Arlington is a great example of Texas being about big, lager than life things. In the city of Arlington the sports franchises are big, the theme parks are wild and the music is loud. If you are looking for a quaint getaway then Arlington is not the place but if you are looking for a city with a Texan sized attitude then Arlington can (almost) match Dallas and Fort Worth .

1. Get your thrills at Six Flags Over Texas

This massive amusement park attracts visitors around the country during their time spent in Arlington and in the surrounding state of Texas.

Thrill rides include two themed around Batman and a superman water ride which is guaranteed to leave you soaked.

There are also plenty of rides to cater for the less adventurous visitor to the park. As with all Six Flags parks, there are plenty of places to eat throughout the park as well as live entertainment and shopping.

2. Visit the home of the Dallas Cowboys

Whether or not you like American Football, and whether or not you support the Dallas Cowboys, you should still have a look at the AT&T Stadium during your time in Arlington. The stadium is an incredible feat of architecture.

It is the largest domed structure in the world and has a capacity of over 100,000 fans. Throughout the year the stadium hosts some of the most popular performers from around the world (at the time of writing Beyonce is about to perform live here).

Available tours include exploring the various artwork that covers the walls of the stadium and VIP guided tours.

3. Tour Globe Life Field

Although not as much of an architectural masterpiece as the AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field is more iconic.

The ballpark is home to the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball Franchise since 2020.

Tours of the stadium include access to backstage areas such as batting cages and press box and take place everyday in the off season.

4. Learn about the history of bowling

The Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame was relocated to Arlington from Missouri in 2008. It may not sound like an attraction for those of us who don’t enjoy bowling but you may well be surprised by what is on offer here.

For starters, the museum explores history from 5,000 years ago when, you may be surprised to know, the first evidence of the sport dates from.

As well as this, the museum explores the founding fathers of the game as well as what the coming years may entail for the sport.

5. Visit the Arlington Convention Center

The number 1 event and convention center in Arlington and the state of Texas is the Arlington Convention Center.

The center is a meeting and exhibit space that regularly hosts a wide range of events and has something to appeal to everybody. The center has over 50,000 square feet of exhibit space.

Typical conventions include car shows, travel shows and home conventions as well as the more unusual trading card and comic book conventions.

6. Shop ’til you drop at The Parks Mall at Arlington

The Parks Mall at Arlington opened in 1988 and is situated in South Arlington. The mall was renovated in 1996 and now looks the part in the 21st Century.

Opened in 1973, the Theater Arlington was the city’s first professional theater venue.

Throughout the season their are also several youth productions.

9. Become an Alley Cat

If the Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame has inspired you to go bowling, then you will not find a better place the Alley Cats.

It is the only Arlington attraction that is open all year round, 365 days, and has a full service bar and its own catering company providing quality “bowling alley” food.

Alley Cats is not just any bowling alley and aside from having a game, you can bowl in the dark, climb a climbing wall and watch informational videos on some of the huge state of the art screens in the facility.

10. Pop into Dave and Busters

Dave and Busters is a place to have fun. This bar stocks a vast collection of Midway games for all ages worth a combined total in excess of $1,000,000.

The collection of games on offer tops 200 and you don’t need to worry about coins or cash as they use the Dave and Busters Power Card.

11. Drink a local beer

The Division Brewery became the first locally owned brewery in Arlington when it opened.

The brewery is known for its unique flavors and features Indian pale ales, blondes and pilsners accompanied by more unusual sour fruity beers and very dark stouts.

12. Get wet at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor

13. Visit Lake Arlington

Lake Arlington is fisher’s paradise. The lake is very popular with fisherman due to its large bass inhabitants. It hosts regular competitions throughout the year.

It is a great place to kayak or canoe and it is possible to rent kayaks.

The lake also has a paddling trail which is the first of its kind in the Texas and is a unique chance to get your feet wet whilst taking a stroll.

14. See some art at UTA

Located at the University of Texas Arlington campus, The Gallery at UTA is a must for art buffs.

The Gallery is just under 5,000 square feet in size and, in addition to the various works of art on display, The Gallery also hosts lectures, seminars and screenings which educate visitors on various aspects of modern art.

The Gallery is free and open to the public. The Masters of Fine Art exhibition, which takes place in May, is well worth a visit due to the high standards of work.

15. Visit UTA again

Another reason to visit the University of Texas Arlington campus is the planetarium.

This concrete dome with a 60 foot diameter features state of the art planet projection and immersive surround sound.

9 Fantastic Things To Do In Arlington, Texas

You may know Arlington, Texas, as the home of the popular amusement park Six Flags Over Texas and to the University of Texas at Arlington. Arlington has also evolved into a valuable place to visit to see your favorite sports team play ball and has boasted quite a few other attractions in the past several years. But what you may not know is that the city is home to thriving art, entertainment, and music scenes, with its historic downtown being at the heart of it all. 

Arlington is about halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth and 15 minutes south of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. I was hosted at The Sanford House to see how Arlington has grown since treading my feet there years ago, but all opinions here are my very own.

Things To Do In Arlington

From sports venues or the huge shopping scene to a quaint historic downtown that’s recently been updated, there’s no doubt you’ll find something to do that your family will enjoy. 

You’ll always find something fantastic to do in any area of Arlington. The Urban Union district, in particular, is an up-and-coming area that helped put downtown back on the map. With a recent facelift, this area now offers fun, food, and a fabulous time with family and friends, all in a walkable area. I had a nice time touring the area and finding fun places to eat to share here.

1. Catalyst Creative Arts

On the corner of art and creativity in downtown Arlington is Catalyst Creative Arts — an art studio and event venue where art is for everyone! They offer birthday parties, girls’ nights out, lessons, and more. If you have something to celebrate, they will help you succeed with any art creation you want. And if you’re lucky, you may get to love on Cookie, the studio’s four-legged family member!

2. Stay And Spa At The Sanford House

One of Arlington’s premium boutique hotels, The Sanford House is located in historic downtown surrounded by gorgeous greenery, a beautifully manicured lawn, and a large courtyard that’s perfect for parties and weddings. You can choose between house rooms, cozy cottages, or villa suites next to the courtyard. It’s a perfect setting for romantic stays and girl trips, and it’s a female traveler’s best getaway – always safe, always beautiful. While you’re there, make a reservation for a self-care treatment at the spa. With each overnight stay, a hot breakfast is served in the Manor House dining room. I was hosted in a cottage for an overnight stay and loved their gated community.

3. Book A Charcuterie Board Pairing Event

Have you ever wanted to know how those wonderful charcuterie boards are put together? There is a right and wrong way to make one of these, and at Inspirations Catering & Events , that’s exactly what you can learn to do. Reservations are required for 2 to 18 people, and it’s located downtown.

4. Arlington Music Hall

From the first day of opening its doors in 1950, the Arlington Music Hall has been the go-to place for live entertainment. It’s still going strong in the heart of downtown and has a few of its original pieces still attached, including the marquee sign. The Music Hall is the perfect place to experience all types of music, comedy, and theater. Bring the whole family for a great time.

5. Texas Live!

Texas Live! is one of Arlington’s newest entertainment venues that combines entertainment, restaurants, and accommodations into one exciting destination. Next to the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Park and AT&T Stadium is where you’ll find this spectacular event venue. It’s the perfect destination for sports fans, and a family destination as well. There are live outdoor events almost every night of the week, and if you’re hungry or thirsty, there’s plenty of restaurants and bars to explore. Texas Live! is also adjacent to Live! by Loews luxury hotel, the perfect setting for all the above. Put on your dancing shoes and come out to listen to country, rock, indie, pop, and electronic dance music … a little bit of everything for its diverse crowd.

6. Take A Tour Of AT&T Stadium

I’m sure you know, but in case you don’t, AT&T Stadium is home to the Dallas Cowboys. But did you know you and your family can take several different types of tours there? Some tours will appeal to all interests and ages and are available daily. Experience the field and throw the ball, marvel over the art displayed throughout the stadium, or opt for a self-guided tour. There’s something for everyone, for a price. Be a kid for the day and have fun!

7. Take A Hike At River Legacy Park

Inside River Legacy Park is eight miles of paved hike and bike trails, a 10-mile mountain bike trail, picnic areas, a pavilion you can reserve, gorgeous river overlooks, restrooms, playgrounds, and more. A canoe and kayak launch is also available — plan for a full day at this park.

8. Rent A Pontoon Boat On Lake Arlington

When I was growing up, my family had a deck boat similar to a pontoon boat that we took out on the water almost every weekend at our lake house. This, by far, was one adventure this girl couldn’t wait for. I loved sitting at the front of the boat, sometimes dangling my legs off the side and letting the wind blow my hair as I watched birds fly over and skiers jump over the wake. I caught myself daydreaming a lot. So if you’re in Arlington for a long period of time, rent a pontoon boat and let the wind blow your hair! Check out what all there is to do at Lake Arlington .

9. Enjoy Nature At Crystal Canyon Natural Area

Enjoy a walk along a half-mile gravel path inside this 40-acre area in its natural state. Crystal Canyon Natural Area is one of North Arlington’s hidden gems in nature. If you’re into geology at all, this area is for you. Fossilized clams, gypsum layers, and fine grain sandstone have been found here. Immerse yourself in nature while reading educational signs along the way. Benches are along the path in case you need to sit a spell.

Pro Tip: It’s a hilly path — wear good hiking shoes.

Best Restaurants In Arlington

Arlington is a metropolitan area, the second-largest city in the county next to Fort Worth. Restaurants in Arlington, TX, are widely diverse, with every type of cuisine imaginable, including a large mix of international cuisine. In downtown alone, you’ll find many quaint restaurants with wide-open spaces outside on lawns and patios.

Restaurant506 At The Sanford House

For contemporary American cuisine, head to Restaurant506 , located at Arlington’s boutique hotel, The Sanford House. They serve lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, and a hot breakfast to their house guests. You do not have to stay at the hotel to eat at the restaurant. Reservations are recommended but not required. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

The Tipsy Oak

What’s better than eating dinner and listening to live music? Eating on The Tipsy Oak ‘s large outdoor patio, of course! What a cool place to hang out at night! Save room from the day’s eats for house specials of sirloin, blackened salmon, or fried shrimp, or go for their mouthwatering hamburger and fries. It’s a very quaint and laidback place downtown to hang out with friends and family. Order up a big helping of their smoked brisket cheese fries — you’ll be glad you did!

Prince Lebanese Grill

Inside an old converted Sonic is home to Prince Lebanese Grill . Family is the center of it all. I love their story — it’s a must-read and can be found on their website. Prince Lebanese Grill is also a favorite place to eat among the locals, says Jaime, owner of Catalyst Creative Arts — he says he goes there at least twice a month just for the rice. If that doesn’t get you excited, Guy Fieri featured their famous rice recipe on Guy’s Big Bite and on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives .

Legal Draft Beer Co.

A taproom with a huge outdoor covered patio serving up world-class full of flavor beer. Legal Draft Beer Co. is located in the Urban Union district of downtown Arlington. You must check out their locally brewed beer selection. I’m sure you’ll find a favorite, and if you can’t hang around, they sell beer to-go as well. Once a month, they hold an Urban Open-Air Market with fresh local vendors that come out and sell their wares.

Vila Brazil Steakhouse

When dinner rolls around, out comes a not-to-miss-steakhouse. Vila Brazil is one of Arlington’s premier dining experiences, and they aim to please. And they know a thing or two about pairing your favorite wine with your dinner of choice. Reservations are open, and dinner starts at 5 p.m.

The Social House

An indoor-outdoor bar-type restaurant with wide opened doors that serves local cuisine made right in their scratch kitchen. The Social House is set up with the bar in the middle and TVs all around. Watch your favorite team play here, and socialize with your friends on any given day — open every day of the week.

Everyone loves pizza! When you try Cane Rosso , you may not want to eat it anywhere else! Your dining experience can be indoor or out on their large yard with picnic tables. It’s a great place for the kiddos to run around. You’ll love knowing they use the highest quality ingredients, and they make their own dough and mozzarella. The perfect pair — Texas Rangers and pizza! Just look for the red pig out front.

Locals love downtown Arlington, especially now that it’s been revamped and excellent family-friendly restaurants have come to the area. They love sitting outside on the patio of these restaurants.

Just a short hop over the Potomac River from Washington, DC , Arlington is famous for being the home of Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon. But there's a lighter side to this charming county and plenty of wonderful things to see and do away from austere settings.

Come here to dine, admire art, play ice hockey, see a play in an award-winning venue and even walk in nature with some of the most iconic views around. There's much more to Arlington than you might think – here are 15 amazing ways to experience it.

1. Be awed by the Iwo Jima Memorial

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the moment six Marines installed the US flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima during one of the most hard-fought battles in World War II. His soul-stirring photo became the inspiration for the Iwo Jima Memorial  – the nickname for the US Marine Corps Memorial – rising atop a knoll overlooking the National Mall.

It's powerful and poignant, with the flag proudly flying 24/7 by executive decree. On Tuesday evenings during summer, the Marine Corps sunset parade , a musical extravaganza of marching, drums and bugles, takes place. Nearby, the Netherlands Carillon, a gift of the Dutch, offers live summer concerts and automated concerts at other times. The grassy grounds offer an awe-inspiring perspective over the National Mall, a popular fireworks-watching spot on the Fourth of July.

Planning tip:  There is no guaranteed seating at the parade, so feel free to bring your own lawn chairs or blankets.

2. Spot planes at Gravelly Point Park

At Gravelly Point Park, near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, airplanes come in for a landing just over your head, so close you can feel the roar of the engines reverberate throughout your body as you study their underbellies. You're right on the flight path of landing and departing planes.

Locals swarm to this small, wide-open park for the informal aviation show, bringing picnics, kids and dogs. It's a circus of activity, with runners and bikers zipping past on the 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail, while the sweeping views to the east take in DC's monuments rising across the Potomac River.

Planning tip:  You can only reach the park from the northbound side of George Washington Memorial Parkway.

3. See a play and have dinner in Shirlington 

You don't have to go to the Kennedy Center to see star-filled shows in the DC area. The Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in Arlington is an under-the-radar regional theater that seats only 300 people. But it's a theatrical powerhouse that not only produces Broadway-caliber shows but has also hosted 59 world premiere works since its founding in 1989.

You'll find classics and new productions, established stars and emerging talents. It's the cultural anchor of the urban village of Shirlington, a lively neighborhood of mostly restaurants, a handful of shops and a movie theater.

4. Visit hallowed ground at Arlington National Cemetery

Nearly 400,000 stark-white tombstones undulate along the rolling green hills of 639-acre Arlington National Cemetery . Only the most esteemed soldiers, representing every conflict since the Revolutionary War, are buried in this most somber of destinations – the qualifications are stringent.

The welcome center has exhibits, and this is where you can pick up the shuttle that accesses specific sites, or you can walk (warning: it's hilly!). Don't miss the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and John F Kennedy's gravesite, marked by an eternal flame.

The land, originally owned by Robert E Lee, was confiscated by the Union after he fled to join the Confederacy. Sitting atop a knoll, his plantation home, Arlington House , has been reinterpreted to tell the fuller story of all who lived here before the cemetery was established during the Civil War – the Lee family and enslaved workers alike.

5. Go on a hike at Potomac Overlook Regional Park

The namesake view of the Potomac River at this urban, tree-shaded oasis in the heart of Arlington is seasonal – and not much to write home about, honestly. The reason to visit the rollicking, 67-acre park is to hike on easy trails, taking in a typical Virginia woodland of oaks, maples, cedars and magnolias. You can hear birds flitting about, squirrels rustling in the brush and the quietude of nature. The nature center has interactive exhibits on local flora and fauna.

Planning tip:  The park has a covered picnic area with tables, seating and restrooms nearby. Bring your own food and enjoy a budget-friendly lunch in a lovely setting.

6. Celebrate women's achievements at the Military Women's Memorial

Just outside the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, you'll spy what looks like a giant neoclassical wall. It's not just a wall, but a memorial honoring servicewomen from all wars and occupations. Step inside, and you'll discover a modern education center, theater and computerized registry of military women. Plus, there are exhibits with all kinds of interesting facts; for example, you'll learn there were women spies during the Revolutionary War, while others fought dressed as men.

Another highlight is the 360-degree rooftop view. Behind you, rows of Arlington's bright-white tombstones march over the hillside, while in front, the star-studded panorama of the Memorial Bridge and Lincoln Monument unfurls before your eyes. Inspiring quotes are etched into glass panels.

7. Take a moment to remember 9/11 at the Pentagon Memorial

A sprawling complex rising in the heart of Arlington, the Pentagon is home to the US Department of Defense and one of the world's largest office buildings, with 6,500,000 sq ft of working space for more than 23,000 military and civilian employees.

Five sides comprise this massive structure, with five above-ground floors and two basement levels, its corridors measuring a total of 17.5 miles. Yet thanks to the spoke-and-ring design, it takes only seven minutes to walk between the two farthest points. 

On September 11, 2001, a hijacked jet struck the Pentagon's west side, killing 184 people. The outdoor 9/11 Pentagon Memorial honors those killed, with 184 illuminated benches inscribed with each victim's name, age and location at the time of attack. The memorial is open 24/7, and a 24-minute audio tour is available by calling 202-741-1004.

Planning tip:  You can book a tour of the Pentagon by registering and completing security checks. Book well in advance to allow time for the authorization process.

8. Enjoy the springtime beauty at Lady Bird Johnson Park

Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson was always known for her love of flowers, and while her husband, 36th president Lyndon Johnson, was in office, she strove to make Washington, DC – as well as the nation's interstate highways – as beautiful as possible.

Renamed in her honor in 1968, Lady Bird Johnson Park  – an island in the Potomac linked to the mainland by bridges – puts on an extraordinary floral show throughout the seasons. A million blooming daffodils followed by 11,000 red tulips announce spring, while prim hardwoods turn into fiery reds and oranges in fall. There are weeping willows, dogwoods, crab apples and more. Completing the picturesque scene, the views across the Potomac take in Washington's marble monuments.

You'll find two monuments within the park: the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac, and the 1922 Navy and Merchant Marine Memorial. The 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail meanders through, ideal for bikers, runners and walkers. Drivers can only access the park from the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

9. Hang out at Ballston Quarter

Arlington's once-fading Ballston Mall has been resuscitated. Ballston Quarter, as it's now called, has undergone a facelift to create a sparkling indoor-outdoor space with entertainment venues, activities and, of course, shopping. There are sit-down restaurants featuring some of the area's favorite chefs, as well as a buzzy food hall offering everything from street tacos to gourmet doughnuts to local craft brews. You can come here for a cooking class, a trivia game, a Caps or Nats watch party on two giant screens and even take part in a live-action adventure at 5 Wits Arlington.

Planning tip:  On the top floor, you'll find the MedStar Capitals Iceplex , which not only offers a public ice-skating rink, but it's also where Alex Ovechkin and other Stanley Cup-winning Washington Capitals practice. Check their schedule here . 

10. Bike the gorgeous Mount Vernon Trail

Edging the Potomac River for 18 miles from Theodore Roosevelt Island to Mount Vernon, the floral-bedecked Mount Vernon Trail is a primo escape for bikers, walkers, runners and rollerbladers. Only about 4.5 miles are in Arlington, but what a 4.5 miles they are. For much of that length, you have iconic views across the river, taking in the Lincoln Memorial , Washington Monument, US Capitol , Memorial Bridge and more.

Springtime flowers bloom gloriously, while autumn ignites in blazing maples, dogwoods and redbuds. Highlights include Theodore Roosevelt Island, Gravelly Point Park (the popular plane-spotting perch) and Lady Bird Johnson Park. It runs parallel to the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which offers the same views by car.

11. Stretch your legs on Theodore Roosevelt Island

A pedestrian bridge sweeps you across a placid channel to this 88-acre island in the middle of the Potomac River, where 2.5 miles of hiking trails wander through swampland, marsh and upland forest. Once an overgrown farm that was transformed into a natural oasis in the 1930s, it's now the domain of squirrels, raccoons, deer and the occasional red fox. The focal point is the 17ft bronze of the 26th US president rising in the center, honoring the man who adored the wilderness.

The island is accessible by car only from the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, or on foot or by bike along the Mount Vernon Trail.

12. Make dinner reservations in Clarendon

Vietnamese refugees flocked to the Clarendon neighborhood in the 1960s and '70s, and while few of Little Saigon's restaurants remain, a couple do, including Nam Viet , with a photo wall full of famous diners. Post-gentrification, the neighborhood has a bevy of terrace restaurants and bars catering to the going-out crowd. You'll find everything from Italian and Japanese to Irish and Baltic. Ambar , Green Pig Bistro and Circa are perennial favorites.

There's shopping, too, including the outdoor Crossing Clarendon shopping center, with big-name stores like Pottery Barn and Barnes & Noble. Among several annual events that take place here, Clarendon Day is a fun street festival with bar crawls, an arts festival and the thrilling Clarendon Cup, a professional bike race.

13. Admire public art in Rosslyn

Arlington may not seem like an artistic destination, but more than 70 permanent public art installations sprinkle the county – and counting.

You'll find many of them in the neighborhood of Rosslyn, including one of the earliest: completed in 1984, Dark Star Park  features spherical concrete sculptures resembling, according to artist Nancy Holt, "extinguished stars." Anna and David,  by Miriam Schapiro, is a colorful, three-story sculpture of a dancing couple, and Luminous Bodies , marking four corners of the bridge over I-66, is a collection of 26-foot-high illuminated sculptures that change colors at night. Take a self-guided walking or driving tour to spot them all.

14. Look to the skies at the US Air Force Memorial

Ascending high into the blue sky above Arlington, three curved, shimmering, stainless steel spires honor the men and women of the US Air Force. More specifically, the spires represent the contrails of Air Force Thunderbirds as they disperse in a "bomb burst" maneuver.

Dedicated in 2006, the US Air Force Memorial is the last military service monument to be installed in the DC area. It's surrounded by granite walls with inscriptions celebrating the valor and heritage of aviation pioneers and includes an 8ft-tall bronze Honor Guard statue and a glass contemplation wall paying tribute to fallen airmen and women. You'll find it near Arlington National Cemetery, overlooking the Pentagon.

15. Delve into the world of drugs at the DEA Museum

Tucked away in an office building in a nondescript part of Arlington, the last thing you'd expect to find is a thrilling museum dedicated to drugs. But there it is on Army Navy Drive, a whole museum spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) that explores the nefarious world of drug activity and enforcement over the past 150 years.

Exhibits delve into the science and history of opium, marijuana and cocaine, while a rotating display highlights such noteworthy moments as "taking down El Chapo." But it's the artifacts that are most riveting. Among the DEA's collection of more than 5000 objects and 40,000 photographs are green platform shoes worn by a DEA special agent while investigating a 1970s cocaine ring; a spiritual icon found among members of the Gulf, Sinaloa and Juarez drug cartels; and a spiked bamboo booby trap that protected drug traffickers' crops in Thailand.

Planning tip:  As the museum is within a federal building, you'll need to bring a government-issued photo ID to enter.
