Sun Mountain Tour Series Golf Bag Review
This is how it’s done: Stay ahead of the game with sun mountain ’s Tour Series golf bag. You’ll love its clean lines and its four minimalist color combinations. Mostly black, white or grey, the Tour series features just a hint of color to stand out from the rest without appearing flashy. This most versatile bag has enough room for all the clubs you will need to play the most complicated course you can imagine. Its massive 10” top with a 15-way divider system will keep all your clubs scratch free in individual full-length dividers and a dedicated putter compartment. The Tour Series features 2 molded handles at the top and a lift assist strap at the bottom for easy maneuvering.
Its single carry strap has quick release buckles for easy removal or attaching should you decide to carry the bag out of the cart to approach your shot. As with most of sun mountain ’s golf bags, the Tour Series comes complete with a coordinating rain hood to guard against inclement weather. Ten pockets festoon this large bag, including coveted shoe pockets, two velour lined pouches, and three full length clothing storage pockets. You won’t miss a thing since sun mountain has thought of everything you‘ll need while on the course. The sleek look and understated lines of the Tour Series bag will make you the envy of your favorite course or any course you play. Sun Mountain ClubGlider Tour Series
The Sun Mountain ClubGlider Tour Series is a terrific golf travel bag, slotting in as the second largest offering in the ClubGlider line of four-wheelers (behind the cavernous ClubGlider Pro ). The ClubGlider Tour Series is designed to accommodate either cart bags, including the new Sun Mountain Tour Series cart bag, or stand bags. We highly recommend four-wheel golf travel bags with pivoting caster wheels – once you try one, you won’t want to go back to a two-wheeler – and if the price tag doesn’t make you flinch, the ClubGlider Tour Series is one of the best options in the category.
The ClubGlider Tour Series operates in the same way as the favorably reviewed ClubGlider Meridian – as with the Meridian, the Tour Series features retractable legs that extend from a molded tray in one motion. For the sake of expedience, we suggest reading our ClubGlider Meridian review , before coming back here, where we identify the primary distinctions between the two bags. Note that we reviewed the 2012 version of the ClubGlider Meridian , so there may be slight differences between the 2012 Meridian and the one that Sun Mountain currently offers.
We found the principal differences between the ClubGlider Tour Series and the 2012 ClubGlider Meridian to be:
- At 13.5 pounds (as tested), the Tour Series weighs about 0.5 pounds more than the current generation Meridian (which seems to have trimmed down almost 2 pounds from the 2012 Meridian we tested). Weight is an important factor in the choice of a travel bag, as your friendly airline is now aggressively patrolling for bags that exceed the weight limit for oversize bags. If your fully loaded bag exceeds the designated weight limit (50 lbs. on most airlines), the airline will be more than happy to charge you an “overweight bag” fee ($100 on United, Delta or American) EACH WAY (subject to waiver for folks who have elite frequent flier status on that airline). The Tour Series lands right in the middle among travel bags we’ve tested, nowhere near as light as the 8.5 lb. Bag Boy T-2000 but not as portly as the 17 lb. OGIO Mammoth either.
- The shape of the Tour Series is more rounded than the 2012 Meridian , which had squarer edges, but the bag is a couple of inches taller – they seem to be pretty similar in terms of interior storage capacity. We tested the Tour Series both with a traditional stand bag and with the Clicgear B3 cart bag. With the traditional stand bag there was plenty of capacity for additional clothing and gear – it was the only bag needed for a 4-day trip to a golf resort , while with the larger cart bag, storage space was limited (and an additional bag would likely have been necessary to get everything there for the trip). The Tour Series has internal dimensions of 52″ x 14″ x 14″.
- The Tour Series utilizes vinyl fabric, while the Meridian uses a 1200 denier polyester fabric. Vinyl fabrics are waterproof and generally more weather resistant than polyester fabrics. There’s a bit more of a gloss/slickness to the fabric, which may or may not appeal to your aesthetic sense.
- While both bags have two external pockets, the Tour Series pockets are only accessible from the outside, which seems to be a step in the wrong direction from the convenience afforded by the prior generation Meridian (with pockets accessible from either the inside or outside). The pockets sit relatively flush and extend primarily to the interior of the case when filled, so while they may help from an organizational sense, there isn’t any real gain in storage space by packing items here.
- The Tour Series now only has a single internal strap at the middle with which to secure your bag. The 2012 Meridian had two straps – one at the top and another toward the bottom. The Tour Series adds, however, external straps at the middle and toward the bottom that cinch the bag tighter. We didn’t observe a demonstrable difference in the stability or balance of the bag either way.
- The Tour Series is only available in either black or black/white. The 2012 ClubGlider Meridian was available in four different color options (the current Meridian only has three options – black, black/red and black/royal blue).
- Unlike either the 2012 Meridian or the current generation Meridian, the Tour Series comes with a TSA-approved combination padlock.
- The Tour Series retails for $319.99, down from the 2012 Meridian’s $339, but more than the current Meridian’s $289.99. Based on current MSRPs, this places it as the most expensive golf travel bag we have reviewed.

If you've found your way to AmateurGolf.com, you're our kind of golfer. You don't cancel a round 24 hours prior because the weather person on TV says it will be a huge "weather event" or an "atmospheric river." You've been around long enough to know that most days are playable, and the worst that can happen if you show up early for your tee time and the course actually IS closed is that you have a relaxing breakfast and head home.
So you get the need for a good rain suit. But you may not have considered protecting your clubs from the worst that Mother Nature can offer. I hadn't thought much about how waterproof my golf bag was either until planning a month-long sabbatical in Scotland. In 30 days traversing the Home of Golf (and I don't just mean St. Andrews, I mean the whole country), I knew I would get poured on, possibly many times. So, I decided it was finally time to try Sun Mountain's category-defining H2NO golf bag.
First released in 2007 after Sun Mountain's founders played "one too many tournaments in the rain," the latest version, the H2NO Litespeed, weighs just 5 pounds and has been reimagined to include the features you demand in a carry bag.
The zippers, by the way, are one of the standout features of this bag. Each zipper is enclosed with waterproof lining, ensuring rain doesn’t sneak into the pockets. This was particularly useful in Scotland, where the rain can seem relentless. Whether I was out playing in intermittent showers or full-on downpours, my gear remained completely dry inside the H2NO. There’s peace of mind in knowing that my gloves, rangefinder, and scorecard weren’t turning into a soggy mess. A Practical and Essential Top Cover Most golfers, myself included, tend to discard the top covers that come with golf bags. But with the H2NO, you’ll want to hang onto it. The top cover is an essential piece of the waterproofing puzzle. When the rain hits and starts pouring down the bag, the cover keeps your clubs dry and prevents water from seeping in. On my rounds in Scotland, I noticed just how vital that top cover was. Even when the rain stopped, I didn’t have to wait for my bag and clubs to dry out, and that alone made the experience much more enjoyable. When you're playing in places like Scotland or Bandon Dunes (or any other wet weather destination), this feature becomes more than just a nice-to-have—it’s a game-changer.
Summary of Features - Weighs less than 5 pounds. - Six pockets include a hydration sleeve, full-length apparel pocket and a two-compartment, velour-lined valuables pocket - X-Strap System is easy to get on and off and works well as a single strap for short carries. - The shoulder straps are sculpted and have carry-assist grab loops for a more comfortable carry. - Matching rainhood included
Final Thoughts: Bring One Along The Sun Mountain H2NO Litespeed Stand golf bag exceeded all my expectations. It’s a must-have for anyone playing in rainy conditions, whether it’s Scotland, Bandon, or even your local course after an unexpected downpour. Its waterproof material, expertly designed zippers, and extremely functional and well-thought-out top cover keep your gear safe, dry, and ready to use. At just 5 pounds, the latest model is equally suitable for carrying or using with a trolley, as I did all month in Scotland. Rain will always be part of the game, but with the H2NO, it doesn’t have to ruin your round. If you’re planning a trip to a wet-weather golf destination or just want to be prepared for the rainy days where you live, this bag should be at the top of your list.

I visited Astrakhan, the Russian MELTING POT of religions and ETHNICITIES (PHOTOS)
When we entered the ATR-72 twin engine turboprop aircraft for our evening flight from Sochi to Astrakhan, my friend Olga and I were a bit surprised to see the ethnic mix of passengers on board. Nordic, Southern European, Caucasian, Central Asian, West Asian and “typical Russian” features were all visible on the two-hour flight to the city by the Volga. As we were to find out over the next three days, Astrakhan, which has a population of 526,000, is home to members of 104 of Russia’s 120 ethnicities.
Ajay and his friend Olga on a cold morning
The small airport is just a 15-minute drive away from the city center and we were lucky to find an apartment in a well maintained Stalin-era building literally across the street from the Astrakhan kremlin.
Walk around the city at night
Our first task was to try out the much-hyped Caspian cuisine of the city. Although it was only 9:30 pm on a Friday, the beautifully landscaped area that is near Lenin Square and borders the Kremlin was almost empty. Tastefully lit, the area had a distinct Mediterranean feel. With a bearable cold breeze and crystal clear air, I found the surroundings to be romantic, but my travel partner said she had an eerie feeling, since we hadn’t seen any others in the street.
As we walked towards the riverside, we found our first Caspian-themed restaurant. Olga managed to calm down over a bottle of white wine and some local delicacies, such as sturgeon from the Volga Delta and ukha , which many restaurants label as the Tsar’s fish soup in their English menus.
Astrakhan at night
The main activity at night in Astrakhan revolves around the streets leading to the Volga riverfront. This is where the youth of the city go clubbing or bar hopping. There were signs of nightlife in this stretch of the city, but we had seen far bigger crowds in much smaller Russian cities. Locals later told us that they took the pandemic more seriously than their counterparts in other parts of the country and, hence, there were so few people on the streets.
Feel the diversity on display at the Kremlin
On my first morning in the city, I set off on an exploratory run and was absolutely impressed with the city center. The square that was empty the previous night was a hub of exercise and sporting activity. Under clear blue skies and warm sun, I saw well-looked after flower beds and trees that had leaves of every fall color. The season of colors had come and gone from the northern parts of Russia in a hurry in 2021, but Astrakhan was still in mid-fall mode in November.
Church in the Astrakhan kremlin
Later that morning, we decided to explore the impressive white Kremlin that towers over the city center. Standing on the Zayachy Hill, this massive fortress was originally built in the late 16th century and has been modified a few times since. Entry to the Kremlin, which opens at 7 am, is free and there are stalls where you can buy local handicrafts. I couldn’t resist buying a handcrafted wooden fridge magnet with an engraved image of this ancient fortress.
The Kremlin is a great place to just roam around or sit on a bench and enjoy the great historical ambience, like many locals do, but we wanted to know more about this fascinating and well-preserved monument. So, we took a guided tour of the complex - in a golf cart! The modern-day Astrakhan Region was contested between various groups and empires until the middle of the 16th century, when it became a part of the southward-expanding Russian Empire. A knowledgeable guide shared many historical facts about the Kremlin and the city with us.
After our tour, we were in for an unexpected audio visual treat. As the sun fought the grey fall clouds and warmed up the temperature to 18°C and the bells tolled from the Assumption Cathedral, a group of teenagers in various ethnic costumes came to the area near the church. Over the next 20 minutes, the colorful group performed a series of dances that reflected the cultures of various ethnic groups who call Astrakhan home.
Astrakhan's Assumption Cathedral
We first saw a Russian folk dance, followed by a Tatar dance and then a performance of the indigenous peoples who inhabit Astrakhan Region. We were lucky to be in the Kremlin on the day the city was marking Russian National Unity Day .
This ethnic diversity can be seen everywhere in Astrakhan, but nowhere it is more visible than in restaurants and bars, where you see groups of people from different backgrounds socialising and making merry.
Ajay at the Astrakhan kremlin
Astrakhan is also known for its religious diversity. We went to two recently-renovated mosques that are just outside the historic city center. Non-Muslims are allowed to visit at non-prayer times. There seemed to be a strong Persian influence in the interior of these mosques, which is not surprising, given the fact that Iran is just across the Caspian Sea. The city also has an Iranian consulate and a Russian-Iranian banking joint venture. Some of the stores in the city sell imported Iranian candy.
During our three-day stay in the city, we had a chance to get acquainted with people from Dagestan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. For those from other Caspian states, Astrakhan is seen as a logical entry point to Russia. In fact, several students from former Soviet countries study in the city.
Enjoy the unique architecture
The most interesting feature of Astrakhan is that no two streets in the historic center seem to resemble each other. A street full of early 1900s brownish-red brick structures is cut in half by a thoroughfare that has buildings that are a mix of Art Nouveau, Renaissance and Classicist architecture! Similarly, a walk by the outer walls of the 16th century Kremlin offers views of 19th century buildings that seem to have been transplanted from St. Petersburg.
Tastefully restored building in Astrakhan
Long-term residents say many of the heritage structures in the city were in a state of disrepair, until a decade ago, when Russian President Vladimir Putin took a personal interest in reviving the city, given its strategic location close to the Caspian Sea.
The victory of the Soviet Union in the Battle of Stalingrad and the resulting halt of German troops advances into southern Russia helped save the older buildings of Astrakhan during World War II. The radius around the Kremlin and riverfront are European in character, but once you cross the canal, a totally different side of the city opens up. These areas have ethnic Persian and Tatar localities, locally known as ‘sloboda’. One gets a feeling of crossing over into an altogether different century when strolling past these areas with their wooden cottages and cosy courtyards.
While there is a strong sense of community here, the area is lower middle class and, unfortunately, did not seem to have any ethnic Tatar or Persian-style cafes. We were told that the best place to sample this kind of food was the Tatar Bazar, which we could not visit. Locals in these ethnic enclaves apparently preferred to either cook at home or eat at food courts in shopping malls.
A wooden house outside the center (L); One of Astrakhan's older churches
The classical Russian neighbourhoods in Astrakhan have a wide array of dining options, including an elegant restaurant named ‘Onegin’ (named after Alexander Pushkin’s famous novel in verse ‘Eugene Onegin’), which has 19th century style interiors, chandeliers, paintings of the greats of Russian literature and plays the music of Russian composers Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. Plenty of other restaurants are themed around the Caspian Sea.
Spend an evening by the Volga
It goes without saying that the best place to spend an evening in the city is the riverside promenade. Runners, bicyclists, families, university students and pensioners all converge on this stretch in the early evening, as another day heads off into the night.
The small islands that are visible from the promenade are home to a variety of birds that rush to find shelter in the trees before nightfall. As the river runs south towards the Caspian, nature is absolutely breathtaking. Visitors to Astrakhan in the warmer months often head to the Volga Delta, which is a biodiversity hotspot and home to various species of flora and fauna.
We made it a point to catch the sunset by the Volga twice during our brief visit. Few experiences in Russia compare with seeing the red sun set behind the country’s most iconic river. The ensuing twilight paints the skies of Astrakhan with a unique shade of crimson.
Astrakhan with Olga
Standing by the riverfront on my last evening in the city, my gaze went to the left, where some 100 kilometers south the great Volga empties into the Caspian Sea. This area has always been a major transit point connecting north and south, east and west. For several hundred years, it was the intersection of the east-west trade route north of the Caspian Sea and the north-south trade route down the Volga to Persia. I couldn’t help but think how the city had the potential to become a major business, logistics and tourism hub, if Russia, India, Iran and the Caspian littoral countries put a fresh impetus on developing the International North-South Corridor.
Astrakhan, as it is, is still a special place where several cultures meet and blend. As a melting pot of religions and ethnicities, no city in Russia (outside of Moscow) represents the sheer diversity of this colossally large country as well as Astrakhan. The city’s communal harmony and amity set an example for many other parts of the world that are struggling to deal with the close interaction of various ethnic groups.

“Easy to use, love the color, protects the clubs amazingly well! A breeze in airports!"
“This is by far the best travel bag on the market. It makes the “chore” of lugging clubs easy. We have traveled around the world playing golf and these bags hold up to all the abuse that the baggage handlers dish out. They both still look brand new after 4 years of hard travel. Just one finger and it moves with you.”

History of Astrakhan
Foundation of astrakhan.
Astrakhan, the oldest city of the Lower Volga region, is included in the list of Russian cities recognized as historically valuable. From ancient times, trade routes of Persians and Arabs passed through this territory.
For the first time Astrakhan was mentioned by historians, scientists, travelers in the 13th century. The town was part of the Golden Horde. It was located about 12 km north of present Astrakhan on the right bank of the Volga River. The town was known by such names as Astarkhan, Ashtarkhan, Hajji Tarkhan.
Hajji Tarkhan played an important role in trade between Asia and Europe. Trade caravans with silk, spices, and other goods passed through the town. In 1395, Astrakhan was captured by the army of Tamerlane and plundered.
It was rebuilt with the formation of the Astrakhan Khanate in 1459. In the first half of the 16th century, Astrakhan, due to its favorable geographical position, began to attract the attention of the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and the Nogai Horde. The Grand Duchy of Moscow was also interested in establishing control over this region.
In 1556, after several campaigns of Russian troops sent by Ivan the Terrible, the Astrakhan Khanate was liquidated, its territory became part of the Russian state. In 1558, a Russian wooden fortress was laid on the left bank of the Volga River.
More historical facts…
Astrakhan - the main Asian gate of Russia
For the Moscow Kingdom, Astrakhan became not only a powerful military outpost in the southeast, but also its main trading gate to Asia. In 1582, stone walls with 8 large and small towers were built. The town grew quickly - the remoteness of this region and the need for labor attracted a lot of Russian settlers.
The Astrakhan Kremlin was built at the beginning of the 17th century. Both cathedrals located on its territory were constructed by architects from Yaroslavl in the traditional style of Russian church architecture in 1700-1710.
In the middle of the 17th century, Astrakhan was one of the border fortresses of the Russian state guarding the mouth of the Volga. Since 1668, Indian merchants had a permanent residence in the town and various benefits as people useful in the development of trade. The plague epidemic of 1692 claimed the lives of more than 10 thousand people out of 16 thousand inhabitants of Astrakhan.
For almost three centuries, Astrakhan was the main administrative center through which trade and political relations of Russia with the countries of the East, Transcaucasia, and the North Caucasus were carried out.
In the 17th-18th centuries, standing at the crossroads of caravan and waterways, Astrakhan turned from a small fortress in the south of Russia into a large trading town. The Volga River became the country’s most important transport artery.
Intensive Russian colonization of the Astrakhan region began in the 18th century. In 1717, by the decree of Peter I, the Astrakhan province was formed with almost the same borders as the present Volga Federal District. Astrakhan received the status of a provincial town.
In the first decades of the 18th century, a strong navy, admiralty, shipyards, and port were created in Astrakhan. After the Russo-Persian War of 1722-1723 (the Persian campaign of Peter the Great), the northwestern provinces of Persia (Gilyana, Mazandaran, Astrakhbad) were annexed to the Russian Empire, which had a huge impact on the development of the economy of the Astrakhan province.
Astrakhan in the 19th-20th centuries
In 1811, the population of Astrakhan was about 37,800 people. In the 1860s, in connection with the development of oil fields in Baku, the Astrakhan port became one of the largest in Russia. In 1873, the world’s first oil tanker sailed on the Caspian Sea. It was built by the Astrakhan shipowners, the Artemyev brothers, who poured oil for transportation directly into the hold of their sailing ship “Alexander”.
This technical solution was used by the Swedish industrialists, the Nobel brothers, who had their factories in Astrakhan and were engaged in oil development in the Caspian. In 1875, they built the world’s first steam oil tanker. In 1885, there were 62 factories in Astrakhan and its environs. Among urban industries, fishing and horticulture (especially viticulture) stood out.
In 1897, according to the census, 112,880 people lived in Astrakhan: Russians - 86,563 people, Tatars - 15,355, Armenians - 4,038, Jews - 2,115, Germans - 1,573.
From 1920 to 1928, Astrakhan was the capital of Kalmyk Autonomous Oblast. Until 1934, it was part of the Lower Volga Region, from 1934 - the Stalingrad Region. In 1939, the population of the city was 253,595 people. In 1943, Astrakhan became the center of Astrakhan Oblast.
In the 1950-1960s, the city was reconstructed. A new master plan for development and reconstruction was approved, according to which new parks were laid out, squares were formed, the Volga embankment was reconstructed, and the Astrakhan Kremlin was restored, new residential neighborhoods were built. At the end of the 1980s, the population of Astrakhan exceeded half a million.
Today, Astrakhan remains an important transit trade center and a major transport hub at the junction of Asia and Europe.

Southern Russian city near the Caspian Sea.
Astrakhan is a major city in southern European Russia and the administrative center of Astrakhan Oblast. The city lies on two banks of the Volga River, close to where it discharges into the Caspian Sea at an altitude of 28 metres below sea level.
Astrakhan is Russia’s face on that multinational body of water. The city reflects much of the region’s cultural and religious diversity. There are large communities of Kazakhs and Azeris, as well as Islamic Tatars. While many visitors use Astrakhan mainly as a jumping-off point for the Volga Delta, the city merits a day or two of exploration in its own right.
According to Lonely Planet, 'there’s a long, handsome riverfront that’s ideal for evening strolls as the sun sets across the river. The striking white kremlin, a symbol of Russian dominance since the 16th century, holds two beautiful churches and several museums. Across the canal, north of the kremlin, the stone mansions and churches of the European and Christian centre give way to Tatar and Persian sloboda (suburbs) with their wooden cottages, mosques and quaint courtyards, where garlands of drying vobla fish flutter in the breeze."
