The Time Is Right to Buy A Campground

Increasing focus on the outdoors. More and more Americans have started spending more time in their yards and outdoor space and found they really liked it. The RV park and campground industry has benefitted and will continue to benefit from this new appreciation for the outdoors and traveling around the country. The National Focus on Experiences. There is a movement in America towards spending less on buying “things” and instead focus on buying “experiences”. RV parks offer the ability to be much more active with friends and family, including sports, adventure, swimming, games, and outdoor dining. New views on travel. Flying and staying in hotels has become less appealing and instead many consumers are preferring driving and staying in their own RV. This is unlikely to change going forward, as people find the joys of privacy and control of their surroundings an important part of their quality of life.

RV Park / Campground Articles & News

What our users say.

When we decided to sell our RV/Cabin Resort we interviewed all the area Realtors and none of them really knew how to market our property because they all sell mostly residential real estate. Most told us it would take several years and they weren’t really sure on a valuation because it is unique. I found RVParkStore and placed an ad, their fees were much less than any realtor. We got several inquiries and they all seemed serious about buying this type of business property. We had several travel to see our place and a few were very interested. We got a signed sales contract for full price in 9 months with no realtor involved. Thank you RVParkStore! Dan
I would like to commend and recommend RV Park Store for anyone desiring to sell their RV Park. IT WORKED for us… we sold to a buyer that found us on RV Park Store. We used the ‘blast’ service and it brought us a buyer within 30 days. Many Thanks…a great service. RC for Lake Waco Marina RV Park, Inc.
RVParkStore.com was the instrument that generated the right buyer and now owner of the RV Lot. Thank you very much for your service. Ron
I’ve been using RVParkStore for a few years with much success. I’ve sold one property, rented another and have gotten several bites on my current listing. I would say this site has given me the biggest return for the money out of all the other sites I’ve used. And many thanks to the Staff that has helped me with what I needed Paula D

Big 4 Holiday Park Cape Jervis 9351 Main South Road, Cape Jervis

A caravan park located at the gateway to one of the world’s top tourist destinations provides a comfortable lifestyle with plenty of opportunity for further expansion.

Former station owners Anthony and Sally Miles purchased the Big 4 Holiday Park at 9351 Main South Road, Cape Jervis in 2010, when it had just six camp sites and six motel-style rooms.

Having transformed it into unique farm stay accommodation, with almost 100 powered and unpowered camp sites, six self-contained cottages and more than 20 rooms, the couple are now looking to retire and keen for someone else to take over the picturesque 47-hectare property.

The property features onsite restaurant facilities and liquor licence.

Supplied Real Estate Big 4 Holiday Park Cape Jervis 9351 Main South Road, Cape Jervis

The Holiday Park is contained on its own title, and features original stone buildings, dating back to the 1830’s.

An onsite restaurant, with a liquor licence, was shut down during the pandemic but Mr Miles says it could be reopened almost immediately.

There’s also a stone barn function centre with a commercial kitchen.

“We’ve got to the point where we don’t want to work as hard as we used to but there’s still heaps of opportunity to really punch things up,’’ Mr Miles says.

“We would really like to see that (restaurant) come back. Apart from the people that were staying with us, we always had a lot of the locals use it for special events – lots of birthdays and things like that.

“There’s plenty of land and plenty of potential to keep on expanding things. This place is really only limited by your imagination.’’

Cape Jervis is best known as the departure point for ferry services to Kangaroo Island, named by Lonely Planet as the second must-visit region in the world.

But the country town, a little more than 100km from Adelaide, is also a tourist attraction in its own right, boasting some of the best views of the dramatic Fleurieu Peninsula coastline.

There are 43 powered camping sites and 50 unpowered camping sites.

The property also features a mixture of holiday accommodation, including six self-contained cottages, 11 rooms with ensuites, seven twin-share rooms and five queen rooms.

The holiday park is for sale as a turn-key asset.

Mr Miles estimates 60 per cent of the park’s visitors are travelling to and from Kangaroo Island but there’s also a steady stream of others, including keen fishers.

Daily feeding sessions of the park’s cattle, sheep, horses, emus, kangaroos and guinea fowl are popular among tourists – although Mr Miles says the emus have caused upsets in the past.

“We used to let them roam the park but they had a habit of reaching inside the caravans and picking up the keys, which annoyed some people,’’ Mr Miles says.

“Now they’re kept (in fully-fenced paddocks) with the other animals.’’

The property is set over two titles, which can be sold separately or together.

The holiday park, with original stone buildings dating back to the 1830s, is contained on one title, while a stand-alone title has access and power.

The sale is being handled by Colliers, with expressions of interest closing on Thursday, August 22.

Freehold suburban Melbourne caravan park for sale located only 20 minutes from the Melbourne city centre. Crystal Brook Tourist Park for sale by exclusive agents Andrew Jackson HTL Property and Kevin Connolly CRE Brokers.

tourist caravan park for sale

A very rare freehold suburban caravan park located only 20 minutes from the Melbourne city centre is on the market through exclusive agents HTL Property and CRE Brokers. Located within a 20 minute drive to the Melbourne CBD, and situated on an expansive 3.89 hectares; Crystal Brook Tourist Park holds immense value in the asset’s land component alone. Crystal Brook Tourist Park is unique in that it is one of only a handful caravan parks within Metropolitan Melbourne, therefore enjoys close proximity to all that is on offer from this world class city. The Property is located on the border of Doncaster East and Warrandyte; approximately 25kms northeast of the Melbourne CBD, in a highly desirable residential area with ample local amenities. According to realestate.com.au..Warrandyte saw a 29.4% growth in median house prices in the year to December 2021; with Doncaster East also recording substantial growth of 18.4%. Both suburbs now have a median house value close to $1.5 million, and Metropolitan Melbourne house prices have crossed the million dollar mark as well. Property experts across the board forecast that there is still considerable growth in housing prices throughout 2022 and into 2023. “Despite extended lockdowns, neither the economic nor health related uncertainty has dampened the strength of property market. In fact, we have seen the opposite with housing prices sky-rocketing all around Australia, due largely to historically low interest rates. As housing affordability worsens and the baby boomer generation, our largest age cohort, enters retirement and looks to downsize; we expect mixed-use caravan park interest to soar in respect of both interest and in value” remarked Kevin Connolly of CRE Brokers. "Regardless of the underlying land value here, caravan sales have never been stronger than in recent years; and we find it refreshing to have a true caravan park still operating within proximity to Melbourne city” added Connolly. Although currently operated as a 100% tourist park, Crystal Brook did previously comprise a permanent residential component with resident-owned and occupied mobile homes; and this could potentially be reinstated in order to capitalise on the booming housing market in order to establish a more passive income profile via recurring site fees. Alternatively, an incoming purchaser could maintain the pure tourist offering following the substantial surge in domestic tourism due to increased household savings, returning economic and health confidence; and maybe most pertinently, the pent-up desire for travel as restrictions lift. Crystal Brook Tourist Park comprises 89 sites in total, including a separate 2 bedroom residence for long-term rentals,reception/office and the manager’s 3 bedroom residence. The park features well-maintained facilities including two amenity buildings with showers and toilets, a heated swimming pool, jumping pillow, children’s playground, BBQ area, communal camp kitchen and games room, chess court, boules court and a commercial laundry building. There are a range of value-add opportunities including refurbishment, reintroduction of permanent resident-owned homes and remixing the accommodation to higher yielding offerings. The current owner has undertaken concept plans for potential glamping sites and there is ample surplus land to further expand the accommodation offering and facilities (STCA). Outgoing long time owner Robert Bressan said it was a regrettable sale, but it felt like the right time. "We've been living in Sydney and these last few years have thrown many challenges at us with border closures and the like as we managed the park remotely from interstate. We pivoted and did the best we could under the circumstances like everyone else. And it wasn't all bad news, we welcomed our first grandchild into the family during this time and my two sons returned home to Australia after long stints living overseas. So I guess these events have made me look forward to the transition towards retirement and to spend more time with family" advised Bressan. “I look forward to watching the next owner take this wonderful asset to the next level and really enjoy the boon to come from the renewed popularity regarding caravan style holidays; especially now that traveling is back top of mind” Bressan concluded. Combining a traditional tourist park with a RLLC, into what is termed a mixed-use caravan park is the best of both worlds. A stable income stream is provided via the RLLC with the tourist park component providing additional seasonal income, at much higher rates. As a result, this previously niche asset class is rapidly gaining traction as investor awareness increases regarding the favourable investment fundamentals underpinned by large land holdings. “These assets have generated strong returns, even in softer economic times due to their resilient income streams and the ongoing demand for affordable accommodation. The broad market demand for these assets is simply outweighing the available supply. Add to this a domestic tourism resurgence and the corporatisation of the sector, we are witnessing unheralded yield compression for the asset class and we don’t expect prevailing conditions to abate any time soon” commented HTL Property’s Andrew Jackson. “Crystal Brook Tourist Park will appeal to a broad pool of buyers who will appreciate the underlying land value in the sizable holding; combined with potential permanent home sale profits and recurring income, as well as value- add opportunities. All of which will underpin the future value of this freehold going concern asset,” concluded Connolly. The exclusive agents hold price expectations of around $9 million to $10 million. Expressions of Interest close 23 March 2022. 15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

1. Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

2. catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, 3. shop at the luxurious gum, 4. make your way into lenin's mausoleum, 5. spend an hour (or three) at red square, 6. discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, 7. ride the stunning moscow metro, 8. explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, 9. spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, 10. walk up and down arbat street, 11. stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, 12. wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.

Testimonials

We have owned a holiday home on Parc Cynhinfa for over 20 years. It is a small, family run park, which is very well maintained, quiet and relaxing, it is a credit to the owners. Their pride in owning the park, which is also their home, is reflected in all they do. As we are Midlands based, one of the main benefits is that we can leave our home and be at our holiday home in 1.5 hours. The park is nestled in the beautiful hills of Mid Wales and from here, if required, you can explore all that the heart of Wales has to offer. A further benefit is that the coast is just an hours drive away. We would strongly recommend Parc Cynhinfa to anyone. "Life at Parc Cynhinfa, is about being relaxed and being able to enjoy life as it should be".

Tony & Julie Brown - 25/2/16

Thank you for a wonderful 7 days. Your cottage far exceeded our expectations. The cottage is superb. My email is really to give feedback on my fishing as this was really a fishing holiday, thanks to Vicky. I concentrated on your larger pool. However I did have a session on your newer pool. In less tahn two hours I caught 5 carp, all in superb condition. On your larger pool I caught rudd, roach, bream, tench and carp. Again, all fish in superb condition. Once again. Thank you.

In Georgia’s Depressed Heartland, Pining for the Soviet Past

While most Georgians support closer integration with Western Europe, many people in industrial areas that collapsed along with Communism in the 1990s express nostalgia for the old Soviet prosperity.

Two men, one of whom is pointing, with a dog on a hillside.

By Ivan Nechepurenko

Ivan Nechepurenko traveled to towns and villages in Georgia’s industrial and mining heartland, including Kazreti and Chiatura, for this article.

The town of Kazreti, nestled in the picturesque mountains of Georgia near the border with Armenia, once boasted a cinema, a bank, musical fountains, two schools and a kindergarten. Dance ensembles and volleyball teams from across the Soviet Union would come to perform and compete, and central heating and electricity were free.

“It was a true Communist oasis,” said Davit Jakeli, 52, who worked as a carpenter in a state-run vocational school in the town of about 5,500 people, about 50 miles southwest of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.

But after the Soviet Union’s collapse in the 1990s, he said, everything also came crashing down in Kazreti. No longer supported by the Soviet command economy, the unprofitable local gold and copper mines and an enrichment plant were shut, putting hundreds of people out of work. They reopened years later on a much smaller scale under private ownership.

Now there is just one school in the town and the cinema and bank have closed. The fountains, which once adorned a central square, are long gone. Stray dogs roam potholed roads flanked by decrepit apartments.

“It is a huge injustice what happened here,” said Mr. Jakeli, who now resells scrap metal from the courtyard of his home.

Over the past three decades, Georgia, a country of 3.6 million, has been one of the most pro-West of the former Soviet states. Polls still show that more than 60 percent of its residents favor joining the European Union and NATO.

But tensions remain between those who see Georgia’s future in the West, and those, particularly in poorer parts of the country, who pine for a Soviet past that delivered them stable incomes and basic social infrastructure.

Earlier this year, thousands of activists in Tbilisi protested against a law pushed by the government to curb the influence of Western-funded organizations. Critics say the law, which passed in May, will push Georgia into Russia’s arms, and the European Union says it could complicate Georgia’s hopes of joining the bloc.

Those tensions have been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. While the Russian invasion galvanized the pro-Western opposition, which saw the government’s neutral stance toward sanctions as proof that it sided with Moscow, other Georgians have been wary about provoking Russia, fearing that what happened in Ukraine might happen in Georgia, too.

In Kazreti and other Georgian towns across an industrial heartland that has been battered by high unemployment over the past few decades, the protesters’ demands — and their fears of Russia — ring hollow.

While many urban residents see the Soviet period as a time of occupation and political repression, for many people in rural areas it was a time of plenty, when they had jobs and prosperity. Outside the capital, unemployment is rife, and drug and alcohol abuse is rampant.

Datuna Kaplanishvili, 62, who worked at the ore processing plant in Kazreti when it was state-owned, said the Soviet era represented the best days of his life.

“They don’t see anything clearly,” Mr. Kaplanishvili, 62, said about the young people who protested in Tbilisi. “There won’t be anything here without Russia.”

In half-empty villages and towns devastated by decades of neglect, the prospect of a distant European future looks like a mirage to many.

One such town, Chiatura, was once considered a Soviet workers’ paradise, known for the cable cars that carried workers to manganese mines and residential areas in the surrounding mountains.

The population of Chiatura is less than half what it was before the Soviet collapse, with the mines requiring fewer people to operate them and the town’s social infrastructure deteriorating.

Now, the town center is a shell of what used to be, with shuttered businesses and entertainment venues, and cable cars taking only a few residents to half-empty Soviet-era apartment buildings, many of them with smashed windows.

A daily overnight sleeper train used to connect Chiatura with Tbilisi, and the town itself was served by two trolley bus routes that ran along the banks of its river. Today, the train station stands empty and in ruins. The Tbilisi route was canceled along with all the others; the trolley buses were cut up for scrap metal.

“We used to live well under Communism,” said Mamia Gabeskeliani, 68, who lives in Zodi, a mining village outside Chiatura. “Recently things have turned for the worse.”

Mr. Gabeskeliani said he did not trust either the protesters or the government. “There is one truth and one hundred lies and it is very difficult to differentiate,” he said. “Everyone is saying they are right and pushing their agenda.”

Heightening the despair in places like Chiatura and surrounding villages is the obvious environmental degradation, with open pit mines that have been carved out of forests and giant heaps of residual mining waste.

Some of that devastation dates from Soviet times, but local residents say that successive governments since then have done nothing about the problem, nor have they reined in what they say are rapacious mining companies.

For many people in the old industrial heartland, there is little difference between the pro-Western government that ruled Georgia in the 2000s and the current one, which takes a more neutral stance toward Russia.

The promise of the prosperity that would come with independence has never been realized, and things like newly open borders have merely allowed people to leave the country to work in low paying jobs abroad, hollowing out their towns.

Still, some people from Georgia’s crumbling industrial heartland feel differently.

Kote Abdushelishvili, 35, a filmmaker who divides his time between Tbilisi and Zodi, where he is from, has been trying to convince people in the area that Georgia must become part of the West.

“People became skeptical of the West,” said Mr. Abdushelishvili. “After 30 years we are poor and it is getting worse,” he added.

There is a big disconnect, he said, between the view of Europe by young people in Tbilisi, with its elegant cafes, modern universities and techno clubs, and those in Zodi and hundreds of other towns and villages across Georgia.

For young people in the old industrial heartland, the West is mainly a place where their relatives are forced to go to as migrant workers, he said.

While he is sympathetic to the protesters in Tbilisi and their drive to forge closer ties to the West, Mr. Abdushelishvili said it was hard to convince people he had grown up with why that was important.

“Most people here are conservative,” he said. “People tell them: ‘No Russia, go West,’ but it means nothing to them.”

Valeri Chitadze, who wants to develop his village of Tsirkvali into a tourist destination through organic farming and hiking excursions in nearby mountains, said life is tough for those who have not found a way out of the region.

There are no jobs other than “horrible” ones at manganese mines, no outlets for having fun, like cafes or cinemas, and little in the way of basic service providers like dentists, Mr. Chitadze, 36, said.

He remains convinced, nonetheless, that Georgia’s future lies with the West. “The further Georgia goes away from E.U. integration, the further it will go deep into a black hole,” he said.

Sopo Japaridze, an American-educated workers’ rights activist in Tbilisi, said she wanted to see a closer examination of all sides of Georgia’s Soviet past.

Western-funded organizations and media outlets in Tbilisi focused too much on the dark side of the Soviet period, such as repression against artists and the intelligentsia, she said.

But life in Georgia since the collapse of the Soviet Union “has degraded in every way,” with many people falling into alcohol and drug abuse, she said, so the benefits of Soviet rule also need to be considered.

“Life was much richer,” said Ms. Japaridze, a co-founder of a podcast about Soviet Georgia. “Not richer money wise, but there was more diversity; it was not as monotonous as it is now.”

Myriam Grigalashvili contributed reporting from Kazreti and Mariam Kiasashvili from Chiatura.

World News | US-Russian journalist sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison

Alsu kurmasheva was convicted of spreading false information about the russian military.

tourist caravan park for sale

A court has convicted Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist for the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, of spreading false information about the Russian army and sentenced her to 6½ years in prison after a secret trial, court records and officials said Monday.

The conviction in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s central region of Tatarstan, came on Friday, the same day a court in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in prison in a case that the U.S. called politically motivated.

Kurmasheva, a 47-year-old editor for RFE/RL’s Tatar-Bashkir language service, was convicted of “spreading false information” about the military, according to the website of the Supreme Court of Tatarstan. Court spokesperson Natalya Loseva confirmed Kurmasheva’s conviction and revealed the sentence to The Associated Press by phone in the case classified as secret.

Kurmasheva was ordered to serve the sentence in a medium-security penal colony, Loseva said.

“My daughters and I know Alsu has done nothing wrong. And the world knows it too. We need her home,” Kurmasheva’s husband, Pavel Butorin, said in a post Monday on X.

He had said last year the charges stemmed from a book the Tatar-Bashkir service released in 2022 called “No to War” — “a collection of short stories of Russians who don’t want their country to be at war with Ukraine.” Butorin had said the book doesn’t contain any “false information.”

Asked about the case, RFE/RL President and CEO Stephen Capus denounced the trial and conviction of Kurmasheva as “a mockery of justice.”

“The only just outcome is for Alsu to be immediately released from prison by her Russian captors,” he said in a statement to the AP.

“It’s beyond time for this American citizen, our dear colleague, to be reunited with her loving family,” Capus said.

Kurmasheva, who holds U.S. and Russian citizenship and lives in Prague with her husband and two daughters, was taken into custody in October 2023 and charged with failing to register as a foreign agent while collecting information about the Russian military.

Later, she was also charged with spreading “false information” about the Russian military under legislation that effectively criminalized any public expression about the war in Ukraine that deviates from the Kremlin line. The legislation was adopted in March 2022, just days after the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine, and has since been used to target Kremlin critics at home and abroad, implicating scores of people in criminal cases and sending dozens to prison.

Kurmasheva was initially stopped in June 2023 at Kazan International Airport after traveling to Russia the previous month to visit her ailing elderly mother. Officials confiscated her U.S. and Russian passports and fined her for failing to register her U.S. passport. She was waiting for her passports to be returned when she was arrested on new charges in October that year. RFE/RL has repeatedly called for her release.

RFE/RL was told by Russian authorities in 2017 to register as a foreign agent, but it has challenged Moscow’s use of foreign agent laws in the European Court of Human Rights. The organization has been fined millions of dollars by Russia.

The organization Reporters Without Borders said Kurmasheva’s conviction “illustrates the unprecedented level of despotism permeating a Russian judiciary that takes orders from the Kremlin.”

It called for Kurmasheva’s immediate release and said the purpose of the sentence was to dissuade journalists from traveling to Russia and put pressure on the United States.

In February, RFE/RL was outlawed in Russia as an undesirable organization. Its Tatar-Bashkir service is the only major international news provider reporting in those languages, in addition to Russian, to audiences in the multiethnic, Muslim-majority Volga-Urals region.

The swift and secretive trials of Kurmasheva and Gershkovich in Russia’s highly politicized legal system raised hopes for a possible prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington. Russia has previously signaled a possible exchange involving Gershkovich, but said a verdict in his case must come first.

Arrests of Americans are increasingly common in Russia, with nine U.S. citizens known to be detained there as tensions between the two countries have escalated over fighting in Ukraine.

Gershkovich, 32, was arrested March 29, 2023, while on a reporting trip to the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg. Authorities claimed, without offering any evidence, that he was gathering secret information for the U.S.

He has been behind bars since his arrest, time that will be counted as part of his sentence. Most of that was in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo Prison — a czarist-era lockup used during Josef Stalin’s purges, when executions were carried out in its basement. He was transferred to Yekaterinburg for the trial.

Gershkovich was the first U.S. journalist arrested on espionage charges since Nicholas Daniloff in 1986, at the height of the Cold War. Foreign journalists in Russia were shocked by Gershkovich’s arrest, even though the country has enacted increasingly repressive laws on freedom of speech after sending troops into Ukraine.

U.S. President Joe Biden said after his conviction that Gershkovich “was targeted by the Russian government because he is a journalist and an American.”

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield accused Moscow last week of treating “human beings as bargaining chips.” She singled out Gershkovich and ex-Marine Paul Whelan, 53, a corporate security director from Michigan, who is serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted on spying charges that he and the U.S. denied.

Sam Greene of the Center for European Policy Analysis said the conviction and sentencing of Kurmasheva and Gershkovich on the same day “suggests — but does not prove — that the Kremlin is preparing a deal. More likely, they are preparing to offer up a negotiating table that Washington will find it difficult to ignore.”

In a series of posts on X, Greene stressed that “the availability of a negotiating table shouldn’t be confused with the availability of a deal,” and that Moscow has no interest in releasing its prisoners — but it is likely to “seek the highest possible price for its bargaining chips, and to seek additional concessions along the way just to keep the talks going.”

Washington “should obviously do what it can” to get Gershkovich, Kurmasheva, imprisoned opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza and other political prisoners out, he said, adding: “But if Moscow demands what it really wants — the abandonment of Ukraine — what then?”

Furious fans of Sabrina Carpenter have taken to social media to complain after many were unable to get tickets to her upcoming shows - with some claiming the process was worse than Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.

The US singer - whose popularity has soared in recent months following the release of her hits Espresso and Please, Please, Please - is bringing her Short N' Sweet tour to the UK in March 2025.

Some had the chance to bag tickets to one of just four shows scheduled in the UK through this morning's Ticketmaster presale.

But fans appeared to encounter issues, with some users saying they were "booted out", while others reported being unable to buy tickets once they'd reached the front of the queue despite them being seemingly available.

Several people said it was easier and cheaper to get tickets to Taylor Swift's billion-dollar Eras Tour, which attracted huge audience demand and led to her adding an extra run of London dates.

Others had complaints about the cost, with one person branding the £234 price for "nosebleed" seats "appalling" and another describing it as "disgusting".

Sky News has contacted Ticketmaster for comment.

Hidden in overall grocery inflation - which stands at 1.6 per cent right now - are the huge rises in the price of some specific products we've seen over the past two years.

One of those is ice cream.

Cornetto and Solero are among the popular brands that have soared in price in the past two years.

Which? compared costs at the biggest supermarkets in the two months to July this year with the same period two years ago.

Cornetto's strawberry cones, the biggest riser, has increased by 38%.

The Cornetto Classico jumped by 35%, and Solero Exotics went up 35%.

This table sets out the biggest hikes...

Which? also found some supermarket own-brands did better in blind taste tests than the original brand and were a good option for consumers looking to avoid the biggest hikes.

For instance, Aldi's Gianni's tropico exotic fruit lollies, which cost £1.35 for three, scored 76% in a taste test - higher overall than Solero, which scored 70%.

And Asda, Lidl and Morrison's scored 77% with their strawberry ice cream cone tests, more than Cornetto's 65%.

Every Wednesday we ask Michelin chefs to pick their favourite Cheap Eats where they live and when they cook at home. This week we speak to Tommy Heaney of the restaurant Heaneys Cardiff in the Welsh capital.

Hi Tommy, can you tell us your favourite places in Cardiff where you can get a meal for two for less than £40?

I love what they are doing with the Cardiff Market, we've been crying out for a permanent street food market for years! My go-to is Tokyo Nights , fill your boots with homemade Gyoza and a banging tonkatsu sando.

The Bab Haus is another great spot that can be found in Newport, Barry and now Caerphilly. Leyli is one of the hardest working chefs I know, but more importantly she does a belting taco.

My favourite is Beales Fish and Chips in Porthcawl, it's about 20 minutes from my house.

Nothing is better than when the sun is out, loading up the van with the family and pups, grabbing some fish, chips, a battered sausage or two and curry sauce. Head to the beach, open the doors and just pig out in the back of the van.

What is your go-to cheap eat to cook at home when you have a night in?

A carbonara is my go-to when wanting a quick and easy meal at home.

It's so simple - just five ingredients, which are all household staples. Don't overcomplicate it - all you need is garlic, bacon, spaghetti, parmesan and eggs. My twelve-year-old makes a banging one.

We've spoken to lots of top chefs and bloggers - check out their cheap eats from around the country here...

Nationwide has launched new savings opportunities for customers with the issue of fixed-rate online bond and fixed rate branch bond schemes - and savers only need £1 to open an account.

The new offer means savers who lock their money away - in this case for a year - have a chance to generate hundreds of pounds.

The new rates are:

  • 1 Year Fixed Rate Online Bond - 4.5% AER
  • 1 Year Fixed Rate Branch Bond - 4.5% AER

If you have £5,000 to invest, for example, you would earn £225 in interest a year.

Tom Riley, director of retail products at Nationwide, told Sky News the new one-year bond scheme pay an increased rate and are a "competitive option for those who like to save with a high-street brand they know and trust".

"We offer a range of accounts to suit the different needs of savers," he said.

"Some of our best rates are available for those with a lump sum who can lock their money away for a longer period."

Not sure what AER means? We explained everything you need to know in our Basically... series recently:

Logan Paul and KSI's Prime energy drinks brand is being sued by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee for trademark infringement.

In its lawsuit, the committee alleges the brand used trademarked Olympic phrases and symbols on a special edition of its hydration drink, which features Olympic gold medallist and NBA forward Kevin Durant.

Lawyers say this was "wilful, deliberate, and in bad faith".

The lawsuit comes a year after the brand faced scrutiny over its potentially dangerous levels of caffeine.

More than 150 employees at an Asda store in Cambridgeshire are set to walk out for a second time next week over poor working conditions.

The GMB union confirmed that workers at the superstore in Wisbech will walk out from 3am to 10pm on 2 August.

Staff carried out their first strike in March this year.

It's no secret that many Britons do not save enough to live off in retirement.

The bad news is that the number of people falling into that category is rising.

The annual retirement report published today by Scottish Widows, the life company, reveals that the percentage of people not on track for even a minimum retirement lifestyle has risen from 35% to 38% during the past year.

That equates to an extra 1.2 million people.

The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) defines a minimum retirement lifestyle as covering all the needs of a retiree "with some left over for fun and social occasions" - a holiday in the UK, a meal out once a month and "affordable leisure activities about twice a week".

It estimates the cost of such a lifestyle to be £14,400 for a single retiree or £22,400 for a retired couple.

The PLSA assumes retirees qualify for a full state pension, which rose to £11,500 a year at the start of the current tax year, with retirees currently qualifying for the state pension at the age of 66.

This is due to rise to 67 between May 2026 and the end of 2028.

The report, based on interviews in March and April with 5,072 people saving for retirement and deemed to be representative of the UK population, suggests that most people would like to retire at the age of 62 but just over half, 54%, think they will have to work longer than they would like - on average by seven years.

Just over a quarter of those quizzed, some 27%, said they don't feel they will ever be able to retire.

A middle-class getaway favourite has been found to sell the cheapest beer of Europe's top holiday destinations.

A 330ml bottle of beer costs just £1.74 in Italy's Puglia resorts - the cheapest of 16 destinations analysed in the annual Post Office holiday report, produced with TUI.

Resorts in the Algarve have the second cheapest beer, at an average of £2.04, while five cities charged more than £5 for a bottle (Dubrovnik, Paris, Dublin, Stockholm and Nice).

While Puglia was cheap on beer, it was found to be one of the most expensive destinations overall for a general family holiday.

Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at the Post Office, said: "Even though sterling is stronger now than last July, price inflation across Europe means that families need to allow for increases in meals, drinks and other tourist costs in their spending budget."

Phillip Iveson, commercial director at TUI UK & Ireland, said: "It's clear that it's not just the UK that is impacted by the cost of living."

The first blind Barbie has been released by toy company Mattel as parts of its expanding collection of inclusive dolls.

The blind doll has features that allow accessible play for children with sight loss as well as representing a visually impaired woman.

It comes with a cane with a marshmallow tip, sunglasses, textured, vibrant fabrics and Velcro fastenings on clothing.

Blind broadcaster and disability activist Lucy Edwards was the first blind person in the UK to meet the new Barbie.

She told Sky News the Barbie was "amazing".

Ms Edwards, who lost the sight in her right eye at the age of 11 before losing her remaining sight at 17 due to a rare genetic condition, said when she lost her vision she was "so worried about holding a long white cane".

"I used to hate my cane but now I go on red carpets and I glitz and glamour it and I match it to my outfits and now we've got representation in the most popular doll in the world.

"If Barbie can be blind and be cool and look amazing, anyone can feel confident in their blindness too."

With only days before the Paris Olympics begins, hundreds of thousands of tickets are still up for grabs.

Among them are seats for the women's 200m and men's 100m finals.

Organisers have confirmed that between 500,000 and 600,000 tickets for more than 20 sports were going back on sale before the Games start on Friday.

Seats from around £248 are available for the men's 100m final and tickets for the women's 200m final and going for £164.

Tickets for the closing ceremony are more expensive, with the cheapest tickets selling for £505 and the most expensive priced at £1,347.

Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet has dismissed any suggestion a lack of interest is affecting ticket sales.

The Olympics begins on 26 July and will last for two weeks, concluding on 11 August with the closing ceremony.

There's renewed hope for drivers around fuel pump prices now that the school holidays are in full swing across the UK.

Brent crude oil costs have now fallen by $5 a barrel over the month to date.

Coupled with a stronger pound versus the oil-priced US currency, it should mean that pump costs will ease in the coming weeks if the drop in oil prices is sustained.

It's all being put down to lower-than-expected demand in the global economy.

The FTSE 100 has been a bit topsy-turvy recently.

The gains of yesterday have been put under pressure in early dealing today, with the index 0.4% lower at 8,164.

Miners are leading the decline.

Among the gainers, Compass is at the top of the pile.

The catering firm's shares are up 3% after a second upgrade to its annual performance expectations.
