Betty Lou Cruises

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Went for a Betty Lou Dinner Cruise. Was our first time and weather was perfect. Was nice when Captain pointed out landmarks. Ride was nice but food not so much. Don’t expect much for food. Don’t go there hungry, as portions are very small. Rolls... very dry, they said having sirloin steak but was tiny 1 ounce slice, Get to food early otherwise might not get anything. Same goes for desert. Cabin was very hot and the people sitting in cabin had people standing over them waiting to get food. If go sit on top deck but come dusk watch out for the bugs. They should have different lights or turned them off/dim them. Also, could announce when food/ desert being served or let tables go one by one. It was something to do but won’t be going again. More

First the positive: Food was good Service on the boat was very good Negative: Boat had 50 people on board...too many for the boat as sitting on top of the engine was not pleasant (noise and smell) plus people sitting there had to try to... eat holding their plate in their hands. There was no sound on the lower level so it became just a boat ride not knowing what sites you were passing. Thought this was to be a major draw for the cruise. Because people had to sit in the engine area it was very congested for the food lines and awkward. Would highly recommend sound system be available for both levels so everyone could enjoy the places being pointed out. Also the boat needs to be cleaned between cruises. There was trash on the floor. More

Great lake views. Mendota a better trip than Monona. Pricey drinks.

I attended the Fiesta cruise this week, unlimited margaritas and a taco bar, the tour was very disappointing. Our group spent most of the time in line waiting for a drink or food instead of enjoying the sunset and the cruise. I would not recommend... spending the money on the dinner cruise. The layout of how food was served was very dysfunctional. Very disappointed. More

We celebrated my sister's 75th Birthday with the Sunday Brunch cruise. It was a terribly windy day and the white caps were rolling on Mendota but Captain Rob did an outstanding job at the helm and we felt safe (although it was a little hard... to walk around the boat!) The 3 young crew members were clean cut and very polite! They literally ran up and down getting anything we needed b/c of the rocking of the boat. They even SANG happy birthday (albeit not really well) to my sister! :) They helped our 91 yr old mother on and off the boat and treated us like royalty. The mimosas were good! The crew and passengers clearly had a good time despite rough seas! The brunch was outstanding. Prime rib was perfect! Large selection of appetizers and entrees. Can't wait to go again! More

We celebrated our last day in Madison with the Champagne brunch tour. food and drinks way beyond expectations and we had a blast. Our group was 11 women in our 50s and 60s, but all age groups were on board.

I invited 7 family members to join me on the Monona Betty Lou Cruise for fiesta night. The cost was $352 for 8 people. The weather was calm and warm so we were really looking forward to an enjoyable time. My sister in law is... Mexican American and I thought the Fiesta Menu would be perfect. We were very disappointed. The appetizers consisted of opening a bag of tostitos, a jar of salsa and the awful Velveeta's Salsa Con Queso. The amazing thing is that they ran out of the jarred salsa which was the only thing that made the chips edible! How hard it to have several jars on board just in case? The main meal wasn't served until well in to the cruise. We were the first to be served. The flour and corn tortillas were piled on a paper plate in big stacks that were so stuck together that we needed to pick up the whole pile and work it to peel them apart. So much for sanitation. Also, they were only mildly warm. The "hot" food was under warming hoods, however the chicken and beef, along with the rice and beans were just barely warm. The meat juices, which should have been sort of runny, were still dried on the meat. And again, it all would have been more palatable with a large dose of salsa, but none was offered. Dessert was two tiny "cinnamon crisps" with a little dab of aerosol whipped cream. If it wasn't so pathetic it would have been comical. As for the drinks, the margaritas were watered down so after one I switched to wine, hoping that it too hadn't been thinned. The "tour" part of the cruise was also a disappointment. I asked the tour guide to please speak louder as two in our party wore hearing aids. To no avail. Even those of us who could hear, weren't able to make out what he was saying. The boat driver made a tight circle in the middle of the lake, taking us so far from the shore that we weren't able to see what the guide was pointing out anyway. This is not my first Betty Lou Cruise but it will be my last. I've taken two cruises on Lake Mendota, both in 2013. On those occasions, the food was great and the tour guides were very informative. That's why I was so disappointed and mildly embarrassed since it was my idea. I'm lucky that my family is not the complaining kind and they won't hold it against me. But I've certainly learned my lesson. No more Betty Lou Cruises for me and I won't be encouraging anyone else to go either. More

Several weeks ago we booked a party of six for the Sunday afternoon ice cream cruise on July 8, a gorgeous summer day. We had company from out of town and thought they would enjoy the views of the area from the boat. On Friday... we received a phone call saying the cruise was canceled because they didn’t have enough people booked. Website doesn’t say what the minimum is, but since we had six it’s unlikely the minimum wasn’t met. The cruise website says they take reservations up to 24 hours in advance of cruise ( but we were canceled 48 hours in advance!) Most reviews (and the Betty Lou website) say they fill up quickly and are usually crowded. Did they get an option to make more money with the boat that Sunday, maybe a private party? Whatever the reason the cruise was canceled, this is a terrible way to treat booked customers, who were required to pay in advance. After reading the many other bad reviews it’s clear Betty Lou does not care about the convenience and enjoyment of their customers. We’ll find a reliable option next time we want to show off Madison to visitors. More

New to the area and made a reservation for myself and 5 guests for a Sunday Brunch. When we got there we found out the boat was broken and we would be transferring to one half it's size and were asked to wait. The service... was great but the food adequate at best. No one liked the shrimp and the 2 egg dishes were a flop. (Not sure if that was due to having to transfer food.) Stair well was extremely small and wobbly for carrying plates up and down. Restroom smaller than a mop closet. Sent an email to their company and found their customer service person who responded to be lacking skills for that position. Pretty sure they won't see me or friends or friends of friends on another one of their boats. More

We went on an evening "dessert" cruise last night. First, the boat on Mendota was broken, and we had to move the party to Menona. I was impressed that they were able to accomodate our group, as this was a reservation made 5 months prior.... The night of the crusie, the captain begins with a speech about how the live band showed up drunk, was vomiting, and proceeded to tell us how she makes so much less money compared to the band, and yada, yada, yada. Not only was she terribly unprofessional, she dumped her problems on our group, who was there to enjoy the nightline and lake. Next, she proceeded to tell us in great detail, as to why there was only one working toilet instead of 2 on the boat - with 40 people on board. After we began boarding, the generator failed on the boat, so we had no lights other than flashlights and the drink lamp on the boat. We had people in the 50-60 age range, and this was a huge issue as they moved on the boat. The "desserts" were terrible. They were all purchased at Sam's club - cheesecake bites, dry lemon bars, dried out cookies and a cheesecake with no forks to eat it with. The beer was warm, diesel smoke was coming back in from the window in back - where the food was located - it was a mess. It was completely NOT WORTH the money we paid. I would never recommend this experience or food to anyone. It was a waste of money, and the cruise experience did not make up for it. More

Our company recently held a group outing on one of the Betty Lou cruises. The overall experience was nothing special. The woman, who runs the reservations, Star, is by far the rudest, inconsiderate and terribly unprofessional person I've ever dealt with! What ever happened to... customer service?! I WOULD NOT recommend booking anything with them again. Ever. More

Great time with family, the captain and staff were helpful and friendly. Captain would point out places of interest. For and beverageswere non stop. Daughter got a lesson in boating made her day.

betty lou cruise menu

If you enjoy riding a shabby, crowded, dirty, 30-year-old boat around in circles on a big windy lake, Betty Lou Cruises may be for you. It'll help if you drink a lot so you're less likely to notice the French fries and Chex mix on... the floors, left from a prior group and not cleaned up. The "beer and pizza" cruise featured pizzas delivered by Ian's Pizza about 20 minutes before the boat left, so they were stone cold by the time they were served. Boat driver and servers were friendly and competent, but that's about the only good thing I can say about the experience. It was a waste of two hours and $42.00. More

My two sons and I came back to Madison about two years after my husband died, and I took my kids (13 and 6) on this cruise. It was overbooked, people were rude and everyone tried to get good seats while my kids couldn't even... sit next me! Older people - 60's and 70's - were so absolutely rude! It was a terrible experience. My husband and I were originally from Madison, and my husband is buried there, so this made a hard time even worse. They are awful! More

Small boat, was overcrowded. Very hot on board- had been raining, so all windows closed and roof closed upstairs. Very uncomfortable inside. Due to windows, no view.
