NORTHERN EUROPE CRUISES

Come aboard one of our MSC Northern Europe cruises and uncover the treasures that can be found in the British Isles, Scandinavian coasts or Baltic seas and experience Europe like you have always imagined it. From bustling cities like Copenhagen, Tallin or Hamburg , to the beautiful fjords or the picturesque coasts, Northern European cruises have it all. Northern Europe is distinctly different from any other part of the continent. This is because its ancient settlements combine the essence of their culture with the modern features of today. Scandinavian cruises will show you beautiful locations such as Stockholm , Bergen or Oslo . You will be able to visit gorgeous buildings such as the Akershus Fortress or take a stroll around Frogner Park, and we cannot forget the avant-garde building of the Oslo Opera House, located on the harbor.

A Nordic cruise can take you to the bustling city of Copenhagen, with the famous Little Mermaid statue, or to Stockholm, home of the Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are a nature-lover, then this is the cruise for you: MSC Baltic cruises will show you the best of the northern coasts, including the stunning Norwegian fjords, the rugged North Atlantic islands such as Svalbard, or experience a unique and breathtaking Northern Lights cruise. Discover also our Artic cruises and get a rare opportunity to visit Iceland and Greenland. Whether you are planning a trip with friends or family or going on a couple’s getaway, treat yourself to a Baltic cruise in 2024 or a Scandinavian cruise in 2024 and see Europe from a new perspective.

Northern Europe Countries

Have you dreamed of seeing the Norwegian fjords in real life? Are you intrigued by the volcanic wonders of Iceland? Choose a Scandinavian cruise and travel to Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Iceland and discover how these countries mix modern lifestyles with centuries of history and culture. You will be able to not only learn about it but experience it up close during trips and excursions, either to capital cities like Oslo, Stockholm or Reykjavik, but also to smaller towns such as Trondheim in Norway, or Akureyri in Iceland. No matter where you’d like to go in Northern Europe, we can take you there. Or choose an MSC Northern Europe cruise and experience all the North Atlantic has to offer: from France (La Rochelle) and the United Kingdom (Southampton or Edinburgh) all the way to Greenland (Oaqortoq, Nuuk or Ilulissat), passing through the Baltic Sea to Estonia (Tallin) or Finland (Helsinki, Hamina/Kotka), among many others.

How well do you know the United Kingdom? If you need a plan for your 2024 vacation, there are many hidden treasures within Great Britain and Ireland, the only thing you need to do is jump on an MSC cruise around the UK and discover these local attractions. The ports for the British Isles cruises act as gateways to other cities and you can even book a Norway fjords cruise or other Norway cruises in 2024. For starters, you could begin your cruise from Southampton, a port city that has always been a bright spot for cultural exchange. Why not take a stroll down its medieval town walls? During a stop at South Queensferry in Edinburgh, marvel at the beauty of this city. Visit the castle for a look at the Scottish crown jewels or amble down the Royal Mile for a bit of shopping or a cup of tea. If you are lucky, you might get to experience –or hear—the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Art Festival or the International Book Festival. If you wish for a bit of luck on the Emerald Isle, you can stop off at the ports in Cork or Ringaskiddy in the Republic of Ireland. Discover so much more with a cruise around the British Isles in the summer!

Norway Cruises

Did you know that the Vikings main mode of transportation was a ship? They used them to go from one fjord to another. You can do the same with an MSC Norwegian fjords cruise that will show you some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Discover two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Geirangerfjord (Hellesylt) and the Nærøyfjord (Flaam), a stunning landscape that you will only be able to see in Norway, so hop on an MSC fjord cruise and enjoy these natural wonders, whether you are taking a trip with friends, a family vacation or going on a couple’s getaway. You will be able to visit fjords such as Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord and soak up the natural beauty of these formations. Another prime example of incredible natural formations you can enjoy in Norway is the enormous Briksdal Glacier, near Olden’s port. There you can visit the picturesque houses or go for a hike around the Jostedalsbreen National Park. You can visit even more locations during an MSC Norway cruise such as: Maloy, Stavanger or Alesund in the South; and Tromso, Alta in the far North. Find the perfect Norwegian cruise for your next vacation with MSC cruises!

Baltic Cruises

Are you intrigued by the wonders of the Baltic Sea? Discover them with an MSC Baltic cruise this 2024 and spend your summer exploring Sweden, Finland, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and much more. Tallin is the capital city of Estonia. There you can stroll down its cobbled streets, explore its medieval walls, Gothic churches, squares and more. You can also book an MSC cruise excursion to visit the Toompea Castle and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, two of the city’s most impressive buildings. Other capital cities included in an MSC Baltic cruise are Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen or Helsinki, an up-and-coming destination where you can explore Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If UNESCO World Heritage Sites do intrigue you, or you simply appreciate history and culture, choose a Baltic cruise and enjoy the beauty of Visby, on the island of Gotland. You will be charmed by Visby’s botanical gardens and its beautiful medieval town center. Don’t forget to visit the 12th century St. Mary’s Cathedral. There is much more to see and more hidden gems to discover in Northern Europe! What are you waiting for?

Northern Europe ports

MSC offers a wide range of docking points for your Northern European cruise. Some are embarkation points and others are ports of call, so you can pick the one that will best suit you to start from, and then which ones you will want to visit during your vacation. Start your trip in the south of the UK, with cruises from Southampton and enjoy your MSC Baltic, Fjords or European Atlantic cruises. We also stop at ports in Ireland, such as Cork, or in the Netherlands, for example in Rotterdam, from where we also organize shorter cruises. If you’d prefer to begin your adventure elsewhere, there are ports located across Northern Europe, so you could get your trip started in France, choosing a cruise from Le Havre port, which is near cities such as Paris, Cherbourg or in the Netherlands, opting for a cruise from near Amsterdam. You could also hop aboard your cruise in German ports such as Hamburg or Kiel (near Lübeck) or Warnemünde. There are many other different options spread across the Atlantic such as Rotterdam or Copenhagen. Choose MSC Cruises, and book and unforgettable experience exploring the north of Europe.

CRUISES FROM SOUTHAMPTON Are you ready for a new adventure from the UK? Southampton’s bustling port is the perfect place from where you can discover the beauty of the North Atlantic. Hop onto an MSC cruise ship and explore Northern Europe gems in France, the Netherlands, Norway or Denmark. Find the right itinerary for your trip and explore cities like Bruges, Helsinki or Stockholm, among others. Come aboard a Northern European cruise at Southampton and enjoy yourself. Once aboard, you’ll be able to visit many European cities. When stopping in Copenhagen, you may book an excursion from those available. You can do the same at ports in Germany, the Netherlands or France.

COPENHAGEN CRUISE Begin your MSC Northern Europe cruise in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. This lively city is known for its colorful houses, art and cuisine. Did you know Copenhagen has Michelin-star restaurants? You can discover them during your visit while the cruise ship is docked there. Take a stroll and enjoy the sights of the Øresund strait, or book MSC excursions to see the impressive Christiansborg Palace. Enjoy a scenic river cruise from MSC or enjoy the exciting Tivoli Gardens, the perfect place to spend an afternoon with family or friends. Hop aboard an MSC Baltic cruise at Copenhagen and discover other port cities in Estonia, Sweden and Finland.

REYKJAVIK CRUISE Reykjavik is known as the city of spas. With an Iceland cruise, you can marvel at its craters, volcanos, and caves. The piers along the shore host a variety of shops, live music clubs and bars and cafés. Take a stroll up to Lækjartorg to admire the Sófar, also known as the Sun Voyager, a huge modern steel sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason. It represents an old Viking vessel, with the bow of the ship pointing north. As you will see during your MSC cruise of Northern Europe, Iceland is full of geothermal energy, hot springs, spas and gorgeous skies. Summer is the best season to enjoy a spectacular sunset and admire Reykjavik in the waters of its bay.

Where do you go on a Scandinavian cruise?

MSC Northern Europe cruises branch off into different areas. You can start further north on the Scandinavian Peninsula and choose a cruise to visit Iceland, Greenland or Norway, where you will be able to see the majestic fjords. And then there is the Baltic Sea, located between mainland Europe and Scandinavian and Jutland Peninsulas. On the west, the countries you can visit there are Sweden and Denmark, and on the east, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Explore the Scandinavian Peninsula, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea with MSC and discover its hidden gems on your next vacation. What are you waiting for?

Can you cruise to Iceland?

Our Northern Europe cruises have stops at Icelandic ports such as Reykjavik and Akureyri, where you can dock and experience the beauty of this unique country. When you set sail for your Iceland stopover and first dock in Reykjavik, don’t miss an excursion to Þingvellir National Park where you can see Iceland’s largest lake or head southeast on the island and to find Strokkur, the only regularly erupting geyser. In Akureyri, you can choose excursions such as Godafoss, a waterfall approximately 40 feet tall, the pseudo-craters of Skutustaðir, and Dimmurborgir, an incredible labyrinth of lava. From waterfalls to craters and geysers, it has something for everyone. Explore beyond Scandinavia with an Iceland stopover on an MSC cruise!

How much does a Baltic cruise cost?

There’s a Baltic cruise waiting for you, independently of your budget. MSC cruises offer a wide range and selection of experiences, which will determine the overall price. Factors to consider are different cabin types and accommodation preferences, the excursions you book, as well as the numerous on-board services and experiences we offer. The earlier you book your cruise, the better the price you will find. Although, you can also take advantage of our special promotions available at different times throughout the year. You can also come across a bargain through our flash sales and last-minute deals. What are you waiting for?

Can you see the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise?

The Arctic viewing season for the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise is from late September to late March or early April. However, the best months to view the Northern Lights are December through March, when skies are darkest due to the darker winter days and the higher probability of clear skies. Keep in mind that while it is possible to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis in places like southern Finland, you will have a much better chance if you choose a cruise that travels farther north into Scandinavia.

What is the best time to go on a Baltic cruise?

The Baltic Sea is characterized by seasonality. That is to say there is a large difference in the weather depending on the month. Winters are long, cold and dark, while summers are short and relatively warm. Although, you can still experience some weather changes and spots of showers on a Baltic cruise in the summer. Because the Baltic Sea is located between the cooler winds of the North Atlantic and the harsher continental European climate, conditions and temperatures can vary greatly throughout the year. This means summers can be warm and relatively dry, with some chances of precipitation. MSC cruises go to the Baltics when the weather is best, although you should take into consideration how variable the conditions can be when packing your suitcases. Discover a unique part of Europe with MSC and find your Baltic cruise for the summer!

What do you wear on a Baltic cruise?

The best time to go on a Baltic cruise is in the late spring or summer, seasons when the temperatures range between 53ºF and 72ºF. With such a temperature range as that, you will be able to wear anything from shorts and a T-shirt to jeans with a hoodie or windbreaker. We recommend you choose a varied wardrobe and add plenty of layers to your outfits for your cruise, just in case. Also, even though the precipitation rates are lower in May, June and July, we would still advise you to pack a rain jacket along with you, because you might encounter light showers during your cruise. Another detail you might want to consider that the Baltic States experience long daylight hours, especially during the months of May, June, July and August. So, remember to pack your sleep mask if you think you’ll need it. Go on an incredible adventure with an MSC Baltic cruise.

Top Northern Europe FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Northern Europe?

Northern Europe is enchanting at any time of year, but May to September is the best period. You’ll enjoy long, bright days and almost 24 hours of daylight in June. Summer for the locals is a time of festivals, exploring the countryside, and enjoying al-fresco dining.

How long are typical itineraries?

Our Northern Europe itineraries vary from seven to 14 nights, with a vast range of choices, whether you’re looking for a week in the Norwegian fjords or a longer itinerary that explores the capitals of the Baltic. You can even sail from Southampton, England deep into the Arctic Circle, to Norway’s Nordkapp.

Are there any specific visa requirements for cruising to countries in Northern Europe?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What kind of weather can be expected during a Northern Europe cruise?

You can expect all kinds of summer weather, from bright sunshine to occasional mist, rain, and drizzle. Evenings can be cool. Come prepared for all eventualities, with light layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes.

What types of excursions are available?

We offer excursions for a range of interests, from guided hikes to scenic boat rides, in-depth visits to castles and museums, and immersive explorations of local food and drink. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, an individual, a family, or a group of friends, you’ll find a fantastic range of cultural and experiential activities in every port.

Are there any cultural or language tips I should know before cruising to Northern Europe?

On your travels in Northern Europe, you will experience a number of different cultures, currencies, cuisines, and languages. It’s important, and fun, to acknowledge these differences and learn a little about the historical events that have shaped each destination. English is widely spoken in Scandinavian countries, especially in the service industry, although it’s always appreciated if you learn a few words of the local language.

Prepare to encounter a number of different currencies on your travels; Finland, Estonia, and the Republic of Ireland use the Euro, but other countries have their own currencies. U.S. dollars are not necessarily accepted, although credit cards are widely used, and there are plenty of ATMs.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Northern Europe

Scandinavia is filled with countries that constantly rank as having the happiest citizens, so why not visit their hotspots and see if you wind up smiling more? The countries of Northern Europe are known for having long summer days where the sun seems to never set, but then in the winter it sometimes feels as if the sun will never rise. These extremes create an interesting culture and historical experience. Featured below are a few of the best ways to spend your time cruising through Northern Europe:

Hermitage in St. Petersburg

  • Catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis. On clear evenings, especially in September and March, this dazzling natural phenomenon will take your breath away.
  • See major works of art in the truly royal setting of a gilded palace at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The Hermitage is located in the Winter Palace of Russia’s monarchs and includes Catherine the Great’s expansive art collection.

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen

  • Be a kid again by attending Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. This site is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and was the inspiration for Disneyland. Also in Denmark is Legoland, an amusement park devoted to the popular toy bricks.
  • Go skiing. Norway is littered with ski resorts and slopes that served as training grounds for many Olympians. Norway has the most Winter Olympic medals for a reason, and they intend to keep it that way.

Grimm Brothers Statue

  • Warm up at a thermal pool in Iceland. Spas have popped up throughout Iceland, allowing people to bath in the naturally warm water of the geothermal springs. This is a popular way to spend a day in Iceland.
  • Celebrate fairytales in Denmark, home to Hans Christian Andersen, author of The Little Mermaid , The Ugly Duckling and more. In nearby Germany you can travel the fairytale route from Hanau to Bremen, lined with attractions dedicated to the Brothers Grimm.

Guide to Cruises to Northern Europe

Why cruise northern europe.

Here are   8 reasons   you should cruise Northern Europe:

  •   Northern Europe offers year-round cruising with two distinct attractions: the Northern Lights and Midnight Sun.
  •   Most places of interest are relatively close to the port.
  •   Northern Europe is traditionally expensive, but cruising makes it affordable.
  •   Most local people speak English.
  •   Much of the Fjords scenery is visible from the ship.
  •   Norwegian fjords are all about the breathtaking scenery.
  •   There are almost 24 hours of daylight during the peak of summer.
  •   Northern Europe is traditionally safe and trouble-free with little crime, very good health services and high living standards.

Most cruise lines alternate between the Norwegian fjords and the Baltic region. Historically these itineraries have been more popular with an older crowd, but families can enjoy them as well as there are lots of fun activities for children.

Where is Northern Europe?

The Northern Europe region combines all countries that are north of Germany: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. We are only focusing on the fjords & Norway on this page.

The Norwegian coastline stretches for 2,735 km (1,700 miles) with the most breathtaking features being the fjords which are up to 160km (100miles) long.

Most of the region lies beyond the Arctic Circle and appeals to travellers seeking the Northern Lights in winter and the Midnight Sun in high summer. The Norwegian landscape sees dramatic changes with the seasons and some of the most photogenic views are to be enjoyed directly from the ship, without the need to step ashore.

Most of the world's most northerly features can be experienced on a cruise beyond the Arctic Circle, especially in Alta, Honningsvåg or Tromsø.

The steep and uneven coastal mountains and extensive fjords make any land-based experience a proper expedition, costly and time-consuming. Most of the Norwegian coastline is not easily accessible by car - you either have to fly in a small plane or take a ferry to access these remote areas.

Cruising makes visiting Norway a breeze, it is a much more realistic and cost-effective option for any traveller.

Northern europe history and culture.

Northern Europe, has had an interesting ride through history, from Vikings to social democrats, through wars, treaties and peace. The Nordic nations have been inhabited from some 120,000 years ago.

Around 1800 BC, the Norsemen began fashioning tools, jewellery and finely crafted works of art in bronze and traded them as far as Crete and Mycenae.

A thousand years later, the legend of the Vikings was born. With a growing population that drove shrinking in the available agricultural land, the Norsemen were under pressure to find new quality land. In 780 they landed on the coast of the British Isles. The first Viking raid only happened 13 years later, on St Cuthbert's monastery on the island of Lindisfarne in 793.

For 1,200 years, the Norsemen were swinging between war, invasion and treaties with their neighbouring countries, until the second world war.

After the war, Northern Europe had to rebuild and decide what long term path they would take. It is where Social Democracy was chosen as a way forward. Even if they kept their monarchs, the nations' standards were all about equality, free education, fair working conditions, comfortable pensions and generous welfare for the unemployed.

Today Northern Europe is a perfect balance between modernism and their proud Viking heritage.

To truly grasp this is to visit any of the museums in the smaller towns, deep inside a fjord, then take a small wooden fishing boat and spend half of the day fishing looking at the gigantic and breathtaking surrounding scenery, all whilst day-dreaming about battles.

Best Time to Cruise to Northern Europe?

The best time to see the Northern Lights is between September and March and if you're after the Norwegian Fjords aim for between May and August.

Northern Europe has become a year-round cruise destination. For those seeking a trip beyond the Arctic Circle in search of the Northern Lights, the winter days are relatively short and the temperatures do not rise above freezing. Most expedition cruises operators will provide Arctic clothing and footwear as part of the cruise package.

The best time to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) is between September and March , as the most brilliant displays occur both in a cold and dark environment.

As the Northern Lights are a phenomenon that is not completely understood, you can only predict the occurrence of the Aurora Borealis about two hours before it happens. But don't worry, the captain will be calling you to go out on deck to admire them when they occur during your cruise.

The best time to see the Norwegian Fjords is between May and August . The summer months are magical. With almost 24 hours of daylight, it is the perfect time to cruise the mirror-calm water in this area.

One of the best experiences is to sit on the deck, taking a mid-night sunbath whilst watching the ribbons of waterfalls tumbling over sheer cliffs and sipping a glass of bubbles.

The summer temperatures are similar to those in the rest of Northern Europe - beautiful and sunny.

Ålesund and Bergen, are recognised as two of the rainiest cities in the world, so don't forget a jacket. If you travel to the Lofoten Islands, the sea can be very rough and windy, especially in spring and winter.

Major Ports of Departure in Northern Europe

Most Caribbean cruises will leave from these 8 ports:

Copenhagen, Denmark

While this 850-year-old city retains its historical looks, Denmark's capital city is focused on innovation. Mixing the old town's cobblestone, with craft and design studios and Michelin Star restaurants. Kastrup Airport (CPH) is 10km (6.3 miles) from the Cruise Terminal.

Kiel, Germany

Some locals will admit that the city centre of Kiel, is grottenhässlich (ugly as sin). Unfortunately, the centre was destroyed during WWII by the allies looking to target U-boats. The grand harbour and the city's museums should be the focus of your visits. Most travellers will fly into Hamburg (HAM) an hour's transfer away.

Oslo, Norway

Europe's fastest-growing capital, Oslo is surrounded by the sea and mountains. It is a fabulous city for nature lovers, as the city is fringed with forests, hills and lakes. Oslo International Airport (OSL) is 54km (35 miles) north-east of the cruise terminal.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen, set on a very picturesque Norwegian coastal landscape of mountains and Fjords, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Since the Middle Ages, when it was Norway's capital city, Bergen has been the centre of Northern Europe's seafaring trade. Bergen Flesland Airport (BGO) is 13km (9 miles) South of the cruise terminal.

Amsterdam, Holland

One of the most popular cities in Europe, Amsterdam encapsulates fairy-tale magic in so many ways. From the centuries-old bruin cafés (traditional pubs) to the boat-filled canals. Schiphol Airport (AMS) is 24km (15 miles) from the Cruise Terminal. +- 20 minutes by train.

Hamburg, Germany

The locals will tell you - Hamburg is one of the coolest cities in the world. The biggest port in Germany, Hamburg has always been the centre of German & European trade, and to this day, it is the wealthiest city in Germany. The main airport is Hamburg International (HAM) about 24km (15 miles) north of the Cruise Terminal.

What to Wear on a Northern Europe Cruise?

There are two very distinct packing lists on a Northern Europe Cruise.

If you need to   pack for a Northern Lights Cruise , have a base layer, winter shoes, a windproof winter jacket, wool accessories and a camera.

If you need to pack for a   Summer in Northern Europe , you would pack the same as for any Summer cruise - backpack, light clothing, hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, hiking boots and swimwear.

Top Excursions in Northern Europe

Very few regions offer as much diversity as a Northern Europe cruise. Most ports offer great tours within the city and surrounding areas, as well as sightseeing excursions to the many wonders and breathtaking scenery.

Some destinations will offer trips to nearby smaller fjords or must-see viewpoints. A "not-to-be-missed" in Stavanger is the trip along the Lyserfjord to view the dramatic 600m high Pulpit Rock.

Beyond the Arctic Circle, a typical excursion from Alta and Narvik is to visit a settlement of traditional Sami People of Finnish Lapland. Some excursions will even offer a night cuddled in reindeer skins, staying in an ice hotel.

Here is a list of some of the most popular excursions in Northern Europe, by City:

Honningsvåg

Who will enjoy a cruise in northern europe.

Nature lovers will enjoy the wildlife and breathtaking vistas. Adventure seekers are not disappointed by the Northern Lights and the countless opportunities to do reindeer or dog sledging, as well as skiing and snowmobiling.

Elderly travellers tend to be attracted by the enjoyable views of the fjords, coast and mountains without leaving the ship. Younger travellers appreciate walking, kayaking, hiking and cycling in some of the ports of call, especially Åndalsnes, Bergen or Stavanger.

It may not come as a surprise, but amongst the cruising fraternity, a trip around the Norwegian fjords is high on any bucket list. The breathtaking scenery, culture and weather attracts many first-time cruisers.

Northern Europe as with the Mediterranean, attracts many that have reservations about cruising, because of the high number of ports in any given itinerary. The fact that you are constantly surrounded by land makes it more appealing.

You can ask many cruisers in Europe about their initial holiday at sea, and in many cases, it will be the fjords of Northern Europe.

In 7 to 10 days you can grasp what cruising in the North is all about, which appeals to those who are wishing to take a shorter trip to test the waters or simply those who are looking for a shorter holiday.

A cruise will appeal to many seasoned photographers, as you don't need to leave the ship to capture some unbelievable coastal landscape.

Most ports of call are directly on the water or extremely close to the port, similar to Alaska. This appeals to those who are looking for days packed with sightseeing and pre-Covid independent trips into the towns.

You will find museums on Vikings, life in the Arctic and the local sea trade in every port.

What Main Ports of Call Do Cruise Ships Visit in Northern Europe

For a truly spectacular experience, the fjords' scenery is best viewed from the sea. One of the most memorable experiences is cruising through the inner passages between Ålesund and Narvik.   The two most popular sights are probably the Geirangerfjord and the Hardangerfjord near Bergen . Smaller vessels are able to enter some of the tiny, yet equally scenic fjords, such as Lustrafjord and Trollfjord.

There are over 20 popular ports of call in the Norwegian Fjords to which you can cruise:

'You're not fighting the crowds' in Europe when you visit on a river cruise

north europe cruise

Europe has no shortage of marquee tourist hot spots , but Diamond Meadows’ first river cruise there didn’t include them.

The 28-year-old graduate student took a cruise along the Rhine and Moselle rivers that took her to cities like Koblenz and Trier in Germany (she supplemented the sailing with train travel around Austria, Switzerland and elsewhere).

Meadows was traveling with her mom and her mom’s boss, who uses a wheelchair. The group chose the CroisiEurope Cruises sailing for the ease of sailing with a mobility device . But she discovered other upsides.

“It takes you exactly into the heart of the city,” said Meadows, who is based in Tennessee. Their roughly 160-guest vessel offered convenient drop-offs in smaller destinations, allowing them “to access so much more.”

Many European destinations were packed with tourists last summer . But river cruises in the continent can offer a more laid-back way to travel with small ships visiting a mix of popular and less-crowded ports.

Are river cruises better than ocean cruises?

Jen Campbell Boles, founder of the travel agency Explore More Family Travel, said that while cruising in general is a “great value for seeing Europe,” river sailings are particularly immersive. “One quote we always use in the travel industry is, ‘Ocean cruise liners take you to the destination, river cruises take us through the destination,’” she said.

Passengers visit not only major cities but also quaint villages and often disembark within walking distance of attractions. When they are done exploring, they return to a ship with an average of 150 guests.

“It's more intimate, it's cozier,” said Campbell Boles. “You're not fighting the crowds, obviously.”

That was part of the draw for Jim Jones, 57, who took Avalon Waterways river cruises with his wife in 2011 and 2014.

“The smaller cities were an attraction,” said Jones, who is based in Phoenix and works for a software company. He enjoyed visiting Avignon in the south of France, for example, which was once the seat of the papacy . “I’m a total history geek,” he said. On their first cruise, he recalled, “just about every town” they visited had a farmers’ market, allowing them to sample local food.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

Unlike ocean cruise ships, with their large casinos and plentiful bars, onboard “it was very relaxed and a much slower pace.”

River cruise vessels tend to have “less bells and whistles,” Campbell Boles said (though she added that guests get a more personalized experience as a result of their small size).

Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Travelmation, echoed that. He said the cruises are less about the ship than where it’s going. “This is truly an experience about itineraries.”

Are European river cruises cheaper than land-based trips?

While travelers can find land-based accommodations that are less expensive than river cruises, there are other factors to consider.

River cruises tend to bundle more costs, such as alcohol in the fare, than a mainstream ocean cruise line, Duckworth said (though exact policies vary by line). At least one excursion per day is typically included, as well, Campbell Boles added.

She said demand for Europe is still “through the roof” and land-based pricing is particularly high. “Even if you're staying in the highest category stateroom or suite, you're spending less than an equivalent hotel,” she said.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise? Here's why these travelers splurged.

Transportation from one destination to another is also built into a river cruise, whereas travelers might have to take a train or make other arrangements to visit a mix of places. “I mean that really adds up in Europe, so this is a great way to see a lot more variety,” Campbell Boles said.

Passengers can also add pre- and post-cruise stays, allowing them to “get the best of both worlds.”

“What we say is that a river cruise oftentimes can be a premium product,” added Duckworth. “But for what you're experiencing – the comfort, the (lower) stress, the luxurious experience on board – we find it to be actually the best value through Europe from our experience.”

Are European river cruises kid-friendly?

Since river cruises require a certain amount of free time – most are at least seven days long – they have tended to be popular with older guests, according to Duckworth.

But in the past couple of years, he has noticed more multigenerational travel in the sector. “We're seeing grandparents bring their grandkids, we're seeing young professionals go on a river in Europe for the first time,” Duckworth said.

Some operators have offerings that are particularly well-suited to younger guests. Adventures by Disney offers river cruises with AmaWaterways, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has a Generations Collection .

How long should I go on a cruise?: How long and short cruises compare

Even if programming is curated with kids in mind, though, Duckworth cautioned that river cruise vessels don’t offer the same breadth of amenities as large ocean ships. “If your kids want to go to a waterpark and they want to go on a FlowRider and they want to play putt-putt all day, there are great lines for you, but a European river cruise is probably not one of them currently,” he said.

Some lines also don’t allow kids or have varying age requirements, so it’s important to do some research beforehand.

For those going for the first time, Campbell Boles suggested starting with a cruise on the Danube or Rhine since they are “kind of the most iconic.”

“I mean, it’s Europe,” she added. “It’s going to be great no matter what river you go on.”

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.,  (May 3, 2024) – Astrotourism is top of mind for travelers making special trips for phenomenal experiences in the sky—and with the recent “take-your-breath-away” total solar eclipse, thousands of cruisers onboard Emerald Princess and Discovery Princess off the coast of Mexico caught a glimpse of the astounding total darkness event.

The next, not-to-be-missed total solar eclipse takes place on August 12, 2026, and once again a Princess cruise ship will be perfectly positioned, this time in northern Spain, to witness this bucket list event - two minutes and 18 seconds of totality. The 3,660-guest Sky Princess departs Southampton August 8, 2026, on a 14-day Mediterranean cruise, highlighted with total eclipse viewing while the ship is in its path at sea off the coast of Spain.

“The best way to see a total solar eclipse is via cruise ship, and our guests who recently experienced this rare occurrence on Discovery Princess and Emerald Princess were simply blown away,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “We make it easy for guests to come aboard, relax and meet other eclipse enthusiasts. It’s truly a special opportunity.”

The Total Eclipse Sky Princess Voyage goes on sale May 23, 2024, with rates starting at $2,199* per person. During the eclipse, Sky Princess guests will gather on the top decks with Princess safety glasses for viewing, as well as enjoy lectures from astronomy experts, themed treats and drinks, stargazing at night, solar system trivia and more.

This incredible, 14-day Mediterranean cruise sailing takes place August 8-22, 2026, roundtrip from Southampton (London), and visits seven historical and vibrant ports, including:

  • Cherbourg, France - one of France’s greatest ports with art and history museums, its basilica, the Ravalet castle and the Cité de la Mer maritime museum.
  • Bilbao, Spain – located in northern Spain, Bilbao is surrounded by green mountains and is the de facto capital of Basque Country, with a skyscraper-filled downtown. It’s famed for the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
  • Malaga, Spain - famous as Picasso's birthplace and the gateway to Spain's Costa del Sol, Malaga mixes warm vacation vibes with Andalusia's indomitable spirit.
  • Cartagena, Spain - founded by the Carthaginians around 220 B.C., the city boomed during the Roman period. Among its many Roman ruins are a 1st-century B.C. theater and Casa de la Fortuna, a villa with murals and mosaics.
  • Gibraltar – this British Overseas Territory and headland is located on Spain's south coast. It’s dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, a 1,398-foot limestone ridge.
  • Lisbon, Portugal – the capital and largest city of Portugal, Lisbon is mainland Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast.
  • La Coruña, Spain – in the Galicia region of northwest Spain, it’s known for its Roman lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules, which has sweeping coastal views.

“Our recent solar eclipse cruises were completely sold out so interested guests should book this Sky Princess cruise as soon as it opens on May 23. It truly will be an experience to remember,” Padgett added.

Americans will need Real ID to travel in 2025: Here are the requirements

The U.S. is a year away from requiring Real ID.

The United States is less than a year out from the Department of Homeland Security's federal requirement for Real ID for domestic flights and entering federal facilities, and to help you get ahead -- and avoid a dreaded hourslong wait at the DMV -- "Good Morning America" has gathered all the essential details you need to ensure your identification is up to date.

What is a Real ID?

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security previously delayed the implementation of Real ID several times over the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But as of this week, U.S. residents have under a year to obtain their soon-to-be federally required form of identification.

Here's what you need to know:

The federal Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 following the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the Federal Government "set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses," the DHS states on its website .

PHOTO:Miami, Florida, Miami International Airport, Homeland Security REAL ID message

The new rules set out which forms of identification may be used to board flights within the United States and to enter secure federal facilities such as military bases, federal courthouses and other federal facilities.

Applying for a Real ID requires proof of identity, proof of residency and a trip to your local DMV. See below for more on the full requirements and application process details.

All U.S. states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories are issuing Real IDs.

Click here for additional answers from DHS to some frequently asked questions about Real ID.

Real ID application requirements

PHOTO: An example of a REAL ID from North Carolina issued by the DMV.

Requirements are largely similar across the states, but as of 2021, according to DHS , states are no longer required to collect a social security document from a Real ID applicant. They still must collect and retain the number as part of the application process to verify that information with the Social Security Administration as currently required by the Real ID regulations.

"Not all states have applied this, so please check with your state driver's licensing agency to find the most up to date information," the DHS website states.

In California for example, residents can apply for a Real ID by filling out an application online and upload documents before visiting a DMV office with their uploaded documents to complete the application, which should only take about 15 minutes in person, depending on wait times.

MORE: Millions of Americans could be grounded from flying because of REAL ID deadline

PHOTO: An example of a REAL ID from California issued by the DMV.

Here's everything California residents would need to provide for the application:

Proof of identity: One original or certified document. For example, a valid passport or birth certificate. Legal name change document is required if name on proof of identity is different from the name on the other documents such as a marriage certificate or adoption papers.

Proofs of California residency: Two documents, paper copies. For example, a utility bill or bank statement.

Social Security number: Some exceptions may apply. Click here for additional details from the DMV REAL ID page.

New requirements for Americans traveling to Europe postponed until 2025

What is the latest deadline for real id.

PHOTO: An example of a REAL ID from New York issued by the DMV.

Earlier this week marked one year before DHS begins enforcing the Real ID requirement on May 7, 2025.

Starting on that date, a Real ID or other federally approved identification will be required to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.

Federal agencies including Transportation Security Administration may only accept state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards as identification for the purposes of accessing federal facilities -- including TSA airport security checkpoints -- if the license or card was issued by a Real ID compliant state in accordance with the Real ID security standards.

Enhanced Driver's Licenses issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Vermont are considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards, according to DHS , and will also be accepted for official REAL ID purposes.

What does Real ID look like?

PHOTO: An example of a REAL ID from California issued by the DMV.

The Real ID looks almost the same as a current state ID card or driver's license, but has a compliant star marking.

Some differences may vary by state, such as in California, where a small golden bear appears on the top right corner with the white star on the animal's left side.

If an ID says "federal limits apply," that person will not be able to board a domestic flight or enter federal facilities, such as military bases, federal courthouses, and other locations after the May 7, 2025, deadline.

Does Real ID replace a passport?

The Real ID does not replace a passport for international travel, however it ensures that travelers can fly domestic within the U.S. and access secure federal locations without additional documentation, according to the DMV.
