Wilmington is one of the most captivating cities on the North Carolina coast. Though not as well known as Charleston , South Carolina or Savannah , Georgia, Wilmington has a photogenic historic district, a great dining scene and wide-ranging attractions, plus lovely beaches just outside of town .

Bursting with southern charm, Wilmington is an easy place to love – in part because there’s so much to do here. You can peer back in time at a packed history museum or scramble through the corridors of a WWII battleship.

The city’s gardens have a blend of beauty and the bizarre, from fragrant magnolias to Venus flytraps. You can also get a dose of nature, taking kayaking trips through the Banks Channel or watching the sunset from the Riverwalk. Here's our pick of the top things to do in Wilmington.

Learn about the way people lived in the 19th century at the Bellamy Mansion

The grand 22-room mansion in Wilmington’s historic district gives an eye-opening perspective of how residents lived prior to and during the Civil War. A self-guided tour takes you through the entire house from basement to belvedere as well as to the restored quarters of the people who were enslaved here at the back of the property.

Along the way, you’ll gain insight into the real people who lived here, like William B Gould, an enslaved artisan who escaped to freedom in 1862, and later served the remainder of the Civil War working for the Union Navy.

Peer back in time at the Cape Fear Museum of Science and History

Even the most reluctant of museum-goers tend to have a great time exploring the fascinating collections of this Smithsonian affiliate . Open since 1898, the Cape Fear Museum of Science and History has exhibited everything from 8000-year-old Native American artifacts and a prehistoric ground sloth (the skeleton) to Michael Jordan memorabilia – the NBA star grew up in Wilmington and he remains the city’s best-loved native son. Hands-on activities add to the fun at this top destination for families.

Explore the decks of the USS North Carolina, a restored WWII battleship

The massive, 45,000-ton USS North Carolina played a major role during conflicts in the Pacific. You can learn all about the vessel’s adventures and see what life was like for the 2300 wartime sailors who lived and worked aboard this floating city on a self-guided tour. Visiting the ship’s nine different levels, you’ll pass living spaces, the barbershop, the sick bay, the engine room and many other areas.

The Riverwalk in Wilmington NC at sunset with restaurants and boats lining the boardwalk on either side

Breathe in the salt-tinged air while taking in the views along the Riverwalk

Skirting along the Cape Fear River, the Riverwalk is hands-down the best place in Wilmington for a memorable stroll. The boardwalk path, which runs for 1.75 miles, passes waterfront parks, restaurant terraces and bars, with fine viewpoints along the way. Some 30 years in the making, the Riverwalk remains the pride of Wilmington since its completion back in 2017.

Stop and smell the azaleas in Airlie Gardens

If you’re around in early spring, don’t miss a visit to the 67-acre Airlie Gardens . Thousands of bright azaleas transform these botanical gardens into a brilliant kaleidoscope of colors. At other times of the year, the Airlie is still worth your time as there’s always something in bloom, and the garden's icons – like its centuries-old live oak trees – never fail to impress.

Ponder nature’s oddities at the Museum of the Bizarre

What are the best cheap things to do in Wilmington? The list in this budget-friendly town runs rather long, but at the top is undoubtedly the Museum of the Bizarre . For a mere $3, you can check out one collector’s macabre assemblage of exotica, from a taxidermy two-headed goat to an imprint of Bigfoot’s, uh big foot. Afterward, head to the Laser Vault Maze, a favorite with kids. There you can navigate through a web of lasers attempting to reach the end without crossing through a beam.

Indulge in a multi-course feast at one of the best restaurants in Wilmington

Famed for its seasonal fare, PinPoint Restaurant serves some of the best cooking in the south. Executive chef Cameron Garvey sources from local fishers, farmers and foragers with a menu that changes nightly. Expect mouthwatering seafood (like sea bass carpaccio topped with caviar), tender grilled meats with surprising accents (hemp butter, duck fat, melted leeks) and imaginative vegan delicacies like fried oyster mushroom steak.

Enjoy a day by the seaside at Wrightsville Beach

Just east of Wilmington, a short causeway leads out to the island of Wrightsville Beach. Four miles of sandy shoreline sets the stage for a memorable seaside getaway.

Come early to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic, or spend the day relaxing on the beach and frolicking in the waves. Whether you’re looking for the best free things to do in the area or simply seeking a great family activity, Wrightsville Beach should figure at the top of your list.

Go for a scenic paddle through Banks Channel

Immerse yourself in the rhythms of coastal life on a paddling adventure near Wilmington. Picture yourself gliding past marsh grass on the mirrorlike waters of the Banks Channel as an osprey soars overhead, and you’ll understand why so many local paddlers rave about this unique area.

Wrightsville SUP rents standup paddleboards, kayaks and other aquatic gear, and they also lead tours, offer lessons and give combo yoga/SUP classes.

Have a drink at one of Wilmington’s best local hangouts

The Satellite Bar and Lounge hits all the right notes when it comes to nightlife. There’s always something on whether it’s DJs spinning danceable indie grooves on vinyl or live bluegrass bands holding court (most Sundays). The big outdoor terrace is a dog-friendly spot to play a few games of cornhole or sip a craft brew and watch the evening unfold.

Browse for gift ideas at the City Market Shops

When you’re looking for the best shopping in Wilmington, bypass the mall and head to an 1880s building near the waterfront. You’ll find artwork, housewares and organic bath and body products and many edible temptations. The North Carolina Country Store sells quality jams, specialty coffee, hot sauces and other items created by North Carolina disabled artisans.

A view down the street at night of the Front Street Brewery sign in Wilmington, North Carolina

Taste some of Wilmington’s best craft beer at Front Street Brewery

Going strong since 1995, Front Street Brewery remains a pillar of the craft brewing scene. Brewmasters here have racked up over 100 awards over the years, which is no surprise once you taste its flagship German-style lager or the best-selling Port City IPA (a bold, citrusy combination of west coast and New England styles).

Enjoy unfussy drinks and a great crowd at the best dive bar in Wilmington

A great place to start (or end the night), Lula’s A Pub is a basement dive with a heart of gold. Expect well-made classic drinks (go for the old-fashioned), feel-good rock anthems and a cozy low-lit interior that makes for an atmospheric watering hole. The challenge of finding the place only adds to the appeal.

Tour the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Wilmington, head over to the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden. Located behind an elementary school, this small wetlands park is home to Venus flytraps, sundews and other carnivorous plants. Come in the spring for the best chance to see the flora in action.

Beaches, Boardwalk and Beyond: 6 Ways to Enjoy Wilmington, NC, and Island Beaches

The fantastic beaches are just the beginning – enjoy all the Wilmington area has to offer with these insider tips.

Amid its charming historic riverfront district and  three island beaches , Wilmington is alive with adventure, activities and scenic beauty. Here are some insider tips to maximize your trip to this vibrant destination on the NC coast, recently named the South’s Best City on the Rise by Southern Living.

Carolina, Kure, Wrightsville: 3 Island Beaches Just Minutes Away

Family carrying beach supplies on beach access with ocean in background

Wilmington’s three island beaches – Carolina, Kure and Wrightsville – are just a 20- to 30-minute drive from downtown. RentABeachChair provides everything you need for a great day at Carolina Beach, where the lively and historic Carolina Beach Boardwalk leads to all sorts of fun in the sun. In Wrightsville Beach, Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier extends more than 1,200 feet into the Atlantic Ocean, offering a tackle shop and seasonal snack bar – all with stunning panoramic views. For a more family-focused pier day, the nearby 100-year-old Kure Beach Fishing Pier is a favorite with its arcade, ice cream and more spectacular ocean views perfect for a family picture.

Outdoor Parks, Trails and Gardens

Large Airlie Oak tree surrounded by bright plants and flowers

Something is always in bloom at the 67-acre Airlie Gardens , home to the almost 500-year-old Airlie Oak, 75,000 azaleas, art installations and more. New Hanover County Arboretum offers another feast for your eyes and your spirit, with a koi water garden and authentic tea house situated among a host of Japanese maples. And speaking of feasting, each May, the carnivorous Venus flytraps bloom in Carolina Beach State Park among 50-foot sand dunes and prime spots for fishing, boating, camping, hiking and biking. Don’t miss the magic at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area , where loggerhead turtles and piping plovers nest along 6 miles of protected shoreline. Outside of downtown, Cameron Art Museum hosts rotating exhibits and performances, and its United States Colored Troops (USCT) Park is the only park in the nation built to honor the United States Colored Troops and their fight for freedom.

Area Wildlife and Ecoadventures

Take in local history at the seaside Fort Fisher State Historic Site , currently undergoing renovations to upgrade and expand the visitors center, slated for completion this summer. Venture just down the road at low tide, where the rare coquina rock formation cemented together by seashells and coral dates back possibly 80,000 years. And check out one of the exhibits at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher , including a family of Asian otters. Make your way by ferry – or paddle – from Wrightsville Beach to Masonboro Island Reserve , southern North Carolina’s longest undisturbed barrier-island ecosystem. The reserve’s salt marshes and tidal creeks house an array of birds, fish, sea turtles and more, with ample opportunities for long-term research, education and stewardship.

Tours and Cruises

Story lovers can learn about Wilmington’s history aboard a Springbrook Farms carriage, drawn by rescued Percheron draft horses, through the National Register Historic District. The history lessons continue aboard the Henrietta or Captain J.N. Maffit, offering daily Cape Fear Riverboats sightseeing cruises, as well as sunset and nature cruises. In Carolina Beach, join Tasting History Tours to see, sip and savor your way through some of the area’s best restaurants and bars, or hop on two wheels during a new e-bike tour to learn about the island’s history while enjoying local fare and beverages. With Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours , explore the area’s various waterways on a family-favorite pirate and treasure hunt cruise, or with Wilmington Outdoor Adventures' new Waterloop Tour. Film buffs can follow a printable guide to the filming sites of more than 60 movies and television shows; there’s a reason Wilmington’s nickname is “Hollywood East.”

Surf, Sail and Scuba

Salty Ventures and Island Cruises offer trips above the water, while Carolina Beach Scuba , Aquatic Safaris or WB Diving can take you below.

Wilmington, North Carolina, Is The South's Best City On The Rise

Hollywood has been reveling in the wonders of Wilmington, North Carolina, for decades. It’s time we follow suit.

visit wilmington nc

Day 1: City Wanderings

Day 2: call of the wild, day 3: by land and sea.

LISA CORSON

Like a seasoned character actor, Wilmington has always excelled at playing its part—but not just any part, every part.

Situated between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean, the city has spent decades transforming into whatever setting it has needed to be. In the late 1990s, it became an idyllic Cape Cod village for the teen drama Dawson’s Creek , and then it mimicked Los Angeles for Iron Man 3 . Nicknamed Wilmywood, Wilmington has long been revered by Hollywood for its mild temperatures and versatility—and recently travelers have begun to take note.

Want a less crowded spring break escape ? Its beaches are at your service. Seeking a charismatic riverfront city? Wilmington’s scenic Riverwalk and majestic live oaks rival those of Savannah . When it comes to the attributes of a great vacation town, it lacks for nothing—and that’s precisely why readers named it their top pick for the 2024 South’s Best Cities on the Rise .

If Wilmington has been whiling away its days as a talented but underappreciated character actor, then this is the year it finally gets the proper credit. Last spring, I spent a few days getting to know the long-overdue lead and brought along my older brother, Cyrus, for the grown-up sibling trip we never knew we needed. Cyrus (a devout urbanite) and I (someone who wilts when away from the mountains or ocean for too long) each found our own reasons to love the city. I realized my lifelong dream of surfing (if only for a few seconds), and he relished every bite of the best gluten-free pizza he’d ever had. We both discovered the beauty of a sunset boat ride and vowed to make a return trip with our mom .

My brother and I might have different travel preferences, but one thing we’ve always agreed on is food. So, upon arriving in Wilmington, our first stop was the Thaiand-Vietnamese restaurant Indochine . On the eatery’s social media-famous garden patio, every detail—from the live bamboo and brightly painted rickshaw carts to the paper lanterns and burbling koi pond stocked with tangerine-colored fish—echoed my most recent visit to Southeast Asia. I slurped up a steaming bowl of Thai Khao Xoi (yellow curry-coconut soup with chicken and noodles) that was just $13 on the lunch menu, while Cyrus opted for Vietnamese pho. We agreed that both dishes would earn the praise of our mom, who’s notorious for her harsh but fair restaurant judgment.

With time to spare before checking into our hotel, we decided to explore the Cargo District, an up-and-coming live-work-play development composed almost entirely of recycled shipping containers. Inside the industrial boxes, you’ll find coastal-cool clothing at Auggie & Zo , handmade toiletries and candles at Salty Soap Co. , and exotic greenery at The Plant Outpost , among other shops. Crafted Outpost hosts a rotating selection of goods from local makers, and The Fuzzy Needle stocks “records, books, and other ephemera.”

When we were ready for afternoon refreshments, the district overprovided. We powered up with iced matcha lattes at Blue Cup Roastery but also considered pints at Alcove Beer Garden next door, where containers stacked like Tetris blocks create plenty of cozy corners to duck into. After a little more shopping, we took a tour of End of Days Distillery , a pandemic-born facility that’s known for its award-winning gin, craft cocktails, and trendy tasting room.

Not five minutes from the artsy Cargo District, Wilmington’s historic downtown has a personality all its own. We rolled down a redbrick residential street, passing a parade of picturesque Queen Anne homes, until we stopped in front of our stay, Dreamers by DW . The inn is in a 134-year-old Victorian home, but nothing about the eco-friendly and design-focused bed-and-breakfast seems dated. The front yard is filled with a mix of native and tropical plants, providing a shady oasis where I spent languid afternoons lounging on a hammock in the corner of the expansive porch. Inside, the decor is modern and minimal, but every accent is intentional. A blush velvet sofa in the sitting room, custom dried-flower art, and a striking shade of deep blue covering the walls in the third-floor bedroom—each detail is dreamier than the last.

After freshening up, we walked the few blocks to Wilmington’s downtown. It was the weekend of the annual Azalea Festival (April 2 through 6 next year), so the atmosphere was particularly jovial. Waterfront seafood spots, ice-cream shops, and plenty of benches punctuate the Riverwalk, a 1.75-mile-long boardwalk on the Cape Fear River where you can stop and watch the boats dock.

 LISA CORSON

Dinner that night was at Seabird , a labor of love from two-time James Beard Award-nominated chef Dean Neff. The restaurant celebrates the North Carolina shore through inventive dishes that utilize fresh catches from area fishermen and coastal foragers. Although the nautical-inspired dining room presents as relaxed but refined, the idea was never to gatekeep. In addition to being open for dinner, Seabird also offers coffee and counter-service pastries most days and hosts a weekly happy hour when local oysters are sold for $1 each. We sampled the menu, from the fall-off-the-bone Carolina Reaper Sorghum Pork Ribs to the surprisingly light Swordfish Schnitzel, but the showstopper was the Seasonal Seafood Tower. There were a few familiar flavors like Southern pickled shrimp and firecracker saltines, though the real delight was in unexpected combos like smoked tuna with harissa aïoli and clams served on the half shell with a chili-and-fresh herb vinaigrette.

After a day spent pounding the pavement, I woke up the next morning more than ready for the salty waves and soft sands of the Wilmington shore. At wild Kure Beach (pronounced CURE-ee), we braved the impending storms to take a drizzly walk along the 711-foot Kure Beach Fishing Pier. Nearby Fort Fisher State Recreation Area features about 5 miles of protected, undeveloped shoreline plus primitive trails that snake through marshland and pass by an abandoned WWII bunker.

As with most coastal weather, the storms were temperamental and fleeting, so by the time we arrived in the town of Carolina Beach, the sun was peeking out and the only vestiges of the morning’s rocky start were a few lingering clouds. This was the day I would finally achieve my goal of learning to surf. As a perennial overachiever, I had high hopes for my performance, so who better to help me reach my potential than decorated professional Tony Silvagni ? He runs a surf school (under his name) out of Carolina Beach, where in addition to offering individual lessons and weeklong camps he also rents out chairs, umbrellas, surfboards, kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes.

I shimmied into a wet suit and strode into the water ready to hang ten. Unfortunately, the ocean had different plans for me. Despite my capable instructor’s best efforts, I spent most of the next hour doing little more than getting walloped by waves and working up a deep soreness in my shoulders. In my five attempts to stand up, I managed to string together two seconds only once, but it was more than enough. The exhilaration of ever so briefly catching a wave was electric.

I left buzzing with excitement until my brother teased me into submission. By the time we reached the Ferris wheel and carnival games of Carolina Beach’s old-school boardwalk, my ego was bruised and my stomach was grumbling. We followed the smell (and long line of people) to Britt’s Donut Shop , a cash-only institution where they’ve been making classic glazed donuts to order since 1939. I camped out at the wraparound counter and watched teenagers flip golden brown rounds in a steel drum fryer until at last my name was called. Inside an unremarkable white paper bag, I beheld pastry gold—impossibly light yeast doughnuts enrobed in just the right amount of still-hardening glaze.

If day one was Cyrus’ ideal itinerary, day two was mine. Our next nature-centered adventure brought us to Carolina Beach State Park , a portion of Pleasure Island that includes miles of wetland trails, a marina, a campground, and a storied 50-foot sand dune. While there’s plenty to explore in the park, my main reason for visiting was to see a Venus flytrap. Carolina Beach State Park is one of only a few places in the U.S. where the carnivorous plants grow in the wild. The easiest way to see them is to join a ranger-led tour (at 10 a.m. on Saturdays in the warmer months), but if you venture out on your own, check the edges of the Flytrap Trail and look closely; most of the plant’s identifiable “toothed” traps are only about an inch long.

With my outdoor cravings satiated, we spent the evening in the funky South Front District. Warehouses and old buildings have been converted into swanky wine bars, walk-up taco stands, and eclectic hangouts such as Satellite Bar & Lounge , a tavern where taxidermy, vintage couches, and a wide selection of craft brews bring in a diverse crowd. Across the street is Benny’s Big Time Pizzeria , an Italian restaurant from Vivian Howard , star of the PBS shows A Chef’s Life and Somewhere South . Order a wood-fired pie, but don’t ignore the house-made pasta or the best-selling Southern Fried Chicken Parm appetizer either. The bite-size nuggets are topped with hot honey, Parmesan, and pickled peppers and served in a pool of creamy, salty stracciatella.

Wilmington’s biggest strength is that it has a little something for everyone, so we used our last day here to check off a few of the city’s top hits, starting with breakfast burritos and banana bread inside sunny Drift Coffee & Kitchen . We followed up with a stroll around Airlie Gardens , the gorgeous grounds where movies such as Nicholas Sparks’ The Choice were filmed. I felt small standing under the generous arms of the 500-year-old Airlie Oak and marveled at the patchwork facade of the Bottle Chapel. Airlie Gardens is also the best place to see the city’s collection of blush and hot pink azalea blooms every spring. We logged our final Wilmington seashore by spending the afternoon at resort-friendly Wrightsville Beach , where we watched surfers tackle the waves, and then meandered through the vibrant downtown and historic square.

Beach vibes were high—and so were our spirits—as we embarked on our last adventures of the trip: an early dinner at the Panamanian restaurant Ceviche’s and a sunset boat cruise with Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours . As we rode around the Intracoastal Waterway, I sipped a canned cocktail from our earlier visit to End of Days Distillery, felt the wind blow through my hair, and witnessed the sky change from fiery orange to a more docile periwinkle. Along the way, our captain pointed out various islands and birds. The thought that the night couldn’t get any more perfect had just crossed my mind when, right on cue, a dolphin crested the surface of a wave, revealing his friendly fin. Now that’s movie magic.

Why Go To Wilmington, NC

Wilmington, North Carolina, is one of the South's best kept secrets. Founded in the 1730s, Wilmington's past tells a story of ascension and decline: It was a major shipping port and the state's largest city by the mid-19th century. And as such, its historic center brims with gorgeous old homes and gardens. After a period of decline, Wilmington has risen again, thanks in part to the University of North Carolina Wilmington's youthful energy and the burgeoning film and TV industry: In fact, the city is known as "Hollywood East" for its large production studio and the number of movies and shows that have been filmed here, including "Dawson's Creek," "One Tree Hill" and "Iron Man 3." But along with its historic attractions and Hollywood appeal, Wilmington is beloved by visitors for its relaxed beachy vibe, its slow Southern gait and its swelling foodie scene.

16 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Wilmington, NC

Written by Lana Law and Meagan Drillinger Updated Jun 14, 2024 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Not as well-known to tourists as its southern sister cities of Charleston and Savannah, Wilmington, North Carolina has its own charming historic district of fine old homes and mercantile blocks. The revitalized downtown and lovely riverfront have become a center for dining, shopping, entertainment, and the arts.

The city's most attention-grabbing attraction — it's hard to miss — is the immense Battleship North Carolina , a WWII-era warship that is open to tour. Wilmington's port, sheltered on Cape Fear River, gained prosperity by shipping petroleum and pulp products, and this coast played an important part in Civil War history. Today, however, Wilmington's Fort Fisher is better known for the beautiful white beaches of the state park that surrounds it.

The Riverwalk on Wilmington's waterfront

In Wilmington and the surrounding area, you can visit historic plantations and homes, including Bellamy House, Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens , and Poplar Grove Plantation.

While Wilmington is deeply rooted in American history — the evidence of which we can still see to this day — it is a decidedly modern city, with high-end hotels, restaurants, shopping, and activities that will please any 21st-century traveler. Although, a quick turn down any corner can have you stepping back in time to the days before the Civil War.

Whether you're traveling with your whole family or looking for a romantic getaway for two, you'll find plenty of things to do in Wilmington.

For more ideas on places to visit, read our list of the top tourist attractions in Wilmington.

Battleship North Carolina from the SECU Memorial Walkway

Commissioned on April 9, 1941, Battleship North Carolina was the first of 10 battleships to join the American fleet in World War II. During her service, the North Carolina carried 144 commissioned Navy officers, 2,195 enlisted men, and about 100 marines. Their stories and their lives on board the ship are much of the focus of the exhibits you'll see as you explore the nine levels of the ship, illustrated by photographs and artifacts, along with recorded oral histories.

One of the ship's attractions, especially for visiting children, is its accessibility. They can climb into the sailors' bunks, go into the massive engine room, plan strategies in the Combat Information Center, and take aim from behind the great guns (these include nine 16-inch, 45-caliber guns in three turrets and 20 five-inch, 38-caliber guns in 10 twin mounts).

The Hull of Battleship North Carolina

The battleship also hosts a variety of events on the weekends, including re-enactments with living history interpreters and special behind-the-scenes tours that take visitors to areas not usually open to the public.

If you don't want to tour the ship, you can simply walk on the SECU Memorial Walkway , a raised boardwalk that goes all the way around the outside of the ship. It runs through a pleasant natural area and provides excellent views of the ship. It's free to the public and is a good alternative if you don't have enough time to tour the interior.

From the Riverwalk you can see the ship docked on the opposite side of the river and a water taxi makes scheduled runs over to the ship.

The Riverwalk in Wilmington

One of the favorite - and free - things to do in Wilmington is a stroll along the Riverwalk that borders the Cape Fear River. This mile-long boardwalk offers river views as well as access to historic buildings, shopping, dining, and arts venues.

Looking across the river you can see the Battleship North Carolina. If you want to visit without having to drive all the way around, you can hop on the Bizzy Bee Water Taxi Service (the only water taxi service in Wilmington), which will take you across to near where the ship is docked.

A water taxi docked near the Battleship North Carolina and downtown Wilmington across the river

Along its route are the shops of the Cotton Exchange , launching places for boat tours of the river, public artworks, cafes, shops, restaurants with riverside terraces, and benches for relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Events enliven the Riverwalk year-round, including the Saturday morning Farmers Market in the summer, the annual Riverfest, and performances by local musicians and entertainers.

View along the River Walk

The walkway runs for nearly two miles, stretching from Nunn Street to the Isabella Holmes Bridge. For one of the best views of the river, be sure to stop at Conlon Pier . If you like to fish, this is the only spot along the riverwalk where you can cast, as well.

Wilmington's Riverfront

Downtown Wilmington is home to the state's largest National Register Historic District, which includes hundreds of 19th- and early 20th-century buildings. Along with historic homes are vintage mercantile blocks, where local restaurants serve up tasty seafood, and the shops stock everything from antiques to trendy fashions.

During the warmer months, there are frequent events downtown, including gallery walks, live music, and festivals.

5th Street in Downtown Wilmington's Historic District

As well as attractions such as the Cape Fear Museum , the Children's Museum of Wilmington , and the view from the waterfront of the Battleship North Carolina , several streets are lined with beautiful old homes, many with their fascinating histories related on signs. Look for plaques on the houses as you wander by.

There are several ways to enjoy the area: you can stroll its streets and browse in its shops on your own, join a walking tour, take an informative trolley tour, or ride through the historic streets in a horse-drawn carriage.

The 2,700-square-foot open-air butterfly house, open May 15 to October 15, is alive with hundreds of native North Carolina butterflies, including monarchs and giant swallowtails.

Bellamy Mansion

Bellamy Mansion, a pre-Civil War structure, is regarded as one of North Carolina's most spectacular historic antebellum homes. Enslaved people and free black artisans built the antebellum structure for physician, planter, and business leader John Dillard Bellamy, who lived here with his wife Eliza and their children. As you tour, their stories will unfold, along with those of their slaves, whose restored quarters are among the few to exist from urban households.

Throughout its 150-year history, the house has survived the Civil War, being commandeered by Federal troops after the fall of Fort Fisher, a state of disrepair, and a devastating fire. Outside, the recreated Victorian gardens are shaded by a magnolia tree that is 150 years old.

Founded to house collections of Confederate objects and mementos, the Cape Fear Museum has expanded over the years to hold more than 52,000 items relating to regional, national, and international history, as well as culture and science.

The museum has a special focus on the environment of the Lower Cape Fear, and the Michael Jordan Discovery Gallery brings that to children with creative, hands-on exhibits that allow kids to interact with nature by using their senses. Here, they can feed insects to carnivorous plants and crawl inside a beaver lodge.

Sculpture at the Cape Fear Museum

The museum spills outdoors into its adjacent park, where interactive exhibits invite people to consider how they relate to the land and water around them. Gardens of native plants, activities, and hands-on exhibits in this area are always free.

Wilmington Railroad Museum

Preserving an industry vital to the city for well over a century, this museum features exhibits on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad. At its height in the 1840s, the railroad was the world's longest continuous rail line, stretching 161 miles. At the end of the century, it merged with other East Coast companies to create the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.

Exhibits trace the growth of railways in Wilmington and explore the contributions of Thomas Edison, George Pullman, and others. Nearly two dozen model trains travel through miniature towns and countryside, and the museum includes rolling stock and a century-old steam locomotive. Kids will like the train-themed play area.

Poplar Grove Plantation

One of the oldest peanut plantations in North Carolina, Poplar Grove Plantation encompasses more than 15 acres and the house and outbuildings were constructed for Joseph Mumford Foy in 1850. Exhibits explore the skilled construction and finish work of the three-story house by Foy family slaves, using pine, black walnut, and other materials available on the plantation.

Six generations of the Foy family owned the historic house until 1971, and on the plantation is the last remaining tenant house, occupied until the 1960s by a descendent of the Foy family's slaves. Also part of the plantation are the original smokehouse, a blacksmith shop, and agricultural exhibits on the production of peanuts.

Climbing roses in a Wilmington Garden

Only three local houses have survived since the colonial area, and the Burgwin-Wright House is the only one open for public tours. Built in 1770, the home features Georgian architecture, 18th- and 19th-century antiques and household goods, and a separate kitchen house furnished with period utensils. Guided tours are available, and the grounds can also be rented for private events.

Alden Hopkins and Donald Parker, two of Colonial Williamsburg's renowned landscape architects , designed the lush gardens on the property. Covering more than half an acre, these include two terraced gardens; a rose garden; kitchen and medicinal gardens; and an orchard with pomegranate, fig, and espaliered crabapple trees. Entrance to the gardens is free.

Selections from the museum's permanent collection of fine arts, decorative arts, and design by local, national, and international artists include a large number of works on paper by artists that include Mary Cassatt and Ando Hiroshige. Art from these collections is not on permanent display, but the works are presented in rotating themed exhibits. Collections are especially strong in works by North Carolina artists.

The museum also hosts interactive family and children's programs, including music, film, literature, dance, and other arts.

An art studio provides inspiration and materials for drawing, painting, sculpture, weaving, and other arts. Toddlers can climb and slide safely in the Tree House, and in the grocery store, kids can fill their shopping carts and play cashier at the check-out register.

One Weekend In Wilmington: A 3-day Wilmington Itinerary

Wilmington is easily one of the most beautiful cities on the North Carolina coast but is often forgotten by many travelers. It is a superb place for relaxing and learning about history, with a peaceful atmosphere with idyllic beaches, hiking trails, marshlands, and enough history to be the first-ever American World War II Heritage Site. This weekend guide to Wilmington will showcase all the best features this city has to offer, plus all the insider tips.

How do I get to Wilmington?

To get to Wilmington, visitors have the option to drive themselves, which is a gorgeous drive once off the highways, or fly. Wilmington International Airport (ILM), is just outside of the city and is the closest and most convenient by far. Once arrived, visitors can take a cab, take the Wave Bus 207, or rent a car to drive the downtown area.

Tip!! Use the DiscoverCars search engine to find the best deals on rental cars in Wilmington!

What is the best time to visit Wilmington?

Wilmington is best enjoyed with good weather conditions. March-May and September-November are when rates are usually at the lowest, and temperatures aren’t as humid. Summertime is considered the high season, which brings the most crowds and hottest temperatures.

While Wilmington is in the southern part of the country, visiting during the winter months may bring a damper to your trip due to colder weather conditions. Winters in North Carolina can often be frigid.

Where should I stay in Wilmington?

When visiting North Carolina, there are 2 main choices for accommodation: downtown or beachfront.

If you want a more peaceful or relaxed vibe, staying at Wrightsville beach is your best option. There are various guesthouses and hotels all up the coast, such as the Blockade Runner Beach Resort .

Or you can stay downtown and have easier access to transport and locations within the city. Visitors can even opt to stay waterfront here by the riverwalk at the Embassy Suites Wilmington Riverfront Hotel , boasting a rooftop bar and free breakfast.

Sample 3-Day Wilmington Weekend Itinerary

Day 1 in wilmington:.

sunrise at Masonboro island reserve

Start your weekend in Wilmington by hopping on a boat to Masonboro Island Reserve , which is only 5 miles away. This is a great start to the day as you are surrounded by nature and flourishing plants and wildlife. Walk around, take it all in, and see how many different animals you can spot.

Head back to the mainland, straight to Wrightsville Beach. The most popular beach in the Wilmington area is the ideal place to spend the afternoon. Eat some lunch at one of the various beachfront restaurants, and then take a dip in the ocean and kick back for a while.

After a peaceful day filled with nature and outdoor activities, spend the night out in Wilmington at the Mayfaire Town Center . This is one of the top places to spend an evening, as there is a movie theater, wonderful places to eat, and many stores to make your shopping experience just a little better than usual.

Day 2 in Wilmington:

Kure Beach in Wilmington North Carolina

Begin your second day in Wilmington at one of the top parks in all of North Carolina, Carolina Beach State Park. Head south and nature lovers will get the chance to see a real-life Venus Flytrap in the wild, which is uncommon in most state parks. Hiking options and swimming are available too, so there is something for everyone.

After your nature fix for the day, continue south to Kure Beach . As this beach is not as popular as the previous Wrightsville Beach, there will be less people, has beautiful views, and a pier. Eat some lunch at one of the various beachfront restaurants, and then take a dip in the ocean and kick back for a while.

Stay late on the beach to catch a beautiful sunset on the coastline, and then head back to downtown Wilmington. Plan ahead and make reservations at the Pork City Chop Hous e, one of the best steakhouses in the state. This is by far one of the greatest meals one can have in Wilmington. After dinner, most likely it will be ready for bed.

Day 3 in Wilmington:

Wilmington battleship and Riverwalk

First, grab a coffee to start your morning at Bitty & Beau’s. A cherished coffee house in Wilmington that helps promote and acknowledge people with disabilities . After spending a lot of time in nature, opt to go downtown for your final day in Wilmington. Start your morning by the seas at the USS North Carolina Battleship . This is one of the greatest Navy Vessels in the United States ever used, and is open for daily tours, inside and out; it’s definitely an impressive site!

Next, head over to the Wilmington Riverwalk . There are a lot of great things to see, and free things as well that one can take part in all afternoon here. Walk the Riverwalk itself, and try out the different attractions all around. You never know what you might see. There are various restaurants and cafes all around the area as well to eat lunch or take a rest.

A visit to Wilmington isn’t complete without a night spent in the Historic District. Learn about real American history and discover the historic roots of the city, see vintage homes, and churches that are still in fabulous shape for their age. You can even take a tour through the district on a carriage or trolley. There are various restaurants and shops throughout the area, so don’t forget any souvenirs you may want to take home.

Looking to add a little competition into your last night in Wilmington?! Try a scavenger hunt around the city.

Best of Wilmington NC on an Overnight Visit from Raleigh

W hen we were planning for my parents’ recent three week visit from Australia, a requested experience from them was to visit Wilmington.

We passed through here for a day over a decade ago on our East Coast Road trip from Williamsburg Virginia to Savannah, Georgia, and they loved the feel of the small, historic North Carolina town on the Cape Fear River and wanted to explore it a little deeper.

For their visit this time, we were focused on showcasing the best of Raleigh, including the areas we have easy access to visit on a day trip or quick getaway.

Wilmington is of course one of the best destinations we have easy access to in Raleigh. This charming coastal city offers a perfect blend of history, natural beauty, and modern amenities. And we think nearby Wrightsville Beach is one of the best beach towns in the USA (and we’ve been to a lot!!)

Our multi-generational two-day trip to Wilmington was a delightful journey of experiencing the city’s highlights at a leisurely pace, ensuring that everyone enjoyed the trip without feeling rushed. You can check out our things to do in the Wilmington guide for more options for your trip if needed.

Day 1: Exploring Downtown Wilmington

We left Raleigh around 8am for a mid-morning arrival in Wilmington. We wanted to have two full days to explore the area, which meant we only needed to stay one night.

The drive from Raleigh is around two hours depending on traffic and where in Raleigh you are coming from.

Coffee at Bespoke Coffee & Dry Goods

Our first stop was Bespoke Coffee & Dry Goods , a cozy café known for its artisanal coffee and welcoming atmosphere.

Bespoke is our normal coffee stop when visiting Wilmington and my parents loved its classy and welcoming interior that also had a kind of pirate vibe.

It was a nice slow start to the morning with delicious expertly crafted lattes and cappuccinos, and gluten free donuts!

Tour of Battleship North Carolina

If you’re traveling to Wilmington with older generations, I am certain they will want to visit Battleship North Carolina. While my dad was only a baby during World War 2, it was still close enough to home that it impacted the lives of those around him. Visiting one of Wilmington’s most iconic attractions only deepened my parents’ understanding of this time in history.

The Battleship North Carolina was one of the first of ten battleships to join the American fleet in WWII. It was considered the world’s greatest navy ship, and it participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations and earned 15 battle stars.

This World War II battleship turned museum offered a fascinating glimpse into naval history. You can tour 9 different levels and arrows guide you along the self-guided tour . As we explored the ship, my parents shared stories and memories of the era, providing a personal connection to the historical artifacts.

But it’s not just for older generations. Craig and I really love the Battleship as did both of our girls, making it a perfect multi-generational experience in Wilmington.

We were intrigued by the ship’s massive size and the opportunity to explore its many levels and compartments. We all decided that if we had to choose, we’d be in the army. Living in those cramped, hot quarters under the deck, is just not what we’re made of!

Lunch at Anne Bonny’s Bar and Grill

I had no plans for lunch in Wilmington, which was great as it meant we kind of just walked past Anne Bonny’s and said, “let’s go in here.”

You couldn’t get any better views since it’s a floating restaurant on the Cape Fear River. It was casual and affordable with a diverse menu for all tastes.

The open air, yet shady restaurant allowed us to enjoy the warm weather without baking and we had beautiful views out to the battleship from where we just came.

My new smartphone, which my father was thrilled to find confirms his suspicions with a quick google search that Anne Bonny was in fact a real pirate lady!

He and Mum were even more thrilled when an alligator popped its head out from behind the pier legs to say G’day. It was their first time seeing an alligator in the wild and our first time seeing one in Wilmington!

The food was just as good – in fact, my mum said her grilled chicken salad was the best meal of her entire three-week trip. My chicken wings were also tender and delicious. Dad loved his hot dog

Anne Bonny’s is a really great place to eat in Wilmington.

Horse and Carriage Tour of the Historic District

This is an easy tour in Wilmington to enjoy with travelers of all ages. Pull up a seat in the carriage and let the knowledgeable guide and a pair of rescued Amish horses take you around Wilmington’s Historic District.

This guided tour provided a relaxing way to learn about the city’s history and architecture through intriguing stories about Wilmington’s past. You’ll see many homes that are over 100 years old – signified by a black plaque.

If you were wise enough 30 years ago, you could have bought a home here for around 30K, which I’m sure you’ve figured out is worth a lot more than that now!

They do not accept reservations as they run tours dependent on how the horses are feeling and what the weather is doing. Check their Facebook page to see current times. Turn up on Market St near the riverfront for the tour. We’ve never had a problem getting on.

If you’re wondering about the wellbeing of the horses, the horses are well looked after, ours were two rescue horses from Amish County in Philadelphia. The tour company, Springbrook Farms has saved 18 draft horses in their 35 years of business.

Ice Cream at Kilwins

After Dad enjoyed the biggest ice cream of his life at Kilwins in North Hills, he was easily lured off the horse and carriage by the smell of those waffle cones at Kilwins on Market St in Wilmington.

And surprisingly he ordered the large again!! It’s just that good. BTW an Australian large is probably equivalent to an American small.

Check-In at Embassy Suites by Hilton Wilmington Riverfront

As the day wound down, we checked into our hotel, the Embassy Suites by Hilton Wilmington Riverfront . This was our third stay at this Wilmington Hotel. The spacious suites and modern amenities provided a comfortable and convenient base for our stay.  Having interconnecting rooms with mum and dad made it easy for our group to communicate and gather around the TV to see who won the US Open Golf Championship.

The hotel’s location, right on the riverfront, offered stunning views and easy access to the city’s attractions. It was great to see Battleship North Carolina outside our suite window.

You have time to enjoy the free reception drinks put on by the hotel each afternoon from 5-7pm. It includes two drinks per person and an array of light snacks. There is also the Cloud9 Rooftop Bar, which is perfect for a pre-dinner or after-dinner drink.

Click to read our full review of Embassy Suites by Hilton Wilmington Riverfront

If you want a more boutique hotel with a more local feel, check out Front St Inn or The Verandas bed and breakfast .

Sunset Dinner at The Pilot House

We visited Wilmington on Father’s Day, so I had reserved a special dinner at the Pilot House , a waterfront restaurant known for its fresh seafood and Southern cuisine.

Thanks to our hotel’s location we could enjoy a leisurely walk along the riverfront to the restaurant and then home again.

Dining on the Wilmington riverfront is one of my favorite things to do because of the serene river views, a gentle, yet happy ambiance, and the most beautiful views of the sunset painted the sky with hues of orange and pink

As my dad said, when we asked them to share their favorites on their final day, “That incredible steak dinner at the Pilot House with that sun setting was a certain kind of magic I’ll never forget.”

It was a perfect ending to our first day in Wilmington.

Day 2: Beachside Relaxation and Nature’s Beauty

Breakfast at the hotel or the basics.

It’s hard to walk past complimentary breakfast. If you see most free breakfasts in chain hotels, it’s advised to keep walking past.

Not at the Embassy Suites. They have a complimentary breakfast buffet with a wide range of options, including made-to-order omelets and a special dish of the day. On our visit it was a delicious avocado toast (but not gluten free, else I would have ordered it.)

There’ll be something for everyone in your group from pancakes, porridge, bacon eggs, pastries, and fresh fruit.

PLUS, you get panoramic views of the Cape Fear River.

However, I also know how much you may want to experience more of a local breakfast. We recommend brunch at The Basics. Be warned, lines can be long, so get here early. You can book a table 12 hours or more in advance. Drift Kitchen is another great option for light fare.

Morning Walk and Shopping in Wilmington

After breakfast, we set out for a morning walk along the riverfront into Downtown Wilmington.

Shopping was on mum’s list of things to do in Downtown Wilmington so she could take home souvenirs for herself and loved ones back home.

Wander along Market and Front Street in the historic district for a fun mix of coastal décor, contemporary fashion, vintage accessories, gifts stores and homemade stores.

The Old Wilmington City Market, a historic landmark and retail destination since 1880, continues that tradition with a variety of specialty shops and art galleries in an old one-story building with beautiful lofty ceilings and glass skylights. We loved Barouke, a woodcrafters gallery shop, and the eclectic City Gypsy Boutique.

The Cotton Exchange is another favorite small shopping area off Front St. It’s housed within eight restored buildings connected by brick walkways and an open-air courtyard giving a 19th Century Port City vibe from when Cotton was King.

I like the small stores we found in the Hallway Shops as well. There was a gorgeous East African store there with beautiful clothes, gifts, and home décor. And on Market St, Raleighites might recognize Edge of Urge, a favorite local store in North Person St district,

Coffee at Drift Coffee & Kitchen

We often stop in at Drift Coffee in Ocean Isle Beach for morning coffee and had only a few days before tried the new Drift Coffee & Kitchen in Raleigh (and LOVED it), so of course, we planned a coffee stop at their location on Front St, Downtown Wilmington.

Drift is known for excellent coffee (verified by four Australian coffee snobs), and light bites. Their avocado toast and banana bread topped with ricotta, walnuts, and honey, are a must!

Now you’re ready to leave Downtown Wilmington and drive twenty minutes to one of the best places in this coastal region of North Carolina: Wrightsville Beach.

Visit to Airlie Gardens

On the way to the beach is the stunning 67-acre Airlie Gardens, which feature formal gardens, walking trails, seasonal blooms, centuries-old oak trees, artistic sculptures and peaceful waterways.

There is no forgetting the 400+ year old, 128ft high, Airlie Oak dripping with Spanish moss and its friends hanging around in the grove! It’s the largest Live Oak in North Carolina and another reminder why this area we live in is so special.

It was fun to watch my mum drop the Spanish moss she picked up from the ground as a “souvenir” faster than a hot potato when I screamed out “Lice!” They do like to make it their home!

There is an easy mile loop trail you can take around the gardens to see the garden highlights.

Apart from the Airlie Oak, don’t miss the

Bottle Chapel, the centerpiece of the Minnie Evans Sculpture Garden, a tribute to the late artist and gatekeeper at Airlie Gardens.

The chapel, the creation of Virginia Wright-Frierson, is a mosaic style piece of art made from – you guessed it – thousands of colorful glass bottles glued together by cement.

Two apple trees frame the arched entryway, and a copper tree reaches up through the open ceiling. If you walk around the chapel, you’ll see a butterfly on one corner, and smaller bottle shapes such as maple leaves and fish.

The 2,700- square foot Butterfly House, home to native North Carolina butterflies. Spend time with them flying around their open-air structure.

The Pagoda Garden is also nice for views out of the lagoon, a bubbling fountain, trellis walkways, and weeping willows alongside the live oaks.

If you visit in Spring, they have 75,000 azaleas that bloom from mid-March through mid-April and in the summer, they have concerts in the garden. Check their website for events, opening times, and current entrance fees.

Lunch at Oceanic Restaurant, Wrightsville Beach

If you want to show off North Carolina beach life in all its glory, then lunch at the Oceanic Restaurant is a must do!

Situated right on Crystal Pier on Wrightsville beach, this restaurant offers breathtaking ocean views and delicious seafood dishes.

And it was a hit! Mum and Dad loved the food and the panoramic views of the ocean. We couldn’t have asked for a more sparkly day!

On our order was a. burger for Dad and Savannah, a grilled chicken salad from mum and I and shrimp one from Craig.

Considering this and its location, and the full-sized, full-flavored dishes, I found the Oceanic Restaurant well priced. And you can’t beat its beachside parking for diners!

Afternoon Swim at Wrightsville Beach

There was no way we were going home to Raleigh without having jumped in the ocean. Wrightsville Beach is known for its clean, sandy shores and clear waters, and as mentioned, it is our favorite beach in North Carolina , if not the entire USA.

It’s not just us that thinks so, our Australian parents also said – without prompting from us – that there was “ something special about this beach.”

Dad even put a Wilmington beach house at the top of his purchase list for when he wins the lotto. I’ll go you halves Dad as it’s been on the top of my list now for two decades!

Mum and Dad found a shady spot under the pier, while Craig, Savannah and I dove in. It was a little rippy, but the water was heavenly and much warmer than I was expecting from June. That swim alone was worth coming to Wilmington for an overnight stay.

Remember to swim between the flags for the lifeguard’s protective eyes and understand how rips work so you don’t get into trouble! Australian beaches are typically very rippy, so we grew up understanding them. You can get into serious trouble if you don’t.

Coffee at Sunnydays Cafe

Before heading back to Wilmington, we stopped at SUNdays Coffee Shop for a refreshing afternoon coffee.

This charming café, with its beachy décor and laid-back atmosphere, provided the perfect spot to unwind. We love the surfie vibe of this local spot located around the surf shop. Their acai bowls and smoothies here are also great.

With coffee in hand, we began our drive back to Raleigh, regretting that I did not book a room at the Blockade Runner so we could have a night by the beach and my parents could experience the beauty of a North Carolina sunrise right from their private balcony.

But we had a wonderful time together anyway that was a blend of relaxation, exploration, and family bonding.

Final Thoughts on our Overnight Getaway to Wilmington

Our two-day trip to Wilmington, North Carolina, was a perfect family retreat spent exploring historic sites, enjoying delicious meals, relaxing on the beach, and strolling through beautiful gardens.

The leisurely pace allowed us to enjoy each moment fully, making memories that we will cherish for years to come.

This is an easy itinerary for you to follow if you plan on visiting Wilmington for a night and want to combine a little of its top attractions, local highlights, and natural beauty at a leisurely pace. It’s particularly great if you are traveling with grandparents or kids as there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

What best of Wilmington would you add into an overnight stay?

First lady Jill Biden launches program for veterans and military families in Wilmington

visit wilmington nc

Greeted by applause and cheering from supporters, first lady Dr. Jill Biden used a visit to Wilmington this week to launch the Veterans and Military Families for Biden-Harris program.

She said four years ago her husband, President Joe Biden, went from being a military father to being commander in chief and that it’s a responsibility he took with pride.

“Joe reminds everyone any chance he gets, our U.S. military is the finest fighting military force in the history of the world,” Biden said in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Hi-Wire Brewing.

The first lady added that her husband believes that the one true sacred obligation is to prepare those our country sends into harm’s way and to care for them and their families when they come home.

She acknowledged that although military spouses and children may not wear the uniform, they serve the country too.

More: Scenes from first lady Dr. Jill Biden's visit to Wilmington

Among the list of work for veterans and military families is the president's signing of the PACT Act, which granted over 1 million claims to veterans seeking care after being impacted by toxic exposures. It was the most significant expansion of benefits for veterans in over 30 years, according to the Biden-Harris campaign.

In 2023 alone, the administration also delivered over $163 billion in earned benefits to 6.3 million veterans, according to the campaign.

At Monday's event, Biden acknowledged her husband's decision to end the war in Afghanistan because the sacrifice of military families was “too steep for too long.” The first lady also acknowledged the president’s expansion of reproductive healthcare.

“President Biden wakes up every morning ready to work for you,” Biden said.

The first lady took the stage at Hi-Wire Brewing just before noon, joined by Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and Jason Cain, former North Carolina assistant secretary for military affairs.

Saffo led the remarks with strong support of the Bidens and their work for military families.

“The Bidens know what it feels like to have a son fighting for their country,” Saffo said. “President Biden has spent his life helping those who have bravely served as well as their families.”

Saffo also acknowledged the importance that North Carolina voters play in the election.

“The path to the White House runs through North Carolina,” Saffo said.

Cain, a U.S. Army veteran, joined in support of the Biden-Harris administration’s program launch and introduced the first lady.

“I know firsthand the sacrifices and challenges that come with serving our country and the immense toll that it takes on our families,” Cain said.

The Bidens have dedicated their lives to championing the needs of those who have served and that they are a military family, he said.

Cain noted that Biden has expanded healthcare access to thousands of veterans across the state, has lowered veteran unemployment, helped service members cover the cost of childcare, helped veterans obtain affordable housing and made it easier for veterans and their families to find jobs.

The first lady said her husband will continue to fight for the military community. She noted that her father served in World War II and her son Beau served in the Delaware Army National Guard and then for a year in Iraq.

“This is personal to us,” Biden said.

The first lady also went on the defensive against Donald Trump. She drew attention to Donald Trump’s alleged comments about prisoners of war and those who died in war calling them “suckers” and “losers” and said that they were disgraceful, but not surprising.

“Donald Trump wakes up every morning thinking about one person and one person only, himself,” Biden said.

Biden said the country cannot trust Trump and that the military community deserves better, with a president that serves with integrity, wisdom and character, and that she believes that’s her husband.

Biden asked the audience to remember what it felt like the morning after the 2016 general election, when Trump won over Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party fell short.

“We can’t take anything for granted,” Biden said. “We have to meet this moment as if our freedoms are at risk because they are.”

Many local leaders gathered at Hi-Wire Brewing to hear Biden speak, including Democratic Rep. Deb Butler.

“People love Joe Biden for a reason,” Butler said. “He has implemented student loan forgiveness, he has preserved a woman's right to choose, he has endorsed same sex marriage. These are things that impact people's daily lives.”

Butler compared Jill Biden’s trip to Wilmington as a great opportunity for the Bidens to say thank you to those who have supported them because that is often forgotten in party politics.

Jill Biden returns to North Carolina to rally veterans, military families

WTVD logo

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Monday morning, President Biden shared a letter to Democrats on X, vowing to remain in the race, writing in part: "I wouldn't be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024."

Hours later, the First Lady addressed her husband's campaign.

"For all the talk out there about this race, Joe has made it clear that he's all in," said Dr. Biden, as the crowd began to chant "four more years."

Dr. Biden's visit to North Carolina comes as a growing number of Democrats have publicly expressed reservations on the President's electability, with a small group calling on him to step aside .

"What determines his re-election is what he's done in the last four years. And I think his record is impeccable and it speaks for itself. He's the only choice for the American people," said Sonya Patrick, a Biden supporter who attended Monday's rally in Wilmington.

Monday's event was planned for the launch of Veterans and Military Families for Biden-Harris , as the campaign hopes to reach the nearly 800,000 veterans who live in North Carolina.

"One thing that I've seen personally as a veteran that uses the VA for health care in the Veterans Administration has taken a turn for the better in the last four years. And that's something that I've been very impressed about," said Ian Appling, a Navy veteran who currently serves as Third Vice Chair of the New Hanover County Democratic Party.

"Four years ago, Joe went from being a military father to being Commander in Chief. It's a responsibility he stepped into with pride because, as Joe reminded everyone, any chance he gets - our U.S. military is the finest fighting military force in the history of the world," said Dr. Biden.

Speakers highlighted the administration's accomplishments in addressing the needs of veterans, including the passage of the PACT Act to efforts to address veterans' mental health.

"This is personal to us. We know what it's like to wait to connect on a lagging phone call from across the world to smile through another holiday with an empty chair at the table. Let me ask you this. Does Donald Trump?," said Dr. Biden.

The NCGOP shared pictures on X of a small group of volunteers in Wilmington Monday, waving flags and signs in support of Donald Trump. In a statement, NCGOP Communications Director Matt Mercer wrote:

"First Lady Jill Biden owes members of our military an apology after her husband lied when he said in front of 50 million Americans that no U.S. service members died 'on his watch.' That lie dishonors the soldiers killed at the Abbey Gate due to his disastrous and weak withdrawal from Afghanistan." "The Biden administration has lied, ignored the pain of those families' soldiers, and as we all know, has committed the coverup of the century with the president's own health. Those are the questions reporters should be getting answers to today."

President Biden carried New Hanover County in 2020, flipping it from red to blue, as the party has its sights set on winning the state for the first time since 2008. Biden visited Wilmington in May for an event to highlight work in replacing lead pipes and was in Raleigh less than two weeks ago for his first rally following the debate .

"The Biden campaign understands that North Carolina is a battleground (state) and we don't want to leave anybody behind. We don't want to take anybody for granted," said Rep. Deb Butler, a Democrat who represents New Hanover County.

Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to be in Greensboro later this week.

Amid questions and uncertainty about his future, Biden's Raleigh speech is heavily featured in his latest campaign ads. And a defiant Biden also appeared with ABC's George Stephanopoulos , making the case he's still up for the job at age 81. It's a case he will continue to have to make to the public.

"It's a situation that he has to demonstrate not just in selected clips or selected campaign appearance but over the course of the certainly the next month that he has the mental acuity to go head to head to head with (former President) Donald Trump in the campaign but also govern effectively as president of the United States," said Bob Orr.

Orr is a former North Carolina Supreme Court Justice who used to be a Republican but left the party over Trump. He said right now there's an ongoing debate among other so-called "Never Trumpers." He also said North Carolina's many unaffiliated voters will be paying close attention.

"I do think they're divided I think there's some who say hey Biden is the best choice, we're going to do everything we can do help, there are others saying we're not sure he can beat Trump," Orr said.

Orr says he will support the Democratic nominee no matter who it is because he believes Trump is unacceptable.

He said regardless of how things shake out the next few weeks, North Carolina is still very much a battleground state.

"I think it will be a close race for president here but it's still up for grabs," Orr said.

Another potential factor in a close race will be whether third parties including those representing Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Cornel West will be approved for the November ballot. A decision from the Board of Elections will be made at a meeting on July 9.
