Capstone Day 2024 Highlights Senior Theses

  • Campus News

scripps college tour

For the past 17 years, Scripps’ Capstone Day event at the end of the spring semester has served to celebrate the research and hard work that graduating seniors have dedicated to their theses and final projects in pursuit of their degrees.

This year’s Capstone Day on May 2 was made available by Zoom in addition to its in-person sessions.

“As in years past, this Capstone Day was a wonderful event highlighting the remarkable accomplishments of our graduating seniors,” says Associate Dean of Faculty Warren Liu. “For the seniors, it’s a chance to share their research projects with the Scripps community and with each other. For students, faculty, staff, friends, and family in attendance, it not only provides an opportunity to learn about these impressive projects, but equally importantly, serves as a welcoming and inclusive venue where we can come together to recognize and celebrate the students who produced them.”

The 79 theses spanned 20 disciplines and covered a wide range of topics including the long-term harm that overincarceration does to the reproductive capacity of affected populations, the impact of light intensity on the hunting patterns of wolf spiders, the consequences of the criminalization of homelessness in Los Angeles, and the effects of hospital mergers.

The presentations were conducted inside the Edwards Humanities Building. Senior art theses are exhibited at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery’s Double  Take  senior art exhibition, which runs until May 11 and features digital illustration, drawing, painting, ceramic sculpture, mixed media, and more.

I agree to the following: Masks are no longer required in most spaces across the Scripps campus. Exceptions to this are in academic classes, the Malott Commons dining hall, and the Motley Coffeehouse (while ordering a drink). Masks are strongly encouraged in all venues (indoors and outdoors) where social distancing can’t be maintained. Where masks are required, they must be of surgical quality or higher.

If you are notified that you have been determined to be a close contact, the current LA County guidelines require that you wear a mask when around others (indoors and outdoors) for ten days after the exposure. Current Los Angeles County guidelines define “close contact” as having shared the same indoor airspace with someone with COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period while they were infectious. If you are not feeling well, the College encourages you to stay at home and reschedule your visit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend to stay at home if you or anyone in your party is experiencing flu-like illness until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever (have chills, feel very warm, have a flushed appearance, or are sweating). This should be determined without the use of fever-reducing medicines.

New York's Rikers Island jail gets a kid-friendly visitation room for Mother's Day

Nadine Leach and Lashawna Jones at Rikers island

It's probably the last place a mom wants to spend Mother's Day with her kids. But a family visiting space at New York City's notorious Rikers Island jail complex is a little more kid-friendly after a colorful redesign by the Children's Museum of Manhattan.

The jail opened the new preschool play and learning room for the children and grandchildren of female prisoners on Tuesday, a few days ahead of the Sunday holiday.

"Mother's Day means everything to me," said Rikers inmate Nadine Leach, 43, as she watched her three-year-old granddaughter, Queen, excitedly explore the sound machines, coloring books and toys.

One interactive wall display shows a map of the city's five boroughs. Buttons below trigger city sounds, like the screech of a subway.

Leach's daughter Lashawna Jones, 27, said the play installation is beautiful compared with her last visit. Before, it was a mostly bare room, with a few books. Jones said the design focused her children's attention on imaginative play, instead of their grandmother being in jail and awaiting trial on a felony drug charge.

"It makes me sad that she's not actually home with us for Mother's Day. Because I feel like a little sad coming here to visit her here because I'm used to having her physically home with us. Like, right now, I'm being a big girl; I'm holding my tears back," Jones said.

To get to the facility, families take a bus, go through security and drug screenings, and pass by walls with six layers of razor wire. Outside the new play center, a sign on blue cinderblock reads, "Inmates are permitted to hold their children during the visit."

The visitation hub was designed and installed by the Children's Museum of Manhattan and replicates exhibitions at the museum's home on the Upper West Side.

The exhibits teach preschool skills: communication, sharing, literacy and executive function, said Leslie Bushara, the museum's chief program officer.

Lynelle Maginley-Liddie, commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction, cut a giant green ceremonial ribbon to open the room.

"We want mothers to have interactions with their kids," Maginley-Liddie said. "You know, being incarcerated can be very difficult. It can be difficult on the children. It can be difficult on the moms. And it's important for them to have those connections even while they're in our care, so that when they are released, that bond has been sustained during incarceration."

Rikers Island consists mainly of men's jail facilities that house around 6,000 people. Child-friendly exhibits will be added to those facilities over the next year, the museum said in a statement. Funding for the exhibits also will allow approved inmates to travel to the Children's Museum of Manhattan twice per month.

People jailed at Rikers are either charged with crimes being tested in court or are serving short sentences. City officials voted to close the entire complex in 2026 and replace it with smaller neighborhood facilities that would be easier for relatives to visit, but the deadline was pushed back. Poor conditions have raised the prospect of a federal takeover.

The women's jail, called the Rose M. Singer Center, currently holds around 370 people, according to the Department of Corrections. State officials moved hundreds of women into state facilities in 2021 in an effort to improve safety.

Virginia veterans fight to keep college funding for their families: 'I paid the price with my body'

scripps college tour

RICHMOND, Va. -- A group of Virginia military veterans and their families await the outcome of budget negotiations between Governor Glenn Youngkin (R - Virginia) and state lawmakers.

United States Marine Corps veteran Stuart McFaden said he and other veterans hope the budget includes money to fund the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program and no alterations to how it is managed.

The program, run by the Virginia Department of Veterans Service (VDVS) in partnership with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) covers eight semesters of in-state tuition for children and spouses of permanently disabled veterans or for those missing, killed, or prisoners of war.

"This is going to shape for probably our next 10 plus years of how we live," McFaden said about the budget.

Poster image - 2024-05-09T185246.728.jpg

McFaden served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and was injured leading to his disabled status.

He planned to use the money to send his high school senior to college this fall.

"We had already been telling him that I paid the price with my body, with my mind, and all my absences, I paid the price. So that way you can go to school," McFaden said.

The number of people using the program has been increasing in recent years.

Virginia Commonwealth University said it provided a quarter of the waivers in the state and its 2023 enrollment numbers were times larger than 2018s and costs have increased by over $13 million since 2017.

A spokesperson for SCHEV said in the 2018-19 school year at four-year universities over 1,300 students received waivers through VMSDEP and nearly $12-million in tuition was waived. By 2022, there were over 6,600 students enrolled and over $66-million was waived.

Screen Shot 2024-05-09 at 6.13.50 PM.png

At this year's General Assembly, the program faced several changes when lawmakers included language in their version of the state's two-year budget.

"All of us together collectively said, Hey, this is not what was promised to Virginia's veterans," Kayla Owen, whose husband is a disabled Coast Guard veteran, said.

Owen said that included requirements to access other state and federal funding options first, pay out of pocket first, and limit it to only bachelor degrees.

The latter has impacted her plans to study to be a nurse practitioner.

She created a group to lobby against the changes and said the move goes against Virginia's compact to be the most veteran-friendly state.

"By removing services to the most disabled, the most, the most vulnerable of those groups, that certainly does not fulfill that compact," she said.

When Governor Youngkin sent back his proposed budget amendments, he removed that language but called for a study to look at ways to improve the program's long-term viability.

Youngkin was asked about the negotiations between the Republican and Democratic-control General Assembly in late April.

"I don't believe there's a disagreement here. I think that in the final budget, we will, we will land in a very, very comfortable place to make sure that this program continues," he said. "It's part of our collective commitment to making Virginia the best place to live work, raise a family, and be a veteran."

McFaden and Owen said veterans choose to retire in Virginia for that reason.

"This is huge for us. I mean, there's really no way to say that," McFaden said.

The compromise budget is supposed to be released on Monday and lawmakers will be back in Richmond, with the plan to vote on it Wednesday.

Small pro-Palestinian protests held Saturday during college commencements

Palestinian demonstrators are escorted out of the UW-Madison Commencement.

Small pro-Palestinian protests popped up sporadically Saturday as colleges and universities held commencement ceremonies, including dozens of graduating students at Virginia Commonwealth University who walked out on Gov. Glenn Youngkin's address.

While some of the estimated 100 students and family members who left during the Republican governor's speech showed support for Palestinians, others held signs signaling opposition to Youngkin's policies on education, according to WRIC-TV.

At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a small group of demonstrators staged what appeared to be a silent protest during commencement at Camp Randall Stadium. A photo posted by the Wisconsin State Journal showed about six people walking through the rear of the stadium, with two carrying a Palestinian flag.

Marc Lovicott, a spokesperson for campus police, said the group, which he believed were students because they were wearing caps and gowns, “was kind of guided out but they left on their own.” No arrests were made.

The demonstration came after pro-Palestinian protesters at the campus agreed Friday to permanently dismantle their 2-week-old encampment and not disrupt graduation ceremonies in return for the opportunity to connect with “decision-makers” who control university investments by July 1. The university agreed to increase support for scholars and students affected by wars in Gaza and Ukraine.

Saturday's events were less dramatic than what happened on other campuses Friday, when police made dozens of arrests as pro-Palestinian protest encampments were dismantled at the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Those actions came hours after police tear-gassed demonstrators and took down a similar camp at the University of Arizona.

The Associated Press has recorded at least 75 instances since April 18 in which arrests were made at U.S. campus protests. Nearly 2,900 people have been arrested at 57 colleges and universities. The figures are based on AP reporting and statements from schools and law enforcement agencies.

At VCU, Youngkin, who also received an honorary doctorate of humane letters at Saturday's commencement, did not appear to address the students who left the event.

“The world needs your music,” Young said during his speech. “You, all of you, will be the symphony. Make it a masterpiece.”
