Mike Birbiglia's The New One Tickets

Mike Birbiglia brings his latest show to Broadway.

This show is closed.

Performances ended on Jan. 20, 2019.

News & Features

About mike birbiglia's the new one on broadway, video & photos.

Mike Birbiglia said, “I’m so excited to be bringing The New One to The Cort Theater on Broadway which is where I saw the great Kenneth Lonergan play This Is Our Youth . Which is fitting because this show is about somebody’s youth. Not mine. But somebody’s! I won’t tell you any more than that. The truth is I try not to tell people anything about my new show because, I find, the less you know about the show the more you will enjoy it. My goal is to make as many people laugh as possible and ideally several hundred will cry. My producer Kevin McCollum and the Shubert Organization are letting me do that in a space that will accommodate the right amount of people. Which is about 1,100. I’m pretty sure there are union regulations about entertaining more than 1,100 people at once. So we will limit it to 1,100 people laughing and 300 people crying. A lot of people thank their spouses when they make something but with this show I really do have to thank my wife, Jennifer Hope Stein, because she wrote a lot of the best lines. She’s a writer on the show and that was important to me because I wanted to convey the truth about what we experienced together- which I will tell you nothing more about. But man is it gonna make you laugh. And cry. (Please abide by the union crying vs. laughing regulations.) And I’m thrilled to share this journey with my wife Jen, my director Seth Barrish and designers Beowulf Boritt, Aaron Copp and Leon Rothenberg, as well as my longtime collaborators Ira Glass and Joe Birbiglia. We’re bringing this squad to a new party. Hopefully there’s pizza.”

Cast & Creative

Mike Birbiglia is a comedian, storyteller, director, actor and New York Times best-selling author, who has performed in front of audiences worldwide, from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall. He has written and performed a series of award-winning solo plays, including Sleepwalk with Me, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend and Thank God for Jokes — all of which earned Lortel Award nominations for Best Solo Show, with My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend winning the 2011 Award. His last Broadway show, The New One , won the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Solo Performance. Following their acclaimed runs on & off Broadway, The New One, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend , and Thank God for Jokes , were all filmed for Netflix. In addition to performing live, Birbiglia is an author and filmmaker who wrote, directed and starred in the acclaimed feature films Sleepwalk with Me and Don’t Think Twice . His book, Sleepwalk with Me and Other Painfully True Stories was a New York Times Bestseller and a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. In 2017, Birbiglia was honored with the Kurt Vonnegut Award for humor. As an actor, Birbiglia’s credits include Danny Pearson on Orange is the New Black , Oscar Langstraat on Showtime’s Billions , HBO’s Girls  and Broad City , and Inside Amy Schumer , as well as in the films Trainwreck, The Fault in Our Stars, Popstar , and the forthcoming Marc Foster film A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks. He is a contributor to “This American Life” on public radio, is host of the podcast Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out, and recently stepped in as guest host of Jimmy Kimmel Live!  on ABC when Kimmel was out with Covid-19.

Jennifer Lopez's Rough Month: Cancels Tour Amid Shaky Sales And Rumors

Jennifer Lopez canceled her “This Is Me… Live” tour to spend more time with her family and children, she told fans in a statement , saying the decision was “necessary”—though the tour had been plagued by reports of low sales and multiple canceled dates.

Lopez said she was “heartsick and devastated” in a statement posted to her website Friday afternoon, telling fans she is “taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends” and that tickets would be refunded.

The tour had previously been marred by reports of poor ticket sales, with seven dates canceled earlier in March, reportedly citing a “logistical issue through the promoter.”

The cancellation comes amid a rough several months for Lopez, who has faced widespread speculation about the state of her marriage with Ben Affleck, and viral posts ridiculing her on social media.

The tour had also previously been rebranded from a promotional effort for her latest album, “This Is Me… Now”—which struggled to sell and only peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200—to a greatest hits tour spanning her entire catalog.

Lopez announced her tour, then titled “This Is Me… Now: The Tour,” in February, originally intended to support her latest album. But the album sold significantly less than her previous releases, selling just 14,000 copies in its debut week , just over a third of the 33,000 copies her previous album “A.K.A.” sold in 2014—which was her lowest sales week at the time. The new album was one part of a reportedly self-financed , $20 million effort that also included a film—“This Is Me... Now: A Love Story,” inspired by her relationship with Affleck—and a documentary. The trailer for the film went viral on social media because of its seemingly bizarre plot, though it was generally well received by critics with a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes . Lopez’s tour was set to span 30 cities in North America between June and August and would have been her first headlining tour in five years.

Key Background

Lopez has had a challenging month, with rumors swirling about the state of her marriage to Affleck, and social media users scrutinizing her past behavior. A years-old interview went viral in March in which she shared her bodega order she would purchase while growing up in the Bronx. “Ham and cheese on a roll with an orange drink — if you know you know — and a small bag of chips,” Lopez said, sparking confusion among social media users, particularly New Yorkers, who did not know what orange drink she was referring to. Lopez clarified in a Harper’s Bazaar interview this week that the orange drink “came in a little plastic container with a little bit of aluminum foil over it” and it “wasn’t called anything except orange drink or grape drink or whatever.” Some posts went viral on social media this week alleging tension between Lopez and her “Atlas” co-star Sterling K. Brown, including one interview clip where Brown says to Lopez: “You’re Puerto Rican? Get out of here,” and starts speaking Spanish while Lopez explains her “comfort meal” of rice and beans to the interviewer.

Lopez’s relationship with Affleck has been the subject of wide speculation in recent weeks as tabloid reports suggest their romance may be on the rocks. Less than two years after the couple married in July 2022 (and two decades after their first split in 2004), speculation grew following reports in May that the two were spotted together for the first time in six weeks, and that Lopez was seen looking for houses in Los Angeles without Affleck. Affleck also skipped the May 21 premiere of Lopez’s film “Atlas,” reportedly because he was filming “The Accountant 2.” Lopez shut down a reporter who asked about the state of her marriage at an “Atlas” press conference on May 22, telling him: “You know better than that.”

Lopez’s acting ventures have seen more success than her music lately: Her film “Atlas” debuted on top of last week’s Netflix chart with 28.2 million views in its first three days, one year after “The Mother” became one of Netflix’s all-time biggest hits (though critics reviewed both films poorly).

Rapper Trippie Redd gives tour of blacked out home; drops sneak peak of new song exclusively on Local 10

Janine Stanwood , Anchor/Reporter

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. – American rapper, singer and songwriter Trippie Redd is working on a new hit, and dropping a sneak peek exclusively on Local 10.

The upcoming single is called “Bando Kid,” and you can listen to a preview of the song below:

Recommended Videos

Redd, whose real name is Michael Lamar White, lives in the middle of horse farms and supersized homes in Southwest Ranches.

But his nearly 19,000-square-foot house is unlike the others: the entire façade, from the roof to the driveway, is completely blacked out.

“It was actually my mom’s idea, but it made so much sense because it’s our favorite color. We love black,” he said.

At 24, Redd’s music has already gone multi-platinum and diamond. He’s collaborated with other big names like Travis Scott, Future, and Machine Gun Kelly. For him, space to create and think was a priority when choosing a home.

“I need a lot of space for my creativity. I can’t function in a small area,” Redd said. “So I like to have my own personal space - privacy.”

Two years ago, the rapper and singer purchased the home for $7.5 million before its owner was planning to foreclose on it.

At the time, it was a typical Mediterranean-style house with a white façade.

Redd decided to cover everything black. It took crews nearly three coats of paint.

He knows the house is sometimes a topic of conversation among his neighbors.

“I like it. It’s food for thought. You can say what you want to say,” he said.

The Ohio-born musical artist is also learning to deal with the perils of South Florida living, like the oppressive heat, red ants and flocks of birds - which seem to be drawn to the black paint.

“The birds just go crazy over the black - they just leave it (with) so much poop!” he laughed.

Redd said he is now perfecting the interior, including his recording studio.

“I’m just growing up and learning; keeping my wealth high,” he said. “And I feel like every building I purchase I’m going to paint it black.”

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. WKBW - Buffalo, New York

Exclusive tour: Inside the construction zone of the new Highmark Stadium, the future home of the Buffalo Bills

new one tour

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WKBW) — It's been called a "once-in-a-generation" project.

Wednesday, June 5, marks exactly one year since construction crews broke ground on the new home of the Buffalo Bills. On Tuesday, 7 News Anchor Jeff Russo went on an exclusive tour of the site to see the progress that's been made over the past 12 months.

new one tour

You can watch a full tour of the stadium below.

"It's really surprising to see how much has been done," said Steven Ranalli, president of the Erie County Stadium Corporation.

Ranalli says the bowl has been cleaned out, the concrete is poured and all of the foundations were finished last week. That included 2,000 trucks full of concrete and 19,000 pieces of steel.

new one tour

450 people are working on the stadium each day, Ranalli told Russo. He says that's expected to balloon up to close to 1,500 in the coming months.

new one tour

Reports estimate the cost of the stadium to now be at $1.7 billion. Ranalli says he suspects that the price will be slightly higher but the Bills are still working on that number with their construction manager.

The public investment for the new stadium is capped at $850 million. That means the owners of the Buffalo Bills, the Pegulas, will be responsible for any overruns.

With the first year of construction on the new Highmark Stadium in the books, what can fans expect to see in year two?

"A whole lot more steel," said Ranalli. "We are going to continue with steel all the way through this year, probably into January of next year. All of the concrete floors on the various decks will be poured, and then we are going to see a lot of the mechanical systems, all of your plumbing, all your electrical, all your heating and air conditioning. Then we will probably be moving into a lot of the interior walls."

WATCH BELOW: With a new stadium coming to Orchard Park, the Buffalo Bills are planning to submit a bid to host the 2028 NFL Draft.

Putin's St Petersburg summit comes right out of the same playbook as China's President Xi Jinping.

So how do you get a read on China's geo-political thinking? One way is by wading through the dry and detailed pronouncements of its president, that's where the nuggets are.

In 2022, Xi said: "The world today is undergoing major changes, unseen in a century.

"The most important characteristic of the world is chaos and the trend is likely to continue."

In the world according to Xi, the time is right to reorder global governance with China at its pinnacle, where it belongs. His view is that the US anchored world order is breaking down.

Many countries in the global south are on board with China, chaffing at the dominance of the US led international system and ready to countenance a shake-up.

Russia is in lock step with China.

Both countries need each other. Though Russia needs China more, for trade and diplomatic cover.

In this great power rivalry, the China-Russian axis could draw in other regional disrupters like Iran and North Korea.

If that happens it will be a formidable alliance based on hostility towards the US, sympathy for Russia, a deep fear of subversion and in the case of China, a relentless goal to unify with Taiwan.

Ukraine's main hydropower company says it has initiated proceedings to secure damages for Russia's destruction of the Kakhovka dam and power station a year ago today.

State-run Ukrhydroenergo said it estimates the damage to be around €2.5bn (£2.12bn).

The explosion of the dam on 6 June 2023 - which sent huge amounts of water across swathes of southern Ukraine and left thousands of people without drinking water - was met with global outcry and accusations of a war crime.

"The company's actions aim to compensate for the losses caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant," Ukrhydroenergo said in a statement.

"The company believes that initiating international arbitration process is the most promising way to compensate for the losses."

The firm said Vladimir Putin, his government and other authorised bodies had been informed.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska have arrived in Normandy for an event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

French President Emmanuel Macron greeted the Ukrainian leader with a hug as he arrived, and the president was applauded as he went to take his place inside the event.

Several other political figures including UK defence minister Grant Shapps embraced Mr Zelenskyy as they greeted him.

Earlier, the Ukrainian president said he was "honoured" to participate in the anniversary event and said he would also take part in "important events and meetings aimed at strengthening our country".

"This event and day serve as a reminder of the courage and determination demonstrated in the pursuit of freedom and democracy," he said.

"Allies defended Europe's freedom then, and Ukrainians do so now. Unity prevailed then, and true unity can prevail today."

Earlier today we reported claims by Russian officials that Ukrainian drones hit an oil refinery and fuel depot in Russian border regions.

Rostov regional governor Vasily Golubev said an overnight drone attack struck the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, causing a fire to erupt.

Meanwhile the governor for Belgorod, a Russian border region which has come under frequent Ukrainian fire during the war, said a drone hit an oil depot and caused an explosion.

No casualties were reported in either attack.

The trial of a US soldier accused of stealing is under way in Russia's far eastern city of Vladivostok.

Staff Sergeant Gordon Black flew to the city to see his girlfriend last month but was arrested after she accused him of stealing from her, US and Russian officials said.

The 34-year-old, who was on leave at the time, faces up to five years in prison if found guilty.

The US army said the soldier had not been given official clearance to travel to Russia's far east.

According to Russian news agency RIA, Sgt Black will give evidence during the trial and respond to the allegations against him.

He has been cooperating with authorities, the report said.

Following today's court session, Sgt Black's girlfriend, Alexandra Vashchuk, told reporters "it was a simple domestic dispute" during which the soldier "became aggressive and attacked" her.

"He then stole money from my wallet and I didn't give him permission to do it," she said.

Joe Biden has just addressed the crowds at the US national D-Day commemoration in Normandy, alongside French president Emmanuel Macron.

The US president began with a retelling of the devastation and evil unleashed on the world by Hitler and told the stories of some veterans in the audience.

"Every one of them knew the probability of dying was real, but they did it anyway," he said.

Mr Biden prayed that America never forgets the importance of alliances, noting NATO as the "greatest military alliance in the history of the world".

"Isolationism was not the answer 80 years ago, and it is not the answer today," he said.

"We know the dark forces that these heroes fought against 80 years ago, they never fade."

He added: "The struggle between dictatorship and freedom is unending. Here in Europe we see one stark example. Ukraine has been invaded by a tyrant bent on domination."

Mr Biden continued: "Make no mistake, the autocrats of the world are watching closely.

"To surrender to bullies, to bow down to dictators, is simply unthinkable. Were we to do that, it means we would be forgetting what happened here on these hallowed beaches.

"History tells us that freedom is not free: If you want to know the price of freedom, come here to Normandy and look."

Russia has detained a French national on suspicion of collecting information on Russian military activity, investigators have said.

The man had visited the country repeatedly over several years, Russia's Investigative Committee said.

He's also said to have held meetings with Russian citizens.

The man has not been named.

The outcome of the US election this November is unlikely to have any impact on Washington's policy towards Russia, Vladimir Putin has said.

In comments cited by the Russian embassy in the UK, the Russian president said the Kremlin does "not think there will be any serious changes".

"You know perfectly well that the current developments in the US are political infighting; they are burning themselves out, their state and their political system," he said.

Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump are their parties' presumptive nominees for the looming election.

Several polls are putting Trump ahead of Mr Biden, despite his recent criminal conviction.

Earlier this year, Mr Putin said he would prefer to see Mr Biden re-elected to the White House as he is "more experienced".

But he has also enjoyed a previous good relationship with Trump, who has often praised his leadership.

Hungary will attend a Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland next week despite Budapest strengthening its ties with Moscow.

Foreign minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed at an economic forum in St Petersburg that his country would be represented at the summit on 15 June.

The summit is aimed at building support among dozens of countries for a 10-point peace proposal from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which includes Russian troops fully withdrawing from Ukrainian territory.

Russia has not been invited, and has branded it a waste of time.

Hungary, an EU and NATO member, has often pushed back against sending Western aid to Ukraine and has been critical of sanctions on Russia.

Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral ties during a meeting in October.

Kendrick Lamar performs in concert.

After making a very public enemy in Drake these past few months, Kendrick Lamar will embrace friendship at his next gig.

The Pulitzer Prize winner just announced via his Instagram Story that he will drop into Los Angeles’ Kia Forum for ‘The Pop Out Ken & Friends Show’ on Wednesday, June 19.

Lamar is yet to reveal any of the “friends” on the lineup at the time of publication. There’s also no word on whether or not he will address his high profile beef where he took aim at Drake on four separate diss tracks including the Billboard Hot 100 chart topper “Not Like Us.”

All we know is 1) the best way to find out is live and that 2) tickets are available to see the Hip-Hop icon live at his one-off Juneteenth concert.

As of today, Kendrick Lamar fans can grab tickets for the Kia Forum show on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale is Friday, June 7.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Kendrick Lamar beef with Drake

This public feud officially goes all the way back to Nov. 2011 when Lamar was featured on Drake’s “Take Care” album.

Over the past 13 years, the two rap titans have gone back and forth until they reached a tipping point when Lamar went on the offensive in March 2024 with his feature on Future & Metro Boomin’s “Like That” where he said “Motherf–k” the big three, n—a, it’s just big me,” taking Drake and J. Cole down a peg.

After that, diss track after diss track dropped for weeks.

For a closer look, you can find Page Six’s complete timeline of their fractured relationship here .

Jack Nicklaus Doesn't Love the Memorial Tournament's New Spot on the PGA Tour Calendar

Bob harig | jun 4, 2024.

Jack Nicklaus's Memorial Tournament is usually played right after Memorial Day weekend.

DUBLIN, Ohio — Jack Nicklaus wanted to do right by the PGA Tour. So he went along with the plan to move his Memorial Tournament to the week before the U.S. Open, even if it was something he would prefer not to do.

Now in its 49th year, Nicklaus’s tournament that was first played at Muirfield Village Golf Club in 1976 has traditionally—but not always—been played two weeks prior to the U.S. Open and in the week following Memorial Day.

The PGA Tour sought to move it as part of its signature event series. And Nicklaus said it’s a matter that will continue to be discussed.

“We would prefer the other week,” Nicklaus said Tuesday during a news conference in advance of the tournament. “However, we are here this week because the Tour asked us to help them out. They said they had a thing they wanted to do and that the players had asked for and that would we help it out, and we said yes, that we would do that this week.

“But we said we would review it after this tournament and we'll figure out how we're going to settle the schedule after that, and I said that discussion is under way.”

The Memorial is one of eight $20 million signature events the Tour put in place for this year with a qualification process that sees preceding events as one of the ways to get a spot in the smaller fields.

The Charles Schwab Challenge and the RBC Canadian Open kept a separate FedEx Cup points list for the top five players not otherwise qualified to earn their way into the Memorial field.

The idea, also, was to not leave regular events “stranded” between two signature events or a major championship. The Travelers Championship, the last signature event of the year, will follow the U.S. Open.

Nicklaus, 84, said that presented a problem for him personally. The Golden Bear, who won 18 major championships among his 73 PGA Tour titles, always preferred an off week prior to a major.

“Let's put it this way. When I played, I would rarely play a week before any major championship,” Nicklaus said. “So I'm asked to be part of putting on a golf tournament in a week that I would never play. That, to me, is the essential part from my standpoint.”

Although the Memorial name is used to signify honoring a player in the game—this year it is LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famer Juli Inkster—Nicklaus said that date has often been tied to the holiday as well.

“Yesterday, was normally a very big day gallery-wise for us because it was Memorial Day, and we had maybe a thousand people here yesterday,” he said. “From the sponsor's standpoint, I think that they get into board meetings and kids' graduations and so forth, so that's maybe not as advantageous.

“But that won't make any difference. We're going to have a good tournament this week either way, in spite of all the different things. And as I say, we did that as a favor and the Tour asked us to do that, and we said yes. So we've always been a supporter of the Tour. We want to try to continue to support what is best for the Tour, but we also want to support what's best for the Memorial Tournament. So that is to be determined.”

The Tour has said it will take this summer to review the signature events. Scheduling will be studied as well as field sizes. The original intent was to have fields capped at 80 players, which has happened only at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Most have been in the low 70s and could be filled out.

How a change to accommodate proper qualification as well as not leaving tournaments alone on the calendar would also have to be considered.

Regulators Take on the Giants of A.I.

The Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department are set to proceed with investigations into the dominance of Nvidia, Microsoft and OpenAI.

By Andrew Ross Sorkin ,  Ravi Mattu ,  Bernhard Warner ,  Sarah Kessler ,  Michael J. de la Merced ,  Lauren Hirsch and Ephrat Livni

Jonathan Kanter, the Justice Department’s antitrust chief, and Lina Khan, the chair of the Federal Trade Commission, in dark suits, standing with their right hands raised.

An A.I. antitrust fight is coming

Nvidia has joined the $3 trillion valuation club as a blistering A.I. rally has turned it into the world’s second-most valuable company behind Microsoft.

Both companies are at the center of the artificial intelligence boom that has lifted the wider S&P 500 — and both have attracted regulatory scrutiny of the sector’s biggest players.

The F.T.C. and Justice Department are set to proceed with antitrust investigations against the duo, and OpenAI, writes The Times’s David McCabe. The F.T.C. is already looking into Microsoft, according to The Wall Street Journal, over how the company structured a deal with the start-up Inflection AI to avoid scrutiny.

In March, Microsoft hired almost all of the start-up’s staff and agreed to pay around $650 million to license its technology.

The deal added to Microsoft’s leading A.I. position. The company has stakes in OpenAI, the French start-up Mistral and Abu Dhabi’s G42 , and it has also partnered with those businesses to develop and deploy A.I.

(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems.)

The regulators are splitting their approach. The Justice Department will look at whether Nvidia has violated antitrust laws and the F.T.C. will focus on OpenAI and Microsoft.

Jonathan Kanter , the Justice Department’s antitrust chief, told The Financial Times that he was looking into “monopoly choke points” and competition. Kanter also promised that regulators would look at “acqui-hires.” He didn’t name Microsoft’s deal with Inflection, but Brad Smith, the tech giant’s president, defended the transaction. “We didn’t want to own the company,” he told The FT. “We wanted to hire some of the people who worked at the company.”

The Biden administration has pushed to rein in Big Tech. U.S. regulatory action trails the likes of the European Union, which passed one of the world’s first comprehensive A.I. rules last year.

But the F.T.C. and Justice Department are intensifying their inquiries: The agency is already investigating OpenAI’s data collection practices and reviewing the company’s partnerships with A.I. start-ups.

Geopolitics could add complications. The Biden administration engineered Microsoft’s deal with G42 to box out China. As Washington battles with Beijing over controlling A.I., it will try to keep the Big Tech on its side even as it tightens the screws.

Boeing’s Starliner finally blasts off. The company’s spacecraft is expected to take two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station on Thursday after a series of costly delays. NASA hailed the launch as a milestone in the agency’s effort to rely on the private sector for human spaceflight; it’s also a rare bit of good news for Boeing amid scrutiny of its airplanes.

Elon Musk’s xAI plans to build a supercomputer facility in Memphis. The artificial intelligence start-up will construct a building that local officials described as the “largest multibillion-dollar investment” in the city’s history. It’s part of xAI’s efforts to catch up with more established rivals in amassing the computing power needed for A.I. innovations, as well as cities’ efforts to lure tech industry dollars.

EBay will stop accepting American Express cards over a fee dispute. The online retailer said it was taking the step , which will become effective Aug. 17, because of the “unacceptably high fees” the financial giant charges for card transactions. Despite the high-profile battle over interchange fees, analysts said that American Express was unlikely to reduce them.

The unexpected opposition to halting congestion pricing

The surprise decision by Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York to slam the brakes on a congestion plan for Manhattan, the first of its kind in the U.S., has set off more debate over one of the most contentious urban policies in recent memory.

But it has also split New York’s business community along unexpected lines, as industries argued for and against the move.

Hochul’s announcement was an 11th-hour U-turn, after speaking publicly in favor of the policy as recently as two weeks ago . It would have charged some drivers $15 a day (so long as they use the E-Z Pass tolling system) for entering Manhattan south of 60th Street.

The policy had potentially big economic consequences:

Proponents argued that it would reduce gridlock and pollution in Manhattan, while raising an estimated $1 billion a year for the city’s buses and subways.

Opponents said it would place an undue burden on lower-income city residents, commuters, commercial truckers and local businesses. This camp also included New Jersey Democrats — Gov. Phil Murphy sued to block its implementation — and lawmakers in suburban areas.

For context: Other cities, including London, have already put in place similar measures , with varying degrees of success.

Various business interests had opposed the plan. Hochul had cited a potential chilling effect on commuters coming into the office , with vacancy rates hovering around 20 percent at times. And in March, the chair of the Broadway Association — whose members include Midtown theaters and hotels — fretted that the plan might sharply reduce tourism .

Meanwhile, The Lever reports that Hochul had received thousands of dollars in donations from lobbyists for auto dealers , who have been worried about a potential drop in car sales.

An equally broad group criticized Hochul’s reversal. Among them was the Partnership for New York City , one of the city’s most influential corporate associations: “The toll revenues would amount to only $1 billion a year, which is far less than the $20+ billion cost of lost productivity, overtime and fuel expenses, environmental and health costs that are the result of excess traffic congestion,” said Kathryn Wylde, its president.

The Real Estate Board of New York, a trade group for commercial real estate firms, said that any delay be only temporary . And the president of the New York Building Congress, which represents the construction industry, said, “We are living in a bad episode of ‘The Twilight Zone.’”

At the same time, congestion pricing had already drawn support from Uber — despite the ride-hailing service’s customers being required to pay an extra fee under versions of the initiative.

The S.E.C. hits a roadblock

The S.E.C.’s efforts to clamp down on the booming $27 trillion private funds industry and its oversight of Wall Street are looking shakier this morning.

The agency suffered a significant blow after a federal appellate court on Wednesday struck down disclosure rules that fund giants, including groups connected to Apollo Global Management and Blackstone, have been fighting for months.

The setback puts the S.E.C. in a tough position. It is considering an appeal, setting up a potential Supreme Court showdown. But a loss there could further diminish the agency’s authority as legal challenges mount from pro-business groups accusing the S.E.C. of regulatory overreach.

A recap: Last year, the agency passed mandates that hedge funds, private equity funds and venture capital firms must provide investors more information about fees and expenses. At the time, Gary Gensler , the S.E.C. chair, said the new rules would offer greater protection to “all investors — big or small, institutional or retail, sophisticated or not.”

State pension funds were big supporters of the proposed rules . But Wall Street pushed back hard, calling the rules onerous. The S.E.C. itself estimated that the rules would introduce $5.4 billion worth of compliance costs.

The decision could hamper the S.E.C. The agency is considering other rules related to how private funds work with investors, Jason Brown, an asset management partner at the law firm Ropes & Gray, told DealBook. “I think this case may embolden the industry to challenge those rules in court if they don’t come out the right way,” he said.

What’s next? One possibility is appealing to the Supreme Court. Its conservative majority has recently appeared more open to arguments seeking to curtail the power of regulatory agencies .

That said, regulators scored a big win last month when the court rejected a challenge to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s funding .

The PGA Tour and the Saudis, one year later

Thursday is the first anniversary of the deal that shook the professional golf world: that the PGA Tour and the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, which backs the upstart LIV Golf, would seek to combine forces.

The tie-up may appear to be moving at a snail’s pace, but talks are continuing, and the two sides are set to meet in New York tomorrow, two people familiar with the plans told DealBook’s Lauren Hirsch. (The two people were granted anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the matter.)

Who will be involved? Members of the PGA Tour’s transaction committee, which includes Tiger Woods and Fenway Sports Group’s John Henry. Rory McIlroy , who is also on the committee, will be playing in a tournament and joining remotely, one of the people said.

The fact that it’s an in-person meeting is significant. It shows that there’s some real intention to get a deal done. But sources on both sides caution that a breakthrough is far from imminent.

The two sides recently exchanged term sheets, DealBook has reported . It’s a sign that the deal — which sees the Saudis and a new group of U.S. investors each kicking in $1.5 billion — is on more than life support even if progress seems slow.

A year on, the PGA Tour looks very different. It raised at least $1.5 billion from U.S. investors, including the hedge fund mogul Steven Cohen, and created a separate unit for its commercial operations. It also appointed a new board of directors, including Woods, the Home Depot co-founder Arthur Blank and Fenway’s Sam Kennedy, to oversee the commercial business.

That said, two directors from the original PGA Tour’s board have resigned: Mark Flaherty, a Goldman board member, and Jimmy Dunne, the Piper Sandler vice chairman who helped spearhead the deal.

Are more moves on the way? One big question for Wall Street insiders: whether Ed Herlihy, the Wachtell partner who worked closely with Dunne on the original deal, will step down. (He declined to comment.)

Another question: given that high turnover, who exactly has the final say on getting a deal done?
