The Acropolis The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on an extremely rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis comes from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, “highest point, extremity”) and πόλις (polis, “city”). Although there are many other acropoleis in Greece, the significance of the Acropolis of Athens is such that it is commonly known as “The Acropolis” without qualification.

The Parthenon The Parthenon is a former temple, on the Athenian Acropolis, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron.The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, Athenian democracy and western civilization, and one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments.

The Propylae The monumental gateway to the Acropolis designed by the architect Mnesicles 437-432 BC.

The Temple of Athena Nike Built around 420BC, the temple is the earliest fully Ionic temple on the Acropolis. Nike means victory in Greek, and Athena was worshipped in this form, as goddess of victory in war and wisdom.

The Erechtheio The Erechtheion or Erechtheum is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens which was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. The temple as seen today was built between 421 and 406 BC. In the north side, there is another large porch with six Ionic columns, and on the south, the famous “Porch of the Maidens”, with six draped female figures (caryatids) as supporting columns.

The Temple of Zeus The Temple of Olympian Zeus was dedicated to Olympian Zeus, a name originating from his position as head of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century BC during the rule of the Athenian tyrants, who envisaged building the greatest temple in the ancient world.

The Panathenaic Stadium The Panathenaic Stadium or Kallimarmaro (literal translation “beautiful marble”) is a multi-purpose stadium in Athens, Greece. One of the main historic attractions of Athens, it is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. The stadium was built on the site of a simple racecourse by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) c. 330 BC, primarily for the Panathenaic Games. he stadium was excavated in 1869 and hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. After being refurbished, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896.

The Royal Palace The Royal Palace is the first royal palace of modern Greece, completed in 1843. It has housed the Hellenic Parliament since 1934. The Old Palace is situated at the heart of modern Athens, facing onto the Syntagma Square .

Plaka Pláka is the old historical neighborhood of Athens, clustered around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis, and incorporating labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture.

National Archaeological Museum of Athens The National Archaeological Museum in Athens houses some of the most important artifacts from a variety of archaeological locations around Greece from prehistory to late antiquity. It is considered one of the greatest museums in the world and contains the richest collection of artifacts from Greek antiquity worldwide.

Acropolis Museum The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece . It also lies over the ruins of a part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens.

The museum was founded in 2003, while the Organization of the Museum was established in 2008. It opened to the public on 20 June 2009.Nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres.

We use luxury Mercedes Taxi, legal and licensed by the Greek National Tourism Organization. ( License Number 06ΣΞ00261ΣΟ ). Prices are quoted per car & not per person. If you prefer without tour guide, our English speaking driver can give you all the historic information while you can watch a video about the tour. The driver is not permitted to enter archaeological sites and museums with you, only licensed guides from the ministry of culture are allowed to do so. Driver will wait maximum 60 minutes after the indicated pick up time, kindly be on time.

Summer Essentials

Comfortable clothing and athletic walking shoes are recommended. Hat, sun glasses and sunscreen to protect yourself are suggested.

Athens Taxi: All You Need To Know

Athens Taxis are safe and operate 24 hours. They’re also quite affordable and you can easily find a taxi on the streets or at taxi stands. Many taxi ranks are available especially in tourist areas like Monastiraki and Syntagma. It’s also possible to call a taxi from the radio taxi line. 

All taxis in Athens are yellow regardless of their brand and type. 

There are over 13,000 taxis in Athens, so it’s easy to flag down one. 

Different taxi companies are available, however, they all have set pricing and are fully regulated. 

General Rates of a Taxi Ride in Athens

All taxis in Athens use a taximeter. So, your fare is calculated according to the distance you want to go. 

Also, there are two different tariffs. Tariff 1 is for between 5 a.m. and 12 a.m. Tariff 2 is for the duration between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. 

Extra charges also exist for each piece of suitcase you have over 10 kg. They also apply for airport pickups or pickups at the train and bus station, or port. Special holidays and one-hour waiting time also come with extra fees.

• Rate per kilometer in the daytime and central Athens: €0,74
• Rate per kilometer in nighttime and in the surroundings: €1,29
• Surcharge for telephone reservations: €1,92

Airport Rate for Taxis in Athens

There is a fixed rate for travel between Athens International Airport and the city center: €38. If it’s between midnight and 5 a.m., then the rate is €54. Also, the fixed rates include VAT, tolls fee, turnpikes, meter start, taxes, airport charge, and so on. This applies both ways. If your destination is other than the city center or Piraeus Port, the charge will change accordingly. 

You can find taxis between Exit 2 and Exit 3 at the arrival area while leaving the airport. You may need to wait in a queue as well. You can also book your taxi beforehand if you don’t want to wait in line.

Some Tips When Using a Taxi in Athens

• It’s better to know the name of the main streets and avenues just in case of overcharge.
• If you think you’re overcharged, you can ask for a receipt from the driver. The receipt needs to include the taxi number and the information about the taxi operator. You can then go to the tourist police. 
• It’s advisable to check the taximeter. For daytime, they must have Tariff 1 on. 
• On the days of demonstrations, some of the main roads are closed off. At these times, taking into an additional duration in your travel is advisable. 
• You can call a local radio taxi company in bad weather or if it’s late at night. You can also call a taxi from the Athens taxi app in Greece. In this way, you don’t need to wait and try to find a taxi outside. Note that there may be additional costs for this service as well. 
• Keeping changes and small bills are advisable in case your taxi driver doesn’t have change for large banknotes.
