Taking place at Panther Island in Fort Worth, Texas, “ Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Festival ,” will be making history as Texas’ largest bass music festival welcoming 10,000 headbangers together for one day. Shaq launched his professional music career in 1993, when he dropped his first ever rap album “ SHAQ DIESEL ,” selling millions of copies around the world. After retiring from the NBA in 2011 – Shaq participated in various activities including broadcasting as a sports analyst but shot back into his music career with an international debut at Tomorrowland in 2015.

Shaq shared why he chose to pursue a career in electronic music in his interview with Grant Cardone saying, “I do it because it gives me the same feeling as basketball. ” He later explains that he feels a similar adrenaline rush felt by many in his infectious and energetic performances.

It may be a shock to many who aren’t familiar with the success of DJ Diesel, but this isn’t the first festival he has commenced. His first successful festival, “ Shaq’s Fun House,” debuted at Miami Music Week in 2018, which has been a hub for electronic music lovers throughout the years. In a recent interview with Billboard , Shaq explains how he is, “building this festival for all my headbangers out there.” He highlights the importance of making it feel like a safe place, saying he is, “excited for this to be a home for bass music fans throughout Texas that we can create a community around.”

My favorite thing in the whole world is music and after hearing “One” by Swedish House Mafia for the first time in 2014, I was hooked on EDM. Shaquille O'Neal brings bass music festival to Fort Worth

By Julia Falcon , Johannah Grenaway

June 20, 2023 / 5:11 PM CDT / CBS Texas

FORT WORTH (CBSNewsTexas.com) – NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal, otherwise known as DJ Diesel, is bringing a bass music festival to his new home state of Texas.

"I live in Dallas," he told CBS News Texas' Keith Russell. "I love Texas, I love the Fort Worth area. Dubstep is what the kids like, and so, I'm gonna give them what they like ... They call me 'the dubstep dad.'"

O'Neal announced on Tuesday that "Shaq's Bass All-Stars Festival" will take place at Panther Island Pavilion in Fort Worth on Sept. 16.

The festival will have two stages with 14 different bass music artists and top dubstep DJs, including Alison Wonderland and O'Neal as DJ Diesel.

My first bass music festival 💪🏾 (definitely not my last) https://t.co/1vzLS42yQF — SHAQ (@SHAQ) June 20, 2023

"Let me explain to you why I DJ," O'Neal shared. "From 13-40, three times a week, for an hour and a half, my adrenaline was people yelling at me. Whether it was cheers, whether it was boos, whether it was obscenities, I lived through that adrenaline rush. When I stopped playing, it was gone ... When I went to a bass festival one time and watched the DJ perform for hours, it was the same feeling as the LA Lakers vs. the Dallas Mavericks in Game 6 — Western Conference Finals."

Watch Keith's full interview with Shaq:

Fast forward to today, O'Neal says he is "the most dominant bass DJ there is."  Tickets for his festival go on sale this Friday.

Shaquille O’Neal to launch music festival in North Texas

DALLAS — Shaquille O’Neal will show North Texas his DJ Diesel persona on Sept. 16.

O’Neal, the 7-foot-1 NBA legend and sometimes Carrollton resident, is debuting an electronic music festival, Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Festival, in Fort Worth.

The event will feature 14 entertainers across two stages at Panther Island Pavilion. O’Neal curated the lineup, which includes Alison Wonderland, Kai Wachi, Sullivan King, Crankdat, Jantsen, Layz, Emorfik, Hairitage, Leotrix, Charlitz Web, Soltan and Ruvlo b2b Celo.

“I DJ tons of concerts, clubs, and festivals, but taking ownership of my own bass festival is something I am so passionate about,” O’Neal told Billboard. “I just bought a house in Texas, the music scene there is awesome and was the perfect place to launch it.”

Last year, O’Neal bought a 5,269-square-foot home, which was listed for $1,224,900, in a gated community in Carrollton. He has been spotted around Dallas-Fort Worth, sometimes interacting with fans.

Tickets start at $49 and will go on sale to the public at noon Friday. A presale starts at 10 a.m. O’Neal said he wants to keep tickets affordable to make the event inclusive.

“I don’t DJ for the money,” O’Neal said. “I DJ to replace the Game 7 energy that I can’t seem to replicate anywhere else besides at music festivals. “For me, Shaq’s Bass All-Stars festival is about inviting the whole state of Texas out for a good time, and it’s important to me for this to be a community-driven event that all sorts of people can afford.”

The festival, produced by Medium Rare and the Texas-based Disco Donnie Presents, will include a food truck village, games, “activations” and more.

“I am building this festival for all my headbangers out there,” O’Neal said. “I’m bringing together my favorite acts and am excited for this to be a home for bass music fans throughout Texas that we can create a community around.”

Fort Worth is a growing destination for national acts. Last week, Dickies Arena was ranked No. 2 in Billboard’s “Mid-Year 2023 Top 10 Worldwide Boxscore Chart” for venues with a seating capacity of 10,001 to 15,000.

O’Neal told Billboard his event is likely to take place in other cities, too.

“We are excited to bring the concept on the road,” he said.

The festival will run from 4 p.m. to midnight. In April, the Ubbi Dubbi festival at Panther Island bothered Fort Worth residents as far as 10 miles from the venue, who said the noise carried late into the night.

Dozens of Fort Worth residents reported feeling the rumble of bass sounds from electronic dance music in their homes and filed complaints with the Tarrant Regional Water District, which operates Panther Island. The complaints prompted the district to set new hours for concerts at Panther Island. Events will be allowed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 7 a.m. to midnight on Thursday through Saturday. O’Neal’s event will be on a Saturday.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, O’Neal is a graduate of Cole High School in San Antonio. He played for six teams during his 19-year NBA career and won four NBA championships before retiring in 2011.

He continues to have an affinity for Texas.

In just the past year, O’Neal has emerged as a frontman for the Big Chicken restaurant chain, which plans to open locations in North Texas. He’s been spotted at a Babe’s Chicken Dinner House in Carrollton. Carrollton police officers have posed for selfies with him. He’s given away a washing machine to a young family at a Best Buy in Dallas. He’s appeared at a basketball camp in Roanoke. He’s FaceTimed with a blind fan from a Chicken N Pickle in Grand Prairie.

Being a TCU football fan caused him to lose a bet on “NBA on TNT.” O’Neal vowed to eat a horned frog if TCU lost to Georgia in the College Football Playoff national championship game. TCU lost 65-7.

O’Neal performed as DJ Diesel for the first time at TomorrowWorld 2015 in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia. The festival was a spinoff of the Belgian festival Tomorrowland.

In 2018, O’Neal staged his inaugural Fun House festival series around major entertainment and sports events. In February, he fronted the Super Bowl Fun House with guests that included T-Pain, Jamie Foxx, Patrick Mahomes, Adrian Peterson and more.

Shaq’s Bass All-Stars have played at touring events across the U.S. since the banner’s inception. This will be the organization’s first large-scale event.

“I’ve got a big platform, and I love to support up-and-coming acts as well,” O’Neal told Billboard. “Some of these little guys on the lineup are just as good as the headliners, and that’s what Shaq’s Bass All-Stars is all about. … It doesn’t matter who is performing if we are all together having a great time and headbanging.”

When Shaquille O’Neal attended TomorrowWorld in 2014 – without a ticket, which isn’t something you need when you’re an NBA Hall of Famer – DJ Diesel was born. It was his first EDM festival, and after attending a slew of sets from iconic DJs, such as Skrillex and Steve Aoki , he realized that he was ready to take his lifelong passion for music in a new direction and further cement his legacy as more than just a basketball player. “Shaq was like a kid in a candy shop,” Joe Silberzweig, DJ Diesel’s co-manager, recalls of the big man’s pure enamourment with the energy, atmosphere and sound design of the festival.

The NBA legend’s fervor for music goes way back, however. He released the rap album Shaq Diesel  in 1993, which sold over a million copies and peaked at number 25 on the Billboard 100 Chart. Now, he’s establishing his own lane in EDM as DJ Diesel, making music that’s true to his playful and easygoing personal style. DJ Diesel is balancing a run of festival performances (such as Tomorrowland , Lost Lands, Lollapalooza and Electric Zoo) with his lengthy Las Vegas residency at the Wynn , all the while still cooking up new projects.

Shaq talks life in North Texas: why he’s here, what he’s launching, where he eats

Shaquille o’neal, a sometimes carrollton resident, announced a fort worth music festival and owns big chicken restaurants..

Shaquille O’Neal is only 51 years old, but he’s thinking ahead — like where he might settle down in retirement.

The good news for North Texas: It could be here. The bad news: It could also be Florida.

The 7-foot-1 NBA legend already owns a home in Carrollton. He’s pals with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. He’s also doing business in North Texas, fronting a chain of planned restaurants called Big Chicken and now bringing a music festival , Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Festival, to Fort Worth in September.

Announced Tuesday, the event at Panther Island Pavilion features 14 acts including O’Neal himself, who performs as DJ Diesel. Tickets start at $49 and go on sale to the public at noon Friday.

On the heels of the festival announcement, O’Neal got on a call with The Dallas Morning News to talk about what’s next for him, and why it includes lots of bass.

This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

You’re spending a lot of time here in North Texas with the businesses, the new house and now your festival. What keeps you coming back here?

We used to come up to Dallas [from San Antonio] a lot as a youngster — and the drive, the scenery, the land, and the people in Dallas have always been very hospitable to me. I just fell in love with Dallas. [I’ve been] thinking about retirement in the next four or five years, and Texas and Florida would be my options to have a place to live. Already lived in Houston. Grew up in San Antonio. But just always had a great time in Dallas. So I decided to get my little house there in Carrollton, and I’m actually there more than people know. Dallas is my midway point when I have to go do business on the West Coast. So, like, I got to do business on the West Coast in two weeks. I’m going to just go stay in Dallas for about a week and just get some rest.

Related: Decades later, Shaquille O’Neal still thinks about playing for Mark Cuban, Mavericks

When I was young, it was OK to have [a big] house. But a five-bedroom house with a person who’s living by myself, I think that’s fine. I think that’s plenty. I just wanted to get something quick. When I get close to retirement, I’m looking to go down to the Southlake area. So I’ll definitely get me a monster there. I was spending way too much money at the hotels, and it don’t make sense. I’m very, very smart with my dollars. I just used this DJ money and purchased me a house.

You’ve been spotted at Babe’s Chicken Dinner House and Chicken N Pickle. And you’re opening up Big Chicken franchises in North Texas. What’s this fascination with chicken restaurants?

Growing up, all we had was fried chicken. In college, we had a lot of fried chicken. I used to do various things — chicken with cheese, chicken with mayo, ketchup, slice it up. And I’m a big supporter of Cane’s. My good friend Todd Graves [CEO of Raising Cane’s], he just made me love chicken even more. So, then I just came up with the concept: Big Chicken.

Besides chicken, where do you eat in Dallas-Fort Worth?

I just went [to Joe T. Garcia’s in Fort Worth] last week. It was a nice place. Behind me, people were having a good time. We definitely have to go back. And then when I’m in Dallas, I go to Nick & Sam’s all the time.

Is the Shaq’s Bass All-Stars Festival all set for Sept. 16?

We’re all set. I’m a DJ. You probably don’t know what that is. You’re probably the same age as me. But everyone knows I’m a juvenile delinquent. And first let me answer why do I DJ: Imagine us Lakers versus the Mavericks in a Game Six. We need this game and Dallas needs this game? Imagine the crowd in Dallas and how crazy they will be. Those are how all those kids are at all those festivals. It’s the only thing that gives me the adrenaline fix similar to a Game Six of a championship game. When I got done playing, you know, I get a little fanfare. But an hour, an hour-and-a-half, of these music festivals gives me the same impact as if I were playing in a game. When I get done with [DJing], I feel like I just played a Game Seven — energetic crowd going up and down, everybody having fun, kids just out there jamming. So that’s why I do DJing.

You’re going to turn this into the Fort Worth Tomorrowland. Is that what you’re going for?

I just want everyone to be safe, have fun and have a great time.

You seem like a different person when you’re doing the DJ thing. Do you feel any different behind the turntable?

It’s similar to Shaq. Like right now, you’re talking to Shaquille, the nice guy. But you remember when I was Shaq? Elbowing Shawn Bradley and all those guys that played for the Mavericks. When the kids pay that money to see me perform, my job is to make sure I give them a good show.

Is Cuban invited to your bass festival?

Of course he is.

Yep, all those guys.

💿 DJ Diesel on the track

In case you’ve missed out on the 51-year-old’s rise to EDM — electronic dance music — fame, here’s some background on how he became known as DJ Diesel .

Shaq took the stage for the first time as Diesel during the 2015 TomorrowWorld festival in Belgium and never looked back.

In 2018, the 7-ft-1-inch basketball legend was given the opportunity to DJ at Ohio’s Lost Lands Festival and later staged his inaugural Fun House festival around major entertainment and sports events.

The dubstep dad has a busy summer ahead leading up to the Cowtown festival with his “ Summer of SHAQ ” tour with performances at Chicago’s Lollapalooza, Los Angeles’ HARD Summer, and Belgium’s Tomorrowland.
