On top of that, who doesn’t love a good wine and cheese pairing? Wisconsinites sure do! Let’s explore the Door County region and how you can get out to taste your favorite wines and cheeses right here in Wisconsin.

About the Door County Wine Trail

The Door County Wine Trail is home to 8 different wineries right now that offers up something different at each location! Each of the wineries has a unique piece to them and provides a memorable experience that you will never forget. Many of the wineries incorporate locally grown fruits into their wine, especially grapes and cherries but some have started to try out a unique hybrid-style grape!

Wineries along the trail are Door 44 Winery , Door Peninsula Winery , Harbor Ridge Winery , Orchard Country Winery, Red Oak Winery, Simon Creek Winery , Stone’s Throw Winery , and the Von Stiehl Winery ! While the Door County Wine Trail itself doesn’t offer a tour, you can pick up a map at the Destination Door County office or check it out here to get an idea of where the wineries are all located before heading out on your trip! From there, while you’re traveling throughout Door County you can plan to make your stops when you want and at whatever locations you see fit.

Two Wineries You Can’t-Miss

While planning your trip along the Door County Wine Tour, two wineries that you can’t miss out on are Door Peninsula Winery and Harbor Ridge Winery . These two locations offer unique and historic visits to each place and are definitely an experience you won’t want to miss.

First up is Door Peninsula Winery which opened in 1974 and we can definitely say… They’ve grown! The winery was once a former two-room schoolhouse that was built in 1868 and closed its doors in 1962. We know you might be wondering, ‘How does a schoolhouse make for a place to make wine?’. Well, Mark Fehls and Tom Alberts actually decided upon the location due to the thick basement walls and the Victorian-era architecture that the building held.

Now the winery produces a little over 200 thousand gallons of wine each year and has become one of Wisconsin’s top producers. Door Peninsula produces over 60 different wines and ciders and you can taste these at one of their two tasting rooms to really get a bit of history!

Next, we need to talk more about Harbor Ridge Winery ! This log cabin winery opened in 2010 and is nestled right in the beautiful Door County. While things have changed over the years, a key part that has stayed consistent is their top sellers! The first two wines that the winery introduced, Knockin’ Heads Red and Mademoiselle, are still some of the top sellers today.

In 2012, the winery expanded and built a facility that was dedicated to primarily making the wines they were selling which gave them the ability to expand into a selection of premium barrel-aged wines. A few years ago, new owners took over and continued to build the winery along with installing a vineyard. Harbor Ridge Winery now holds approximately 70 barrels and two stainless steel tanks for production and offers a selection of over 20 wines. There is a variety of award-winning wines and you can choose from sweet, semi-sweet, dry, or barrel-aged making this a special stop along the trail with plenty of options!

Things To Do Along Your Tour

The best part about Door County and the wine trail is that it lies right along the Door County Coastal Byway. This scenic highway goes through the entire county offering beautiful and breathtaking views throughout. Along with that, there are plenty of stops to be made while venturing out to the different wineries like stopping for delicious cheeses or visiting orchards too!

Renards has become an iconic Wisconsin cheese and in Door County, you can definitely try it for yourself. Chris Renard is a third-generation cheesemaker and is well known for the neat blends of cheeses they make along with aged cheeses.

And while you’re in Door County, you have to make a stop to visit Seaquist Orchards . This multi-generational family business started back in the early 1900s by planting cherry trees! The farm now has about 1,000 acres of tart cherries and over 50 acres of apples and sweet cherries.

Another cheesy location you can’t miss on the Door County Coastal Byway is the Door Artisan Cheese . The cheese company showcases the craft of cheesemaking (right on site!) and features select cheeses from around the world. They’ve even blasted out their own cheese caves 18 feet below the surface where they now age many of their award-winning cheeses!

I’ve been to Napa and Sonoma, and Door County is right up there with its peaceful and picturesque atmosphere. And at the same time, the wineries in Door County offer a unique approachable and laid back vibe that gives them the perfect Wisconsin twist.”

Wine is becoming a true staple in Wisconsin but especially in Door County. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a week-long stay in Door County, you need to travel along the coastal byway and make stops along the wine trail! While visiting, don’t forget to make your way to some of the best cheese shops in Wisconsin. We also pick you up at your place and drop you back off.  This way you won't have to worry about getting around, parking, or even planning.  Just tell us where to pick you up and we'll do the rest.  We're your easy way to see Door County rain or shine.

No two day trips will ever be the same since we do not use a cookie cutter approach to touring.  If a particular group wants to do one more wine stop, shop a little more, or go on a hike, we will modify the tour at that time to incorporate alternatives and options that meet the entire groups wants/needs as we are able.

In other words, you have a voice in deciding exactly what you do or see on our day trips.

Of Course There May Be Seasonal ...irregularities!

You may notice that there is no exact itinerary for our day trip.   (only this sample itinerary!)

Of course we will take you to all of the iconic must-see Door County scenic locations like Cave Point and Peninsula Park, but you can't have a flexible tour with a rigid schedule.  DC is a dynamic area that has a variety of elements to experience, and some days are just better than others for some things.  In addition, due to the irregular nature of restaurant and other businesses hours, an exact itinerary is not possible.  Restaurants, shop stops, and activities are determined on a day-by-day, tour-by-tour basis to ensure you get timely service at locations that are open, have adequate staffing, and will give you the best impression of Door County on the DAY you visit.

Let's just say we take you up one side of the peninsula and down the other, with lots of stops in between!   ;-)

There will usually be at least one stop specifically designated as a meal stop.  Meals are on your own but we let them know your coming for the best experience possible.

We will also ask groups if they prefer to grab small meals throughout the day rather than take the time to take in a sit down meal. There are plenty of opportunities to grab small meals all along our journey and  if you can eat as we go, you'll see more.

W e encourage you to bring something to eat, snacks, etc... our tours are fast paced and we are constantly moving so absolutely, bring something to eat or something to drink along.  You'll need the energy. :)

Door County Trolley Tours

door county drinking tours

One of the many unique elements about Door County is all the locally owned and operated wineries. For a cold-weather climate, who knew that growing grapes to make wine would even be an option? While there are countless wineries for you to choose from, the Door County Trolley Tours provide you with the opportunity to visit and try some wine all within a few hours.

I have had the opportunity to partake in many Door County Trolley Tours over the years and needless to say, it’s a great way to see and experience what Door County has to offer. The Door County Trolley offers an array of tours including scenic (lighthouses, spring blossom), ghost, wine, spirits and brunch tours (just to name a few).

Things I love about the Door County Trolley Tours

The Trolley Drivers Sitting on a trolley with a bunch of strangers for a few hours can seem overwhelming and boring sometimes, but the trolley drivers break the ice and make it fun! Not only do they play great tunes throughout the journey (shoutout to Alex for letting us control the jukebox once), but they also give insight and history to the area during the drive (with a little humor of course). They make the drive between stops engaging and fun, but most of all they keep everyone on track (and on time!) so that you get the most of out of your trolley experience.

Variety of wineries, pubs & brewhouses I have partaken in a lot of tours during my Bachelorette party days, and I have never been to the same winery, pubs & brewhouse twice. There are so many different places to experience in Door County and I feel like the trolley really makes an effort to have you experience and see the best places in the county. You won’t find a bad stop in the whole agenda, I guarantee it.

Seasonal Tours The Trolley Tours cover all of the seasonal events that make Door County so magical. In the fall, the ghost tours and scenic tours allow you to take in the breathtaking colors while getting mildly spooked! During the winter months, the sleigh/carriage ride tours allow you to see the beauty of winter in Door County while drinking great wine and enjoying the fresh winter air. In the spring, enjoy the cherry blossoms and check out a scenic tour of the lighthouses.

The Views of Door County If there is one thing that sets Door County above the rest (in my opinion), it’s the landscape in which makes it uniquely memorable. The Trolleys take all of the back, winding roads so you can truly see the landscape that makes Door County special. Rolling hills, beautiful glens, breathtaking views of the lake; they make sure you see it all. If there is any trip where you should really put your phone away to truly take it all in, it’s this one.

Things to be aware when partaking in a Door County Trolley Tour

Book your tickets in advance and arrive early These trolley tours book up  really quick especially during the summer months. If you are not a planner, this is not what you will want to hear, but  you need to book your tickets well in advance . There have been many times where we have been up there, looking for something to do… we look at a trolley tour one minute and then when we go to book an hour later, and the tour is sold out and seats are gone!

The trolley station has a ton of really good Door County knickknacks, apparel, etc. for trolley riders to buy. I highly recommend you arrive early to look through the shop, buy yourself a cocktail (bring your own insulated tumbler – you’ll thank me later) and mill around a bit before your trolley departs because it gets really busy and crowded inside very fast.

Beware, shopping is involved If you are looking for a tour that is going to take you to five wineries, breweries or pubs with nothing in between then this tour isn’t for you. Majority of the tour stops go to wineries and/or places with shopping nearby. If you’re looking for short, quick stops where you can try all the wine, I would personally recommend you hire a friend to drive you around. These tours usually include 2-3 stops and include downtime to shop and enjoy. If leisurely tours are not your thing, then the trolleys are not for you.

Lunch is not included on every tour If you love day drinking, but not on an empty stomach then you should see if your tour package includes lunch. You can get yourself into a whole heap of trouble if you don’t eat beforehand; therefore, I would recommend eating before you go. Some tours do offer lunch at the English Inn (salad, sandwich or pasta options available), but majority of the tours do not. Highly recommend planning ahead since the key to a great day of day drinking is a full stomach.

Revenge of the Bachelorette Parties With Door County now becoming  the Wisconsin destination for Bachelorette parties, just know there is a really high chance there will be one party if not more, on your trolley (especially if there is drinking involved). As someone who has been a member of these groups multiple times, they are usually always on their best behavior, but just note there always tends to be a lot of them and they can sometimes get loud & rowdy.

door county drinking tours

There are so many great activities to do and experience throughout Door County, and the Door County Trolley Tours is one way to experience some of the best the Cape Cod of the Midwest has to offer. Peninsula State Park

We spent a good portion of the tour in Peninsula State Park (Wisconsin’s most popular state park). One of the reasons for its popularity is the Sunset Bike Path, a 9.6-mile crushed limestone trail running through the boreal forest, cedar wetlands, and meadows out to the beach.

Our guide told us that the winding roads through Peninsula State Park were designed to encourage visitors to meander and take their time.

There are also miles of hiking and biking trails, snowshoe trails, cross-country ski trails, and rugged off-road mountain bike trails. In the winter, the upper roads are closed to cars but open to snowmobiles.

Our trolley tour also took us past the 65-foot Eagle Tower. Visitors may climb the stairs to the top or take the 800-foot ramp to the observation deck.

More Fun Facts About Door County

  • The Niagara Escarpment is a massive limestone cliff ridge running from New York State (its name comes from the cliffs of Niagara Falls) through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It’s the very foundation of Door County.
  • Fish Creek was the first big tourist destination in Door County, and early visitors arrived by steamboat.
  • When National Geographic published a photograph with a feature entitled “Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, A Kingdom So Delicious” in 1969, Door County exploded into a wildly popular USA travel destination.
  • Door County has 11 lighthouses , four of which can be toured.
  • Legend has it that Door County’s name comes from the narrow and treacherous strait between the northern tip of the peninsula and Washington Island. The unpredictable waves and currents and underwater rocks caused many a shipwreck and death over the years. As a result, the passage was dubbed Porte Des Morts (Death’s Door, in English), and the name, though shortened to just ‘Door,’ stuck.
  • Summer theater is alive and well in Door County, with two outdoor theaters showing live performances all season long.
  • Typically the second or third week of October is the prime leaf-peeping season, and in Door County, the vibrant colors last longer—up to two weeks.

Our trolley ride took us through several charming villages, and our guide shared lots of fun facts and history about each one, as well as recommendations on where to eat.

We learned about seafood boils, supper clubs, farm markets, and more. Here’s a tip for whitefish fans: At the Post Office restaurant, they’ll ask you if you want your fish de-boned!

At the end of the tour, he mentioned the many other Door County Trolley Tours available: food and drink-themed, ghosts, true crime (the six most gruesome murders in the county), a lighthouse tour, holiday-themed, and a shortened family ride for those with young children.

The Ultimate Guide to Door County's Charming Towns and Islands

Without giving up on sweet cherry wine and fish boils, the legendary peninsula has discovered its cool side. We'll show you where to find it—town by picturesque town.

Lauren Sieben is a freelance writer and journalist in Milwaukee. A native of the Chicago suburbs, Lauren has also lived and worked in Iowa, Spain and Washington, D.C. She now resides in (and writes about) Milwaukee.

A full moon hangs overhead as I drive toward the northern tip of Door County. I've come to spot stars—the real kind . One of only 195 places in the world designated an International Dark Sky Park, Newport State Park is one of the Midwest's prime destinations for catching constellations, shooting stars and other astronomical wonders. They're not kidding about the darkness.

Even with my car's headlights on, I have to strain my eyes to see the road. Once I arrive, I quickly park and kill the engine. The moon, shining like a stadium light over Lake Michigan, has technically sullied the view. But to my city-dweller eyes, the sky is still inky and clear. I walk a path to the lake and can tell the location of other people only by their voices.

Waves lap at an invisible shoreline as I approach the water; everything feels vast and boundaryless in the dark. I'm suddenly minuscule, sandwiched between the lake before me and the blinking stars above. This version of Door County is a world away from the one I entered earlier in the day, with bumper-to-bumper traffic stretching from Egg Harbor to Sister Bay, the peninsula's tourism epicenter. If you vacationed here as a kid, you probably remember Sister Bay because of Al Johnson's —the Swedish breakfast-lunch spot with goats grazing on a grass roof. In the last few years, the log-cabin restaurant has expanded its empire across an entire block facing the bay. A sprawling beer garden offers lawn games and bar food, and a polished gift shop sells Marimekko wares and hygge home decor alongside branded Al Johnson's hoodies. Visitors who haven't traveled to Door County since the early aughts might not recognize it today. You can still find the lace doilies and cherry pie, but you'll also discover businesses that cater to a new generation of vacationers— you're never too far from a hoppy IPA on tap, vegetable forward small plates or a stylish Airbnb.

Once-sleepy towns like Egg Harbor and Baileys Harbor buzz with cafes and breweries. Ephraim, a famously dry village until 2016, is now home to bars and restaurants serving natural wine and craft beer. You can escape into a remote oasis at rentals like the quirky Binkhaven property in Ephraim—a vintage Nordic cottage surrounded by 13 acres of hardwood forest. The northern outposts of Ellison Bay and Gills Rock remain blissfully quiet. But the beauty of Door County is that you don't have to choose between the charm of yore and the chic attractions of today, or between bustle and serenity. The taprooms and fine dining coexist with the sunsets, lakefront trails, clear night skies and moments that transcend time.

So pick your flavor: A farm-to-table feast on the patio of a restored farmhouse while you sip a handcrafted cocktail? Or stargazing with the crickets in the obscurity of Newport State Park ? For me, that's easy—I'll take both.

Village by Village

Flanked by Lake Michigan on the east and Green Bay to the west, Door County stretches for 70 miles. Here's your guide to the towns along the peninsula's principal arteries—Highways 42 and 57.

Sturgeon Bay

The Vibe: The region's gateway has a more industrial feel—but also charming, old-timey storefronts.

Eat + Drink: Grab a cherry scone at 5&J Coffee House or a lavender latte at Lawlss Coffee and peruse the nearby art gallery. Bluefront Cafe serves the best lunch in town, with indulgent vegetarian options like the Portobello Reuben and the Brie sandwich with cherry jam.

Do: On Saturday mornings, the Farm and Craft Market pops up in Market Square with produce, baked goods and handmade items. Grab a pint at downtown's Starboard Brewing Company , Door County's first nanobrewery.

The Vibe: No longer just the town you pass on your way north, Egg Harbor buzzes with shops and dining.

Eat + Drink: One Barrel Brewing from Madison opened a taproom here with a massive beer garden and cozy firepits. Soak up your brew with a wood-fired pizza from Pizza Bros next door—pick from a menu of classic pies or build your own. Take your taste buds to NoLa at Big Easy Bagel and Beignet , serving sugar-dusted beignets.

Do: Pick up a bottle of whiskey at Hatch Distilling Company or browse shops selling fine cheese, olive oil and gifts. On Friday mornings, shop the Farmers Market at Harbor View Park, a great place to later watch the sunset.

The Vibe: You're getting into the thick of things now, with scenic Peninsula State Park and a downtown full of bars, restaurants and boutiques.

Stay: The newly renovated motel rooms at Cedar Court Inn offer unbeatable proximity to downtown at a modest rate, or reserve one of their roomier suites or cottages for extra amenities like a fireplace or kitchen.

Eat: Highlights include Barringer's for a white-tablecloth dinner (don't skip the decadent layered carrot cake) or pizza at the original Wild Tomato location. In the morning, head to Fika Bakery and Coffeehouse for the drool-worthy case of pecan sticky buns and gooey cinnamon rolls. Order a custard sundae at Not Licked Yet Frozen Custard , where a secret sanctuary behind the parking lot offers excellent views of the herons and ducks in Fish Creek.

Do: Sprawling Peninsula State Park is one of the area's most popular destinations. Anticipate a crowd on the weekends—and for good reason. Attractions include a lighthouse, bike trails, a sand beach, an outdoor theater, an 18-hole golf course, kayak rentals.

The Vibe: A tiny bayside town of 345 residents delivers big with sublime sunsets and fine food.

Eat + Drink: Start the day with Crab Eggs Benedict or Brioche French Toast at the fun and colorful Sip restaurant. When it's time for happy hour, sip a craft brew in the beer garden at Bad Moravian . Keep it classic for dinner and order carryout from longtime favorite Wilson's Restaurant and Ice Cream to eat at a picnic table across the street, overlooking the sparkling bay.

Do: On summer Mondays, the Evenings in Ephraim Concert Series features local musicians. BYO blanket or lawn chair and stick around to see colors paint the sky. For the architecturally curious, book a tour of Binkhaven , a 1960s Nordic-revival-style cabin adorned with rosemaling—a floral, folkloric painting technique—through the Ephraim Historical Foundation.

The Vibe: Little village, lots to do. The busiest strip in the peninsula draws families, couples and revelers with its quaint waterfront (and cute goats).

Stay: Make your home base in one of the minimalist-posh guest rooms at The DÖrr Hotel downtown. Nosh on a grab-and-go breakfast on your private patio, then pick up beach chairs and a cooler from the gear room before heading across the street for sunbathing and swimming in the bay.

Eat + Drink: Watch the goats munching on the grass roof at Al Johnson's before chowing down on Swedish pancakes with lingonberries. Build your own charcuterie board at the peninsula's newest wine destination, Twelve Eleven Wine Bar , where the back patio opens up into a bucolic wooded prairie. When you're ready for dinner, choose among steak, seafood, pizza, Mexican, bar grub and more—you've got many options.

Do: Play a game or two at Sister Bay Bowl, but brush up on the basics before you arrive; bowlers keep score by hand at this old-school alley. You'll feel like it's Christmas in July at Tannenbaum Holiday Shop while browsing ornaments on trees organized by theme (including zoo animals, sweets and snowmen).

Kevin J. Miyazaki

Ellison Bay

The Vibe: Removed from crowds, this quietly cool village near the end of the peninsula warrants a pitstop for a cold hard cider.

Eat + Drink: Pop into Island Orchard Cider for ferments made from local apples and pears. The apple cherry cider uses Door County montmorency cherries. A variety of noshes like Wisconsin cheeses, Nueske's meats, preserves and nuts make this a worthy stop to fill your picnic basket, too.

Do: Get into the fresh air at Ellison Bay Bluff County Park , where a walkway leads to a scenic overlook and limestone bluffs. On a rainy day, browse the dense shelves at William Caxton Ltd. Books , complete with that irresistible old-book smell.

The Vibe: The tourism bug hasn't yet bitten this tiny commercial fishing hub.

Eat: Charlie's Smokehouse , a 90-year-old family fish business, sells some of the best smoked fish in Door County. Get there early before they sell out of popular options like Atlantic salmon and whitefish.

Do: Embark on a Shoreline Scenic Cruises and Charter boat ride that departs from Gills Rock. Themed excursions include a lighthouse tour or a shipwreck sail.

Baileys Harbor

The Vibe: The place to be on the peninsula's east side swaps sunsets over Green Bay for sunrises over Lake Michigan.

Eat + Drink: Door County Brewing Company has an outdoor stage for live music and serves year-round favorites like Pallet Jack Cruiser and Vacationland. Grab a beer in the plant-filled taproom at Sway Brewing + Blending , which also operates a bakery in the mornings. Book a table for the New England-style lobster boil at Harbor Fish Market and Grille .

Do: Drive south for a beach day and a hike at Whitefish Dunes State Park . On your way in, stop at Cave Point County Park to admire the limestone cliffs—a geological masterpiece created from erosion over the last 400 million years.

Island Time

Discover Door County beyond the mainland.

Washington Island

Take a car ferry from the tip of the peninsula to visit Schoolhouse Beach, Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm and Stavkirke—an ornate church modeled after an ancient one in Norway built in 1150.

Rock Island

From Washington Island, catch another ferry to Rock Island, a remote state park with no cars and no bikes, but plenty of hiking, swimming and rustic campsites.

Cana Island

Outside of Baileys Harbor, take a wagon ride on the back of a tractor across the shallow Lake Michigan causeway. Visit a lighthouse and the new interpretative center, part of the Door County Maritime Museum .
