SLO Days Parents & Supporters

Overnight accommodations for parents and supporters are not included as part of the SLO Days registration fee. However, parents and supporters of incoming Cal Poly students are invited to stay for a unique, on-campus experience during SLO Days. One or two night stay options are available for all sessions in beautiful Poly Canyon Village. 

Accommodations for students attending two-day freshmen sessions are provided with registration fee. 

Things to Do

While known for its laid-back pace and cozy setting, there’s actually lots things to do in San Luis Obispo , whether you’re young or old, athletic or more into a scenic drive.

California has long been tied to fun in the sun. And in San Luis Obispo, that sun is often accompanied by 75-degree flip-flop weather that makes everyone else in the country jealous.

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate that this is a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city, with lots of hiking and bicycling trails, many offering spectacular mountain views. San Luis Obispo features fun opportunities for golf , and horseback riding  while neighboring communities offer beach fun that includes surfing , kayaking and whale watching.

Every Thursday night, take advantage of a traffic-free chance to stroll through SLO’s quaint downtown and enjoy great food and music at the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market – a long-time favorite of locals and visitors.

Beer and Wine

Locally made wine has been a feature of San Luis Obispo since the padres grew grapes for sacramental wines in the 1770s.

Today, wine enthusiasts will enjoy dozens of Edna Valley wineries and other spots around San Luis Obispo, most of which offer special events and entertainment. And while many say SLO County’s wine scene now rivals Napa Valley’s (without the traffic!), SLO has also led the way with its hip and fun craft beer scene .

San Luis Obispo is fortunate to have a robust arts community , featuring music, visual art, theater and more. Cal Poly’s state-of-the-art Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center frequently hosts well-known national acts, speakers and critically acclaimed shows, while the San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre puts a spotlight on outstanding local talent. The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art offers dozens of free exhibits year-round, and the historic Fremont Theatre is just one of several music venues featuring touring artists, not to mention throwback films.

If you want more than a 1-and-done event, San Luis Obispo is a popular place for cultural festivals, including the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival and Festival Mozaic summer and winter fests for classical music enthusiasts.

The classic cable-car-style trolley is a fun, retro way to get around – for just 50 cents a ride. But if you really want to take it all in, you might want to hoof it for a leisurely SLO Walkabout.

An easy walking tour , at your own pace, will allow you to spend more time with iconic and popular SLO sites, including Bubblegum Alley , Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa , museums and art galleries . Explore on your own, or listen to a free, 90-minute podcast tour courtesy of the History Center of San Luis Obispo County, which located just across the street from Mission Plaza.

Of course, you’ll want to spend plenty of time in San Luis Obispo, named the “Happiest City in North America.” But its central location in the county – it is the county seat, after all -- is yet another great feature.

Stay in SLO and you’re just a short drive from it all: ocean views in Avila Beach, Pismo Beach, and Morro Bay; North County wineries and the California Mid-State Fair are only a half hour away in Paso Robles; a quick detour to the Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero; and the famous Hearst Castle can be reached via the scenic Highway 1 in 45 minutes.

How to Attend a Tour

You can sign up with a tour on the   Tours website . Click “Register for a Tour” under the header, “Student-Led Walking Tours”. A pop-up window will open and ask your admissions status. Answer, click “Next”, and then scroll down to find “Tour: College of Science and Mathematics”. Select the date you wish to visit, confirm the tour time, and click “Next”. Fill out the registration information to help us plan for your visit before clicking “Complete” to finish registering. You will receive an email confirmation with more information regarding getting to campus, parking, and other available resources.

The Bailey College of Science and Mathematics tours are led by college ambassadors once a month on Saturdays. Cal Poly Symphony and Choirs to Present a Concert of French and American Music on June 8

France Tour Preview Concert’ will highlight the groups’ upcoming tour

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Symphony and Cal Poly Choirs will perform celebrated works from the French and American repertory at 7:30 p.m. Saturday June 8, in the Performing Arts Center .  

The “France Tour Preview Concert” will feature works the symphony and choirs will perform while on tour of France in late June, including as part of the 80th anniversary of D-Day at the American Cemetery in Normandy, in the Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Paris, and other locations throughout the country.

Two Cal Poly choirs — PolyPhonics and University Singers — and the symphony will perform separately and together. David Arrivée directs the symphony, and Scott Glysson directs the choirs.

The combined ensembles will present a variety of shorter works by Gabriel Fauré and Camille Saint-Saëns. Both composers held the position of music director for the celebrated Madeleine Church, which is shaped like a Greek temple, in the late 19th and early 20th century.

“The motets by Saint-Saëns are beautiful, elegant and simple,” said Glysson. The works are also the subject of his research and dissertation.

As a part of the D-Day remembrance of the Allies’ June 6, 1944, invasion of France (Normandy) in what became known as the largest amphibious operation in military history, the choirs will present a haunting version of “In Flanders Fields” by Stephen Rew. “In Flanders Fields” is a famous war memorial poem published in 1915 by World War I Canadian medical officer John McCrae. The choirs and symphony will combine to perform John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen” composed for the 1998 film “Saving Private Ryan.”

The symphony will also perform Aaron Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody,” taken from one of the composer’s most iconic works, “Appalachian Spring.”

The choirs and symphony will combine for two larger pieces by important American composers: Dan Forrest and R. Nathaniel Dett. “I Thank You God for Most This Amazing Day” is a setting by contemporary composer Forrest of the E.E. Cummings poem. The poem, as demonstrated in the title, plays with word order and analogies to celebrate the beauty of God and nature.

Dett’s “Chariot Jubilee,” based on the African American spiritual “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” is a cantata for tenor, choir and orchestra. Dett was an early 20th century African American composer whose works were vital in bringing the “spiritual” genre to the masses through his symphonic settings of folk songs. Special guest tenor Wayne Jennings, staff soloist of the Washington National Cathedral in the nation’s capital, will be featured on the piece. Jennings specializes in the music of Dett.

Tickets to the concert are $15 and 20 for the public, and $10 for students and San Luis Obispo Jazz Federation members. Event parking is sponsored by the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).

Suspects in king city mass shooting arrested, sports college sports, carmel’s markow coaches cal poly, slo women’s rugby team to a national title.

An historic season for head coach Zach Markow was capped with a national championship.

The former Carmel High football standout guided the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo women’s rugby team to a Division II national championship last weekend in Houston, Texas.

Markow, who is in his sixth season as the Mustangs coach, had qualifying teams in the 7’s and 15’s (players on the field), with his 15’s squad beating Eckerd 104-5 in the title match.

A member of the title team as a player was another Carmel product in 2020 graduate Mira Meckel, who helped the team to a West Coast Conference championship.

The 7’s squad, which earned a trip to Houston after winning the conference title, finished sixth at the nationals.

The Charles and Claire Jacobsen Animal Health Center, set to break ground this spring, features 15,500 square feet of multi-use space flexible for teaching, research and clinical training — including wet labs, a surgery suite and a necropsy area.

It will include a covered outdoor area for animal examinations and a mobile ambulatory component that will expose students to livestock practices and encourage them to consider a career in animal care.

The new center is set to become an interactive, experiential animal facility that embraces hands-on learning, supporting the next generation of leaders in veterinary medicine, animal healthcare and animal agriculture. The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences offers one of the largest animal sciences programs in the country, with 75% of students entering with a desire to become a veterinarian – and is poised to serve as a much-needed pipeline for students who seek to enter a career in large animal veterinary care.

The building will reinforce teaching, research and clinical training for animal science students in a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will meet the growing demand for animal health and science professionals.

Cal Poly is a leader in veterinary medicine and animal agriculture, and one of only two undergraduate teaching veterinary clinics in the United States. The new center will provide an enhanced teaching space for veterinary care and expand on opportunities for students to get hands-on experience treating the college’s livestock including horses, cattle and swine. New treatment stalls and loading areas will create ease in moving animals from pasture to the facility — eliminating the need to treat animals in the field and giving students access to state-of-the-art equipment. In addition, the lab area will be configured with technology to allow larger groups of students to view procedures as they are done. 

“This new facility will allow us to teach at a level that better prepares students planning to attend veterinary school to transition with ease,” said Kim Sprayberry, associate head of the Animal Science Department. It will also have modern, state-of-the-art instrumentation and equipment that will enable students who work in small-animal practices to learn in an environment that is on par with their current workplaces, as well as the practices they will join after veterinary school.

The Charles and Claire Jacobsen Animal Health Center will ultimately foster a more collaborative and interdisciplinary approach between people, animals and their shared environment while training students in sustainable animal food production and animal agriculture. “We have spent many years improvising and adapting with our existing facilitates to offer students the best hands-on learning experience possible,” said George Gallagher, head of the Animal Science Department. “We are now evolving.” The complex will position Cal Poly as the top undergraduate animal science program for student, faculty and industry partners in the country.

AP Credit, IB Credit, and other Transfer Credit

• Official AP scores must be requested from College Board, using the Cal Poly AP school code of 4038. 
• IB transcripts may be requested from IB North America by email: [email protected], or by phone: (212) 696-4464.
• Go to your Cal Poly Portal ( my.calpoly.edu ) and click the “Academics” tab.
• Click on Poly Profile under “General Degree Resources” box

Community College | University Credit | Dual Enrollment

• Once your official transcript is sent to Cal Poly, it can take up to two quarters for the transfer credit to be applied to your academic record by the Office of the Registrar. Review the processing timeline
• This may impact your ability to enroll in future classes that require your transfer class as a prerequisite.

General Education (GE) course

• Step by step assist.org handout for finding a GE course
• In area C, your curriculum sheet says "lower division courses in Area C must come from three different subject prefixes". To ensure you have three different subject prefixes, refer to this mapping chart to see how your classes are identified.
• If you took an ART class for C1 and take another C1 for your C elective, then you cannot take an ART class for that category. When credit is transferred in from other schools, it may transfer as a different prefix based on which prefixes are available at Cal Poly. Check the previx mapping chart to ensure your credit will transfer into two different prefixes.

General Education (GE) Area D1 course

• The D1 requirement is mandated by the State, and must incorporate three components outlined on the Office of the Registrar's website .
• This may impact your ability to enroll in future classes that require your transfer class as a prerequisite.

Searching for online class options | California Virtual Campus | CVC

California Virtual Campus (CVC) is a database of online courses across 115 community colleges in California. These include mostly asynchronous and synchronous courses, and a few hybrid classes.

At this time, General Ed courses are searchable, but the "search by home college course name" feature currently is not updated, and will therefore not show any classes. If you are looking for specific classes online with this website, talk with an advisor.

Process - How to search for GE courses (outside of GE Area D1):

• Visit CVC.edu and scroll down to the search criteria
• For the Home California College, select "California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo"
• Search by "Gen Ed Requirements"
• NOTE: If you are planning to take a D2, D-elective, or GE-Elective for Area D, you can choose any class in the D-D9 categories.
• Search by clicking "find classes"
• On the search page, select the appropriate filters on the left (i.e. online format, term being offered)
• Note: We recommend checking the transferability of a class with assist.org as it is the most up-to-date website
• Once you are officially enrolled in the class, make sure to note when the course starts (also shown on CVC), and send transcript(s) when the course is completed.

Taking course at an out-of-state institution

Major or support course.

To satisfy a General Education area or a major/support course at Cal poly by taking a course at an out-of-state institution or at another four-year institution, you will need to get it approved prior to taking the course.

• Review your curriculum sheet and degree progress report (dpr)
• Read the course's description at catalog.calpoly.edu under the "Courses A-Z" tab.
• The description should address nearly all the same concepts as the course at Cal poly
• Form for Major/Support substitution found at registrar.calpoly.edu/registrar_forms
• Fill out the form, obtain the necessary signatures, and attach the course description. You will then wait to hear of approval. Please allow at least 2-3 weeks for this process.
• Take and complete course
• Once final grade is posted on your academic record, request an official transcript from that institution to be sent to Cal Poly. Learn how to send official transcripts to Cal Poly

Taking classes at Cal Poly over the summer

Cal poly summer options.

• Classes offered in the summer are structured over different lengths of time, depending on the design of the course. Traditional 10 week classes, a shortened 8 week class, or an accelerated 5 week class. Cal Poly offers two- 5 week sessions referred to as first-5 week session or second-5 week session.
• Students can take courses from all six of Cal Poly's colleges as well as those offered by extended education.
• Students register for courses through Schedule Builder/Student Center
• Summer student planning calendar is posted on the office of the registrar and students can see course offerings for summer typically in middle/late April
• Financial Aid can be a resource depending on a student's financial aid package. Students have to be enrolled in at least 6 units to be considered full time during summer term. Please reach out to the Financial Aid office to discuss options.
