IATA Travel Pass set to help international passengers

IATA announced that it is in the final development phase of the IATA Travel Pass, a digital health pass that will support the safe reopening of borders.

Governments are beginning to use testing as a means of limiting the risks of COVID-19 importation when re-opening their borders to travelers without quarantine measures. IATA Travel Pass will manage and verify the secure flow of necessary testing or vaccine information among governments, airlines, laboratories, and travelers.

IATA is calling for systematic COVID-19 testing of all international travelers and the information flow infrastructure needed to enable this must support:

  • Governments with the means to verify the authenticity of tests and the identity of those presenting the test certificates.
  • Airlines with the ability to provide accurate information to their passengers on test requirements and verify that a passenger meets the requirements for travel.
  • Laboratories with the means to issue digital certificates to passengers that will be recognized by governments.
  • Travelers with accurate information on test requirements, where they can get tested or vaccinated, and the means to securely convey test information to airlines and border authorities.

“Today borders are double locked. Testing is the first key to enable international travel without quarantine measures. The second key is the global information infrastructure needed to securely manage, share, and verify test data matched with traveler identities in compliance with border control requirements. That’s the job of IATA Travel Pass. We are bringing this to market in the coming months to also meet the needs of the various travel bubbles and public health corridors that are starting operation,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

IATA Travel Pass incorporates four open sourced and interoperable modules, which can be combined for an end-to-end solution:

  • Global registry of health requirements – enables passengers to find accurate information on travel, testing, and eventually vaccine requirements for their journey.
  • Global registry of testing/vaccination centers – enables passengers to find testing centers and labs at their departure location which meet the standards for testing and vaccination requirements of their destination.
  • Lab App – enables authorized labs and test centers to securely share test and vaccination certificates with passengers.
  • Contactless Travel App – enables passengers to (1) create a ‘digital passport’, (2) receive test and vaccination certificates and verify that they are sufficient for their itinerary, and (3) share testing or vaccination certificates with airlines and authorities to facilitate travel. This app can also be used by travelers to manage travel documentation digitally and seamlessly throughout their journey, improving travel experience.

IATA and International Airlines Group (IAG) have been working together in the development of this solution and will undertake a trial to demonstrate that this platform combined with COVID-19 testing can reopen borders.

The first cross-border IATA Travel Pass pilot is scheduled for later this year and the launch slated for Q1 2021.

Iata Travel Pass: An ultimate guide to using the digital coronavirus passport

'the national' tests out the mobile app at abu dhabi airport as etihad's passenger trials begin, uae tests iata's digital passport for travel during pandemic.

UAE tests IATA's digital passport for travel during pandemic

Covid-19 has changed the way we travel . Health requirements like testing and vaccinations are having a greater impact on where and when people can fly.

To try to help restart the industry, the International Air Transport Association has developed a digital pass.

This mobile app is designed to give travellers the information they need before flying to any destination while securely verifying that passengers meet Covid-19 health requirements for any journey.

Our new partnership with Eurofins will add 800 #COVID19 test centers across 50 countries to the #IATATravelPass lab network. Fast, secure, high-quality testing is critical in the fight against the pandemic & enabling a return to normalized travel. 👉 https://t.co/MdvmTwfjyf pic.twitter.com/F5YLmX5LPt — IATA (@IATA) April 16, 2021

The app is one of several digital initiatives currently in trial phases . More than 25 airlines, including Etihad, the national airline of the UAE, and Dubai's Emirates, have partnered with Iata to begin testing the mobile app with travellers on select flights.

Starting on Tuesday, travellers flying with Etihad on select routes will be invited to take part in the airline's Iata travel pass trials.

The National got the chance to trial the technology to find out exactly how it works and what travellers can expect if the digital pass is approved.

What is the Iata Travel Pass?

The Iata Travel Pass is a free mobile app that allows travellers to register their personal details, find out Covid-related testing requirements for their destination and share pre-departure Covid-19 test results with airlines ahead of flying.

In the future, there are also plans that the app will house vaccination records to help facilitate easier travel between countries demanding people show proof of having had a coronavirus vaccine.

What documents do I need to use the Iata Travel Pass?

To use the digital pass, passengers will need a biometric passport.

As the app is currently in trial stages, travellers will only be able to use it if they are flying with an airline and on a route where it is being tested.

For travellers flying Etihad, it will be trialled on flights between Abu Dhabi and Chicago, New York, Washington and Toronto from Tuesday until Monday, May 31.

How do I use the Iata Travel Pass?

Travellers must take several selfies using the app to confirm their identity before they can register travel details. Courtesy Iata

  • Download the Iata Travel Pass from the Apple store.
  • Register by following the on-screen instructions, including taking several selfies from different angles. The app will determine that you are a real person.
  • Scan your biometric passport. The app will read the information from your passport photo page and from the inset digital chip.
  • Add flight details by selecting the relevant airline and choosing a flight from the dropdown menu. The app will then explain what the travel requirements are for that destination.
  • Visit an approved lab and take a PCR test. As part of Etihad's Iata Travel Pass trials, passengers can visit Life Diagnostics in Abu Dhabi or G42 Biogenix Labs in Masdar City.
  • Receive PCR results, with an average processing time of eight to 12 hours. Once results are uploaded, travellers will be informed if their health status allows them to complete their journey.
  • Travel to the airport to check-in. Fast-track queues are being set up at Abu Dhabi Airport for Etihad travellers taking part in the Iata Travel Pass trials.

What are the benefits of using the digital pass?

Travellers using the Iata travel pass will see faster check-in times at airports. Courtesy Iata

Each traveller using the app will benefit from a faster check-in time. Etihad estimates it could save between 15 minutes and one hour per passenger, depending on how busy the airport is.

Passengers taking part in the trials with Etihad will also be given priority check-in, and a voucher for 90mb of free internet access that can be used in-air.

The app is contactless, meaning there's less need for travellers to handle documents when checking in.

If approved, the Iata Travel Pass could have several benefits that will help  boost the restart of the travel industry .

In addition to providing accurate information on testing requirements for individual destinations, it will allow travellers to securely convey their test information to airlines and border authorities while simultaneously allowing authorities to verify the authenticity of this information.

Can I use the Iata Travel Pass on any airline?

At the moment, the app is being trialled on Etihad flights from Abu Dhabi to Chicago, New York, Washington and Toronto.

Emirates is also trialling the app on select routes, including to Barcelona and from London, with more destinations in the pipeline.

Iceland's borders are open to visitors from a select number of countries who have been vaccinated. Unsplash

Other airlines trialling the pass include Singapore Airlines , Qantas, Gulf Air, Virgin Atlantic, Iberia and Qatar Airways.

Will vaccination information be stored on the app?

At the moment, the digital pass does not contain vaccination information for travellers. However, there are plans for this to be added in the future.

Adding vaccination status is “on the technology road map” for the Iata Travel Pass, said Frank Meyer, Etihad's chief digital officer.

Do I have to take part in the Iata Travel Pass trials?

Meyer confirms: "Passengers who don't want to participate in the trial, can come to the airport as usual with their printed PCR tests and other documents."

Is my data stored safely in the Iata Travel Pass?

The app uses decentralised technology, which means there is no central database holding passenger information.

Passengers will always have ownership of and the sole right to share their data, and users can also delete their data from the app at any time.

"The data is entirely owned by the passenger and at no point in time does the airline have access or ownership of that data. The data only sits on the traveller's personal phone and nowhere else," explains Meyers.

How accurate is the information contained in the app?

The Iata Travel Pass is supported by Timatic’s global travel rules and regulations database. That's the same company that pushes Covid-19 regulation changes to airlines, and is responsible for powering most airlines' check-in systems for passport and visa regulation compliance.

The database is updated more than 200 times a day so travellers using the app can be certain they will have access to the most up-to-date information for their journey.

The iata travel pass – what you need to know.

Looking to fly international in 2021? You might be asked to download and use IATA's new Travel Pass app. The app is aiming to become the go-to digital health passport, containing all your vaccination, testing, and travel requirements. Here's a guide to the upcoming Travel Pass and its features.

Traveling internationally in 2021 is not easy by any means. Even if countries open their borders, the health requirements can prove to be quite a maze. From vaccinations to testing to health declarations, it's easy to miss out on things. However, IATA Travel Pass is here to alleviate most of these troubles.

IATA is also the creator of Timatic, a software that provides airlines with up-to-date health requirements for each country. The Travel Pass app will allow travelers to view their destination's health checks and quickly begin fulfilling them by offer nearby verified testing centers and more.

The app , which is currently under testing with dozens of airlines globally, will also allow travelers to upload all their data onto the secure app. This includes a copy of your physical passport, which will be used to link vaccination records and test results. This allows labs to directly send results to the Travel Pass, preventing any false reports.

At the airport

Once you've uploaded your passport, taken a test at a verified test location (or proved vaccination), and got your results, you're all set to go! A green tick on Travel Pass allows airlines to quickly verify your health details and proceed to check you in for flights.

This means no more long wait times as agents try to navigate individual country restrictions or test results. Airports like London Heathrow have seen hours-long queues as staff members try to deal with multiple new steps before flying. Travel Pass can take over all over this work, pre-verifying you for your journey and details.

However, IATA is not stopping at airlines alone. The industry leader is partnering with governments to make immigration easier too. Panama has become the first country to accept IATA's Travel Pass as proof to enter the country and could be the first of many. This means no more long border checks with passenger locator forms and negative tests.

Currently, the IATA Travel Pass is only open for airline trials. If you're flying with one of the dozens of airlines using the app, including British Airways , Singapore Airlines , LATAM , and many others, you will receive a code from the carrier first.

However, the wider rollout of the Travel Pass could be only weeks away , according to IATA Director General Willie Walsh. Once it is available, expect to see airlines quickly begin to use the app as passengers begin to navigate the new normal of international travel.

For most international travel, you’ll have to provide proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test or proof you’ve recovered from the virus in order to cross borders.

With many travelers and airlines looking for a simple way to store this information digitally, the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Travel Pass health information checking service is being rolled out by more and more airlines, and so are its competitors like CommonPass and VeriFLY. They’re not vaccination passports, so what are they, how do they work, who’s behind them—and should you use them?

What is the IATA Travel Pass?

The IATA Travel Pass is one of a variety of “health credential” services that some airlines are using to help them check the validity of the proof you send them of your COVID-19 status—whether that’s your vaccination, a recent test, recovery from the disease, or a combination of all three.

Read more:  What is a vaccine passport and do I need one to travel?

It’s essentially an app on your phone where you take pictures of your vaccination records, a recent test or the proof you’ve recovered from COVID-19 within a certain time frame specified by the government of wherever you’re traveling to (and sometimes from). These are then checked and your airline is given either a green light or a red light for you to travel, according to the government travel rules of your destination country.

Dozens of airlines are trialling or using it—and other providers’ passes—to help them process your documentation, ideally well before you get to the airport. This helps them reduce queues and the cost of having staff members check your documents in person.

It’s different to the national or regional health pass wallets, like France’s TousAntiCovid , New York’s Excelsior Pass or the UK’s NHS COVID Pass . However, in the future, there may be links between them.

Other passes exist, with CommonPass and VeriFLY also in relatively wide use. Bear in mind that airlines may be trialling multiple pass options on different routes, so check any emails carefully and have a look at their website to confirm which you can use.

How do they work?

You take pictures of your documentation or upload an existing picture, depending on the functionality of the various apps. This is then processed by the app provider’s staff—whether the IATA Travel Pass, CommonPass, VeriFLY or whatever—who confirm whether your documentation is valid.

It can be a bit of a logistical humdinger to need to take a picture of the everyday vaccination pass or test result that lives in one app on your phone with another app on your phone. Keeping paper copies of your vaccination certificates and test results can be very helpful, but in a pinch you can always find a friend to send them to, and then take a picture of their phone.

Once the processing is done, which usually is a matter of minutes or hours, you essentially get a green light that you’re good to go, or a red light that means you can’t travel until you’ve fixed a problem.

That might be because: you’re vaccinated with a vaccine not recognised in your destination; you sent in the wrong type of test (antigen not PCR, say); your test wasn’t taken recently enough (perhaps it was taken 49 hours before you are supposed to travel, but your destination requires it to be less than 48); or simply that they weren’t able to read your documents.

Read more: PCR tests for travel: everything you need to know

Do keep an eye out for this—getting another vaccination isn’t exactly a fixable problem, but getting another test might not be the end of the world.

Who runs these passes?

IATA’s travel pass is run by an airline trade industry group, the International Air Transport Association , which is sort of a Better Business Bureau for airlines. Remember, IATA is not a governmental or intergovernmental body, it’s an airline association.

CommonPass is run by a non-profit public trust with links to the World Economic Forum (sometimes referred to as Davos, after the location of its annual meeting) and the Rockefeller Foundation.  VeriFLY , meanwhile, is a product of biometric authentication software business Daon . Airlines are essentially outsourcing the verification to these apps, but in some cases, airlines are requesting that you upload the relevant information to them directly.

If you’re concerned about what happens to your data, that’s certainly a valid concern. As one example, British Airways uses VeriFLY for all flights into the UK. But its small print says: “The VeriFLY App is completely independent of British Airways and you are submitting your information directly to Daon (acting as the data controller), please check Daon’s privacy policy and terms and conditions.” However, it’s worth reading the fine print on VeriFLY to fully understand how your data will be used.

Where will I use a travel pass, is it mandatory, and should I use it?

A growing number of airlines are using them, so you’re likely to be seeing them the next time you take an international flight.

At present, they’re usually not fully required, but you can expect to receive multiple emails encouraging you to use them. You may also start seeing fast-track queues for people who have taken the time to enter their data. After all, it will take less time for an expert on these processes to check your documents remotely a day in advance than for a stressed check-in agent to try to figure out whether your vaccination certificate is valid or not.

So should you use it? Well, if you have privacy concerns, those seem valid—this technology has been developed pretty quickly, and it’s worth reading the privacy policies of the app should you have any reservations.

Travel passports: how to ensure passenger data is kept safe

In March around 20 airlines began trialling the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) new travel passport app, which will allow passengers to easily share Covid-19 vaccine and test records for international travel. With the advent of more digital solutions for tracking passengers’ health records, does the industry need to be careful about potential health data leaks, and how does it ensure customer’s safety is protected on apps? We speak to industry body IATA to find out.

Health and travel pass apps are being introduced all over the world in a desperate attempt by governments to allow the aviation industry to take off again, while mitigating the risk of importing Covid-19.

This new technology allows accurate information regarding passenger health to be presented to government officials and airlines such as their vaccination status and test information which is required to allow them to travel.

However, concerns around safety and security of passenger data are a hot topic of discussion for members of the public. Apprehension around data leaks, who has access to private information, and how it is being used are setting off alarm bells for some passengers.

Organisations such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have developed their travel pass to follow stringent data protection guidelines, not only ensuring passenger data is safely secured but to also boost passenger confidence.

Standardised testing

IATA have launched their own travel pass initiative to address the challenges governments currently face surrounding opening borders during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The introduction of this platform will not only provide a safe, secure location for passengers to store their test and vaccine data but also have access to information regarding which measures they will need prior to travel. The pass also provides passengers details on where they can go to take a Covid-19 test at verified centres.

IATA are currently creating a registry of all test centres which are government recognised by obtaining government lists for all labs currently running within the country.

To access the travel pass, travellers will download the IATA travel pass app which will require them to create a digital version of their passport. Passengers are then required to go to test centres to either acquire a Covid-19 test or vaccination, leaving them with not only their digital passport on their phone, but also their test or vaccination results.

This information is then run through the IATA system called Timatic – a system which has been used by airlines and travel agents for over 60 years – to verify passenger data and requirements against border control regulations.

The system has now been updated to include worldwide Covid-19 regulations, which allows IATA to compare passenger data to restrictions.

Alan Murray Hayden, head airport passenger and security products, IATA explains: “We look through the data and we say, ‘is this test sufficient for that destination?’

“We’re checking things like; is it the right type of test? Was the test taken the right way? Is the time period correct when it was taken? Then if it’s okay, then the passenger can then share it with the airline.”

Global data privacy

Due to the sensitive nature of the health information being shared via the platform, data security and passenger privacy is of the upmost importance to IATA. The association developed the travel pass with a decentralised identity management system, to ensure all the passenger’s private information and data is stored only on their phone, never externally.

The passenger is also in control of who the data can be seen by, through clicking ‘share now’ on their phone. Once selected, the data is only shared with their corresponding airline, the same as other security documents such as visas, passports, and identification cards.

Hayden explains: “All of the passengers data resides on their phone. We don’t have it centrally, we never see it, we never have access to it. We have software on the phone app which analyses their itinerary and says that you’re flying with British Airways , do you want to share your details with British Airways?

“At that point, the passenger can choose to share it, but the main point is, it’s the passenger who choose to share it. If they choose to share it, it gets sent directly to the airline. It never goes through any other system; we don’t store it.”

Hayden stresses that the creation of the travel pass by IATA was only to assist the industry moving forward, and not to collect traveller information. The data can also be removed at any time by the passenger by simply deleting the app.

He says: “The idea behind this app is to open up aviation again, it’s not to build up a database or intelligence. We have purposely gone the other extreme where we want nothing to do with passenger data.

“We are facilitating and sharing the data with the airline which you have to do anyway when you go to an airport when you hand over your passport, all we’re doing is making it much more efficient.”

Travel pass trials

The IATA travel pass has been successfully trialled on an international flight from Singapore to London. The passenger was able to use the app to manage their travel health credentials which were shared with Singapore Airlines . This demonstrated that the technology can securely and efficiently assist passengers and airlines to manage health information.

In a press release addressing the success of the trial JoAnn Tan, acting senior vice president marketing planning, Singapore Airlines, said: “The first phase of the trials helped to support SIA’s drive towards a secure and convenient industry standard for the verification of COVID-19 test results, and the health status of passengers including their vaccination status, in the future.”

“That gives us the confidence that in the second phase, we can further streamline the verification process for eventual integration into SIA’s mobile application. This will help to provide a hassle-free digital solution for our customers in the new normal and help to bring about a more seamless travel experience.”

The travel pass is currently being trialled by airlines including Qantas, Emirates and Korean Air, which will not only allow IATA to ensure the successful working of the technology, but also ensure the process is as smooth as possible for passengers.

Passport control and getting into Moscow

FWIW We arrived in Moscow yesterday and it took 90 minutes to get through passport control. We had booked a car into the hotel; train would have been better and cheaper but we are old and have too much luggage to do this. Just one medium suitcase each and heavy messenger bags with the electronics and a camera bag for me; for ten weeks two climates. The car took two hours to get to our hotel; the traffic was incredible -- a parking lot coming into town. So we landed at 1:30 and didn't get to the hotel till neary 5.

We were in St. Petersburg a year ago. Getting through passport control is not much fun--with big, stern Russian lady customs agents controlling the lines. Russia just doesn't have many controlled access highways. St. Pete was like pedestrian vs. traffic--dangerous place to walk with many aggressive drivers and few 4 lane highways. I can see where Moscow traffic could be a nightmare. Have a great trip.

We went through immigration and customs in St. Petersburg Pulkovo Airport and it was a breeze. Nothing compared to Seattle. But traffic in Moscow was horrendous. Traffic jam in Seattle is nothing. I was in Moscow before, in 1983 when it was under iron fist of Andropov. Those enormously wide boulevards were then almost empty. Few government limousines, trucks and trolleybuses. I never imagined that those boulevards would ever get filled. Thank God for their Metro although stations are far apart and you have to walk a lot but still faster than a car.

We got through Passport Control in St. Petersburg fairly quickly last year -- nothing like Moscow yesterday. But the people ahead of us, a couple of young men, tied up the line for about 20 minutes when first the agent spent a lot of time with them, then men in uniforms were summoned, then men in different uniforms were summoned and then a couple of guys in suits were summoned and the two young men were hauled off somewhere. Officious uniformed woman assigning lines would not allow us to change to one of the many other lines going quickly.

Are you flying out of DME airport? If so, train to the airport is rather fast and has lots of room for luggage. Perhaps you could cab from your hotel to the train station. We took the metro to the train station- not recommended with lots of luggage- many transfers and steps. Moscow traffic is horrible

We are flying out of Petersburg later this week and will arrange transport with the hotel -- I recall it being easy last year -- we will see. I would definitely take the train in Moscow even with luggage -- the traffic is horrendous and our two hour trip in convinced me not to risk that on exit if taking a plane from there.
