More information about South Africa

In the lower portion of the African continent lies South Africa , a diverse and fascinating country with a multitude of natural habitats, culture-filled cities and coastal enclaves to explore.

Famed for its wildlife, such as the lions of Kruger National Park , South Africa has coastlines on both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans and borders Namibia , Zimbabwe , Botswana , Mozambique,  and Swaziland.  South Africa vacation has such broad appeal because there is simply something to suit every kind of traveler within its vast territory.

From the scenic cycling trails of the Garden Route to the lush wine lands and vineyards of the Cape Peninsula and the colorful food markets of multicultural Johannesburg, there is no such thing as a typical South Africa tour. The country’s tumultuous history has ignited interest from across the globe, especially the political and social upheavals of the 20th-century , so it’s a fascinating place to visit as you can witness the emergence of a new, forward-looking and optimistic South Africa and get to know the fabric of its diverse society.

South Africa vacation package  is particularly popular with adrenalin junkies as it’s wild landscapes offer plenty of opportunities to explore outside your comfort zone. You can get your adrenaline fix in a dose to suit you, from shark cage diving off the coast to a leisurely hike up to the top of iconic Table Mountain ; whatever your preference for adventure, South Africa will provide. Three cities share the title of capital: Bloemfontein, Pretoria,  and Cape Town , the latter of which is known as the ‘ Mother City’ and is the most popular destination for travelers to South Africa.

History of South Africa

South Africa, as we know it today, is barely more than 100 years old and was originally a creation of the British Empire , who had colonized many parts of southern Africa, conquered indigenous tribes such as the Zulus in order to take control of more territory.

Historically, this part of the African continent had been inhabited by various different indigenous communities such as San , Khoikhoi and eventually, after their expansion, the Bantu peoples. In fact, South Africa is home to some of the oldest evidence of the existence of mankind in the world, such as in the caves of Sterkfontein, sometimes referred to as the ‘Cradle of Humankind’ and an unmissable sight on a tour of South Africa. Before British involvement in South Africa, Dutch settlers had colonized parts of the country following their arrival in 1652 . South Africa was valued, not only for its rich diamond and gold reserves but also for its important location on the trade route from Europe to Asia . British and Dutch , or Boer as they were known, colonialists clashed over territory resulting in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 , a major conflict resulting in huge losses for both sides.

The British came out of the conflict favorably and eventually established the Union of South Africa in 1910 . Although the white population was a minority, they had seized control over much of South Africa, sowing the seeds for the dark decades of apartheid in the later 20th-century. After the election of the National Party in 1948, apartheid was established. Both Dutch and English-speaking white minorities enjoyed the highest standards of living and full rights during this time, whilst the indigenous majority remained disadvantaged in all areas of life. Visitors that choose South Africa vacations  are often curious to find out more about this part of South Africa’s history and to understand the lasting effects this had on today’s society.

In 1992 a referendum ended apartheid, following ongoing negotiations between the recently freed Nelson Mandela and President F. W. de Klerk . Today, South Africa continues to strive towards complete racial equality and, on the whole, looks to the future with optimism.

Nature in South Africa

With so many unbelievably beautiful natural wonders, South Africa packs a punch when it comes to adventure travel. Whilst the rugged coastline of the Cape Peninsula is home to delights as varied as the penguins of Boulder’s Beach and great white sharks, the interior of the country is mostly flat and home to the immense landscapes of the Great Karoo , characterized by its unique flat-topped mountains and sparse grasslands.

In the north, where South Africa borders Namibia , the landscape transforms into the great dunes of the Kalahari Desert. A South Africa vacation all-inclusive is incomplete without contemplating the country’s great biodiversity; lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, and giraffes can be spotted in the Bushveld ecoregion, part of which is encompassed within the famous Kruger National Park. A safari in South Africa is a popular choice for travelers who wish to get up close to the wildlife whilst also appreciating the immense landscapes of the savannah. Other natural sights to explore on a package tour to South Africa include the mighty Blyde River Canyon , the world’s largest ‘green canyon’, where the winding river Blyde cuts its way through a lush, rocky landscape. The red sand dunes of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park offer completely different scenery and the baobab trees of Mapungubwe enchant the imagination of all who lay eyes on them. South Africa’s Garden and Panorama Routes give adventurers a blueprint for their discovery and offer a great introduction to the diversity of the country.

Culture in South Africa

Sometimes referred to as the ‘ rainbow nation’, this nickname is a testament to South Africa’s diversity. A total of eleven official languages, including Zulu, Afrikaans, English,  and Xhosa, show just how intricate and multi-faceted modern South African culture can be.

Traditional African culture exists mostly in rural areas, whilst the cities have fused westernized and traditional culture to create a vibrant tapestry of urban life, represented in an energetic music and arts scene. If you can incorporate both the modern urban centers and the rural communities into a tour of South Africa , you’ll be rewarded with a more complete picture of the national culture.

Indigenous communities such as the San and Khoikhoi are known for their artistic heritage. Ancient rock drawings deemed the oldest pieces of art in the world can be linked to these communities. Zulu ethnic groups, who live mainly in the KwaZulu-Natal region, are known for their colorful beadwork, basketry, and beehive-shaped huts. On the other hand, the architecture of major cities such as Pretoria and the towns of the Cape Peninsula exhibit the remnants of European influence in South Africa .

The music and arts of the townships are brilliant representations of modern-day South African culture; often edge and always vibrant. If you have the chance to visit a township during a holiday to South Africa , don’t pass up the opportunity as it is here that you can really understand the culture, history, and lives of everyday people.

Embrace the vast open spaces, exceptional wildlife and multi-faceted culture of the ‘ rainbow nation’ on a trip to South Africa. From the laid-back surfing beaches of Cape Town to the wilds of Kruger and trend-setting Johannesburg , South Africa needs to be on your bucket list!

African Safaris

The early days of safaris were focused on hunting, but today’s African Safari travelers have replaced rifles with cameras, seeking to capture the beauty of Africa’s wildlife without harming it. The “big five” are still a major attraction, but instead of hunting them, visitors hope to capture photos of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

In fact, today’s safari travelers play an important role in conservation efforts by paying park fees that support conservation efforts. Many of the animals that were once hunted are now endangered, and as human populations continue to grow, the pressure on their habitats and survival increases.

We as safari companies recognize the importance of conservation and have made efforts to ensure that visitors have a minimal impact on the environment. Most camps and lodges are built to blend in with the surroundings, and many use sustainable practices like solar power and recycling. Visitors are also encouraged to be mindful of their impact on the environment by following park rules and leaving no trace behind.

Luxury African Safari Holidays

Experience unforgettable Luxury African Safari Holidays in the unspoiled natural beauty that is Africa.

We know Africa and with the benefit of our firsthand experience we can help you make the best choices about the different destinations and types of African safaris when you’re faced with so many options.

Wildlife Safari adventures are one of the main ways first time visitors to Africa get to experience this continent. They are better expereienced in spacious, comfortable lodges and camps located in scenic stretches of Africa’s most popular game parks and reserves, offering a panorama of daily life in the African bush.

Best African Safari Vacation Destinations

While safaris can be found throughout Africa, there are certain destinations that are particularly popular for their abundance of wildlife and stunning landscapes. Here are some of the best safari destinations:

  • Kenya: Home to the Maasai Mara and the Great Rift Valley, Kenya is a top destination for safari-goers. The annual wildebeest migration is a highlight, as is the chance to see the “big five”.
  • Tanzania: Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is one of the most iconic safari destinations in Africa, with vast plains teeming with wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater is another must-see destination.
  • South Africa: South Africa offers a variety of safari experiences, from the famous Kruger National Park to private game reserves like Sabi Sands. The country is also home to Cape Town , one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
  • Botswana: With the Okavango Delta , Chobe National Park, and Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana is a top destination for safari-goers looking for a remote and wild experience.

Where To Go

You’ll either need to decide between southern and East Africa or combine these 2 great safari destinations.

Then, for classic scenery and thrilling African wildlife you can head for the great savannahs of Kenya and Tanzania , explore Botswana’s Okavango Delta or soak up the silence and soulfulness of Namibia’s great deserts.

If you’re looking for something a little different and off the beaten track, then consider one of our African safaris in Uganda, Zambia’s South Luangwa or southern Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve or Ruaha National Park . If you can’t find what you’re looking for then check out our range of seriously remote and exclusive tours on our Luxury Holidays in Africa feature.

Safari Holidays

South Africa safaris holidays offer a range of experiences to suit everyone. Choose between the enormous diversity of the Kruger National Park or its more exclusive neighbour, the Sabi Sands Private Reserve , where you might see the Big 5 on a single game drive.

South Africa also offers malaria-free safaris – the Madikwe Game Reserve and the Eastern Cape’s many reserves are well-established and make a great pairing with a visit to other destinations such as Cape Town or the Garden Route .

To guide you further in your decision-making process, we’ve broken our African Safaris down into several types to suit your preference, personality and budget.

Arrive in Cape Town South Africa

On arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you will be chauffeured to your home base for the next three nights; the prestigious One&Only Cape Town.

As you approach Cape Town – consider the words of renowned explorer, Sir Francis Drake in the 1580s, “This cape is the most stately thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth.”  Central to the city’s impressive panorama, Table Mountain – and below it a landscape packed with attractions.

Boasting the largest rooms of any hotel in the city, the hotel is located on a private island within the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.  An enclave of serenity, the hotel is styled in a chic, vibrant way – reflecting the diversity of this bustling metropolis.

The rooms offer guests the option of mountain or marina views.  Furnishings are bright and welcoming, while every effort is made to ensure your absolute comfort.  Each of the suites is equipped with large beds, an en-suite bathroom and a comfortable seating area.

Facilities at the hotel continue this trend of stylish comfort and relaxation.  The in-house spa offers bespoke pampering and a gym will ensure you can keep up your exercise routine.  A sparkling pool invites guests to cool off in the summer heat.

The hotel has a number of dining options, including the renowned Nobu, the Vista Bar & Lounge and the poolside Isola.  True to Cape tradition, The Wine Studio features one of the most balanced and diverse wine collections on the continent.

The adjacent Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is a shoppers’ paradise, while numerous ocean activities, from whale-watching to sunset cruises depart from the marina.

One&Only Cape Town

Cape Winelands

On your first day, we offer you the opportunity to explore the legendary Cape Winelands, in the company of an experienced wine guide.  There are two full-day experiences to choose from – the first of which takes place in the nearby Constantia Valley, home of numerous esteemed estates.  Tempting the palate further, a chocolate tasting is a treat for all ages.

To burn off excess energy a visit to a Bike Park offers miles of track to explore.  A more sedate exploration can be made of the Heritage Market, tempting that other “-holic” – the shopaholic.

The second option takes you to historic Stellenbosch.  South Africa’s second-oldest town is rich in European settler influences – reflected in the iconic Cape Dutch architecture.  Sample the region’s signature cabernet sauvignon and pinotage and explore the neighboring estates to round off a full-bodied South African wine experience.

south african safari all inclusive vacations

Refreshed and ready to explore one of the worlds’ most celebrated city destinations, the next two full days will be spent in the care of experienced local guides.

Half-day tours are on offer today, the first exploring the city itself, while the second circumnavigates the Cape Peninsula.

On a private tour, first orient yourself with the city’s amphitheater-like layout from Table Mountain – reached via cable car.  Then descend into the city bowl to visit the historic and cultural attractions that await.

Greenmarket Square is alive with commerce, the Company Gardens a place of contemplation amid the bustle, and an old castle harbors stories of ghosts.  The old Malay Quarter showcases colorfully painted houses and the story of the country’s political history.  The excursion concludes with an exclusive diamond tour – and the chance to add to your bling.

A half-day Peninsula tour offers respite from the clamor of the city, taking you on a scenic journey comparable with the best in the world.  Transitioning from the city, you will visit the upmarket beach hotspots of Clifton and Camps Bay – where celebrities from all parts of the world are seen.

A winding road hugs the coastline towards Hout Bay and then rises onto South Africa’s most beautiful road – Chapman’s Peak Drive.  The road offers heart-stopping views of the sparkling Atlantic, before descending gracefully en-route to Cape Point.    From there the road winds past a colony of rare African Penguins,  continuing through fishing villages and surfing hotspots until you reach the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, to marvel at the country’s rich floral heritage before returning to your hotel for your final evening.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Today, prepare to be amazed at how easily Africa changes wardrobe, as a flight to Skukuza followed by a road transfer whisk you from urban excitement to the tranquility of the African bushveld.

Ever since such adventurers as Livingstone, Hemingway and Roosevelt shared stories of their African safaris, travelers the world over have come to Africa to witness firsthand its myriad sights – in particular, its diverse wildlife and the habitats they roam.

Inspired by this grand safari tradition, &Beyond Kirkman’s Kamp, within the Greater Kruger National Park – celebrates Africa’s wildlife heritage in a homestead-styled setting, bedecked in luxury and intuitive service.

With only twelve chalets, each with a stunning view of the perennial Sand River and surrounding landscape, the camp promises guests an experience to remember both within and beyond its confines.  Incorporating a private veranda and en-suite bathroom, the rooms are colored in soft earth tones with simple, yet appealing, decor and furnishings.

Outside, rolling lawns host games of croquet, while at the main lodge, inviting lounge areas, a cozy bar, and sparkling swimming pool are places where guests share tales of their sightings. Depending on your time of arrival, you might also join the afternoon game-drive.

Evening meals are taken in a contemporary boma, beneath jeweled heavens.  Throughout your stay, there will be no shortage of culinary delights to keep you energized for the various activities on offer.  Remember to enquire about the spa treatments, and the WILDchild program specifically for children.

DAY 5.  The typical day at Kirkman’s starts at dawn.  In the care of an experienced Ranger-Tracker team, you will head out in search of wildlife, including the famed Big 5.  In most places, leopards are seldom seen, but this area is revered as one of the best places to watch them go about their secretive lives.

Wildlife of all types abound and you will likely see large herds of elephants, buffalo, and other plains game.  Your guide will point out various birds, while your tracker might share some of the traditional uses of plants.  In the late afternoon, the second drive of the day culminates under a spotlight as you search for nocturnal species such as bushbabies, porcupine and aardvark.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Africa on foot, by joining fascinating interpretative walks where you will learn track identification, among many other interesting facts.

Kirkman’s Kamp

kirkmans-camp-sabi-sand-05

Kruger National Park

From Kirkman’s, a road transfer takes you northwards to Ngala Safari Lodge.  Here too the safari traditions of yesteryear are incorporated into the decor.  Plush furnishings in a comfortable lounge area – overlooking a busy waterhole – constitute the starting point of the wildlife activities on offer.  Nearby, you can relax at the swimming pool in the heat of the day, watching a passing parade of wildlife visiting the waterhole.

The lodge has 21 thatched huts set amid stands of mopane trees.  Each of the well-appointed rooms has an en-suite bathroom, a shady veranda and A/C to take the edge off hot days.  Warm earth tones reflect the surrounding landscape, which is a little more rugged than that of Kirkmans.

Once again, meals are a lavish affair taken in a variety of locations – from a cosy courtyard to the legendary bush dinners at a secret location.  The cuisine is wholesome yet refined – a blend of familiar dishes with a distinctly African twist.

DAY 7 .  The Tsonga word Ngala means lion in the local dialect, a fitting name – for land that is said to have the highest density of lion in all Africa.  Evening discussion is often brought to a halt as their deep mournful calls thunder across the landscape.  By day, the soundtrack of the camp is a medley of birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the cooling breeze.

The Ngala camps enjoy exclusive traversing on a vast tract of land some 14,000 hectares in extent.  The north is predominated by mopane woodland – a habitat favored by large herds of buffalo and elephants, as well as kudu and painted wolf.  To the south, the vegetation opens up and is favorable terrain for zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, and numerous other plains game species.  Stands of old-growth riverine forest and a network of gullies provide shelter for leopards, while cheetah are frequently spotted on the grasslands.

Your Ranger and Tracker are passionate about the environment, and this translates to a fascinating study of the land and its wild inhabitants.  Game-drives are conducted in the cooler hours of the early morning and late afternoon, transitioning into the evening when spotlights are used to find nocturnal creatures such as civets, genets and owls.  Daily walks are also on offer to learn more about the intricacies of the ecosystem.

A special program for young children, spa treatments, and the chance for a sleepout in a luxurious treehouse are additional options available on request.

Ngala Safari Lodge

Victoria Falls

Today you leave South Africa, flying from Kruger-Mpumalanga International to Zambia, where a road transfer takes you across the border into Zimbabwe to your ultimate destination; the highly regarded Victoria Falls River Lodge.  The day is largely spent traveling, so arrival at the lodge where you will spend the next three nights will be a welcome and revitalizing experience.

The first European to discover the Victoria Falls was Scottish explorer, David Livingstone, who remarked, “I believe that no one could perceive where the vast body of water went; it seemed to lose itself in the earth, the opposite lip of the fissure into which it disappeared being only 80 feet distant.”  Little did he know he had stumbled on the worlds’ largest waterfall, which has held millions in awe ever since.

On the banks of the Zambezi River which plunges over the falls, lies the lodge, rated in the top percentile of hotels worldwide and is the recipient of numerous prestigious travel accolades.  As you step into its cool, leafy surroundings, you will understand why it is worthy of these and many other accolades.

Accommodation at the lodge comprises luxuriously spacious tents, each with a private deck, an open-plan bathroom with an outdoor shower, a plunge pool and A/C.  Cool breezes off the river and muted tones lend a refreshing air to the accommodation – along with the lazy honking of the hippos and birdsong that permeates the air.

The main lodge serves as the social hub, where guests can gather to share tales of their travels, or enjoy the view on the multi-level decks overlooking the Zambezi River.  An inviting bar and excellent dining cater to your culinary needs, while a spa and fitness center attend to your wellness.  The lodge offers a host of activities, catering to adventure seekers of all ages.  They will also gladly arrange off-site activities on request.

DAY 9 & 10 .  As before, twice daily game-drives offer guests the opportunity to explore the 150,000 hectare Zambezi National Park in the company of seasoned wildlife guides who will interpret the sights and sounds you encounter.  Rich in game, the reserve is home to elephant, hippo, crocodile, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, sable, kudu, impala, wild dog, and the occasional big cat is a treat.  A special Junior Discoverer game-drive is tailored to children (4-7) accompanied by a parent.

Walking trails for guests 12 years and over explore the plants, insects and animal tracks, brought to life by knowledgeable guides.  You will also get so close to the waterfall and its heavy mist, that a raincoat is a necessity whatever the weather.

Victoria Falls is renowned amongst modern adventurers for the activities on offer.  As a special treat, take off on a scenic helicopter flight over the falls and adjacent gorges.  Too tame for you?  How about a headlong 350-foot plunge into the Batoka Gorge at the Victoria Falls bridge bungee site.  Still not had enough?  Join whitewater professionals navigating the tumbling torrents at the bottom of the gorge.  The lodge staff will gladly inform you of many more adventurous activities available in the adjacent vicinity.

No visit to the lodge is complete without a river cruise on the mighty Zambezi – either in the early morning to enjoy the sight of the sun-tinged mists rising from the falls, or in the evening, when the sunset display, the sound of ice clinking in glasses, along with the chuckles of both hippos and fellow passengers combine in a fitting finale of your Cape to Falls Adventure.

Victoria Falls River Lodge

Without exception, those who have been privileged to spend time with gorillas report a near-mythical experience, as if glancing into our ancestral past.  Sharing upwards of 98% of DNA, the link between our species is undeniable.  While they are massively powerful creatures – with males weighing over 400 pounds – they are by nature shy and placid.  Primarily herbivores, they spend much of their day alternating between foraging and rest.

Zanzibar Beach Retreat

For those wishing to enjoy a little pure downtime, perhaps following an action-packed safari, our Zanzibar itinerary offers the perfect blend of luxury, simplicity and all the idyllic pleasures of beach life. We have chosen from among Zanzibar’s best beach lodges options which are suitable for either families or those seeking an intimate, sophisticated retreat surrounded by the warm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean

Sun, sea and safari: South Africa highlights

Welcome to the wild! Is an African safari the ultimate tick on your bucket list? It should be! South Africa is special, there is no doubt about it, it is dusty and adventurous and warm and crazy and so much fun - we guarantee you will be back for more. The great thing about South Africa is the diversity you can find in one destination - 'Big Five' game reserves, waterfalls, spectacular self-drives, history, culture, great gastronomy, luxury, romance… we could go on and on!

You can discover lush scenery, breathtaking mountain views and exotic wildlife with holidays to South Africa. Plan your trip and discover our South Africa holiday packages and  hotels  today.

South Africa is a vast country with each province, city and game reserve offering a different experience, so where do you start? Most visitors combine a few different places within the country or across the region, travelling by plane, train or self-drive, and this is certainly what we would recommend.

Here are a few of our favourite combinations across South Africa and beyond:

Cape Town

City life mixed with adventure

Settle into an oceanside room in Cape Town then stay in the thick of it inside a game reserve. You can fly direct from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth for the Eastern Cape private game reserves or straight into Hoedspruit or Skukuza airports for the Kruger National Park.

Garden Route

Adding in some relaxation

For a relaxing break that includes a bit of the bustle of city life, start in Cape Town then take a meandering drive along the famous Garden Route ending in one of our wonderful game reserves in the Eastern Cape.

Safari & Sun City

Not a city person?

Then just skip the high-rises and get straight out into the bush. Sun City and Madikwe, Madikwe and Marataba, or just an extended stay in the Kruger, there are loads of options for the wild at heart.

south african safari all inclusive vacations

Culture vulture?

South Africa has a fascinating history and is a melting pot of cultures. Johannesburg and Cape Town are a great place to start with a choice of museums and exhibitions.

south african safari all inclusive vacations

Want to stay in one place?

Enjoy the Cape Town summer at The Bay Hotel in fun and funky Camps Bay, home to some of the city’s trendiest bars and restaurants. Stay here for the best of both worlds – where city life meets a sandy beach and the very best spot in the city for sunset cocktails.

Winelands

Head into the Winelands

Opt for Richard Branson’s Franschhoek lodge, Mont Rochelle, the ultimate in luxury. If you have a bit more time then add on a few nights in Hermanus too to spot whales and the infamous Great White Shark!

Holidays to South Africa wouldn’t be complete without a spectacular Big Five safari. You can choose to stay in a lodge or tent within one of the parks, or reside just outside and plan your own self-guided road trip safari instead  – either way, this is your chance to spot some incredible wildlife.

Safari & Sun City

When to go?

From April to October, we recommend heading for nothern areas such as Kruger National Park to enjoy warm safari evenings, and hot summer storms. However, if you do choose to enjoy the Eastern Cape in these winter months, the dry weather allows for low grass, less water-holes and easier wildlife spotting. From November to March, expect glorious weather wherever you go.

Kruger

Kruger National Park

One of the largest game reserves in South Africa with over 500 bird species and around 150 species of mammals. You’ve got a great choice of accommodation from tip-top luxury lodges to smaller, traditional hotels and homesteads outside of the park, great for the more budget-conscious.

south african safari all inclusive vacations

Heading South

Offering fantastic value for money, the Garden Route and Eastern Cape are home to some great private Big Five reserves including Pumba Private Game Reserve, with luxurious lodges and loads of activities on offer, especially for the kids. You're best off travelling in South Africa's summer months here (November - March) - if you're a first time safari-goer these would be perfect!

Safari & Sun City

Hotel comforts

If you like the idea of a safari but without staying in a lodge, try Sun City. This entertainment resort offers a good range of accommodation, a huge waterpark and choice of activities in a prime location just outside of the Pilanesberg National Park.

Immerse yourself in history and everyday life in vibrant  Cape Town . The lively metropolitan city is home to a myriad of boutiques, museums, restaurants and nightlife hotspots.

south african safari all inclusive vacations

The summer in Cape Town brings glorious weather and a drive through vineyards and along the Garden Route is one of the country’s highlights but also don’t be put off by travelling in the winter months! Sipping white wine under oak trees in the Cape vineyards in the summer months turns into drinking rich reds around the fire. Winter is also the best time to see the famous Southern Right Whales as they migrate to the Whale Coast from  April to November .

Iconic Landmarks

Take a cable car up Table Mountain National Park for breathtaking views. Go early to miss the intense heat or abseil down if you’re feeling particularly adventurous. If you don't fancy such dizzy heights book yourself a ticket for the open bus tour - for less than £20 you can get a complete day tour taking in views of Table Bay along with Kirstenbosch National Gardens and the Constantia Vineyards.

Food and Drink

The V&A Waterfront is the most visited tourist attraction in South Africa and a great place to find your feet. If you love sampling local food and drink, this is the place for you - head to the food market where you'll find over 40 vendors selling gourmet street food, accompanied by regular live music and local wines and beers. Pop by The Watershed with it's huge range of local crafts, great for picking up a souvier.

south african safari all inclusive vacations

When you've had enough of the hustle and bustle, escape to one of the beaches on the Cape coast for a picnic, Clifton or Camps Bay are a great option. In the evenings, get the party started on Long Street. On hotter summer nights, seek out a rooftop bar for epic views (and Instagram-worthy photo ops).

History and Culture

Learn about the country’s rich history in one (or all) of the city’s many museums. District Six museum is a must-see to learn about the history of the apartheid. Set aside at least two hours to take in all the exhibits.

Alongside the wildlife, there’s all manner of forests, mountains and lagoons waiting to be explored. Here are a few you might not want to miss.

Cango Caves

Located in the Garden Route, these massive chambers are easy to explore and the perfect escape from the midday heat. If you're adventurous (and don't mind tight spaces), opt for the extended tour.

south african safari all inclusive vacations

Swartberg Pass

After exploring the beautiful Karoo, take a majestic drive along the Swartberg Pass, dropping down from Oudtshoorn to the Garden Route coastline. Here you can immerse yourself in dramatic mountain scenery and beautiful flowers.

Kruger and Surrounds

Grab a car and spend a few nights here, as the prime location of this town allows for spectacular self-drive safaris in the Kruger National Park but also close-by is one of the largest canyons on earth, the Blyde River Canyon. The region is known as the Panoramic Route which includes God’s Window, the Three Rondavels and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

Length: 10 days Starting price: $4,899

As the trip name implies, the 10-day Best of Cape Town & Botswana vacation package from longtime safari operator Lion World Travel combines a few days of sightseeing in Cape Town, South Africa – where you'll visit the iconic Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula – with a classic safari in Botswana. During the latter half of the itinerary, visitors will explore Botswana's Okavango Delta, home to cheetahs, crocodiles, hippos and more; you'll have the option of a helicopter flight to spot wildlife from above for an extra fee. Then, you'll visit Chobe National Park, which is believed to have the world's largest African elephant population.

Prices start at $4,899 per person based on double occupancy. Rates cover game drives; many of your meals; and stays in a four-star hotel in Cape Town as well as luxury tents in Botswana. You'll need to pay an extra charge for the flights within the tour (from Cape Town to Botswana and from Botswana to Johannesburg ).

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day trip through the country's sprawling game reserves and national parks is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for spotting elephants – before moving on to the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals like leopards, rhinos, hippos and more. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife such as zebras and buffalo on the savannah as well as the ethereal white salt pans from a former lake.

You'll stay in upscale lodges and camps within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person and varies by time of year), but international flights to get to Botswana are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris: 8 Day Battlefields, Bush & Beach Safari

Onne Vegter | Courtesy of Wild Wings Safaris

Length: Eight days Starting price: About $4,160 for self-drive option

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some local history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush & Beach Safari. With an itinerary focused on the east of South Africa, you'll start off visiting some of the country's historic sites from the Boer wars, including locations where local Zulu warriors defeated the British, before moving on to Phinda Private Game Reserve. This park doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the "big five" without too many crowds.

The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. Kayaking and walks through coastal forests are other activities on offer here. As far as safaris go, this one is a somewhat more affordable option, starting at about $4,160 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

This tour company kicks off many of its tours from the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, with a host of safaris that range from three to nine days, across Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, including some family-friendly choices. For an affordable option, consider the four-day Discover Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park and Hwange National Park safari. It will take you on two full-day tours to Chobe National Park in Botswana and Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest national park, where you should keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants and more, while also visiting rural villages. This safari includes a wildlife spotting boat cruise on the Chobe River as well.

The price starts at $1,015 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and well-rated lodging in Victoria Falls. Travelers will need to pay for their own travel to Victoria Falls. Dinners aren't included, although you'll be staying in the town of Victoria Falls, with access to restaurants.

The company provides prices on request. The tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights or the optional "Cheetah Walk." Compass Odyssey allows the tour to be customized on request.

Expert Africa: Big Cat Fly-in Safari

Lewa Safari Camp animal sightings with Expert Africa.

Length: Nine days Starting price: $5,010

Expert Africa offers safaris and other tours in a host of African countries. For a relatively classic tour, consider the Big Cat Fly-in Safari. It offers two different looks at Kenya's stellar wildlife. Firstly, you'll fly north for four nights at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a sanctuary that channels all its profits into protecting the wildlife in its roughly 100-square-mile reserve. You'll stay in classic tented rooms and enjoy three-course dinners, with the option of going on horse- or camelback safaris for an extra fee.

Despite the tour name, you're most likely to see elephants, giraffes, zebras and rhinos here. In fact, you're more likely to see big cats at the tour's second stop, when you fly south to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The tour company reports a high success rate for travelers spotting lions (and a decent chance of spotting leopards or cheetahs too). Here, you'll spend four days in upscale tents and have the option of soaring over the plains in a hot air balloon. The tour starts at $5,010 for eight nights, with all transport within Kenya included – although Expert Africa customizes most of its tours, so you can likely adjust your safari to your preferences.

Volcanoes Safari: 7 Day Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safari

The Deluxe Room at Bwindi Lodge from Volcanoes Safaris.

Courtesy of Volcanoes Safaris

Length: Seven days Starting price: $8,430

If you're looking to spot some great apes, Volcanoes Safari focuses exclusively on primate tours within Rwanda and Uganda – and with partnerships with the Jane Goodall Institute and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, they're responsible too. One of its signature tours, this seven-day itinerary kicks off in Uganda, taking travelers to the famed Kyambura Gorge to spot chimpanzee communities, as well as on a trek through the Bwindi Forest to look for gorillas.

But it's not all about monkeys: The tour also includes chances to see lions on the Ugandan plains and to meet locals engaging in cooperative work raising bees and roasting coffee. Along the way, guests stay in stylish lodges with views of Uganda's mountains and forests. The tour starts at $8,430 per person based on double occupancy in the low season, with all meals included.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Although COVID-19 vaccination requirements no longer exist, it's not uncommon for countries to require you to be vaccinated against illnesses such as yellow fever before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

For many destinations, there are a number of other vaccinations that aren't mandatory but are still recommended, such as for cholera or rabies. Consult with a doctor and ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor about potentially bringing anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of July 2024:

Botswana: If you have recently visited or transited through a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa as well as Central and South America. Consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days per year without a visa.

Kenya: Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places where yellow fever is endemic to be vaccinated against it. The CDC recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an eVisa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no less than two weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less per year.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50 for a single entry or $70 for multiple entries, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission, including transits of 12 hours or longer in such countries. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country. The vaccine should be administered 10 days or more before arrival

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 or a multiple-entry, one-year visa for $100. Be sure to print a copy of the approval (called a "grant notice") to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a single-entry visa on arrival in most cases, although the Tanzanian government still recommends the advance online application. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure. The processing time is around seven days, but the Ugandan government recommends applying 30 days before you travel; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. A single-entry visa costs $50. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk, including long transits (12 hours or more) through such countries. Visas are not required for U.S. citizens visiting Zambia. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks require a vaccine against this illness. This includes long transit stopovers of 12 hours or more.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Essential Tips for Your South Africa Safari Vacations

Before setting off on your South African safari vacation, it's good to know a few tips. Here's everything you need to know before embarking on your safari vacation.

It is estimated that there are nearly 40,000 giraffes in South Africa

The Culture

From the Zulu nation's rich traditions to the Xhosa's deep-rooted customs, every ethnic group contributes to the country's unique cultural identity. A visit here is incomplete without experiencing the powerful harmonies of a local choir or the storytelling dance of the San people.

Heritage and Harmony

The Rainbow Nation is a place where different cultures not only coexist but flourish together. Museums across the country, like the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, provide a profound look into the country's challenging past and the journey to democracy.

Cultural Celebrations

Festivals are a colourful showcase of South Africa's artistic diversity, featuring everything from indigenous art forms to contemporary music. The National Arts Festival in Makhanda is one such event that gathers artists and performers from all over the continent.

Language and Literature

South Africa's constitution recognizes 11 official languages, illustrating the nation's linguistic richness. Literature is another avenue where the cultural narratives unfold, with Nobel laureates like Nadine Gordimer and J.M. Coetzee among its storytellers.

Music and Dance

Music is the heartbeat of South African culture. Genres like Kwaito, Afrikaans rock, and Marabi capture the spirit of the nation. Traditional dances, often accompanied by rhythmic drumming, remain a vital part of ceremonies and social gatherings.

The Best Time to Visit

South Africa's allure is year-round, but the best time to visit can depend on your activities of interest. Here's a seasonal guide to help plan your South Africa safari vacations.

Spring (September to November)

Spring bursts with colour as wildflowers carpet the Western Cape. It's an ideal time for whale watching and enjoying the temperate weather before the summer heat.

Summer (December to February)

The warmest months are perfect for beachgoers and festivities. However, it's also the rainy season for most of the country, which can be ideal for bird watching as migratory birds arrive.

Autumn (March to May)

The heat subsides and the crowds thin out, making it a perfect time for those seeking tranquility. The bush is still lush, and wildlife viewing in the national parks is excellent.

Winter (June to August)

Winter is prime for wildlife enthusiasts, as the sparse vegetation and limited water sources make animal sightings more common. Days are mild, although nights can be cold, so pack accordingly.

Local Events

Plan around vibrant local events like the Cape Town Jazz Festival in March or the Knysna Oyster Festival in July for a taste of local festivities.

Things to Know

How long can you vacation in south africa.

A short-term Visitor Visa is valid for up to 90 days. You can if you wish apply for a long-term Visitor Visa, which lasts up to three years.

What currency does South Africa use?

South Africa uses the rand, which trades at around 18 to 1 USD. Cards are accepted for most payments, however, carrying a small amount of cash can help with small transactions.

How much is a safari in South Africa?

A moderate  South Africa vacation can be very affordable, starting around US$135 per person, per day, including time exploring the Western Cape and a safari at a popular park like Kruger. A deluxe experience with safaris at private game reserves can cost around US$450-500 per person, per day, and there are plenty of options in between. Things get more expensive if you want to explore more remote wildlife regions. Rail travel in South Africa is its own experience, with options up to and including Rovos Rail, ‘the most luxurious train in the world.’ A trip onboard Rovos can cost around US$750 per day, depending on the itinerary.

When is the best time to go on safari in South Africa?

Planning a nice, ‘dry’  South Africa trip can be tricky since Kruger and the Western Cape have opposite seasonal schedules.  A South Africa safari is best had between May and October when cooler temperatures and Kruger’s dry season make the animals easier to spot. Kruger is also surprisingly uncrowded at this time since most tourists plan their South Africa vacation around summer. This is, admittedly the best time of year to explore Cape Town and the Garden Route, which can get cold and rainy from June to August. If you’re visiting both (and you should), decide which is more important to you and prepare for potentially sub-optimal conditions in the other. You’ll still have a great trip.

Where to stay in South Africa for safari?

Kruger National Park, located in the country’s northeast is South Africa’s largest and most popular safari destination. In the Greater Kruger area, you’ll also find MalaMala Private Game Reserve and Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, which is one of the best places in Africa to see big cats including those elusive leopards. The next best region for a South Africa safari is Kwazulu-Natal. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is the star park here, with a healthy population of white rhinos as its main attraction. It too offers an enclosed game reserve in the form of Phinda, famous for its plentiful cheetah sightings. If you want a proper Big Five safari experience, you need to go beyond the Western Cape. There are agencies in Cape Town offering ‘safaris’ but these can’t compete with the eastern parks. If you want to see wildlife on the Western Cape, focus on its birds, including large colonies of ostriches and penguins, and its impressive marine life, including great white sharks and migrating whales.

Do I need to tip in South Africa?

Tipping about 10 percent of the bill is customary in South Africa. You can increase this to 15 or 20 percent for exceptional service.

What to pack for a safari in South Africa

Light, natural, earthy colours in breathable fabrics are the best way to ensure a comfortable  South Africa safari . Avoid dark colours as these can attract mosquitos. Bring a few practical layers if you’re coming in the cooler months from May to October. South African safari vehicles are open, and things get chilly on those early-morning and late-afternoon game drives. Long, lightweight pants and sturdy walking shoes are must-haves on a walking safari, or hiking around the Western Cape. A good camera is also a must. Whether you’re using your phone or an advanced digital camera with a zoom lens, know its settings and quirks inside and out before landing in South Africa. You don’t want to miss an amazing shot.

Is it safe to go to South Africa now?

South Africa has gained a reputation for petty and sometimes violent crime and unfortunately, it’s not unjustified. Keep your wits about you at all times, particularly in cities like Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. Always take cabs or ride app services after dark. Popular tourist districts like Cape Town’s waterfront and Bo-Kaap are relatively safe, but avoid walking alone through local neighbourhoods you don’t know, even during the day. Avoid hiking alone even in popular areas like Table Mountain National Park. Visiting South Africa’s townships on an ethical tour is a safe and fascinating way to learn more about South African society, but don’t go on your own. Hotel staff and reputable guides take your safety extremely seriously, so ask for recommendations and follow their advice if you’re not sure. On safari, common sense rules apply. Give wild animals their space, and follow your guide’s directions at all times.

Is South Africa LGBTQ+ friendly?

South Africa was the first African country and one of the first in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. LGBTQ+ South Africans enjoy almost all the same privileges and protections as their neighbours, and while non-binary gender is not currently recognized, it’s likely only a matter of time. The majority of South Africans are accepting of LGBTQ+ people, including Trans identities.

Can I drink the tap water in South Africa?

In most urban areas, it’s safe to drink and cook with South Africa’s tap water. In rural areas, you may want to stick with bottled water. Cape Town’s water crisis of the 2010s ended with strong rains in 2020.

Food & Drink

Indulge in the culinary delights of South Africa, where the food scene is as diverse as its landscapes.

Local Cuisine

Try traditional dishes like biltong (dried, cured meat), boerewors (farmers' sausage), and bobotie (spiced minced meat bake).

A quintessential South African experience is the "braai', a social barbecue gathering. It's not just about grilling meat; it's a cherished cultural tradition that brings people together.

Seafood Specialties

The coastal regions offer fresh seafood. Savour grilled kingklip, succulent oysters, or traditional fish and chips at a seaside eatery.

Wine and Vineyards

South Africa's winelands are world-renowned. Tour the Cape Winelands and taste exquisite Pinotage or Chenin Blanc, unique to the country.

Street Food

Explore local markets for street food. Try a "bunny chow" – a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with curry, a testament to the Indian influence on South African cuisine.

Desserts and Sweets

For those with a sweet tooth, melktert (milk tart) and koeksisters (braided fried dough dipped in syrup) are must-tries.

A Complete Guide to an African Safari

Image via

Many adventurers and environmental lovers desire to go on an African safari. It's an amazing journey as it offers the opportunity to see magnificent animals in their natural habitat, beautiful scenery, and diverse cultural experiences.

An African safari is an intensive experience that can forge a deep connection between you and nature. Africa has some of the most magnificent wildlife mammals that are really rare to see. Planning the right Africa Safari requires proper research to find the right guides. The continent is rich with many species and a wide variety of scenery and natural habitats, from the wide savannas of the Serengeti to the verdant deltas of the Okavango.

Selecting a Safari Location

There are multiple safari locations in Africa; they're all different and have their own unique traits. You can choose African safari according to your preferences and the creatures, views, and landscapes you want to spot. Among the most popular, favored ones are these:

  • Tanzania's Serengeti National Park:

One of the most amazing animal spectacles in the world, the Great Migration, takes place in the Serengeti every year. Exotic wildlife can be easily seen. Over two million zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests travel across the plains yearly for new grazing areas.

The Serengeti is home to the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion, and leopard), making it an excellent place to see these magnificent creatures. Open savannas, riverine forests, and woodlands are among the park's diverse landscapes, home to many animals and complement the vibe itself.

  • Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve:

As a part of the Serengeti ecosystem, the Maasai Mara also is a part of the Great Migration. It is well-known for its spectacular Mara River crossings.

Big cats (lions, leopards, and cheetahs) can be seen quite often in the reserve, offering fantastic chances for up-close encounters and photographs. If you want to witness the migratory range, then visiting this from July to October is the best time. For predator activity, December to February is most suitable. You can see a lot of different beautiful places just by walking safaris or hot air balloon drives and excursions to Maasai settlements.

  • South Africa's Kruger National Park

With well-developed infrastructure, including asphalt roads, Kruger is one of Africa's most accessible parks, making it a good choice if you want to drive by yourself through it. Numerous bird species, wild canines, and the Big Five are among the many wildlife species that can be seen in the park. Through this experience , you can see rare species and learn more about them from experts, like their habits, food choice, food chain explanation, etc.

There are a lot of endangered species that are on the verge of extinction, and you must embrace their existence and beauty by visiting places rich in wildlife.

Kruger offers a range of lodging choices, including affordable campsites, self-catering rest camps, and opulent lodges. This way it will become easier for you to rest and look around Africa’s wildlife. The dry season runs from May to September, and it is considered the best chance to see wildlife. There are several ways to experience it, like night drives, birding, strolling safaris, and game drives. They will help you to catch up to everything that is possible to see during that particular season.

  • Botswana's Okavango Delta

The enormous inland delta known as the Okavango Delta provides a rich and varied habitat for various forms of life. Seasonal flooding changes the terrain and provides experiences on a water-based safari unlike any other. There are different African safaris , and water-based safaris are one of them. With the help of safari experts and safety measures, you can see the beautiful sites in Okavango.

Viewing wildlife from a new angle is possible when exploring the delta's rivers by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), speedboat, or on foot. With more than 400 bird species, including kingfishers, herons, and African fish eagles, the delta is a birdwatcher's dream. It is a distinctive inland delta that provides excellent birdwatching opportunities and water-based safari experiences.

  • Botswana's Chobe National Park

Chobe is well-known for having a sizable population of elephants, especially around the Chobe River, where herds gather in great quantities during the dry season.

Boat safaris on the Chobe River give exceptional chances to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species up close. You can closely see the beauty of the bird species and other endangered species as well. Bird watching is definitely one of the activities that you must try while on Africa safaris. Also, you must know that Chobe is a convenient addition to a trip to Victoria Falls because of its proximity to the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. This way you can have a satisfactory and adventurous trip experience by visiting many places at once.

Safari Types

There are many types of African safaris, and each one of them offers a unique experience. You should know about the safaris better to experience Africa’s beauty in the best way possible.

Game Drives:

In these drives, skilled tour leaders with an in-depth understanding of the region's flora, fauna, and environment will guide you through. It takes place in open-top 4x4 vehicles that provide excellent visibility and access to diverse terrains.

The guides give another insight and improve the educational component of the safari by tracking animals and deciphering their actions.

It is considered the most suitable safari for seeing large mammals, birds, and reptiles, including the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and rhino).

Walking Safaris:

It is also done by well-trained professionals and armed guides for your protection. The extensive guides include information on tracking methods, wildlife habits, and ecological relationships. This way you learn about biodiversity and how it coexists with nature. During these safaris, importance is given to the more minute details seen in nature, like spoor (animal traces) and flora. Through walking safaris, you can learn in a better way by being up close to nature. Walking safaris are good for learning more about plants and birds (flora and fauna) as you can be close to them and see them first hand.

Boat Safaris:

The water life of Africa is also very mesmerizing, and you should experience it during your visit. The boat safari is the perfect choice for a water wildlife experience and places that have big waters around. It is carried out on lakes, rivers, deltas, including the Okavango Delta and the Chobe River in Botswana. Some of the rarest species of aquatic life can be seen in the rivers and lakes. Perfect for spotting crocodiles and hippos and taking some photos.

Other than the water wildlife, it's common to see elephants and other animals on the shore visiting the lake to drink and take baths. The boat safaris usually range from compact motorboats to huge pontoon boats depending on the amount of people on them.

Balloon Safaris:

It gives you a bird's-eye perspective of the land, enabling you to recognize its size and variety. Perfect for tracking huge herds and migratory patterns. They are usually planned for early in the morning; this offers breathtaking sunrise views and ideal lighting for photos.

The overall view of the surrounding area and its population is unmatched and through balloon safaris, you can see it. You can spot predators hunting or herds of animals traveling across the plains.

Safari Accommodations:

While planning your trip and safaris, don’t forget to check the accommodation. It is as important as the experts during your safari drives. The range of lodging alternatives is extensive, ranging from affordable campsites to opulent resorts. You can check the nearby safe accommodation options during the safaris. Let’s check out some of the best options:

It provides comfort and conveniences including eating areas, private rooms, and bathrooms with en suites. You can have gourmet dishes which will be made by experienced chefs. They often have seamless integration with the natural environment in mind, lending an air of tranquility and peace.

Tented Camps:

If you want to be well connected with nature, then you can go for permanent or semi-permanent tents furnished with basic conveniences; these locations offer a comfortable and adventurous experience. Tented campgrounds offer a special fusion of luxury and adventure, giving visitors the excitement of camping in the outdoors without compromising on necessities.

Mobile Camps:

They are usually located in isolated areas, providing a more natural and immersive experience. This allows you to have excellent animal viewing possibilities and lets visitors explore different areas of the safari region. As they are in a mobile area, they are more remote and undiscovered, offering a fully immersive experience.

Low-cost campsites:

Usually found inside or close to national parks, these sites offer basic amenities for guests on a tight budget. Budget campgrounds are more accessible to a wider variety of visitors since they don’t ask you to spend a lot on your accommodation. This way it will be easier to go on African safari with ease.

Bottom Line

If you plan to visit Africa and try an African safari, you must know some essential things like safari destinations, safari types and accommodation options. A safari in Africa is an adventure of a lifetime that offers unmatched opportunities to interact with wildlife and the natural world. You may guarantee a memorable and fulfilling vacation by meticulously organizing your trip, selecting the ideal location and time, packing sensibly, and placing a high priority on health and safety.

The standards of service are high and Kenya’s top destinations offer luxury accommodation ranging from lavish, colonial-style lodges to contemporary boutique hotels and amenity-packed resorts.

USD per person per night

South Africa’s biggest and best-known national park is home  to the country's greatest diversity of animals and exquisite safari lodges on private game reserves. As one of the oldest conservation areas in Africa, it boasts healthy populations  of wildlife and highly sought-after sightings of cheetah and wild dog. But the Kruger’s pièce de résistance is the almost guaranteed encounter with the super-celebrities of the safari circuit: Africa’s iconic Big 5.

  • Luxurious lodges with spas, gyms, private pools and star-beds
  • Virtual guarantee of seeing all the Big 5
  • 5-star service and exquisite cuisine – some of the best safari food in Africa
  • Off-road driving, spot-lit night drives and guided nature walks in private reserves

Cape Town is truly one of those ‘have-it-all’ cities. Residents are surrounded by beautiful mountains and beaches, historical landmarks, and the bottle-green valleys of the Cape Winelands; all bathed in over 3 000 hours of sunshine a year – compared to London’s 1 500 or New York City’s 2 500. Most visitors spend at least three to four days (five or six are even better) exploring South Africa’s oldest city, enjoying its smorgasbord of activities and being immersed in its incredible natural beauty.

  • Basking on sun-kissed beaches (December to March)
  • Hiking or taking the cable car up Table Mountain
  • Wine tasting in the picturesque Cape Winelands
  • The world’s best land-based whale watching (July to September)

Garden Route

The Garden Route is a must-see on the list of most visitors gracing the shores of South Africa. The beauty of this region stretches for miles from Mossel Bay to Storms River and is a self-drive destination that will beguile you with its natural beauty. It has a wonderful mix of awe-inspiring beaches, dappled forests, peaceful lagoons and quaint seaside towns. It’s easy-to-navigate roads and short driving distances makes it an ideal destination for independent, self-drive vacations. It’s also perfectly paired with safari adventures in the Eastern Cape.

  • Whale-watching in season in Hermanus, considered the best land-based whale watching in the world
  • Marvel at the Cango Caves, one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders
  • Play a round of golf at some of South Africa’s finest golf courses
  • Adventure activities from bungee jumping and boat cruises to treetop canopy tours, ziplining and kloofing

Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape’s biggest draw is its reserves. It is a Big Five, malaria-free destination that is geared for travelling families in search of safari escapades. The Eastern Cape’s best-known reserve is the Addo Elephant National Park, most famous for its gentle giants. For big cat sightings and luxurious accommodation, there are a number of private reserves that have award-winning lodges, big cat sanctuaries and some being home to the rare white lion.

  • Stress-free family safaris in luxury accommodation
  • Combines the best of both worlds with a bush and safari break
  • Big five game drives, river cruises and walking safaris
  • Cultural immersions in traditional African villages

January–March & June–October

Dry Season:

The weather is usually mild and dry from January to March, and most of the safari crowds are absent. June to October is safari’s high season; the Serengeti is busy, but weather conditions are perfect and the Wildebeest Migration’s dramatic river crossings take place. Although the sheer size of the Serengeti will give you a soul-stirring sense of space, the areas around the Migration’s river crossing points can get busy. If you want to be close to the action yet enjoy some serenity, we suggest staying in an adjacent private reserve.

Green Season:

November–December

The ‘short rains’ season relieves the dry mid-year winter. Clouds build up in the mornings and break in spectacular, but generally short-lived, showers in the late afternoons. Migrant birds return from the northern hemisphere and resident plains game give birth, which means the predator action is thrilling.

Migration Season:

December–September

The herds usually cross the Grumeti River in the western Serengeti between about May and July, then move towards the Mara River in the north to cross into the Masai Mara between about July to October. November's short rains trigger the herds  to move back to the Serengeti to give birth before calving season, which takes place from January to March and is renowned for bitter-sweet predator action.

  • Crowd-free game viewing, nature walks and off-road game drives in private game reserves
  • Custom-made safaris for every traveller type – from families and honeymooners
  • Incredible year-round game viewing, especially predators
  • The Great Wildebeest Migration (December to October)

Consider Adding …

Johannesburg

In the past, visitors whizzed through Johannesburg, stopping just long enough to catch their connecting flight. Nowadays, however, ‘Jozi’ is a destination in its own right. Boasting a fantastic selection of hotels and guest houses,  a thriving café culture and budding restaurant scene, Jozi offers its visitors a unique perspective of urban South Africa.

The Whale Coast

July to November sees the Cape Whale Coast hum with activity as migratory whales arrive from the icy Antarctic to mate and give birth in warmer waters. The town of Hermanus (just under two hours from Cape Town) lies at the centre of the whale-watching experience and is known as the world’s best land-based whale-watching destination.

KwaZulu-Natal

Home to teeming game reserves and echoing ancient battlefields, flanked by mountain peaks and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the province of KwaZulu-Natal has everything that South African holidays are famous for. Expect long golden beaches, abundant wildlife, a diverse and welcoming people, and a sunny sub-tropical climate.

High Season:

The drier winter months are the best time for game viewing on a South Africa safari in the Kruger, Madikwe, Pilanesberg and KwaZulu-Natal. Big game are usually concentrated around water sources and are easier to spot in the thinned-out vegetation. If you want to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast, then a visit between June and October is a must, with the numbers at their highest in September.

May–Oct

For a South African safari, the green season is when the landscape is a beautiful, lush emerald colour and with the best light of the year for photography. It’s calving season and there are great opportunities to witness baby animals and some dramatic predator action. For a Cape Town beach holiday, you simply can’t beat the hot summer months between November and March, but you have to book your spot well in advance for this trendy destination.

Samburu is an arrestingly beautiful, rocky landscape that heralds Kenya’s vast northern deserts.  It’s the traditional homeland of the Samburu people and a haven for the unique Special 5: Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, long-neck gerenuk and Somali ostrich.

Amboseli National Park

With its perennial wetlands flourishing beneath towering Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park is the best place in East Africa to see massive herds of elephant.  If you’re looking for that iconic postcard image of wildlife against a Kili backdrop, this is the place to get the shot.

The high plains of Laikipia are increasingly recognised as one of Kenya’s  best safari regions. It’s home to some of the country’s most encouraging conservation success stories like Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a sanctuary  for black and white rhinos as well as Grevy’s zebra.

When is it OK to take your kids out of school for vacation?

"We can’t keep taking trips during the school year because you’re getting older, and it’s getting harder to miss school," I told my daughter. But here’s the thing: I’ve been telling my 11-year-old daughter this for at least the past three years.

Every year, like so many other families, we struggle to decide whether we should take our children out of school for a family vacation. Whatever the reason might be – smaller crowds, lower prices, a great opportunity – families have lots to weigh before pulling kids out of school for a vacation during the school year.

Bring the kids: 10 best vacations for toddlers that parents will love too

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

What educators think about taking kids out of school for vacation

Mom of three and longtime educator Holly Hatcher-Frazier sees both sides of the coin. When she was in a school leadership position, she discouraged parents from taking family vacations during the school year.

“It is disruptive to learning and the curriculum is designed to account for regularly scheduled school vacations set by the administration," Hatcher-Frazier said. "Taking additional vacations throughout the school year can hinder academic progress for a student because there may be gaps in instruction due to absences.”

Easy planning: 15 family travel adventures where someone else does all the planning in 2024

However, the Pittsburgh mom who gained fame when she starred with her daughter Nia on the reality show "Dance Moms" said the emotional side creeps in when you're looking at it from the other side of family travel.

"I can find valid reasons to justify that decision and there is no denying family vacations can be incredibly educational, worthwhile experiences. However, weighing the advantages and disadvantages of pulling kids out of school for family vacations, I would still err on the side of resisting the urge. Of course, there are extenuating circumstances that may be once-in-a-lifetime opportunities which need to be considered."

That’s exactly what happened to my family. We were given a chance to travel on an Adventures by Disney trip to South Africa. The 10-day trip was packed with amazing experiences , including safaris, first-hand accounts of apartheid and Nelson Mandela, and African cultural experiences. It was an opportunity we couldn't pass up, even though it meant taking the kids out of school to do it.

Tips for taking your kids out of school for a trip

The problem was the trip was scheduled for right after the school year started. In situations like this, Hatcher-Frazier said if you decide to take the trip, you should talk to school officials as soon as possible.

"Telling the school the day before that your child will be missing school for a week for a family vacation does not usually sit well for many," she said.

Hatcher-Frazier also noted that it's not a fair expectation to assume teachers will prepare work ahead of time for your child for unexcused absences.

"Curating lesson plans for an individual child is creating more work for a teacher in addition to the teachers' regular responsibilities, lesson plans and workload," she explained. "If parents treat the school officials with reasonable expectations, courtesy, and respect, then I think most schools will try their best to work together with parents to ensure the success of the child."

Family travel adventures: 11 best tour operators for family tours in 2024

Once I saw the itinerary for our trip to South Africa, I knew there would be no time for schoolwork. It was a jam-packed family trip, but it was filled with activities that included some extraordinary form of learning every single day. And from the first day of the trip I knew we made the right decision to experience this family vacation, even though it meant missing school.

Every day was filled with educational experiences, from something as simple as learning that traffic lights in South Africa are called robots to finding out the meaning behind all the colors of the South African flag. The animal interactions on the trip were unreal, and with them came lessons on the lions, giraffes, monkeys, and everything else we saw.

By the end of our first safari ride, my three kids were even able to tell which animal left the droppings we saw. They were also taught how to make a toothbrush out of tree branches and what tree bark can be ground down to make toothpaste. There was tons of information thrown at my children, and I do wonder what they will retain. My daughter kept a daily journal, which I know we’ll all continue to look back on to help remind us what we learned and how we learned it.

The benefits of trusting your gut

Once we returned home, there was some makeup work that needed to be done, but everyone, including my kids' teachers and school administrators, agreed this was an incredible experience.

Hatcher-Frazier said, in the end, trust your gut.

"You know your child best and whether or not this is a vacation that can't wait until an upcoming school break. Parents need to consider the consequences of their child missing school. Does your child work independently? Most likely, your child will have to do work on their own without the help of an instructor or in-class discussion if they miss class. Does your child take initiative?"

Kid-friendly: 19 best family resorts and hotels in the U.S. for 2024

Truth be told, in the weeks after the trip, my daughter struggled a bit with all the makeup work. There were some nights when I questioned if we made the right decision because I hated seeing her so stressed. In the future, I’m not sure we’ll be so quick to take our children out of school for a trip we can easily reschedule. However, if another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity arises, we’ll give it careful consideration.

Once all the work was made up, my daughter told me she would 100% do the trip again. As a family, I think we made the right choice. We have amazing memories we talk about daily. The family vacation allowed us to make friends with people from all over the world whom we otherwise would have never met, and it taught my children to differentiate between rhino poop and zebra poop – a lesson I don’t think they’ll ever learn in the classroom.
