I would highly recommend this to anyone with a love for nature, exploration and a reasonable fitness level. My tour guide, Nadal, was great company, as I was travelling alone, I don’t think I could’ve done it all without him. He made for great conversation, was very entertaining and took some great photos for me, incredible! He and the driver even gave me food recommendations to try out in Malang, and they were fantastic! I highly recommend IDN Trip Experiences and if I’m ever in this part of Indonesia again, I will definitely be using them again. I went in early March, and the morning was a bit sunny and ended up being perfect, we even saw a rainbow at the waterfall while at the panorama view at the start! I finished my tour at noon, after which it started to pour down, so keep that in mind, as climbing while it’s raining is dangerous! Be prepared for an early start, definitely recommend having some breakfast to power through. A bottle of water was provided, but another bottle would be recommended. There are vendors sprinkled throughout that you can get drinks and in some cases food for cash. Note that the toilets at the car park cost 3k Rupiah, so definitely make sure to bring cash, preferably in smaller amounts than the 100k notes I had! Definitely make sure to bring extra clothes for the journey back, a towel also helps and I recommend leaving these in the car if possible, to avoid them getting wet. I had a waterproof backpack and things still got damp inside. You will get soaked purely from the spray from the waterfalls, even more so if you push on to Goa Tetes cave, which is where the hike gets a lot more challenging, but it absolutely pays off! Also get appropriate footwear, you’ll be climbing slippery surfaces, wading through water currents and pools, you can even swim in one of them if you wish! The private tour worked for us as we were seeking more comfort. The driver and a guide were very young pairs, but courteous. The climbing to the crater would have been a real challenge without a horse's help. I see the young and fit had no problem getting up there, but I was glad I got help. The view to the mountain and crater from sunrise was something I would never forget. So please find time to do the tour when you are in Indonesia. We got picked up just before midnight at the train station in Surabaya as agreed by our guide Via and our driver. It took us 2 hours to get to the point where we swapped the car for the jeep. Since we got there early we waited at the little bar with some coffee /tea and fried bananas :) The hike took us about 10 minutes to the point where the magic almost happened. Unfortunately, we didn't see the sunrise as we planned but you can't do anything about the weather. We were just happy it didn't rain since we were in the middle of the rainy season. The view was still amazing afterward. After that, we went for a short drive and walk before climbing 250 stairs to Mt. Bromo crater. The place was not that busy so we were happy about that. We were served breakfast at the local restaurant and after that, it was time to head towards the waterfall. The Bromo area is full of nicely restored, vintage Toyota Land Cruisers. Our driver, an owner of an excellent medium blue example, came to our hotel to meet us at 3:00 AM. Soon, we were in a convoy of Land Cruisers making their way up the winding roads through the darkness to the view point. From area where he parked, we had to walk about a mile up the concrete pass. We came across a guide that offered to take us up to a superior viewing area. It was worth it, as we had an unobstructed view on the edge of the rim overlooking the biggest crater that contains the Mt. Bromo caldera and other volcanic mounds. Thankfully, the clouds settled down into the valley, giving us a good view of the steaming volcano in the morning light. The driver's have your name taped to the rear window to aid finding your Land Cruiser among the many parked in the area. From there we drove back down into the big crater, driving across the dry lake-bed in the fog, to do the 3 mile hike to the caldera rim. There is the option to take a horse to the caldera, but we enjoyed the walk. It was very scenic and we got back after such an adventure, to a nice breakfast at the hotel by 9:00 AM. She had a driver and car and pulled up and hustled us into the car and away we went. It was a LONG drive (so be prepared). You also have to switch to a 4WD jeep (ours was soooo cool). She had the perfect spot to stop and grab some hot tea (it was cold up there!) and a snack before we hiked the last little bit up for the view. There are several places to see the sun raise from and the one we had wasn’t packed at all, we had a great view, it wasn’t pushy with everybody trying for the one spot like I expected. We had all the time we wanted to take as many photos and poses as we wanted! Never rushed. We went from there to crater, rode some horses, hiked to the top and in took more photos! Again, Via gave lots of good advise, and we never felt lost or rushed, it was perfect. We finished off with the waterfall, which was exceptional (and they supplied ponchos so we didn’t get wet!). Description.

Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is in East Java, Indonesia.

This national park is named after its two mountains, Mount Semeru   (the highest in Java at 3,676m), Mount Bromo (the most popular) and the   Tengger people who inhabit the area.

Mount Semeru also known as Mahameru (“Great Mountain”), is one of   Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. What stands out most about this   mountain is the fact that it erupts periodically (and very reliably).   Every 20min or so, the volcano belches out a huge cloud of steam and   smoke, sometimes interspersed with ash and stones. Climbing Mount  Semeru  requires some planning and a permit from the national park  authority.  The mountain is often closed due to its highly active  nature.

Mount Bromo (2,329m) is easily recognized as the entire top has been   blown off and the crater inside constantly belches white sulfurous   smoke. It sits inside the massive Tengger caldera. with a diameter of   approximately 10km, surrounded by the Laut Pasir (Sea of Sand) of fine   volcanic sand. The overall effect is unsettlingly unearthly, especially   when compared to the lush green valleys all around the caldera.

The major access point is Cemoro Lawang (also Cemara Lawang or Cemora   Lawang – blame the East Javanese accent!) at the northeastern edge of   the caldera, but there are also trails from Tosari (northwest) and   Ngadas (southwest). The village of Ngadisari, on the road from   Probolinggo about 5.5km before Cemoro Lawang, marks the entrance to the   national park. Both Cemoro Lawang and Ngadisari are rather  picturesque,  with brightly-painted houses and flower beds outside.

Beautiful and powerful Madakaripura waterfall is one of the waterfalls in the area of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. It’s the biggest waterfall in East Java. The water has cascades from the dense forest above. You need to go 20 minutes and climb the cliffs before you can see the main waterfall. But the stunning glory of rumbling water going down from the cliff is worth the effort for sure!

To be precise, the Madakaripura is a set of seven waterfalls, the biggest cascade of which  falls from a height of 200 m . The bottom part of waterfall is no longer flowing streams of water, it turns into a mist of cold prickly rapid splashes.

A Spot for Nirvana

According to Negarakretagama, an ancient Javanese poem and chronicle, the land around  Madakaripura Waterfall  was given by the king to Gajah Mada, a legendary military commander and sage. Gajah Mada is believed to have used the waterfallas his favorite meditation spot. And eventually, it is here that he attained muksha – freedom from the worldly illusion and eternity in a place of death; what most Westerners would know under the Buddhist term “nirvana”. While there’s no shrine near the waterfall, the spot is considered sacred by kejawen (Javanese Indo-animism) believers. On auspicious dates, such as 1 Suro, night vigils and prayer rituals are conducted here.

Road to the Main Cascade

To get to the canyon with a 200-meter waterfall you have to  walk about a kilometer along a mountain river, and then another 500 meters along the river under other four waterfalls . Yes, that’s right, the one and only road goes through rocks under cold waterfalls. So prepare raincoats, camera protection and comfortable shoes which are going to be totally wet. It’s better to roll up your pants and jeans because the depth of the river can be up to the knee.

Local people offer everything you may need on parking : umbrellas, raincoats, slippers and guide service. The road itself is quite safe, so you don’t really need a guide, but locals don’t like those who refuse to pay. So it’s your choice: saved money  or good relationships. Like usual in Indonesia, the guide will not tell you stories, but he will help to cross the river and insure in dangerous areas. The price is negotiable; usually it’s about 50,000 rupees per person or about 100,000 rupees for a guide.

You can find warungs on the parking lot and after the bridge where “dry path” ends. A toilet is available only on the parking lot.

Prepare some money for this trip to Madakaripura. In addition to transportation, porters and entrance tickets and consumption and accommodation. The place to stay that we recommend and close to the waterfall is located in the Bromo area or staying in a tourist area around Malang and the Batu area. Public transport fares or motorbikes to Madakaripura do not reach Rp. 25,000. But if you rent a car from Probolinggo, it usually costs around Rp. 150,000 (PP, including drivers and fuel). For tickets to enter the Madakaripura waterfall, Rp. 5000 per person and if using a local guide service is charged Rp. 50,000 per porter. Of course this rate is not as expensive as when vacationing with children to Kidzania Jakarta, which requires funds of hundreds of thousands of rupiah per person during weekends.

What to Bring

Why is it very important to bring a change of clothes here? Of course, because traveling to a waterfall like Madakaripura is not pleasant if you don’t experience wetness. Put replacement clothes and pants into your backpack. No need to worry about heavy loads because there is a porter who will help carry and maintain your items. To avoid splashing water, several stalls provide umbrellas for visitors to rent. Documentation preparation. What a shame it is unfortunate if you don’t bring photographic equipment while visiting this most beautiful waterfall. Document your trip with a video and photo recording camera.

Madakaripura Waterfall is one of the tourist areas you can visit after the visit to Mount Bromo. With grandeur, is the perpetual waterfall will pour the water at any time in the “giant tube” which was in the depths of the Tengger Mountains valley.

How to Reach There

Unfortunately there is no public transportation that go to the waterfall. So you can either rent a car, hitchhiking or travel within a group. Since the site is located near the Bromo volcano, the travel to Madakaripura Fall usually combine with a trip to the valley of volcanoes in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and journey to the “Indonesian Mordor” – Ijen volcano.

From Cemoro Lawang village go to Tongas town. Go about 6 km after Sukapura. Near Sapih village you’ll see the road sign to turn to Madakaripura Falls on the left side of the road.

A waterfall located in Probolinggo Regency, East Java Province, on the main route from Surabaya to Bromo via Probolinggo Regency, East Java Province, This 200-meter-high waterfall is the highest waterfall on the island of Java and the second highest in Indonesia. This waterfall is one of the waterfalls in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area, precisely on the north side of Bromo Mountain. Madakaripura The waterfall is located at the end of a narrow valley and is in the form of an alcove surrounded by steep cliffs that drip water on all areas of the cliff like it is raining, three of which are even pouring down to form another waterfall.

Day 01: Surabaya International Airport - Hotel around Mt Bromo

• Our partner will pick You up in Surabaya, then accompany your trip to Hotel around Mt Bromo for 3 hours. After arriving in Bromo hotel, Check-in and stay all night.

Day 02: Mt Bromo Sunrise & Bromo Crater - Hotel around Ijen Crater 

• At 02.30 AM, visit the Pananjakan Bromo peak by 4 WD Mt Bromo Jeep rental  for 30 minutes, then do trekking to the viewpoint.
• At 05.20 AM, Taking pictures of Sunrise, and other landscapes will seem from this peak. Pananjakan Mt Bromo is also the best place for  Mt Bromo Milky Way Photography .
• At 06.30 AM, Comeback to your Jeep, and continue your trip to Bromo volcano crater by stopping at Sea Sand. From this jeep parking lot, start trekking or using the Pony ride.
• At 08.30 AM, After You reach the crater, enjoy your time until really satisfied, then return to your Jeep.
• At 09.30 AM, come back to Mt Bromo hotel, have breakfast, take shower and rest with free time.
• At 11.00 AM, Check out and continue your trip to the homestay or Hotel near Ijen Crater for 6 hours. Get your Hotel, Check-in and stay 1 night.
• 01.00 AM. visit the Paltuding (rest area), for 2 hours, then continue then hike to the Ijen Crater rim.
• At 05.00 AM, Arrive on the crater rim, You will see amazing views such as a green acid lake, yellowish sulfur, and local miners loading sulfur from the bottom of the Ijen crater.
• At 08.00 AM, Finish enjoying  Ijen Crater tour package , return to your hotel to have breakfast, take shower and break.
• At 11.00 AM, Check Out from Ijen Crater hotel, and drive to homestay around Tumpak Sewu Lumajang for 4 hours
• Get your homestay, Check-in and stay 1 night.
• At 07.00 – 08.00 AM, have breakfast, take shower, and continue trekking to the Tumpak Sewu location for 2 hours accompanied by special rangers of  Tumpak Sewu Waterfall
• At 08.30 – 09.00 AM, Arrive on the parking lot and walk down to point of the waterfall by crossing the river for 30 minutes.
• At 09.00 – 12.00 AM, after you are satisfied to enjoy the beauty of Tumpak Sewu falls and truly capture some photos back to the parking lot and continue to the restaurant to have lunch.
• At 12.00 – 16.00 PM, After the Tumpak Sewu trip finish, drive you up to your hotel around Surabaya City for 5 hours, including time for dinner or break. After You get to your hotel, Check in and stay on the last night.
• Wake You up for having breakfast, take shower and break. If You have more time in Surabaya, Our partner will accompany your trip to visit interesting places around Surabaya like traditional market, souvenir centre, or break in Surabaya Mall.
• Enough your time in Surabaya City, then return to Surabaya International Airport, and Finish Ijen, Waterfall,  Mount Bromo tour 5 days 4 nights .
