Mount Bromo Volcano Sunrise In Indonesia (Travel Guide)
Watching the sunrise at the Mount Bromo volcano in Indonesia is easily one of the most amazing travel experiences in the world. You can even climb the crater and look directly into the smoking volcano!
Bromo can be visited on a road trip through East Java , along with other epic sights like the Ijen crater lake and giant waterfalls, or you can fly from Bali straight to Surabaya and visit Bromo on a day tour from there.
We’ve done it both ways, and would love to go again. Either way, the Bromo volcano is a bucket list item you shouldn’t miss on your journey through Southeast Asia.
This travel guide will explain how to go to Mount Bromo, what to see and do there, and everything else you need to know before you go!
The iconic lineup at Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The smoking crater on the far left is Bromo. The volcano erupting in the background is Semeru.
Where Is Bromo?
Mount Bromo is an active volcano crater located in East Java, Indonesia.
It’s part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where you can see a cluster of 5 incredible volcanoes (including Bromo), and Java’s highest mountain Semeru puffing out smoke in the background.
Bromo is located between the cities of Malang, Surabaya, and Probolinggo, and you can visit it from any of those places.

How To Visit Mount Bromo
The easiest way to visit Bromo is to fly to Malang or Surabaya, and then book a day tour or a multi-day trip from there. If you’re in Bali, you can also do it in the opposite direction, starting overland from Bali and then ending at Malang or Surabaya.
Bali has direct flights to and from Surabaya (SUB) every day, and a one way ticket can be as cheap as 700k Rupiah ($45 USD). You can shop for flights to Malang or Surabaya at Skyscanner.
Once you arrive in Malang or Surabaya, it’s easy to book a day tour to Bromo or you can arrange everything yourself if you prefer. A full day tour is enough time to see all the highlights of the park.
We normally like to do things without a tour, but this is one case where I think the tour is a good idea because it’s much more convenient and it includes extra activities like Jeep riding around the volcano. Bromo is a bucket list item and you want to do it justice.
Best Tour Package For Mount Bromo
Here’s a top rated day tour package for Mount Bromo starting from Surabaya or Malang.
You can book this with Klook as a private tour or shared tour, and it includes all of the highlights like the Mount Bromo sunrise, jeep ride in the sea of sand, optional horse ride, crater hike at the volcano, and you can also add the Madakaripura waterfall as a bonus to the itinerary.
If you’re wanting to do a multi-day trip, Klook has overland tours to Bromo and Ijen from Bali with guides, accommodation, and other expenses included. You can even add on a visit to the Tumpak Sewu waterfall .
We’ve used Klook for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where To Stay
In East Java you have the option of basing yourself in Surabaya, Malang, Probolinggo, or Mount Bromo itself ( Cemoro Lawang village ).
Surabaya has the most comfy hotels since it’s a major city in Indonesia, and Malang has some great options too. Probolinggo is smaller, but also has a few good hotel options .
Here are some of our top hotel recommendations below for the city of Surabaya, which is where we stayed on our last trip to Mount Bromo.
Surabaya Hotels

Sheraton Tower
Royal Singosari
Four Points Hotel
Staying At Bromo
If you want to stay really close to the action, there are some hotels at Cemoro Lawang village right by Bromo, but they tend to be pretty basic and overpriced for what you get.
Cemoro Lawang is generally not a fun place to stay because it’s very undeveloped and hasn’t caught up to the mass tourism at Bromo yet. That may change someday, but for now, most of the budget friendly hotel options at Cemoro Lawang are really rough.
Our top recommendations there would be Cahyo Homestay Bromo , Good Karma Guesthouse , or Guesthouse Gunung Bromo . Again, don’t expect luxury.
You can see the highlights of the volcano in one full day tour, so it’s not really necessary to stay there longer unless you’re a serious photographer or just want more time exploring the area.
Best Things To Do At Mount Bromo
• mount bromo sunrise.
First things first — witness the famous sunrise at Mount Bromo!
Before you start exploring the mountain up close, you have to see the sunrise from the top of the caldera. Every tour package starts like this, and for good reason.
It’s probably one of the best places in the world to watch the sunrise. The colors are amazing, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Mount Argopuro in the east.
• Mount Bromo Volcanoes Viewpoint
The viewpoints on the north side of the caldera are where you can get those iconic pics of the volcano cluster.
Your main options are Seruni Point , King Kong Hill , Bukit Perahu , Bukit Cinta , or the highest viewpoint Penanjakan . You can click each of these links for map coordinates.
To be honest, there is very little difference between these viewpoints and the only reason so many of them exist is to help space out the crowds at Bromo, which can be pretty crazy (especially on weekends).
In other words, don’t worry about which viewpoint you go to — they’re all amazing, so just enjoy the epic scenery! Photography here in the early morning is ideal because you’ll get nice shadows and atmospheric fog around the base of the caldera.
• Sea of Sand
After sunrise, the next stop is the ‘sea of sand’ at the bottom of the caldera. The locals call it Lautan Pasir, which means the same thing in Bahasa Indonesia.
This is a really neat place and you’ll need to pass through it anyway to reach the Bromo crater. You can explore the sea of sand by Jeep, horse, or motorbike.
It’s a perfect photo spot with the steep ridges of the Mount Widodaren volcano in the background.
Mount Bromo Jeep Tour
Horseback riding
• Mount Bromo Crater Hike
Possibly the most amazing thing to do at the Bromo mountain complex is the hike to the top of the smoking volcano crater.
The full hike to the top of the crater, starting from the sea of sand, takes about 1 hour, although you can speed it up if you ride a horse partway.
The last part of the hike has to be done on foot, and it’s a short but steep climb up a concrete stairway to the top of the crater. It’s not too hard for non-hikers, and even kids can do it.
Be careful at the top because there’s not much of a safety railing, and on a windy day it has nasty sulfur fumes that are hard to breathe. Generally you can’t see red lava here, but you can peek right into the smoking crater of the active volcano!
Is The Volcano Safe?
Mount Bromo is generally safe to visit, but it’s a good idea to check the current status before you make plans, otherwise you may not get the full experience if part of the park is closed.
There were eruptions in 2010, 2015, and 2019. Usually no one is hurt, and you can still get some great views from a distance, but at the very least they may close access to the Mount Bromo crater hike , because during a 2004 eruption two tourists were killed by flying rocks there.
Nowadays, the area is closely monitored and they have earthquake detectors underground to anticipate any major volcanic activity.
No one has been hurt by the volcano in almost 20 years, and it gets close to 1 million visitors per year, so overall the safety record is pretty good.
Entrance Fee
- Weekdays: 220k IDR (~$15 USD) / person / day
- Weekends: 320k IDR (~$21 USD) / person / day
These entrance fees for Mount Bromo are current as of 2024.
It’s a bit pricey by Indonesian standards, and I wish they would at least make the tickets last longer (like 3 days) so you could get more bang for your buck.
Weather / Climate — How Cold Is It?
Even though this is Indonesia, it can be pretty chilly before sunrise since you’re 2,329 meters (7,641 ft) above sea level, and the sunrise viewpoints are even higher!
The elevation at the Penanjakan viewpoint is a whopping 2,770 meters (9,088 ft). For Indonesia, that’s unusually high.
Temperatures can drop below 7 Celsius (45 F), and that doesn’t even factor in wind chill. It can get incredibly windy on the mountain peaks, and dry season is cooler than rainy season.
However, you’ll only be chilly before sunrise. After that, it warms up pretty quick, and the sun at this elevation is plenty strong.
If you’re too cold at Mt.Bromo while waiting for sunrise, you can also rent a jacket at your hotel, or rent a jacket from one of the many small local shops near the sunrise viewpoints.

What To Bring
- Jacket: This is essential for sunrise because it can be very chilly. After sunrise, you’ll want to shed the jacket.
- Footwear: Regular shoes are fine, but sturdy hiking shoes are better for the Mount Bromo hike. If you go to the crater, you’ll be walking on slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines at times.
- Sunglasses: Can be good to protect your eyes from sandstorms in the sea of sand.
- Poncho: If you visit Bromo during the rainy season in Indonesia (especially December to February), you might want to bring a rain jacket just in case.
- Snacks: Even though most tours include free breakfast, it’s skimpy and you’ll probably be wanting energy snacks to go with it.
- Headlight: This is useful for hiking before sunrise, especially if you plan to do the crater hike without a guide.
- Camera: Mandatory! A small tripod could be handy too since it’ll be dark before the sunrise.
- Drone: So far, there aren’t any rules against flying a drone at the Mount Bromo volcano, although I wouldn’t recommend doing it at the sunrise point since it’s so crowded. Once you go down to the Sea of Sand, there’s a lot of wide open space to fly without bothering people.
The stubby peak of Mount Batok
Best Month To Visit
There’s not really a best month to visit Mount Bromo, although any time in the dry season is definitely ideal.
Indonesia’s dry season runs from April to November, and during this time there’s less rain and the mountain visibility is best. This applies to East Java too.
You can still visit Bromo during the rainy season in East Java (December to March), but if it’s cloudy you may miss the sunrise and the iconic view of the volcanoes, so it’s not ideal.
With that said, both of the times we went here were technically on the tail end of the rainy season, and we still had perfect weather, so don’t write it off completely.
In general, it’s hard to avoid the crowds at Mount Bromo because this place has become a bucket list item for so many people. Definitely try to avoid weekends and public holidays, because the park can get especially crowded during those times.
If you want to see an active volcano in Indonesia without any crowds, check out Mount Dukono in North Maluku. This one is more remote than Bromo and requires a harder hike to reach, but it’s spectacular and you might have it all to yourself!
Is Mount Bromo Open / Closed?
Yes, Mount Bromo is currently open for tourists as of 2024! I’ll update this travel guide if anything changes.
The mountain is rarely closed to the public, and that would only happen temporarily if there’s some kind of special ceremony, or if there’s unusual volcanic activity or other safety concerns.
Mount Bromo will be briefly closed for Wulan Kapitu (January 9-10, 2024), Silent Day (March 11-12, 2024), and Yadnya Kasada (July 6-7, 2024), and again for Wulan Kapitu (December dates TBA, 2024).
You can also check on status updates for all of Indonesia’s volcanoes at Magma Indonesia .
Happy travels!
More Things To See Near Bromo
There are lots of good things to see and do in East Java, Indonesia, including the spectacular Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and a bunch of other nice waterfalls near Malang and Probolinggo.
After visiting Mt Bromo, most travelers head on to Kawah Ijen , a spectacular crater lake on the eastern end of Java island.
You could even climb Mount Semeru, which is Java’s tallest mountain. It’s the volcano peak you see erupting in the distance behind Bromo.
Don’t forget to check out my 1-Week Java itinerary for more ideas of what to do in Central and East Java!

Mount Bromo vs Kawah Ijen: Which Is Better?
So which is better, Mount Bromo or Kawah Ijen ? And if you only have time to see one of them, which should it be? That’s not an easy question, actually.
In my opinion, Bromo has a more spectacular landscape, and you get to look into a smoking volcano crater. The hiking is also easier compared to Ijen, and it’s closer to a major airport (Surabaya), although the drive from town is longer.
On the other hand, Mount Ijen has the world’s biggest acid lake, with a spectacular turquoise color, and you can see the ‘blue fire’ phenomenon if you go there at night. Ijen also has the advantage of being closer to Bali, and closer to a town (Banyuwangi).
Overall, it’s hard to choose between Mount Bromo vs Kawah Ijen. I lean toward Bromo as my favorite, but that’s just my opinion and I’m sure plenty of people would disagree with me. If you have time, definitely try to see both places when you’re in East Java!

Hi David. Hope you’re well. My name is Sujay, I’m from Mumbai, India – and I’ve been planning a trip to Bali and Java for the past few months to come hike a few volcanic mountains and shoot some videos for a personal art project. I’ve been reading your blog a lot and have really enjoyed the pics and details – very helpful. However, just 5 days before I was arrive in Bali, I heard the news that the Bali government, just last week, has banned entry to ALL mountains for tourists and locals alike. I was wondering if you know anything about this – is the ban in effect and super strict? Or are there guides still taking tourists on hikes?
The ban is specifically for the province of Bali and whatever places comes under its jurisdiction – I think this includes east Java too. I wanted to know if trips to Mt. Bromo and Kawah Ijen are still happening or these sites are also banned from climbing?
Are there any other active/smoking volcanoes outside of the official Bali province which you’d recommend? I was also looking at visiting smoking lava fields, hot springs etc…
I’m already here in Bali, so it would be great if I hear back soon!
Thanks so very much. Looking forward, Sujay
Hi Sujay, thanks for your comment. I just replied on email. The Bali mountain ban being pushed by the governor is not in effect at the moment, and I think it’s very unlikely it will happen. In any case, it wouldn’t affect any of the mountains in Java, including Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen. Good luck on your trip!
Could you please elaborate on: “and you can even travel from Bali to Mount Bromo without much hassle.” If we want to travel overland from Malang to Bali, what would be the best way to do so?
Hi Kelsey! We hired a private driver and did a road trip starting from Malang and ending in Bali. We saw a bunch of waterfalls near Malang, and then did Bromo and Ijen on the way to Bali. You can see some of our itinerary ideas here . If you want to simplify it, Klook has multi-day tours to Bromo and Ijen from Bali with guides, accommodation, and other expenses included. Before covid there were also direct flights from Bali to Malang (and vice versa), but right now the only flight options are Yogyakarta or Surabaya. Good luck! I’m happy to answer any questions.
Love the post, lots of great information please keep updated….
Hi David, my name is Paula and I be travelling to Surabaya over this weekend for a Bromo Crater hike. Heard this was an off limit activity since the fire. Wonder if this ban has been lifted and if there is anywhere online that I can check for this update? By the way, thanks so much for sharing your journeys and beautiful pictures.
Hi Paula! Thanks for your comment. Bromo officially re-opened for tourism yesterday (September 19). I haven’t heard if that includes the crater hike, but I would think it’s open as well. The fire is already extinguished. Good luck!

How to Arrange Your Bromo Tour (The Complete Guide)
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park offers some of the most amazing landscapes in the whole of Indonesia. It is especially beautiful at sunrise as the mist rolls over the valley and the sun rises behind Bromo Volcano. However, arranging a Bromo Tour can be surprisingly difficult. It’s easy to get over charged, stay in the wrong place or make a silly mistake (like not bring a warm coat).
To help you arrange your Bromo trip I created this short guide. The guide covers everything you need to know to arrange a Bromo tour. The guide has been broken down into easy to navigate sections. You can click the link to jump directly to a certain part of the Bromo Tour Guide.
- Where to Stay: Find Out More
- Entrance Fee: Find Out More
- Jeep Rental: Find Out More
- Bromo Tour: Find Out More
- Booking a Tour: Find Out More
Let’s get started.
Where to Stay
When you visit Bromo you can stay in one of the following three cities; Malang, Surabaya or Probolinggo. Surabaya is the furthest away from Bromo. It is a 90 minute car drive from Surabaya to Mt Bromo. Malang is a little closer. It is a 60 minute car drive from Malang to Mount Bromo. Probolinggo actually overlooks Mount Bromo.
The 3 Mount Bromo Tours
From surabaya: bromo midnight tour.
If you decide to book a hotel in Surabaya you will join the Bromo Midnight tour. The reason it’s called the Surabaya to Bromo midnight tour package is because you get picked up from your hotel at midnight. From Surabaya you will be driven directly to Bromo for sunrise.
From Malang: Bromo Sunrise Tour
The Bromo Sunrise Tour is for people who are staying in Malang (which is closer to Bromo). The driver of your car will pick you up from your hotel in Malang at 3:30am. It’s a one hour and forty minute to 2,5 hours from Malang to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park at night. During the day it is around 3-3,5 hours journey. To actually visit Bromo you need to swap cars, because only members of the local community can drive the jeeps you need to take to visit the volcano.
From Probolinggo: Bromo Probolinggo Tour
The Bromo Probolinggo tour is the most convenient of the three options. The hotels in Problinggo actually overlook Mt Bromo volcano. If you are staying in Probolinggo then you have the option of either walking to the Penanjakan viewpoint or renting a jeep to take you there. It’s a 3 hour walk from Probolinggo to Penanjakan, which means that you will need to set off at approximately 1:00 am – 2:00 am to reach the viewpoint for sunrise (the walk is almost all uphill).
Visiting Savana Hill. It’s a beautiful green landscape in the wet season.
Mount Bromo Entrance Fee
There is an entrance fee to enter Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. For Indonesians the price for entrance to the national park is at around Rp30,000 per person. For foreigners there are two price prices. On weekdays the price for the entrance ticket is at around Rp 240,000. On weekends and Indonesian public holidays the cost is at around Rp 340,000.
Jeep Rental
To take the Bromo tour you will need to arrange a jeep rental. There are two different tours you can choose from, the short tour and the long tour. On the short tour you will visit Penanjakan Viewpoint to watch sunrise and climb Mount Bromo Volcano, before returning to your hotel/ driver.
If you go on the long tour you will go to Savana Hill and Whispering Sands (Sea Sands). You can arrange a jeep rental on arrival in Bromo, but it is more convenient and cheaper to pre-book the jeep. All of the jeep rentals at Bromo are pretty much the same model. A Bromo jeep rental can fit up to five passengers. The price for a Bromo jeep rental changes according to the tourist season. See the table below for more information on jeep rental prices.
Mt Bromo Tour
If you take either the Bromo Mindnight or Bromo Sunrise tours you will need to change cars to a jeep to get to Penanjakan. If you are staying in the Bromo National Park area the jeep will pick you up at your hotel. Penanjakan does get really crowded for sunrise. There will be a big crowd. For the best experience visit on a weekday, because it’s not as packed and it’s also cheaper (it’s still quite busy though).
Whichever tour you take, the first place you will stop is Penanjakan viewpoint (or other viewpoints such as King Kong Hill, Cinta Hill, etc). This is where you will watch sunrise from (it’s where everybody takes those beautiful photos that Bromo is so famous for). There’s a perfect 15 minutes or so to take some amazing photos and then it’s over for another day. Those 15 minutes are worth waking up really early in the morning for.
Climbing Bromo
After sunrise the jeep will take you to Bromo crater. It is a 25-minute car drive from Penanjakan to the crater. The jeep will drop you off on the dusty valley floor. From there it’s a relaxing 30-minute walk to the crater. If you have children, or you just want to do something different, you can ride a horse to the crater.
It is an easy climb to the top of Bromo crater. On the final part of the climb there are concrete stairs dug into the side of the crater. From the top of Mount Bromo you can look inside the crater, which is normally smoking. Many locals throw offerings into the crater. The view from the top are really beautiful. If you are on the short tour the driver will take you back to your hotel after climbing Mt Bromo.
The rugged landscape of Whispering Sands.
The Long Bromo Jeep Tour
After you’ve climbed the volcano you will visit the Tengger Sea Sands and the Savanna Hill. This part of the tour takes around an hour. During the tour you can ask the driver to stop so you can take some photos. The landscape is really impressive. At the Tengger Sand Sea you see the volcanic sand. This area is popular for people who do off road motocross.
In the Savannah area you are surrounded by an island of green (or brown-ish if it is dry season). The visit to these two places is a real chance to see the contrasts in the landscape of Mount Bromo. On the tour of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park you’re guaranteed to take beautiful photos that you’ll want to share with your family and friends.
Arranging a Bromo Tour
The Bromo tour is really special. The view of the sunrise is an unforgettable experience. You can probably understand why I tell all my friends they have to join this tour if they visit Surabaya or Malang or Probolinggo. To help you arrange a tour without the usual hassle I’ve partnered with some local independent drivers and we can take care everything.
Here’s What’s Included in the Package:
- Pick up from your hotel or the train station/ airport
- Transport in a comfortable car
- Experienced local driver
- Entrance costs for Bromo
- Drop off at your hotel
FYI Bromo is an active volcano. We do monitor the volcanic activity at the crater. Sometimes people are not allowed to visit the crater when the authorities request the visitors to be 1-3 km away from the crater. You can still enjoy the amazing landscape of Bromo.

Thank you Uniek! Namanya seru sekali 🙂 Ini jg masih banyak latihan, dan kadang masih suka aku revisi karena kalau dibaca lagi suka ada yg aneh / salah tulis. Hahahaa.. Yes, I really want to go to Bromo again! Hopefully in the near future. Thanks for dropping by here, Cheers!

I just discovered Mt Bromo while researching for inspiring weekend getaway from Brunei. There is a direct flight to Surabaya from here and I am so tempted to see Mt Bromo. Your article convinced me to visit, but the flock of tourists may change my feeling about visiting. Just want to compliment on your article 🙂
Hi Emily, Thank you for your kind words and the visit to my blog. You should go to Bromo. 🙂 Promise that you will not regret. :p It is pretty amazing!
Firs..ini kyknya gw mau ke bromo december nanti.. hehe.. waktu itu elo berangkat dr mana dan sewa mobil ga yah? hehe
Jenitaaa.. Aku udah kirim infonya by email yaa. 🙂
Great articles! Very inspiring. What is the best way to get from Yogyakarta to Surabaya or Probolinggo? We are leaving in one week to Indonesia 🙂 I’m very excited.
Kind regards, Ayla
Hi Ayla. Thanks for the kind feedback. I’d recommend taking the train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya or alternatively the plane. It really depends on your timetable and budget. If you haven’t done the train before I think it’s worth it though 🙂 Hope that helps.
Thanks for your information. Can you please email me a package for a midnight tour from Surabaya airport?
Hi Anton, We sent you an email on Sept 22. Please let me know if you receive the email ok. Look forward to hearing back from you, Anton.
Can you help me with the tour, i fly from Jog to Surabaya and from Suryabaya i intend to stay at Malang so i can avoid the midnight ride to Bromo, can you help me with best way to get to Malang frm Suryabaya airport. i would like you to help me stay and a tour for Bromo as well, from here i intend to flyout to Bali. appreciate your help
Though on the google maps you can go to Bromo through Wonokitri / Poncokusumo, but it is not the usual route. I personally never tried it. I always go through Probolinggo, this means it takes 3-4 hours drive from Malang to Bromo. From Surabaya to Bromo is 4-5 hours. The best way to travel from Surabaya to Malang is by rent a private car. If you don’t want to do anything in Malang, it is better to go straight from Surabaya to Bromo. When is your travel date? Please get in touch with us through email: [email protected] . Thank you.
Hye Firsta..ur article is very helpful for me to plan my trip to Bromo next April 2018. Im looking forward to experience milky way in Bromo..heard the view was awesome!! Can u give any tips on combining the milky way session with sunrise?will be reaching at Juanda Airport airport around 5:55p.m. Is the camping site at Bromo being recommended anyway?and if it yes, any suggestion on how to rent it for a night?
Hi Sue, I don’t have the experience of camping in Bromo so I don’t know if they have a campsite around the area. My suggestion is to stay overnight at Lava View Lodge, it is one of the best lodges in Bromo in regards to location. From in front of the lodge, you can see the Bromo volcano, Mount Batok, etc. The view is something like this (I took this shot). You can come out from the hotel around 10-11 pm or 1 AM to see the milky way. You can get some rest afterwards and start the sunrise tour with the jeep at 3:30 AM. Hope this helps. If you are interested in arranging the tour with us, complete the form closer to your travel date (1,5 months before is sufficient). Have a good day!
Thanks Firsta for your prompt reply.. the shot is so beautiful!!!
Thanks Sue!

Hello, I am a KITAS holder and i really want to go to brom from surabaya. I have asked to a travel agent and they said I have to pay for bule price for this year (2019). I always have local price in Indonesia (borobudur, bali, komodo island). Is this thing true?
Hi Elizabeth, Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I think started from 2016 or 2017, you can’t get a local price with Kitas anymore.
Hey Firsta, my girlfriend and I have just arrived to an airbnb in Malang and we are looking for a genuine driver willing to take us to either one of these Bromo tours or to a bromo tour followed by Tumpak Sewu. Do you have anyone honest to recommend as most drivers start throwing the randomest numbers out there thinking that we “bule” produce money out of our ass ? And it’s definitely not the case. Please help ???
Hi Benjamin, Riri sent you an email a few days ago, but I think its probably too late. Hope you had a great time in Indonesia.
Dear Fiesta,
We are planning to do a 3d2n Bromo Ijen tour on 2nd of June. Any tips?
4-5 June is Idul Fitri, it is one of the biggest Muslim celebrations in Indonesia. Usually some destinations especially those in Java will be quite packed and the traffic will be generally bad. If you can, I recommend to change your travel date.
Dear Firsta, Looking to do the Bromo & Ijen tour 7th and 8th of May. I’m a single traveller on a tight budget. Could you please help me out? Thanks!
Dear Danique, Unfortunately we don’t have recommendation for a shared tour for Bromo and Ijen. We only run a private tour arrangement. Hope you can find something and have a great time in Indonesia.
Hai, saya Faridha dari Bandung rencana long tour Bromo di awal Juli sekitar tgl 5. Kalo saya menginap di Plataran Bromo jam brp Jeep jemput ? Dan berapa biaya nya ? Terimakasih
Hi Firsta, thanks for your informative guide. Me and my girlfriend will be in Probolinggo in the first two weeks of August and want to do a Bromo tour. How much is the long tour for this period? And are there any options to do a two day tour with a night near Bromo?

Me and 2 two are planning to go to Bromo from Malang. We are planning to arrive by train at 3:30am and go directly to Bromo. I have no idea if it is possible but we were thinking to go to Probolinggo after Bromo instead of coming back to Malang.

Dear Firsta,,
Apa khabar, saya physically disabled (using elbow crutches). Is it possible for me to enjoy Mount Bromo trip ?
Hi Rosli, I think it should be fine. The journey to the crater will be challenging. You can take a horse, but you need to hike some stairs. Bromo is also nice to see from afar (from the viewpoint or several points around the sea sands and the savannah, which you don’t need to hike to reach). Take care!
Hey there FIRSTA,
I’m planning to visit Bromo somewhere end of this year. Would be able to share some itinerary for a private tour? Planning to stay 3 to 5 days for this trip. Thank you 🙂
Hi Rani, I will get in touch via email. Speak to you soon!

Bromo Crater Hike
For the intrepid souls seeking a closer encounter with Bromo’s volcanic magnificence, a hike to the Bromo Crater is a must. Begin the journey from the foothills, traversing the Sea of Sand, a vast expanse of volcanic ash. As you ascend, the distinct sulfuric aroma fills the air, signaling your proximity to the crater. Standing at the rim, peer into the heart of Bromo as wisps of smoke rise from its depths. The view is both humbling and surreal, offering a tangible connection to the Earth’s elemental forces.
Whispering Sands Adventure
The Sea of Sand isn’t merely a passageway to the crater; it’s an adventure waiting to unfold. Locally known as Pasir Berbisik, or Whispering Sands, this unique terrain is a vast stretch of volcanic ash with a fascinating acoustic phenomenon. As you stroll across the sands, you’ll notice a soft, whispering sound beneath your footsteps. It’s a natural symphony, created by the fine particles of volcanic ash rubbing against each other. Take a moment to let this auditory marvel sink in, adding an extra layer of wonder to your Bromo experience.
Savvy Exploration at the Teletubbies Hill
Nestled amidst the undulating landscapes of Bromo lies the Teletubbies Hill, named after its striking resemblance to the fictional landscape from the popular children’s show. The rolling hills, covered in vibrant greenery, create a picturesque setting that feels almost surreal. It’s an ideal spot for those seeking a more serene encounter with Bromo’s beauty, away from the bustling crowds.
Tumpak Sewu: Curtain of a Thousand Waters
Tumpak Sewu emerges as a hidden gem, a breathtaking cascade near the iconic Bromo. Known as the “Thousand Waterfalls,” it descends dramatically from lush cliffs, forming a mesmerizing curtain of mist. The journey to Tumpak Sewu is an adventure through dense jungles and precarious trails, unveiling the raw beauty of nature. As the falls plummet into a turquoise pool below, the sheer force creates a symphony of sound. This spectacle, surrounded by tropical foliage, evokes awe and wonder, offering a serene respite amid the rugged landscapes that define this enchanting region.
Unraveling the Mysteries of Blue Flames
As the night falls over Ijen, a mysterious phenomenon begins to unfold. Deep within the crater, fumaroles emit electric blue flames, creating an ethereal spectacle that is both surreal and captivating. The journey to witness these blue flames involves a night hike, guided by experienced locals who navigate the challenging terrain with ease. As you approach the heart of the crater, the intensity of the blue flames becomes more pronounced, casting an otherworldly glow on the rocky landscape. This rare display of nature’s power is a testament to the high sulfur content within the crater, and it stands as one of the primary attractions for those seeking an unforgettable nocturnal experience.
Sunrise Over Kawah Ijen
As the night gives way to dawn, the landscape transforms into a canvas painted with hues of pink, orange, and gold. The sunrise over Kawah Ijen is a spectacle that rivals the famous sunrises around the world. Positioned at the rim of the crater, spectators are treated to a breathtaking panorama as the first light of day bathes the turquoise lake below in a warm, golden glow. The juxtaposition of the serene lake against the rugged volcanic terrain creates a visual feast that lingers in the memory long after the sun has fully risen.
Hiking the Trail of Sulfur Miners
The iconic image of sulfur miners trekking up and down the steep slopes of Ijen is a poignant reminder of the human endeavor in the face of formidable natural forces. Joining a sulfur miner’s trail is an immersive experience that takes you into the heart of their challenging daily routine. Witness the strength and resilience of these miners as they carry baskets laden with bright yellow sulfur chunks, extracted from the fumaroles within the crater. Engage with them, hear their stories, and gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made in the pursuit of this elemental resource.
Observing the Acid Lake and Volcanic Geology
The turquoise lake within Ijen Crater is not just a picturesque backdrop; it is a testament to the geological forces at play. The lake’s stunning color is a result of the high acidity and the presence of various minerals in the water. Geology enthusiasts will find Ijen to be a fascinating case study, with its acidic lake and the intricate network of fumaroles. Guided tours provide insights into the volcanic processes that have shaped this landscape over millennia, offering a holistic understanding of Ijen’s geological significance.

Mt Bromo Crater Rim Hike
After watching the sunrise, we hiked back to the parking lot. Then we went by jeep to the Pura Luhur Poten temple at the foot of Mount Bromo. Although tourists are not allowed inside the temple, you can take some pictures from outside.
The jeeps, sand sea, and horse riders offer fantastic photo opportunities.
Then, after you’ve taken enough photos, walk to the crater entrance through the sea of sand, which is about 20-30 minutes away! We do not recommend riding horses!
As small sand storms may happen, you should wear sunglasses and a light scarf to protect your eyes and mouth.
The last part of the hike is a 10-minute climb up the steep concrete stairs to the top of the crater. You can do a crater rim walk, but it’s good to know there are few railings, so be careful and stay within the safety area!
Mount Bromo is not the highest peak in Indonesia, but it is an active volcano at 2329 meters above sea level.
Sometimes, it is not allowed to do crater rim walk due to volcanic activity. Unfortunately, it was forbidden at the time of our visit!
You can also visit the Coban Pelangi waterfall on the way to Malang after Mount Bromo. The entrance fee to Coban Pelangi waterfall is 15,000 IDR (1 USD).

Mount Bromo is the most unique volcano in Indonesia's ring of fire
DOMINATED BY TENGGER TRIBES
The most recent caldera in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru Natioanl Park is the 9 × 10 km-wide volcanic ashen black sea of sand, which is surrounded by the towering cliffs of the crater edge. This caldera formed between 33,000 and 45,000 years ago. An overlapping cluster of postcaldera cones was constructed on the floor of the ‘Sandsea’ caldera within the past several thousand years. The youngest of these is the Bromo tuff cone. More than 50 mild-to-moderate explosive eruptions have occurred since 1804, as recorded in the Global Volcanic Network (GVN) data base.

MOUNT BROMO
Take a journey to the foggy mountain village, enjoy the golden sunrise, endless skies, and powerful crater.
THE VILLAGE IN THE CLOUDS
The journey to Mount Bromo can be considered one of the most beautiful trips in East Java. Enjoy the view of the green jungle and its towering rocks before reaching Cemoro Lawang Village. Lying at an elevation of 2,217 meters above sea level, this foggy mountain village offers strong vibes of traditional Javanese culture and beautiful vistas above the clouds. As the home to a small ethnic Tengger community, who mostly work as farmers, the hills of Cemoro Lawang are transformed into terrace farming where you can find potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, and tomatoes growing.
THE SACRED VOLCANO WHERE THE GOD LIVES
According to local legend, the people of Tengger are believed to be descendants of Majapahit Princes. They hold the sacred Mount Bromo in high regard as not only the home of their ancestors but also as the dwelling place of their God, Sang Hyang Widhi. Once a year, on the 14th day of the month of Kasada, the Tenggerese people conduct a holy ceremony at Luhur Poten Temple, situated at the foot of Mount Bromo. During this event, they pray for blessings and a peaceful life under the moonlight. The ritual concludes with the symbolic act of throwing offerings, such as crops, animals, jewelry, money, and other precious items, into the Crater of Bromo.
The origin of the Kasada Ceremony stems from the ancient tale of the childless King Joko Seger and Queen Roro Anteng. Desperate for a child, the couple prayed to Sang Hyang Widhi, who granted them not just one, but 25 children, under the condition that the youngest be sacrificed to the deity. Over time, King Joko Seger and Queen Roro Anteng reneged on their promise and fled to escape divine retribution. In response, the volcano rumbled ominously as God pursued them, ultimately claiming their youngest child by taking them into the crater. Booking a mount bromo tour in 2024: what you need to know.
Ah, Bromo. The sunrise views here were the most epic I’ve seen in the world so far.
I can’t begin to describe the beauty.
It’s worth the early start.
Anyway ...I’m getting ahead of myself!
So, you’re thinking of visiting Bromo and going on a Bromo Tour. Well great!
Below I’m going to take you through everything you need to know about visiting Mount Bromo and our top travel tips , whether you opt for a DIY style tour or an organised one.
Brad and I did an organised tour and to be honest we never usually take tours, but decided we should have one for this, and it was the best tour I’ve done, plus it was private...more on that later.
First things first ...
Travellerspoint
What is Mount Bromo?
Mount Bromo is an active volcano in East Java located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. It’s 2,329 in height which doesn’t make it the highest in the area, but certainly the most well known and iconic. If you’re looking to do a Bromo tour, then the chances are you’ve seen the amazing pictures, so you’ll know what you’re dealing with...but if not, then here you go…
How do you get to Mount Bromo?
Well this can be divided into a variety of sections depending on where you are coming from. But if you’re going on a Bromo tour, you’ll be taken on a custom keep that’s made for the conditions, or if you are doing your own DIY thing, you’ll probably have a moped, which isn’t safe...take it from someone who has had an accident.
Getting to Mount Bromo from Malang
This is where Brad and I went from on our Bromo tour and it was super easy. Our tour guide picked us up around 1am and it only took 1.5 hours to get to Bromo, so we had lots of spare time, but it was good to get a spot early, and also grab some drinks around the fire at night. We got to mingle with other travellers too.
If you DIY it you can rent a moped in Malang for around 80,000 but they might not want you to drive it on the sea of sand...more on that later.
Getting to Mount Bromo from Yogyakarta
You can’t do a sunrise tour from here. You’ll need to either get the train from Yogyakarta to Malang and do your Bromo tour from there. OR you can fly from Jogja to Malang too and the same idea as above.
Tour: Check out this tour that combines Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater
Getting to Mount Bromo from Surabaya
Mount Bromo is located 4 hours drive from Surabaya, this means if you’re heading in the morning for a sunrise tour, you’re going to have to leave late the night before. Whilst I have no doubts that people do probably do this, I think it’s worth trying to get to a closer town and going from there.
Tour: You can book a sunrise tour from Surabaya here
Getting to Mount Bromo from Probolinggo
This is the closest area to Mount Bromo if you decide to DIY your tour and go via your own moped. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive to the park from here. But again I warn you about the sand and be wary that you might have to “walk” your bike. We have seen quite a few people doing this and it will eat into your time.
Should you do a Bromo Tour or DIY it?
This is the big question, should you do a Bromo tour or do it yourself?
Okay, so when Brad and I do any sort of activity, we always like to do it ourselves without a tour guide as they tend to rip you off. But after I did some research into doing Bromo by yourself, I didn’t think it was worth it.
Basically when you are getting to Mount Bromo, you drive through a “sand of sea” that’s literally in pitch black and there are no directions to where you need to go. Hence the reason why only certain types of jeeps are allowed in the park.
Imagine a moped on sand, and think about what it will do, it will get stuck and it will skid and you will be at risk of coming off. I came off a moped due to skidding in gravel and had to get stitches in my knee. Yes sand isn’t gravel, I’m just indicating the danger.
If you’ve never rode a moped before then do NOT, I repeat do NOT ride it for the first time in sand. It would be the height of stupidity.
But if you’re confident enough to skid and perhaps falls and drive in the dark with no directions, then go ahead. When we drove by with our jeep, (which even got stuck in the sand at one point, btw), we have seen a few people on mopeds “walking” them because they kept getting stuck.
So, basically, I think it’s worth doing a tour. Group tours aren’t our thing either, so we opted for a private tour because it was only a couple of pounds extra. Some tour companies will charge you double for a private tour, but not our guy!
Other benefits of doing a Bromo tour is that your guide will know something about the area, can take cool pictures of the two of you (if you’re travelling as a couple like Brad and I), and even take you to some secret photo spots, which our guide did. Actually our guide LOVED taking travel photos . It felt like having a photographer with me through the day, which was awesome.
We also had breakfast included and actually Brad and I always tend to “complete” activities a lot quicker than others, which is another reason we don’t like group tours (we have to sit around and wait for everyone else), but with our private Bromo tour we could leave as quickly as we wanted.
Where will you visit on a Bromo Tour?
You’re first spot will be the sunrise spot, wherever that may be. You’re second spot will be the sea of sands as you drive through, you’ll probably stop at another Bromo viewpoint, then you’ll head up the Bromo Crater.
You’re last spot will be Teletubbies Hill and you can even add on a waterfall to your tour for an extra fee of 100,000 if you wish which is called Coban Pelang. We didn’t so I can’t say how good it is.
When is the best time to do a Bromo tour?
The best season to do a Bromo tour is during the dry season of Indonesia. This runs from April to October. Brad and I visited in August and the weather was perfect. No rain in site and the views were amazing.
How much does a Bromo tour cost?
When I was pricing around for a Bromo tour, there was a wide range of prices that were coming back to me.
Some people were taking the piss and others were just expensive. So we went to our hotel in Malang, Whiz Prime and asked them about organising a tour. They put us in contact with Mr John who owns the Bromo sunrise tour company that’s located in Malang city centre. He offered two prices:
For a group tour: 650,000 per person (Around $45)
For a private tour: 750,000 per person (Around $52)
All including guide, entrance, transport and breakfast. And it was a great price and worth every penny we spent. This was the most expensive thing we paid for in all of Indonesia, so I was more than happy to pay it.
This is his whatsup number, if you want to book!
Should I do a Bromo Sunrise tour?
Yes, yes and yes. Whilst I am sure it’s nice to visit at other times of the day, you cannot go to Mount Bromo and not do a sunrise tour. It would be one of the biggest regrets ever.
Where are the best places to watch the sunrise on a Bromo Tour?
When you go on a Bromo tour with a group, I would assume that there is a set destination for your sunrise spot. However, Brad and I went on a private tour and our driver basically suggested a few spots to us and let us decide.
He recommend Kong Hill, based on how busy that day was, and whilst Kong Hill is super busy, all you need to do is climb the sand hill a little bit and you’ll find spots with less people so you can enjoy your sunrise moment in peace.
Other Bromo tour sunrise spots include:
What is the nearest airport to Mount Bromo?
Malang is the nearest airport to Mount Bromo. Malang is a pretty cool city to explore with its many great surroundings, so if you want to spend a few days there too, you can check out my post on the best things to do in Malang for some inspiration.
How long does it take to climb Mount Bromo?
Even though Mount Bromo is located pretty high, you don’t climb on that. You’re already way up high, so the actual climb is around 30 minutes, depending on your fitness level.
It’s a fairly easy climb, but the thing that makes it challenging is the darn sand. It’s hard to get a grip in sand, so that’s why it can take a little longer getting up.
When you’re up there, you’ll literally on the edge of a crater that has sulphur down there. There is NO barrier to protect you after a certain point, so be super careful if you walk past other people and make sure there is no strong wind.
This make for an epic drone shot, but I wouldn’t do anything stupid on the edge of a crater. Just saying!
You can also get donkeys to bring you up to the crater, bar the last steps, (which are so dodgy and need re-doing- be careful), but please don’t use them. I have no idea how much they cost, but the donkeys don’t need it.
Is it safe to visit Mount Bromo?
Yes. Of course it’s an active volcano, so you’re probably thinking “what if it erupts?” well the national park monitors the activity of the volcano and if activity is too high etc, then you won’t be allowed to visit. So don’t worry, it’s safe to visit.
What do you wear to Mount Bromo?
Warm clothes! It’s very cold up there before the sun rises. But if like Brad and I, you didn’t exactly pack your winter gear on a trip to Indonesia, well you’ll be happy to know that you can rent a thick winter coat up there for 30,000 IDR which is awesome.
You can also buy hats at 30,000, and they were a great investment and super cosy. It would have been such a horrible experience if we were not warm in some way. But you can also stay warm at the little fires they build at all the cafes.
You can buy coffee and tea for 5,000 to help stay warm too. It’s not overpriced, which is great.
Bromo tours: Booking online
If you prefer to have your tour organised ahead of time, then there are a few online tours I recommend.
If you're coming from Bali, then this tour combines Bromo and Ijen Crater into a 3 day tour. You can actually see these volcanoes from North West Bali on a clear day!
From Malang, you can opt for this tour which is well priced and got great reviews!

The Mount Bromo Sunrise Journey
I’m not a morning person. Well , sometimes I can be. I’d love to say I’m that chipper person who oozes sunshine when needing to wake up at 2:00 am for a 3:00 am starting, but I’m not.
This however is one of the few times I needed to be that ‘before crack of dawn’ person.
Being ripped from your bed in the early hours is obviously not the way most people would epitomize their vacation, but for the chance to see the Mount Bromo sunrise you’ve got to bite the bullet.

Our guide and driver, Eddy was waiting for us along with the throngs of other Jeeps at the entrance to Mount Bromo National Park. ‘Jeeps’ is in Italics because it’s actually 1980’s Toyota Land Cruisers.
It’s 3:00 and time to leave, The lengthy queues of Jeeps contained the masses of fellow adventurers eagerly awaiting the start of their adventure to Mount Bromo with the first stop being Mount Penanjakan.
This is the place you NEED TO BE for the sunrise Bromo offers. Getting there is easy. The Jeep literally takes you from your hotel doorstep to the parking area for a quick trip up to the viewpoint.
💡 This is the bonus for arranging your trip through a tour.
The trip was exciting , you’re driving on ‘ who knows what’ in complete darkness , in the back of this old Jeep that makes you truly feel you are truly at the start of an adventure.
With literally just the car lights ahead of you shining onto the next Jeep, you kind of have no idea where you are or where you’re going which just makes the anticipation grow that much more!
One thing you will realise is that wherever you’re going, there’s a lot of sand.
Depending on how long the queue takes to get into the Bromo Tengger National Park will determine how early you are for sunrise. Our drive was pretty quick and we reached the parking lot for Mount Penanjakan earlier than expected.
So it’s cold . You know when you first land in Indonesia, the first thing that hits you smack in the face is humidity, well, here it’s not the case , at over 2000 metres (8000 ft) altitude, you best be wearing a jacket.
Needless to say, some warming up was in order and was easily arranged. In the parking area, there are plenty of little makeshift stalls and cafe-type structures selling coffee, teas, and warm snacks.

It seems we were going to a little area of Mount Penanjakan that was not as crowded as the other viewpoints.
The seclusion and secretiveness of stealthily creeping behind the cafes and makeshift paths towards the viewpoint was so exciting.
A short walk up and we were there in place to start watching the slivers of sun creep in.
As the clouds and became less visible and the light peeked through, I knew that this moment would be one I’d remember for the rest of my life.
What materialized from the clouds by the sun was at the time one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen.
Mt Bromo: Quiet, breathtaking, and yet so powerful. It’s a moving moment. You can really just sit for hours and stare. Which I did.
The Mount Bromo images and photography from this viewpoint are honestly the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and can truly say this is one of the few destinations where what you see in the pictures is truly what you are getting with NO FILTERS NEEDED!
TRAVELIST INSIGHT: I’m not sure if you’ve realised yet, but I still haven’t mentioned the word ‘hike’. With all the pictures you’ve seen, there’s literally been no hiking! So what do people actually mean when they say ‘hike Mount Bromo’? That part comes next.
Reaching the Mount Bromo Crater Rim
This is where the words ‘hiking Mount Bromo’ are derived but as I’ll explain, there’s no hiking involved at all.
Once you’ve finished basking in the beauty of the Mt Bromo sunrise, the jeep will take you down Mount Penanjakan and across the sea of sand.
Bromo‘s crater rim climb involves taking the Jeep close enough to the base of Bromo which is actually what we passed in the early hours of darkness.
The Jeep will then drop you off at the parking area, and you’ll make your way on foot across the sea of sand. This is where you truly come to terms with the fact that this is a volcano.
The sand is actually volcanic ash. And there is a ton of it. You definitely need to be wearing some sunglasses and a mask or buff over your mouth.
The walk isn’t very far, but there is the option to ride a horse to the stairs for a fee. I’m just mentioning this, It’s not something I’ve tried or have any insights into.
Now I mentioned the words stairs. Yes, there are stairs . There are stairs to reach the crater rim of Mt Bromo Indonesia! How crazy and effortlessly convenient is that?!?
Hiking Mount Bromo actually involves NO HIKING at all!
Yes, the stairs involve the effort of doing them, but you can easily take your time and do it at your own pace, and it’s really no more difficult than walking uphill.
My mind was blown . I really thought that you would need some level of physical fitness to embark on this adventure of the summit of Mount Bromo volcano. The Mt Bromo hike is literally a walk and some stairs.
If you can do that in your day-to-day life, there literally is no further preparation needed to conquer this mountain.
‘Hiking’ Bromo Indonesia was easier than running 1 kilometre (less than a mile!).
The Bromo view even from the stairs is quite other-worldly . I’ve never been to another planet (as many of us haven’t) , but I imagine that this must be what the landscape must be like.
Mount Bromo crater was a quick walk up the stairs and there you have it. You are literally face-to-face with the crater of an active volcano.
Another factor making this feat so incredible is that the entire crater rim is completely walkable (at your own safety) . There is a barrier between yourself and the crater as you reach the top of the stairs, but you can easily walk left or right for an unobstructed view.
You do need to be careful. It can be sandy and slippery so you do this at your own safety expense.
It is mesmerizing though. It’s not the lava and magma you see from an eruption, but the sulfur deposits and gases that actually create the billowing smoke that is characteristic of volcanoes.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
It was a moment I didn’t even know I needed to tick off my bucket list.
Now onto the nitty-gritty details. If you’re looking for how to plan this trip to Indonesia, below is a Mount Bromo comprehensive guide on everything you need to know about visiting and planning a trip to Gunung Bromo Indonesia
Where is Mount Bromo?
Simply put, It’s located in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java, Probolinggo near the small town of Cemoro Lawang . Check it out on the map below
When to Visit Mount Bromo?
The best time to visit Mount Bromo would be between April/May to October . Our visit was in the first week of June .
Indonesia only has two seasons (dry season and wet season). The wet season starts in November and lasts till mid to end of April. I’d recommend trying to visit Gunung Bromo Indonesia just out of the rainy season in May or June.
How To Get to Mount Bromo
Mount Bromo is an easily accessible location and can be reached from a number of cities. The closest major cities to Mount Bromo are Malang and Surabaya. Surabaya is a bigger city hub therefore, most people fly to Surabaya and drive to Cemoro Lawang Bromo accommodation.
Bali to Bromo
✈️ OPTION 1: The fastest way is to book a flight from Bali (Ngurah Rai International Airport) to Surabaya Airport (Juanda International Airport) where you can be picked up by your tour company.
🚢🚌 OPTION 2: The second option involves a couple of transfers. In Bali you will need to head to Gilimanuk Port , you then will depart Gilimanuk to East Java’s Ketapang Port . After arriving in Ketapang Port, head to the bus terminal to take a bus to Surabaya bus station, after arriving at Surabaya you can then be collected by your tour company to transfer to Cemoro Lawang.
TRAVELIST TIP: If you think flying is pricey here, you’re highly misinformed . In Indonesia, there are a number of low-cost carriers and domestic airlines so finding a deal that’s as cheap as taking the ferry, train or bus is pretty easy.
Yogyakarta to Bromo
🚆 OPTION 1: Take a train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya (approximately 4 hours). Get collected by your tour company and transferred to Cemoro Lawang Bromo accommodation.
✈️ OPTION 2: There is also the option to fly from Yogyakarta (Adisucipto International Airport) to Surabaya . Then be collected by your tour company from the airport.
Have more time to spend in Yogyakarta? 📖 Check out these Incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites : Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple
Surabaya to Bromo
TRAVELIST TIP: The Surabaya Bromo tour option is a popular one because Surabaya is a more popular destination (and cheaper) to fly to from bigger cities like Jakarta, Bali, or Yogyakarta.
✈️🚆 OPTION 1: Get your tour company to collect you from the train station/ airport and head to Cemoro Lawang for your accommodation.
💡 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: We did this trip as part of a combined tour that included Mount Bromo, Ijen Crater, and Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls. I strongly suggest a combined tour and making the most of your time in East Java and these spots are seriously not to be missed! ➡️ BOOK IT HERE
🚌 OPTION 2: (Public Transport) In Surabaya you will be able to use public transportation like the bus to get to Probolinggo , another ‘main’ city close to Mount Bromo. The bus will then stop in Probolinggo where you will then need to get into a smaller green mini-bus to get to Cemoro Lawang. There is also the option to take a train from Surabaya Station to Probolinggo Station and then do the minibus transfer to Cemoro Lawang.
Malang to Bromo
🚗 OPTION 1: Stay in Malang, use a tour company that leaves from Malang to Mount Bromo.
🚌 OPTION 2: (Public Transport) Head to the Malang Bus station and take a bus to Probolinggo, From there take the small minibus van to Cemoro Lawang

Mount Bromo Tour Package Prices
Prices will vary depending on whether you visit Mount Bromo only or do a tour combined with other destinations like the Mount Bromo-Ijen tour.
TRAVELIST TIP: Be sure to check your inclusions and exclusions in tour packages prior to booking . Things like entrance tickets, jeep rental, driver, guides, etc. may seem mandatory, but if something is not stipulated – ASK!!!
A typical private 3 day 2-night Surabaya Mount Bromo tour can start from IDR 3. 5 to 5 million and upwards per person.
💡 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: Our Mt Bromo tour price was 3 days and 2 nights and included Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and Ijen Crater, 2 nights accommodation, drivers, guide, and all entrance fees were included. The only exclusions were lunch and dinner. We paid 4 million IDR per person. This is an EXTREMELY GOOD Mt Bromo tour package for a PRIVATE TOUR from Surabaya at the time.
If you don’t go for the tour package option, here’s an idea of the Mount Bromo tour price for the individual fees below
Mount Bromo Entrance Fees
Mount Bromo Entrance Fees: TOURIST – IDR 220 000 (weekdays) IDR 320 000 (weekends and peak season), LOCAL – IDR 29.5000 (weekdays) IDR 34.000 (weekends)
Mount Bromo Jeep Fees
Jeep Rental Fees: These fees are determined by whether you just visit the Mount Penanjakan Viewpoint (short tour) or visit the Mount Penanjakan viewpoint and go to the crater Rim (long tour)
🚙 Short Tour Jeep Price: low season- IDR 500 000; high season- IDR 650 000
🚙 Long Tour Jeep Price: low season- IDR 700 000; high season- IDR 850 000
These fees are In addition to the entrance fees, but a Jeep can take 4 people so you could also find others to share with and split the costs.
PERSONAL OPINION: There have been many articles stating how you should never take the first price provided and that locals are out to cheat foreigners and overcharge or even scam you. The tours that I have recommended above are reviewed and operated by reputable companies using local guides and drivers. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING A TOUR COMPANY for the reasons that the jobs are given to locals and this is their source of income and you are also contributing to the growing economy of this third world country.
I also believe that the people reporting being scammed and overcharged are not using reputable and reviewed guides and agents. Most local guides, companies, and drivers are charging the figures listed above.
If you are getting a deal vastly different from what’s listed above, then perhaps it’s shady and you should look elsewhere. Things that are too good to be true, usually aren’t!
What to Wear to the Mount Bromo Sunrise
As mentioned above the weather in Cemoro Lawang is cold!
Like European winter cold!
It’s not very common to wear long pants and jackets in such a tropical country but at these altitudes, you’ll need to cover up. I suggest dressing in layers as you’ll probably want to peel some off after you’ve summited the Mount Bromo crater.
PACK THESE ITEMS
🧥 Warm Jacket – something not too heavy (Down jackets are great and easy to fold up and pop back into your backpack)
🧥A Vest or Thin Activewear Top – to wear under your thin top (You might be questioning whether you need 3 layers – typically get hot and 3 layers were just enough for sunrise)
🧥 Long Thin Top – to wear under your jacket to shield you from the chill after the jacket becomes too much
🧥 Beanie – My ears were freezing, it’s recommended!
🧥 Gloves – my fingertips were going numb, you need these.
🧥 Buff/ Bandanna or Mask – to cover your mouth whilst driving in the jeep across the sea of sand and for the walk to the crater rim.
🧥 Sunglasses – to shield your eyes from the ash and dust when walking across the sea of sand (and generally just from the sun)
🧥 Sports Sneakers or Shoes with a bit of Grip – closed shoes are recommended for the walk through the sand as well as for ankle support in the soft sand (hiking boots are not essential)
🧥 Light Day Bag or Backpack – for your camera gear, water and to put your layers in after you’ve taken them off
Typical Mount Bromo Sunrise Hike Itinerary
One of the things I absolutely love about this adventure destination is that this incredible experience can be accomplished literally in one morning. Your Bromo mountain tour starts at 3:00 am and completes at 10:30 am.
This is a typical Mount Bromo itinerary for sunrise:
- An early morning start of 3 am is required for the Mount Bromo Sunrise Hike tour.
- The jeep will then take you to Mount Penanjakan (a 30 to 40-minute drive depending on how busy it is that day).
- It will park just before Mount Penanjakan, where you will walk for about 10-15 minutes to the top of Mount Penanjakan for the King Kong Hill Viewpoint. The time for sunrise will usually be about 5:30 am. Indulge in something warm to drink and snack on from the vendors
- From the top of Mount Penanjakan, you will see a panoramic birds-eye sunrise view of the gigantic Tengger Caldera, Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru, and other lesser but equally impressive volcanic cones.
- After sunrise, you will board the jeep again, where you will be driven down (approximately a 20-minute ride) to the bed of the caldera via the plains through the Seas of Sand.
- The jeep will stop at a car park just beside The Poten – a Tenggerese Hindu temple.
- Then walk across the seas of sand (volcanic ash)
- Next is the Mount Bromo steps: a concrete flight of (approximately 240) steps will lead you from the base of Mount Bromo to its crater rim, where you can peer down into its crater.
- After taking in the scenery, you will head back to board the Jeep
- The jeep will take you back to your accommodation where you can warm up/cool down with a shower, have some breakfast and check out of your accommodation around 10:30 am or 11:00 am
