Saudi tourist visa on arrival for UK, US and Schengen visa holders

The General Authority of Civil Aviation has instructed national air carriers to allow the holders of these visas to travel to Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Tourism & National Heritage has announced that visitors to the kingdom who have a valid UK, US or Schengen visa are eligible for tourist visas on arrival at airports and border crossings, irrespective of their citizenship.

However, visitors wishing to avail the facility need to have used their UK, US or Schengen visas before entering Saudi Arabia and the visas need to be valid until their planned exit from the kingdom. The eligible visas for those countries can include commercial or tourism categories.

The General Authority of Civil Aviation has instructed national air transport companies to allow the holders of these visas to permit travel to Saudi Arabia.

Currently, citizens from 49 countries are eligible to apply for an e-visa online or get a visa on arrival into Saudi Arabia.

The tourist visa permits a stay of up to three months per entry, with visitors able to spend 90 days per year in the kingdom. The visa is valid for one year, and allows multiple entries.

The announcement came via the state-run Saudi Press Agency and quoted a source within the general authority as adding that there is an existing committee chaired by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for Tourism and National Heritage, Ahmed bin Aqeel Al-Khatib, working to define the goals and the mechanism for applying the structure of the visitor visas.

In an interview with Bloomberg in November last year, Al-Khatib said that British tourists, followed by Chinese, were the top visitors to the kingdom under the new tourist visas which were launched in September.

Saudi Arabia To Allow Schengen Visa Holders To Enter Without Extra Approval

UK, US, and Schengen visa holders around the world will soon be able to enter Saudi Arabia without additional pre-approval so that anyone already holding visas for these areas will be allowed to come visit the country hassle-free.

In late September 2019, Saudi Arabia announced that it would be opening its doors to tourists, providing visas to people of 49 different nationalities in an event called ‘Open Hearts, Open Doors.’

The new measure comes as part of Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil.

‘Open Hearts, Open Doors’ includes two phases: phase one began in September, and will focus on attracting travelers with culture, heritage, nature, and adventure. The second phase will begin in 2022 and will focus on attracting tourists for the sea and sun.

Sine the initiative took flight on September27th, 91,000 visas have already been issued, according to Fahd Hamidaddin, Chief of Investment, Strategy and Tourism Marketing, Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage.

Most of these visas are issued to citizens of China, the UK, the US, and Canada. The demographics of the travelers are primarily of the age group 40-42, 52% men and 48% women.

Saudi Arabia is moving quickly to establish themselves in the tourism market, and to establish tourism partnerships.

“We’re already looking at joint programmes; we are collaborating with the UAE on our first joint visa. It’s not yet out, but we’re working on it. There will also be commercial collaborations. People who are seeking culture, would probably want to go to the pyramids, Petra and then to Al Ula,” said Hamidaddin.

Hamidaddin went on to say “we’re coming late in the game and we have to leapfrog if we really want to make it to the top five destinations in the world by 2030.”

Although it could still take a few weeks to become official, all of this could be good news for Schengen citizens and Schengen visa holders worldwide who are curious about Saudi Arabia, as it will be easier to enter and explore the country than ever before.

Saudi Arabia is also preparing for increased numbers of travelers by increasing airport capacity by 150 million passengers per year. The country also expects to increase international and domestic visits to 100 million per year by 2030, attract a significant amount of foreign and domestic investment, and create 1 million jobs. The goal is to raise the tourism sector of the Saudi GDP from the current 3% to 10% by 2030.

Citizens from European Union countries planning to travel to Saudi Arabia will be subject to the new tourist visa scheme that the latter’s authorities have introduced in order to increase the number of international visitors to the country.

Regarding the issue, the Tourism Minister of Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Al Khateeb announced that it signed a new decree in order to facilitate the travel process for internationals planning to visit this country, .

Authorities in Saudi Arabia also confirmed that holders of valid tourist or business visas to the UK or Schengen Zone countries are also eligible to apply for a visa on arrival, provided that the other visa has been used at least once in order to enter the issuing country.

It has also been revealed that the new tourist visa scheme can also benefit residents from the United States as well as those from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

“Elevating the visitor experience is at the heart of the tourism sector’s future. Through harnessing digital innovation and streamlining the traveller’s journey, Saudi Arabia is welcoming more and more visitors,” Tourism Minister Al Khateeb pointed out in this regard.

Back in March, authorities in Saudi Arabia announced that they decided to reinstate visas on arrival for travellers who hold valid Schengen or UK visas. The decision was confirmed by Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Minister in an announcement for the State News Agency.

“Reinstating the visa-on-arrival programme marks the final step in returning Saudi to a pre-pandemic level of openness and makes it one of the most accessible destinations in the world for leisure, business and religious travel. Furthermore, this decision by the government will further support the many thousands of people who depend on tourism for their livelihoods while welcoming the world back to the destination with the warm hospitality for which the Saudi people are renowned,” Al-Khateeb stressed.

Regarding the latest announcement taken to ease the travel process for internationals from Schengen, EU and UK travellers, the Minister said that it was part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and an important step in developing a sustainable tourism sector.

Vision 2030 is a plan introduced to help the country’s economic sector to improve, especially to help the development of several sectors such as tourism, education and technology.

Recently, the European Union’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Patrick Simonnet, stressed that the EU is continuously working on a system that aims at visa-free travelling for citizens of Gulf countries.
