Let’s start things off on the right foot with the Chianti Safari: Tuscan Villas, Cheese, Wine and Lunch from Florence . Who thought that safaris and off-roading would work so perfectly with cheese and wine?

This tour is so seamlessly-organized and melds adventure with relaxation and appreciation for the finer things in life wonderfully.

Start out by meeting your guide and the rest of your group at 9:00 am in the center of Firenze in the Piazzi dei Cavalleggeri. You’ll then be escorted onto the awesome 4×4 minibus that’s impossible to miss!

Because you’re going to go off-roading, meaning you’ll get to see parts of Chianti that the vast majority of visitors don’t.

Stop first at Villa le Corti, owned by one of the most prominent Italian families. This gorgeous estate is located over a hillside and offers incredible views, but the real star of the show is the wine tasting!

With your personable, knowledgeable tour you’ll be able to learn a lot in a way that’s unpretentious and welcoming.

Travel further into the hills and enjoy the vast countryside as you head to a smaller, more quaint winery called “Poggio Torselli”. By new means is this breathtaking place tiny, however!

These premium Tuscan ateliers will teach you all about their ancient traditions combined with innovation result in their award-winning wines.

What is the Best Way to do a Chianti Wine Tour From Florence?

Guided tour : The most convenient way is by taking a guided tour. We recommend the Private Tour in Siena, San Gimagnano and Chianti Day Trip from Florence . However there are many tour operators offering day trips to Chianti and they typically include transportation, wine tasting and a visit to a few hilltop towns.

Drive : You can rent a car and drive through the winding roads of Chianti. Be sure to bring a map and a good GPS. The roads can be quite confusing and are not well marked. Keep in mind the wine tastings might make driving back to Florence a bit challenging. Be careful you don’t indulge too much!

Bike or Vespa : If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take a Vespa tour around the vineyards or rent a bicycle and explore the region on two wheels.

No matter how you choose to explore the region, you should end your day trip with a delicious meal at a local restaurant. Chianti is famous for more than its wine there are plenty of restaurants to try! If you have the opportunity go to the Bistecca Alla Fiorentina!

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing Chianti Winery Tours from Florence

When choosing Chianti winery tours from Florence, there are several key factors to consider to ensure a memorable and fulfilling experience. Chianti, nestled in the heart of Tuscany, offers a unique viticultural landscape that differs significantly from the wine regions of Southern or Western Tuscany.

Understand Chianti’s Unique Wine Profile :

Chianti is renowned for its Chianti and Chianti Classico wines, primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. This region’s wines are known for their robust flavour, high acidity, and tannic nature, contrasting with the more rounded and often bolder wines from Southern Tuscany, where the climate imparts different characteristics.

Diversity of Tours :

The Chianti region offers an array of tours, each providing something distinct. From intimate small-group experiences focusing on local winemaking traditions to more extensive tours that include scenic off-road adventures, there’s a tour to match every preference.

It’s crucial to carefully read tour descriptions to select one that aligns with your interests, whether it’s a deep dive into organic winemaking or an exploration of historical wineries. I’ve tried to include as broad a range as possible in this post.

Consider Group Size and Tour Length :

Different tours offer varying group sizes and lengths. Smaller groups generally allow for a more personalised experience, while larger groups can be more social but potentially less intimate.

Also, tour durations vary – some are short and sweet, perfect for a quick taste of Chianti, while others span a full day, delving deeper into the region’s wine culture.

Food Pairings and Local Cuisine :

Many tours include food pairings or meals. Chianti wines pair wonderfully with Tuscan cuisine, known for its rustic and hearty flavours. Understanding (and seeking out) these pairings can enrich your tasting experience.

Accessibility and Physical Requirements :

Consider the physical demands of your chosen tour. Some may involve walking through vineyards or navigating cellars with stairs, which might be challenging for those with mobility issues.

Make sure to read the fine print on all tour descriptions, as well as reviews, to save yourself from any surprises on the day. If in doubt, always contact the tour organiser to check finer details with them.

Customisation and Private Tours :

For a more tailored experience, look for tours that offer customisation or are private. These can often accommodate special requests and provide a more individualised experience, especially if you have specific wineries or types of wine in mind.

Seasonal Considerations :

The time of year can greatly influence your tour experience. Harvest season, typically in late September to October, offers a unique opportunity to see the winemaking process in action. Summer is typically very hot and very busy. Winter and early spring meanwhile, will be quiet.

Some tours will operate on a much reduced schedule. Also, note that vines will be relatively bare at this time of year (as grapes will have been harvested in Autumn and will be just starting to grow again). So don’t expect to see full vines!

Chianti Wine Tasting from Florence: FAQ

What can I expect from a Chianti winery tour from Florence? You can look forward to visiting various wineries in the Chianti region, known for its picturesque vineyards and olive groves. The tours typically include sampling an array of wines, predominantly made from the Sangiovese grape, and exploring the intricacies of the winemaking process.

Often, the experience is enhanced with food pairings featuring local Tuscan specialities. It’s an ideal way to gain insights into Tuscany’s rich viticultural heritage.

How long is a typical wine tasting tour in Chianti? Tour durations vary considerably. Shorter tours might last around 2-3 hours, offering a brief but delightful taste of Chianti, whereas full-day tours can extend to 8-10 hours. I recommend considering how much time you’re willing to spend and what you want to experience when choosing a tour.

Are there different types of tours available? There’s a wide range of tours to suit various interests and preferences. From group tours in minibuses, ideal for socialising, to more exclusive private tours in luxury vehicles, and even adventurous off-road experiences. Each type of tour offers something unique, from exploring organic wineries to visiting historic estates or family-run vineyards.

Is transportation included in the wine tours? Most tours from Florence include transportation, typically in comfortable, air-conditioned coaches, minivans, or private cars. This is incredibly convenient as it takes the hassle out of navigating the region’s rural roads, and also means you won’t need a designated driver amongst your group, who won’t be able to drink.

Do I need to have prior knowledge about wines? Not at all. These tours cater to a range of knowledge levels, from beginners to wine aficionados. The guides and sommeliers are skilled at tailoring their information to suit everyone’s understanding.

What should I wear on a wine tasting tour? I recommend opting for comfortable and appropriate clothing for the weather. Some Chianti tours from Florence will involve walking through vineyards, so I’d recommend that you wear comfortable footwear for this. For tours during warmer months, consider a hat and sunscreen.

Can I buy wine on these tours? Yes, you’ll often have the opportunity to purchase wines directly from the wineries. Some even offer international shipping services, allowing you to enjoy your favourites back home.

Are food and meals included in the tour? Many tours include some form of food pairing or meals, which could range from light snacks to full multi-course lunches. Check the specifics of your tour for details.

Is there a minimum age for participants? The legal drinking age in Italy is 18, but younger participants can often join the tour when accompanied by adults, although they won’t partake in wine tasting.

Are the tours wheelchair accessible? Accessibility varies between tours. Some historic wineries and vineyards may have limited access. It’s best to check with the tour provider if you require specific accommodations.

What happens in case of bad weather? Most tours operate come rain or shine.

In severe weather, arrangements might be altered, or the tour may be rescheduled. I advise checking the tour’s cancellation policy for details on how they handle inclement weather.

Can I customise a private wine tour? Certainly. Private tours usually offer the flexibility to tailor the itinerary to your interests. This can include visiting specific wineries or focusing on particular aspects of the Chianti region’s wine culture. It’s an excellent option if you’re seeking a more personalised experience.

How far in advance should I book a wine tour? To avoid disappointment, especially during peak tourist seasons, I recommend booking your tour a few weeks in advance. This ensures you get the tour and date that best suits your schedule.

Are there any health or safety measures in place? Tour operators generally adhere to current health and safety guidelines, which may include measures like reduced group sizes and enhanced sanitisation practices. It’s wise to check with your tour provider for their specific health and safety policies.

Can dietary restrictions be accommodated? Most tours are happy to cater to dietary needs like vegetarian or gluten-free options, provided you inform them in advance. It’s important to communicate any dietary restrictions when making your booking to ensure they can accommodate your needs.

  • One-two-year-old Chianti is distinguished by a transparent ruby color, a fruity aroma. It is highly acidic and has a decorated taste. The grapes for it are collected from 8 sub-regions of Chianti.
  • Chianti Classico is made only from Sangiovese, which has been successfully cultivated here for thousands of years. The grapes are grown only in the historical area of Chianti Classico. Aging for 7 months in a bottle is a mandatory period. This wine has a full-bodied complex taste and a long aging period. Its dark red color with purple shades is fascinating, and the berry-violet aroma is unique.

The wines are paired perfectly with schiacciata and cold cuts, and you’ll uncover the secrets of Chianti's master salumieri and discover why charcuterie plays an integral role in the region's culture.

The next stop on your Chianti wine tour is a family-run Chianti winery focused on the small production of organic wines. As evening draws near, you'll stroll through the lush vineyards and step into the historic cellar with the owners on a guided tour. Before we depart for Florence, you’ll savor one last tasting of three exquisite wines perfectly paired with Tuscan seasonal products. An unforgettable way to wrap up our wine-tasting journey.

Enjoy a relaxed and intimate experience with all the details taken care of.

To make your Chianti wine tour more personalized, we keep our group sizes small with a maximum of 19 guests. Round-trip private transport is also included so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning scenery around you.

the tour guide, Lorenzo, was amazing. He really did a great job of keeping the tour interesting during the travel time periods between stops. My one recommendation - give each tour customer a full glass of wine to drink at the end of each tasting event.

10 Best Chianti Wines According to the Italians

chianti wine tour reviews

Where is Chianti Wine Coming From?

Chianti is dry red wine which comes from the area of Tuscany between the cities of Pisa, Florence, and Siena. The Chianti area was originally delimited in 1716 by  Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and later extended to meet the growing demand.

Chianti vs. Chianti Classico

Chianti wines are made mostly from the  Sangiovese grape.  Canaiolo Nero, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other local grapes can be added to a Chianti blend, however, they cannot represent more than 20%.

When looking at a bottle of wine from Chianti you will see the following on the label:

Chianti DOCG  ( Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita ).   These wines come from producers of larger volumes that source their grapes from the greater region of Chianti.

Higher quality Chianti DOCG may be made from grapes of one of the seven particular sub-zone of Chianti.  In that case the label will mention Rùfina, Colli Senesi, Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentini, Colline Pisane, Montalbano, or Chianti Superiore.

Chianti DOCG wines should be drunk when young – within 3 years from their production.

Chianti Classico DOCG  is an area separate from Chianti. These wines come from vineyards  at higher altitudes than those of Chianti DOCG. The cooler conditions slow the ripening of Sangiovese and give wines with greater acidity and herbal aromas.

The trademark always found on bottles of Chianti Classico is the black rooster, a historic symbol of the Chianti Military League.

There are three levels of quality within the Chianti Classico.

Chianti Classico Annata

These wines must be aged for 12 months before they are sold. Simple wines with high acidity, usually coming from younger vines in the vineyard,

Chianti Classico Riserva

Riserva wines are more complex and structured. Must be aged for at least 24 months including 3 months in a bottle.

Chianti Classico Riserva Grand Selezioni

Represents the best wine of Chianti . Grapes are sourced from a single estate or vineyard and must be aged for 6 months longer than Riserva.

Best Chianti Wines

There are more than 300 estates in Central Tuscany, and only a handful attracted critics’ attention and wide customer recognition.

ViniBuoni D’Italia , an Italian wine guide published every year, named these wineries as the best of Chianti in 2020 and “crowned by the public”.

1. Castello di Monsanto, Barberino Val d’Elsa

Chianti Classico DOCG 2017

The Bianchi family manages Castello di Monsanto for more than half a century. During this time, the family changed the tradition of Chianti by introducing separate vinification of grapes from different vineyards. Previously, such selection and precision were not common in Chianti.

The 2017 Chianti Classico Annata contains 90% of Sangiovese and 10% of Colorino and Canaiolo.

This is a medium-bodied wine with pronounced aromas of  red cherry and currant and remarkable c oncentration. Good balance and very good acidity despite very warm 2017 temperatures.

2. Frascole di Dicomano, Rufina

Chianti Rufina DOCG Riserva 2016

Rufina is the smallest sub-area of Chianti.

The family-owned Frascole estate is overlooking the  Dicomano village located near the green Tuscan Apennines away from industrial areas and busy streets.  The grapes grow at approximately 400 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level on limestone soils.

The family uses organic methods and only manual harvesting.

In the bottle of Chianti Rufina Riserva 2016, you will find  90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino, the local grape variety adding beautiful color and spicing up the blend.

3. Badia a Coltibuono, Gaiole in Chianti

Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva 2016

Organic wine from  the Stucchi Prinetti family who own  Badia a Coltibuono since 1846.  The fifth- generation,  Emanuela, Paolo, and Roberto Stucchi Prinetti manage this historic estate of  150 acres of vineyards along with 50 acres of olive trees.

As anywhere in Chianti, Sangiovese is dominating the blend. However, the family also produces other traditional varieties that are allowed but often omitted in Chianti Classico: Canaiolo Nero, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Foglia Tonda, Malvasia Nera, Mammolo, Pugnitello, and Sanforte.

The Riserva wines are grown on the vineyard that dates back to 1937.

Here is how the winery describes the Riserva: “Intense, deep ruby red color with subtle glimmers of garnet. The wine shows a splendid, full nose with hints of blackberries and pleasant notes of tobacco and spice. In the mouth, the wine is soft with an elegant, fresh finish and a persistent, generous acidity in the aftertaste. Full of mature tannins and fruitiness.”

4. Val delle Corti, Radda in Chianti

Val delle Corti’s vineyards are planted on marly limestone soil, rich in stony material and high in mineral content.  The soil, and, especially the altitude, make Radda wines in general known for high acidity.

Also, the vines are grown on the eastern-exposed side of the hill, receiving shade of the Monte alla Croce mountain, which allows the grapes to ripen evenly and retain acidity.

Therefore, this Riserva has a great  potential to improve over the years to express the quintessential features of Chianti Sangiovese: minerality, fresh fruit, and outstanding elegance.

The 100% Sangiovese Riserva is only made in exceptionally good years with the best Sangiovese selected from the estate’s oldest vineyards planted over 40 years ago.

Chianti wine tours from Florence

  • DESCRIPTION
  • CANCELLATION POLICY

Chianti & Super Tuscan small-group wine tour in a nutshell

Chianti Wine Tour will take you to explore one of the best wine-growing regions of Tuscany as well as a premier travel destination. This Chianti tour departs from Florence and operates from Mondays to Saturdays, all year round, with at least 2 participants.

  • Small-Group tour, a maximum of 8 people.
  • Guided 7 hr excursion by our English-speaking wine expert.
  • Discover 3 quality wineries in Chianti Classico (with tastings of Chianti, Chianti Classico, Riserva, and Super Tuscans).
  • Learn from a professional Sommelier how to approach wine and olive oil.
  • Enjoy a delicious family-style meal at the second small winery.

This Chianti Wine Tour is an authentic wine experience to get to know two unique wines of Tuscany, Chianti Classico Docg and Super Tuscan Igt.

What to expect Your excursion commences with a drive through the breathtaking Tuscan countryside as you delve into the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Throughout the trip, you will visit 3 wineries, two family-owned small-scale cellars, and a medium-sized winery. This enables you to connect with the proprietor on a much more personal level while he/she shows you the finer aspects of viticulture. Our experienced guides will be with you teaching you about the wines and how to taste them. In addition to Chianti Classico wines, you can enjoy the IGT “Super Tuscans.”

Later we will be driving through the beautiful countryside to get to the second winery; this will be a tiny organic cellar where you will meet the owner, an amiable man who will introduce you to organic winemaking. We will sit down to enjoy a fabulous home-cooked meal matched with the different wines.

Now it's time to go to the third winery, another exceptional boutique cellar producing high-quality wines. Along the day tour, you will also have the chance to taste an excellent extra-virgin olive oil called Laudemio.

Chianti Wine Growing Region: By far the most famous of the Tuscan wines, Chianti is a red wine produced in the Chianti region and is made from the Sangiovese grape, which gives it a note of summer fruit and a hint of spices. Not all Chianti wines are created equally, though, and there is a consensus that Chianti Classico wines are much higher quality. This is because they are produced in a tiny region explicitly known for Chianti production and are also held to a much more stringent standard in the winemaking process.

  • Comfortable air-conditioned minivan Maximum of 8 people per group
  • English-speaking guide expert in wine
  • Visit 3 wineries in the Chianti Classico region
  • Traditional Tuscan lunch with wine at the second winery
  • Wine and extra virgin olive oil tasting

Wine tour in Chianti

It’s hard to begin to describe how magical of a day it was on the Chianti and Super Tuscan wine tour. To start, Andrea was the most genuine, authentic and inspiring tour guide that I have ever had. He made the experience seamless, from taking us place to place and describing the scenery around us, to also helping us discover much more about the wines we were tasting than could ever be imagined. The people we met along the way at each winery were special in their own right too, as well as every wine we tasted. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that asked me about a Tuscany wine tour in a heart beat. I only hope to have the privilege to be able to go on this tour again one day. Grazie mille!!!

chianti wine tour reviews

Our experience with Italy & Wine was phenomenal. Filippo was our guide and he was incredibly knowledgeable about Wine and all things Tuscany. His passion for his homeland was palpable and his local contacts and friendships with the wineries that he took us to allowed for an unforgettable experience. He was kind and so genuine. We had the best experience possible and I highly recommend this Italy & Wine and specifically Filippo. A++

chianti wine tour reviews

We had a group of four and had an excellent tour! Matteo was an expert and knowledgeable guide. All of the wineries we visited were friendly with great wine. And I can't forget lunch - the food was delicious and the winery owner shared his passion for natural wines.

chianti wine tour reviews

As a couple that frequents wine tours with our fair share of winery tours, we found the Chianti & Super Tuscan 3 winery tour to be an absolute gem! The first winery was a fantastic place to dive into the winemaking process, reigniting our passion for the craft. The second winery, a cozy gem, was all about savoring incredible Tuscan cuisine that left our taste buds dancing with delight. Our last stop was a serene stroll through the vineyards, munching on fresh grapes and enjoying three unique wines from Chianti. We highly recommend it to fellow wine enthusiasts. Chianti has truly won our hearts!

chianti wine tour reviews

I have to say that this is one of the best wine tours I have experienced. The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. All three stops was great, but the lunch was spectacular. Thanks for a great experience. Next we are in Florence we will try the truffle tour.

chianti wine tour reviews

This was one of the highlights of our trip! We learned so much and had a beautiful time at the wineries. Matteo was so knowledgeable and shared things in a way everyone could understand.

chianti wine tour reviews

Had the best time today visiting three fabulous wineries in the Chianti wine country! All three were friendly, warm, and very welcoming. The wines were all excellent and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were very lucky to be on the tour so it felt very private and we were also lucky to have a fantastic driver and wine expert in Matteo Perinti. His knowledge and passion was clear to see and we learnt lot from him on the tour - a big thank you to him. A great day in a spectacular part of Italy. Bellisimo!

chianti wine tour reviews

Really great tour! delicious wine, well explained! Julia was wonderful!

chianti wine tour reviews

Our tour was everything we hoped it would be and more. Each winery showcased a different location, process, philosophy, and 3 delicious wines. Lunch was unforgettable, and all the views of Tuscany were what we had dreamt of for so long. All that said, it was our guide Julia that made the day truly special for us. Her depth of knowledge, enthusiasm, and taste brought everything together perfectly. She’s just so cool and charming, we felt very much at ease and that we spent the day with a friend. Our sincere thanks for a beautiful and memorable day.

chianti wine tour reviews

Matteo was a great tour guide! He taught us so much about wine and Florentine history. We will definitely recommend this tour to friends and family.

chianti wine tour reviews

My fiancé and I have been in Italy for 3 weeks, and this will easily be the highlight of our holiday. Mateo was absolutely terrific, and every winery we visited was excellent quality, and the owners were incredibly hospitable and kind. We cannot recommend this tour enough and want to thank Mateo and all the partner wineries for an exceptional time. Thanks! - Justin & Haylie

chianti wine tour reviews

On a recent trip to Italy, we were lucky enough to book one of your tours! Our guide, Mateo was fantastic! He is incredibly knowledgeable about all of the wines of Italy and was able to share so much about the historical significance of the industry. He is also warm, inclusive, and has a wonderful sense of humor. My husband is a wine aficionado and thoroughly enjoyed a lively discussion with Mateo about his own tastes in wine and about the producers he frequently purchases. The incredible beauty of Tuscany only added to what was already an amazing experience. We definitely plan to book again on our next trip.

chianti wine tour reviews

I have to say that the wine tour was the highlight of our trip. The selection of wineries was absolutely perfect. They were so cool and places that we would have never found on our own. Filipe was also an incredible guide. However, getting to visit Tenuto Montiani was something incredibly special. We did so many tours on this trip and this soooooo much better than every other tour we did. this tour will be a "must-do" for anyone we know that is going to Florence in the future. I cannot stress how incredible this was. Thank you so much,

chianti wine tour reviews

I booked this tour for my wife and I on our honeymoon and it was one of the most incredible experiences. We both loved the wineries our incredible tour guide Filippo took us to, and learned so much. Of all the things we did, this was one that we will always talk about and remember. Filippo has brilliant taste , and just an incredible person all around. We really loved our time with him and the other couple we were with, as well as the amazing views, weather, food and wine. We are planning to come back to spend more time in this region and would do this again in a heartbeat. 10/10 would recommend.

chianti wine tour reviews

We had a great time on the Chianti and Supertuscan tour! Our guide, Filippo, was incredibly knowledge about the wines of the region and personable. We loved each of the 3 wineries we visited— great wine, informative tastings, a delicious lunch, and even an adorable winery dog (Spritz)! I would highly recommend this tour to experience the wine and culture of Tuscany. Great day trip from Florence.

chianti wine tour reviews

This was an absolutely fabulous experience. Highly recommend, a great way to see Tuscany's wine county and meet some winemakers that are producing an incredible product. We booked a few tours with this group and each day was awesome. We had Giovanni for this tour and another and he a world class guide. Super knowledgeable about wine, Florentine history, and world history. We learned a ton on this tour and overall had a wonderful time.

chianti wine tour reviews

Had a great time on the super Tuscan wine tour with Matteo. It was so convenient, they drove us everywhere. They selected AMAZING wineries in the Chianti Classico region, and we ate and drank magnificently. There were only 6 of us, plus our guide, so we enjoyed how individual the trip was. Food was spectacular. Views were spectacular. Matteo was great. Will 100% do another tour next time we're in Italy, probably the truffle tour because it sounded delightful. Also, I never write google reviews because I honestly don't care enough, but this was amazing enough to leave a review. Worth every penny.

chianti wine tour reviews

Wonderful experience on our wine tour. My wife and I could not have enjoyed it more. If you are going to on wine tour you should do a smaller group. We were able to come close with the others on the tour, the guide and even the owners of the three wineries we visited. Our guide was great and was really excited to spend the day with us and show us Italy a beautiful part of the country. I was scared that I would not enjoy the wines, as I am not a huge red wine drinker, but I loved every wine I drank. The lunch we had at the second winery was the best meal I had in Italy

chianti wine tour reviews

I so enjoyed our day visiting 3 beautiful wineries. Our host Mattel is so much fun. He clearly loves his work and sharing his passion for wine. The wineries tucked into the Tuscan hills was picture perfect. Lunch at one of the vineyards was amazing. Highly recommend this lovely relaxing wine tasting experience.

chianti wine tour reviews

Wonderful experience! Must do experience if visiting Florence. Matteo was out host and was fun, friendly and very knowledgeable about the wine. Wineries and lunch we're outstanding!

chianti wine tour reviews

To visit Tuscany and do a wine tour was one item definitely on my bucket list. On a recent tour of Europe, my friend and I took a side step and booked this fabulous tour at the very last minute. Vittorio picked us up from Central Florence, which was easy and took us and two other girls to three magnificent vineyards in the beautiful Tuscan countryside. Our first stop was Tenuta La Novella where we were welcomed by Josie. What a fabulous vineyard set high in the Tuscan Hills. Vittorio shared his excellent knowledge of the wines as did Josie about the process of making wine. We were treated with generous tastings and also locally grown olive oil, which was amazing. We were then treated with a fabulous lunch by Michel at Tenuta Montiani Winery who was as passionate about his food as his wine. It was such a treat to indulge in locally grown products and recipes that had been handed down in generations. Michel made us feel right at home and, as one would expect, we overindulged! Our final winery was La Sala where we were well looked after by Lorenzo. Lorenzo was so much fun, very knowledgeable and also had a fantastic sense of humor.  Again, the wines were amazing. I fell in love with Tuscany even more, when I thought I couldn't. After a fantastic day, Vittorio was kind enough to take us to an amazing scenic lookout where we were able to take fabulous photos of the beautiful city of Florence. I honestly thought I had died and gone to heaven....and I did say, that if I died right then, I was going to die happy. I would certainly recommend this tour. Vittorio was very knowledgeable and all the hosts at the wineries made us feel more than welcome. Now on my bucket list is a return to Tuscany and to stay in a Tuscan Villa

chianti wine tour reviews

My wife and I did a two-week vacation in Italy and this Tuscany Wine Tour was the best part of the trip! Matteo was excellent and we strongly recommend him. On the way to the first winery, he took us to Piazzale Michelangelo. I mentioned I like photography and he was nice enough to recommend a great photo vantage point. He took us to three wineries and throughout the trip provided us with wine history and areas of interest at the level we could understand. He also spoke excellent English. The first winery was family owned and a beautiful view. We got there just in time before they harvested! Matteo then took us to the second winery (also family owned), where we had a home cooked lunch from the owner who also loves to cook in addition to making wine. He used locally grown honey from his mother in law and we had all sorts of cheeses and antipasti, followed by the best carbonara we've ever had. His wine was amazing and definitely, recommend both of these small wineries. We then went to a large winery which was much different but still extremely good. Throughout the day Matteo always had great information to share and not only was very personable but was the best tour guide we could have had. 10/10 tour and I would definitely go again if we end up in Florence or the Tuscany region in the future!

chianti wine tour reviews

Here I would like to thanks Matteo being our honored wine specialist and tour guide for the winery in Chianti. It was so nice to have such an enjoyable and relax trip to Florence. We can explore 3 different wineries and meet the winemakers and owners, face to face in learning how's the winemaking process and how to taste the wine in a professional way. I would highly recommend my friends to join here. We haven't got any pressure and rush to visit at all. Wine should be sharing and enjoying with such a nice environment and the ones being with u! Best wishes and thanks once again!

chianti wine tour reviews

We were two couples who booked this tour during our stay in Florence and it turned out to be a top highlight of our two weeks spent in Europe. If you are able to request a guide we highly recommend Matteo, he was knowledgeable about the wine and area but also made us feel very comfortable since we are certainly not wine experts. Our three stops included two smaller organic vineyards and one larger scale vineyard. All stops were incredible with wonderfully gracious hosts at each. Lunch at the second stop was incredible. I would recommend this tour to anyone in the Florence area.

chianti wine tour reviews

What can we say - Pierpaolo our guide for the day exceeded all our expectations! His knowledge of the region and the wines produced in the area was outstanding. His English was magnificent as our Italian is terrible. The wineries we visited were beautiful and the staff at each location were very personable with again, great English (which helped with our experience). We would definitely come back and do another tour with them again, next time we’re in Florence. Our only regret is that we didn’t get a group photo with our guide Pierpaolo - our apologies!!

We met our tour guide Matteo, who gave us a brief rundown of the day's activities and the vineyards we would be visiting. During our ride, Matteo gave us further information about the region and the wines we would be tasting. His knowledge of the wine industry was excellent as was his English. We visited 3 very different vineyards - the first 2 being small family run estates and the 3rd one being one of the largest in Tuscany. All 3 were unique and presented some amazing wines. For us, the highlight of the tour was the Organic Winery - Tenuta Montiani where we stopped for lunch and enjoyed some amazing local food, all cooked by the owner of the Vineyard. He was a real character who loved to tell stories and kept us entertained. We highly recommend this small group tour - was the best tour of our 3-week Italian holiday.

The wine tour with Vittorio was, by far, the best experience of our time in Florence. He is a sommelier and extremely knowledgeable about not only the wine but also about the history of Florence and Tuscany. Our group of five had an incredible time at three different wineries – two small, family-run vineyards and one larger, more commercialized vineyard (Ruffino). All three were beautiful and the staff were friendly, informative, and welcoming. The lunch provided at the second winery was an intimate experience with the owner of the vineyard providing an incredible home-cooked traditional Italian meal and sitting with us, sharing stories and fellowship together. Vittorio spent the entire day with us, providing information on how to properly complete a wine tasting, information about the grapes of the area and the history of the production of the Chianti wine, as well as providing more information about the history of Tuscany. We could not recommend this tour more highly. It was absolutely the highlight of our trip. We already want to come back for another wine tour with Vittorio in Tuscany.

We decided last minute to do a wine tour and wow, I am so glad we did! I can't stop talking about it to our friends and family. Our first stop was to small winery where we sampled 5 wines, maybe more and I loved every sip. I learned so much about how to see, smell, and taste good wine. We learned about their wine making process and got some great pictures outside and with the wine barrels. We ended up purchasing a couple bottles for back home along with some amazing honey. Next we went to an even smaller, unique winery, had more wine, learned more about wine and had the best lunch in Italy. Not only did the host welcome us inside his home, have an amazing personality but his wine and food were out of this world too. I haven't had that good of a meal since. That was just an awesome experience. We bought even more wine and honey here. We just got our wine delivered and were so excited to share it with our friends and family and tell our stories all over again. Our last stop was at a large winery. Very cool to see the differences in how they make the wine. This Italy and Wine tour was hands down the best tour we did on our trip We loved all the winery's they picked out for the tour, and to boot, it didn't have a million tourist running around. Pierpaolo was super friendly and did a great job teaching us about wine.

This wine tour through Tuscany was absolutely incredible! Not only were the views and wines amazing, our guide Mateo was the best! He is so knowledgeable and taught us so much about the wine regions, how to taste wine and brought us to three very unique wineries! The best part was that it was such a small group, only 6 of us, so the tour was personal and intimate! We were able to meet the winemakers and even have lunch in one winemaker’s home. For my husband and I, this was the best part of our Italy trip, no doubt. Thanks, Mateo, for making this tour unforgettable!

I liked the fact that our driver was not only our guide but has attained Italy’s highest rated Sommelier level as well! It was also nice to be a group of only 6 of us. And of course, each of the three wineries we visited had their own special appeal and style of wine production. The luncheon with Winemaker Misha at Tenuta Montiani was epic!

Topping off a special wedding anniversary trip to Florence for my wife and me was a fabulous Chianti wine tour with Vittorio. A professional sommelier and native of Florence, he was an exceptional host and provided us with much wine and local knowledge. In Italy it’s all about pairing wine with food, and Vittorio taught us how to engage our senses - sight, smell, taste - to make good choices. For the wine geek, Vittorio described the details of DOCG, IGT, wine making and viticulture specific to the Sangiovese grape, Chianti Classico, and Super Tuscans. In this tour, we focused on the Chianti Classico sub-region of Chianti. We visited 3 wineries ranging from a small family operation to a large well-known winery. A delicious home-made lunch featuring traditional Tuscan fare was served at the family winery with wine poured by the winemaker. Small bites were provided at the other wineries during tastings to also illustrate the pairings (vegetarian bites can be requested). We purchased bottles during the tour and arranged with the last winery to ship all of them home. As a bonus some of the wineries also grew olives, and we learned about extra virgin olive oil production. Vittorio navigated the mini-van through the sometimes bumpy Chianti roads and narrow village streets with ease. With only four members and Vittorio, the tour group was small and intimate. We were paired with a delightful and engaging young couple from Australia. We highly recommend Vittorio's tours and will definitely book another with him the next time in Tuscany.

Booked two shared wine tours through Italy and Wine on our recent trip to Florence - The first covered Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the second, Chianti Classico and SuperTuscans. Without a doubt the best experience of our trip! Although we are knowledgeable wine enthusiasts, we had little previous exposure to these wines beyond the few that are exported to the US/California. Vittorio, who led our Chianti Classico tour and his colleague, Matteo, who led the Vino Nobile tour, are experienced sommeliers with deep knowledge and understanding of the wine and food culture of Tuscany. Each tour was a fabulous, informative, and immersive experience with a superlative mid-day meal at one of the three wineries visited. A true feast for the senses. Sensational value. Would definitely do it again. If planning on booking several tours through Italy and Wine, make sure to give yourself time in between each one to get the most from each tour experience. You won't be disappointed!

chianti wine tour reviews

Our wine tour with the charming Vittorio was truly the highlight of our honeymoon in Italy. We traveled to three vineyards in Tuscany and Vittorio taught us a number of things about the region between stops. At the first vineyard, Vittorio walked us through the proper technique for wine tasting. Now...I'm sure everyone has gone through this in other wine tours they've attended (as have we), however in this particular tour we were taught each of the required steps for sampling/tasting in so much detail which included a number of items we had never been taught to consider. Up until this tour I'm convinced we've never truly tasted wine properly. The other couple on our tour had also been on a number of wine tours in Napa Valley and had the same feedback. In the second vineyard we visited we had wonderful views of Tuscany and the most delicious (and filling) homemade lunch we could have asked for. The final vineyard we visited (Ruffino) was on a beautiful property and we were given a wonderful tour with a lot of history. Overall our experience on this day trip was spectacular and we were able to sample some of the most incredible wines in Italy. We highly recommend this day trip to anyone visiting Florence - it is completely worth the money. Thanks so much Vittorio for being such a wonderful host!

My husband and I were debating doing a wine tour and ended up booking this tour last minute and it turned out to be the best decision we made! This was the best wine tour we have ever been on and we have been on many in California. Vittorio is so passionate about wines and taught us so many interesting things about the Tuscany region. The wineries we toured were incredible and the lunch was absolutely delicious. This was the highlight of our trip and we can't wait to go back and visit. Don't think twice about booking this tour!

Now buckle up and get ready for some off-roading through ancient woodlands and rolling hills. Hop aboard ‘the Beast’ and take in the beautiful scenery, from the cypress trees to the rustic farms and churches, as we make our way to Rignana, a typical Tuscan restaurant and winery with stunning views. Amazing Vineyard Tour

by: Bronson K on Tripadvisor

Our tour guide, Alessandro, was amazing! We could not have asked for a better guide. The food, vineyards, wine, history, and hospitality are the things which stick out the most for me in this experience. Alessandro made us feel as if we were members of his family and went the extra mile in providing fantastic service. My father does not drink and he was so happy he attended the tour as there is so much to learn about besides the wine. I will definitely be recommending this tour to all friends, family, and everyone else for that matter!

Great tour and great wine

by: Joel S on Tripadvisor

Tour was amazing. As we drove to the Chianti region we learned about the pertinent history of the area and the wine. The truck was very comfortable and handled some of the less maintained roads well. All of the food and wine was great and the vineyards were beautiful. Lavi and Roberto were both great the whole day.

Tuscan Safari Wine Tour

by: Katie W on Tripadvisor

We did this tour while staying in Florence for our honeymoon trip. This is a MUST DO. we had Lovelia as our guide and Enrico as our driver. Lovelia (Lavi) is exceptional and we were in awe of the history we learned about the region (Atruscan history, wine and olive oil). So personable and easy to follow. The villas and restaurant are breathtaking.

Fun day! Misleading title/photos.

by: Kaitlyn M on Tripadvisor

Tour guide, food & wine were all great! Title and photos however are misleading - it is not a “safari” nor is the vehicle pictured what was utilized. It was just a standard motorcoach. While it didn’t change my enjoyment of the day, there are many other tours that would offer the same experience at a lesser cost.

This was wonderful tour. Alex was personable, full of wonderful information and very kind. I have a bit of an injured knee and he was there at every instance of stairs or small hikes to check on me. Every stop on the tour was a singular experience of beauty, information, and great wine with no sales or marketing pressure. It was one of the most relaxing days of my life and one I will never forget Highly, highly recommend..... Chalmer Wren

A Chianti Classico Wine Review

Mar 4, 2024 · 8 Comments

This post has been sponsored by Chianti Classico . The following message is intended for those 21+. All opinions expressed are my own. Please enjoy responsibly.

Nestled in the heart of Italy, Tuscany stands as one of the world's most esteemed wine regions. From the sun-kissed hillsides to the fertile valleys, Tuscany's landscape provides an ideal environment for cultivating grapes, with a unique combination of Mediterranean climate, limestone-rich soil, and cooling coastal influences from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Tuscan wine, however, is perhaps best known for the Sangiovese grape, and the beloved Chianti that this grape produces.

And that is exactly what we’re taking a look at today in the form of San Felice’s 2020 Chianti Classico. As always, we’ll start this feature off with a look at the region this wine hails from, before moving on to sampling the wine itself. After that, we’ll close things out with some pairing and serving suggestions.

Now, let’s get to it.

The Where – Tuscany (Chianti DOCG), Italy

Today’s bottle comes to us from Tuscany, which is arguably the most iconic wine region within Italian winemaking – which in turn makes it “One of the most iconic regions in ‘all’ of winemaking.”

In turn, the Chianti DOCG, (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, or Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin), is the single best-known Italian wine region within Tuscany, and not without good reason. Chianti, produced from Sangiovese grapes, is recognized for its assorted cherry aromas and flavors, along with pleasantly contrasting savory notes, rich acidity, and full tannins. The first Chianti wine zone dates back over three hundred years to 1716 courtesy of Grand Duke Cosimo Medici. Recognizably ‘modern’ Chianti, the ‘style’ or blending of Sangiovese that we all know and love today, dates back to the 1800s, courtesy of Barone Ricasoli of the Castello di Brolio winery.

Outside of the Chianti DOCG, Tuscany is divided across a whopping forty-one DOCs and 11 DOCGs, Italy’s regional classification system, which regulates how and where wines are made. Aside from production methods and geography, this classification system also sets rigid quality standards, including but not limited to standardized taste testing.

However, despite the literally dozens of specified production areas and methods into which Tuscany is divided, the bedrock of Tuscan winemaking is a single varietal – Sangiovese. Sangiovese so dominates the region that it is almost impossible to talk about Tuscan winemaking without giving mention to the grape that produces the dry red wines for which Tuscany is famous. Prized for its high acid, ‘pleasantly firm’ tannins, and balance, a quality wine based on Sangiovese will evoke images of ripe dark cherries and black stonefruit, perforated with stark herbal notes. Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and Brunello di Montalcino (all of which we’ve reviewed here on Living the Gourmet) are just a few of the world-renowned wines produced from Sangiovese.

chianti wine tour reviews

However, Sangiovese is assuredly ‘not’ the beginning and end of the story of Tuscan winemaking. For example, the 1970s saw the rise of ‘Super Tuscans,’ an unofficial term used to describe several high-quality Tuscan wines that were – for one reason or another – excluded from receiving DOC or DOCG status by breaking traditional Italian winemaking norms. Regardless of local labeling, a number of these wines achieved critical acclaim, as well as commercial success, and ended up becoming ‘cult wines’ that commanded high prices. Over the ensuing decades some of these ‘Super Tuscans’ were granted DOC or DOCG status – although it can be argued that such status detracted from their ‘cult’ mystique as ‘rogue labels.’ Aside from the controversial ‘Super Tuscans,’ other wines have also seen success across Tuscany, such as Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tight regulations and quality standards aside, climate is perhaps the foremost factor in Tuscany’s success. The region’s warm and temperate coastline is flanked by inland hillsides and mountains, which help temper the region’s searing summers, which in turn contributes to increased temperature variation. This temperature variation between the hills, mountains, and warm coastline helps balance the sugars and acidity of the region’s grapes. Sangiovese performs best when it receives maximum direct sunlight, and as such the hilly terrain of the region is almost tailormade for this grape, with the majority of the area’s vineyards being planted at elevations of between some five hundred and sixteen hundred feet. This higher elevation further increases temperature variance, which further increases the balance of sugar and acidity.

The Bottle – A Showcase

Today we’re reviewing a 2020 San Felice Chianti Classico.

Tasting and Aromatics – The Review

The San Felice Chianti Classico introduces itself with an elegant bouquet, featuring notes of juniper and fresh strawberries off the top of the glass, alongside hints of olive and tobacco leaf. Deeper into the glass, on the second whiff, ripe red berry notes come through, with hints of dried flowers and cherry. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with fresh acidity and integrated tannins, while the berry notes from the bouquet carry over pleasantly. Ending on a lingering finish, this was a very enjoyable wine from start to finish.

What to Eat – The Pairings

This is an excellent example of a Chianti Classico, and as such by-the-book, traditional Chianti pairings are the way to go. What does that mean? Here’s the crash course;

  • Red Sauces: Pasta with tomato-based sauces, such as spaghetti marinara or penne arrabbiata.
  • Red Meat: Grilled or roasted red meats, such as steak, lamb chops, and boar, are all delicious pairings with a Chianti Classic. Consider preparing these meats thoroughly herbed with plenty of garlic.
  • Charcuterie: Italian-style cured meats and aged cheeses, like prosciutto, salami, or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Simply put, you can never go wrong serving a Chianti alongside a lush antipasto board.
  • Tuscan Cuisine: This one should be obvious, but Tuscan cuisine pairs deliciously with Tuscan wine. That means dishes like bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine steak) or wild boar ragu.
  • Creative Pizzas: Don’t hate me for saying this, but a Margherita pizza would pair deliciously with this wine. For more traditional pizza pairings, opt for Neapolitan pizza, pizza with fresh mozzarella and basil.
  • Roasted Vegetables: Roasted vegetables, especially those with earthy flavors like mushrooms or eggplant, are delicious alongside this wine. That also means eggplant parm is a safe, and delicious, bet.
  • Bruschetta: Especially paired with fresh tomatoes, garlic, and basil. Extra points if you drizzle it with a balsamic glaze.
  • Risotto: Creamy risotto, with plenty of mozzarella, preferably layered with mushrooms or sausage would be delicious.
  • Hardy Fair: Think grilled sausages, meatballs, and hearty stews.
  • Dark chocolate desserts: Things like flourless chocolate cake or chocolate mousse, would pair deliciously with a Chianti Classico.

I had been saving a bottle of Chianti Classico for a special occasion, and I decided to open it on our anniversary. We toasted to our love and happiness, and savored the rich and complex flavors of the wine, complemented by a delicious cheese platter. We cuddled on the couch and watched our favorite movie, feeling cozy and content, and grateful for each other and the simple pleasures of life.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, reading this made me want to enjoy a really lovely bottle, paired with the right food!

Clemens: Wine descriptors, part two

Continuing our investigation of wine descriptors. Last week we noted wine shares the same molecules as familiar, pleasant tastes and smells. But what about all those weird descriptors?

Gus Clemens

• Barnyard/sheep butt:  Associated with pinot noir, particularly from Burgundy but also sometimes from elsewhere. Believe it or not, it is an earthy scent often associated with quality — and it goes away with decanting or swirling in your glass. It should not be confused with “barnyard” associated with brettanomyces (brett), a yeast that invades wineries and can spoil wine (more about that later). So, there is good barnyard/sheep butt and bad barnyard/sheep butt. You want wine to be simple and easy?

• Farmyard:  Associated with aged chianti. Kinder, gentler than “barnyard.” It describes earthy and vegetal undertones some wines develop. Like many such terms, used in admiration or deploration, depending upon the critic and the wine.

• Band-Aid:  Smell associated with tempranillo and pinotage, usually means there is bit of brett (brettanomyces) — a yeast usually considered a flaw, but also considered a plus by some when it only slightly influences the wine. Different folks, different strokes. It mostly is associated with red wines. In low concentrations, it adds a spicy, leathery note. In higher concentrations, it ruins the wine.

• Wet wool/damp straw:  Associated with chenin blanc. The aroma resembles lanolin, a fatty substance secreted by a sheep’s skin. The descriptor often occurs alongside mentions of honey, pears, lemon. Chenin blanc may be world’s most versatile grape — capable of almost any style. It is superb in the Loire Valley of France. Want upscale? Ask for “Vouvray,” chenin blanc’s greatest appellation. Swirl, inhale, wistfully comment on its whisper of wet wool wafting amid notes of wild honey and lemons.

• Cat pee:  Associated with sauvignon blanc, particularly from cooler climate makers in New Zealand and France-Sancere. It arises from natural compounds called pyrazines that give sauv blanc its grassy, herbaceous notes. When weak, sometimes called “lantana bush.” When stronger, “cat pee.” Again, a symbol of quality that will blow away with some air. So don’t meow. Say: “oui, oui, Sancere cat pee is for me.”
