The distance from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Seattle’s cruise terminals varies:

• Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66: about 15 miles, a 30-minute drive.

How to Get to Seattle Cruise Port?

Seattle’s cruise ports, nestled in the heart of downtown, offer various transportation options for ease and convenience.

• Airport to Port Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is about a 30 to 40-minute ride by taxi, Uber, or shuttle to the cruise ports or downtown hotels.
• By Train For travelers from the Pacific Coast, Amtrak’s Coast Starlight Train from California, Washington, and Oregon arrives at King Street Station downtown. A taxi or Uber will get you to the cruise terminal.
• Taxi or Rideshare A quick taxi or rideshare from the airport or hotel to the cruise terminal is recommended for those, not within walking distance of the terminal. It’s best to get on the taxi line at the airport or have a hotel porter hail a taxi for you. You can also book an Uber or Lyft.
• Hotel Shuttle Service Some hotels offer shuttle services directly to the cruise terminal. Inquire with the front desk.
• Shuttle Service from the Airport Book shuttle services from the airport to your hotel or the cruise terminal.

Downtown Seattle boasts over 14,000 hotel rooms , yet booking your pre-cruise or post-cruise stay early is wise. While the hotels nearest the port fill up quickly, staying even 10-15 minutes away is no hassle due to Seattle’s walkable nature.

During our stay, we chose the Grand Hyatt Seattle, which is conveniently located within walking distance of key attractions. This proves that you don’t need to be adjacent to the cruise port to enjoy downtown.

There are accommodations near Pier 66 for those eager to stroll to the terminal on cruise morning. However, this convenience doesn’t extend to departures from Pier 91.

Upon disembarking at Seattle cruise port with an early flight, we opted for the “walk-off” option, carrying our luggage to exit the ship quickly. Once outside, we hailed an Uber.

For those with later flights, Seattle’s Port Valet service is an invaluable option we would have considered. This complimentary service offered by the Port of Seattle is perfect for flights departing after noon on disembarkation day, providing a seamless transition from ship to airport.

• Service: Allows passengers to check luggage on the cruise ship for direct transport to their airline.
• Luggage is checked through to your final destination.
• Boarding passes are provided before leaving the ship, enabling direct access to airport security and your gate.

Visit the Space Needle

The Space Needle, an iconic symbol of Seattle since the 1962 World’s Fair, offers breathtaking views from its observation deck. Initially hesitant due to its touristy reputation, we found the experience delightful and are happy we didn’t miss out on visiting.

Tip: Buy tickets to enter shortly before sunset. You can check online what time the sun will set the day you want to visit. Buy the tickets to enter no less than 45 minutes before. Once you enter, you can stay as long as you like. This way you can see the city when the sun is out, at sunset, and then at night.

Make Time to Explore Pike Place Market

Established in 1907, Pike Place Market is not just a bustling marketplace but a historic Seattle landmark, embodying the city’s culture. It’s an essential visit for anyone in Seattle.

Here, you’ll encounter the lively fish-throwing at Pike Place Fish Market, the original Starbucks for a coffee fix, and the colorful yet slightly gross Gum Wall. The market is also home to a vibrant flower market—perfect for picking up a fresh bouquet for your cabin—and offers an array of fresh seafood and delicious food stalls. Exploring the market could take hours, as it’s packed with more experiences than one can cover in a short visit. It’s busiest in the afternoon, so an early morning visit is recommended to avoid the crowds.

We opted for a late hotel checkout on embarkation day to squeeze in some time at Pike Place Market. Although our visit was brief, it was undoubtedly worth it.

Take a Ride on the Seattle Great Wheel

The Seattle Great Wheel, a prominent Ferris wheel at Pier 57, was built in 2012 and reached 175 feet, marking it as a standout feature on the West Coast skyline. At night, its 500,000 LED lights make it a sight to behold.

Complete Guide to Cruising From the Port of Seattle

When it comes to departure ports, it’s tough to beat a destination like Seattle. As a world-class city tucked into one of the most beautiful regions on the planet, there’s a ton to see and do in the area. And that’s before you even set foot on a cruise ship.

If you’re sailing from Seattle, then you are almost assuredly headed to Alaska. The port serves as a jumping off point for Alaskan cruises, most of them lasting a week. Over the past decade or so Alaskan cruises have boomed in popularity, and with that so has traffic at the Port of Seattle.

Today the two terminals (with a third on the way) serve more than 1.2 million passengers in a typical year — most of that during the busy summer Alaskan cruise season.

Unlike ports in Florida that might attract a lot of locals, most passengers sailing from Seattle are from out of town and unfamiliar with the port and what it offers. For those, we’ve created this complete guide to cruising from the Port of Seattle.

Port of Seattle Location

As mentioned above, Seattle has two different terminals. Unlike other cruise ports, the terminals aren’t located at one single spot. Instead, they are separated by a few miles.

That said, both terminals are located near downtown in the heart of Seattle. Pier 66 (Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal) is within walking distance of downtown and the famous Pike Place Market. Pier 91 (Smith Cove Terminal) is just about three miles up the waterfront.

Both terminals are about 15 miles from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The ride will take about 20-30 minutes to get to the ship from the airport.

Many people come into Seattle before their cruise to explore the area for a day or two. There’s a chance you might be coming from somewhere other than the airport. In that case, here are the distances from a number of areas around town:

• Sea-Tac Airport: 15 miles | 20-30 minutes
• Tacoma: 35 miles | 45-60 minutes
• Olympia: 60 miles | 1 hour 15 minutes
• West Seattle: 6 miles | 15 minutes
• Capitol Hill: 3 miles | 10 minutes
• Bellevue: 11 miles | 20-25 minutes
• Kent: 22 miles | 35 minutes

Things to Do Near the Port

One of the big benefits of cruising from Seattle is that there is a ton to do right nearby. Within minutes you have a number of world-class attractions. For that reason, we suggest thinking of Seattle as your first port of call and spend at least a day exploring, instead of just arriving and getting on the ship.

Space Needle Complex Of course, the most famous landmark in Seattle is the Space Needle. It’s only a short distance from the cruise ports. In addition to seeing the building, there’s also lots more to do at the complex, including the Pacific Science Center, Seattle Children’s Museum, and the Museum of Pop Culture.

Pike Place Market Pike Place Market is a tourist hotspot. The open-air market features all sorts of specialty shopping and it one of the most visited spots in the city. It’s a short 10-minute walk from Pier 66, but you’ll need a ride from Pier 91. There are also a number of hotels nearby if you want to stay in downtown Seattle.

Seattle Waterfront The waterfront right near Pier 66 and downtown Seattle is walkable with a large number of things to do. There is the Seattle Aquarium, Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, the Great Wheel and more. It’s all a short walk from Pier 66 and an easy way to spend a day. That’s not even mentioning the great views of the water afforded from these spots.

Cruise Terminals

As mentioned, the Port of Seattle has two cruise terminals, Pier 66 and Pier 91.

Pier 66 Officially known as the Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal at Pier 66, this cruise terminal is the “downtown” terminal. It’s located within walking distance of a number of hotels and attractions. It serves primarily Norwegian and Oceania cruise ships. Parking is onsite, with about 1,700 spaces. Pier 91 While Pier 66 is the most “visible” cruise pier due to its location, more people sail from Pier 91. That’s because it’s served by a much greater number of cruise lines, including Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, and Princess. The location is north of downtown, but a short distance away. There is also parking right nearby if you are driving in for a cruise.

Hotels Near the Seattle Port

If you’re flying in for your cruise, it’s always a good idea to plan to arrive a day early. This way if anything goes awry with your flights — equipment delays, weather, computer issues, etc. — then you still have plenty of time to get to the port on cruise day.

But when flying into Seattle, we’d suggest everyone arrive an extra day or two, simply because there is a lot to see and do in the area, which is one of the most beautiful regions in the United States.

Because Seattle sees a large number of tourists and because the cruise ports are located near downtown, there are a number of hotels in the area. One thing to note is that downtown hotels can be more expensive than staying outside of the city center. If you are trying to save a few bucks, you can stay near the airport, which often has cheaper rates.

Getting to the Port of Seattle (Transportation)

In a city the size of Seattle, you have a number of options for getting around. Meanwhile, as the cruise industry grows, so too do the services available catering to getting cruise passengers back and forth from the port.

Driving to the Port If you’re lucky enough to live in the area, you can simply drive to the cruise port. And while traffic in the area can be trying, it’s hard to beat the convenience of driving in for your cruise. No matter which terminal you sail from there is parking available at the port. And while it is a bit pricey, it’s also extremely convenient. You can arrive on your own schedule and also leave right when you get off the ship the day your cruise returns. Uber/Lyft Over the past five years or so, Uber and Lyft have transformed how people get around. The rideshare companies operate throughout the area and can get you to the cruise ports from anywhere you are. Rides will run about $50-70 and take about half an hour from the airport to the ships. Of course, not everyone is coming from the airport. That’s why we’ve estimated rates from various spots in the area below. (Note: Rates will vary based on supply/demand.)

• Sea-Tac Airport: $50-70
• Tacoma: $110-130
• Downtown: $15-25
• West Seattle: $30-40
• Capitol Hill: $15-30
• Bellevue $40-50

Taxis Of course, if rideshare isn’t for you then you can always take a taxi. Cabs are available around town and at the airport. Seattle offers both flat rate and metered cabs. Expect the general prices to be a bit higher than a comparable ride with Uber/Lyft. Still, for those that don’t have an account with a rideshare company, getting a cab can be more convenient than having to download an app and start an account when you want a ride.

Hotels with Cruise Shuttles One of the nice things about having a booming cruise industry in the city is that hotels pull out the stops to cater to cruise passengers. As is the case in other ports, a number of hotels offer shuttle rides to the port as a perk for your stay. Parking at the Port

Driving to the port? If so, then you’ve got to find somewhere to park your car during your trip. The good news is that there are convenient parking options right near the port. The bad news is that they can be expensive. Below we have your main options for parking at the Port of Seattle. For full details, see our Seattle cruise parking page here .

Official Port Parking Like all cruise ports, the Port of Seattle offers parking right at the terminal. Both Pier 66 and Pier 91 have parking lots available to passengers with more than a thousand spaces each. Passengers can park in the Bell Street Pier Garage, which is across the street from Pier 66, or there is a parking lot right across from Pier 91 just a little farther north.

The parking at the Bell Street Garage is $30 per day. Parking at Pier 91 is $29 per day. There is also RV and oversized vehicle parking available at Pier 91. While you don’t have to reserve ahead of time, reservations are available so that you can have one less thing to worry about on cruise day.

Independent Lots While many cruise ports have a number of independent lots that offer dramatically cheaper rates than parking at the port, Seattle is a bit different. Given the location, parking is at a premium so there aren’t a lot of spots. One lot that we do know of is Seattle CruisePark. It’s located near Pier 91, but offers a shuttle to both terminals. Specifically, there are a number of hotels both downtown and near the airport that will let you park your car there while you cruise. For most hotels the parking is included in a package. What Time Should I Book My Flight Home? When you arrive back in Seattle after your cruise, you can expect to get back early in the morning. Most ships dock about 6-7 a.m. and then it can take 2-3 hours for everyone to get off the ship. Those choosing “self debarkation” will get off the ship first. These are people who elect to carry all of their bags with them and don’t need assistance getting off the ship.

After going through customs and immigration, it’s another 20-30 minute ride to the airport after getting to your transportation. For that reason, we’d suggest never booking a flight before noon. Yes, its possible to breeze through and get to the airport earlier, but that can also cause a lot of stress.

What About Seattle’s Port Valet Service? You might have heard about the Port Valet service from the Port of Seattle. This service is great for those headed to the airport, but who don’t want to deal with lugging bags around. You simply put a tag on your bags the night before your cruise ends and set them outside your room.  

The staff then picks them up and they are sent to the airport and loaded on the plane. That way you can explore the city for the day or simply head to the airport without worrying about your luggage.

In addition, the ship’s crew can also provide your boarding passes for your flight. So when you arrive at the airport, you can just head directly to the gate. You’re already checked-in and your luggage is taken care of.

How Do I Know Which Pier I Sail From? The Port of Seattle has two piers — Pier 66 and Pier 91. They are located about three miles from each other. So which do you head to on sail day? First, your cruise line will let you know where to arrive, but the rule of thumb is that if you are sailing on Norwegian or Oceania, then you’ll head to Pier 66.

If you’re sailing anyone else like Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Celebrity, Carnival, and others, then head to Pier 91.

Once you’ve docked at Pier 91 in Smith Cove Cruise Terminal—an old naval base about 2 miles north of downtown Seattle—you’ll be a short walk from several local boutiques in what’s known as the Magnolia neighborhood.

What are the local tipping customs?

Tipping is not mandatory, but it is customary in Seattle, just as it is throughout the U.S. Tips are not only greatly appreciated, but they are quite often a crucial part of the wages in the tourism industry.

Here are some handy tipping customs to keep in mind:

Restaurants: 15% for standard service and 20% or higher for excellent service.

Seattle cruise port: A guide to cruising from Washington state

If you're embarking on a round-trip Alaska cruise, you will likely be departing from the Port of Seattle. In 2023, seven cruise lines based ships in Seattle, Washington, with 291 departures. Although most ships were headed to Alaska, cruises from Seattle also sailed to destinations like Asia, Hawaii and the Panama Canal .

Seattle is home to two cruise terminals. Both are easy to reach from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) or Seattle Paine Field International Airport (PAE). Once you arrive, dozens of points hotels are available to welcome you for a pre- or post-cruise stay.

If you're cruising in and out of Seattle, here's what you need to know.

Cruise port of Seattle overview

The Seattle port has two cruise terminals, located nearly 3 miles apart. Each terminal has two berths.

Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66

Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91

Wheelchairs are available to assist passengers in getting on and off the ships at both terminals.

Complimentary valet service is available for your luggage through the Port of Seattle for passengers scheduled to depart from SEA on the last day of their cruise. Simply attach the provided tags and leave your luggage outside your cabin on the final evening, and your bags will be collected and delivered directly to the airport.

Participating cruise lines include Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean. Participating airlines include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Horizon Air, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. Enroll online or via the paperwork in your cruise ship cabin to take advantage of this service.

Same-day luggage storage is available at both terminals for $5 a bag. Late fees apply to luggage retrieved after 3 p.m.

Airports near the cruise port of Seattle

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is located 14 miles from the Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66 (a 30-minute drive, traffic-depending) and 17.4 miles from the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91 (a 35-minute drive).

SEA is the largest airport in the Seattle metro area and is served by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines.

Seattle Paine Field International Airport (PAE) in Everett is 24 miles from the Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66 (40 minutes, depending on traffic) and 25 miles from the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91 (42 minutes).

The airport has only two gates, and Alaska Airlines is the only operator. Most of the cities served are clustered in the west. You'll find flights to and from destinations such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Honolulu.

If you're flying with a plus one, you might be able to save on airfare with a companion pass. Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card holders receive a companion fare certificate on their card's anniversary, entitling them to a companion ticket on Alaska Airlines for just $99, plus taxes and fees from $23 (as long as they spend a minimum of $6,000 annually on the card).

For those flying into SEA, the Southwest Companion Pass entitles a companion to accompany you on unlimited Southwest Airlines for just the price of taxes and fees. The Southwest Companion Pass is earned through flying on the airline, eligible spending on a Southwest cobranded credit card or a combination of both.

Delta also offers a companion ticket as a perk for holders of select credit cards .

If you're carrying a credit card with lounge access, Seattle-Tacoma is the better bet with 10 lounges. Seattle Paine Field has none.

SEA's options include three Alaska Airlines lounges (which are also open to American Airlines Admirals Club members) and a United Club, Delta Sky Club and British Airways Terrace Lounge. In addition to the airline lounges, the American Express Centurion Lounge welcomes holders of select credit cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card .

How to get to the Port of Seattle

There are several ways to get from the airports to the Bell Street Terminal at Pier 66 or Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91, including:

Cruise line transfers

Most cruise lines offer transportation to and from SEA or local hotels for an added cost. Sometimes, the service is reserved for cruisers who purchase flights through the cruise line. For example, Carnival Cruise Line advertises shuttles starting at $37.99 per person from SEA to the cruise port for passengers arriving by noon on embarkation day.

At this time, no cruise lines offer transfers to/from PAE.

Hotel shuttle services

If you're looking for hotels near the Seattle cruise port with a shuttle to the cruise terminals, you'll find several downtown. Most charge $10-$20 per person for the service.

If you're on a mission to earn more Marriott Bonvoy points, the SpringHill Suites Seattle Downtown/South Lake Union offers a package including an upgraded suite, complimentary breakfast and transportation for two to the cruise terminals. If you're loyal to the Hilton Honors program, the Embassy Suites by Hilton Seattle Tacoma International Airport contracts shuttle service to the cruise ports for $27 per person each way or $50 round-trip.

Independent airport shuttle services

Companies like Premier Airport Shuttle offer shared or private transportation from SEA to the cruise terminals. Shared shuttle service starts at about $33 per person in each direction, while private transfers for up to 20 passengers start at about $320.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

Ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft can be summoned from either airport. This is another opportunity to maximize your credit card benefits since the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers 10 points for every dollar spent on Lyft rides (through March 31, 2025).

Uber and Lyft prices are highly dynamic, but you can expect to pay $70 for each direction to and from SEA, or $100 to and from PAE.

Taxis aren't readily available at PAE, but you'll find them on the third floor of the SEA parking garage adjacent to the ride-hail pickup area. Flat-rate taxis charge $40 to carry passengers from the airport to the hotel district. Flat rates aren't in effect to the cruise terminals. Metered rates in Seattle are $2.60 for the meter drop plus $2.70 a mile. (The 17-mile trip from SEA to Pier 91 should run $48.50 in a metered cab, but extra passengers, alternative routing and other considerations can raise the rates.)

Private car or van service

Private cars or vans can be scheduled to or from either airport. Options include Blacklane , with prices starting at about $108 in each direction from SEA to the cruise ports (including pick up in a luxury vehicle and a meet and greet at baggage claim). The same service to or from PAE starts at about $130 in each direction.

Public transportation

Unfortunately, public transit doesn't reach the cruise terminals, but Light Rail provides transportation from SEA to West Lake Station in downtown Seattle. From there, it's usually an 8- to 15-minute Lyft or Uber ride to the cruise terminals. One-way tickets are $2.25-$3.25 per person and trains depart every 15 minutes.

To reach the light rail station at SEA, head to the fourth floor and cross the sky bridge into the parking garage. Next, follow the signs and painted pathway to the train. Shuttle service is available for passengers with disabilities from 5 a.m. until midnight. Call 206-787-4069 or 206-787-5906 to request service.

Cruise port of Seattle parking

On-site parking

The Bell Street Cruise Terminal parking garage is right across from the cruise terminal. Enter from Wall Street and follow the signs to the parking area. Parking costs $23 per day, with a $1 per day discount if you prepay online.

The Bell Street parking garage offers more than 1,500 covered parking spots, including 25 accessible parking stalls, and can accommodate vehicles with a maximum clearance of 6 feet, 6 inches. Vehicles exceeding this height should park at Pier 91, and taxi vouchers will be provided to get you back and forth to Pier 66.

The Smith Cove Cruise Terminal Lot D parking lot at Pier 91 has 1,100 secure parking spots, including accessible stalls available on a first-come, first-served basis. General parking is $29 a day, with a $1-per-day discount if you prepay online.

In addition to serving passengers departing from Pier 91, Lot D is the parking lot for RV and oversized vehicles at both piers. Fees are $60 a day for vehicles less than 40 feet, and $65 per day for vehicles larger than 40 feet. RV parking isn't guaranteed unless reserved and prepaid online. If your cruise departs from the Bell Street Cruise Terminal, the cashier will issue taxi vouchers for your return.

Park-and-cruise packages

Depending on the length of your cruise, select Seattle hotels allow you to leave your car while you're at sea (although most charge a fee). Fans of the Accor Live Limitless loyalty program should consider the cruise package at the Hotel Andra Seattle. The package includes 50% off valet parking, complimentary parking during the cruise and a one-way shuttle service for two from the hotel to the cruise pier.

Hotels near the Seattle cruise port

Seattle has an outstanding lineup of points hotels. The best redemption deals are usually found near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It's roughly a half-hour from the cruise terminals without traffic, but the trade-off might be worth it for some travelers.

Visitors planning to explore Seattle before or after a cruise should base themselves downtown for easy access to the waterfront, restaurants, shops, museums and attractions like Seattle Center and the Space Needle. As a bonus, many of the best Seattle hotels are a 5- to 15-minute drive from the cruise terminals.

Hilton hotels near Port of Seattle

Hilton Honors members are spoiled for choices in Seattle. The Hampton Inn Seattle-Airport is a great option for travelers looking for a quick place to catch some shut-eye the night before the cruise (34,000 to 50,000 Hilton Honors points per night). Amenities include a free hot breakfast and complimentary shuttle service to or from the airport.

For Hilton hotels closer to the cruise terminals, Hilton Seattle (50,000 to 70,000 Hilton Honors points per night) is only 1.4 miles from Pier 66. If you've got time to explore the city, the property is a mile from the 5th Avenue Theater, Pike Place Market and light rail.

For luxury travelers, Hotel 1000 LXR Hotels and Resorts (70,000-90,000 Hilton Honors points per night) is a gorgeous hotel with views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Even the bathrooms are a showstopper with glass walls (and privacy shades). Hotel 1000 is roughly a half-mile from Pike Place Market and the Seattle Aquarium and a short walk to dozens of restaurants. The hotel is 1.2 miles from Pier 66.

Marriott hotels near Port of Seattle

Keep your Marriott Bonvoy loyalty number handy because Marriott hotel brands are located throughout Seattle. You'll get a lot of bang for your buck at the Aloft Seattle Seatac Airport (22,000-40,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night), especially if you don't want to rent a car. Amenities include complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport and shuttle service to the cruise terminal for $20 per person. (Make arrangements at the front desk at check-in.)

If you plan to play tourist in the Emerald City, the Courtyard Seattle/Downtown Pioneer Square (30,000-54,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night) is in a historic building within walking distance of the Pike Place Market, stadium, art galleries and the waterfront. The hotel is 1.6 miles from Pier 66.

It's hard to beat the location of the Seattle Marriott Waterfront (50,000-84,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). The hotel is right across from Pier 66, and passengers can walk to the terminal via crosswalk or sky bridge. This is a great option for families since you're steps away from top waterfront attractions like the Seattle Aquarium and the Seattle Great Wheel.

Hyatt hotels near Port of Seattle

Seattle is an excellent place to cash in those World of Hyatt points . The brand doesn't have any properties at the airport, but you'll find several excellent Hyatts downtown .

Hyatt Place Seattle Downtown (12,000-18,000 World of Hyatt points per night) is located near Climate Pledge Arena, the Seattle Center and the Space Needle. Complimentary breakfast is available in the morning. The hotel contracts shuttle service to the cruise terminals from a third party for $10 per person. Reservations need to be made at least 24 hours in advance.

Thompson Seattle (17,000-23,000 World of Hyatt points per night) is a stylish boutique in the heart of downtown. Famous for a rooftop bar with dazzling views of the city and Puget Sound, the Thompson is a short walk from Pike Place Market, the Seattle Art Museum, and dozens of shops and restaurants. The hotel is less than a mile from Pier 66.

Non-points hotels near Port of Seattle

Seattle is home to several hotels that aren't associated with traditional loyalty programs. The Four Seasons Hotel Seattle sits above the waterfront with an infinity pool with views of Puget Sound. The Four Seasons is a mile from Pier 66. Don't forget to book your room with a rewards card to maximize your stay.

Another solid option is the more affordably priced Ace Hotel Seattle, in the trendy Belltown neighborhood. Guests can choose accommodations with private or shared baths according to their needs and budget. The Ace Hotel is less than a half-mile from Pier 66.

Restaurants near the cruise port of Seattle

Seattle is famous for seafood served at upscale restaurants, sushi counters and casual poke joints. Dungeness crab, salmon and oysters on the half-shell are staples all over the city, especially near the waterfront.

Head to Pike Place Market for a culinary tour of the city. In addition to vendors selling flowers and handmade crafts, you'll find bakeries, breweries, sit-down restaurants and quick eats like hot dogs or chowder. While you're there, don't miss the chance to watch fish being thrown to delighted customers at Pike Place Fish Market.

If you see a long line outside Pike Place Market, that's probably tourists waiting to place an order at the original Starbucks. If you are a huge fan of the chain, the wait might be worthwhile, but the coffee here is the same as in any Starbucks location. If you'd rather skip the line, head to Storyville Coffee on the top floor of the corner market building for an excellent cup of locally roasted coffee with stunning views of Puget Sound.

Seattle’s streets hide a forgotten sailing ship buried during the 1800s

IT’S SAFE TO ASSUME that Seattle is the only American city with a nearly forgotten sailing ship buried below its downtown streets.

At 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 30, 1876, the Windward ran aground at Whidbey Island’s Useless Bay, having mistaken a beach fire for the Admiralty Point Lighthouse during what a keeper called “a perfect gale.” Hauling 525,000 board feet of lumber from James Colman’s mill on Seattle’s waterfront, the 650-ton bark was bound for San Francisco, helmed by Capt. A.E. Williams with a crew of 15.

Williams, wrote the Puget Sound Dispatch, returned to Seattle by canoe on New Year’s Day with grim news. The Windward, he reported, “is now lying, dismasted and on her beam ends … about a mile from the beach.” Owned by Colman (known for Colman Dock) and partners, the vessel was only partially insured, though most of its cargo was saved.

Declared a complete loss, the Windward was towed back to Seattle and deposited on tideflats.

For years to come, its distinctive oak hull photobombed panoramic portraits of Seattle’s waterfront. Colman used it for storage and allegedly maintained a bedsit (what French wits might call a pied-à-mer) in its deck cabins.

One day, teenaged Charles Kinnear, whose father, George, donated Queen Anne Hill’s Kinnear Park to Seattle, swam to the hulk at low tide. “We boys tore copper from her bottom and dived from her decks,” he later recalled. Though the tall masts had long disappeared, Kinnear said, “They provided many souvenir canes” for local dandies.

On occasion, the derelict hosted festivity. On July 2, 1877, the Daily Intelligencer suggested, “Walking a greased pole, for a ten dollar prize, off the old bark Windward will be very amusing.”

In the late 1880s, with the filling in of then-Railroad Avenue (today’s Alaskan Way), the vessel was buried intact. Debris from the 1889 Great Seattle Fire extended the fill.

Every few decades since then, Seattle historians have remembered the Windward’s underground presence.

Clarence Bagley in 1901 reminded readers of the “dismantled craft … that still lies in the mud” on Western Avenue “with her stern projecting into Marion Street.”

In 1949, Seattle Times columnist C.T. Conover re-imagined it under the same streets “throbbing with modern traffic … its bow pointed toward the harbor as if eager to [revisit] scenes of its former glory.”

And in 1982, Paul Dorpat whimsically suggested that the Windward “no longer sways with the tides … [but] permanently jaywalks below Western Avenue.”

Today, aiming time’s arrow once again, we encourage waterfront visitors to take a dreamy breath and envision Seattle’s buried maritime treasure beneath their feet.
