BOOK NOW – FALSE BAY

Yes sharks, whales and dolphins – all in one tour! Take advantage of this fantastic limited introductory offer! This once-off all inclusive Big 5 Marine package, is offered by the longest established and most reliable shark cage diving company in the industry. White Shark Ventures were the pioneers and founders of the shark diving industry with a 29 year accident-free track record. Today we are proud to also add Whale- and Dolphin viewing tours to our portfolio.

Our Combo Tour (also known as the Big 5 Marine tour), therefore consists of the following;

1. GREAT WHITE SHARKS ; Although Gansbaai is known as the “Capital of the Great White Shark”, our tours also offer highly successful dives with Copper Sharks (Bronze Whalers) as well as large stingrays. Our Copper Sharks are fairly large in size and reach lengths of up to 3.5 metres. Same as the Great Whites, Copper Sharks are also inquisitive by nature and like to get up close and personal, right next to the boat and cage.

2. WHALES ; Walker Bay Hermanus/Gansbaai, is known as one of the 12 best whale watching destinations in the world. The best time to enjoy close-up whale viewing is between the months of June to December, when the Southern Right Whales migrate from the Antarctic to calve and mate along our coast. Brydes Whales and Humpback Whales are also often spotted.

3. DOLPHINS ; We have a large resident pod of Common Dolphins in our Bay and they can pretty much be seen all year round. These dolphins are playful and would often swim with the bow of the boat. We also often spot the Bottlenose Dolphin, which is a larger specie and are often seen surfing the waves.

4. CAPE FUR SEALS ; Geyser Rock has a huge population of around 60,000 Cape Fur Seals. The males weigh in at a hefty 200 – 300 kgs, while the females are a little smaller and weigh around 75 kgs. The females give birth between the middle of November and the end of December, when it is pupping season in “Shark Alley”, the narrow channel that runs between Geyser Rock and Dyer Island. Each female will only birth one pup.

5. AFRICAN PENGUINS ; Dyer Island hosts many bird species as well as a colony of African Penguins. Dyer Island used to be the most important breeding site for African penguins in the world, but currently they are struggling to breed successfully. The main reason for this is the historic removal of guano between 1840 and the mid-1900’s. Penguins on the Island in 1978 numbered 70 000 with about 27 000 breeding pairs. African penguins can swim up to 20km/hr, travel 20-40km in a day, and have been recorded at 180m depth!

Wow Just wow! Our original tour with a different company was cancelled due to bad weather but this experience was simply superb! The crew were all lovely and we saw so many sharks it was simply incredible.
Worth the Trip! Amazing experience! I was traveling with a family member with mobility issues and they were extremely accommodating. Tash, Tian and Jeff were all awesome and would gladly go again! We saw some 24 sharks and even whales on the trip, was a highlight experience
Best Experience! Amazing, professional, dedicated. Great team, who really sent the extra mile to ensure the best experience for all onboard. Highly recommended.
The experience was amazing. The staff knew their stuff. Lots of sharks. And service and food was above expectations. ???????????? From pick up to dive to drop back everything went smoothly. Was able to see heaps of sharks. And staff and crew were very helpful. Definitely would recommend for anyone who wants to see some sharks.
Safe and Secure! Super! That was an awesome experience! Make sure to get sea sickness medicine if you are weak for that… Safe and secure diving!
Birthday with the sharks. What a lovely way to celebrate my birthday! I was pleasant surprised by how well fed we were. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We felt safe at all times and we even got the opportunity to purchase an awesome video of the experience to as a keepsake. Definitely recommend this!
Shark Cage Dive. Amazing experience. Still felt safe. All the crew and team were very nice and welcoming. Highly recommended.
Great Experience! I thoroughly enjoyed this excursion just 2 hours outside Cape Town. Clint, our driver and excursion ambassador, exceeded expectations. His punctuality, friendliness, and detailed explanations heightened the overall experience. The shark cage diving, with a quick check-in, light breakfast, and insightful briefing, offered a fantastic encounter with bronze sharks. We even had two opportunities in the shark cage. Returning to shore, a delightful lunch awaited.!
Great Experience! It was a blast!!! We saw many sharks up close! We joined the combo tour with whale watching as well, both boat trips encountered so many wildlife. Staff is professional, smooth experience. Shuttle service is also arranged seamlessly. Our driver Shaheen is a big plus! A very nice guy and took good care of us. I would recommend this company to all of my friends!
Unbelievable day! What an incredible experience. 3.30am pick up from cape town to get there for 6am. Our driver Clint was so chill and informative. Perfect conditions for the shark diving the guys were so experienced and knew exactly where to go. Then we had a 3 hour wait until the whale watching but Clint took us to the penguin sanctuary and afrikanos where we had lunch and done a alligator tour to fill in the time. Again whale watching was amazing, the driver knew his stuff, we saw so much activity. Then to the drive back where we dozed off after a long and fantastic day! One of the highlights of our trip to cape town can’t recommend enough. Cheers to everyone.
Absolutely brilliant! A must see and do!! Today we had our shark diving adventure with white shark diving company, it was the first day of our honeymoon and we were picked up at 3:30, so prepare yourselves for an early start! We arrived to breakfast laid out for us to help ourselves to, we met all the team and crew and were given a health and safety demonstration, it is so clear to see all of the staffs passion for the marine life that they work with! The boat ride out was fast and fun and not once did we not feel safe. We arrived at the diving point and were given all of the gear we needed (definitely bring with you an underwater camera or filming gear) after only minutes there were a good amount of sharks circling the boat and they put the cage out ready for us. The dive was INCREDIBLE! We saw copper sharks today with the biggest being 3.2metres! They were such beautiful animals and it was a genuine pleasure to be able to see them in their natural habitat.
PERSONALITY AND PROFESSIONALISM WITH SHARKS in Gansbaai! From the time I was picked up at my hotel in Cape Town to when I was dropped off, I was impressed by the personality and professionalism of the crew of White Shark Diving Company. The booking staff answered all the questions I had prior to booking. And every communication I received informed me that the last time a white shark had been observed. The driver Shaheen was friendly and open to questions and conversation about South Africa. Mrs. Mary had nice breakfast waiting for us when we arrived and had nice hot lasagna waiting for us after we returned from the cols waters of Shark Alley. Each of boat crew were great in their roles.
Simply amazing!!! I went with my wife and my 2-year-old son. We were very well received by the team. During the trip my son remained asleep but when he woke up he was welcomed by the boat captain. The experience of diving and seeing the sharks was incredible! After the tour we were served lunch which was very tasty. We recommend the White Shark company to everyone!

Shark cage diving in South Africa by Great White Shark Tours

We invite you to join us onboard our boat, Apex Predator ,  for the ultimate great white shark cage diving and surface viewing adventure tour in South Africa.

Gansbaai is known as the great white shark capital of the world and is only a two-and-a-half hour scenic drive from Cape Town. It is here that Great White Shark Tours will make your dreams come true! The experienced crew will share their vast knowledge of the water world where they operate when they take you to view great white sharks from the surface or underwater from a cage. This marine wonderland is the closest place in the world where you can safely see these apex predators in their natural environment.

Our boat launches from Kleinbaai , only 12km from the coastal fishing village of Gansbaai , on an exhilarating 20-minute boat ride to where we will start looking for our first sharks. During the summer months, the sharks keep closer to shore and during winter they move to Shark Alley , a nearby channel created by two islands. Dyer Island with its endangered African Penguins and migrating bird colonies and Geyser Rock with its resident colony of 60 000 Cape Fur Seals. This is great white shark diving with added value!

Depending on the weather, our boat departs every day of the year and offers fantastic value-for-money shark cage diving and surface viewing adventure trips. When looking for shark cage diving trips in South Africa , book with a licensed shark cage operator and you will be sure to create memories to last a lifetime!

  • Great White Shark diving & breaching Tour

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Devryn Panaino

Safari Travel Planner

See the spectacular breaching behaviour of great white sharks as they hunt for Cape fur seals in False Bay, or go cage diving to get up close.

Great white shark diving and viewing expeditions operating out of Simon’s Town harbour on the Cape Peninsula are designed to show you some of the most spectacular behaviour seen anywhere in the animal kingdom, and to educate you on the white shark behaviour you’ll see at Seal Island. Seal Island has become world-famous for its breaching great whites that hunt some of the 64,000 Cape fur seals that live there.

You can also go cage diving to see the sharks up close.

All companies and boats comply with all safety requirements. They take small groups of 6–12 people to enhance your experience of seeing great white sharks and in an uncrowded environment. The crews can interact easily with guests and share their knowledge.

Note that these excursions are seasonal and weather dependent.

Great white shark morning trip The main focus of the morning tour is on a natural interaction with the sharks. We try to treat these animals with the respect they deserve and to share our passion for them with you.

Great white shark afternoon trip As with trips offered at Gansbaai, the sole focus of this afternoon trip is cage diving and surface viewing. Although you stand a chance of seeing the natural predation and breaching, this behaviour mostly takes place in the early morning so your chances of viewing this aren’t as good as on the morning excursion. But cage diving and surface viewing are more than enough to get you excited.

Welcome to Shark Cage Diving

Our 15 years of Experience in the Shark Cage Diving Industry, using only the Highest Quality Operators with 100% Safety Records and highest customer service rankings, coupled with an incredible Shark Diving and Accommodation Deal means when you book with us, you are Guaranteed to enjoy an Unforgettable experience – For all the Right Reasons!

Diving with Sharks takes place in Gansbaai which is on the coast of the Western Cape of South Africa, near to Hermanus.

Cape Town to Hermanus is 1.5 hours approx.

Hermanus to Gansbaai: 45 mins approx

Cape Town to Gansbaai: 2.5 hrs approx

All Shark diving trips launch from Kleinbaai Harbour, which is a couple of kilometers from Gansbaai – the Shark capital of the world. The drive from Cape Town to Gansbaai will take you 2.5hrs (165km) or if you are staying in Hermanus, the journey is only 45 minutes by car. The trip will make its way out to the famous Dyer Islands and Shark Alley. The islands are covered in seals and penguins, the sharks are migratory and will be in this area for food.

We do not feed or handle the sharks, to do so would jeopardize the ecology and our permit to run these tours. We are merely observing the shark in it’s natural environment whilst educating as many people as possible about this incredible predator.

If you don’t have your own transport, we can easily arrange a transfer for you. Return from the City of Cape Town, R650 per person. Return from Hermanus, R500 per person.

Shark Cage Diving in South Africa takes place throughout the year Best Underwater Visibility: April, May, June, July, August, September Good Underwater visibility: January, February, March – October, November, December

Chance of seeing sharks: 97% All year round

Shark Cage Diving in South Africa takes place throughout the year with the best visibility being during the South African winter months, although visibility is still excellent during the Summer months. Diving with Sharks tours are weather dependent so should the weather be inclement, the tour will be postponed for your safety and enjoyment We have 97% sightings, so you’ll more than likely see sharks. The very best time to see sharks in numbers is during the South African winter months (May-August). A few months either side of winter are also excellent times for viewing. During the peak middle of summer (Christmas/New Year) the number of sharks seen is usually less, this is due primarily to the colder water temperatures of mid-summer. We do get the very occasional day during peak summer when we might not see a shark, if this happens during your trip, you will receive a voucher to go out again for free.

Sharks mostly seen – Bronze Whaler Sharks – occasional sightings of White Sharks possible, but they are endangered, so sightings of them are a real bonus.

Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Winter time (Apr - Oct) is considered to be the best time to go Shark Cage Diving in South Africa with visibility being better than in the summer however, Great White Shark Diving can be done all year round!

Time at Sea:

Boats stay out at sea for around 2 - 4 hours depending on weather and sea conditions. Once anchored, the crew will immediately begin to chum the water with fish based products, like tuna and fish oil to attract the Great White Sharks. With the chum in the water all you can do is wait for the first shark to show up and hope that this happens quickly.

Once the first shark makes its appearance you will kit up and get into the cage where you can get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures. One to five Great Whites can be encountered in a day but if you are exceptionally lucky, you may see more.

Dive Equipment:

All dive gear including wetsuits and mask are provided so that you can enjoy the Shark Cage Dive in comfort.

Once in the cage all you need to do is lower yourself under the water using a simple breath-hold technique where you will be able to view the Great White Sharks lurking in the depths below.

Shark Diving is safe and very educational. You also don't need any dive certification to go Shark Cage Diving here in Cape Town.

For your 1st Dive you get about 20 - 30 minutes in the cage. Subsequent dives are then rotated amongst the divers to ensure everyone gets a chance to view the Great White Sharks. You can sometimes get 2 - 3 dives per trip if the weather, sea conditions and shark activity is good. The cage takes between 5 - 6 people at a time so there is plenty of time to cage dive. Numbers are limited to ensure maximum shark cage diving time.

For those of you who would prefer not to get in the cage, no problem, these fantastic apex predators can be viewed from the boat. Being surface feeders, it's almost as good as being in the water with them as everything happens pretty close to the surface, giving you exceptional views and fantastic photo opportunities of them circling and descending deeper into the depths below.

Shark Cage Diving Cape Town – the Safe Way

Our shark cage is constructed with galvanized steel and certified by a registered engineer. Further to this the South African cage-diving industry is regulated by a code of conduct and regulations from the Marine and Coastal Management DFFE – Department of Forest and Fisheries. Our equipment meets all the required safety standards and the experience of our crew ensures that you’re in good hands.

No experience is required to shark cage dive. We use the breath-hold technique as visibility can be limited and eyeball time with the animals underwater usually only lasts a few seconds at a time.  Our experienced and professional crew will give you direction to ensure maximum shark viewing whilst cage diving. A hookah scuba system is available upon request. Please indicate when making your booking.

Boat-Based Viewing

If you don’t want to get wet, the boat-based viewing is excellent as many of the sharks swim at the surface. Our surface viewing deck offers 360-degrees view. and our enclosed cabin offers cover and protection from the elements.  As the boat-based viewing is equal if not better than the cage dive, divers and non-divers pay the same price for the shark trip.

  • Wetsuits, masks and snorkels are disinfected, rinsed in fresh water and dried before every use.
  • Each guest will receive equipment that has been thoroughly disinfected and rinsed
  • Upon removal of wetsuits, booties, gloves, masks and snorkels, all items are immediately put into a disinfectant solution
  • Each piece of equipment is only used once per day
  • Guests are not allowed to share any equipment or towels that belong to Apex Shark Expeditions.

Safety First

  • All shark cage diving is done under the supervision of an experienced crew who have first aid & oxygen management, scuba & commercial skippers’ qualifications and expert knowledge of the behaviour of sharks around the cage
  • The cage is designed to float, leaving a freeboard of about 30cm (about one foot). The cage is solidly attached to the side of the boat by two thick ropes that prevent the cage from drifting away and equipped with several independent flotation devices which keep it buoyant
  • Our cage has been designed to ensure there are no sharp edges on which a shark can injure itself in the event one should touch the cage accidentally
  • The shark cage we use is a surface cage. It is not a submersible shark cage. Our crews are close to the cage at all times and will ensure any guest in distress is quickly and safely removed from the cage.
  • You may end your shark cage dive at any time as we operate surface cages only. Your head is never more than half a meter below the surface and you can decide when and how long you want to stay underwater
  • Specially designed doors ensure ease of access for divers. Getting into the cage is as simple as stepping off the boat
  • Our cage comfortably accommodates a GoPro camera and is equipped with steel hand and foot bars inside offering grip and stability when filming

great white shark trips cape town

When making a booking for shark cage diving Cape Town South Africa, it is important to have you have realistic expectations.

If you want to see a specific shark, we’ll happily advise you on the best times to book for the best chance of seeing that shark species.

By being flexible, you have the best chance of great shark interactions rather than just a fleeting glimpse, if we only offered just one species. All of the species we focus on are large, powerful and active predators sure to give you an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Seen all year round by our shark cage diving boats, the Bronze Whaler shark is a large and powerful predator. Reaching 3.3 meters (11 feet) long and weighing about 305 kilograms (672 lbs.) this is a fast-moving shark.

They are known to be somewhat aggressive to humans when they sense food or prey close by. And though they usually remain solitary, these sharks will often form groups to hunt prey more effectively.

They eat cephalopods like squid, cuttlefish, and octopus, also bony fish like catfish, salmon, tuna, sardines, and anchovies, then cartilaginous fish like dogfish sharks, stingrays, skates, electric rays, and sawfish.

They don’t typically hunt marine mammals, but they will feed on the carcass of dolphin when found. The South African population follows the famous Sardine Run every winter. This prey gathers in their millions and as a result, they attract a variety of predators including many species of shark.

In such cases where prey is abundant, these sharks will form groups and herd the sardines into a tight ball (bait-ball). They then take turns swimming through these balls with their mouths open to feed.

Though the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Bronze whaler as  Near Threatened  worldwide, their conservation status still varies depending on the specific locality in question.

  • Seven gill Cow Shark Seven gill sharks are mostly seen in our winter months, and are the ancient undertakers of the sea. Growing to at least 10 feet these massive sharks with their disproportionately large heads filled with heavily serrated hex comb-cutting teeth are the dinosaurs of the deep. There are few places on earth where they occur in shallow water with reasonable visibility. False Bay is one such location, and this is one of the great shark species we see on many of our expeditions into False Bay.
  • Great White Shark The Great white shark sightings have been highly variable since 2017. That said, due to our flexible options of booking all three Great white hotspots, we can advise on the best location that will give you the best great white shark encounter possible. Historically mid- June to end of July is the best time period for Great white sharks.
  • Blue and Mako Shark The Open Ocean is a realm that is visited by few. It is in this inky blue world of free ranging nomads where two great shark species, the Mako and Blue sharks, ply their trade. The scenery is breath-taking as you pass Cape Point and The Cape of Good Hope and before long, you see your first albatross as you head out into the open ocean. Curious, sometimes bold, and incredibly beautiful, Mako and Blue sharks are the apex predators of the open ocean.
  • Common Dolphin Common dolphin pods are usually seen from March to July and can be seen feeding on bait fish. We occasionally see Bottlenose and Dusky dolphins.
  • Southern Right Whale From August to November up to 3,500 Southern Right whales mate and give birth along the South African coast. Humpback whales may also occasionally be seen.
  • Brydes Whale These whales are endemic and can be seen all year round although they are shy and usually keep their distance.
  • African Penguin Boulders Beach is home to 3,500 African Penguins and we pass by this colony on our voyage to Cape Point. We often encounter hunting parties of penguins out on feeding sorties. There are a few African Penguins that live on Seal Island. It is rather odd to see these creatures living amongst so many seals. Perhaps they lost their way.

Remember this is a guideline only and that sightings on any trip can never be guaranteed – we’re sure you’ll appreciate that working with sharks is as wild as it gets!

The day before confirmation and shark species will depend on weather conditions. All trips are confirmed weather dependent and are not shark species-dependent.

  • Dress in layers as it can get very chilly at sea. We advise a warm weather jacket, sneakers or closed shoes, a beanie and a hat/cap
  • Polarized sunglasses – these help to block the glare thereby increasing sightings of the sharks from the boat. They also provide protection from harmful UV rays
  • If you are prone to the cold. a rash vest will help with extra insulation
  • Water Bottle
  • Lip-ice and Sunscreen SPF 50 – the African sun is beautiful but harsh
  • Camera, of course! GoPros are great for stills and videos and are easy to handle in the shark cage. Bring an extra SD card. You’re going to need it!
  • For those with poor eyesight, we advise wearing contact lenses whilst cage diving with sharks. If you own a prescription mask, please bring it with you
  • If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend Sturgeo n  or Dramamine. Take one the night before your trip and another an hour before the meet time.
  • For your own enjoyment of the trip, we recommend that you do not overindulge in alcohol the night before as this may result in being very seasick the next day.

Shark Bookings

Seal Island Hunting & Breaching Sharks

The boat leaves before dawn as this is the best time of day to see great white sharks hunt. Watching Great White Sharks Hunting is an amazing experience and attacks could last for minutes with the sharks having a 50% success rate on their attempts because seals move quicker than great white sharks.

great white shark trips cape town

Above Image by African Shark Eco Charters

The chase can be very exciting and wild with the shark and seal thrashing around on the surface; the seal tends to pear downwards and this is when the shark launches itself up and attacks. This spectacular sight is a once in a lifetime experience and unforgettable.

After first light, the hunting slows down as the sharks are now more visible to the seals. We then use a decoy which is towed behind the boat; this usually also promises some action.

After this exhilarating experience, we will visit Seal Island to see the colony of 40, 000 – 60, 000 Cape Fur Seals. Here we will drop the anchor and chum the water; the chum attracts the sharks to the cage to make viewing them easier. After the cage is lowered into the water your cage diving experience will start. This unforgettable experience will end with the cage diving experience.

Local News | Sharks ‘adapting their movements and routines,’ great white researchers discover

White sharks will be returning to cape cod over the next few months.

Sharks showed more active behavior at both dawn and dusk in places where they were feeding on fish rather than marine mammals. (Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries photo)

Do great white sharks change their behaviors in different environments, or do the apex predators follow the same routines regardless of location?

Researchers recently set out to solve this shark puzzle, as they reportedly discovered great white behaviors by attaching smart tags and cameras to their fins.

Great whites adapt their movements and routines based on the specific habitat they’re hunting in, according to the shark scientists.

“… The sharks are adapting their movements and routines to suit their local environment, rather than behaving the same way everywhere they’re found,” said shark researcher Oliver Jewell.

In the study, 21 white sharks from small juveniles to large adults were fitted with motion-sensitive biologging tags along the California coast in different environments — offshore islands, coastal headlands, and an inshore cove.

The tags were attached for up to six days at a time and measured swimming depths and body movements, before they detached and floated to the surface.

The California coast provided a unique space to conduct the work, not only because researchers had been studying this specific population for decades, but the area is home to both juvenile and adult white sharks.

“White sharks visit the same areas of central California year after year, with some seen in the same spot for 30 years or more,” said Jewell, a researcher at the University of Western Australia.

“We were looking to see what shapes their movements and routines while they are there,” Jewell added.

During the day, sharks at all sites were generally more active — swimming up and down the water column, suggesting they were actively searching for prey.

However, sharks showed more active behavior at both dawn and dusk in places where they were thought to feed on fish rather than marine mammals.

“We found the greatest differences in movements were from sharks from different areas, while the size of the shark and time of day were also important,” Jewell said.

It’s important to review the location of a shark when considering why it might be behaving a certain way, the scientist added.

“Hopefully, we can apply the research in a number of ways going forward — we’ve already been tagging more sharks in more areas, and will follow this up with further studies,” Jewell said.

Great white sharks will be returning to Cape Cod’s waters over the next few months, where they feed on seals throughout the summer and fall. Many sharks also head farther north to Maine and Canada.

This recent research was a part of Monterey Bay Aquarium’s “Project White Shark” and led by Jewell, a former Murdoch University PhD candidate, with Harry Butler Institute and the School of Environmental and Conservation Sciences — in collaboration with Oregon State University, Stanford University and California State University Monterey Bay.
