As exciting as travel can be, arriving in a new city can be disorienting. Figuring out where you’re going to find breakfast can feel hard enough — and from there you’ll want to learn about the city’s history and modern day way of life.

That’s why a short walking tour can be the perfect way to kick off a vacation. Not only will you learn a bit about the history of the city, but for a short time you’ll have access to a guide who knows the area inside and out — and likely speaks English. Not only is a city tour helpful, but in many cases they’re free. And in Tel Aviv, Israel , you have more than one to choose from.

In Tel Aviv there are four free weekly tours and reservations aren’t necessary — which means you can drop in at your convenience to get a taste of the city’s culture and history. All the walking tours are conducted in English, and each provides a different glimpse of life in Tel Aviv.

Bauhaus Architecture Walking Tour

Architecture buffs will love this tour of Tel Aviv’s oldest avenue: Rothschild Boulevard. Known as the “White City” for its collection of historic Bauhaus buildings, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is not to be missed.

When: Every Saturday at 11 a.m.

Walking Tour of the Restored German Templar Colony

What was once a historic colony founded by German Templars was transformed into a British military base before acting as the headquarters for both the Israeli Army and Mossa. Today, Sarona, the heart of Tel Aviv, is home to food markets, boutiques, and renowned restaurants.

When: Every Friday at 11 a.m.

Guided Tour of Tel Aviv’s Most Picturesque Neighborhood

The first neighborhood of Tel Aviv is full of the city’s artistic heritage — and picturesque homes and streets. The tour includes a free visit to the Nahum Gutman Museum of Art and a walk on Rothschild Boulevard’s Independence Trail.

When: Every Thursday at 10 a.m.

Dizengoff Center Sustainability Tour

For a look at urban sustainability — Tel Aviv style — a visit to the Dizengoff Center allows visitors to check out the center’s green rooftop, see the “tree nursery,” learn about biodynamic beehives and insect hotels, and visit a farm that’s growing vegetables using hydroponic and aquaponic methods. The earth and food-focused tour ends with a visit to one of Tel Aviv’s oldest food markets.

When: Every Thursday at 4 p.m.

There’s no need to book or reserve a spot in advance, simply show up at the designated meeting place — found here — and enjoy! Just don't forget to tip your tour guides.

Tel Aviv is a great city to explore on foot

Explore Tel Aviv’s extraordinary history and most famous landmarks by embarking on one of the many guided walking tours the city has to offer.

Tel Aviv offers stunning architectural treasures, like the 4,000 Bauhaus-style buildings in the White City, bustling markets that transform into open air parties at dusk and neighbourhoods with ever-visible links to past empires. To experience what the city has to offer, there are walking tours for every type of visitor to the city.

Sample Israeli cuisine at Carmel Market

The Carmel Market Tasting Tour takes place in the city’s largest outdoor market, referred to by the locals as ‘Shuk HaCarmel’. Taking the sites around the Kerem – Tel Aviv’s Yemenite Quarter – the tour explores Israel’s food culture through the market’s history and illustrates how different Middle Eastern cultures have influenced Israeli cuisine . Visitors are introduced to the flavours typical of the region and invited to sample local dishes and tasty bites of homemade bread, falafel in pita and stuffed baklava from the market vendors along the way.

Meeting Point: 58 Allenby Street

The food culture and flavours that are typical of the region can be sampled during a tour of Shuk HaCarmel in the Yemenite quarter

Explore Neve Tzedek, one of Tel Aviv’s oldest districts

Saunter down the cobbled streets of Neve Tzedek , Tel Aviv’s first Jewish neighbourhood outside of Jaffa . Starting on the southern tip of Rothschild Boulevard, the walk explores the neighbourhood’s principal streets and its transformation from an enclave of charming roads and European-style apartments into one of the city’s most fashionable districts. The tour includes a visit to the Nahum Gutman Museum , a historic landmark in one of the first houses built in Neve Tzedek. The museum displays artwork by Gutman, a Serbian-born painter and sculptor who emigrated to Israel at the age of seven. Many of his sculptures and colourful mosaics are scattered across public spaces in Tel Aviv, including a fountain at the south end of Rothschild Boulevard depicting 4,000 years of Tel Aviv history along with Jaffa’s inclusion in biblical tales.

Meeting Point: 11 Rothschild Boulevard

The main streets in Neve Tzedek show the neighbourhood’s transformation from an enclave of charming roads into one of the city’s most fashionable districts

Learn about the city’s Bauhaus heritage

The White City tour includes a visit to the many Bauhaus buildings lining Rothschild Boulevard and its surrounding streets. Tel Aviv, also known as the White City for its white facades, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. The 4,000 buildings, designed by the architects who settled in the British Mandate of Palestine in the 1930s after fleeing the spread of Nazism across Europe, are considered the largest group of Bauhaus-style buildings anywhere in the world. The White City tour covers the buildings’ history and traces their origins, construction and restoration and explores their current use as private apartment blocks.

Meeting Point: 46 Rothschild Boulevard (Corner of Shadal Street)

The White City walk explores the architecture and historical significance of what is considered to be the largest group of Bauhaus-style buildings anywhere in the world

Walk through Tel Aviv’s historically significant sites

The Best of Tel Aviv Free Tour covers important all must-see attractions and places of interest in the city, sites that have played a significant role in shaping the city. Stops on the tour include the Independence Hall, where Israel’s Declaration of Independence was signed; the Great Synagogue, which began construction in 1922 and was completed in 1926, and explorations of some of the most prominent works of architecture, including the cluster of skyscrapers lining Rothschild Boulevard.

Immerse yourself in Jaffa’s rich past

Discover the ancient treasures of Jaffa , a port city located south of Tel Aviv, on a two-hour walking tour. The district dates back more than 4,000 years, during which it fell under the rule of a multitude of empires, including the Romans, the Ottomans and the British. The tour includes a visit to Andromeda’s Rock where, according to Greek mythology, Andromeda was sacrificed to the sea monster, and the Jaffa Lighthouse above Jaffa Port, which was built by French engineers during Ottoman rule in 1865 in a bid to improve the port facilities. Though a free tour, tips are expected at the end of the walk.

Meeting Point: Clock Tower, Old Jaffa

The tour includes a visit to Jaffa’s most recognisable sites, such as the Jaffa Lighthouse (pictured) above the old Port

Walk along the Independence Trail

Launched in 2018 to celebrate Israel’s 70th birthday, Tel Aviv’s Independence Trail is a one-kilometre walk that includes 10 historical sites, each marking a chapter in the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Inspired by the Freedom Trail in Boston , the path starts with the creation of Tel Aviv in 1909 and ends with the Establishment of Israel in 1948. Memorable stops along the way includes the mosaic of Jaffa’s history by artist Nahum Gutman, the Great Synagogue, the statue of the city’s first mayor, Meir Dizengoff , and his former home and Independence Hall. There are maps available and a self-guided audio-visual tour is available for download on the Independence Trail app (on iOS and Android) and includes free admission to all sites along the route. Tablets are also available to rent (for a small fee) from the information centre opposite Rothschild 11. The path is lit up for guests planning a trip after sunset.

Free Tour of Tel Aviv

Book the original free walking tour of Tel Aviv’s most-visited area, Old Jaffa, with a local guide

ABOUT THE Free Tour of Tel Aviv

History meets modernity in Tel Aviv, one of the Middle East’s most exciting cities. While this might be one of the oldest inhabited places in the world, today it’s also one of the most progressive, as you’ll discover on this 2-hour free walking tour.

One of the oldest inhabited places on Earth

The Tel Aviv free walking tour meets daily by the Clock Tower in Old Jaffa, and takes you directly into the old town. Jaffa has been destroyed and rebuilt dozens of times over the past millennia, as you’ll discover as you stroll through the Zodiac Alleys, and past the iconic Jama al Bahr Sea Mosque, and as you look out to Andromeda’s Rock, where Andromeda was to be sacrificed to the sea monster in Greek mythology.

Major events of the 20th century

While Tel Aviv might have thousands of years of human history, some of the world’s most significant events took place there within in the past 100 years. See where Nazi Adolf Eichmann was imprisoned as he awaited trial, learn about the Jaffa Riots which started in the city before spreading through the country, and hear about the British Mandate and Tel Aviv’s inclusion in the proposed Jewish state.

A modern, lively city

"Jerusalem prays and Tel Aviv plays” is a quote you might come across while visiting Israel, and on the Old Jaffa walking tour, you’ll understand why. While you will see major Old Jaffa landmarks like the Jaffa Lighthouse, the Lion Temple and St Peter’s Church, your expert licensed guide will also be happy to tell you about modern life in Tel Aviv, and to give you recommendations for restaurants, bars and the best places to swim at the beach.

My greeter took me for a walk in the Carmel Market and Nahalat Binyamin – where there was a beautiful crafts market. As we walked we talked a lot what it’s like living in Tel Aviv. I had the most amazing time with her. Thank you Tel Aviv Greeter for your wonderful service!

Old Jaffa Tour

Old Jaffa Tour | A free walking tour of Tel Aviv’s most visited area

They always say that the best way to get to know a new place is to walk around the area like a local, with a local. And what if this opportunity is available at the cost of nothing? If you think this is a click-bait post, ummm, IT’S NOT . Read this post and discover Old Jaffa from our Free Walking Tour Experience!

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post and I booked the tour on my own discretion.

Tour Provider: SANDEMANs NEW EUROPE

Tour proper: old jaffa, tel aviv, israel, personal thoughts on old jaffa tour:.

A newly discovered website, SANDEMANs NEW EUROPE is a by-product of Chris Sandeman’s tour guiding experience in Berlin back in 2003. He got the idea of offering tips-based tours when his guests enjoyed his way of tour guiding. Now operating in different cities, I’m happy I came across the site and took the opportunity to join in Tel Aviv!

Old Jaffa Free Walking Tour by Sandemans New Europe

A unique way of storytelling and tour guiding, an enthusiastic woman named Hadar is our tour guide for the day. I don’t know if it’s just her or if everyone delivers the same storytelling as her, but we are so captivated and engrossed during the whole tour.

Don’t hesitate and try the Free Walking Tour! Check it out from SANDEMANs website or you can CLICK HERE!

A close landmark to our hostel ( PoliHosts Old Jaffa ), our tour started at the famous Clock Tower. Standing strong exquisitely up to this day, the Clock Tower symbolized the inception of the train from Jaffa to Jerusalem.

Jaffa Clock Tower

As we walk around, we became familiar with the landmarks with so much significance in history. My favorite is the House of the Sea, once a brothel and now turned to a sought-after wedding venue in Tel Aviv. Even the luxury hotel ‘The Setai Tel Aviv’ used to be a prison cell. Not just a regular prison, it also detained Adolf Eichmann (part of Holocaust organizer) while he waits for his trial.

The Setai Hotel in Tel Aviv

Hadar imparted us with a message in relation to these stories that our past does not define our future. Like how the House of the Sea and The Setai Hotel bears a dark reputation in the past, it is now elegantly serving the new generation with a different purpose.

Next in our itinerary comes a love story from the Greek mythology goddess Andromeda. As we hear her story of sacrifice and redemption, the ordinary looking rocks called Andromeda’s Rock has a new-found meaning to all of us.

Jaffa Port

Passing by the boats moored on their docks, we finally entered the cobble stone part of Old Jaffa. Following Hadar’s footsteps, we started going inside the maze-like stylish neighborhood of Old Jaffa.

Stair Entrance from the Port side

Artists and jewelers are now the main occupants within the neighborhood. There are jewelry shops, souvenir shops and even museums in various nooks.

Maze

But the story telling isn’t over yet. Before your artistic side takes over you, we came to know about a house who believed to be a temporary host of Peter the Apostle during his journey in Israel. It is said that this is where he had a vision to let go of his Jewish practices and preach Christianity.

Simon the Tanner's House

As the tour comes to an end in Ramesses II’s Gate Garden in Abrasha Park, a breathtaking panoramic view of Tel Aviv opened up before our eyes.

Beaches in Tel Aviv

So how much does it really cost? FREE . Absolutely.

At the end of the tour, you are welcomed to give a tip to your tour guide. Like how you give tips to your tour guides, tour drivers, etc., it’s the same concept. The tips goes straight to the tour guides and they earn a living from it. You can also decide on the amount you are willing to give. You are not obliged to tip a specific amount and as Hadar told us, ‘Don’t worry there’s no strings attached’ .

Sandemans New Europe - Tel Aviv Free Walking Tour

How much did I tip? I’m on a shoestring budget as you know it so my friends and I tipped her NIS 25.00 each. We noticed other travelers paying between NIS 20.00 – NIS 50.00 as well.

Do I really have to tip? We Asians are not pretty much familiar on the tipping concept actually so we have this question in mind. However, based on my experience, Hadar is really good you’ll end up tipping her! If you don’t feel tipping, it’s fine (I think) but trust me you will! 😉

A city who witnessed the Ottomans, Crusaders, Romans, Canaanites and Egyptians, the Old Jaffa Tour made us all traveled back in time. We learned so much history in a short amount of time from Hadar’s romantic storytelling. Her stories are captivating enough for me to remember the history better than how I learn from history books.

With that said, considering the price (it’s free) including the tip, the Old Jaffa Tour is worth the walk! Seeing the city from a foreign perspective with a local’s lens, it’s a budget-friendly tour without compromising the quality of the tour.

Jaffa, Israel

If you’re still hesitating if this tour is for you, this is the sign. Unless you’re in a wheelchair (Old Jaffa isn’t wheelchair friendly because of some stairs), I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t try this. That’s all from me and until next post, see you!

Join us to a guided tour in a town and a harbour that are thousands of years old, that are mentioned both in the old and New Testament, where St. Peter, prophet Jonah and Napoleon Bonaparte spent days and nights.  We will start at the clock tower square, go up to the viewpoint on the top of Hapisga garden, stroll through the narrow allies of the old city down to the harbour and finish in the flea market, one of the trendiest places in contemporary Yaffo.

  • Clock tower square
  • Yaffo’s harbour – thousand years old natural harbour that made it the gate to Jerusalem for pilgrims
  • Old city allies – 19 th century Kurkar stone built narrow allies.
  • St. Peter’s church – a place commemorates St. Peter’s historical visit to Yaffo.
  • Viewpoint from the top of Hapisga garden
  • Flea market – one of Tel-Aviv – Yaffo’s favourite hang-out places full of colorful stalls and trendy restaurants.

Excellent tour of the Old City!

I highly recommend visiting Jerusalem with Tzachi Samiya. He was clearly an expert not just in the history but also in today’s goings ons, showing and teaching us about the big hits but also several hidden gems. He was extremely generous with his time and happy to adapt the tour based on our interests.

Insightful Old city and Christian tour of Jerusalem with Seth

Seth has great knowledge and thoughtfully prepared visuals to aid our understanding of the history. He also gave us understanding of the modern day life in the old city. He is both passionate and knowledgeable about history. I found him very amicable and patient with all the questions.

Old City and Christian Jerusalem

A very thorough introduction from the kind David. I did the Old City Tour and it was so nice I decided for the Christian walk too. Thanks

Aviel is the best

Aviel gave us the most sincere and detailed introduction to Christian sites in Jerusalem we could have hoped for. It all just clicked. Plus he was just the nicest chap to chat with. Thanks!

Amazing tour of old Jerusalem

We had a pleasure to have a walking tour of the Old Jerusalem with Tzachi Samiya. It wlas an amazing tour. We had a big grouo with us and everyone had enjoyed it. Tzachi had no proboem keeping everyone’s attention. His stories were captivating. He covered all aspects of the city: history, religion, and division . We went through Armenian, Christian, Jewishand Arab sections of the Old City. The tour actually ended up being a lot longer than 2.5hrs. We had a big group of people of different ages and we all learned a lot and enjoyed it

This tour is also available as a Private Tour.
