Cruising the Zambezi River

The impressive Zambezi River, which translates as ‘Great River’ in the local Tonga dialect, is Africa’s fourth-largest waterway and flows an astonishing 2,000 kilometres through six spectacular countries. Emerging in the Mwinilunga District in northwest Zambia, the Zambezi courses majestically through Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, where it empties into the Indian Ocean. The Zambezi’s waters cascade down magnificent waterfalls at different points along the river, including at the mighty Victoria Falls – Zambia’s sparkling showpiece. This magnificent waterway is also drenched in spirituality as the local Tsonga people believe that it is the residence of Nyami Nyami, the guardian and god of the River Valley. Legend has it that the construction of the massive Kariba Dam gave rise to the wrath of Nyami Nyami and his wife, who used their divine powers to cause regular floods and deaths in the area. A wildlife hotspot, the Zambezi River runs through countless reserves and national parks which are home to exotic creatures including lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, hippos and zebras. Zambezi river cruises tend to navigate their way solely through Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, frequenting both the upper and lower sections of the river.

Why choose Zambezi river cruises

The pristine Zambezi River evokes feelings of awe and mystery, immersing cruisers in the colourful heartlands of Africa and revealing a sumptuous world of vibrant culture and natural beauty. A luxury Zambezi river cruise brings travellers up close to diverse wildlife and luscious vegetation, creating an intimate and truly authentic experience. Vessels such as the African Queen and African Princess cruise along the peaceful waters at sunset, offering stunning views of the African evening skies. There is also the option of embarking on a breakfast or lunchtime cruise, for example onboard the MV Makumbi or MV Mambushi, and boats such as the Zambezi Explorer are decked out in luxury furnishings and provide a first-class service. The Zambezi is dotted with a number of river lodges from which many cruise boats leave. Travellers can stay overnight at a lodge such as the David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa at Victoria Falls or the Masumu River Lodge in Binga, before hopping aboard a peaceful excursion up the beautiful Zambezi River.

Zambezi river cruises: Countries of the Zambezi River

The vast majority of the Zambezi River flows through the friendly nation of Zambia, which takes its name from the enormous waterway. Zambia is situated in central Africa and is landlocked by eight neighbouring countries. This hospitable country is synonymous with extraordinary natural landscapes, an abundance of rich wildlife and serene rural villages. Zambia is the proud owner of the glorious Victoria Falls, one of the world’s largest collections of waterfalls, which gush down jagged rock faces at the country’s border with Zimbabwe and is definitely a must-see on any Zambezi river cruise.

Zimbabwe is largely made up of tropical grasslands called savanna and has a high concentration of diverse wildlife. It is home to the exquisite Hwange National Park which stretches along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls railway line towards the Botswana border. Here, you can find anything from elephants, giraffes and hippopotamuses to mamba snakes, eagles and baboons. There is a melting pot of cultures that co-exist in Zimbabwe, the largest ethnic group being the Shona people. This vibrant country entices curious visitors with its enchanting scenery, unique traditions and complex history. Immerse yourself on a Zambezi river cruise in Zimbabwe.

Botswana forms a semi-triangular shape in the centre of southern Africa and is landlocked by Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. It is blessed with vast expanses of unspoiled natural land where elephants, lions and leopards roam freely, and gentle streams run within fossil river valleys. The famous Kalahari Desert sweeps across Botswana, from the salt plains of Makgadikgadi to the conservation area of Kgalagadi in the south. Botswana is also a nation steeped in spiritual values and rituals, where you can learn about the fascinating lifestyles of the country’s rural tribes on a Zambezi cruise.

Zambezi river cruises: Ports of the Zambezi River

Livingstone.

The laid-back town of Livingstone is situated on the Zambian side of the otherworldly Victoria Falls. It is the perfect base from which to explore this roaring natural phenomenon from countless different perspectives. Feel like you’re on top of the world while walking along Knife Edge Bridge which is located at the precipice of the falls, offering astonishing views of the main gorge. For those seeking a more exhilarating experience, jump on a helicopter and hold on tight as it swoops wildly above the gorge revealing breathtaking aerial views of the Falls. Daredevils on a Zambezi river cruise will rejoice at the opportunity to make the hair-raising trip to Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island. Here, brave travellers can bathe in the world’s scariest infinity pool at the very edge of Victoria Falls before following an extensive tour of the island; it is an experience you will never forget. Located just below the Falls you’ll find the marvellous Batoka Gorge. If you still haven’t quite satisfied your thirst for adventure on your luxury Zambezi river cruise, Batoka is the prime location for trying out nail-biting activities such as ziplining 120 kilometres across the canyon or hurtling down the steep cliffside towards the Zambezi river from the Gorge Swing on the Victoria Falls Bridge and Zim Zam bridges above. Other thrilling activities around Victoria Falls include hiking down to Boiling Point and taking a dip underneath the Falls and quadbiking around the town of Livingstone.

Mosi-Oa-Tunya and Victoria Falls National Parks

Nestled between Livingstone town and the Zambezi River is the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. This small wildlife sanctuary is the only area in Zambia inhabited by the white rhino, protected from poachers by armed guards under the Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Mosi-Oa-Tunya translates to ‘The Smoke Which Thunders’ and was christened as such because it lies in the shadow of the thundering Victoria Falls. Despite its small size, Mosi-Oa-Tunya is teeming with magnificent animals. Visitors can climb into an off-road truck and rattle through the park on a half-day safari spotting rhinos, elephants, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, buffalos, hippos and crocodiles. One of the park’s main draws is its fabulous open-air Elephant Café from where travellers can relax in the shade with a cool drink or warm meal while a heard of rescued elephants stroll peacefully outside, a must-do on a Zambezi river cruise.

The Victoria Falls National Park sprawls out on the Zimbabwean side of the imposing waterfalls. Stroll through the cobblestone pathways of dense, steamy rainforest and look out for lions, waterbucks, monkeys and antelopes. There are leafy clearings at scattered points across the park from where you can experience striking views of the Falls. Check this destination off your bucket list while on your Zambezi river cruise.

Lake Kariba

The MV Zambezi Adventurer recently launched a new cruising vessel that ventures into Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe and glides up to the town of Binga. The shimmering Lake Kariba is situated on the south bank of the Zambezi River and has risen in prominence over the last few years owing to the construction of the great Kariba Dam. These waters are extremely biodiverse thanks to the area’s fertile soils and various species of fish, crocodile and hippo inhabit its silky depths. Tranquil lake cruises on board the MV Matusadona involve moorings at the scenic Sanyati Gorge, the isolated outcrop of Elephant Point, where you can spot elephants and rhinos at Rhino Safari Camp, and visit the heavenly islands of Tashinga and Partridge. From the Kariba Lake on your Zambezi river cruise, you can also hop on to one of the smaller tender boats and explore the channels that lead into Matusadona National Park which is home to lions, leopard and buffalo.

On the south-eastern end of Lake Kariba sits the charming fishing village of Binga. The town is largely inhabited by the Tonga people who previously lived in settlements along the Zambezi River. Binga offers cruisers a fascinating insight into the traditional cultures and riverside lifestyles of the Tonga who sustain themselves via their thriving handicraft industry. At every turn you will see stalls selling baskets, beads, drums and hand-carved pieces of furniture. Cultural tours of this gentle little village are available, during which cruisers on a Zambezi cruise can visit the town’s museum which documents the history of the crafts industry in Binga and you can even interact with the village’s sociable residents.

The Chobe National Park

The four great African nations of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe meet at the confluence of the Chobe River and Zambezi. Resting within the border of Botswana you’ll find the enormous Chobe National Park. Here, you will feel as if you have been transported into a wildlife paradise as you glide along the Chobe River, through the marshy floodplains and verdant grasslands of the Savuti Marsh and the spindly leakwood trees of the Savuti Channel: this is where Africa’s largest population of elephants congregates to drink, and swathes of buffalo graze grassy patches along the banks. The list of wildlife here is endless and boat trips along the waterways of the Chobe National Park allow visitors to come within tantalising distance of stunning beasts such as crocodiles and hippos. Make sure your camera is charged for this epic adventure as you will undoubtedly return with some exceptional snaps from Zambezi river cruise.

Lower Zambezi Valley

As the Zambezi River winds eastward from Victoria Falls and the Batoka Gorge, it widens to become the Lower Zambezi Valley. This watery wonderland is a critical source of life for the hundreds of wild creatures who drink from the river and laze about in the dazzling African sun. On your Zambezi river cruise expect to see hippos, buffalos, impala, waterbucks, zebras, leopards, lions, wild dogs and countless more as you cruise around oxbow-shaped lagoons and along sandy riverbanks. If you’re keen to stretch your legs away from the water, exercise your calves on the long hike to the idyllic Chongwe Falls. Climb up rocky slopes and down to the gigantic pool at the base of the Falls and watch out for the crocodiles that lurk in the emerald-coloured waters. On the southern banks of the lower Zambezi, you will find the biodiverse paradise that is Mana Pools National Park. This is one of the most remote areas along the Zambezi and as a result there is an extremely high concentration of wild animals. Elephants relax in the shade beneath beautiful acacia trees and hippos wallow in the park’s four large lakewater pools.

Zambezi river cruises: Best things to do on the Zambezi River

Embark on a sunset cruise.

Sunset cruises are a fantastic way to see the wonders of the Zambezi River in the glow of the honey-hued evening light. The Zambezi Royal, River Song, Zambezi Explorer, Ra Ilkane and River Safaris’ Victoria and Darter vessels offer sunset cruises with a range of amenities. Passengers are able to dine on board, enjoying delicious food while watching the bustling wildlife that surrounds them. A Zambezi sunset river cruise is a once in a lifetime experience that shouldn't be missed!

Go white-water rafting

The Zambezi river is resplendent with whitewater rapids, particularly around the Victoria Falls area. These rapids range from grade I to grade V and have been christened with fear-inducing nicknames such as the Devil’s Toilet Bowl and the Gnashing Jaws of Death. Rafting companies can be found all around Victoria Falls, including Bundu Adventures, Wild Horizons and Zambezi Rafting. Daredevils will love these opportunities off of their Zambezi cruise.

Enjoy a canoe safari

Get up close and personal with the Zambezi’s majestic river life by embarking on a canoe safari. Via canoe you can reach the more remote areas of the river and glide alongside large land mammals that can be found along its banks. Committed canoeists can even camp in tents alongside the river while on multi-day canoe excursions.

The Zambezi River is bursting with a multitude of species of fish and a common activity on board a river cruise boat is to try out some fly-fishing. The Upper Zambezi is renowned for its swarms of tigerfish who flourish in the river’s fresh waters. Tigerfish are a real prize catch and can weigh up to 15 kilograms. In the Lower Zambezi and around Lake Kariba you will be able to fish off of your Zambezi cruise for giant Vundu catfish. These shy creatures habitually lurk at the bottom of the river.

Experience the Kuomboka festival

Zambia’s lively Kuomboka festival is the nation’s most famous traditional ceremony and takes places at the end of the rainy season when the upper Zambezi River plains flood. The colourful Lozi people migrate from these plains to higher land in long black and white striped wooden canoes – the Nalikwanda. A vast model elephant is placed onboard, alongside Lintunga paddlers wearing a headdress consisting of a scarlet beret with a piece of lion’s mane and a long skirt made from animal skins. The day before the procession, you will hear the loud beats of the Maoma drums which signal that the procession is about to begin. Don't miss this amazing experience on a Zambezi river cruise!

The mighty Zambezi River is truly a one-of-a-kind destination. Affectionately known as Southern Africa’s “ River of Life, ” this awe-inspiring waterway captures the hearts of any traveler once they get a glimpse of it.

Acting as a natural border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, it has supported life here for thousands of years. To make things better, it continues to sustain both the people living around the river and the vast array of animal life.

As you tour Africa , there will no doubt be a few destinations that you’ll want to tick off on your bucket list. We firmly believe that the Zambezi should be one of them. And what better way to do so than with a scenic Zambezi River Cruise?

Highlights:

  • Enjoy seeing a vast array of animal life as you cruise down the river.
  • Soak up the stunning views across the river at sunset.
  • Enjoy a delicious 3 or 4-course meal on a sunset cruise.

Know before you book:

  • Ticket prices don’t include park fees of $10 per person.
  • Not all tours include drinks and snacks.
  • Some tours only offer hotel pickup and dropoff for visitors who start in Victoria Falls Town lodges or hotels.

The Zambezi River is the fourth longest river in Africa. While it’s most notable for its presence in Zambia and Zimbabwe, it actually flows through six different countries. The other four include Angola, Namibia, and Botswana, before eventually flowing out into the Indian Ocean Delta in Mozambique.

In Zambia and Zimbabwe, the river stretches for over 310 miles (500 km) and is separated into the Upper, Middle, and Lower Zambezi River sections.

Its most notable feature is the thundering and spectacular Victoria Falls , which locals call “Smoke that Thunder.,” It’s also the source of other waterfalls, including the Chuvama Falls and Ngonye Falls.

The Zambezi River is one of great contrasts. In some areas, such as the Batoka Gorge, it is extremely fast-flowing, making it a popular spot for white river rafting. On the flip side, other parts of the river are quite slow-moving, making it more suitable for Zambezi river cruises.

So we’ve taken it upon ourselves to round up the best cruises for an epic adventure along the Zambezi. From sunset dinner cruises to simplistic boat rides, you’re in for a good time.

The classic sunset cruise was a great ending for our day at Victoria Falls. We were taken directly from our Accomodation to the cruise ship where we shortly sailed to the sunset. The staff on board was very helpful and almost immediately served us some cocktails. And you can have as many as you can handle. There also snacks that you can enjoy with your drinks. During the trip we saw different species of birds, crocodiles, and hippos. The sunset was beautiful. You should be aware that it last only a couple of minutes on this latitude.

A wonderful experience. Dancers to see us off, knowledgeable guides who showed us the birdlife. Lots of hippos close by. An elephant chewing away and the most incredible sunset. Plenty of drinks and some tasty snacks to keep you going. Warthog snuffling around when we got back. Beautiful, relaxing evening with some incredible photo opportunities.

Cruise Into European Legend With This Family-Owned River Cruise Line

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Scenery Boat Transportation Vehicle Water Boating Leisure Activities and Sport

Amid the meanders of Europe's storied rivers, where mist-kissed mornings yield to vineyard-clad hillsides and turreted castles pierce the sky, you'll find AmaWaterways riding the current. For over two decades, this family-owned company has been crafting extraordinary journeys along Europe's liquid highways, elevating river cruising with each passing season. The AmaWaterways saga, born in 2002 from the shared dream of three families, is as rich and layered with personal touches as the cultures they traverse. Even cofounder and President Rudi Schreiner, who grew up in Vienna along the Danube River, infuses each itinerary with the intimate memories of his homeland, proof of the insider knowledge that has always propelled AmaWaterways to the vanguard of river cruising.

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Scenery Photography Rock Cliff Clothing Footwear Shoe Adventure and Hiking

As the company's renown has blossomed like springtime along the Rhine, so too has its fleet. Today, AmaWaterways' 26 vessels glide along the waterways of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Each ship is a floating sanctuary of sophistication, meticulously curated to amplify every facet of your sojourn. Step aboard, and you'll immediately sense the AmaWaterways difference. The attentive crew pampers guests with an industry-leading ratio and transforms your journey into an intimate, boutique experience. From remembering your preferred wine at dinner to orchestrating surprise celebrations, their dedication to crafting unforgettable moments is unmatched. This commitment to excellence extends to every facet of life on board, particularly in the realm of gastronomy. Indeed, AmaWaterways has elevated river cruise dining to an art form. Multiple included restaurants serve locally sourced gourmet cuisine, each dish a canvas painted with regional flavors. At The Chef's Table, the kitchen—usually hidden to diners—becomes part of the entertainment. Watch in awe as the chefs conjure a multi-course feast before your eyes, each plate paired with hand-selected wines that flow as freely as the rivers outside – and everything offered with AmaWaterways’ compliments.

But be it culinary, wine, or wellness, the passion for immersion doesn't end at the ship's rail. Gone are the days when river cruising catered only to passive sightseers. AmaWaterways offers up to eight included excursions daily, ensuring that every traveler—from history buffs to fitness enthusiasts—can craft their perfect adventure. Knowledgeable local guides unveil the secrets of grand capitals and charming villages alike, while a fleet of complimentary bicycles opens up a world of two-wheeled exploration, whether you'd like to cruise through sun-dappled vineyards or among distant spires of medieval towns piercing the horizon. The company's commitment to wellness, overseen by former Ironman participant Selina Wank, extends from onboard complimentary fitness classes to shore excursions. For those who prefer a gentler pace, leisurely walking tours balance cultural insights with comfort, while “late riser” excursions cater to guests who value a relaxed morning as much as they do exploration.

As diverse as the experiences you'll have are the special-interest tours catering to a wealth of passions. Culinary enthusiasts can find themselves knotting pretzels in Wertheim, Germany, or uncovering hidden gastronomic gems in Vienna's lesser-known neighborhoods. Wine aficionados can revel in AmaWaterways' Celebration of Wine River Cruises , where expert hosts guide you through exclusive tastings and renowned vineyards; liquid journeys through terroir, where Old World classics mingle with New World innovations. AmaWaterways also offers specialty cruises that dive deep into specific heritage and traditions. The Soulful Experiences itineraries, for example, highlight Black history and culture along Europe's waterways like exploring the history of the Black and African diaspora in Lisbon and along the Douro River, while Latin Touch cruises cater to Spanish-speaking travelers.

Just as the rivers change with the seasons, so too do AmaWaterways' carefully curated itineraries unfold their unique charms year-round. Winter transforms Europe into a magical wonderland, where Budapest's outdoor ice rinks glisten against a backdrop of steaming thermal baths. As frost gives way to bloom, spring heralds a revival of both nature and culture, with legendary gardens bursting to life and seasonal delicacies like Germany's prized white asparagus gracing menus. Summer voyages harness the energy of long, sun-drenched days, leading guests to off-the-beaten-path towns inaccessible to larger vessels. Extended daylight hours and overnight stays in select cities invite leisurely exploration, while thoughtful amenities like chilled towels and artisanal ice cream offer respite from the summer heat. Revolutionary vessel AmaMagna —twice the width of traditional river ships—redefines the essence of cruising with unprecedented spaciousness in its expansive Zen Wellness Studio, where the boundaries between ship and sky blur on the Sun Deck, and spirited bouts of pickleball are played with newfound companions.

For those captivated by France following 2024's sporting spectacular, AmaWaterways offers a trio of enchanting itineraries throughout the rest of the year and next. Paris & Normandy weaves together the City of Light's romance with Normandy's poignant history. Taste of Bordeaux guides oenophiles through vineyards and centuries-old châteaux, contrasting the grandeur of Roquetaillade Castle with Saint-Émilion's pastoral charm. Flavors of Burgundy elevates culinary travel to an art form, offering wine tastings in picturesque locales along the scenic Saône River. As 2025 dawns, AmaWaterways charts new waters with three grand 14-night river cruises, designed for travelers thirsting for deeper immersion. Grand Seine & Rhône marries French history, art, and gastronomy across three iconic rivers, a flowing feast for the senses. Grand Seine & Bordeaux expands this sensory journey to include the Garonne and Dordogne, while Grand Rhine & Dutch Canals invites guests on a five-country odyssey from the Netherlands to Switzerland.

Yet among this cornucopia of classic and debut voyages, it's the inaugural Best of the Danube itinerary that has captured the heart of cofounder Rudi Schreiner, crowning it his top pick for 2025. This 7-night round-trip cruise from Budapest promises the quintessential Danube experience, gliding through the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley and exploring grand capitals like Vienna and Bratislava. AmaWaterways' pioneering spirit, however, knows no bounds as 2026 heralds the arrival of AmaSofia on the Rhine and Danube. If there's one thing to note about AmaWaterways, it's that each journey is designed to show you a destination with all five senses—beyond sightseeing to sightfeeling .

As you contemplate your next European adventure, consider the unparalleled experience of an AmaWaterways river cruise. With limited availability on new itineraries and seasonal cruises, now is the time to secure your place on these extraordinary journeys. Contact your preferred travel advisor or visit AmaWaterways.com to reserve your stateroom today.

Rocky River classic car cruise-in revs up with a reminder to be kind

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- The vintage vehicles on display at the Cruising River Car Cruise Sunday (Aug. 18) clearly were all owned by true classic car enthusiasts.

Mike Parry, one of the organizers, said there have been as many as 60 to 75 owners showing their cars at the annual cruise-in through the years.

There were no judges or awards this year, but past cruise-ins sometimes awarded a $50 door prize.

Parry said judges, when they do come, often look at the interiors and engine compartments. They even use mirrors to see underneath the cars.

Rocky River United Methodist Church hosted the event, partnering with the nearby Beachcliff Market Square shopping center to share parking lot spaces for visitors.

“The night before preparing for the cruise, we rope off the parking lot at the church, as it is only for the cruisers,” Parry said.

But there is plenty of room for visitors to walk around and view all the cars.

Parry also gives credit to Rocky River UMC Senior Pastor Daniel Bogre.

“He has been supportive and has seen the value of the car cruise as an outreach to connect with our community, just as we have concerts for the community, for example,” Parry said.

Standing in between many of the cars was Zora Mihalic, a 10-year old who started her own “Kindness Club” in 2023.

She takes donations so that she can buy lovely beads to make the bracelets she displays on a small table beside her grandfather’s antique car.

She hands them out with a kindness message to all who donate to her cause.

She said she wants the hand-made bracelets to remind the wearers to be kind.

Hosting 82 guests in 41 staterooms, the new Viking Hathor is inspired by Viking’s award-winning river and ocean ships with the elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known. An identical sister ship to the Viking Osiris and the Viking Aton , the Viking Hathor features several aspects familiar to Viking guests, such as a distinctive square bow and an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace. Additional ships in the Egypt fleet include the Viking Ra and the MS Antares .

Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids Itinerary

During the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, guests begin with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where they can visit iconic sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, or the Grand Egyptian Museum. Guests then fly to Luxor, where they visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before boarding a Viking river ship for an eight-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River, featuring visits to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, the temples at Abu Simbel and the High Dam in Aswan, and a visit to a colorful Nubian village, where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the ancient city.

Viking is rated #1 for Rivers, as well as #1 for Oceans and #1 for Expeditions, by Condé Nast Traveler in the most recent Readers’ Choice Awards. Recently, the Viking Aton was also named one of the “Best New Cruises” in Condé Nast Traveler’s “Hot List 2024,” and the Viking Osiris was named one of the “Best New Cruises” in the “Hot List 2023,” as well as the “Best Luxury River Cruise of 2024” in Forbes’ “Best Luxury Cruises” list. Additionally, TIME magazine featured both Giza and Saqqara on its “World’s Greatest Places” 2023 list, mentioning sailing the Nile River with Viking. TIME notes that Viking is among the very few who stop in both Giza and the village of Sakkara, where excavation sites, like the megatombs of animal and human mummies, are active.

For guests looking to extend their journey in Egypt, Viking also offers Pre and Post Extensions that provide Privileged Access to archives and exhibits. Guests on the five-day British Collections of Ancient Egypt extension will begin the journey in London, where they will meet their Viking Tour Director, an expert Egyptologist, and experience Privileged Access to two museums: first a private, early morning visit to the Egyptian Collection at the British Museum before it opens to the general public – and then a visit to the home and personal museum of world-renowned architect, Sir John Soane, where the tour will be illuminated by candlelight, a re-enactment of how Soane entertained guests and showcased his exquisite collection of Egyptian antiquities, including a 3,000-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus. Guests will also visit London’s Petrie Museum, which houses more than 80,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt and Sudan. In Oxford, guests will visit the Ashmolean Museum, one of the oldest in the world, and home to a varied collection of Egyptian mummies and art—and go behind the scenes at Oxford University’s Griffith Institute, where they will enjoy a Privileged Access visit to see Howard Carter’s archives, which detail the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Lastly, guests will have further Privileged Access with an exclusive visit to Highclere Castle to view the Earl of Carnarvon’s magnificent private collection of Egyptian artifacts, as well as archives and exhibits not normally accessible to the public.

Additional offerings include a three-night Pre-Extension in Istanbul , where guests can visit the timeless city and important religious sites including the “Blue Mosque” and the legendary Hagia Sophia. After concluding the river voyage, guests can also extend the journey with a 4-night Post-Extension to Jordan—Petra, Dead Sea & Amman to view Roman antiquities at Jerash, Crusader-era castles at Kerak or Shobak and experience the lost city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
