Aaron Watson isn’t interested in what someone else thinks he should do. But instead of getting lonely as he sidesteps expectations, he’s gaining followers––hundreds of thousands of them. Delivered with a warm smile and fueled by a wild spirit, Watson’s rebellion echoes the land that helped make him. Watson remains strikingly similar to the people that still dot his native West Texas. They’re a rugged people, proud of home but humble and hardworking, the first to help a neighbor but also fiercely independent. And Watson is unquestionably one of them. Throughout his 17-year career that spans a dozen albums and more than 2,500 shows throughout the U.S. and Europe, 39-year-old Watson has stubbornly and sincerely identified with the everyman––even as he’s proven to be the exception to the rule. The latest evidence of Watson’s homespun singularity is Vaquero, an ambitious 16-song set of character-driven storytelling, level-headed cultural commentary, and love songs for grownups that promise to further solidify his status as one of today’s finest torch-bearers of real country music. Vaquero is the follow-up to 2015’s The Underdog, an acclaimed collection that also made history. Watson was sitting at his kitchen table as his wife Kim scrambled eggs when he got the call: The Underdog had debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. It was the first time an independent, male country artist had ever outsold majors to premiere at the top spot. “We started jumping around and squealing like kids,” he says. “It was a beautiful moment because I got to share it with the girl who believed in me when I was broke and playing some pawnshop guitar. It is something I’ll never forget.” That momentous instant also arrived with a built-in challenge. “Once we dried the tears of joy, it hit me,” Watson says. “I had my work cut out for me for my next album.” Determined, Watson committed to waking up every morning before the sun rose to write songs on that same old pawnshop guitar he scored 20 years ago. “I bet you I couldn’t get $50 for that guitar,” he says. “But it means the world to me.” He penned songs in the back of a bus on the highway, too, as the band spent the last two years playing more than 35 states and six countries. The result is Vaquero, a bold album that confidently draws from Texas’ storied musical melting pot: dancehall shuffles, dustbowl narratives, Tejano, and more fill the record. In writing the new album, Watson felt especially drawn to the idea of the vaquero, the original Spanish horseman that set the foundation for the North American cowboy, a solitary figure with a legendary work ethic. Watson is a modern-day vaquero––he just gets up at 5 a.m. to wrangle songs instead of cattle. And while he won’t deny the pressure he felt following his last album’s success, outside barometers can’t compel him to change who he is or what he writes. Watson is Watson, chart-topping record or not. One listen and it’s easy to understand why. Album opener “Texas Lullaby” pays lilting homage both to home and to the bravery of the young heroes fighting wars. Deep connections to place and family course throughout the record. Sing-along “These Old Boots Have Roots” celebrates new love by offering promises grounded in the honor and grace of past generations. A fiddle accents Watson’s lines playfully then escalates to a hopeful roar. Romance is a central theme of the album, but Watson isn’t interested in adding to the steady stream of hook-up anthems coming out of Music Row. Watson’s love songs are celebrations of monogamy and the bonds that only time, mutual respect, and persistence can build. The swinging, fiddle-soaked “Take You Home Tonight” anticipates a steamy night in, while “Run Wild Horses” is a passionate ode to lovemaking featuring a standout vocal performance from Watson, whose laid-back croon lets loose and soars. Infectious first single “Outta Style” and shuffling “Be My Girl Tonight” both praise staying power and explore how to protect it. Watson revels in another kind of love on the album closer, “Diamonds & Daughters.” Two years ago, his then four-year-old daughter asked him to write her a song for his next record. “I thought it sure would be special if I could write her a song right now that we could dance to at her wedding someday,” he says. That’s exactly what he did. A tender look at the past, present, and future, the song will undoubtedly touch every parent and daughter who hears it. The title track is an accordion-fueled joy, buoyed by Watson’s delivery of life lessons courtesy of an old vaquero sitting alone at a bar. “Mariano’s Dream” and “Clear Isabel” are companion pieces, placed back-to-back to stunning cinematic effect. Plaintive instrumental “Mariano’s Dream” kicks off the experience, haunting and sad as an acoustic guitar carries listeners through a lush Tex-Mex soundscape. The song then segues into “Clear Isabel,” and listeners soon discover the Mariano named in the previous track is father to Isabel. A story of sacrifice and heartbreak, “Clear Isabel” imbues the souls who choose to cross a river in search of safety with the dignity and beauty they deserve. Refusing to worry about charts or current trends, Watson hopes the main thing Vaquero accomplishes is bringing his growing legion of fans joy. And no matter what happens next, he is anchored and ready.

We saw this show in Beaumont, TX and it was really good. Aaron had Kevin Fowler with him and the only thing that could've made it better for this Panhandle Poor Girl is if they could've enticed Trent Willmon to perform with them for an Panhandle triple shot! The venue was perfect. Not crowded at all and not an overdone "showy" type of show. Down home, genuine feel and not over-hyped. Exactly what you'd expect from those 2 performers.
Although we enjoyed the concert as a whole we did get discouraged by the amount of talking Aaron did during his set. It was nice hearing from the artist and getting a personal experience but we really wanted to hear more music. He said he'd sing parts of some songs but those were the songs we wanted to hear in their entirety lol. We were totally confused when he said he didn't want to sing Getaway Truck.....why?? It's a great song! It was cute the way Aaron brought a small girl on stage for her birthday and played for her but again we really wanted more music.
Overall it was a fun night out for my daughter-in-law and myself and worth the 1.5 hr drive to Beaumont. They had played in Houston BUT it was outdoor, ground seating. It's toooooo hot for that + I'm disabled so ground seating was out. We'd definitely see Aaron again when he's back in the area & Kevin Fowler too. Jon Stack was the opener and he was a good singer; appropriate too as he's real country - not what they're passing off as country these days. We'd actually never heard of him. Turns out he has albums. Now we know lol.

Aaron Watson is a singer-songwriter who hails from Amarillo Texas and attended Abilene Christian University, where he start playing the guitar. He played a number of gigs around Texas before releasing his debut album entitled “A Texas Café”. In the last fifteen years he has released upwards of about ten studio albums, his most recent one that he is touring with, called “Real Good Time” made it to number 9 in the US Country Charts. He opens with the song “Barbed Wire Halo” which opens with a violin played as a fiddle playing an exert similar to the song “Amazing Grace”. He joins in on his Gibson Hummingbird guitar. It is almost as though this song samples the original song. The audience is singing along from the start to the finish with their hands high up in the air. One of the songs that goes down the best is a song called “July in Cheyenne” which has everyone in this place dancing and jumping around, whilst the Texan crooner provides a worthy soundtrack.
I had a good time Aaron Watson concert. I wasn't able to sit down there close to him to where I could see him real well I was sitting up in the balcony. But he did put on a good show. I was impressed. I've been following. Aaron Watson for almost 2 years I would have loved to have met him in person. I meet and greet but I wasn't able to. Are even sitting the VIP down on the floor area But all in all it was good. I would like to see me and sometimes to be able to meet him. And get a autograph for a shirt signed or something like that. Maybe someday I will.

Aaron Watson with Zane Williams as the opening act... Aaron Watson has been on my list of people to see live for years now... Me and a few friends drove about 3 hours to see him at Joe's live Rosemont. This hands down was the best concert I have ever been... and I have been to many concerts! Aaron Watson put on a great show. He really cares about his fans. He played for 2 & 1/2 hours straight. He was taking pictures with the fans and even took 3 little girls on stage to dance and play the fiddle. I'll definitely go see him again when he returns to El Paso TX.
Aaron Watson has been around for about 10 years now. I just heard of him about a month before the concert. This guy is really good and sings from the heart. Real country music not new country/rap. You'll be amazed at his music. I will see him again first chance I get.

At Home With Aaron Watson
Aaron watson, the tried-and-true texas country crooner, chats about both the work and play areas of his family’s spread near buffalo gap..
H e’s talented, smart, charismatic, and devoted to traditional country songwriting. Texas troubadour Aaron Watson remains one of the bright spots in music thanks to those traits, and his latest record, last year’s American Soul , runs the emotional gamut from heartrending personal stories to celebratory cowboy anthems.
“It feels like a West Texas resort out in the middle of the country,” Watson says. “It’s so peaceful out there and the sunrises and sunsets are amazing.
“Being out so far out of town, there’s a million stars in the sky. It’s relaxing to sit out around the fire pit and have some music going and hang out.”
Here’s more from Watson on the areas in his home where he plays — and works.
Cowboys & Indians : How are your outdoor areas designed and what were some key elements you wanted in them? Aaron Watson: When we moved into the house, there was already the pool and fire pit. Over the years, we have made a few changes and really tailored it into something that is perfect for our family. We have a big horseshoe couch and a TV that adds to the outdoor living area. I just added pergolas around the pool. The evenings really are peaceful and it’s fun to go out there and watch a movie with the family.
Living out in the country, we love having our own little getaway in the backyard. It is very important for me. With as much time as I spend on the road, it’s nice to feel like I can have a retreat in my backyard.
C&I : Now tell me about your office — what did you envision, and what did you know you had to have? Watson: The backyard is a different story; that’s something I have complete control over. The office is in the house, and I have to play by [my wife] Kim’s rules. The office is open to the rest of the house, so it had to fit the vibe she has for it. If I’m not writing songs out on the back porch, I’m writing in the office. It was important for me to be surrounded by my guitars and musical things and memories without messing up her feng shui.
C&I : What kind of décor is there and how does it inspire you to keep working on your music, shows, and other projects ? Watson: I have some framed show prints from playing the Grand Ole Opry and the Ryman. I also have an autographed Chris LeDoux 8x10, an old Lone Star neon sign, and my first guitar. I have things there that remind me how far I’ve come and how much further I want to go.
C&I : What advice would you give to anyone who is setting up their own office, no matter how big or small? Watson: Your office needs to be some place where you can be productive and comfortable working. I think creating an environment where you can get the job done is the key.

Aaron Watson hits Texas TV and tour for “Live at the World’s Biggest Rodeo Show” album release
Aaron Watson’s Live at the World’s Biggest Rodeo Show, the “pioneering independent’s” ( Cowboys & Indians ) 14 th album and his first live album in nearly a decade, is now available. Friday’s release marks the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey, the Category 4 storm that caused $125 billion in damage, impacting 13 million people in 41 Texas counties. $1.41 from each album sold will benefit the Rebuild Texas Fund , in recognition of the widespread devastation across Watson’s beloved home state. The project, which “captures Watson in full-fledged rockstar mode,” ( Rolling Stone Country ) was recorded live in front of 65,000 fans on opening night of the 2017 Rodeo Houston.
The collection contains 13 songs from Aaron’s 18-year career and includes the emotional acoustic bonus track, “Higher Ground.” The stirring song, written by Watson as Hurricane Harvey was devastating his home state of Texas, was named one of the week’s 10 Best Songs by Rolling Stone Country , declaring it “swoons and swells on the back of a small string section, with Watson delivering lines like ‘I pray you will always be strong’ as though they were Sunday-morning benedictions.”

On release date, the native Texan, visited radio, appeared live on Houston’s ABC (KTRK) and NBC (KPRC) midday TV shows, and performed for a capacity crowd at the Smart Financial Centre (Sugar Land). The following day he headed to Wal-Mart in Waco, TX to meet and greet friends, family, and fans and sign copies of the new album for over three hours. That evening, Watson took his show over to the Margarita & Salsa Festival, co-headlining the Waco event in front of 6,000 fans bearing the triple digit heat to see their favorite Lone Star Cowboy.
Watson’s new single from Vaquero , “ Run Wild Horses ,” is currently Top 40 and climbing on the Mediabase national radio charts. The video for the self-penned homage to his wife “turns the heat way up” (Taste of Country), premiered with CMT Music last month.
Aaron Watson wrapped 2017 with a Top 10 on the national radio charts with his self-penned “Outta Style.” At 50 weeks, the hit single shattered a Billboard record, marking the longest trek to the coveted spot in the history of their Country Airplay Chart. The Texas troubadour ended his banner year with his album Vaquero earning one of the 10 biggest album debuts of the year in country music and a number of “Best Album of 2017” nods, including Whiskey Riff and the No. 1 spot on Taste of Country’s year end list, proclaiming the project “a rich collection of cowboy poetry.”

2024 NFL Draft: International growth, quarterback decisions and other lessons learned
The nfl will welcome six first-round quarterbacks for the 2024 season.
The 2024 NFL Draft directly taught us how teams view certain positions and indirectly taught us why one team could be in trouble. Here are some of the lessons learned over the course of three days in Detroit:
Global expansion continues
The league grows more widespread on an annual basis. Germany, England and Brazil will host regular season contests in the upcoming season. Mexico had previously hosted an International Series game. For the first time in NFL history, reality contestant Ozo Chukwu announced a draft pick from Nigeria. There are more and more international academies preparing players for a professional future in the NFL. Fans should expect first-time International Series city hosts in the coming years.
Unconventional ways of finding NFL players
The last subcategory is certainly aiding in the next one. In addition to the traditional scouting of collegiate athletes, the NFL found talent in a variety of other ways: one from the Canadian Football League (CFL), two from Canadian universities and one from the International Pathway Program. The institution and expansion of the practice squad allows teams to carry players that may require additional development.
Denver's campaign to be the smartest in the room
Atlanta taking Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. came as a surprise, but it prepared everyone for the possibility that Oregon's Bo Nix could go sooner than expected. Denver needed a quarterback but few considered Nix to be worthy of the No. 12 overall selection. Upon the announcement of the pick, the organization immediately set course on controlling the public narrative. A report from ESPN's Adam Schefter claimed that head coach Sean Payton feels as confident in Nix as he did in Patrick Mahomes. Payton then used his press conference to pat himself on the back for what he considered baiting Minnesota into trading up for Michigan's J.J. McCarthy.
The reality is that NFL production is all that matters and Nix has an opportunity to prove himself just like every other draft pick. If he wins, then the franchise will have the last laugh. However, it is a red flag when the only supporters of the decision are found within your own building.
The reasoning for Atlanta's selection of Penix actually made a lot of sense. They do not anticipate picking this high in the coming years and wanted to take their swing on a quarterback of the future. My issue, specifically, is with the execution. Cousins' contract will impact decision-making for at least two and probably three years. Penix will turn 24-years-old in a little over a week. He played nearly 3000 offensive snaps in college; this is not a traditional, youthful quarterback that benefits from sitting on the bench for a year or two.
Active free agent RB market was indicative of talent in the draft
Running backs Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Aaron Jones signed lucrative deals in free agency as teams sought out difference makers at the position. Those decisions were not made in a vacuum, but rather with an eye towards the future. Carolina selected the first running back (Texas' Jonathon Brooks) at No. 46 overall. The latest that the first running back has been taken in the NFL Draft was in 2016 when Tennessee took Washington's Bishop Sankey. Had it not been for Brooks, who the Panthers traded up to select, the first running back would not have been taken until No. 66 overall. Four were taken in the Top-100 overall.

--Ben An to Beat Jason Day (+100 at DraftKings): An is a streaky player who can go low when his putting is even mediocre. That includes four rounds in the 60s in tying for 14th here last year -- six shots off Day's winning mark. Day is coming off a T18 at the RBC Heritage, but had failed to crack the top-30 in his four previous starts. An is quietly third at DraftKings with 7 percent of the money backing him to win at +2500.
--Tom Kim Top 20 (+140 at BetMGM): Kim is one of several South Korean players on tour who now call the Dallas area home. He finished T34 here last year and has scuffled through the first half of the 2024 schedule, but he is coming off a T18 at the RBC Heritage following a T30 at the Masters.
--Jake Knapp to Make Cut (-155 at DraftKings): Knapp has found tour life more challenging since backing up his maiden win with a T4 at the Cognizant. He has failed to break the top 45 in five starts since, including a missed cut in Houston. Knapp posted a T55 at the Masters before a T62 at the RBC Heritage, which both sported far stronger fields than what he'll contend against this week.
2024 Prop Picks Record: 23-26-1
--Jordan Spieth (+1600 at BetMGM) is the top-ranked player in the field at No. 20. He has missed three of his past five cuts, but the Texas native did finish T10 at the Valero Texas Open and was runner-up here two years ago. He's the book's third-biggest liability this week while leading the field with 10.4 percent of the total bets and 9.3 percent of the money backing him to win since opening at +1400.
--Si Woo Kim (+1600) tied for second last year and enters with four consecutive top-30 results, highlighted by a T6 at The Players. The four-time winner on tour is third with 8.7 percent of the money backing him, which has driven Kim's odds down since opening at +2000.
--Jason Day (+2000) claimed his most recent victory at last year's Byron Nelson, but his most recent top-10 finish came at the Genesis in February.
--Sungjae Im (+2500) is coming off a win on the Korean Tour last week following a T12 at the RBC Heritage.
--Tom Kim (+2800) has finished T30 and T18 while showing improved form in his past two starts. He has been a popular wager at DraftKings, where Kim is tied for third with 7 percent of the money backing him to win.
--Tom Hoge (+2800) has received heavy action since opening at +4000. Backed by 9.0 percent of the money, Hoge is BetMGM's biggest liability.
--This is the final of three events that count toward the Aon Swing 5 for the Wells Fargo Championship, with the five players not otherwise exempt who earned the most points in those three events qualifying for the next signature event. The current top five are Billy Horschel, Chad Ramey, Wesley Bryan, Martin Trainer and Kevin Tway. The top 10 players in the FedEx Cup standings after this week who are not otherwise exempt will also qualify via the Aon Next 10.
--Will Zalatoris withdrew on Tuesday, citing the need to rest his surgically repaired back. He was replaced in the field by Nick Watney.
--A total of 2,021 birdies were recorded at TPC Craig Ranch in 2023, the third most of any course on tour last season.
--Zach Johnson will make his 500th career PGA Tour start this week.
--England's Kris Kim, the 16-year-old son of former LPGA Tour player Ji-Hyun Suh, will make his tour debut.
