When you think of wine, what first comes to mind? You may be surprised to hear that Wisconsin is home to some of the most iconic and unique wines across the country. On top of that, who doesn’t love a good wine and cheese pairing? Wisconsinites sure do! Let’s explore the Door County region and how you can get out to taste your favorite wines and cheeses right here in Wisconsin.

About the Door County Wine Trail

The Door County Wine Trail is home to 8 different wineries right now that offers up something different at each location! Each of the wineries has a unique piece to them and provides a memorable experience that you will never forget. Many of the wineries incorporate locally grown fruits into their wine, especially grapes and cherries but some have started to try out a unique hybrid-style grape!

Wineries along the trail are Door 44 Winery , Door Peninsula Winery , Harbor Ridge Winery , Orchard Country Winery, Red Oak Winery, Simon Creek Winery , Stone’s Throw Winery , and the Von Stiehl Winery ! While the Door County Wine Trail itself doesn’t offer a tour, you can pick up a map at the Destination Door County office or check it out here to get an idea of where the wineries are all located before heading out on your trip! From there, while you’re traveling throughout Door County you can plan to make your stops when you want and at whatever locations you see fit.

Two Wineries You Can’t-Miss

While planning your trip along the Door County Wine Tour, two wineries that you can’t miss out on are Door Peninsula Winery and Harbor Ridge Winery . These two locations offer unique and historic visits to each place and are definitely an experience you won’t want to miss.

First up is Door Peninsula Winery which opened in 1974 and we can definitely say… They’ve grown! The winery was once a former two-room schoolhouse that was built in 1868 and closed its doors in 1962. We know you might be wondering, ‘How does a schoolhouse make for a place to make wine?’. Well, Mark Fehls and Tom Alberts actually decided upon the location due to the thick basement walls and the Victorian-era architecture that the building held.

Now the winery produces a little over 200 thousand gallons of wine each year and has become one of Wisconsin’s top producers. Door Peninsula produces over 60 different wines and ciders and you can taste these at one of their two tasting rooms to really get a bit of history!

Next, we need to talk more about Harbor Ridge Winery ! This log cabin winery opened in 2010 and is nestled right in the beautiful Door County. While things have changed over the years, a key part that has stayed consistent is their top sellers! The first two wines that the winery introduced, Knockin’ Heads Red and Mademoiselle, are still some of the top sellers today.

In 2012, the winery expanded and built a facility that was dedicated to primarily making the wines they were selling which gave them the ability to expand into a selection of premium barrel-aged wines. A few years ago, new owners took over and continued to build the winery along with installing a vineyard. Harbor Ridge Winery now holds approximately 70 barrels and two stainless steel tanks for production and offers a selection of over 20 wines. There is a variety of award-winning wines and you can choose from sweet, semi-sweet, dry, or barrel-aged making this a special stop along the trail with plenty of options!

Things To Do Along Your Tour

Photo Credit: Renards  // Discover Mediaworks

The best part about Door County and the wine trail is that it lies right along the Door County Coastal Byway. This scenic highway goes through the entire county offering beautiful and breathtaking views throughout. Along with that, there are plenty of stops to be made while venturing out to the different wineries like stopping for delicious cheeses or visiting orchards too!

Renards has become an iconic Wisconsin cheese and in Door County, you can definitely try it for yourself. Chris Renard is a third-generation cheesemaker and is well known for the neat blends of cheeses they make along with aged cheeses.

And while you’re in Door County, you have to make a stop to visit Seaquist Orchards . This multi-generational family business started back in the early 1900s by planting cherry trees! The farm now has about 1,000 acres of tart cherries and over 50 acres of apples and sweet cherries.

Another cheesy location you can’t miss on the Door County Coastal Byway is the Door Artisan Cheese . The cheese company showcases the craft of cheesemaking (right on site!) and features select cheeses from around the world. They’ve even blasted out their own cheese caves 18 feet below the surface where they now age many of their award-winning cheeses!

From the Host

Discover Wisconsin host Alex Wehrley got to first-hand experience the entire Door County Wine tour on set with the team. Here’s more on her experience:

“I was truly blown away by not only the wine in Door County but also the entire wine-tasting experience. I’ve been to Napa and Sonoma, and Door County is right up there with its peaceful and picturesque atmosphere. And at the same time, the wineries in Door County offer a unique approachable and laid back vibe that gives them the perfect Wisconsin twist.”

Wine is becoming a true staple in Wisconsin but especially in Door County. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a week-long stay in Door County, you need to travel along the coastal byway and make stops along the wine trail! While visiting, don’t forget to make your way to some of the best cheese shops in Wisconsin. Now that we’ve prepared you for a fun trip in Door County, get more ideas in our newest episode, ‘Door County Wine and Cheese Tour’ here:

Your First-Class "Smaller Group" option for touring More of Door County

Door County Day Trips Logo

PENINSULA DAY TRIPS

Our day trips are different because we simply spend more time enjoying more of everything this amazing area has to offer.  It is our mission for you to experience Door County in comfort while enjoying smaller group sizes and personal attention.

We also pick you up at your place and drop you back off.  This way you won't have to worry about getting around, parking, or even planning.  Just tell us where to pick you up and we'll do the rest.  We're your easy way to see Door County rain or shine.

No two day trips will ever be the same since we do not use a cookie cutter approach to touring.  If a particular group wants to do one more wine stop, shop a little more, or go on a hike, we will modify the tour at that time to incorporate alternatives and options that meet the entire groups wants/needs as we are able.

In other words, you have a voice in deciding exactly what you do or see on our day trips.

The View from Ellison Bay Scenic Overlook

What We Offer...

Local Tour Managers/Drivers with extensive knowledge of the area's history, attractions, and native politics/culture

Black, late model luxury vans for comfort and elegance

Large doors with running boards for easy entry

A climate controlled cabin, comfortable in the heat or the rain/wind

Large Tinted Windows for privacy and viewing the sights without glaring sunlight

Raised roof for easy entry and exit

A big trunk for all of your Door County Goodies; when you go a little shopping crazy!

Eagle Bluff Lighthouse: Peninsula State Park

Our Day Trip will typically take most of a day to complete with customers being picked up and dropped off at their respective lodging or designated pick-up location.  We truly take you for the day so you can just relax.

We'll pick you up from anywhere in Door County

or at our park and ride locations in

Sturgeon Bay & Egg Harbor.

Exact Park and Ride locations will be shared at confirmation .

Pick-ups will occur between 8 and 9 a.m. with drop-offs between 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Of Course There May Be Seasonal ...irregularities!

You may notice that there is no exact itinerary for our day trip.   (only this sample itinerary!)

Of course we will take you to all of the iconic must-see Door County scenic locations like Cave Point and Peninsula Park, but you can't have a flexible tour with a rigid schedule.  DC is a dynamic area that has a variety of elements to experience, and some days are just better than others for some things.  In addition, due to the irregular nature of restaurant and other businesses hours, an exact itinerary is not possible.  Restaurants, shop stops, and activities are determined on a day-by-day, tour-by-tour basis to ensure you get timely service at locations that are open, have adequate staffing, and will give you the best impression of Door County on the DAY you visit.

Let's just say we take you up one side of the peninsula and down the other, with lots of stops in between!   ;-)

There will usually be at least one stop specifically designated as a meal stop.  Meals are on your own but we let them know your coming for the best experience possible.

We will also ask groups if they prefer to grab small meals throughout the day rather than take the time to take in a sit down meal. There are plenty of opportunities to grab small meals all along our journey and  if you can eat as we go, you'll see more.

W e encourage you to bring something to eat, snacks, etc... our tours are fast paced and we are constantly moving so absolutely, bring something to eat or something to drink along.  You'll need the energy. :)

Peninsula State Park

We spent a good portion of the tour in Peninsula State Park (Wisconsin’s most popular state park). One of the reasons for its popularity is the Sunset Bike Path, a 9.6-mile crushed limestone trail running through the boreal forest, cedar wetlands, and meadows out to the beach.

Our guide told us that the winding roads through Peninsula State Park were designed to encourage visitors to meander and take their time.

There are also miles of hiking and biking trails, snowshoe trails, cross-country ski trails, and rugged off-road mountain bike trails. In the winter, the upper roads are closed to cars but open to snowmobiles.

We hopped off our trolley at Sven’s Bluff Overlook (one of the most photographed spots in Door County).

The sweeping view of Green Bay and its coastline is magnificent.

Sven's overlook

Our trolley tour also took us past the 65-foot Eagle Tower. Visitors may climb the stairs to the top or take the 800-foot ramp to the observation deck.

More Fun Facts About Door County

  • The Niagara Escarpment is a massive limestone cliff ridge running from New York State (its name comes from the cliffs of Niagara Falls) through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It’s the very foundation of Door County.
  • Fish Creek was the first big tourist destination in Door County, and early visitors arrived by steamboat.
  • When National Geographic published a photograph with a feature entitled “Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, A Kingdom So Delicious” in 1969, Door County exploded into a wildly popular USA travel destination.
  • Door County has 11 lighthouses , four of which can be toured.
  • Legend has it that Door County’s name comes from the narrow and treacherous strait between the northern tip of the peninsula and Washington Island. The unpredictable waves and currents and underwater rocks caused many a shipwreck and death over the years. As a result, the passage was dubbed Porte Des Morts (Death’s Door, in English), and the name, though shortened to just ‘Door,’ stuck.
  • Summer theater is alive and well in Door County, with two outdoor theaters showing live performances all season long.
  • Typically the second or third week of October is the prime leaf-peeping season, and in Door County, the vibrant colors last longer—up to two weeks.

Our trolley ride took us through several charming villages, and our guide shared lots of fun facts and history about each one, as well as recommendations on where to eat.

We learned about seafood boils, supper clubs, farm markets, and more. Here’s a tip for whitefish fans: At the Post Office restaurant, they’ll ask you if you want your fish de-boned!

At the end of the tour, he mentioned the many other Door County Trolley Tours available: food and drink-themed, ghosts, true crime (the six most gruesome murders in the county), a lighthouse tour, holiday-themed, and a shortened family ride for those with young children.

1. Consider Your Adventure Level

If you’re someone who loves a good adrenaline rush, kayak tours and segway tours might be right up your alley. You can enjoy the breathtaking views of Door County’s landscapes and learn about the area’s history and culture, all from the comfort of your seat.

3. Factor In the Kids

Having three kids of my own, I know the importance of picking an activity that keeps them engaged. Trolley tours are fantastic for families. They’re entertaining, informative, and just the right length to keep the little ones from getting antsy. Plus, some tours are themed, which can add an extra layer of fun!

1. Dress in Layers

Door County’s weather can be as varied as its attractions, with mornings starting cool, afternoons getting quite warm, and evenings bringing in a chill from the lake. Dressing in layers allows you to comfortably adjust to these changes. Think a breathable t-shirt, a cozy sweater or fleece, and a windproof jacket. Don’t forget your sunglasses and a hat for those sunny days, and always have a rain jacket handy just in case.

2. Wear Comfortable Footwear

Depending on your tour, you might find yourself walking on uneven cobblestones, sandy beaches, or rocky paths. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is a must. Closed-toe shoes or supportive sandals can keep your feet happy and let you focus on the sights, not on sore toes.

3. Bring Snacks and Water

Fourth of July in Door County: Here's when and where to watch the fireworks and celebrate

Six communities on the peninsula host fireworks shows july 3 and 4, along with the parades, music, food and fun to celebrate the holiday.

DOOR COUNTY - If it's the Fourth of July holiday in Door County, there must be fireworks.

And parades. And food (including strawberries, fish sandwiches, pancakes, burritos, barbeque and more). And live music. And a whole lot more fun activities.

Six communities on the Peninsula host fireworks shows Wednesday or Thursday, July 3 and 4, along with all the other festivities that go with celebrating the Independence Day holiday. Plus, there's another community celebratory fireworks show a week later, and people can watch that show from the water as well as from land. Here's your guide to Fourth of July celebrations in Door County.

The Peninsula's fireworks shows start Wednesday, July 3 with the only show in Southern Door, as the Maplewood Athletic Club sponsors its annual Fourth of July celebration.

The fireworks start at dusk (about 9:30 p.m.), and the athletic club will operate the concession stand throughout the evening. Parking, and the best viewing sites, are available at Baumann Ball Park next to Forestville Town Hall, 7705 County H, just west of Wisconsin 42. Rain date is July 4.

For more information, visit forestvilletown.wi.gov .

The Egg Harbor Business Association's annual Independence Day Celebration is so big, it stretches over two days, with music and fireworks July 3 and a parade July 4.

The festivities begin with food (brats, burgers, hot dogs, cheese curds, kettle corn and more) and refreshments starting at 4 p.m. July 3 at Harbor View Park, 7809 State 42, with popular local country band Modern Day Drifters on stage at the park at 5 p.m.

The day closes with what organizers have said for years is one of Wisconsin's most spectacular fireworks shows. It goes off over the harbor at dusk, and for the first time the fireworks will be shot from a barge in the harbor instead of the community beach, allowing the beach to stay open all day and likely making it a prime viewing spot.

July 4 sees the traditional parade at 1:30 p.m. through downtown Egg Harbor, heading south along State 42 from the north end of Church Street to County T. Members of the University of Wisconsin Marching Band will not only be part of the parade but also perform the band's renowned Fifth Quarter routine in Harbor View Park after the parade. Food and refreshments again will be available in the park, starting at 11 a.m. and continuing after the parade.

Those who want to be in the parade can be in the parade – no registration is necessary. Participants simply need to be on the north end of Church Street by 12:30 p.m. to receive a copy of parade rules and line up.

For more information, call 920-868-3717 or visit eggharbordoorcounty.org .

To get even more into the patriotic spirit in Egg Harbor, Birch Creek Music Performance Center holds its traditional matinee concert, "A Birch Creek Symphonic Fourth," at 3 p.m. July 4 in the 500-seat Dutton Concert Barn on its campus, 3 miles east of the village on County E.

Classical music and patriotic tunes will be played in the program by the Symphony Session students in Birch Creek's summer music academy and the professional musicians from across the country who teach them during the day, this year featuring tenor vocalist and former Birch Creek student Jonathan Zeng. A pie and ice cream social precedes the concert at 2 p.m.

General admission tickets are $33 for adults, $10 students, free for ages 11 and younger. For tickets or more information, call 920-868-3763 or visit birchcreek.org .

Baileys Harbor

A parade, strawberries, pancakes, art, a farmers market and fireworks mark the Baileys Harbor Community Association's annual Fourth of July Celebration on July 4.

The traditional opening event for the festivities is the pancake breakfast served by the Baileys Harbor Fire Department from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the fire station, 2404 Park Road.

More food can be found at the annual Strawberry Fest sponsored by the Baileys Harbor Women's Club. With strawberries, shortcake and strawberry ice cream sundaes for sale, it starts at 10 a.m. in Town Hall, 2392 County F, and runs until 2 p.m. or the berries are gone. Proceeds from the event, which the club has held every year since 1968, go to college scholarships for graduating high school students who live in Baileys Harbor.

Food vendors will be open at 9 a.m. in the parking lot at Town Hall and the beer tent also opens at 9 a.m. in Kendall Park.

Also at Town Hall, but outside on the lawn, an arts and crafts fair will be held starting at 9 a.m., along with face painting for the children.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. heading along State 57 through the community. Among the performers in the parade will be 132D Army Band from the Wisconsin National Guard.

After the parade, at about 11 a.m., classic rock band Glas Hamr performs in Kendall Park until 4 p.m.

Following all these activities, fireworks will light the skies over Anclam Park on the Lake Michigan shore at dusk. Watchers aren't allowed on the park beach during the fireworks – it's a fallout zone for the aerial explosives – but the show will be easily visible throughout the harbor.

With the highway being closed for the parade and the expected crowds during the day, the community is offering shuttle buses from Recreation Park to Town Hall between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

For more information, call 920-839-2366 or visit baileysharbor.com .

Sturgeon Bay

Destination Sturgeon Bay brings the music, food, refreshments and fireworks with its annual "Sturgeon Bay Celebrates the Fourth of July!" July 4 along the waterfront at Sunset Park, 737 N. Third Ave.

Food and beverages are served starting at 5 p.m., with a variety of food trucks and vendors such as The Dough Shoppe, Steel Belly BBQ, The Dog House, Aurora Burrito, Cowboy Kettle Korn LLC and Jolly Street Pizza Truck. Destination Sturgeon Bay will also sell Culver’s custard and an assortment of beverages. Those attending can get into the spirit with red, white and blue glow sticks that will be available.

Live music is provided by popular blues band Cathy Grier and the Troublemakers, taking the stage at 6 p.m. and performing until the fireworks begin at dusk (between 9 and 9:30). Viewing points can be found all around the water.

For more information, call 920-743-6246 or visit sturgeonbay.net .

Fourth of July festivities at the tip of the Peninsula take place from 5 to 10 p.m. July 4 at the town park. Live music will be played and food and beverages will be for sale, and there's a whitefish sandwich fry fundraiser for Death's Door Maritime Museum, the Gills Rock satellite site of the Door County Maritime Museum that focuses on the Peninsula's commercial fishing traditions. The traditional boat parade in the bay starts about an hour before dusk (around 7:30 p.m.), with fireworks starting at dusk.

For more information, call 920-854-5448 or visit doorcountynorth.org .

Washington Island

For those taking a ferry ride off the tip of Peninsula, Washington Island's fireworks show starts around 8:30 p.m. July 4 at the Washington Island Ball Park on Main Road. They're sponsored by the Washington Island Fire Department, and firefighters will "pass the boot" around for donations to offset the cost.

Before lighting up the night, a children's parade will take place. Kids can line up at Legion Hall at about 7 p.m. and walk, ride, skate or whatever from the hall to the Ball Park in time for the fireworks.

For more information, call 920-847-2179 or visit washingtonisland.com ; for ferry information to get to and from the Island, call 920-847-2546 or visit wisferry.com .

The Sister Bay Advancement Association has for several years held its annual Freedom Fest party and fireworks show a Saturday or two after the Fourth and does so again with fireworks at dusk July 13 at Marina Park. For more information, call 920-854-3230 or visit sisterbay.com .

With Biden faltering, can Trump finally win Orange County?

Can Trump finally win Orange County?

Ever since President Biden’s disastrous June 27 debate performance, my regular electric-bike excursions along the Huntington Beach path have changed.

I’m not talking about the views of the Pacific, the birds dancing in the Bolsa Chica wetlands or the smell of early-evening beach bonfires. They’re all just as soothing as ever.

But these days, politics is always lurking in the background.

A few weeks back, I loaded my electric bike onto the car rack and drove across the San Gabriel River, passing through the “Orange Curtain.” On Seal Beach Boulevard, a sea of Trump flags and banners swayed in the wind in front of a Vons. This was “Trump Mart,” and a woman seated at a table was selling Trump-themed merch.

I got to the beach and parked next to a house that had a 10-foot-fall Trump banner hanging from the second floor. I’ve been back a few times since the debate, and the scene is largely unchanged.

Huntington Beach is having a lengthy MAGA moment, complete with battles involving pride flags , book banning, voter ID rules and COVID-related restrictions. Its leaders have made headlines in right-wing circles; first came Tito Ortiz, the former MMA fighter turned Trump-on-the-Pacific , and now there’s the current mayor, Gracey Van Der Mark, whom Times columnist Gustavo Arellano described as “ Huntington Beach’s Latina MAGA mayor.”

But Orange County is a big place, with 3.1 million residents, and it’s no longer the homogeneous land of Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and John Wayne. (Roughly 38% of the population is white, while 34% is Latino and 23% is Asian, according to census data .)

Remember, Orange County has rejected Trump twice, favoring Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020.

But what does 2024 have in store?

I have not seen any recent polling. But how Trump does in Orange County will say a lot — not only about his hold on the Republican Party but also about the sentiments of voting blocs that have helped Democrats here in recent years.

In 2020, Trump carried a swath of the county from the Newport and Huntington coasts north into heavily Asian Westminster and Garden Grove. He also scored in northern suburbs (Villa Park, Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills) and South County (San Clemente, Mission Viejo and Cota de Caza).

Biden took much of the rest, including major population centers such as Anaheim, Irvine, Santa Ana, Orange, Fullerton and Costa Mesa.

Small red and white flags and a blue and white striped flag sit on a concrete ledge with a sandy beach in the background.

There is no question Biden’s popularity has dropped since the debate, and you have to assume that is playing out in the purple parts of Orange County. Do disaffected voters go to Trump?

Here are a few things to consider:

  • My colleague Hannah Fry earlier this year delved into the origins of Orange County’s purple tendencies and found this: UC Irvine researchers in a poll described them as “modestly partisan Republicans.” This group “differs from the traditional GOP voter in a few key areas: They’re wealthier, they’re diverse, they’re more socially liberal, and they’re less resistant to being taxed to help solve issues related to climate change and homelessness.” These Republicans are different from the die-hard Trump backers and clearly helped give Clinton and Biden the edge. It will be particularly interesting to see how this practical voter bloc has processed Biden’s age and concerns over his long-term fitness for office.
  • UCI data found Trump made inroads in 2020 in Little Saigon, the heart of Orange County’s Vietnamese community. And Republicans are targeting Asians hard in 2024.
  • The Orange County Register predicted Asian voters would be crucial to the 2024 outcome. “Like the rest of this purple county, it straddles the conservative-liberal divide,” Long Bui, an international studies professor at UC Irvine, told the Register in May.
  • A big wild card: Will the election draw more voters who are younger, liberal minded and less affluent ? Latinos could be crucial if they stick with the Democratic nominee, whoever that is. How are they processing the debate? Does it make them more or less likely to come out to vote?

I got my electric bike a few months into the pandemic — an attempt to take a break from lockdown and have some exercise that did not involve walking from the home office to the refrigerator and back 20 times. I discovered the Huntington Beach path that fall, just as the 2020 campaign was reaching its climax.

On the morning of election day, I hit the path ahead of what I knew was going to be a long night in the newsroom. Like everyone, I was tense about what was about to happen — or not happen, depending on whether the presidential race was too close to call. The battery-assisted pedaling and the ocean breezes worked their magic, and I relaxed. Later, I caught sight of a guy near the pier waving a huge Trump flag and circling around on a beach cruiser. A woman cycling ahead of me breezed by and rang her bike bell in support. Was this a sign that the country was up for another upset victory? Were the polls off again?

In the end , Trump carried Huntington Beach but lost Orange County. It wasn’t even close :

  • Biden: 814,009
  • Trump: 676,4498

But a lot has happened in those four years. A lot has happened in the last two weeks. A lot has happened in the last few days.

Today’s great photo is from Alicia Springer of Chico: Lassen Volcanic National Park .

Alicia writes: “[It’s] the Sacramento Valley’s summer escape from heat and smog and winter snow destination. The park typically gets so much snow that roads and trails are closed through June. This week, we were kayaking and swimming in a chill mountain lake while temperatures in the Valley topped 110. A lot of the eastern side of the park was nuked by the Dixie Fire in 2022 but amazing wildflowers are the regeneration prize.”
