This app has been a God send

I had recently lost my car and been having to use the bus to get to work. This makes thing significantly easier. Helped me from going into a panic over not having a vehicle to realizing I would be able to easily manage not having a car. I still don’t have a car and am really enjoying my morning and evening commutes. God bless you all and Thank you for putting the effort into this app. I am one person who feel they have been helped with this.

Good most of the time.

Early mornings are the worst to figure out. App is pretty good most of the time but sometimes is misleading. For example I put in my destination and preferred arrival time and it gives me a resulting bus that arrives after the eta of my destination drop off. How can I arrive to work at 6:05am but only after the bus shows up at 6:45am? Or I when I plan my trip the night before through the MYJTA app it tells me a bus will be at the closest stop at Xam, about 4am, and I arrive early to look it up again and that bus doesn’t show up for another hour. It also doesn’t save the route I need to take when I plan ahead. I have to consistently check to make sure where I am to go and when and where the bus will be. Its been a good month now and I thought by now I’d have my route down. Granted I have a shifting schedule day to day. I feel the app sometimes, 1/4 of the time, it hinders me a lot so like today I grabbed a bunch of bus route pamphlets and have to sort it out and cross verify everything. Yes, I also downloaded the next bus app aswell. Still don’t feel confident the night before that I’ll make it to work on time and I get up 4hrs ahead of when I need to arrive for work….

Functional, not intuitive

I have multiple phones. One sim card. That means, same number across all phones when I put said sim in. However your security protocol only allows for the use of one device. Meaning even if I had a family of devices that can support the app(tablet, phone)only the home device can be used. This is extremely frustrating and inconvenient. Not to mention that the bus system is one of the worst for a big city when compare to either LA or NY. I get it, per capita Jacksonville is bigger, but how my other two cities have double your population and more efficient transportation systems. More than 90 percent of the time your buses are late and about 15 percent of the time. They come early. My goodness. In the end, thank you for allowing me to get to my destinations. I just wish that I can get there when I set to, and not be at the mercy of a system that is borderline incompetent. Thank you.

Public Transportation: Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA)

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) services the Northeast Florida region and has various routes throughout the city. Line #19 – Arlington has the closest stops for students to hop on and transfer to other lines, depending on their destination.    JTA offers a College Student Annual Pass Program wherein local students attending an accredited college or university can ride any JTA fixed route bus or First Coast Flyer route free of charge once your enrollment is confirmed. You must use an email address associated with a local accredited college or university.    We recommend you plan your trip ahead using the JTA Plan Your Trip tool if using their services. Students can review their Fares/Passes here .

Greyhound Bus & Amtrak Train

When visiting other countries in the U.S., students have the option of traveling by plane, train, or bus. The Greyhound Bus is currently the main bus line in America, and often services smaller towns which are not accessible by train.    In comparison, trains are usually faster, more comfortable, and about the same price as buses. However, the passenger train system is limited in the U.S., and depending on the destination may require usage of bus and train. Amtrak is aware of this complication, and when planning a trip to a destination in which you must take the bus for a limited distance Amtrak will schedule and include this in your reservation.    For more information about times and routes visit their websites linked above.

Buying a Car

As an international student you will have the ability to purchase a car from a car dealership or a private individual who has advertised a car for sale. In any case you should have with you a U.S. American acquaintance that is both knowledgeable about cars and skeptical by nature. Such person could help you evaluate both the condition of the car and the claims made by the person who is trying to sell it.  These evaluations are essential because buying a car, especially a used one, can be very difficult to understand. When you buy a car, the “Certificate of Ownership” or “Certificate of Title” must be transferred from previous owner to the current car buyer.

All cars in the State of Florida must be registered. If you buy a car, you must register it and obtain a license plate for the car. Information about this process is available on the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website .

The law requires automobile insurance. Check with the Division of Motor Vehicles regarding minimum insurance requirements and contact automobile insurance agency regarding differences in insurance costs and coverage in order to make the most informed decision.

You can choose from a variety of insurance companies, some of which have agents in the Jacksonville area. We recommend students ask a friend or visit an online search engine for auto insurance companies that provide service to drivers in the NE Florida region.

  • The cost for the insurance is called the “premium”. The amount that you must pay yourself if you get into an accident is called the “deductible." If you want insurance coverage for damage to your car, you will need to purchase "collision" coverage as well.
  • If you have a bad driving record or are a new driver, your premium will be higher.

JU Parking Permit

Students who choose to purchase a vehicle must register it with Campus Safety & Security and pick up a permit tag for their vehicle. The permit is free and required.    To register your vehicle:

  • Log in to your MyJU Portal.
  • Go to the "Student" tab and expand the "Campus Safety" drop down.
  • Click on "Online Vehicle Registration" and complete the form.

WEATHER ALERT

A river flood warning in effect for Columbia County

Jta expects to have more than a dozen autonomous vehicles rolling through downtown in 2025.

Aaron Farrar , News4Jax reporter

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Transportation Authority is showing off the self-driving vehicles it plans to roll out downtown next year.

It’s part of “Autonomous Vehicle Day.”

JTA hopes to have more than a dozen autonomous vehicles rolling through downtown in 2025.

They will be along several parts of Bay Street.

Florida Times-Union: Cost rises to $65 million for kick-off phase of ‘driverless’ shuttles in Jacksonville

It will be a 3-mile loop called the Bay Street Innovation Corridor, between the downtown core and the sports and entertainment district.

The corridor is expected to have 12 different stops.

JTA said it is a part of a plan to modernize that part of the city.

The agency also just broke ground earlier this week on a $65 million Autonomous Innovation Center in Lavilla.

Start your morning with our daily forecast, trending news and stories curated by The Morning Show team.

JTA held its annual “State of the Authority” on Thursday and CEO Nat Ford spoke about his vision.

“Next year, Jacksonville will become the first city in the United States to deploy a true autonomous vehicle network for public transportation,” he said. “This is not a pilot program, folks. It will be a true public transportation service unlike anything ever developed. This project will be a tangible application for Jacksonville, and it creates a blueprint for cities in Florida as well as across the United States. The state of Florida created a climate for innovation through its laws and policies. Federal policy makers recognized that states are the incubators for innovation as well as the laboratories for change. They all embrace this vision. We are so thankful for that collaboration.”

City Council president Ron Salem said the improvement of infrastructure is contributing to the enhancement of quality of life in Jacksonville.

“JTA’s innovative approach to integrating autonomous vehicles into our transportation network is paving the way for the future,” Salem said. “The Ultimate Urban Circulator (U2C) program highlights, our city’s commitment to embracing cutting edge technology to improve mobility and reduce congestion.”

Back in February, News4JAX showed viewers when JTA debuted its first autonomous shuttle at FSCJ’s downtown campus. At the time, the vehicle had an operator since it was a pilot run.

MORE: ‘It’s the future, and it’s here’: JTA debuts first autonomous vehicle on FSCJ’s downtown campus

But the plan is for it to be self-driven.

Some of the features include high-definition cameras, radar, and a system to identify what is happening around the vehicle.

Those will be similar to the shuttles that are on the way to Bay Street.

Whenever those autonomous shuttles end up coming to Bay Street, they will not be able to operate in the rain or the fog because those conditions affect the sensory technology.
