Covid travel: Omicron hitting holiday bookings, says Tui

The pace of holiday bookings is slowing down after the emergence of the Omicron coronavirus variant, holiday giant Tui has said.

Reports of higher infection rates are also putting a dampener on bookings, especially for this winter, Tui said.

Despite this, it expects bookings for next summer to be close to pre-pandemic levels.

New UK travel rules to try to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant came into effect on Tuesday.

The changes include include pre-departure tests for people arriving in the UK, while 11 African countries have been put on the red list for travel .

The travel industry warned on Monday that the new rules would be a "hammer blow" and that livelihoods would be "devastated".

  • Omicron: What Covid tests do I need if I travel abroad?

Tui said it had 4.1 million bookings for its next winter and summer seasons, with 1.4 million bookings since 3 October.

However, it said: "The increased media coverage of rising incident rates and the emergence of new Omicron variant has weakened this positive momentum, particularly for winter."

Winter bookings were returning to pre-pandemic levels before "recent news coverage" of the pandemic, Tui said.

Over the past week, a quarter of Tui holidays booked for December had been postponed to a later date, it told the BBC.

The holiday firm narrowed its loss before tax to €71m (£60.5m) in the fourth quarter of the year to 30 September, compared with a loss in the same period last year of €836m.

It didn't say how much it expected to make next year.

After such a tumultuous couple of years for the travel industry, businesses are pinning their hopes on a strong 2022 summer season. There's been some optimism in the air.

However, the uncertainty around Omicron has prompted fears of a hit to consumer confidence, especially as a result of the re-introduction of temporary rules around international travel - with the UK bringing back the red list and extra Covid testing requirements.

So far it's short-term bookings being affected.

The real problem will arise if people who might normally make their summer holiday booking after Christmas or in January decide not to.

The industry will be crossing its fingers that the bumper summer it needs does still come to pass.

Tui chief executive Friedrich Joussen said that uncertainty over travel restrictions was "annoying".

"Overnight you get new rules," he said. "You have gone on vacation thinking nothing can happen, then tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people have new rules and that is difficult."

He called on the government to give the travel industry more notice about upcoming rule changes.

Mr Joussen added that Tui partially subsidises the costs of PCR tests, which has some financial impact on the business.

Omicron concerns

While Omicron symptoms have so far been mild, there are early signs it is more transmissible than the Delta variant .

Following the new UK border restrictions brought in after the emergence of Omicron, more than one in eight UK tourism firms that cater for foreign visitors have had cancellations or expect to have them in the run-up to Christmas, industry body UKInbound said.

It said a survey of its members suggested "green shoots of recovery" had been "put on hold".

Its chief executive Joss Croft said: "Although thoroughly depressing, these results are not surprising.

"International consumer confidence to travel to the UK has taken another huge hit, and the UK's kneejerk decisions and lack of support for businesses that bear the consequences, means the recovery of this industry has already been derailed."

He added that firms needed "emergency support" and that they had "no wiggle room left".

"The summer season was all but lost for them, they have depleted their cash reserves and maxed out loans," he said.

Tui reports strong demand as travel approaches pre-Covid levels

Shares in package holiday operator jump 10% on expectations of a healthy summer

The package holiday operator Tui Group has enjoyed strong Easter bookings to sunshine destinations including the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean, and expects a strong summer season as travel approaches pre-Covid levels.

Turkey, the Balearic islands, mainland Spain, Greece and Egypt which offer “guaranteed sun” at this time of year have also been in demand with UK and German travellers, said the German-based company. It is one of the world’s biggest tourism groups, and owns planes, hotels and cruise ships.

More than 500,000 people are heading on holiday with Tui over Easter, the company said, and its load factor (a measure of how full its planes are) is expected to be 95%, similar to pre-pandemic levels.

Sebastian Ebel, the chief executive, said: “Booking momentum remains encouraging, and the travel trends and strong demand for the Easter holidays are a healthy signal for the upcoming summer.

“Based on trends to date, we continue to anticipate capacity to be close to pre-pandemic levels. We expect a good summer 2023.”

Shares in Tui jumped 10% after the update, making it the top riser on the FTSE 250.

Despite the cost of living crisis, people are keen to travel, and the company has recorded a “significant increase in booking momentum” since the start of the year.

In the UK and Germany, bookings surged to record levels on several days, and in the four weeks to 5 February, bookings were about 10% higher than 2019 levels. The company has also increased its prices.

Tui cited studies showing that many people do not want to give up holidays despite economic uncertainty. However, customers continue to book at shorter notice and prefer package holidays and all-inclusive offers, which allows them to budget better.

The travel and tourism sector has been slowly recovering from the pandemic, which brought international travel to an abrupt halt when governments imposed travel bans and restrictions to try to stop the spread of the virus. Demand started to recover last year, but severe staff shortages led to travel chaos at several UK and European airports last Easter and in the summer, with tens of thousands of flight cancellations and long delays.

In recent weeks, strikes in France, Germany and the UK have caused air travel disruption. British Airways has cancelled 300 flights , mostly to Europe, with security staff at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 on strike until Easter Sunday. In Portugal, holidaymakers face delays on entering the country as immigration officials took to the picket lines on Thursday for five days of industrial action.

TUI issues holidays update as UK travel rules on Covid tests change this week

TUI has issued a holiday update for Brits as the UK's latest travel rules due to Omicron come into force this week including new Covid test rules for anyone aged 12 or over

TUI Boeing 737-800 landing at Gran Canaria Las Palmas airport

  • 14:19, 6 Dec 2021

TUI has issued a holidays update for Brits as the UK is set to introduce new travel rules this week , including new Covid test requirements as part of wider attempts to curb the spread of the Omicron variant .

From Tuesday (December 7) all arrivals aged 12 or over arriving in the UK, no matter what their vaccination status, will need take a pre-departure test PCR or lateral flow test within 48 hours before departing to the UK.

A statement on TUI's website read: "We’re aware all passengers entering the UK will now need to have a negative lateral flow or PCR test before departure, which must be taken within 48 hours before travel. This will come into effect from 04:00 on Tuesday 7th December.

"We would like to reassure customers that their holiday is still due to operate as planned, and our destination teams are confirming testing availability for customers in resort. Customers in resort should contact their TUI representative for their nearest testing clinic.

"For customers due to travel after 8th December, we recommend you order your tests today or on Monday so they can be delivered to your home before you depart on your flight."

The Omicron variant has already caused a number of countries changing entry rules for travellers, including popular destinations such as France and Spain.

Throughout the pandemic, TUI has been one of the travel firms offering flexible bookings during the pandemic, which includes being able to amend your booking free of charge.

As part of its statement regarding the new Covid test rules, the travel firm included further information for holidaymakers: "For customers who are unable to travel as planned, please contact us on 0203 451 2688 to discuss your options, which includes changing your holiday fee-free. Our normal opening hours are Monday-Friday 9am – 7pm, Saturday 9am – 6pm or Saturday 10am – 5pm.

"Alternatively, if customers are in destination, please contact our 24/7 TUI Experience Centre on +44 3333 365 147. We would like to thank our customers for their understanding at this time."

It's worth noting that you're only entitled to a full refund from a travel firm when they cancel your holiday. This tends to be when there are rules in place that don't allow for non-essential travel, such as a change in Foreign Office advice, or new restrictions that come into play which mean you're no longer able to travel to a destination.

This usually applies when a country is moved to the red list, which does affect Brits who booked holidays especially when the Foreign Office advises against travel to a destination.

At the time of writing, there are 11 countries currently on the red list; Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

EasyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and Tui travel updates after new traffic light system unveiled

Airlines and holiday companies have seen an increase in demand since the Government's announcement

Airlines and holiday companies reported a bumper weekend of bookings after the Government announced changes to the Covid travel traffic light system.

On Friday (September 17) Transport Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed that the red, amber, and green system used to grade countries regarding the risk of Covid-19 being brought into the country by travellers would change.

The three tier system has placed a stranglehold on the tourism industry with many Brits reluctant to travel due to the costs of PCR tests and fears that they could become trapped abroad if they contracted the virus.

The lady was barred from her Ryanair flight to Spain

Under the new rules, the system will be streamlined with only a red list of countries and a new 'rest of the world' list which is made up of green and amber countries combined.

The new "simplified" system will come into effect on October 4, allowing for double jabbed travellers to continue avoiding any sort of quarantine.

From October 4, holidaymakers will also not need a pre-departure test before arriving in England.

And from late October travellers who have been fully vaccinated will no longer be tasked with taking a PCR test after their return to England and instead will be required to take a quicker privately funded lateral flow test.

The red list has also been reduced from 62 nations - with Turkey, Egypt, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Oman, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Kenya removed from the red list as of 4am on Wednesday, September 22.

For those unvaccinated, the rules are becoming tougher with travellers required to still complete a pre-departure test, a day two and eight PCR test and self-isolate for ten days upon their return from a non-red list country under the new two-tiered travel programme.

With the new rules in place travel companies such as easyJet, RyanAir, Jet2 and Tui have been updating their advice on travelling abroad.

EasyJet responded enthusiastically to the news of the changing travel traffic light system and responded with a whole host of new flights for the Autumn.

In a post on Facebook the flight company wrote: "Less lights, more go, go, go. The UK Government has confirmed that from 4 October, fully vaccinated travellers will no longer be required to take a pre-departure test to return to the UK from non-red list countries.

"As a result, we'll be adding a further 51,000 seats for departures from the UK to your fave beach destinations for October including Alicante, Majorca and Faro."

EasyJet has confirmed that there are currently "no plans of reinstating or adding flights to the current released schedule but people can sign up for the newsletter to be one of the first to be notified of any route changes/addition".

The airline has also said that there will be fee free changes to passenger's journeys up to two hours before their flight.

Passengers board easyJet flight at London Gatwick to Glasgow

On the RyanAir website, the airline company celebrated the news that rules were changing in England with a huge headline which read: "Europe Unlocked, No test needed to return to England".

The company is encouraging new bookings with insanely low prices for flights from London to destinations such as Naples from £7.99 and Seville from £9.99.

RyanAir is also promoting a zero change fee which must be made at least 7 days pre-departure.

The booking must be made by October 4, 2021, and the travel date must be between October 4, 2021 and November 30, 2021.

In its latest travel update on September 21, RyanAir wrote on the website: As a result of Covid-19 you may be required to complete and present additional travel documentation before you travel. Please ensure you check the most up to date travel restrictions and country-specific requirements before you fly.

"Failure to present any mandatory documentation will result in your travel being denied by local authorities."

The company also added that it was mandatory to wear masks at all times at the airport and on the flight, body temperatures checks may be taken and if passengers fail the check they will not be permitted to travel.

Holiday guru Tui has updated its website in response to the Government announcement with some of the newly available information and destinations.

"Amber means go – as long as you’re fully vaccinated, if you’re travelling back from an amber country, you no longer have to self-isolate when you get home. And no one has to self-isolate when returning from a green country, either," Tui confirms on its website.

Tui also confirms that passengers will no longer be required to take a PCR test if they are full vaccinated.

Tui announced: "From Monday, October 4, 2021, the UK’s traffic light system of green, amber and red countries will change to a two-tiered system.

"What’s more, fully vaccinated passengers and children aged 17 and under who are travelling with their vaccinated parents on or from this date are no longer required to take a pre-departure PCR test on their return to England."

Jet2 will travel to over 40 destinations where passengers will not need to self-isolate on their return

Jet2 also welcomed the news of the new traffic light system which increases the quarantine free holiday destinations that the airline covers to over 40.

The airline also confirmed that Turkey would be back on the holiday list with flights from September 23.

On Twitter Jet2 wrote: "Heard the good news? #Europe is unlocked! Say hello to over 40 quarantine-free destinations.

"And holidays just got easier and cheaper – if you're fully vaccinated, no return to UK test is needed*! PLUS…..#Turkey is BACK from 23rd September 2021."

TUI Taps Into African Tourism With Hotel Push

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 16th, 2024 at 4:52 PM EDT

TUI is tapping into the booming African tourism market as it spreads its offerings throughout the continent.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

TUI Group’s hotel division, TUI Hotels & Resorts , said on Tuesday it planned to expand its presence in sub-Saharan Africa, a region with significant tourism potential.

The move comes after years of concentrating on North Africa, where TUI boasts a portfolio of 76 hotels. The new push southwards includes eight new hotels planned for Cape Verde, Gambia, Senegal, Tanzania, and Kenya.

TUI’s Local Partnerships

The expansion is meant to serve a range of target groups, such as vacationers looking for more affordable trips to luxury travelers looking for elevated experiences.

The company said it’s “looking forward to contributing to the development of the African hospitality industry and working together with local communities,” but it didn’t go into detail about how those collaborations would happen, other than to call out TUI’s new hotel brand, The Mora, which is debuting in Zanzibar.

“Our hotel brand TUI Blue, as well as the new brand The Mora, are committed to creating a local touch in their hotel experiences,” a TUI spokesperson said in response to a Skift query. “This can be achieved in many different ways, from local suppliers, e.g. for food-and-beverage, to entertainment from the region or in collaboration with local designers.”

The company says it is collaborating with Sands of Darakasi Resorts Limited to build a TUI Blue hotel in Kenya and that it is looking to partner with other local groups to grow the franchise in the region.

“Independent hotel owners can benefit from our hotel brands, our expertise in operations, and the digital hotel infrastructure,” said a TUI spokesperson.

In East Africa, TUI focuses primarily on Mauritius, Tanzania, and Kenya.

There are several reasons that tour companies could be drawn to the market now.

“The likely reason that there is greater interest now by TUI in Africa is because [it offers] a low cost for a good product, there’s a greater marketing push from African destination marketing organizations in the European market, and there’s a potential substitution away from perceived risky Middle Eastern destinations because of current conflicts,” said Oliver Martin , Senior Director at Skift Advisory .

The Booming Africa Travel Market

TUI is also tapping into a young market. In 2023, The World Travel and Tourism Council projected that travel and tourism could boost the continent’s economy by $168 billion in the next 10 years.

There is particular potential for internal travel on the continent.

Domestic tourism in South Africa took off in 2023 , with overnight trips climbing by 31% for the first four months compared to 2022, and domestic travel spending increasing by 41%.

For now, domestic tourism is essential to the industry’s growth due to high travel costs and poor transportation networks within and between countries. The continent is also experiencing an unprecedented boom in its middle class, with numbers tripling to more than 310 million over the past 30 years.

“The push to market to and engage African nationals is relatively new,” says Martin. He attributes it to COVID, the rising middle class, and how difficult it can be to get visas outside Africa.

“However, Africa is by no means new to the European market,” he adds. “There is a long history of charter and all-inclusive European travel to East Coast Kenya destinations and Tanzania.”

TUI plans on taking advantage of this growing internal market, but also has its eyes on bigger markets. “South Africa and Kenya are strong local markets,” TUI’s spokesperson said. “But of course the hotels will also attract guests from Europe. At the same time, we are increasing our sales activities in Asia, e.g. China.”

TUI Group plans hotel expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa

T UI Group, a tourism group headquartered in Germany, has announced plans to broaden its hotel business in Sub-Saharan Africa, building on its strong presence in North Africa where it currently operates 76 hotels.

The expansion includes the introduction of eight new hotels across Cape Verde, The Gambia, Senegal, Tanzania, and Kenya, marking significant growth in the south of the continent.

The group is also launching the Mora luxury brand this year, starting with The Mora Zanzibar, which promises contemporary luxury and tailored services.

TUI Blue managing director Artur Gerber said, "With our variety of hotel brands, we will create new hotel experiences in Africa for different target groups – from price-conscious holidays in a TUI Suneo hotel via our global brand TUI Blue to a new luxury experience with The Mora. We are looking forward to contributing to the development of the African hospitality industry and working together with local communities."

In addition to The Mora, TUI Blue is planning a new project in East Africa. The TUI BLUE Watamu, a hotel with 117 rooms, will be located in Kilifi County along the Indian Ocean and will be the first TUI Blue hotel in Kenya. The project is being developed in partnership with Sands of Darakasi Resorts.

TUI Blue head of global development Wesam Okasha said: "This project is a great example of how we share our expertise as a leading leisure hotel brand with partners and jointly develop new hotels on the African continent for our guests.

"In collaboration with Valor Hospitality Partners, we are currently looking for further franchise opportunities who want to become part of our growth strategy."

TUI Group's focus in East Africa is on key destinations such as Mauritius, Tanzania, and Kenya. The company's current portfolio in Africa includes more than 90 hotels with over 30,000 rooms across seven countries.

In February 2024, TUI Group formed an alliance with Spain-based hotel chain Sercotel to expand its tours and activities sector.

"TUI Group plans hotel expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa" was originally created and published by Hotel Management Network , a GlobalData owned brand.
