Great British Bucket List

The Best Sussex Vineyard Tours

The best sussex vineyard tours will have you sipping english sparkling wine in the south downs and sampling fine whites by the south coast..

Vineyard at sunset

England’s wine scene has surprised a lot of people. 100 years ago, who would have expected our sparkling wines to be out performing classic champagne brands at wine awards around the world? While England’s wine heritage may not have the same reputation as our friends across the channel, the conditions and landscapes in Britain are becoming more and more suited to wine production.

As Europe heats up, the south of England has become a desirable region to plant vineyards, with dry, warm summers and cool winters – perfect for growing grapes.

Pouring English sparkling wine

The majority of English wine is white or sparkling, but there are a few bottles of rose and red in production too. Today, there more than 700 different vineyards scattered across Great Britain, ranging from tiny producers to large-scale operations.

Why is Sussex such a great place for wine production? Well, the vineyards in this part of England have similar soil types and climate conditions as the best vineyards in the world. The moderate climate gives the grapes time to ripen slowly, increasing their ripeness, complexity and acidity. On an ideal year, the vines will avoid frost in April and enjoy a warm September, plumping them up before harvest in September or October.

Grapes on a vine

The chalk and sandy soil in the region is also similar to that found in the Champagne region of France.

In 2018, Ridgeview winery in Sussex won the title of Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition. That’s not all, there are several others close by with excellent reputations.

One of the best ways to get to know the region’s impressive wine selection is by tasting it on site.

All of these Sussex vineyard tours give you the opportunity to see how the process works, from grapevine to bottle. Plus, the best bit? You get to drink some too!

The Best Sussex Vineyards

Depending on where you’re travelling from, I’ve separated the vineyards into their locations in East and West Sussex. If you can’t plan a trip right away, or want to give the trip as a present, you could buy a gift voucher via the websites below.

East Sussex Vineyard Tours

Rathfinny wine estate.

Rathfinny Wine Estate was established in 2010 near Alfriston in the beautiful South Downs. The vineyard is located on south-facing slopes, benefiting from warmth, sea air and excellent chalky soil. It’s as though Sussex has a microclimate designed for growing grapes for wine production!

Rathfinny Wine Estate is one of the largest vineyards in the UK, and just ten years into its lifespan, is already producing award-winning English sparkling wines.

It has its sights set on an ambitious task too – to expand to approximately 350 acres of vines, producing almost eighty thousand cases of Sussex Sparkling wine per year.

Wine tasting tour at Rathfinny Wine Estate

The vineyard is open for tours and tastings at various times throughout the year.  Of all the Sussex vineyard tours, this one is amazing for learning about how sparkling wine is produced and what makes it special.

After a wander through the vines, hearing from a knowledgeable guide all about the process, it’s time to head to the tasting room for a few samples.

Terrace at Rathfinny Wine Estate

It’s worth noting that Rathfinny Wine Estate also has a top restaurant (the Rathfinny restaurant menu looks incredible!) plus smart accommodation on a B&B basis.

Address: Rathfinny Wine Estate, Alfriston, East Sussex, BN26 5TU.

Bluebell Vineyard Estates

Bluebell Vineyard Estates lies in a contrasting location, close to bluebell strewn woods and on the edge of Winne-The-Pooh’s favourite forest, Ashdown Forest!

The family-run vineyard was established in 2005, and up until last year had focused on producing top class English sparkling wines. In 2019, the vineyard released a new range of still wines. With 100 acres of vines, and a beautiful location too, this is one of the best Sussex vineyard tours.

Bluebell Vineyard, Sussex

There are a few options on offer, including guided vineyard tours with tastings, picnics, special events and self-guided woodland trail walks.

Their Sussex vineyard tours offer a ‘grape to glass’ experience. After seeing the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grape varieties growing, there’s a chance to peek inside the winery and production room, before tasting four different wines in the tasting room.

Ridgeview Wine Estate

Located close to the stunning village of Ditchling in East Sussex, this Sussex vineyard has an excellent reputation for its full flavoured sparkling wines. Another lovely site, on the edge of the South Downs, the region benefits from great chalky soil and a moderate climate.

The vines were planted back in 1995, back when wine production in Sussex was a pretty niche activity. And these days? Ridgeview is one of the top producers of English sparkling wine – sold by top brands Laithwaites, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer. It’s also won several awards including Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

There are regular guided tours of Ridgeview Wine Estate, where you can find out more about what it takes to produce an award-winning sparkling wine, what the key characteristics of the wine are, and quiz the staff all about life on a vineyard. Then it’s time for a few samples in the beautiful tasting room overlooking the South Downs.

West Sussex Vineyard Tours

Nyetimber vineyard.

The most famous of all the Sussex vineyards on the list, I’ve seen the Nyetimber wine labels on numerous occasions at restaurants and attractions in the UK. Nyetimber’s estate is located in picturesque West Chiltington, and again enjoys a climate that is perfect for a slow ripening of the grapes.

Nyetimber Vineyards

The wines are produced using traditional methods, including an ageing process during which the wines develop complex flavours.

Nyetimber offer one of the best Sussex vineyard tours. The two-hour tour begins in the White Barn, learning about the history of the wine brand from an experienced guide. Then it’s time for a wander around the pretty estate and vineyards, taking in views over the West Sussex countryside.

Nyetimber English Sparkling Wine

You’ll finish your tour in the 15th Century Medieval Barn for a tasting of Nyetimber’s award-winning sparkling wines, including the gold-medal winning Classic Cuvee Multi-Vintage, Rosé Multi-Vintage and Cuvee Chérie Multi-Vintage.

Stopham Vineyard

This spectacular Sussex vineyard is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty in West Sussex and forms part of the South Downs National Park. The vines here benefit from great conditions, including a sandy soil and moderate climate.

At Stopham, they grow Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Bacchus grape varieties as well as producing sparkling wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This is top quality wine too… I mean, if it’s on the menu at restaurants such as Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, it must be!

In terms of tours, you can visit this picturesque West Sussex vineyard most Saturdays from April to October (call and book before you visit). Usually you’ll tour the grounds with one of the winemakers, so you’ll learn lots about production, what makes this area great for the grapes and see all the equipment that’s used too. Then it’s time for a guided tasting of a selection of wines.

Address : Stopham Vineyard, Stopham, Pulborough, West Sussex, RH20 1EE.

Albourne Estate

Just twenty minutes from Brighton lies this beautiful wine estate, overlooking the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park. It’s one of the smaller and newer wineries in Sussex, launching in 2010, and now covering 30 acres.

Albourne Estate, West Sussex vineyard tours

The estate produces several white wines as well as top-quality English sparkling wine. I think a wine tour of Albourne Estate offers a great introduction to wine production in England.

It’s a family-run business, with passionate individuals overseeing all the key processes. On a tour, you’ll have a chance to ask all the questions you could desire and peek into all the areas of the business, from the vines themselves to the bottling and labelling areas.

Once you’ve toured the vineyards and seen the production process, it’s off to the tasting room for a tasting of four of the Albourne Estate’s wines.

Bolney Wine Estate

This is a vineyard with family at its heart. Three generations of the family work at Bolney Wine Estate, heading up different operations. The founders set up camp in 1972, when they planted three acres of vines.

Since then, the estate has gone on to produce premium red, white, rose and English sparkling wines, picking up several awards along the way. One of the most prestigious accolades came in 2017, when the winery took the title of Winery of the Year at the UK Wine Awards.

Bolney Wine Estate (Photo: Chris Orange)

As Sussex wine tours go, the options at Bolney Wine Estate are among the most magical! The vineyard trail is a beautiful route for all the family to explore, charting Bertie the Bolney Bunny’s adventures. Kids will love passing through the vines using the trail map, and there’s a chance to win a prize for finding Bertie too!

Bolney Wine Estate balcony overlooking the vines (Photo: Chris Orange)

For grown-ups, there are several offerings too. The most popular is a casual tour of the vineyards followed by a tasting, but there are more sophisticated options too, including a gourmet dinner with wine pairings. The food looks top-notch, so I know which tour I’d choose!

Address: Bolney Wine Estate, Foxhole Lane, Bolney, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH17 5NB.

Wiston Estate

Wiston Estate is a 6,000-acre estate located in the heart of the South Downs. It’s another vineyard with a huge family history. The land has been in the family since 1743! The vines were planted in 2006, and include classic varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Wiston Estate, Sussex

Wiston Estate specialises in production of sparkling wines, so if you’re a fan of bubbly, this is the Sussex wine tour for you!

Wine tours take place from April to October, and begin in the estate’s original 16-acre chalk vineyard, before heading inside to the ancient Wine Barn for a tasting session of English Sparkling wines.

Thanks for sharing, I went to a brewery tour, which has a vineyard to, it was intresting to see how it was all made 🙂

Very interesting and well done. I was offered a meal for two at the Artelia Vineyard, described as nestling in the South Downs, through the Daily Telegraph, not long ago but regrettably let the opportunity slip by. The Wiston Vineyard, near Washington, West Sussex is close to where my wife and I live on the edge of Worthing and could be of interest for a visit.

Thanks for the comment Sir Rupert! Hopefully you can make it to one or two vineyards this summer – we always find them really enjoyable days out!

Vine times: grand plans for wine tourism in Sussex

Brilliant tipples are not all the county’s rapidly developing wine scene has to offer, as vineyards add festivals, art exhibitions and cool places to stay

I t has the same chalky soil as the Champagne region and its wine has the same protected status – and often beats French fizz in blind tastings. Now Sussex has launched a plan to attract many more visitors to its 138 vineyards, aiming to increase the value of wine tourism from £25m today to £283m by 2040.

Sussex has 888 hectares of vineyards, or 25.5% of the British land under vine, second only to Kent at 29.6%. But according to the authors of the growth plan – the tourism development agency Sussex Modern and the Sussex Visitor Economy Initiative – there are 40,000 hectares of land suitable for grapes available, giving the county enormous growth potential.

It is not just about increasing the number or size of the vineyards, however. The plan, which was launched in parliament on 14 June, also aims to expand the number of vineyards that are open to the public. Currently just over a quarter have cellar door sales, tours and tastings, restaurants, accommodation or wedding licences.

Other development projects include a new Sussex wine festival; guided and self-guided wine tours of the region; a network of cycling and walking routes connecting vineyards; and one- to three-day itineraries centred around wine, food, art and landscape.

“Wine is an outstanding success story for Sussex. In the last few years, it has emerged as a world-class region for wine-producing and wine tourism,” says Nathaniel Hepburn, the chair of Sussex Modern. “Pairing vineyard tours and visits with other destinations and activities is a sure-fire way of making the most of what Sussex has to offer.”

In the meantime, here are six of the best Sussex vineyards that are already welcoming visitors.

EAST SUSSEX

For foodies: ridgeview.

Ridgeview

Ridgeview near Burgess Hill was established in 1995. Its Rows & Vine restaurant opened last autumn: a series of covered pavilions around a central bar with a raised, open-air terrace overlooking the vineyard and woodland, and gardens designed by Andy Sturgeon. It serves seasonal small plates and wine by the glass, bottle or flight; there are aperitivo nights on Fridays and roasts – served with sparkling red wine – on Sundays. The winery also hosts a music festival, Ridgefest , in August. The shop is open daily and tours start from £20 for a vineyard walk and tasting. Burgess Hill railway station is a 40-minute walk away.

For art lovers: Artelium

An exhibition at Artelium.

Also near Burgess Hill, Artelium brings together wine, art and nature. There are tours on Saturdays, tastings from Thursday to Sunday, and regular events such as tai chi among the vines and pizza nights. It has commissioned artworks for its wine bottles and the walls of the winery, and sculptures for the grounds. It also holds regular exhibitions – the summer exhibition focuses on the sculptor John Skelton (until 5 August) – and a twice-yearly makers’ market (next market 2 December). Plumpton railway station is a 20-minute walk away.

Family-friendly: Oastbrook Estate

The lakeside lodge at Oastbrook.

Oastbrook , near Bodiam Castle, is a newer winery, with the first vines planted in 2018. It has family-friendly accommodation – bell tents, a hobbit-style house and a lakeside lodge – and runs children’s tours of the vineyard, led by the owners’ teenage daughter (£8, ages five to 16). Parents are then free to join the new summer wine tastings (selected Saturdays, £20) or the vineyard tour and tasting (£30). The estate is four miles east of Robertsbridge railway station.

WEST SUSSEX

Stay the night: wiston estate.

The Pump House

The Wiston Estate has been in the Goring family since 1743, and the first vines were planted in 2006. It has a restaurant, Chalk, and runs a variety of tours and tastings, from an off-road bike tour and lunch to a “sundowner safari” and dinner. This month, it has opened its first accommodation, a renovated cottage called the Pump House . The cottage sleeps up to four people and two dogs, and all bookings include a bottle of Wiston Brut NV (from £660 for four nights). The estate is five miles north of Worthing, close to Findon.

Learn about wine: Bolney Wine Estate

Bolney

Established in 1972, Bolney was one of England’s first wine estates – and claims to be one of the most beautiful. It serves breakfast and lunch in its Eighteen Acre Cafe (plus dinner on Fridays and Saturdays), which has a balcony overlooking the vines, and runs popular cheese and wine tasting tours. The estate is five miles west of Haywards Heath. New this month is Wine Down Wednesdays , a series of mini masterclasses with a winemaker. First up: sparkling wine (£35, 19 July).

For wine sceptics: Ashling Park Estate

Ashling Park

Ashling Park , four miles from Chichester, has tours, tastings, a restaurant and lodges to stay in. And for those who aren’t huge fans of wine, it has a gin school , with hands-on classes (£160 for two people) where participants make two bottles of their own gin. It has also partnered with Southern eBike Rentals that will deliver push bikes or e-bikes to the vineyard, allowing guests to explore the nearby Kingley Vale nature reserve on two wheels, or cycle to Wittering beach or Chichester harbour.

Doing Things Right

Looking after the environment has always been a key part of Tinwood Estate’s role, and in 2010 we entered the Entry Level Stewardship scheme. As custodians of the land, every decision we make is because we are conscious of the effects it has on the environment.

We have planted wildflower meadows, new hedgerows and wildflowers amongst the vines to promote biodiversity on the farm. Our ethos is about working with nature rather than working against it. I hope you enjoy drinking our wine as much as we enjoy making it…

The small family-run operation's "charm" is showcased in its wine tours and the pop-up restaurant is a "lovely touch". Tinwood Estate, West Sussex

Tinwood Estate

There's plenty of attractions for wine aficionados at the Tinwood Estate. On the edge of the South Downs near Chichester, visitors can book vineyard tours, tastings and afternoon teas. There's a "small-plates restaurant" open during the day, said The Times . One of the big highlights here are the three luxury vineyard lodges "each decorated in beautiful materials, with a terrace for better views of those ripening grapes" as well as a barrel sauna and a hot tub". The estate first started planting in 2007 and "boasts 110 acres of land under vine, where it largely produces Blanc de Blancs, Brut and English Sparkling Rose", said Square Meal .  tinwoodestate.com

Oxney Organic Estate, East Sussex

Oxney Organic Estate

Near Rye in East Sussex, the Oxney Organic Estate makes “delectable chardonnays and fizz”, said The Times . As the name suggests, this 35-acre vineyard is said to be the "largest single-estate" maker of organic English wines, with wine tours every Saturday from April to November. And on a sunny day, you'll be able to take in the beautiful country views on an idyllic picnic lunch after your tour. Best of all, "you can sleep it off" in the estate's converted barn, shepherd's hut or farmhouse cottage. oxneyestate.com

Ashling Park Estate, West Sussex

Ashling Park Estate in West Sussex

Ashling Park is a vineyard and winery – and "what wine it is", said Neil Davey on TheWeek.com . But it also offers a gin school, an excellent restaurant and some delightful luxury lodges. The visitor centre and shop is very good and the tour is informative. In 2023 Ashling Park won gold for its eponymous rosé at the Wine GB Awards. It's also a Decanter Gold Medal winner. ashlingpark.co.uk

Ridgeview Wine Estate, East Sussex

Ridgeview Wine Estate in East Sussex

Looking out of the tasting room window at Ridgeview Wine Estate, the inspiration for the name is clear. Beyond the vines stretching out across the valley, the landscape rises towards the chalk escarpment of the South Downs, which divides the vineyard from Brighton and the sea. As "one of England's most prestigious producers", said the Daily Mail , Ridgeview offers guided tours, relaxed wine tastings, or all-day dining at The Rows & Vine restaurant. ridgeview.co.uk

Tillingham Winery, East Sussex

Explore the vineyards at Tillingham winery

Less than a 15-minute drive from the historic town of Rye you'll find Tillingham Winery, "one of the most exciting wine-makers in Britain," said The Times , which is "known for natural, non-intervention wines plus fermentation in earthenware qvevri jars". Book onto one of the vineyard tours in advance and enjoy the "country life" that's incorporated into the surroundings, said Kaye O'Doherty on TheWeek.com . As well as tours and tastings, Tillingham also offers 11 double rooms in a former hop barn and a restaurant with vistas over the Sussex countryside. Chef Brendan Eades, who scooped a Michelin Green Star in 2022, cooks up an exceptional, pescatarian feast with fish caught daily from Rye Harbour. tillingham.com

Rathfinny Wine Estate, East Sussex

Rathfinny Wine Estate in East Sussex

Here "each bottling is supposed to reflect the unpredictable nature of the British summer season", said Elite Traveler . "Three miles from where the rolling hills of the South Downs give way to the coast" the 600-acre estate is home to The Flint Barns, which has 10 en-suite bedrooms, and the Tasting Room and Flint Barns Dining Room restaurants. Rathfinny's Cellar Door shop is open daily for drop-in wine tastings and shopping, while the estate also offers seasonal vineyard tours and tastings all year round. rathfinnyestate.com

Chapel Down, Kent

Chapel Down Vineyard

On the chalky North Downs, Chapel Down is perhaps "the most well-known wine producer in the UK", said Time Out . The guided tour is "a lot of fun" and it helps that "the wine is great, too", with Flint Dry a bestseller. Chapel Down has won numerous awards throughout the years and its Classic NV Brut is one of the "most accessible" English sparkling wines – "both from a price point and national availability", said Great British Wine . As well as tours Chapel Down also hosts experiences and visitors can book a table at its restaurant, The Swan Wine Kitchen. chapeldown.com

Biddenden Vineyards, Kent

Rows of grapevines climbing a slope

The county's "oldest family-run vineyard", Biddenden produces "top-notch white, rosé, red and sparkling wines", said Country Living , from 11 grape varieties. All vine work is still carried out by hand. Vineyard tours, self-guided tours, meet-the-winemaker tours and picnics are available to book. Stay a little longer in a romantic cottage with a wood-fired hot tub. biddendenvineyards.com

Langham Wine Estate, Dorset

Langham Wine Estate

At this environmentally conscious vineyard in the heart of the West Country, they take a "low-intervention approach to wine making, from grape growing to wine production", said Square Meal . English sparkling is the "brand's main forte" which you can sample on a guided tour and tasting. And if an afternoon of wine tasting really takes it out of you, a sumptuous collection of lunches and afternoon teas are available in the vineyard café. With wines made solely from the classical champagne grape varieties of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, this is high-quality fare – be sure not to miss the Rosé NV, which is packed full of gorgeous berry flavours. langhamwine.co.uk

Darts Farm's Pebblebed Vineyard, Devon

Darts Farm’s Pebblebed Vineyard

Visitors can book tours and tastings at Darts Farm's 18-acre Pebblebed Vineyard and traditional winery, in the village of Clyst St George in east Devon. The vineyards and winery are located on their farm and "the team are proud" said Luxury Lifestyle magazine, "to be one of very few single-estate producers" in the country, with the vineyard and winery in one place and wines made from their own grapes. dartsfarm.co.uk

Castlewood Vineyard, Devon

Castlewood Vineyard in Axe Valley, Devon

If you're seeking "fizz and festivals" look no further than Castlewood Vineyard in Devon, said Condé Nast Traveller . Its story began in 2006 on a south-facing Devon hillside overlooking the River Axe with owner Rob Corbett planting his vines by hand. Now the vineyard offers private tours and a June festival, held to celebrate the release of the latest vintage. If you stay in one of the Grade-II listed cottages you'll be "surrounded by pretty gardens and countryside". Equally, if you're there for just a day the steep slopes of the vineyard offer "amazing views of the Axe Valley". castlewoodvineyard.co.uk

Camel Valley, Cornwall

Camel Valley Winery

Made up of 82 acres of rolling hills bathed in southerly sunshine, Camel Valley is Cornwall's largest vineyard, and was "the first English wine producer to be granted a royal warrant", said Muddy Stilettos . Visitors can join a number of tours and tastings, or sit on a stone-clad terrace, sipping Pinot Noir Rosé Brut as they watch the sun set over vineyards that slope down to the River Camel as it snakes from Bodmin Moor to Padstow. And it's "handy for non-driving access", being on the Camel Trail cycle route. camelvalley.com

Three Choirs Vineyards, Gloucestershire

Three Choirs Vineyards

One of England's oldest vineyards, in 2023 Three Choirs celebrated 50 years since the first vines were planted on the estate in Newent, Gloucestershire. It now boasts 75 acres of vines and currently produces around 250,000 bottles of wine a year. Facilities and experiences include The Brasserie restaurant, Cellar Door shop, plus wine tastings and vineyard tours. A "pretty vineyard" with "fabulous views", there's even accommodation on site, said The Hotel Guru . The lodges and rooms are "smart and spacious" with "hints of luxury". three-choirs-vineyards.co.uk

Woodchester Valley Vineyard, Gloucestershire

Woodchester Valley Vineyard

This south Cotswolds vineyard is "putting Gloucestershire on the map as a world-class wine destination", said Muddy Stilettos . Set in the Stroud valleys, "family-run boutique winery" Woodchester Valley has been producing world-class white, rosé and sparkling wines since 2016 and visitors can book tours, tastings or enjoy a "sip-and-stay experience with a difference". In 2023 its vintage Pinot Gris "beat Italian rivals", said The Times , to win gold at the Global Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio Masters. woodchestervalleyvineyard.co.uk

Gwinllan Conwy Vineyard, Conwy

Gwinllan Conwy Vineyard

There are vineyards "blossoming" all across Wales, said Natasha Lovell-Smith on Great British Food Awards . And one of the most popular is Gwinllan Conwy, which has received multiple national and international awards. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Snowdonia Mountain Range, the "success" of this vineyard is "underpinned by the microclimate" of north Wales, which "pairs resemblance" to the climate of New Zealand. Thanks to its proximity to the sea, this means the vineyard "experiences mild winters allowing the vines to develop earlier". This beautiful vineyard offers tours and wine tasting experiences throughout the year and at the online shop you can buy Welsh artisan produce or Welsh hampers, as well as wine. gwinllanconwy.co.uk

Llanerch Vineyard, Glamorgan

Llanerch Vineyard in Pontyclun, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales

Tucked into the Welsh countryside, yet only 20 minutes from Cardiff, Llanerch Vineyard offers "a drop of romance", said Kerry Walker in The Daily Telegraph . While the vineyard itself is centred on a "whitewashed farmhouse" from 1851 and pulls off the "delicate act of combining original features", the hotel rooms are "bright and contemporary". Beyond the hotel and wine, is the "perkily turreted Neo-Gothic" Hensol Castle which is only a 15-minute walk away. But where Llanerch really "shines" is its restaurant which overlooks the vineyard and offers "great" food and "bang-on" service. You may "come for a wine tour" but you'll "stay for the imaginative locally sourced food". llanerch.co.uk

Ryedale Vineyards, North Yorkshire

Ryedale Vineyards in North Yorkshire

The most northerly vineyard in Britain, Ryedale offers more than wine – it also makes cider from the estate's orchards. Voted one of the best vineyards to visit and tour in England, it offers an "informal, humorous and informative guided tour". For those wanting to stay, Ryedale has two "cosy en suite rooms in the farmhouse", said The Guardian , and the "slap-up breakfast" is the "perfect way to start a day" exploring the surrounding North Yorkshire wolds. ryedalevineyards.co.uk
