It takes about 40 minutes by car and around two hours by foot trekking.  The roads get blocked by a convoy of cars during the peak season. On your return, after taking a little downhill, you will see two temples on either side of the road. One of Lord Shiba and another one is Durga Mata Devi. Tiger Hill is a place of wonder and natural beauty. It is located in West Bengal, India. At sunrise, the entire Himalayan range floats before the eyes along with the colorful play of the sun on the Kanchenjunga peak.

If the sky is clear, people flock here, resulting in traffic jams leading up to Tiger Hill. You have to get out of the car and run uphill in order not to miss the sunrise, so come here before the potatoes bloom and leave the hotel by 3:30 in the morning.

Then you don’t have to get into the jam anymore after passing Ghum Station and going up along Senchal Road, Tiger Hill is a little bit higher. It takes 40 minutes by car from Darjeeling city.

Tiger Hill remains open for tourists every day from early dawn until sunset. The entree fee of Tiger Hill is around 50 rupees per person. Apart from the entry fee, the ticket price of the observatory tower varies depending upon the level. The ticket price for the ground level is 20 rupees as of now. For the first floor, the price increases to rupees 30. The top floor is the most costly one (40 rupees) as it has a comfortable seating facility with a top-notch view. However, on the other two floors, there are also chairs arranged for seating. In this observatory, there is also a toilet facility. However, the toilet is not properly maintained and mostly remains unusable.

How to Reach Tiger Hill in Darjeeling

By Air: At a distance of around 90 km, Bagdogra Aiport is the nearest one. This particular airport is one of the busiest ones which is connected with major nearby cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati.

By Train: New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) is the most popular railway station nearby at an approximate distance of around 88 km. Most major railway cities such as Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata, and more have railway connections with NJP.

By Road: Darjeeling can be easily visited from Siliguri, its major nearby city. From the main town of Darjeeling, Tiger Hill is approximately 11 km distance away. By a rented car, it takes around 40 minutes to reach Tiger Hill from the town.

At sunrise, the peaks of Kanchenjunga are illuminated before the sun is seen at lower elevations. From Tiger Hill, Mount Everest (8848 m) is just visible. Kanchenjunga (8598 m) looks higher than Mt. Everest, owing to the curvature of the Earth, as it is several miles closer than Everest. The distance in a straight line from Tiger Hill to Everest is 107 miles (172 km). On a clear day, Kurseong is visible to the south and in the distance, along with Teesta River, Mahananda River, Balason River and Mechi River meandering down to the south. Chumal Rhi mountain of Tibet, 84 miles (135 km) away, is visible over the Chola Range Senchel Wildlife Sanctuary is close to Tiger Hill.

Bagdogra, 90 K.M. (via NH 110) away from Darjeeling, is the nearest airport connected by flights from major cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati.

Apart from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station (88 K.M. from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station) the two closest railway stations are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri. These railway stations have direct railway connections with Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, and other major cities of India.

The major access to Darjeeling by road is via Siliguri, 77 K.M. (via NH 55), which is connected to all the major cities of India. Bus service is available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand, Siliguri. Darjeeling to Tiger Hill is approx 45 minutes. You need to start for early in the morning at 4am. During winter starting at 4.30am will be ok. Hundreds of vehicle with thousands of tourists leave for the place everyday. As the sun rises early in summer you need to starts at approx 3.30am. Moreover the traffic will be almost doubled as summer is the peak tourist season.

The view mostly depends on the weather condition. So October to December will be best time to visit Tiger Hill. Just after the monsoon autumn offers a clear weather & best visibility. January & February mostly remains foggy & has the lesser chance. Mar to May will be comparatively a better season as visibility will be better. It’s better to avoid monsoon i.e. July to mid September as the weather remains cloudy during this period. Getting a clear view of Kanchendzonga is very rare in Monsoon.

Visiting Peterhof

If you only have time to make one trip out of St. Petersburg during your stay, then it should be Peterhof, the greatest of all the city's suburban estates. While the best time to visit Peterhof is of course the summer season, when all the varied buildings in the park are open to visitors and the famous fountains are in operation (early May to early October), this is also the time when Peterhof is most crowded, with long queues for some of the major attractions, and for transport back to the city.

The station is about 20 minutes' walk from the gates to the Upper Garden across Proletarskiy Park, or there are several buses. Alternatively, marshrutka minibuses run from in front of Baltiskiy Station directly to the park gates in Peterhof. There are also marshrutkas from Avtovo (K-424) and from Leninskiy Prospekt (K-242) Metro Stations. The drive from the city should take a little under one hour.

Probably the best way to visit Peterhof is to take a hydrofoil across the Gulf of Finland to the jetty at the end of the Marine Canal. Two companies run regular hydrofoil services through the summer months from the Hermitage jetty, and Admiralteyskaya Naberezhnaya.

Lower Park with Fountains

As well as Peterhof's celebrated fountains, the Lower Park contains the numerous elegant buildings constructed for Peter the Great along the shores of the Gulf of Finland.

Aviaries of the Lower Park (Voliere)

It should be no surprise that even the birds at Peterhof live in unusual luxury, and these two pavilions - one housing Russian songbirds, one parrots - have beautifully painted ceilings.

Dating from the Petrine era, this small pavilion was designed to allow the Tsar to dine in privacy with his guests, ensured with an unusual system of pulleys.

This pretty baroque mansion was designed as a retreat for Peter the Great, and is now used to display many of his personal effects.

The Benois family, emigres to St. Petersburg after the French Revolution, produced generation after generation of artists, architects and designers, celebrated in this museum.
