Outstanding trip! Captain Jenn and crew Colleen and Amanda were fabulous hosts. We did see whales, but the unexpected highlight was our time with the Spinner dolphins. I will try to post video – so many of them – hanging out with us right beside the boat.

Description

The most popular kayak tour on Kauai ... journey up the Wailua River for an adventurous paddle, hike, and swim at Secret Falls. The Secret Falls Kayak Tour is offered by Kayak Kauai ... the island's premier kayak outfitter. They have the best equipment including tandem kayaks with rudders ... they have the best guides who are trained in water safety and paddling instruction ... they will ensure that your trip through the jungle is safe, fun and memorable!

The hike to Secret Falls is a relatively modest 30 minute stroll in dry conditions and there is minimal elevation gain. Following periods of rain the trail can be muddy and VERY slippery and it becomes more challenging. Children 6 and older are welcome on this tour, but parents should know their children and how they would do in potentially muddy conditions and exercise discretion. Older adults for whom slipping and falling in a mud puddle could cause an injury should also evaluate if this is the right tour option for them.

Secret Falls is an amazing place; one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Hawaii to which you can hike. The kayaking portion of the trip just adds to the allure! This waterfall is so tall you'll find it difficult to fit the whole thing in one picture. And at the base of the falls is a wide, deep pool perfect for swimming.

Secret Falls Wailua River Rate (KK1)

$145.00 per Adult, $145.00 per Child (6-12)   (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Check In: The Kayak Kauai shop in the Wailua Marina ... across the parking lot from the entrance to Smiths Tropical Paradise and Luau.

GPS Address: 3-5971 Kuhio Highway, Building 3, Kapaa, HI 96746 Click to view map

Schedule: Monday through Friday at 7:45am, 9:00am, 11:30am, and 12:45pm

Gear Provided: Double sit-on-top kayak, paddle, life jacket, water resistant bags, walking sticks.

Included in the Tour: Lunch and beverages

Tour length: 5 hours

Restrictions: Minimum age is 6. Number of children in your party may not exceed the number of adults. Participants need to be in moderate shape for hiking on uneven terrain and comfortable paddling in deep water.

What to Bring and Wear: Bathing suit, towel, change of clothes, light shirt, hat, sunscreen, and bug repellent. extremely muddy and slippery with the off and on rain we have been having. Please inform guests of this when they are booking. Due to the conditions, please wear tennis shoes. They will get wet and muddy but they will provide the best comfort for the trail conditions. Water shoes work but in some of the deep mud patches they end up coming off your feet. They do not have water/tennis shoes for rent, and only a limited stock of water shoes for sale.

Reservations: Advanced reservations are required. When you reserve this adventure on our website your reservation will be guaranteed on your credit card. Our agency charges for this tour just a few days before the beginning of your vacation, so if you are planning ahead this event is "Reserve Now and Pay Later."

Kevin at Falls

Most kayaking in Hawaii is done in the ocean, which at times can be rough and at other times can be downright dangerous. Kauai offers the unique opportunity to kayak NEAR the ocean on some jungle waterways. This makes for a safe, tranquil outing ... and an opportunity to absorb the sights, sounds, and smells of the rain forest from a unique perspective.

Never kayaked before? No worries ... it isn't difficult at all to get the hang of it. All the instruction that you need is provided. It doesn't take a tremendous amount of effort to paddle ... you'll be surprised at how easily you move through calm waters with very gentle strokes.

While children 6 and older are OK on the Secret Falls tour, the tour operator does recommend that children under 10 should only participate if the parents are confident that their kids can do hiking in muddy conditions. The same warning applies to older adults. If you are in good health and do well outdoors, you'll likely do fine on this trail. If you are subject to injury if you were to slip and fall in the mud, this isn't the right tour for you.

Occasionally people ask us how hard it is to paddle UP the Wailua River. Actually it isn't hard at all. The river is so flat that there is seldom any noticeable current while you are paddling. The greater issue is wind ... and on a typical tradewind day that helps blow you UP the river. It is actually more difficult to paddle DOWN the river (against the wind) than it is to padde UP the river (with the wind). If you are concerned about this at all, we recommend a morning timeslot. Tradewinds typically kick up and get stronger in the afternoon.

If you're looking for more of an adventure than river kayaking, check out our Na Pali Kayak tour ! It is a 17 mile trek along the Na Pali coast, but is only recommended for experienced kayakers and is only available in summer half of the year.

Secret Falls Kauai Kayak + Hike: Complete 2024 Guide

Planning a trip to Kauai and thinking about a waterfall hike? Consider Secret Falls Kauai!

One of the most popular excursions in Kauai (on par with boat tours of the Na Pali Coast or helicopter tours over Kauai) is a guided kayak plus hiking tour to Secret Falls.

The Secret Falls kayak tour on Kauai’s Coconut Coast is a super fun half-day adventure for moderately active visitors to the island, and it’s also a relatively less expensive excursion if you are visiting Kauai on a budget.

Wailua River in Kauai, Hawaii

Secret Falls is actually one of the most-visited waterfalls in Kauai , so it’s not much of a secret. Officially Uluwehi Falls, this waterfall is located in the Wailua River Basin on the east side of Kauai.

Visiting Uluwehi Falls is one of the top things to do in Wailua River State Park .

In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know to enjoy the Secret Falls kayak tour, which includes kayaking the Wailua River and hiking through lush rainforest. The journey is as exciting as the destination!

Visiting Kauai? The only way to get a real feel for the rugged beauty of this incredible island is through a helicopter tour! Top Kauai Helicopter Tours

What to Expect on the Secret Falls Kayak + Hike in Kauai

The most common way to visit Secret Falls in Kauai is on a guided kayak + hike tour. And at the end of the hike, if conditions permit, you can even cool off with a swim under the waterfall if you choose!

Your excursion begins with a paddle up the scenic Wailua River, the largest navigable river in Kauai (and, indeed, in all of Hawaii). The river is fringed with lush rainforest on both banks, and you may see water birds as you paddle.

Kayaking the Wailua River in Kauai, Hawaii

Since the kayak tour is guided, you’ll be accompanied by an experienced guide and receive a paddling lesson at the start, helpful if you are a kayaking novice, along with information on water safety.

The paddle is about 2 miles each way, and should take you about 45 minutes each way.

Once you secure your kayak at the end of the paddle, you will follow your guide on an exciting hike through the rainforest. The vegetation is incredibly lush, with every shade of green you can imagine, and every size of leaf.

The hike is about one mile each way, with an elevation gain of about 500 feet. It’s a low moderate hike when conditions are dry.

But if it has rained recently (a more than likely occurrence in east Kauai, especially in the winter months), the trail becomes super muddy and slick in places, making it more of a moderately challenging route.

There is a river crossing involved, and one of the advantages of a guided excursion is that your guide will know when it’s safe to cross.

Secret Falls plunges about 120 feet over a cliff into a lovely deep and large plunge pool below. Framed by lush green vegetation, Secret Falls makes for a great photo subject!

Secret Falls in Kauai, Hawaii

When conditions are right (as assessed by your guide), you can cool off from your paddle and hike with a nice swim in the cool waters beneath the waterfall.

For active visitors to Kauai, the Secret Falls kayaking and hiking tour is undoubtedly a highlight. We have done it twice now and enjoyed it both times!

The kayaking was gorgeous–2 miles each way was not strenuous. The hiking was also quite flat but very muddy so wear good shoes that can get wet. Everything about the tour was fun–good conversation, beautiful views, and one of the most stunningly beautiful waterfalls I’ve ever seen. Assume about 5 hours for the trip. We will return! “

Secret Falls Trail in Kauai Hawaii

What to Bring on Your Secret Falls Kayak + Hike Tour

Proper footwear.

The trail to Secret Falls features uneven terrain. It can also be very muddy and slick after rains, and there is a river crossing involved. Please do not show up in crocs or flip-flops!

Sandals that dry quick, have good tread, and strap securely to your feet are a great choice, as are sneakers you don’t mind getting wet. Water shoes may not offer enough of a grip, especially for the river crossing.

We swear by our Teva sandals ( women’s / men’s on Amazon). We also use Keen sandals, another great option for this tour ( women’s / men’s on Amazon).

Bathing suit and towel

One of the best aspects of the Secret Falls excursion is the ability to swim in the waterfall plunge pool.

If you want the opportunity to swim under the falls, be sure to wear your swimsuit under your clothes, and bring a light absorbent towel to dry off after your swim. Check out this super absorbent yet light towel on Amazon!

Sun protection

The Secret Falls kayak and hike is an outdoor activity in exposed conditions. Sun protection is a must.

Wear a sun hat with a broad brim ( men’s / women’s on Amazon). Lather on the sunscreen (and use a reef safe brand!). Wear sunshades and a lip balm with SPF .

Bug repellent

You are going to be hiking through dense rainforest. Bring bug spray or bug wipes to minimize the chance of bites!

Change of clothing

At the end of the excursion, you’ll be grateful for a change of clothes before you get into your car. It’s very likely your clothes will be wet and mud-stained after your Secret Falls hike.

Snacks and drinking water

Unless you choose a tour that includes drinking water and snacks, be sure to bring you own, to stay fueled and hydrated.

Tips for Your Secret Falls Kauai Visit

Assess if this activity is right for you before you go.

The Secret Falls hike is easier if you have some paddling experience, although novice paddlers receive instruction at the start of the tour and most beginners get the hang of it very quickly. Plus, the river is quite placid, making it easier to paddle.

If you are traveling with younger kids (age 6-9), you’ll want to assess if they will be able to hike a couple of miles on uneven terrain in potentially muddy and slick conditions.

Older visitors will likewise want to make sure they are physically fit enough to hike in these conditions, where the potential for a fall in the mud exists. There’s also a stream crossing to maneuver.

Secret Falls Kauai Hawaii

Choose a morning tour for lower crowds on the hike…

The Secret Falls kayak and hike excursion is one of the most popular things to do in Kauai.

Unless you choose an early morning start time, expect the trail and the plunge pool at the falls to be very crowded on most days. If you start early, you will likely have a much more secluded experience at least on the way to the falls.

…And calmer conditions on the river

The wind tends to kick up in the afternoons.

While paddling up the river to the falls is easy because you will be traveling with the breeze, the return paddle will be a little more challenging.

Earlier in the day, conditions usually tend to be calm, making the paddle easier in both directions.

Use ziploc bags to protect phones and cameras

Your tour operator will likely offer a water-resistant day bag to store your belongings while you paddle and hike, but even so, unless your phone and camera (and any other expensive device) is waterproof, encase them in protective covering to keep them dry.

Choose a dry spell for this activity if your itinerary allows

When it rains (and it rains often on Kauai!), the trail to Secret Falls gets muddy and slippery. Plus, the waterfall can become a torrent and the plunge pool muddy.

If your itinerary allows, plan this excursion for a day when it has not rained recently.

Waterfall Safety

Waterfalls can be exciting, but safety is paramount. Always carefully assess conditions on the day of your visit.

  • Heed all warning signs.
  • Remember that flash flooding can occur with very little or no warning, even if it isn’t raining or stormy where you are.
  • Waterfalls, streams, and other water bodies may not be safe for swimming. The water may not be safe to drink.
  • Rocks, logs, and other debris may tumble over waterfalls into plunge pools or streams below.
  • Always stay on designated trails. Expect muddy and slippery conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions: Secret Falls Kauai Kayak +Hike

Can you visit secret falls independently.

Yes, you can rent a kayak and paddle on your own to the point where the trail begins, hike to Uluwehi Falls and back, and then paddle back to the Wailua marina on your own.

Most visitors choose a guided tour to be able to follow a local guide. While kayaking, you have to be aware of the possibility for flash flooding, windy conditions on the river, motor boats that also cruise the waterway, and debris and low-hanging vegetation that may be on the river en route.

Also make sure kayak rentals are available on the date you plan to visit. Call ahead and reserve your rental to be sure you’ll have a kayak on the day of your trip.

Also know that flash floods can make the river crossing on the hike dangerous at times. Do not venture into the water if the level is too high.

Are Wailua Falls and Secret Falls the same?

Wailua Falls is a double cascade in Wailua River State Park that you view from a roadside lookout. Secret Falls, also known an Uluwehi Falls, is also located in the Wailua River Basin, but accessed via a kayak trip on the river and a hike.

Is Secret Falls worth it?

If you enjoy swimming in waterfalls, then you will love the Secret Falls kayaking and hiking excursion. The paddle on the Wailua River is picturesque and the hike through the rainforest exhilarating. Overall, it’s one of the top experiences in Kauai for active visitors!

Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls) Guide

Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls) Guide

If you’ve been to Kauai, you know it’s heaven on Earth, and Uluwehi Falls (Secret Falls) in Kauai feels like a true paradise. We travel a lot, and Kauai is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been. It’s so lush and green, and the waterfalls are plentiful and simply spectacular.

You can see waterfalls from afar and from the road, but there is a special secret, or not so secret place that you can only get to by water and followed by a short hike. It’s the amazing Secret Falls, also known as Uluwehi Falls! My husband and I recently took our first trip to Kauai. We researched things to do for several months, which led us to Secret Falls.

This was a must-see natural attraction when visiting Kauai. This waterfall adventure requires a total of 4 miles of kayaking, with 2 miles up the Wailua River and 2 miles down river. Then followed by 2 more miles of hiking (1 mile in and 1 mile out) and a nice little break to enjoy the falls.

Where To Rent A Kayak

You can either go on a guided kayaking tour that provides you with all equipment needed or you can do this kayaking and hiking expedition on your own. There are guided tours offered by several companies, but there are also businesses that will rent you a kayak and allow you to explore Uluwehi Falls all on your own. We chose to do the trip without a guide. Nothing against these Kauai tours, but this is a very doable trip for individual travelers. Of course, you can always go with them if you prefer to be led by an expert guide that can give you some background on the area.

Kayak launch at Wailua River

There are several kayak rental companies to choose from. We rented our kayaks from Wailua Kayak & Canoe since they are located right by the Wailua River and near the boat launch. Because of this, we didn’t need to load and strap a kayak on top of the rental car, which made things more convenient.

The second reason is that they have an early morning pick-up time (as well as late afternoon) which allows you to get on the Wailua River and head to the Uluwehi Falls before any other tour group gets out there. Either way, you have your kayak for a period of 5 hours. Reservations are highly recommended, and we made ours about a month in advance. When you arrive, you are given a small cooler for snacks and a dry bag to store your belongings.

How To Get To Secret Falls

There were several couples and families heading out at the same time as us. Most kayak rental companies might give you instructions about how to reach Secret Falls if you simply ask. We were told where to go and were given additional information for those that might want to explore Fern Grotto. They have a map posted with directions as well, which you can see down below.

Secret Falls Map

I suggest taking a photo of the map because there aren’t signs telling you where to go but you can always come back to this post. We felt comfortable with the instructions but still took a photo just in case. We also recommend taking a hiking pole with you if you have one.

If you don’t have hiking poles, you can grab a walking stick when you land the kayak. Fortunately, we brought hiking poles in our car and grabbed a set to take with us. After the brief instructions, everyone sets off to explore.

Start of Secret Falls Hike

The morning we went it was overcast and a little breezy. You need to paddle upstream 2 miles and land the kayak. It’s simple to know where you have to go when on the river. The Wailua River forks, and you go to the right to go to Secret Falls. If you’re interested in checking out Fern Grotto, you can veer to the left at the fork rather than the right.

If you don’t bring any hiking poles, it’s easy to find walking sticks around the area where you land the kayak. The Secret Falls hike is mostly flat, but it can get really muddy in May and that’s when hiking poles really come in handy. Despite using the pole, I did slide and got muddy toward the beginning of the hike. Luckily I was able to rinse off.

Rock scrambles along trail

One thing you’re guaranteed about this adventure is that you will get wet! There are two main water crossings. The first one is about 18 feet high and the second one is similar, but there is a rope to hang on to as you cross.

Rocks in Secret Falls

After, you will wind through an area of tall grasses. The path is narrow and the grasses are tall and it almost feels like you’re walking through a cornfield. A portion of the hike takes you across wooden planks along the water’s edge.

Towards the end just before the falls, there is a huge fallen tree which you need to either go over or under. In addition, there is a small amount of scrambling involved just before the waterfall but nothing too difficult.

River alongside Secret Falls Hike

When we arrived at the Uluwehi Falls the first group was already there, and another group arrived at the same time as us. At this point, you can cross over to the other side and find some rocks to sit on and have snacks. A few groups came and got in the water and took photos but left pretty quickly. We ended up having this beautiful waterfall to ourselves for about 15 minutes which was really nice.

On your way back, you will probably pass groups of other people from guided tours. This made me realize we were so glad we decided to do this adventure on our own time. With a group, you are only as fast as the slowest person.

Secret Falls Kauai

What To Wear

Athletic shorts and a top/t-shirt are ideal, and a swimsuit if you plan to swim when you reach the waterfall, although caution should be taken when swimming. As far as shoes go you definitely want something that can get wet and muddy.

Hiking sandals work better than water shoes which have no traction. We wore Keen closed-toe sandals which were perfect for this trip and the rest of the hikes in Kauai .

One thing we noticed in the tour groups was that many of the guides were barefoot. I’m not saying I recommend that, but it was something we observed. So maybe it’s worth a try if you don’t have hiking sandals. It’s also worth bringing some bug bug spray since you will need it after you leave the river and start the hike. Bring a waterproof camera to get some beautiful pictures of the waterfall.

The trip to Secret Falls is a fantastic little adventure, and I recommend it to everyone. Overall, I think we spent about 3.5-4 hours and we’ll definitely hike to Secret Falls again when we return to Kauai.

Wailua Kayak Tours

  • 3 minute read

The Hawaiian island of Kauai offers an abundance of land and water adventures. Perhaps the most perfect adventure of them all is the Sacred Falls Paddle and Hike with Kayak Kauai. What makes it great?  It combines kayaking, hiking, and swimming all in some of the most picturesque tropical scenery on earth .

At first you might think that this tour is daunting. I want you to know that you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy this adventure. On our tour there were kids of all shapes and sizes with ages ranging from about 8 to somewhere in their 60’s. There was one family spanning three generations in our tour group. The kayaking is pretty gentle and the hiking doesn’t require extreme elevation changes that get you huffing and puffing.

After the logistics of checking in, the adventure launches at the south side of the Wailua River. What a beauty this river is! The river edge is surrounded by all sorts of thriving greenery from the river’s edge up to the surrounding mountain tops. I was particularly enamored with the twisted thickets of Hau trees lining the river.

After the two-ish mile (or approximately 45 minutes) kayak up the river, you put out the kayak to begin the hike into the depths of a Kauai forest. The hiking portion is approximately one-mile long and as I mentioned, it’s not particularly strenuous. Along the way, we enjoyed the seeing the native trees and hearing the sounds of the waterfall and river.

Your hiking is rewarded by arriving at a natural pool feed by a 100-foot, bridal-veil waterfall. The waterfall’s Hawaiian name is Uluwehi, but it commonly called Sacred or Secret Falls. Here, you can choose to take a swim in the refreshing waterfall-fed pool or you can park yourself on a boulder to be mesmerized by the waterfall. We opted for a little of both. Our tour included an excellent picnic lunch at the waterfall with wraps, chips, cookies and freshly sliced pineapple.

After the dip and rest stop at the falls, you hike back to the kayaks and paddle back down the Wailua.

What to Know When You Go

  • Based on our excellent experience, I can recommend Kayak Kauai’s tour. I felt like the quality of the stable kayaks, tour guide, and lunch were at a high standard in comparison to what I saw from other companies. By the way, the folks at Kayak Kauai “invented” this tour in 1988 per their website. Their guided tours are 5 hours long.
  • Wear sunscreen and a hat or visor.
  • Bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan to swim at the waterfall.
  • Kayak Kauai provided a dry bag to store our towel and camera.
  • Bring a camera that’s waterproof.
  • Wear shoes or sandals that are designed for hiking in wet areas. For example, I wore these shoes and they were perfect. I never had to take them off, even when I went swimming.
  • Do be careful with your footing over roots and rocks on the trail and the slippery boulders in the pool.
  • I asked our guide if he thought there was a better time of day to go on this tour depending on the season. He seemed to think that in the winter, the afternoon tour tends to be better and dryer. In summer months, he said the morning tour might be the best choice as it’s slightly cooler.
  • I’m “borrowing” the map shown below that indicates all the key points of this tour.

I highly recommend visiting Wailua River. It’s a huge river considering the small size of the island. The reason why the river has so much water is because one of Kauai’s mountains receives the most rain than any other place in the world.

Christian – Thanks for your comment and observation. It blows my mind to try to understand how one mountain on an island in the middle of the Pacific feeds so many rivers and waterfalls in Kauai.

oh my goodness. That looks amazing! What a fun experience with out a lot of committment!

Janet – it’s a blast. We both felt like we had gotten a little bit of a work out by the time we were done. But, as you pointed out, we got to do a lot without feeling like we needed an ambulance to take us back to our hotel. 🙂

We will have our 75 year old mom with us. She is very adventurous bus definitely slowing down. Do you think this would be too much of a strain for her? I thought if we put her on a tandem with one of us it might not be so hard on her, but still don’t want to do something too strenuous for her. Thank you for your great site!

All the kayaks that we saw were tandem. The kayaking could be a little bit strenuous when paddling up stream, so if you pair your mom with someone who has good upper body strength, it shouldn’t be a problem.

As far as the hiking goes, there’s not much elevation change. A walking stick or pole might be helpful for the hiking part.

This is a great Kauai adventure. Have fun!

Can you just hike to the falls rather than taking the kayak?

Not to my knowledge…you have to kayak up the river to get to the hiking trail.

Kayak Kauai Secret Falls: What is it?

There is an abundance of Kauai activities that must be done during your time on the Garden Island, and kayaking along the Wailua River to Secrets Falls is one of them.

The falls are no longer a secret on Kauai because they can be accessed without too much difficulty and it is a relatively well-known activity to enjoy while in Kauai. This Secret Falls tour involves kayaking up the Wailua River and hiking to a secluded waterfall.

Secret Falls’ real name is Uluwehi Falls and it is a stunning 30 metre-tall (100 ft) waterfall. It is an impressive backdrop for photographs and worth the reasonable workout required to get there.

The Secret Falls kayak and hike tour is the perfect activity for those who love outdoor adventures, nature, and stunning waterfalls.

Find out more information about the east of Kauai in this article that will help you choose where to stay in Kauai .

Read on to learn further detail about what to expect on the kayak to Secret Falls Kauai.

How to Kayak to Secret Falls?

Kayaking in Wailua River Kauai

To get to the beautiful Secret Falls in Kauai, you first need to navigate the Wailua River.

The journey begins with a scenic paddle up the river, with lush, scenic views. You can use a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) to travel along the water.

Depending on your speed, the journey by kayak will take around 45 minutes one way. If you take a SUP, you will be much slower.

Then, you will arrive at the beach where you will leave the watercraft. After kayaking the Wailua River, you will embark on a moderate hike through the jungle, crossing streams and rocky terrain, to reach the waterfall.

You will hike through varying terrain for around 25 to 30 minutes until you reach Secret Falls.

Kayaking the Wailua River: With or Without a Guide?

It is your choice whether to rent a kayak (or another vessel) from a shop and find the Secret Falls on your own or if you want to book a guided Secret Falls kayak tour.

The decision to book a guided tour or rent kayaks and explore Secret Falls Kauai on your own will depend on your personal preferences and level of comfort.

Whether you decide to book a tour or rent kayaks for a self-guided experience, you need to be prepared in terms of clothing, footwear, and knowing your abilities.

Unless you already have water equipment with you, you need to arrange this activity in advance by renting or booking a tour.

Reasons to Book a Guided Tour for Secret Falls

Booking a guided tour to hike and kayak to Secret Falls can be an excellent option for those who want to experience this adventure with a professional.

A guided tour will provide you with an experienced guide who can lead you safely through the trails and waterways, and offer insights into the local history and culture. Without a guide, you have a higher chance of getting lost or encountering unexpected obstacles.

Moreover, with a guided tour to Secret Falls, you can meet new people, which may enhance your overall experience, particularly if you are a smaller group or a solo traveller.

If you are booking a guided Secret Falls tour , you should reserve this much further in advance to get the earliest start time on your preferred day.

An early start is preferable to beat the crowds because the kayak to Secret Falls is a popular Kauai activity. I recommend a 7:00 AM start.

Many tours offer a picnic lunch in the tour, but if you only have a few days in Kauai , you may prefer to book a tour without a packed lunch included so you can arrange an alternate lunch experience after.

There are many incredible restaurants in Kauai , so I suggest you include as many of these as you can in your Kauai itinerary .

After our Wailua River kayak self-guided adventure came to an end, my family and I went to Lava Lava Beach Club for their Grab and Go lunch menu. The beach-front restaurant offers table service and an assortment of tasty lunch options, such as fish tacos, fresh salads, and burgers.

If you decide to book a guided tour, I recommend the following option below:

Reasons to Rent Kayaks for Secret Falls

Renting kayaks and doing the hike and kayak to Secret Falls Kauai on your own also has its benefits. You will have the freedom to explore at your own pace, take breaks when you want, and enjoy the activity without having to adhere to a schedule set by the guide.

Another advantage of renting kayaks is that if you and your group are faster than other groups renting kayaks from the same location, you can get to the Secret Falls first and experience the falls with fewer people.

Whereas with a tour group, you have to keep to the speed of the slowest person in your group, whom you may not know.

If you are renting kayaks on the Wailua River, make sure you call your chosen company a few days ahead to arrange your equipment.

See the next section for more information on who to rent with.

Where to Rent Equipment for a Wailua River Kayak Adventure?

Wailua River edge Kauai

Those wishing to rent kayaks and make their way along the Wailua River to Secret Falls without a guide have several options.

Some kayak rental shops on Kauai require you to transport the boats from the shop to the river edge. They will help you mount the boat on top of your vehicle to drive the short distance. Other shops are within walking distance of the boat launch zone.

🚹 You should note that Secret Falls kayak rental shops and tours are not allowed to operate on the weekends.

I rented my canoes from Wailua Kayak & Canoe . This company is located directly on the Wailua River, so no hauling is required.

I found this company to be a great option for Wailua River kayak rental.

To book with Wailua Kayak & Canoe, you can call the company directly and leave a voice message if necessary. Given that I had an international phone number, I asked the Grand Hyatt Kauai activities concierge team to arrange it.

You may find information on the internet and social media about renting canoes or kayaks from Kamokila Hawaiian Village. However, as of December 2021, Kamokila Hawaiian Village has closed and does not rent out equipment. There is a rumour that a wealthy individual has bought the village and it is set to reopen in the future.

Map for route to Secret Falls on Wailua River

If you go for the self-guided rental option, you will be shown a map of the route to get to Secret Falls. However, the kayaking route is relatively straightforward. The hike is even easier because everyone you see on the hike is going to the same place.

You can take a photo of the map to Secret Falls, but it is easy to memorise. Hug the North Bank of the Wailua River (right side on the way there). When you get to the fork in the river, you continue to follow it to the right.

There is only one route to follow for the hike to this secret waterfall, so follow the way that seems logical.

On the kayak back from Secret Falls, you need to stay on the same side (north bank) as the way there.

Stay out of the way of the Fern Grotto boat tour and other motored boats.

What to Expect on the Hike to Secret Falls?

Beach landing on Wailua River for Secret Falls Kauai

Arrive bright and early at your chosen location to start the Secret Falls Wailua River exploration. You will hear a safety briefing, instructions on using the kayak (or other equipment), and some brief expectations.

The area for loading boats to the water is small and can get busy, so make sure you are one of the first members of your group to get there. There is an outdoor public washroom near the water’s edge, so try to be organised by using this beforehand.

Once you are on the Wailua River, the fun begins. Keep paddling as per the directions until you reach the beach area where you should leave your kayak or paddleboard.

Hike to Secret Falls Kauai

Walk along the rocky edge of the water – see the image above. It may feel like you are going in the wrong direction over big rocks seemingly leading towards nothing.

Some people leave walking sticks around this area, or your tour operator may have offered you one at the rental shop. Take a stick if you are worried about the deep river crossing or have minor injuries.

Kauai kayak tours will not operate in severe weather conditions . It is not advisable to go onto the Wailua River after it has been heavily raining for a few days because of the bacteria in the water.

If you need to find other activities for your stay in Kauai, there are plenty of things to do in the Poipu area .

Secret Falls River Crossing Advice

Wailua Kayaking and Secret Falls - wading through stream

Now it is time to tackle the hardest part of this water and land excursion; the river crossing. You may find that the water comes up to your knees or hips, depending on your height. The water is cold and relatively fast flowing.

There are two techniques for tackling the river crossing. Firstly, you can shuffle your feet along the ground, feeling for and avoiding the large rocks.

The riverbed is not flat, so you need to be careful of any obstacles in the water. My family and I used this technique, and we did not have any trouble.

The second option, which I heard a tour guide advise, is to lift your feet extremely high with each step to go over the rocks.

On my return, I saw a lady in her 60s in said tour group take a frightful fall while wading through the river crossing. She was unsteady and tripped over one of the big rocks in the water. The lady was not using a stick, so we donated ours to her.

Once you have made it past this first hurdle, you will experience muddy paths, tall grasses, slippery rocks, and more stream crossings. Do not bother drying your shoes out on the walk because you will need to keep getting them wet.

There are boardwalks on much of the hike to Secret Falls. The boardwalks are narrow, and you take the same route to the falls as on the return.

Another reason why you should start the hike early is so that you do not have to wait for other people to pass on the boardwalk.

Secret Falls River crossing Kauai

Upon arrival at Secret Falls, you may want to take some pictures, go for a swim, or rest. Some people eat their lunch there, but I recommend you go for lunch afterwards at a nearby restaurant or the food trucks in Kapa’a and leave before many tour groups arrive.

Bringing a snack in your dry bag may be worthwhile.

Be careful while at Secret Falls because the rocks surrounding the pool are slippery. Also, it is advised not to swim directly underneath the falls because there is a risk of falling rocks.

Keep to a tight deadline at Secret Falls because the Kauai kayak rental companies need you to be back within a certain timeline.

Who Will Enjoy the Kayak to Secret Falls Kauai?

Steep slippery route to Secret Falls Kauai

Even though the Secret Falls kayak and hike are tough at times, you should not be afraid of it. As I mentioned before, it is a unique adventure and one of the must-do activities in Kauai.

However, there are a couple of minimum standards that you should qualify for to enjoy this experience to the fullest.

First, you should have a reasonable fitness level because the kayak and hike are relatively strenuous. You must be active for several hours in total.

Secondly, you cannot bring children under 6 years old, and under 16-year-olds need to be supervised. The rules vary across companies, so check directly with your chosen tour company.

It is not recommended for anyone with impactful injuries to take part in the Secret Falls kayak because you need to be able to get in and out of your kayak. Plus, you will need to walk across the potentially slippery and muddy ground during the Secret Falls hike.

You should consider your abilities carefully. My mum, who had knee surgery the year before, was able to participate in the kayak and hike to Secret Falls, but she is also active at home.

Finally, you should not kayak along the Wailua River if you are pregnant due to the risk of some bacteria in the river, although that is to ensure the utmost caution.

What to Wear for This Kauai Kayaking Experience?

Hiking to Secret Falls in Kauai

The footwear you choose to wear needs to be able to endure several different scenarios.

You do not need to worry about the shoes you wear during any river kayaking in Kauai. Your feet remain in the boat and get a little wet, but it is nothing compared to what will happen later.

Conversely, the footwear you choose for the hike should be able to cross a pebbly beach, muddy trails, slippery boardwalks, and be completely submerged.

If you wear hiking boots or sneakers, they will be wet for a few days after, so make sure you have another pair of shoes to wear for the next few days. I wore hiking boots and I only just managed to dry them out before my flight.

I recommend wearing Tevas or Keens, or another brand of waterproof walking sandals. This way, the shoes have a good grip for the hiking part of the excursion, and then the shoes can handle being underwater.

The benefit of these sandals for a Kauai river kayak experience is that they are semi-closed-toed sandals, which means less chance of stubbing your toe on rocks.

kauai kayak tour secret falls

Tevas are versatile shoes that can be worn in many situations, such as wading through water, dry hiking routes, or simply running errands.

kauai kayak tour secret falls

Men – I recommend wearing a moisture-wicking t-shirt, such as this one from Lululemon . The t-shirt will help keep the sun off your back and shoulders. It is unlikely that you will get your shirt wet, but it is best to have a quick-dry option. You should also wear shorts or swimming trunks .

Ladies , you should wear bikini bottoms with quick-drying shorts, such as these shorts from Lululemon .

As I mentioned, you are unlikely to get wet on your top half; so you could wear a sports bra. Unless you plan to go swimming in the pool at Secret Falls, in that case, you should wear your bikini top or a one-piece swimsuit.

Remember, the water is very cold and the rocks surrounding the pool are slippery to walk on. If you plan to go swimming, you should already be wearing your swimwear because there is nowhere to get changed at the falls.

Gadgets and Accessories

GoPro Hero 9 with handle

Some kayak rental and tour operators provide a dry bag for you to keep some of your belongings in, such as your phone, key, water bottle and sunscreen.

In addition, I would advise you to bring a waterproof camera, such as a GoPro. I own the GoPro HERO 9 and I used it to take most of the photos in this article.

Make sure you have a GoPro handle to grip onto and a wrist tie attached to the camera to make it extra secure.

Otherwise, I suggest bringing your own separate waterproof phone bag that you can wear around your neck. This way you can take your phone out for pictures if needed.

Make sure you have at least one towel in your group with you at Secret Falls, especially if you dip in the water when you arrive. It will feel nicer to dry off before putting your clothes back on.

You should also leave a towel in the car for when you return from the excursion so you can dry off into a spare change of clothes to wear at lunch (if you want).

You should also wear a baseball cap to keep the sun off your face.

Wailua Falls with rainbow Kauai

  • Fern Grotto
  • Smith’s Luau
  • East Coast beaches
  • Waterfalls: Wailua Falls and ‘Opaeka’a Falls

Other Kauai tours I recommend include:

If you have incorporated your trip to Kauai with the other Hawaiian Islands, such as Oahu and Maui, I suggest spending at least 3 days in Kauai. However, if you are dedicating all your travels to Kauai, then you should spend between 7 and 10 days in Kauai .

My husband and I are in our early 60’s and are reasonably fit and we found this to be a relatively easy workout. • jlafaille28 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Secret Falls Kayak/ Hike We love to kayak & booked this tour 3 months prior to our trip to Kauai in early March. Our guide advised us, prior to leaving, that the hiking portion to Secret Falls would not be possible as the water depth on the trail was currently waist deep due to recent rain storms. He gave the option that we could either opt out for a full refund or do a paddle only for a partial refund. We did the paddle only & had a great time! Our guide provided pointers on paddling techniques and the river current for those not familiar with kayaking as well as providing various facts about the area & early settlers, once we got started. Upon returning, he offered a list of local food favorites, which we found helpful. I’m sure the hiking portion would have been fun but was happy that safety concerns were a priority. Sam was funny, informative, patient and willing to take as much time as needed/wanted, and attentive to the conditions of the river and land and especially attentive for our safety, he was just simply fantastic!
