From Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Ship Terminals

Barcelona’s cruise port is conveniently located near the city centre, at one end of the famous Las Ramblas Boulevard.

Although there are various public transportation options to reach the city centre from the airport , none of them provides direct access to the cruise ship terminals. As a result, most people either opt for a taxi or reserve a transfer service offered by their travel agent or the cruise line.

However, alternative methods are available, and it’s important to compare the various options before deciding. In this article, we look at how to get from Barcelona Airport to the cruise ship terminals via taxi, shuttle bus, regular bus, train, metro, and private transfer.

In a hurry?

A taxi from Barcelona Airport to the cruise port costs €45 and takes approximately thirty minutes. Alternatively, local bus company Moventis operates a shuttle service which runs directly from the airport to the cruise ship terminals.

Barcelona Cruise Ship Terminals

Cruise ships dock at seven terminals in Barcelona harbour. Larger ships dock at four terminals on the Moll Adossat wharf. Smaller ships dock at the three World Trade Center terminals on the Moll de Barcelona wharf.

The World Trade Centre terminals are within walking distance of Las Ramblas and the nearby Drassanes metro station (see map below).

The Moll Adossat terminals are approximately three kilometres from Las Ramblas, and there is a shuttle bus that departs from the World Trade Center terminals, which is near the Columbus Monument .

Before deciding which mode of transport to use, you should check which terminal your cruise ship will be docking at here . This information should have been provided by your travel agent when you booked your cruise.

By Taxi from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Ship Terminals

The fastest and most convenient way to get from the airport to your cruise ship is by taxi.

The taxi fare from Barcelona airport to the cruise ship terminals is €45, which includes up to 4 people and four pieces of luggage.

Depending on traffic and which terminal your ship is docked at, the journey should take about 30 minutes.

To the taxi rank at BCN Terminal 1

As you leave the luggage claim area and go through the sliding doors, you will come to a metal barrier where people await arrivals. Beyond this barrier, there are two covered ramps leading down to the taxi ranks, wither side of the Go Natural snack bar.

If you have booked a taxi in advance , you should take the ramp to the right of the snack bar , which leads down to the taxi stand where your cab will be waiting for you.

If you haven’t pre-booked a taxi, you should head for the ramp to the left of the snack bar . At the bottom of this ramp, there are white arrows leading to a second taxi stand where taxi-wardens in high vis jackets will guide you to the next available taxi.

By Shuttle Bus from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Ship Terminals

Local bus company Moventis operates a shared shuttle service which runs directly from Barcelona Airport to the cruise ship terminals and costs approximately the same as going by public transport.

Unlike regular bus and coach services, which run to a fixed timetable, Moventis schedules transfers according to their customers’ arrival times. To ensure minimal delays, they adapt the type of vehicle used based on demand. At peak times, they use luxury coaches, and during less busy periods, they use air-conditioned minibuses.

When you book your transfer, you indicate your flight time and which ship you will be leaving on. Upon arrival at Barcelona Airport, you are met by a Moventis staff member or agent who takes you to your vehicle.

There are meeting points at both airport terminals. If your flight lands at terminal one, the Moventis agent will be waiting for you near the barriers as you leave the baggage claim area. You can’t miss them; just look out for someone in a bright orange uniform.

In terminal two, you need to go to the From2 desk, near the escalators leading to the train station, in section 2B. As you leave the baggage claim area, turn left and follow the signs to the train station as described in this post. The From2 desk is behind the escalator on the ground floor.

From Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Ship Terminals by Public Transport

There are several ways to get from Barcelona airport to the cruise ship terminals by public transport. As mentioned above, none of them is direct, and all involve some amount of walking.

By Train from the Airport

The cheapest way to get to the cruise ship terminal from the airport is to take the R2 Nord train from the train station at BCN terminal T2 to Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia train station. Trains depart every 30 minutes and take approximately 25 minutes to get to Passeig de Gràcia. Check train timetables here .

From here, you catch the metro L3 (green line) three stops to Drassanes (direction Zona Universitària).

It takes approximately ten minutes to walk from the Drassanes metro stop to the World Trade Center terminals on Barcelona Wharf.

If your ship docks at one of the terminals on the Moll Adossat pier, then you will need to take the Cruise Bus (more information below) from near the World Trade Center terminals to your ship.

The total cost per person of this journey is €4.60 (train fare) + €2.55 (metro fare) + €3 (Cruise Bus to Moll Adossat if needed)

If there are two or more of you travelling together, you can save money by purchasing a T-familiar travel card, which costs €10.70 for eight combined journeys and covers both the train and the metro.

T-familiar tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines at the airport train station.

You can also save money by purchasing return tickets for the cruise bus.

More information about public transport tickets and travel passes here >>

If your flight lands at BCN Terminal 1, there is a free shuttle bus that will take you to Terminal 2. Buses depart every 5 minutes and take approximately 10 minutes.

By Bus from the Airport

The Aerobus is a fast bus service from Barcelona airport to the city centre. The first stop on the route is Plaça d’Espanya , where you can catch the L3 metro four stops to Drassanes (direction Trinitat Nova).

From here, it takes approximately twenty-five minutes to walk to the World Trade Center, from where you can catch the Cruise Bus to Moll Adossat Wharf.

The Aerobús fare is currently €6.75, and buses depart from Terminal 1 every five minutes throughout most of the day and every ten minutes from Terminal 2.

This not only saves having to take the shuttle bus between airport terminals but also saves you from having to wait up to 30 minutes for the next train.

The total cost per person for the journey is €6.75 (Aerobus fare) + €2.55 (metro fare) + €3 (Cruise Bus to Moll Adossat wharf).

Tickets for the Aerobus can be purchased at ticket machines near the bus stop or online in advance .

The Cruise Bus

a blue cruise ship shuttle bus parked at a bus stop next to Barcelona harbour

The Cruise Bus (also known as the T3 or Portbus) is a shuttle service that follows a circular route connecting the cruise ship terminals.

The bus stops at Barcelona Wharf (the World Trade Center terminals), Moll Adossat Terminal A, terminal B, Terminal C and Terminal D. The fare is €3 one way or €4.50 return.

Tickets can be purchased on the bus, cash only, correct change or small denomination notes or online at the Cruise Bus website .

The buses don’t follow a set timetable. Departures are coordinated with the arrival and departure of the cruise ships. At peak times, when passengers disembark and board the ships, buses depart every few minutes. During the rest of the day, there are buses approximately every 20 minutes.

All buses are wheelchair accessible and have space to stow large suitcases.

The Cruise Bus is NOT covered by TMB tickets or travel cards such as the T-casual or the Hola Barcelona Travel Card .

From the Drassanes metro stop to the Cruise Bus Stop & the World Trade Center Terminal

It takes approximately seven minutes to walk from the Drassanes metro stop to the World Trade Center terminal and the Cruise Bus stop.

When exiting the metro, follow the signs on the platform to the Sortida Portal de Sta Madrona exit. After you go through the ticket barriers, you will see a sign pointing to the right with a pictogram of a cruise ship. In my opinion, especially if you’re travelling with heavy luggage, it’s better to turn left towards the Av de les Drassanes exit, where there is a lift up to street level.

The lift brings you up in front of the Torre Colon Tower (one of the ugliest skyscrapers in Barcelona ).

With your back to the tower, you will see the Barcelona Maritime Museum to your right and La Rambla to your left.

Walk towards the Maritime Museum and cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. Turn left and walk alongside the museum towards Passeig de Josep Carner . You will now see the Christopher Columbus Monument up ahead.

Keeping the Columbus Monument to your left, cross Passeig de Josep Carner at the pedestrian crossing, then turn right along Passeig de Josep Carner in front of the old Customs Building towards the Plaça de Les Drassanes roundabout.

Once you pass the customs building, you will see the Onades monument and, further ahead, the Torre Sant Jaume I cable car tower and the World Trade Center.

Cross the pedestrian crossing and walk straight ahead past the F1 ferry terminal and along the Moll de Barcelona wharf to the World Trade Center cruise terminals.

The Cruse Bus stop is located near the entrance to the Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel .

ATMs and Changing Money at Barcelona Airport

As we’ve seen above, If you haven’t purchased tickets in advance, you’ll need correct change or small denomination bills to purchase your ticket for the T3 Cruise Bus.

Exchange rates at airport money changers are notoriously bad, so it’s best to use your bank debit card and take money out from the ATMs at the airport.

There are ATMs (cash machines) at both terminals. There’s no need to worry if you don’t speak Spanish; once you have inserted your card, you will get the option to select your preferred language.

At terminal one, there are two ATMs next to the ramp down to the taxi rank.

At terminal 2, they are located in the vestibule after you come out of the luggage claim area, approximately halfway between the left luggage lockers and Botero’s horse statue .

Cash machines usually issue a combination of €50 and €20 bills. If you are using the airport train, you can get change from the ticket machines when you purchase your ticket (the ticket machines also accept credit cards).

There are also cafes at both terminals that will be able to change a €50 bill for the price of a cup of coffee or a snack.

From Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port by Private Transfer

If you prefer to have someone waiting for you when your flight arrives, then you could book a private transfer .

A private transfer is more expensive than catching a cab from the taxi rank but with the advantage that you can pay upfront by PayPal or credit card.

Additional services such as bag drops or booster seats for children and vehicles adapted to carry electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters are also available.

There are also left luggage storage facilities near Plaça de Catalunya,   Plaça d’Espanya and at Barcelona Sants train station.

Hotels at Barcelona Cruise Port

The only hotel at the Barcelona Cruise ship port is the Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel which is a very good 5-star hotel.

Hotels located on Las Ramblas or Av. Paral.lel are a short taxi ride from the cruise port. For more information about where to stay in Barcelona, check out my Barcelona neighbourhood guide .

Our flight is to land at 9:30 am. assuming it takes an hour to gather luggage and 30 minutes to get to the port, making it around 11:00, is there something to do until our boarding time of 12:00? we are booked on the Royal Carribean cruise. Also, we have paid for transfer from airport to port via Royal Carribean, is that considered the Cruise Bus you mentioned?

If your transfer is organized by Royal Carribean, then I would assume that they will have laid on a bus directly from the airport to your cruise ship, so no, you won’t be taking the cruise bus mentioned in the article above.

I recommend that you contact your travel agent or the cruise line to find out about timings, but would assume that you will be able to board the ship upon arrival at the cruise terminal and that any “free time” will be time at the airport waiting for the Royal Carribean transfer service.

Assuming that you will be arriving at Terminal 1, there is a snack bar called Go Natural just after you leave baggage claim where you could rest and have a coffee while you are waiting for the Royal Carribean representative. I believe that most cruise ship companies ask you to meet their reps at a meeting point which is close to the Go Natural snack bar but recommend that you ask your travel agent or Royal Carribean to confirm this.

we are joining the royal caribbean ship on 24/09/2023 returning 01/10/23 can you advise us whether it is best to take train or cruiseshuttle bus( we are not booked on for transfers) or private hire. tia

Looking at the cruise ship timetables for September, it looks like you’ll be on the Symphony of the Seas which docks at the Moll Adossat wharf, right?

In which case, if you want to use public transport, you’ve basically got two options:

From the airport terminal 1: Take the Aerobús to Plaça de Catalunya where you transfer to the metro L3 which you take to Drassanes from where you walk to the World Trade Center and catch the Cruise Bus to your ship.

From the airport terminal 2: Take the train to Passeig de Gràcia where you transfer to the metro L3 which you take to Drassanes from where you walk to the World Trade Center and catch the Cruise Bus to your ship.

Note, it’s not either the train or the cruise bus as you mentioned, it’s train + metro + cruise bus!

I’ve recently discovered that the company who run the Cruise Bus now operate a shared transfer service which runs directly from the airport to the cruise ship terminals and costs about the same as taking public transport.

I plan to update the article in the next few days with the full details, in the meantime there’s more information in this link .

We are flying in to Barcelona and going on a cruise “Royal Caribbean” this summer and need a good hotel for a great price for one night. Also one that is somewhat close to the port terminals. What is the best way to get from airport to hotel and then the next morning to the cruise?

Hi LDenton,

I recommend you check out Hotel Jazz which is a good-value 3 star hotel close to Plaça de Catalunya.

The location is ideal, because it’s central and well communicated with both the airport and the Cruise terminals. I’ve listed some alternatives in the same area in this post .

The best way, to get from the airport to the Hotel would be by taxi. A taxi from the airport to the hotel will cost about €30 and from the hotel to the cruise terminal will cost between €10 and €15 depending on which cruise terminal your ship departs from.

If you want to save some money, you could catch the Aerobús from the airport to Plaça de Cataluny which is the last stop, and only a few minutes walk from your hotel and doesn’t take much longer than a taxi. There’s more information about the Aerobús in this post .

Hi, Thank you so much for this! I am travelling with my sister in law and mother, and we are only carrying backpacks. Our destination is Airport to Palacruceros, Terminal D & Terminal E Muelle Adosado, Port of Barcelona. We have a lot of time as we will arrive hours early so we’re looking for the cheapest option to arrive at the port, maybe even stop after the train ride and visit the area before taking the bus, as I believe that was the cheapest option. My question is, after the train and the bus (buying that 8 journey ticket for all 3 of us I believe you said would be cheaper), can we walk to the terminal? Is it a long walk? Google maps is showing me a lot of back and forth and saying it’s a 54 minute walk. Thank you!

I think you mean train and metro right?

From the Drassanes metro stop to Terminal E is about four kilometres, so fifty minutes would be about right. It’s not an unpleasant walk, and there is pavement all the way, but unless you’re particularly interested in large commercial harbours, it’s not particularly interesting either. I walked it a couple of years ago while researching this article, and I think it took me about forty-five minutes, but I wasn’t carrying any luggage.

If you’ve got plenty of time on your hands, you could send your luggage ahead with a bag drop service from the airport (link in the article above), then catch the train to Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia station, which is right next to Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, and not far from La Sagrada Familia.

Depending on how much time you actually have, you could visit one or more of them before catching a taxi to the cruise terminal, which would cost about fifteen Euros.

Does being on a cruise ship for 8 days in the Mediterranean count as 8 days in the schengen

Hi Mrs P Baker,

My understanding is that, if all the ports that the ship docks at during the cruise are within the Schengen Area, then you will be deemed to be in the Schengen Area for all eight days.

Having said that, I’m not an expert on immigration and visa-related topics so I recommend you check with your travel agent to make sure

How can be go from city center to the cruise terminal in economical way?

It will vary depending on where you are staying in the city centre, and which terminal your cruise ship departs from.

For example, from Plaça de Catalunya (generally considered to be the centre of Barcelona) to Moll Adossat you can take the metro (line 3) to Drassanes followed by the cruise bus from near the Columbus Monument to the terminal (more information about these locations in the article above).

This will cost €2.40 for the metro plus €3.00 for the Cruise Bus. Generally speaking, wherever you are staying within Barcelona, the cost of travelling to the cruise ship terminal will be the same. If you already have a travel pass such as the Barcelona Card or the Hola Barcelona, then you could use this for travelling on the metro but not on the Cruise Bus.

A taxi for the same journey will cost approximately €15.00.

If you tell me where you are staying and which terminal your cruise ship will be moored at I’ll be able to give you more detailed and accurate advice.

Once again, you were right on track. Without naming names your blog spelled out to a “T” what a high-priced Cruise could not answer as effectively or clearly as you did above just because we “deviated” from Cruise plan. You saved us a lot of “Aggro,” not to mention money. We paid $100 for the pleasure of this deviation, but we enjoyed a week in Barcelona and thanks to you Blog, we put ALL our money back into the Local Economy in Barcelona ( or govt agencies) and just in the above Blog Post you probably saved us another €50 on the Taxi. This cruise line charges minimum €100 extra Euros for this “Convenience”. Not even sure in today’s market how “convenient” waiting around for other flights, cruisers, hotel guests, etc. Their “Plan” is. Thank you again as we depart Barcelona in Style, but we are coming back with out Posse sooner not later.

Thanks for your feedback. I’m glad to have been able to help and wish you a safe journey home.

If we get the metro from the airport and purchase the single trip tickets, are we allowed to change tubes at stations on the same tickets as long as we don’t leave the metro, and our trip time is less than 1hr15mins, or will we have to purchase new tickets at each station change?

Hi Mr Gorman,

Yes, as long as you don’t leave the metro system, you can use a single metro ticket. There’s a special ticket for the airport metro which currently costs €5.15.

Take the L9sud from the airport to Zona Universitaria (last stop) followed by the L3 (direction Trinitat Nova) from there to Drassanes. The journey should take about an hour.

Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port by Bus

When it comes to public transfers from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port, the combination of the fast and comfy Aerobus bus lines with Barcelona’s effective subway is your first alternative. Thus, you can take the Aerobus A1 from T1 (you’ll find a bus stop both at Arrivals and Departures levels) or the Aerobus A2 if landing at terminal 2. The Aerobus bus stands are located outside the T2B and T2C sections of the terminal. Both lines run on a 4-10-minute frequency, around the clock, and cost 5.90€/5.90$. Tickets can be bought online, through the automatic vending machines and the T1 information desk, or inside the bus using cash. Hopping on the bus, you’ll find your disembarkation stop at Plaça d’Espanya. You can expect to be there in about 25 minutes.

When reaching Plaça d’Espanya, you’ll have to continue your journey with the Green Metro Line L3. Barcelona subway operates from 05:00 am to midnight on weekdays and Sundays, but on Fridays and during public holidays, it runs until 02:00 am, while on Saturdays, routes are available all night long. The Green Metro Line L3 departs approximately every 4 minutes from Plaça d’Espanya Station and reaches Drassanes, the station near the World Trade Center terminals, in 14 minutes. The metro ticket price is 2.40€/2.40$.

However, if your cruise terminal is the Moll Adossat, you’ll have to continue your transfer with the Cruise Bus (Portbus) to reach your final destination. The Portbus stop lies near the Columbus Monument. Nevertheless, the cruise shuttle bus doesn’t have a set schedule but runs according to the cruise ships’ arrivals and departures. This last transfer won’t last more than 10 minutes and will cost you as much as 3€/3$ (4.50€/4.50$ for a round trip). You can buy your tickets from the driver inside the bus (only in cash).

Overall, your transfer with the BCN Aerobus lines, the Green Metro Line, and the Portbus will last 50 minutes (waiting time not included) and cost 11.30€/11.30$.

Our Tip: Instead of using single tickets, you can opt for integrated tickets. However, if you aren’t to stay in Barcelona, those tickets won’t be of great value, as they can’t be used on Aerobus lines or at the Portbus.

Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port by Train

The  RENFE R2 Nord Line  is the line handling the BCN airport connection to the city center. Thus, if you prefer a train transfer to Barcelona, you can take one of the RENFE trains, leaving every 30 minutes from the Airport Train Station, located outside T2. The trains’ operating hours are from 05:42 am to 11:38 pm, and their cost is 4.60€/4.60$.

The R2 Nord Train will take you to Passeig de Gràcia Station in Barcelona in about 27 minutes. After reaching Passeig de Gràcia, you’ll hop on the Green Line L3 to Drassanes Station. Drassanes Station lies only 5 minutes away by subway. Its ticket is 2.40€/2.40$. Metro L3 passes every 4 minutes, from 05:00 am to midnight (until 02:00 on Fridays and holidays and around the clock on Saturdays).

From Drassanes Station, you’ll have to take once again the cruise shuttle bus, Portbus, from the nearby bus stop (near Columbus Monument). If you want to reach the World Trade Center terminals, you can do it on foot. However, for the Moll Adossat, the Cruise Bus is the ideal alternative. The bus schedule is flexible, following the cruise port traffic, and its ticket costs 3€/3$ for a one-way trip and 4.50€/4.50$ for a return one.

Thus, the total duration of your transfer from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port will be 42 minutes, and you can expect to be charged 10€/10$.

Our Tip 1: Are you landing at T1? No worries! You can take the free airport shuttle bus, running on a 10-minute frequency, and reach the train station in about 10 minutes.

Our Tip 2: Barcelona’s integrated tickets can’t be used for the Portbus, but they are accepted in the RENFE trains and the metro lines as well. You can choose between the T-casual cards (available for 10 journeys at a 7.95€/7.95$ cost) or a T-familiar card (a multi-person card allowing 8 journeys at a 10€/10$ price), or check out all the options .

Car Rental from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port

Barcelona Airport hosts numerous car rental companies, providing premium services and value-for-money options. In general terms, Barcelona car rentals are considered ideal for travelers valuing independent rides.

Hence, if you have settled with an airport car rental, you won’t face difficulties in your approximately 25-minute transfer from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port. Taking the C-31 from Av. de l’Aeroport, you’ll continue to B-10 to Passeig Josep Carner. Taking the Exit 21 towards Ciutat Vella/Paral.lel/La Rombla/Montjuïc/Port Vell, you’ll follow the Moll de Sant Bertran road until reaching Moll de Ponent. In the next roundabout, you’ll take the Exit to Rda del Port, head to Carrer Marítim de Gabriel Roca, and continue your way to the Moll Adossat terminal.

Private Airport Transfers from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port

Private transfers  are the most relaxed way to get from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port. They provide you with great comfort and convenience. The driver will meet you at arrivals with your name on a card and take care of all the paperwork for you so that all you have to do is enjoy the ride. You can even pre-book these transfers in advance so that everything is organized for you before arriving at Barcelona Airport.

How much is a taxi from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port?

A taxi ride from BCN Airport to the Cruise Port (the Moll Adossat terminal) costs 39€/39$. The price is fixed and includes all surcharges. Furthermore, you can expect to reach your destination in about 25 minutes, depending on the road traffic.

How far is the airport from the Cruise Port in Barcelona?

Traveling by taxi or car from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port takes about 25 minutes, as the airport is only 17 minutes away from the Moll Adossat terminal (the major cruise dock of Barcelona Cruise Port, hosting the biggest cruise ships). Unfortunately, BCN Airport isn’t directly connected to the Cruise Port via public transportation.

Barcelona Cruise Port Parking

Long-term parking is available at the World Trade Center Barcelona and at Terminal E. Both locations have 24-hour security.

Terminal E is outdoors while The World Trade Center lot is indoors and offers optional car-washing services. Be aware that parking here will still require taking the Cruise Bus to Terminals A, B, C, D and E.

You can reserve ahead of time for parking at the World Trade Center Barcelona and at Terminal E .

Getting from Barcelona-El Prat International Airport (BCN) to the Barcelona Cruise Port

barcelona cruise ship to airport

Rideshare services such as Uber and Cabify are available at the Barcelona International Airport . Pickup locations vary by terminal; directions will be sent via the apps when you book your ride.

Shuttle services are also available through a variety of companies.

Public Transit from Barcelona-El Prat International Airport to the Barcelona Cruise Port

You can reach the Barcelona cruise terminal by metro and bus if you’re coming from the airport. To get there, take Line 9 and transfer to Line 3 at Zona Universitaria station. The closest metro stop to the port is Drassanes, which sits at the foot of La Rambla.

Once you arrive at the Drassanes station, you'll still have to catch the T3/PortBus cruise shuttle bus , which is about a five-minute walk away. This dedicated cruise passenger shuttle, nicknamed the Blue Bus, runs between Terminals A through E and the Columbus Monument in about 10 minutes. They come about every 15 minutes, but the schedule varies by demand.

There are two express buses from the airport to the city center; both stop at Plaça de Catalunya. From there, you’ll have to take a taxi to the Barcelona cruise port, or Metro L3 to Drassanes and then a taxi or the cruise shuttle bus.

The 46 bus also connects the airport to the city center (stops at Plaça de Espanya), but the ride can be long.

Barcelona-El Prat International Airport Taxi Service to the Barcelona Cruise Port

By taxi, the ride from the airport to any of the cruise terminals takes about a half-hour. Taxis are available outside the Arrivals level of the airport.

Getting from the Girona-Costa Brava Airport to the Barcelona Cruise Port

Some budget airlines also fly to Girona–Costa Brava Airport , which is about 90 minutes north from the Barcelona cruise port.

Public Transit from the Girona-Costa Brava Airport to the Barcelona Cruise Port

Sagales bus company runs a shuttle between this airport and Barcelona, but bus schedules only coincide with Ryanair flights.

Aside from that, there is no direct public transit option from this airport to the Barcelona cruise port; every other route only includes several transfers.

Girona-Costa Brava Airport Taxi Service to the Barcelona Cruise Port

A cab ride to the cruise port in Barcelona from this airport can be very expensive and takes about an hour. In general, flying into the Barcelona-El Prat International Airport is often more convenient.

Restaurants Near the Barcelona Cruise Port (Plus Shopping and Other Services)

barcelona cruise ship to airport

Because the cruise port is so large, it is separate from the city center, meaning that the immediate area is mostly industrial. Therefore, there aren't many options in terms of restaurants or shopping within walking distance.

Instead, you can hop on a shuttle for a 10-minute ride to the bottom of La Rambla and wander around the vendors that line the waterfront. You'll find some selling standard souvenirs along with handmade leather goods, interesting crafts, antiques and other notable items.

For a bite close by, find Ample Street (Carrer Ample), where a two-block stretch has a number of fantastic restaurants mixed in with small stores.

You could also visit the Mercado de La Boqueria , which has its entrance conveniently located on La Rambla. This large public market is one of the city's landmarks and is bursting with fresh fruits, vegetables, cured meats, cooking ingredients and much more.

Train Service to the Barcelona Cruise Port

Most trains -- including the high-speed AVE and Renfe lines -- will arrive at the Barcelona Sants station in the north of the city. It's about a 20-minute taxi ride from there to the cruise terminal.

Regional trains can arrive at any of three other train stations in the center of town: Placa de Catalunya, Estacio Franca or Passeig de Gracia. A taxi would be the best option to get to your ship from any of these train stations.

Wheelchair and Accessibility at the Barcelona Cruise Port

Wheelchairs are available, but to guarantee the proper transportation, it's best to arrange mobility assistance through your cruise line .

Porters and Red Caps at the Barcelona Cruise Port

Porters are available at every terminal on embarkation days.

Barcelona Cruise Port Waiting Area and Seating

You'll find ample seating in any of the terminals, as well as a restaurant or bar where you can relax with a coffee (try the local-favorite café con leche). Some even have VIP lounges and children's zones.

More Tips About the Barcelona Cruise Port

barcelona cruise ship to airport

Cruise Ship Shuttle Bus Services: Many cruise companies whose ships call on Barcelona mid-voyage will also offer free shuttles that will pick you up and drop you off at the same place, so check to see whether transportation is included.

If your ship docks at the World Trade Center, you won't need the shuttle since points of interest are within walking distance.

The Area Near the Barcelona Cruise Port: Unless you dock at the World Trade Center, don't bother walking from your ship to the city. The path from the closest berth will take at least 45 minutes over a steep, highway-like bridge that does have a sidewalk but also has cars speeding by.

Luggage Storage: There is no luggage storage available at the Barcelona cruise port. However, the port does have a partnership with Bags&Go , a private company that transfers luggage to a hotel, the airport or train station.

How To Get From Barcelona Airport To The Cruise Port

This post was kindly contributed by Sira Mas, a travel blogger who lives in Barcelona.

There are so many people travelling to and from Barcelona every day. And among them, there are groups of people travelling between the Barcelona airports and the cruise port.

Barcelona Airport

However, it’s not always clear how to get from one point to another. When I had to go to the cruise port from El Prat, the main Barcelona airport, I struggled a bit to compare the different options and find the best one.

Since I took notes, here’s all the information I have about the available options you have to get from El Prat airport to the Barcelona cruise port (Moll Adossat).

Barcelona Cruise Port is 11 Miles from the Airport

The distance between the Barcelona airport and the cruise port is 11.7 miles (17.3 km). That’s approximately a 15 to 20-minute ride without traffic.

Of course, that “without traffic” bit is key, because Barcelona can get pretty busy! So make sure you factor in more time for your journey.

Barcelona traffic

It Takes 20-40 Minutes to Get from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port

If you hail a taxi or book an Uber, it takes approximately 20 minutes, sometimes less, to get from the Barcelona airport to the cruise port. If you decide to take the Aerobús shuttle and then a taxi, it will take between 30 and 40 minutes.

You can also take the R2 train from T2, get off at Sants, and then take a taxi; in that case, it would take approximately 35 minutes.

If you’re on a budget and prefer to go by bus, it can take between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours. Keep in mind that there’s no direct bus from Barcelona airport to the cruise port.

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport

Which Airport Is Closest to Barcelona Cruise Port?

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport is the closest airport to the Barcelona cruise port. El Prat airport is 11.7 miles (17.3 km) away from the cruise ship terminal, the Moll Adossat .

Other airports in Catalunya, that are not too far from Barcelona, are:

  • Reus , which is 67.2 miles (108 km) away from the cruise port – a 1h 16min trip by car or taxi,
  • Girona , which is 60 miles (96.8 km) away from the port – also a 1h 16min trip by car or taxi.

The Different Ways To Get From Barcelona Airport to Cruise Port

1. aerobús + taxi (smartest choice).

Aerobús shuttle stop

Anytime I arrive in Barcelona, I go directly to the Aerobús shuttle stop. It’s cheap, and it takes you to Barcelona in less than 30 minutes. To find the shuttle stop, you just have to follow the signs inside the terminal.

Signage pointing to shuttle stop

So, if you want to go to the cruise port from the Barcelona airport in just 35 minutes without spending too much, a great option is to take the Aerobús shuttle, get off at Plaça de Espanya – which is the first stop – and take a taxi.

During the day, the Aerobús shuttles leave the airport every 5 minutes from both terminals. In the evening – from 10 pm until midnight – there’s a bus every 10 minutes, and from midnight until 5 am there’s a bus every 20 minutes.

For more information about the schedule, you can check the Aerobús official website .

The cost of the shuttle is €6.75 per person, per trip. The cost of the taxi from Plaça Espanya to the cruise port is approximately €15.

Tip : If you’re in a hurry, you can book and schedule a taxi with FreeNow while you’re on the Aerobús – to avoid spending too much time waiting in Plaça de Espanya.

On the app, you can set as the pickup point the Torres Venecianas (Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina, Barcelona) and as the destination Moll Adossat – Terminales de Cruceros .

From the Aerobús stop in Plaça Espanya, you’ll only have to walk 50 metres to the Venetian Towers.

2. Taxi (Quickest, Most Comfortable Choice)

Taxi from Barcelona Airport to cruise port

Getting from the Barcelona airport to the cruise port by taxi is the easiest and quickest way. All you have to do is follow the taxi signs inside the terminal, reach the taxi point and get in your cab.

Then, after 15-20 minutes you’ll be at the cruise port. It took me 15 minutes by taxi to get to the port from El Prat, but there was no traffic. If there’s traffic, it will take you around 20-25 minutes.

The fixed price of a taxi from the airport to the cruise terminals is €39, which is great if you’re travelling with other people and you can split the expense.

The only downside is that there’s almost always a line at the taxi ranks, especially outside T1 and on weekends, so you’ll have to wait between 5 and 20 minutes before getting on your taxi.

Tip : If you want to skip this line, you can always book a taxi using the app FreeNow or call the Radio Taxi service – their number is +34933033033.

barcelona cruise ship to airport

Another quick option is Uber. The fee is €39 for up to 4 people – like a taxi – and €51 if you book a van for 5 to 6 people.

If you choose this option, make sure to give the driver a clear pick-up point. There’s a parking spot for Uber pick-ups in both terminals.

It’s not a bad choice. However, the only disadvantage is that Uber drivers in Barcelona are often busy, and you may end up waiting a while.

I used Uber twice in Barcelona and each time I had to wait at least 10 minutes before I got my reservation accepted.

4. Train + Taxi

Train from Barcelona Airport to cruise port

If you’re looking for an option that is fast and not too expensive, taking the train to Sants and then a taxi is your best bet.

If your flight arrives at T2, you can take the train that takes you to Sants, the main train station in Barcelona, in 23 minutes. If you arrive at T1, you can take a free shuttle that will take you to T2 in less than 10 minutes.

Taxi from Barcelona Airport to cruise port

Once you’re at the Airport train station, you can buy the ticket at the vending machines for just €2.40. You can easily check the train schedule on Google Maps .

From Sants, a taxi to the cruise port will cost you around €14 – €15.

The only disadvantages of this option are the following:

  • There’s a train every 30 minutes, so you might have to wait a bit at the station
  • Most airlines arrive at terminal 1, so you’ll have to take the free shuttle to reach T2 and walk to the airport train station – which makes the overall transfer to the cruise port longer
  • You may find a line at the Sants taxi rank

But apart from that, this is a good option, especially if you’re on a budget. And if you’re not travelling alone, you can split the taxi expense.

5. Aerobús + Cruise Bus

Barcelona cruise bus

Another option is to combine the Aerobús with a regular bus. This is great if you’re on a budget, just keep in mind that it will take a bit longer to get to the cruise port – around 1h 30.

You can take the Aerobús and get off at Plaça Espanya and then take the D20 and get off at Parallel – Drassanes. Once you’re there, you can either walk to the cruise terminal – it takes around 30 minutes – or take the cruise bus for €3. Here’s the cruise bus stop .

Important : the cruise bus doesn’t have a schedule. It departs from the World Trade Center depending on the cruise ships’ arrivals and departures.

Cruise bus

Where can I buy the bus tickets at the airport?

You can pay for a local bus ticket directly on the bus with a debit or credit card. There’s a red contactless device on your right as soon as you step on the bus. Note that the device won’t give you a receipt.

Barcelona bus going to cruise port

Or you can buy the ticket directly on the TMB app – but you’ll have to sign up first.

6. Local Buses + Cruise Bus (Cheapest Option)

Barcelona local bus going to cruise port

A cheap option to get to the port is taking two buses and then taking the cruise bus or walking. It takes longer – it can take up to 2 hours – but it’s the cheapest way to get there.

You can take the bus 46 from both terminals. The bus stop is next to the Aerobús in both terminals; also, to find the bus stop, you can easily follow the directions both inside and outside the terminal.

You will have to get off at Plaça de Espanya and take the bus D20. Then, from the bus D20, you’ll have to get off at the stop Parallel – Drassanes.

Important : Keep in mind that you’ll have to pay €2.40 on each bus.

Once you get to the port area (on the street that takes you to the World Trade Center) you can either walk to the cruise terminals – which, as we mentioned, can take 30-35 minutes – or take the cruise bus for just €3. Here’s the cruise bus stop .

How Much Is a Taxi From Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port?

A taxi from the Barcelona Airport to the cruise port costs €39, and it’s a fixed price. You’ll pay the same whether you hail a taxi outside the terminal or you book it on FreeNow.

My Recommendation

My personal recommendation is to get to the cruise port by taxi if you’re with your partner, your family or a group of friends. It’s easy and quick – and the cost per person is not excessive.

If you’re travelling alone, the Aerobús + taxi combination is your best bet. You’ll still get to the cruise port pretty quickly, without spending a fortune!

As I mentioned before, the cheapest way to get to the cruise port, in case you’re on a budget, is by bus, but you’ll have to take two buses and then walk or wait for and take the cruise bus. If you don’t want to spend too much, remember that you can always take the train and then the taxi, the final cost is around €16, which is not too bad.

In case you have a few hours between your arrival at the airport and the cruise embarkation time, here are some unique, non-touristy things to do in Barcelona .

The article says it is €25-€30 to take a taxi from the Barcelona airport to the pier. Is that cost per person, or is that the total amount for the taxi?

Hi Mary, It’s the total amount from the airport (extra to pay: XL luggages, during holidays and night schedule).

Delphine, hi! one poster says it´s more like 40 Euros. what does the price difference depend on? time of day or?

Hi Vic, ow there is a fixed price between the airport and the port for cruises. This price is 39 €, it’s a final price, all included. I actualized the post.

Have a good travel!

Closer to 40 and total price for taxi whether 2 or more people. We always take a taxi as multiple forms of transport & walking & longer journey time not worth it. We do checkin, leave our luggage & take the bus back for a ramble on las ramblas

Our flight lands at 20:55. How long does it usually take to come through Customs? We’re booked on a cruise the next day and want to know are there things to do around the airport or the cruise port before we can embark on our cruise ship? And what’s the best way to travel to the cruise port?

Hi Zuraida,

About 30mn by taxi (39€). I recomend you the pier area to waiting your checkin in the cruiser. You can walk till the Maremagnum, from which you can enjoy pretty views of the harbor, you can go shopping and enjoy many restaurants. Have a fun travel!

so if a family arrives in the evening, prior to their cruise in the next morning, do you recommend to still take a taxi to the Pier and wait there??

Hello Oksana, Getting a taxi is the most direct way of getting to the Pier. If you are staying at a hotel, you can always check if they provide transport to the Pier.

what is the closest Airport to the cruise port? and what which port does Norwegian Epic stop at?

A very useful article to read. Thanks a lot for posting this. Fine work.Keep it up.

are there money conversions at the Airport to pay in Euros?

Hello Oksana, You can check money conversion possibilities at https://www.globalexchange.es/en/branches-in-spain/barcelona .

We are a group of 4 couples (8 adults) landing at airport and need to head straight to port. We want to travel together – Is there a good reliable transfer company that anyone can recommend?

Our cruise ship arrives at 9:00 AM, our plane departs 1:30 PM, is that plenty of time ? Waiting for our luggage . Checking in, security check etc. Thank You !

Hello C Cabanes, Please contact the cruise port for an answer to your question. I don’t have any information about how fast luggage can be picked up from a cruise ship 🙂 Regards, Daniella

Overall, Barcelona’s public transportation system provides a reliable and efficient way to reach the cruise port from the airport. Whether you choose the Aerobus or the combination of RENFE train and metro, you can expect a straightforward journey with plenty of opportunities to explore the city’s vibrant atmosphere along the way.

If you prefer a direct and convenient mode of transportation, taking a taxi is a popular choice for traveling between Barcelona Cruise Port and the airport. Taxis in Barcelona are readily available and easily identifiable with their distinctive yellow and black colors.

Taxis at Barcelona Airport are located outside the terminal buildings, and you can easily find designated taxi ranks where you can queue for a taxi. It is recommended to use licensed taxis with working meters to ensure a fair and transparent fare.

The journey between the cruise port and the airport by taxi takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the traffic conditions. The advantage of taking a taxi is the door-to-door service, eliminating the need to navigate public transportation or carry heavy luggage.

Taxi fares in Barcelona are metered, and they may vary depending on the time of day, distance traveled, and any additional charges for luggage or tolls. It is advisable to ask the driver for an estimated fare before embarking on your journey to have an idea of the expected cost.

One thing to keep in mind is that peak travel times or special events may result in higher demand for taxis and potentially longer waiting times. If you are traveling during such times, it is wise to allocate extra time for your journey to account for any possible delays.

There are also alternatives to traditional taxis, such as ride-hailing services like Uber or Cabify, which are also available in Barcelona. These services offer a similar door-to-door experience but may have different pricing structures and availability depending on the time of day.

Taking a taxi between Barcelona Cruise Port and the airport offers convenience, reliability, and a comfortable travel experience. It’s a good option for those who want a hassle-free and direct journey, especially if you have a lot of luggage or prefer a more private mode of transportation.

Private Transfer

If you’re looking for a more personalized and convenient option to travel between Barcelona Cruise Port and the airport, a private transfer is an excellent choice. Private transfers offer a door-to-door service, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey.

There are several reputable companies that provide private transfer services in Barcelona. You can pre-book a private car or van to pick you up from the airport and take you directly to the cruise port or vice versa. This option allows you to skip the hassle of finding and waiting for public transportation or taxis.

Private transfers offer flexibility in terms of pick-up and drop-off locations, allowing you to choose the most convenient point for your departure or arrival. The drivers are typically professional and experienced, ensuring a safe and reliable trip.

With a private transfer, you have the advantage of traveling in a comfortable and spacious vehicle, especially if you have a lot of luggage or are traveling with a group. There is no need to worry about navigating public transportation or keeping track of schedules.

The cost of a private transfer may be higher compared to other transportation options, but it provides a hassle-free and efficient experience. The price can vary depending on factors such as the distance between the cruise port and the airport, the type of vehicle, and any additional services requested.

Booking a private transfer in advance is highly recommended to ensure availability and secure your preferred vehicle. Many companies offer online booking platforms or customer service lines to assist with reservations.

Private transfers are not limited to cars or vans; you can also opt for luxury vehicles or even minibus services for larger groups. Additionally, some companies offer additional services such as guided tours or multilingual drivers, adding an extra layer of convenience and comfort to your journey.

If you value convenience, comfort, and privacy, a private transfer is an excellent option for traveling between Barcelona Cruise Port and the airport. It offers a seamless and stress-free experience, allowing you to enjoy your journey without any worries.

When it comes to traveling between Barcelona Cruise Port and the airport, there are several transportation options to choose from. Whether you prefer public transportation, taxis, or private transfers, each option has its own advantages to suit your needs and preferences.

Public transportation, such as the Aerobus or the RENFE train, offers an affordable and convenient way to reach your destination. These options allow you to experience the local culture and save money, although they may require a bit more time and effort.

Taxis provide a direct and hassle-free journey, taking you from the airport to the cruise port in a comfortable and efficient manner. They are especially convenient if you have heavy luggage or want a more private experience.

Private transfers, on the other hand, offer a personalized and seamless service, catering to your specific needs and providing a comfortable and stress-free journey. While they may be a bit more expensive, they offer convenience and peace of mind.

It’s important to consider factors such as budget, travel time, and convenience when choosing your transportation option. If you have limited time or prefer a more comfortable experience, a taxi or private transfer might be the best choice. However, if you’re looking to immerse yourself in the local transportation system and save some money, public transportation is a great option.

Whichever mode of transportation you choose, it’s recommended to plan ahead and make necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth journey. Pre-booking taxis or private transfers, familiarizing yourself with public transportation routes and schedules, and allowing extra time for potential delays can help make your trip between Barcelona Cruise Port and the airport a seamless and enjoyable experience.

Barcelona, with its vibrant culture and stunning architecture, is a city worth exploring. Whether you’re starting or ending your cruise adventure, the journey between the cruise port and the airport is an important part of your trip. By choosing the right transportation option, you can make the most of your time in Barcelona and enjoy a memorable travel experience.

How to Get from Airport to Barcelona Cruise Port

Barcelona El-Prat is the nearest airport to cruise port Barcelona, just 16 kilometres away, and there are several ways to travel from the airport to the port.

There are direct transfer options including shuttle bus, taxi, and private transfer services, or opt to travel by public transport to Barcelona city centre via the airport train or Express Aerobus.

Where is the Cruise Port in Barcelona

Barcelona cruise ship port is one of the largest in the world, catering to more than 3 million passengers a year. It begins at the bottom of the famous Las Ramblas boulevard, opposite the Columbus Monument on Ronda Litoral.

The port caters to major cruise liners from the Carnival brand including Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess, and Holland America Line.

Several luxury hotels, shops and Barceloneta Beach are located close by, and the port is within a short walk of the picturesque Gothic Quarter. The nearest Metro station and bus stop is Drassanes.

Transportation from Airport to Barcelona Cruise Port

barcelona cruise ship to airport

In addition to taxi and private transfer shuttles to the port, regular trains and an Express Aerobus also operate from Barcelona Airport, although neither are direct services to the cruise port.

The R2 Nord RENFE train runs from Barcelona Airport to Passeig de Gràcia in the city centre, with a ticket price of less than €4,60 per person for a single journey. On arrival, transfer to L3 Green Line on the metro - destination Les Drassanes station. This route brings you to the cruise shuttle bus pick up and drop off point at the Columbus Monument.

Barcelona Airport to Cruise Port Transfers

A taxi service from T1 or T2 at Barcelona Airport costs €40-50 for a single journey. Private shuttle transfers can also be offered - the price will be dependent on the size of vehicle required, but they start at around €25 each way.

Bus from Barcelona Airport to Cruise Port

barcelona cruise ship to airport

If you prefer to travel by express bus (€5,90 single, €10,20 return ticket), this service terminates at Plaça de Catalunya.

It’s possible to walk along Las Ramblas to the cruise port shuttle, however, as it takes around 20 minutes, this may not be ideal with luggage. Instead, the L3 Green Line metro can transport you from Plaça de Catalunya to Drassanes station. The same routes apply in reverse if travelling from Barcelona cruise port to airport.

Should you decide to hop on the 24-hour Aerobus express bus, the journey time is around 30 minutes, the same duration as the airport train, however, you will need to allow additional time for your onward journey to the cruise port.

Whichever mode of transport you take, the same routes can be taken on your return journey to Barcelona airport from cruise port.

Barcelona Cruise Port Shuttle Bus

As there are seven terminals at Barcelona cruise port (some three kilometres away from the port entrance), a dedicated shuttle bus can transfer passengers from Mirador de Columbus (Columbus Monument), at the bottom of Las Ramblas, to terminals A-D. Many of the larger Carnival cruise liners dock here at Moll Adossat wharf. The cost for a single ticket on the shuttle bus is €3.00 one way and €4.50 return.

If you are arriving or departing from one of the three World Trade Centre cruise terminals (for smaller vessels), it’s a 15 minute walk from Las Ramblas and Drassanes Metro station.

Barcelona cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-05-12 05:33

Port Barcelona cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Barcelona, Spain. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Barcelona cruise port is currently ranked the largest Mediterranean cruise port with turnaround operations (roundtrip itineraries) and the world's 4th busiest. Its harbor area is one of the world's biggest. By population (over 1,6 million) the city is ranked Spain's largest and Europe's 16th largest.

By the metro population (around 5,5 million) it is ranked EU's 6th largest (after Paris , London , Madrid , Ruhr, Milano ). The city is on the Mediterranean Sea, located between the mouths of two rivers (Llobregat and Besos).

IMPORTANT : Since October 22, 2023, cruise vessels are no longer allowed to dock at Muelle Barcelona Norte (northern port, near the World Trade Centre area) and instead are redirected to berth at Moll Adossat Pier (southern port) which was previously utilized by larger cruise companies like NCL-Norwegian , RCI-Royal Caribbean and MSC . As a result, disembarking cruise tourists instead of stepping directly into the city's historic downtown (10-minute walking distance) are transported via shuttle buses (~30 minutes drive distance) from the southern port to access the city center.

Barcelona cruise port

Barcelona Port (locode ESBCN) is ranked Europe's 9th largest containership port by annual traffic.

The Port's area (sized 10 km2 / 4 mi2) is divided into 3 zones - Port Vell, Commercial Port, and Barcelona Free Port ("Zona Franca de Barcelona", industrial/logistics port).

There is an ongoing enlargement project that will double the port's size by diverting the Llobregat river to the south.

  • UN-LOCODE (United Nations location code) - ESBCN
  • supported by excellent road, rail, and air infrastructure
  • deep harbor water and berths (draft 11,5 m / 38 ft)
  • sheltered harbor area
  • access unrestricted by tides
  • capability to accommodate 9 cruise vessels at a time

Each of the Port's international cruise ship terminals has air conditioning, public phones, lifts and escalators, currency exchange kiosks, duty-free shops, gift/souvenir shops, cafe-restaurant, taxi rank, bus shuttle to downtown.

The cruise port is accessible the whole year round - 24/7, 365 days a tear.

The best vantage points to observe the cruise port's traffic are the cable car (connecting La Barceloneta neighborhood, Ciutat Vella district), the Ferry Station and the Montjuic Castle.

Cruise ships usually arrive in Barcelona in the early morning (4, 5, 6, 7, 9 am) and in the early afternoon (at 1, 2, 2:30 pm) and depart from Barcelona in the late afternoon or in the evening (at 5, 6, 7, 8:30, 10 pm).

Port Barcelona's cruise operations contribute to the city's economy (as revenues) around EUR 796 million (USD 900M) annually. The cruise port adds EUR 413 million (USD 467M) annually to Catalonia's GDP (gross domestic product). This industry also supports 6760 local jobs and generates EUR 152 million (USD 172M) in government taxes. Each cruise vessel in Barcelona generates on average EUR 1 million (USD 1,13M) in sales, contributes EUR 0,5 million (USD 565,417) to Catalonia's GDP, and generates EUR 0,2 million (USD 226,131) in Gov taxes.

In 2014, at its 6 existing cruise terminals, the seaport handled 764 ship calls and over 2,36 million passengers, with an economic impact of EUR 257 million (spent on restaurants, bars, visiting museums, churches, also on transportation and city shopping). On February 5, 2014, Royal Caribbean announced that for the summer 2015 season the Allure of the Seas ship will be based in Europe and homeported in Barcelona. Starting May 24, the Allure's program had 25 voyages with a repeating 7-night round-trip itinerary visiting the ports of Palma de Mallorca , Marseille , La Spezia, Civitavecchia-Rome, Naples. Right after the RCI's announcement, the Barcelona Port announced its estimation for the Allure's additional 158000 passengers and expected spending of around EUR 17,5 million in the city.

On July 23, 2015, Carnival Corporation announced its agreement with Barcelona Port Authority to invest over EUR 46 million in building a second (private) cruise terminal at Moll Adossat (read more in the "Terminal" section). The facility was opened on May 5, 2018. On September 13, 2015, the cruise port had its day record for cruise tourists, handling a total of 26,770 passengers on 4 cruise ships visiting the port in a single day. These were the vessels Norwegian Epic , Nieuw Amsterdam , Vision OTS and Allure OTS .

Port's cruise passenger growth in the period 2010-2015 was as follows: 2010 (2,350264 million, growth of 9,06%), 2011 (2,658691 million, growth of 13,06%), 2012 (2,408618 million, -9,4%), 2013 (2,599363 million, growth of 7,9%), 2014 (2,364292, -9%), 2015 (2,540302 million, growth of 7,4%).

The port ended 2015 with more turnaround passengers (embarking in Barcelona) reporting 3,7+ million (a 7% increase). The number included regular ferry passengers (~1,1 million) and cruise ship passengers (~2,54 million). The biggest increase in passengers concerned those leaving on ships using Barcelona as a turnaround port (where the itinerary begins and ends). In 2015, the cruise port posted its highest-ever number of handled passengers (2,5+ million). In terms of home-ported ships, Barcelona was ranked Europe's second - following Port Venice .

In November 2016, Port Barcelona presented its "Air Quality Improvement Plan" - an initiative aiming to reduce bad emissions from port activities. The document involved 25 actions rolled out in 53 operations. Among the most representative actions are promoting the LNG fuel (liquefied natural gas) as an alternative for both marine vessels and road freighters. The policy offers discounts for cleaner ships and replacing the Port's service fleet with electric vehicles. According to statistics, port activities produce 7,6% of the city's average NOx concentrations annually and 1,5% of the fine particulates. Promoting LNG-powered ships , terminal machinery and trucks is one of the plan's highlights. LNG fuel cuts NOx emissions by 80% and eliminates soot, particles and SOx emissions. The environmental discounts are on port fees. Currently, the law allows a max 5% port fee discount for environmental reasons.

For season 2019, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 830 ship calls with estimated 3,2 million tourists.

In May 2021, MSC Cruises signed a deal for building an exclusive (for MSC ships only) terminal in Port Barcelona. The facility will be operated under a 31-year concession, includes an MSC investment of ~EUR 33 million (~USD 40,2M) and is planned for completion and inauguration in 2024.

In June 2022 the Port announced that starting in 2023, all visiting cruise ship tourists will pay an additional EUR 3 (12+ hours stay) and EUR 1 (fewer than 12 hours stay). The new port fees are added to the existing EUR 1,75 per person and are usually included in the cruise fares listed upon booking. For comparison, since 2019, Port Marghera-Venice charges EUR 10 port fee.

(NEW) Catalonia Cruise Terminal G (Royal Caribbean)

In January 2024,  RCG/Royal Caribbean Group became the solitary contender/only bidder for Barcelona Port's newest Cruise Terminal G. The bid was placed by the consortium "Catalonia Cruise Terminal G" including RCG and CTI/Cruise Terminals International Ltd (2022-founded, London England UK-based company that owns, develops and manages cruise port infrastructure).

The approval for Terminal G was granted in April 2024.

RCG will co-fund the project (total budget EUR 85 million/USD 92M), start the construction works, and also will be the managing company of Terminal G, scheduled for completion/inauguration in 2027-Q1.

The modern facility encompasses an area of 54000 m2 (581250 ft2) including a dock/quay with length 450 m (1476 ft), which allows berthing for the world's most colossal cruise vessels .

Initially, three companies - NCL/Norwegian ,  Viking OCEAN  and  Virgin Voyages - planned to participate in the bidding process. However, as the process resumed, Royal Caribbean remained the sole bidder.

One of the tender's stipulations was that the partner/participating entity could not hold a controlling interest in Terminal G.

Until 2024, through its subsidiary Creuers del Port de Barcelona, RCG held a 38% stake in Barcelona Port Investment - the entity that manages Barcelona's cruise terminals A, B, and C (at Adossat Dock), along with World Trade Center's two terminals. The remaining 62% were owned by the Turkish company Global Ports Holding/GPH. Since 2023, GPH is the sole proprietor of Creuers del Port de Barcelona's shares as RCG opted to divest its stake (38%) to ensure compliance with the Terminal G tender's conditions.

(NEW) MSC Cruise Terminal

In May 2021, MSC was approved to build an exclusive (for MSC Cruises ships only) terminal.

The facility will be operated under a 31-year concession (2024 through 2055), sized 11670 m2 (125620 ft2) and designed by Ricardo Bofill.

The new MSC Cruise Terminal project is budgeted ~EUR 33 million (~USD 40,2M).

Construction works started in June 2021, with planned completion and inauguration in 2024.

Port Vell (Maremagnum) cruise terminal "M" (Old Port Barcelona)

The Port Vell port complex includes a fishing port, 2 yacht marinas, 1 cruise ship terminal, ferry terminal. Terminal M ("Maremagnum", near the World Trade Center) is for both ferry and cruise vessels. It has 3 small piers - named "South Pier" (S), "North Pier" (N) and "East Pier" (E). All terminals are designed to serve smaller ships. Their location is near the World Trade Center (which has a dedicated cruise parking area) and the Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel.

The Maremagnum terminal (aka "Port Vell terminal") is the port's smallest and the most central as location. The terminal is a short walking distance from the old city. The walking distance from here to La Ramblas street is some 10 min. There is a tour bus stopping at Portal de la Pau (at the harbor's end of Las Ramblas).

The Port Vell area has the Maremagnum (shopping mall, nightlife complex), the IMAX Port Vell (cinema complex) and the famous Aquarium Barcelona (with over 8000 fishes and 11 sharks kept in 22 seawater basins).

Moll Adossat Pier (Palacruceros) cruise terminal

At Adossat Pier are located 4 terminals - at berth A, berth B, berth C, berth D (Palacruceros). They have the biggest distance from downtown. Here berth most (including the largest) cruise ships. This dock handles over 85% of the visiting ships. There is a blue bus shuttle between the Port and the city center (Las Ramblas).

Moll Adossat Barcelona (or Muelle Adosado in Spanish) is the port's biggest wharf and also the newest cruise terminal. At this long quay can be berthed 4 large vessels simultaneously.

In October 2013 was announced a plan for the expansion of Terminal D and the building of a new Terminal E serving ships with capacity 4500+ passengers.

(NEW) Carnival's "Helix Cruise Center" terminal (Barcelona Adossat)

At the end of April 2017, the world's largest cruise shipping company Carnival Corporation released renderings of its new cruise terminal at Barcelona Adossat. The facility was named "Helix Cruise Center" and inaugurated on May 5, 2018, as Europe's newest passenger terminal.

  • The new terminal (cost EUR 46 million / USD 55 million) is designed to handle Carnival's largest ships, among which are the new class LNG-powered vessels .
  • The facility is designed by Batlle I Roig Arquitectura, sized 12,500 m2 (134,550 ft2). Paired with an existing facility, it represents Europe's largest (combined) passenger terminal.
  • Building's design company is "Battle I Roig". The plans show a modern architectural style featuring straight lines, minimalistic concepts, a contemporary and comfortable environment.
  • Construction works officially started in July 2016 and were completed in May 2018.

The new terminal is located at Adossat Wharf. Currently, this berthing is used by 8 of Carnival's all 10 brand companies. The terminal is used as both destination (call port) and homeport (for Barcelona turnaround operations). Carnival expects to handle here 1+ million passengers annually after the opening of the new (2nd) terminal.

This terminal has its own pier-side parking facility (max capacity 300 vehicles) dedicated to embarking passengers.

The new terminal is exclusively used by Carnival Corporation ships (only) as the company was granted with exclusive concession rights to operate the facilities. In addition to the new cruise terminal in Barcelona, Carnival Corporation also operates exclusive terminals at ports Puerta Maya (Cozumel Mexico) , Grand Turk Island , Mahogany Bay (Roatan Island, Honduras) , Amber Cove-Puerta Plata (Dominicana) , Long Beach (California USA) , plus 2 private Caribbean islands (in the Bahamas) - Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays .

World Trade Center

The World Trade Center has two terminals – pier South and pier North. Those terminals provide easy Las Ramblas tours. There is an overflow area at the East berth.

San Bertran cruise terminal

The port's Sant Bertran wharf is a terminal for the ferry and small-sized cruise vessels. It is used for docking of smaller cruise ships only during peak season.

The building's interior size is 2200 m2 (23680 ft2). The wharf's width is only 12 m (40 ft). The berth's length is 255 m (837 ft) allowing max ship length of 220 m (720 ft) and a max draft of 11 m (36 ft).

The distance from San Bertran to the city is 400 m (1310 ft).

Port Barcelona Ferry Terminals

The port has 3 terminals dedicated to ferry shipping traffic:

  • Terminal Drassanes is operated by Balearia .
  • Terminal Ferry de Barcelona is operated by Trasmediterranea .
  • Grimaldi Terminal Barcelona is operated by GNV-Grandi Navi Veloci .

Each of the ferry terminals has a ticket office, air conditioning, public phones, cafe-restaurant, taxi rank, and provides short-term parking for check-in passengers (before embarkation).

Long-term parking is not permitted (only drop-off areas).

Long-term parking is available at the World Trade Center (phone number 0034 93 508 80 62), at Valet Parking Cruceros (phone number 0034 93 511 37 44) and at Parking Viajeros (phone number 0034 618 70 79 70).

The port's ferry terminals are with convenient underground (metro) and bus connections.

Hotels in Barcelona with shuttle to Cruise Port?

Cruise ships dock at the waterfront in Port Vell , at the southern end of Las Ramblas in the centre of Barcelona. The majority of cruise passengers choose to stay in the central areas.

Nearest hotel is the Eurostars Gran Marina . If you’re departing from the North, South, or East terminal at the World Trade Centre (WTC) you can easily walk from this hotel to your ship (no shuttle needed) . However, most larger ships depart from the Quai Adossat at terminal A, B, C or D which is over a mile from the Eurostars Gran Marina hotel. Then it’s better to take an inexpensive taxi to your designated cruise terminal.

Several hotels are located really close to Barcelona cruise port but still are too far to walk, esp. with your luggage. Taxis in Barcelona are relatively cheap so it’s very easy to transfer from your pre-cruise hotel to your cruise terminal. Just ask your hotel concierge or front desk to arrange a taxi for you.

Which Barcelona hotels offer a cruise transfer?

Taxi’s are plentiful and not very expensive so it’s very easy to get to your cruise terminal. The hotel porter can flagged down a taxi for you or the hotel concierge or front desk will call one for you. All very easy. Price will be around 15 Euro, depending on traffic. Barcelona hotels can always organize a transfer to the cruise port for you at an additional cost.

You can also arrange a private transfer yourself, which will be very convenient but more expensive than catching a taxi.

Our advice is not to base your hotel choice on shuttles.

When cruises are cheaper than trains and planes

P lanes, trains and automobiles may be the obvious and often most cost-effective ways to get from A to B but, surprisingly, cruise ships can be, too.

Repositioning sailings are the unsung bargains of the cruise world, where canny travellers can often pick up voyages at vastly reduced rates – and give more orthodox forms of transport a run for their money.

The key to finding such a deal comes from studying cruise schedules for sailings – some of which may be just one or two nights – that go directly from one place to another.

While low-cost flights are generally accepted as the cheapest way to travel internationally, global airfares are on the rise – and by the time you pile on charges for luggage, food and drink and the cost of travelling from the airport to the city centre – where cruise ships invariably dock – taking the sea-going route can emerge as the unlikely winner (and you’ll arrive in considerably more style).

It can even work for travelling to different parts of the UK, though options tend to be restricted to Fred Olsen Cruise Lines when it repositions ships on overnight voyages between the likes of Southampton and Newcastle, Rosyth or other ports further north.

Italy to Spain from £54

For city-hopping stays in and around Europe, MSC Cruises is the one to watch, as it enables customers to book many of its Mediterranean cruises on a port-to-port basis, rather than taking the entire voyage.

For instance, travellers can book one-nighters between Genoa and Barcelona or Genoa and Marseilles for as little as £54pp, while an overnight sailing between Valencia and Marseilles is £72pp, with these prices obviously including meals. The £54 figure is based on an October 11 departure. For a flight from Genoa to Barcelona on the same date, Skyscanner (skyscanner.net) quotes a service with ITA Airways for £111.99pp, including luggage.

Tony Andrews, the managing director of travel agency cruise.co.uk, says: “MSC doesn’t talk about this enough, as these one-nighters are a great way for people to have a city-break-style experience with a cruise as part of it. It’s a really interesting way to do it.”

The leisurely way to cross the pond

Transatlantic crossings are another potential area to pick up a sea-going bargain, but it’s a question of waiting until the price is right, as rates continually fluctuate.

Many lines offer transatlantic repositionings in spring and autumn, while Cunard runs the only regular crossings between Southampton and New York on its liner Queen Mary 2.

On one occasion some years ago, when prices dropped to just a few hundred pounds, I was sailing from Southampton on the QM2 and met a passenger who had opted to do the same purely because the rates were so much cheaper than flying and he wasn’t in a rush (the crossing takes a week).

Cunard’s prices have since risen overall, but there are still reduced rates on some departures that make this tactic worth pursuing if you fancy a more leisurely way to cross the pond.

Alison Earnshaw, the managing director of online agencies Cruise 118 and Six Star Cruises, says that when rates drop to £600 or £700, taking the ocean route becomes more cost-effective as transatlantic flights have become so expensive.

Another plus is the lack of luggage restrictions, because on cruises you can famously take as much as will fit in your cabin.

“We’ve had people booking to sail to see family in the States with lots of luggage that they’re taking out for them, and then flying back lighter,” she explains. “Alternatively, we’ve had customers who’ve flown to New York for the shopping and sail back as they can bring as much as they want.”

Swap Blighty for Barbados – for £1,129

The Caribbean is another region that comes up trumps for value, with P&O Cruises offering a two-week repositioning voyage from Southampton to Barbados (with stops in Antigua, St Kitts and St Lucia) from £1,129. This price is for an October 18 departure, and includes the flight back to Britain.

A return fare to Barbados with British Airways (including luggage) during the same period is £733pp. Inter-island flights with Caribbean Airlines (caribbean-airlines.com) between Barbados and other islands in this itinerary amount to approximately £714pp. Add in hotel stays and it’s clear just how much you can save by taking to the water.

Going global

Miles Morgan, the founder of Miles Morgan Travel, cited world cruises as another option for good-value deals, when cruise companies carve itineraries into segments if they haven’t been selling well, enabling customers to buy legs such as Sydney to Singapore.

“You need to look at sailings a few months in advance, as this is when they tend to be carved up,” he says. “So look now for autumn sailings and at Christmas for the spring. There might be nothing going or you might do well.”

I soon found a 17-night sector of a world cruise on Cunard’s Queen Victoria, departing Singapore on March 26 and arriving in Cape Town on April 12. It calls at Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Port Elizabeth in South Africa. From £1,099pp, not including flights, it works out at £64pp a night – about the same as a Travelodge.

Flights for the same routing between Singapore and Cape Town for the same time period via Skyscanner amount to approximately £1,150pp, including luggage. Another win for the cruise.

Commentary | Commentary: Cruising is bad for environment, but improving

Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas gets floated out at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France during a nearly 15-hour operation from Sept. 15-16, 2023. (Bernard Biger/Chantiers de l’Atlantique)

Cruise ships are noted for their hospitality, and everyone knows it’s important to stay hydrated, so this was a nice touch. Cruise ships are also noted for food. From buffets to lounge bars and poolside cafes to fine dining restaurants, every food option is available. At each meal or snack, beer and wine in a bottle are available.

Ever the environmentalist, I got to wondering what they did with all the empty containers. With cruise ships now transporting the population of small towns, the waste is enormous.

My ship, the Pursuit by Azamara, sailed with 664 passengers and a crew of over 300. The Icon, by Royal Caribbean, carries 10,000 passengers plus crew. Cruise ships have been estimated to release twice the amount of CO2 into the atmosphere per person than flying and staying in a four-star hotel.

barcelona cruise ship to airport

I dialed the front desk and was pleased to discover that an environmental officer is now required on cruise ships in Europe. Duarte, an articulate man of Polish descent in his 50s, was happy to meet with me and show me what they did with all those plastic and glass bottles. I was pleased to find that the captain can lose his license for failing to abide by the environmental regulations, so they listen to the environmental officer. He also said that regulations in Europe are much stricter than those in the United States.

So, what becomes of the thousands of containers that would otherwise clog landfills and end up in our air, water and soil? They are smashed into pieces or crushed flat. All of the glass bottles used on the Pursuit in one week can be crushed into boxes that make up only 3-4 cubic feet. The plastic bottles are squished into a box the size of 1½ cubic feet.  They are offloaded at each port in recyclable cardboard boxes. From there they can be sent to recycling facilities by the local port officials.

Food waste is finely chopped and discarded, at least 12 miles from shore. Human waste is processed by non-aerobic digesters and treated before being discharged. All of this is good, but not standard practice by all cruise ships.

barcelona cruise ship to airport

Railroads emit fewer carbon emissions than trucks and ships. Although I drive an electric car, I took the train to and from my home in Boynton Beach to the Miami airport. In Portugal, the train took us from Porto to Lisbon, in comfort, where we boarded the Pursuit. The next time you plan a trip, think about your carbon footprint and leave the old gas guzzler in the garage.
