How to turn off SafeSearch on Mac

safe search off in safari

Here is a detailed description of Google’s SafeSearch feature and a walkthrough to disable it on Mac if it’s causing inconveniences.

What is SafeSearch?

SafeSearch is a feature geared toward filtering explicit results from Google search. In particular, it hides materials that contain violence or pornography. This is incredibly useful functionality for managed environments, such as enterprise or school networks in which users are not supposed to access NSFW content. It is also an important element of Google’s parental controls service called Family Link. If the corresponding app is running on a supervised device, SafeSearch is enabled by default if the user is under 13 years old. The web browsing restrictions can be set by a network admin or a Mac owner who wants to purge search results of links they deem inappropriate.

Google’s SafeSearch service in action

Why turn off SafeSearch?

As useful as it is, SafeSearch is not flawless. Its algorithms aren’t ultimately accurate in identifying content that doesn’t belong on search engine results pages (SERPs) viewed by a kid or an employee during the workday. Also, some users think its filtering can be blown out of proportion, in which case some materials are wrongfully flagged as explicit and relevant links aren’t displayed when you are looking for specific information. One more important aspect is that the service affects the freedom of finding and accessing websites. Nowadays, users dislike it when there are strings attached and other encroachments that hamper full-fledged web surfing routine.

In addition, this term has some shades of ambiguity when viewed from the cybersecurity angle. One of the long-running browser hijack campaigns involves Mac malware that redirects Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and other browsers to SafeSearch.net without permission. This is a junk page mimicking a typical search engine and trying to piggyback on the name of Google’s well-known content filtering feature in question. Its authors pursue illegal monetization of the intercepted Internet traffic.

On a side note, a similar massive browser redirect scheme involves a potentially unwanted application (PUA) that forces hits to Yahoo Search via affiliated garbage services like Safe Finder, Chill-Tab, Searchmine, Search Pulse, or TapuFind. This quandary is associated with APIs of ad networks, which allows the crooks in charge to convert their misdemeanor into profit. Yet another concern that fits the mold of a plot parasitizing legitimate search providers is the Bing redirect wave . It harnesses several notorious sites, such as SearchMarquis.com and SearchBaron.com, to forward the victim’s traffic in the wrong direction.

With that said, before deciding to turn off SafeSearch on Mac, it makes sense to distinguish between benign and malware-related implications of the issue. If malicious code has taken over your search preferences, it must be removed from the system. In the event you aren’t okay with Google’s filtering your search results to get explicit stuff out of the way, use the following method to deactivate it.

If you feel like SafeSearch is imposing limitations on your web surfing experience, it’s very easy to turn off. Just follow the steps below.

Go to Google’s search settings

  • If the toggle next to the Explicit results filter option is in the off position, it means that adult materials and images of violence will be henceforth making it to your search results when you look for them. It’s easy to re-enable this setting at a later point if you so desire.

Most search engines have a settings or preferences section where you can adjust various features, including SafeSearch. This is usually accessible from the search engine’s homepage.

The SafeSearch option is typically easy to find within the settings menu. It may be under a section labeled “Search Settings,” “Preferences,” or something similar.

Once you find the SafeSearch setting, there should be a simple switch or checkbox that allows you to turn it off. Make sure to save your changes if required.

Learn how SafeSearch works

On Google Search, SafeSearch can detect explicit content like adult content and graphic violence.

  • This is the default setting when Google’s systems indicate that you may be under 18.
  • This setting helps blur explicit images, but explicit text and links can show if they're relevant for your search.
  • If SafeSearch is "Off," you’ll find relevant results for your search, even if they’re explicit.

If you can’t change your SafeSearch setting, it’s because it’s controlled by your account, device, or network administrator. For example:

  • For child and student accounts, parents and schools can lock SafeSearch in "Filter."
  • Public Wi-Fi networks, like at an airport or library, can also lock SafeSearch in "Filter."
  • Parental controls on your operating system and antivirus software may override your individual SafeSearch setting.

Learn who can change your SafeSearch setting

  • If you manage your own Google Account, you can manage your SafeSearch setting.
  • If your parent helps manage your account in the Family Link app, your parent can manage your SafeSearch setting .
  • If you’re signed in to a Google Workspace for Education account and are under 18 or are associated with a K-12 institution, your administrator can manage your SafeSearch setting .
  • Administrators of your device or network can lock the SafeSearch in "Filter."

Manage SafeSearch settings for others

The SafeSearch is set to "Filter" by default for children who are signed in to an account managed with Family Link and those who are under 13, or the applicable age in your country or region . There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.

If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.

Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future . Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.

The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C :

/Library/LaunchDaemons

In the Finder, select

Go ▹ Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V . You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return .

A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form

com. something .daemon.plist

com. something .helper.plist

Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.

If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:

/Library/LaunchAgents

In this folder, there may be a file named

com. something .agent.plist

where the string something is the same as before.

If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files —nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.

Don't delete the "LaunchAgents " or " LaunchDaemons " folder or anything else inside either one .

The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.

Open this folder:

/Library/Application Support

If it has a subfolder named just

where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.

Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it .

Finally, in this folder:

/System/Library/Frameworks

there may an item named exactly

v.framework

It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.

Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it .

If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.

If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.

The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org .

This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent , or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.

In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.

Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked

Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)

Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)

if it's not already checked.

How to turn off Google SafeSearch: Explicit images to be blurred for all users

safe search off in safari

Google has switched on a new setting that blurs explicit imagery by default in Search results.

The feature is part of Google’s SafeSearch settings, which are designed to prevent people from accidentally viewing graphically violent or pornographic images online.

Google announced in February that the blur filter, which was previously turned on by default for signed-in users under 18, would gradually be expanded to everyone. That day has arrived as the new setting is now being activated worldwide.

The filter applies to everyone, regardless of whether you are signed in through your Google account or not.

As it is a tool built by Google, the feature only works on Google Search results, and doesn’t block or blur material you find on other search engines or websites you visit directly.

However, if you don’t want to have the filter on, you can always just turn it off in your settings. Here’s what you need to do:

How to turn off Google SafeSearch

The first time you encounter blurred images in your search results, you should see a label at the top of the page that reads “SafeSearch blurring is on.”

Next to it, will be a “manage setting” button that directs you to the filter’s controls, where you can choose between three options.

These include “Filter” for blocking out all explicit images, text and links; “Blur” for blurring explicit content, but not text and links; and “Off” which shows all results even if they’re explicit.

How do I turn off Google SafeSearch on my phone?

On Android and iPhone , you can find the SafeSearch settings by following this link .

Alternatively, if you’re using the Google app, you can turn off the filter by tapping your profile picture or initials, and then selecting settings, and SafeSearch. Here, you’ll find the same controls as those listed above.

If you don’t see the options, or if they’re locked, it could be because you’re signed in on a public WiFi network, or on a school or work computer, where someone else is in charge of the filters.

Is Google SafeSearch automatically on?

The toughest Google SafeSearch setting is only automatically enabled for signed-in users under 18. But, the explicit image blur is on by default for everyone.

On a personal device, SafeSearch can be disabled by anyone, as long as you’re not using a supervised account with parental controls.

By making SafeSearch blur the default option for all users, Google is trying to ensure that children and teens don’t inadvertently view explicit content, seeing as some people don’t use Google while logged into an account.

Google SafeSearch bugs

As some users spotted during the setting’s initial rollout, Google SafeSearch was blurring images even after they had manually disabled it.

We also came across the issue during our tests in late June. At the time, Google confirmed to The Standard that people were encountering issues with the feature. It said that this was due to a short delay in web pages updating as the changes were expanded.

“We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve it as quickly as we can,” a Google spokesperson said.

How To Enable/Disable SafeSearch On Device And Search Engines

Enable Disable Safe Search

SafeSearch is a feature offered by search engines and several devices that can either allow or block explicit content flagged by them. When enabled, SafeSearch blocks lewd content from showing, and when disabled, any relevant content can come up in your searches, regardless of its sensitivity.

Today we are going to show you how to enable or disable SafeSearch across multiple platforms and search engines. The processes are pretty simple, only if you know where to look for these settings. But before we do, there are some misconceptions and details we’d like to shed some light on.

Table of Contents

How does SafeSearch Work?

SafeSearch works by blocking out the content which has been flagged as inappropriate by the search engine provider. This includes any text, images, or videos that have explicit content and may not be age-appropriate for the user.

That said, when the feature is enabled, any content which has been cataloged by the search engine and marked as explicit or vulgar is automatically filtered out in the search results.

Enable/Disable SafeSearch in Web Browsers

This section addresses the misconception many users may have about SafeSearch and a browser’s ability to enable/disable it.

Web browsers , such as Google Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge, do not provide the SafeSearch feature. Instead, it is the search engine working behind these browsers which have the ability to filter the search content.

Therefore, no web browser directly has any links with Safesearch. However, they do provide low-level filtration such as age-appropriate content in Microsoft Edge, and safe browsing in Chrome for more security, etc.

Similarly, the devices, like a Windows computer or an Android device, do not directly provide SafeSearch functionalities, yet you can still control the content on some devices. This is because these devices have integrated search engines that you can manage from the device’s settings. For example, Windows uses Bing.com to provide search results, and Android devices use Google.com.

Now that this misconception is cleared, let us show you how to turn SafeSearch on or off on various platforms.

Enable/Disable SafeSearch on Windows 11/10

The Windows operating system allows you to control SafeSearch directly from the Settings app. It offers you 3 levels:

Moderate is selected by default. However, you can change this through the Settings app, or adopt more aggressive approaches if that doesn’t work.

From Settings App

Navigate to the following:

In Windows 11:

In Windows 10:

Here, select one of the options under  SafeSearch .

Set SafeSearch intensity

This is perhaps the most convenient method to configure SafeSearch on a Windows computer. Note that this won’t affect your search results when using Bing.com or Google.com on a web browser. For that, you can refer to the relevant sections below.

From Group Policy

Open the Group Policy editor by typing in  gpedit.msc  in the Run Command box.

gpedit msc

Now navigate to the following from the left pane:

In the right pane, double-click “ Set the SafeSearch setting for Search .”

Open Group Policy

From the popup, select  Enabled , and then set the intensity from the drop-down menu in the  Options  section. When done, click  Apply  and  Ok .

Configure and save policy

To implement the changes, run the following cmdlet in an  elevated Command Prompt :

gpupdate force latest

From Windows Registry

Another way to go about it is by making manual changes to the Windows Registry. Here is how:

You will now see the DWORD “SafeSearchMode” in the right pane. Double-click it and change its  Value Data  to one of the following options:

  • 0 – Disable SafeSearch.
  • 1 – Moderate

Set value data

Now reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Open the Bing search engine in any web browser.

Click on the 3 lines in the top-right corner of the page to expand the menu and then click SafeSearch .

Enable/Disable SafeSearch On DuckDuckGo

Follow these steps to change the SafeSearch settings on the DuckDuckGo search engine:

Open the DuckDuckGo search engine on any web browser.

Click on the 3 lines in the top-right corner of the page.

Expand the menu

Click All Settings .

Open all settings

Now expand the drop-down menu in front of Safe Search and select one of the following options:

  • Moderate (Default)

Set SafeSearch setting for DuckDuckGo

Closing Words

SafeSearch is a feature many of us might not be familiar with since most of the search engines already have it set to “Moderate.” However, some might need to change it to “Strict” in case they want more filtration for when their children are using the devices.

In contrast, one might need to disable SafeSearch to view some contents which previously weren’t available to them.

That said, even Google claims that its SafeSearch feature is not 100% accurate and may sometimes slip in inappropriate content even when the feature is enabled. Therefore, we believe that this feature still has a long way to go till the time it can automatically detect and block explicit content using Artificial Intelligence.

Before we dive into how to turn off safe search on Chrome, let’s find out what SafeSearch is.

Search engines like Google have a SafeSearch tool that helps remove offensive or explicit content from search results.

SafeSearch is designed to offer a safer online experience, especially for children or people who don’t want to see such content.

When SafeSearch is turned on, the search engine will filter out results that can be offensive, pornographic, or violent.

You can usually set SafeSearch on or off, depending on your preference and the type of content you want to see in your search results.

SafeSearch filters explicit or improper content using predefined standards to prevent it from appearing in search results.

The search engine’s SafeSearch algorithm analyzes web pages and websites when you type a query to see if any of them include anything considered sensitive, such as violent content, adult content, or explicit images.

The search results are filtered to exclude web pages that satisfy the criteria for explicit content.

You can decide whether to turn SafeSearch on or off depending on your needs and browsing habits. These are the pros and cons of turning off the feature:

  • You can access a wider selection of search results, including everything SafeSearch would have excluded.
  • More flexible to look for specific subjects or content without restrictions.
  • Increased risk of exposure to explicit or inappropriate content, particularly for sensitive users or children.
  • You may come across offensive or harmful content that could be upsetting or uncomfortable.
  • Less control over the types of content that appear in search results could expose users to undesirable content by accident.

I went on my first safari trip to South Africa. I won't make these 10 mistakes next time.

  • I spent a week on safari in South Africa , visiting three different reserves.
  • I found that planning was essential and that I always needed to have my camera ready.
  • Next time I'd bring warmer clothing and a buff for dust control.

Insider Today

I spent a week on safari in South Africa, visiting three different reserves.

It was a thrilling adventure I'll never forget, and I got to see incredible creatures such as hyenas, elephants, and lions.

It's no wonder more travelers are looking to weave game reserves into their trips. According to the most recent data collected by the travel agency Go2Africa , interest in beach and safari combo trips was up 20% from 2022 to 2023 alone.

But although the trip was great, it wasn't always easy — and I had a few missteps from the planning phase to the wildlife observation.

Here are mistakes I made on my trip that that everyone should avoid on their first safari .

We booked our trip during a busy part of the year.

I try to avoid traveling during holidays , which often means more crowds. Unfortunately, we ended up booking during Easter break, which was the end of summer in the southern hemisphere.

The lodges were full and busy with lots of kids, and the prices were higher. We still had a great time, but if we'd booked different dates — maybe during a low season — we may have paid less for a more private experience.

The mornings were cold, even in summer.

Our morning game drives started before sunrise in an open-air jeep.

The safari guide was wearing shorts, so I thought I would be comfortable matching that. Wrong! I was so cold on our first ride.

I quickly learned that although it was summer, a beanie and down jacket would've been cozy on the drive.

I missed photo opportunities because my camera wasn't ready.

I knew I wanted to keep my camera out at all times when on a game drive. But after several hours of driving, we were approaching the gate and I tucked my phone away.

That's when we turned a corner and saw a large white rhino facing us in the middle of the road. It was a dramatic moment I captured in my head, but I didn't have time to snap a photo before it darted into the bushes.

Next time, I'd be better prepared for animals that might pop up near the exit.

I had no idea how dusty the roads were going to be.

The safari terrain changed based on where the guide drove each day, and some routes were quite dusty.

After a day of exploring, I felt as if I had dust in my ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. Sunglasses helped shield my eyes, but I wish I'd brought a buff to cover the rest of my face.

Driving between game reserves made me more tired than I'd expected.

Our safari adventure included visits to three different wildlife reserves, and we rented a car to get between them.

On each transition day, we had a morning game drive, then a drive to get to the next reserve, and then an evening game drive there.

That was a lot of sitting, and by the time I got to the evening game drive, I was tired. Next time, I may space my schedule out more.

I made the classic mistake of leaving the car door open when unloading the luggage.

At one point, I walked my bags inside my accommodations, leaving the door open behind me. When I came out, the neighbors were taking photos of a monkey inside my car.

He was quick because, fortunately, I didn't have any food in the car for him to run off with.

Now I know to stay on top of shutting and locking my car doors when at a game reserve.

We got too close to elephants.

Animals can be unpredictable and safaris are not like a zoo. I learned how quickly a situation can change while watching a herd of elephants eating in Kruger National Park.

They started crossing the road in front of my car, and a large one turned to look right at us and started shaking his head. It seemed clearly displeased with our presence.

I flipped the car into reverse faster than you can say "elephant," but it was a scary moment.

Consuming too much liquid can be risky.

safe search off in safari

Evening safari drives include a stop in the bush around sunset for a "sundowner" beverage. One of the nights, my drink proved to be too much liquid for my bladder.

The problem was that we were following a pride of lions, so there was no chance of hopping off the truck to relieve myself.

I was able to hold it, but next time I'll be more careful with the amount of liquid I consume before and during bush drives.

I was caught off guard by load shedding.

safe search off in safari

Load shedding is the name for scheduled power outages in South Africa that help prevent the power grid from being overloaded.

Some places have backup generators or solar panels to alleviate power disruptions, but I learned not to expect that to always be the case.

When the power turned off during our trip, I found myself sitting in complete darkness. I scrambled for my phone flashlight, but I could've avoided that panic by plugging in the emergency light that was provided.

It's 2024 and we're just getting round to stopping browsers insecurely accessing 0.0.0.0

Can't reach someone's private server on localhost from outside no problem.

A years-old security oversight has been addressed in basically all web browsers – Chromium-based browsers, including Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, WebKit browsers like Apple's Safari, and Mozilla's Firefox.

It can be – and reportedly has been – exploited by miscreants to get access to software services they shouldn't have access to. It affects the aforementioned browsers on macOS and Linux – and possibly others – but at least not on Windows.

A firm called Oligo Security flagged up the vulnerability this month and named it a 0.0.0.0 Day because it involves the 0.0.0.0 IPv4 address. And it appears at least some attackers have been abusing this flaw since at least the late 2000s – judging by this Mozilla Bugzilla thread from that era, which is still listed as open.

According to Oligo, each of the three browsers' teams have promised to block all access to 0.0.0.0 and also enact their own mitigations to close the localhost loophole.

safe search off in safari

The problem is as simple as this: If you open a malicious webpage in a vulnerable browser on a vulnerable OS, that page can fire off requests to 0.0.0.0 and a port of its choosing. And if you have servers or other services running locally on your box on that port, those requests will go to it.

So if you have some service running on your macOS or Linux workstation on port 11223, and you assume no one can reach it because it's behind your firewall, and that your big-name browser blocks outside requests to localhost, guess again because that browser will route a 0.0.0.0:11223 request by a malicious page you're visiting to your service.

It's quite a long shot, in terms of practical exploitation – but you wouldn't want to find out the hard way that some site hit your local endpoint by luck. In fact, it's wryly amusing this is a thing in 2024.

There are supposed to be security mechanisms in place to prevent external websites from reaching your localhost in this way. Specifically, the Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) specification, and then the more recent Private Network Access (PNA) , which is used by browsers to distinguish between public and non-public networks, and fortify CORS by restricting outside sites' ability to communicate with servers on private networks and host machines.

The Oligo team, however, was able to bypass PNA. The researchers set up a dummy HTTP server running on 127.0.0.1 aka localhost, on port 8080, and was then able to access it from an external public site using JavaScript, by sending a request to 0.0.0.0:8080.

"This means public websites can access any open port on your host, without the ability to see the response," Oligo security researcher Avi Lumelsky reported .

In response to this, Chrome will block access to 0.0.0.0 starting with Chromium 128, and Google will gradually roll out this change to be completed by Chrome 133. Apple has made changes to its WebKit open source software that block access to 0.0.0.0.

Mozilla doesn't have an immediate fix, and has not implemented PNA in Firefox. According to Olgio, Mozilla did change the Fetch specification (RFC) to block 0.0.0.0 following its report.

A Mozilla spokesperson sent The Register the following statement via email:

We are aware that there are services deployed to hosts or local networks that are vulnerable to attack from websites. These services rely on being inaccessible as their only means of defense. The CORS protocol contains safeguards against this risk, but those safeguards contain a number of key exclusions that were deemed necessary to avoid breaking pre-existing usage.

An unspecified address ("0.0.0.0" in IPv4 or "::" in IPv6) is sometimes usable as a means of accessing a service on a device in place of a "loopback" address of "localhost", "127.0.0.1", or "::1". Use of an unspecified address is therefore a specific case of this more general problem.

Mozilla is supportive of efforts to improve the security of these vulnerable services by improving the restrictions in CORS. However, we are aware that imposing tighter restrictions comes with a significant risk of introducing compatibility problems. As the standards discussion and work to understand those compatibility risks is ongoing, Firefox has not implemented any of the proposed restrictions. We plan to continue our engagement in that process.

According to Oligo, this research makes a strong case for PNA.

"Until PNA fully rolls out, public websites can dispatch HTTP requests using Javascript to successfully reach services on the local network," Lumelsky wrote. "For that to change, we need PNA to be standardized, and we need browsers to implement PNA according to that standard." ®
