side, United also sent staff to Cyprus in the weeks ahead of the game to do reconnaissance, to arrange (free) travel for fans into Nicosia and produce a detailed eight-page away supporters’ guide for their 1,000 travelling fans. This is a new idea and included detailed information, maps, stadium photos, transport links and advice for if things go wrong.

Cyprus scored well – and those United supporters who sat in the sun by beaches before the game wouldn’t disagree.

United’s priority against Omonia was a win. Defeat in the opening group game at home to Real Sociedad left a smaller margin for error for a team who want to win the group and advance directly to the last 16, and as Diogo Dalot said after: “We had a lot of challenges today and we needed a response. The three points is what we came for and we are happy with that.”

Dalot knew he would be attacking more than defending in the game. He and his team-mates expected to have the most possession and for the Cypriots to play five at the back. United’s challenge was breaking down Omonia’s 5-3-2 and how to create against their likely low block.

United predicted former Celtic manager Neil Lennon’s plans – that’s not always a given. Often adjustments will be made mid-game.

Ten Hag and his coaches felt their biggest tactical challenge was drawing out Omonia’s back five, then penetrating when they did.

United wanted to entice the full-backs to push forward and exploit the space behind them. To do that, they needed to have enough bodies high up the pitch and for those bodies to be correctly positioned. There had to be balance provided by midfielders Casemiro and Christian Eriksen , too.

If United’s plan went to perfection, wide men Antony and Jadon Sancho would be so high that Omonia would be forced into a flat back five. If that happened, United would have four against three in the central areas. Manchester City excel at this when playing a back five – as they often do.

United did this against Omonia, and had the extra man in midfield. Omonia couldn’t cover the width, especially if United switched the play quickly. With Sancho and Antony high and wide, Dalot and Tyrell Malacia came inside – inverted full-backs – to control the possession. That meant three central midfielders in Casemiro, Dalot and Malacia with Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes operating a little higher.

So… what went wrong in the first half?

Those more advanced players moved into spaces too early and killed the space they were supposed to run into. That meant they couldn’t overlap or set up Antony to go one-on-one with a defender as much.

Ten Hag knows this type of game well since his Ajax sides were used to playing this type of domination match in the Dutch Eredivisie. United are not used to having 70 per cent of possession in the Premier League – not yet, anyway.

Omonia are a totally different proposition to a Premier League side as they didn’t look to play and didn’t try to press. That meant United had so much of the ball in front of Omonia – 81 per cent after 30 minutes – but little rhythm and understanding.

Fernandes, Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo are top players but they weren’t combining well. The biggest chance of the first half saw Antony one on one with goalkeeper Fabiano Freitas, but he passed to Fernandes and the chance was squandered.

More of United’s chances came when Lisandro Martinez stepped up. When the Argentinian had the ball, Ronaldo made runs in behind defenders, while Antony and Fernandes made diagonal ones.

Sancho did not play well. He made safe passes, didn’t dribble or look to take men on. His link-up play with Malacia down United’s left was non-existent.

And then Omonia scored after 34 minutes.

Despite all his attacking qualities, Sancho decided to play a ball backwards from a corner, when almost all his team-mates were in attacking positions. He passed to Malacia, a player still finding his feet at his new club. The 22-year-old Dutchman took a risk and tried to shield the ball, but lost it and Omonia, with numerical supremacy, countered.

Eriksen chased back hard but couldn’t get close and United were suddenly a goal behind.

“Football is a game of mistakes and in the first 30 or 35 minutes we played quite well, the only thing we didn’t do was score a goal,” said Ten Hag. “When you score a goal, you make your life easy. We didn’t, then we conceded a goal and it was the worst 10 minutes of the game from us.”

Put another way, United were stung by that goal and panicked.

“Overall, we could have controlled the game much more than we did, especially in the last minutes and also in the minutes after we conceded. But we did a really good 35 minutes in the first half — really controlled, very good chances to score as well,” added Dalot, broadly agreeing with his manager.

The risk for United was that by playing so advanced, they were always susceptible to a counterattack.

It was similar in Istanbul two years ago went for the win against Basaksehir, who, like Omonia were perceived to be the weakest in the group – but made an error and conceded a bizarre goal to Demba Ba, which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team couldn’t come back from.

Solskjaer reckoned that defeat cost his side qualification from the Champions League group.

It was different in Nicosia.

🦉 Višća & Demba Ba catch Manchester United on the break… 🟡🔵 İstanbul Başakşehir’s 1st ever Champions League goal! #UCL | @dembabafoot | @ibfk2014 pic.twitter.com/JtAVP75UEO — UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) November 9, 2020

That night in Istanbul, United had conceded twice by half-time and couldn’t come back from it. In Nicosia, they got to the break with no further damage caused and Ten Hag made clear, decisive changes.

“After half-time, we dealt well with the setback,” said Ten Hag. He made two substitutions at the break, taking off the two players most culpable for the goal, Sancho and Malacia.

“In the second half, we came with the mentality of trying to come back with no panic, no rush and trying to do what we had planned for today,” said Dalot.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial came on and immediately United became quicker, with more precise passes, and more long ones too. Rashford’s pace was far more threatening than Sancho’s had been.

It was one such pass from Fernandes from deep which saw Rashford run onto it with perfect timing and then a curling finish to equalise on 53 minutes.

go-deeper

Why did Manchester United stay in Cyprus rather than flying home?

But what else changed? Martinez stepped up even more at the back and played key balls forward while further ahead, United kept the central area open to make combinations and flicks. That part of the pitch, which was overcrowded in the first half, became where players ran into. Omonia’s defenders are good in air, less so on the floor. Rashford then set up Martial for the second 10 minutes later, then scored the third late on by tapping in a Ronaldo shot-cum-cross.

United’s last five goals in all competitions have now been scored by substitutes while Martial has three this week.

man utd european away travel

“All the subs had a really good impact,” said Ten Hag. “That’s what I expect from players on the bench. Every sub has to be ready and tonight is just the best example you can get.”

Omonia scored a second in the 85th minute, giving them a credible scoreline which meant they were applauded off the field by their own passionate fans despite the defeat.

Those supporters will make another din in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford next Thursday.

It was an odd night, an odd result, but the right result – for the game and for United.

Manchester united | european away days 98-99.

  • November 29, 2023

Duncan Quinton first went to watch a Manchester United match during 1983/84 season when he was 9 years old, and has devoted to his life the Red Devils ever since.

During the 80s, United weren’t the force that they would become in the 90s or that they had been back in the 60s, and they would loose that early December match in 1983 0-1 against a thriving Everton. Regardless of the result, It was ‘electric’ atmosphere and togetherness of his fellow United supporters, coined with Matt Busby’s legacy that had Quinton hooked.

40 years on, United fans can look back on a period in which they dominated English football, and led by Sir Alex Ferguson were able to enjoy European Cup success once again.

Champions League Final. Manchester United 2-1 Bayern Munich. Camp Nou, Barcelona. 26 May 1999.

“The mystique has gone. Multinational branding and homogeneous stadiums dilute the experience of today. I miss the rawness of the 90s.” Duncan Quinton

Speaking with Lower Block, Quinton talks about what Manchester United means to him, how football fan culture has changed and shares his memories and photographs from United’s away run to their glorious 1999 Champions League victory.

Lower Block: Where are you from, where do you live now?

Duncan Quinton: My family hale from the Rossendale Valley, about 15 miles north of Manchester and I now live in Ilkley, about 20 miles north of Leeds.

LB: How long have you supported Manchester United?

DQ: I went to my first game versus Everton in the 1983/84 season when I was 9 years old, so 40 years now.

LB: What does the club mean to you?

DQ: The club mean two things for me: Firstly, the supporters. When I started going, we didn’t win much but the atmosphere and crowds were electric and the names (of well known supporters) off the pitch were as big as those on it… And secondly, the story of one man’s vision (Sir Matt Busby) to create a youth system to venture and later conquer Europe, despite the tragedy that unfurled in its pursuit is the stuff of Hollywood

Bayern Munich 2 -2 Manchester United, Olympiastadion, Munich. 30 September 1998.

Bayern Munich 2 -2 Manchester United, Olympiastadion, Munich. 30 September 1998.

“You’d often walk into a bar or onto a train overseas and see the same faces. They’d give you ‘the nod’. Acceptance into the unwritten inner circle for being there.” Duncan Quinton

Bayern Munich 2 -2 Manchester United, Olympiastadion, Munich. 30 September 1998.

LB: What was it like following United away in Europe in the 90s? How does it differ to today and what do you miss about it?

DQ: Following United away in the 90s was an adventure and totally new experience. This was before smart phones, the internet and cheap flights and so it was a venture into new territories and experiences. Football took us to Istanbul, Lodz and Turin and we had little idea about the atmosphere, cities or players until we observed them with our own eyes. So how it compares? The mystique has gone and the multinational branding and homogeneous stadiums dilute the experience of today. I miss the rawness of the 90s.

LB: Back then, what was the travelling fan culture like? It must have been great visiting so many European cities – with likeminded friends and fans..?

DQ: The travelling experience was more of an adventure back then as there were many unknowns such as where the ground was, which train to catch or even where we’d sleep.

Three other key points also come to mind:

Firstly, in the weeks building up to the game people would ask for example “what are you doing for Barca?”. Talking was the only form of knowledge and communication.

Secondly, European away travel was less advertised and you’d often walk into a bar or onto a train overseas and see the same faces. They’d give you ‘the nod’. Acceptance into the unwritten inner circle for being there.

Third. This wasn’t long after the European ban, so police treated you with suspicion or violence and locals came to hunt the (English) lions of the jungle. You had to be wary.

Bayern Munich 2 -2 Manchester United, Olympiastadion, Munich. 30 September 1998.

Barcelona 3 -3 Manchester United, Camp Nou. 25 November 1998 .

Barcelona 3 -3 Manchester United, Camp Nou. 25 November 1998

LB: Looking back at these photographs now, what sort of emotions or memories do they stir up?

DQ: Looking back at the photos now I noticed things I’d never seen – The Bayern players down on the pitch in the final or Peter Schmeichel kicking the ball from the goal in the 3-3 vs Barca away. The key memories are of going to the big games and being there, rather than the victories.

LB: Apart from the final against Bayern – do you have a favourite moment?

DQ: My key memory is walking into the San Siro versus inter. We came in by the corner flag and it was like a giant spaceship – Blinding lights, steep stands and a bear pit atmosphere.

Barcelona 3 -3 Manchester United, Camp Nou. 25 November 1998

Champions League Final. Manchester United 2-1 Bayern Munich. Camp Nour, Barcelona. 26 May 1999

LB: What can you remember from that final in 99?

DQ: My main memory of the final was the whistle blowing and the reaction of my mate Aubrey, who’d been to most games with me. A kick boxing giant letting out a huge howl as he burst into tears and fell onto his knees.

LB: How did you celebrate?

DQ: Immediately after the match, the police cancelled our coaches to the airport so we walked mikes with thousands of others for a missed flight. A new one was charted for the morning and we got back to Manchester to find no one appeared to have worked that day as Deansgate was packed with fans. We met friends, sunk beers and I climbed a lamppost near atlas bar to watch the trophy parade close hand.

The results which would deny Man Utd a place in Europe for the first time in 10 years

Manchester united could fail to qualify for europe for the first time since the 2014/15 season..

Rory O'Callaghan

Rory O'Callaghan

Manchester United's hopes of securing European football next season were dealt another blow on Thursday night following Chelsea's win over Tottenham.

United have endured a frustrating second season under Erik ten Hag and now face the real possibility of missing out on Europe for the first time in a decade.

They are currently sixth in the Premier League and saw their slim chances of securing Champions League football for next season ended on Wednesday evening after Borussia Dortmund's win over PSG.

Dortmund's victory means Germany will join Italy in having an extra place in the Champions League next season , with UEFA awarding them based on clubs' performances in European competition in the current campaign.

Fifth place in the Premier League will not be good enough for a spot in the Champions League next season, ending United's hopes of booking a place in the revamped 2024/25 edition of the competition.

There is still the possibility that United could end the season having failed to qualify for Europe completely, depending on a series of results happening in the final weeks.

If two of Newcastle, Chelsea or West Ham overtake United in the Premier League, and Ten Hag's side fail to beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final, the Red Devils will fail to qualify for Europe for the first time since the 2014/15 campaign.

Sixth-place United are currently one point ahead of seventh-place Newcastle, with Chelsea in eighth now only three points behind the Red Devils following their win over Spurs. West Ham, meanwhile, are in the ninth - five points behind United.

At present, the top four will qualify for the Champions League, fifth will automatically enter the Europa League with sixth set to join them or drop into the Europa Conference League .

For sixth place to be a Europa League spot, it would need the FA Cup winners to have not qualified for Europe through their league position.

United face City in the final on May 25 and if Pep Guardiola's side win that match, sixth place in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League and seventh qualify for the Europa Conference League.

United would then need to finish above one of Chelsea and Newcastle to secure a place in Europe.

However, if they manage to beat City at Wembley, Ten Hag's side will automatically qualify for the Europa League regardless of their final league position.

Euro 2024 teams can add 3 players in 26-man squads to help cope with injuries

NYON, Switzerland (AP) — Teams at the European Championship can name three extra players in 26-man squads after UEFA agreed to amend the tournament rules on Friday.

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman and England’s Gareth Southgate were among those asking UEFA to let them select more players for the June 14-July 14 tournament and help deal with injuries in the squad.

Tournament squad sizes had long been 23 players but were increased to 26 by UEFA for Euro 2020, which was postponed and played the next year, and by FIFA for the 2022 World Cup to better deal with COVID-19 issues in the delegation.

The larger squads will stay for the 24 teams at post-pandemic Euro 2024 in Germany.

“The increase does not represent an obligation for the participating national associations,” UEFA said in a statement.

Adding up to 72 extra places on the collective tournament roster should lower the daily rate UEFA pays to clubs for releasing their players to national team duty at Euro 2024.

UEFA agreed with the European Club Association to set aside 140 million euros ($150 million) from total tournament revenue of more than 2 billion euros ($2.16 billion) to distribute among clubs whose players are selected for the finals tournament. A further 100 million euros ($108 million) was allocated to clubs whose players were selected for Euro 2024 qualifying games and Nations League games.

After Euro 2020, Chelsea got the largest payment of 5.1 million euros ($5.5 million) from a UEFA club benefits total fund of 200 million euros ($216 million).

Local elections live: Local election drubbing laid at the feet of Sunak by former minister as minister to defend results

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has given his verdict on the local election results in today's Observer.

He uses his article to attack Rishi Sunak and call for a general election - while also celebrating his own party's victories.

Sir Keir writes: "Tragically, Britain is now the victim of a zombie government, stuck in purgatory with a prime minister who won't call an election he fears he'll lose, but can't give this country the change it deserves.

"Dragging this out longer will only cause more damage, decline and drift."

He adds that "Labour is on the starting line, raring to go" for a general election.

But Labour is talking up the work it still has to do - with the leader saying "we will work night and day until then to earn your vote so we can turn the page on this decade of decline".

In a blistering article in the Daily Telegraph, former home secretary Suella Braverman has laid the blame for the Conservatives' poor showing in the local elections at the feet of Rishi Sunak.

But she says it would be wrong to replace him.

Ms Braverman writes: "Let me cut to the chase so no one wastes time overanalysing this: we must not change our leader.

"Changing leader now won't work: the time to do so came and went.

"The hole to dig us out is the PM's, and it's time for him to start shovelling."

She goes on to say that victories for councillors in her constituency, and the win for Ben Houchen in the Tees Valley mayoral race, were "with no thanks to the national Conservative 'brand'".

She goes on to call for action from the government on a variety of issues, including tax, migration, small boats and law and order - adding that she wants to see "strong leadership, not managerialism".

Not changing course will mean the party has "no one else to blame when this week's political earthquake is made to look like a mere tremor come the general election night".

Welcome back to the Politics Hub.

It's Sunday morning - which means Trevor Phillips will be interviewing politicians and looking forward to the week ahead.

A must-watch every week, today it carries extra weight in the aftermath of the local elections.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper is out to bat for the government after the Conservatives lost hundreds of council seats and managed to win only one mayoral election.

He will be looking to steady the ship - with potential rebels against Rishi Sunak waiting in the wings when MPs return to Westminster.

Pat McFadden , the shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, will have an easier job as Labour's representative on the airwaves this morning.

The party clinched the West Midlands mayoralty last night by 1,508 votes, ousting Conservative incumbent Andy Street - after also romping home in London and a swathe of other contests.

Trevor will be speaking to John Swinney , who is eyeing a return to the top of the Scottish National Party after Humza Yousaf's resignation.

Elsewhere, the deputy director of the European Broadcasting Union - Jean Philip de Tender - will be speaking to Trevor about Eurovision and the political row over Israel.

Joining us for the panel discussions throughout will be Boris Johnson's former Downing Street communications chief Guto Harri , the ex-FT editor Lionel Barber , and Miranda Green - a former Lib Dem adviser and FT columnist.

Watch  Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips  from 8.30am on Sky channel 501, Virgin channel 602, Freeview channel 233, on the  Sky News website  and  app  or on  YouTube .

Thanks for joining us for another extremely busy day of local election news. You can join us tomorrow morning for a special election episode of Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips.

Until then, here are today's headlines:

  • Tory incumbent Andy Street has suffered a shock loss to Labour in the West Midlands mayoral race in a major blow to the prime minister;
  • Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has heralded the win as a "significant piece of political history";
  • Sadiq Khan has won a historic third term as London mayor;
  • Andy Burnham was re-elected as Greater Manchester mayor for a third term with more than 60% of the vote;
  • Labour also won mayoral races in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Liverpool City Region and Salford ;
  • The results mean Labour has won all but one of the mayoral races they were contesting, losing Tees Valley to the Tory incumbent;
  • The Conservatives have lost 473 seats and control of 12 councils;
  • Labour has gained eight councils and 185 seats;
  • The results mean the  Liberal Democrats  have won more council seats than the Conservatives;
  • The  Green Party  has netted an extra 74 seats, making serious gains in places like Bristol.

Richard Parker has pulled off a surprise victory in the West Midlands mayoral election.

The Labour candidate unseated Andy Street, winning by just 1,508 votes, to end the Tory's seven-year term.

Here's what you need to know about the relatively unknown politician.

Originally from Bristol, Mr Parker's father was a dock worker and his mother a school secretary.

He left school aged 16 and went straight to work at a local port authority before getting an economics degree.

Mr Parker went to work for PwC in 1989, where he gained his accountancy qualifications and went on to become a partner, managing the accountancy firm's relationship with the Labour Party.

Mr Parker also worked with council leaders to set up the West Midlands Combined Authority in 2016 before leaving to set up his own company RP Strategy.

By Andy Hayes, news reporter

Tory incumbent Andy Street has suffered a shock defeat to Labour in the West Midlands mayoral election after a partial recount was ordered.

Labour's Richard Parker beat Mr Street by just 1,508 votes - 0.25% - to deliver a major blow to Rishi Sunak in the key electoral battleground after a hammering in the local elections.

With the race neck-and-neck, in the end it came down to the results in one borough - Labour-supporting Sandwell.

"This is the most important thing I will ever do," Mr Parker said in his acceptance speech.

"I promise you that I will deliver jobs," he added.

He told Sky News he would take buses "back into public control" and deliver the "largest programme of social housing we've had in this region for more than 40 years".

And he thanked his predecessor, who he said had "led this region through a number of great challenges and you deserve great credit for that".

Labour's win in the West Midlands has left Rishi Sunak with "just one man standing", Sky's  political editor Beth Rigby  says.

The Conservatives have now lost all of the mayoral races in this election, with the exception of Tees Valley.

Beth says one senior Labour figure has told her the West Midlands was the Tory scalp Labour really wanted - and were pulling resources from Tees Valley to make it happen.

"They were really fighting hard to take this Tory jewel from the crown," she says.

The "energy and the euphoria was palpable" within the Labour camp after victory was declared, Beth says .

"They were so wired, excited, euphoric about this win because for them it is huge."

She says you could feel among the Labour activists, and Sir Keir Starmer himself, that they are beginning to feel "they can really do this" in the general election.

Symbolically they can say "we took your crown jewel in the West Midlands and we are coming for those seats".

"It gives Starmer momentum and it will leave the Conservatives hugely deflated," she adds.

Labour's new mayor for the West Midlands Richard Parker tells Sky News he plans to "work really closely with a future Labour government".

"I think that's the best way for us to work together for the wider benefit of this region," he says.

Mr Parker defeated Tory incumbent Andy Street in a major blow to the Conservatives.

Labour's election success is a "vindication of the hard work that we've done to change the Labour Party," Sir Keir Starmer says.

He heralds the "phenomenal result" in the West Midlands, which saw Labour's Richard Parker defeat the Tory incumbent.

But he says Labour is now stepping up again towards the general election "so that we can serve the working people once again as a new and changed party".

He is asked about the extent to which Labour's stance on the Gaza war has cost the party votes.

"Where we have not been able to persuade people who might otherwise have voted for Labour, it is important to acknowledge that - to say I have heard, I've listened and I am determined to meet the concerns they have and win back their trust and confidence."

"But nothing takes away from the significance of this victory here in the West Midlands," he says.

Labour's Richard Parker is appearing alongside Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer after winning the West Midlands mayoral race.

"It's time for a fresh start ... we start on Monday," Mr Parker says to a loud applause.

Speaking next, Sir Keir declares: "What a way to end the local elections in 2024".

"This is a significant piece of political history that we have made here today," he says.
