cultural tours of sicily

Tours of Sicily that span millennia of history, art & culture: from the classic world of ancient Greece to the theatrics of the Baroque era; Roman mosaics to the shining examples of those from Arab and Norman times; from the esteemed ancient Greek ceramics to 19 th  Century Sicilian versions; masterpieces by Caravaggio and Antonello da Messina and then to those which immortalised Sicily by local artists of the 20 th Century.

Our Tours of Sicily journey through Unesco World Heritage sites and bring us before the finest works of some of the greatest artistic masters of all time. Framed by fantastic Sicilian food, breathtaking views from the coast to mountain peaks and the hospitality of the Sicilian people, our tours present the opportunity to enjoy the experience together with a small group of people who love art and culture just like you.

Our group sizes are always intimate so you will never feel like just another number on an overcrowded tour. Our mission is to ensure you have the most enriching experience imaginable.

TOUR LEADERS

cultural tours of sicily

Eolo Paul Bottaro

Sicilian australian artist.

I am an Australian artist of Italian-Sicilian descent. My parents left Sicily in the late '60s and even though I was born and grew up in Australia, Sicily has always been strongly present both in my life and my artistic production, which has been inspired by the Italian Masters of the Renaissance. In the last 10 years I have travelled back and forth from Italy and Sicily in particular, where I have established a studio and a home. Through the years, I have travelled Sicily deeply and extensively nevertheless, this powerful island still surprises me with its endless amount of art, culture, history and beauty.

cultural tours of sicily

Serena Firera

Sicilian travel designer.

I was born in Sicily and I have lived on the island most of my life. After a master’s degree in psychology at the University of Rome, I worked in publishing and the private education sector as a specialist in educational psychology. Meanwhile, whenever I could, I was travelling the world. Travel, art and different cultures have always been my passion. I lived in Australia for over a year in my early 30s and when I returned to Sicily, I realized I could not work behind a desk anymore. So, at the age of 34 I quit my job and decided I was going to share my love for Sicily with the rest of the World.

Day 1  - Catania

You will be picked up at Catania Airport and then we will settle into our hotel right in the heart of Catania. In the evening, there is a tour of the old town.  Catania preserves many great examples of baroque architecture, for this reason it was inserted into the UNESCO World Heritage list of Val di Noto in 2002. The Catania’s baroque particularity is found in the use of the black lava stone, sourced from Etna, Europe‘s largest active volcano. Catania also hosts several ancient hidden treasures, such as the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre from 300 B.C., an open-air archaeological excavation.

[Overnight in Catania]

Day 2 - Messina & Taormina

In the morning we visit the Interdisciplinary Regional Museum of Messina, the biggest museum in Southern Italy. 7,855 pieces (of which 750 are exposed) are housed within its 4,160 square metres. It is the custodian of many works by famous artists such as Caravaggio (‘The Adoration of the Shepherds’ and ‘Resurrection of Lazarus’ - two of Caravaggio’s last paintings), Antonello da Messina, and Domenico Gagini. The pieces, which range from paintings to architectural remains, are displayed in chronological order, allowing visitors to really appreciate and delve into each century’s artistic characteristics. In the evening we visit the ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina, built in the 3rd Century BC, today it is one of the most recogniseable and spectacular examples of Ancient Greek Theatres. [Overnight in Catania]

Day 3 - Syracuse

On Day 3 we visit Ortigia, a small island just off the coast of the city of Syracuse, where it is possible to see everything from Medieval-Norman buildings and Baroque masterpieces, to Roman and Greek ruins. We will have the opportunity to see the amazing painting “The Burial of Saint Lucy” by Caravaggio, which hangs in the Duomo di Santa Lucia. We will also visit the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Bellomo with its rich collection of works. Antonello da Messina’s painting is one of the most famous and interesting: it represents the perfect balance of Flemish painting components, clever use of geometrical perspective and the huge dimensions typical of the classical Italian Renaissance style. [Overnight in Syracuse]

Day 4 - Modica, Ibla, Scicli

On day 4 we visit the picturesque baroque towns of Modica, Ragusa Ibla and Scicli, all UNESCO World Heritage sites. In 1693 a catastrophic earthquake desecrated many towns in the south-east of Sicily, including these three. In the years following the earthquake, the towns were rebuilt in a style which is today recognised as 'Sicilian Baroque'. What makes Sicilian Baroque unique is the theatrical, dramatic features which are meant to intrigue the viewer and give the sense of being on the stage of a theatre. Over the past decade, these beautiful towns have become well-known due to the popularity of the TV series “Inspector Montalbano”, based on Andrea Camilleri’s novels.

[Overnight in Modica]

Day 5 - Villa Romana and The Valley of the Temples

In the morning we visit Villa Romana del Casale, where excavations unearthed one of the richest, largest and most varied collections of Roman mosaics in the world, for which the site has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The villa and its mosaics date back to the early 4th century AD. The mosaic and opus sectile floors cover some 3,500 square metres and are quite unique in their excellent state of preservation due to the landslide and floods that had covered the ruin. In the afternoon, we head towards Agrigento, after we have settled in at the hotel, we will take a night-time tour of The Valley of the Temples, one of the greatest examples of ancient Greek art and architecture in the World. The Valley includes remains of seven temples in Doric style and is another UNESCO World Heritage site.

[Overnight in Agrigento]

Day 6 - Polizzi Generosa

We leave Agrigento and head towards Polizzi Generosa, a lovely village set 917 metres above sea level in the Madonie Natural Park. We will be staying at The Sicilian House, a beautiful and historic noble home fully restored by a Sicilian-Australian family. In Polizzi Generosa’s Chiesa Madre, glimpsed through an ornate set of iron gates, there is a precious triptych with beautiful Flemish detail, attributed to the 15 th  century Flemish master Rogier van der Weyden, an absolute must-see when touring Sicily. The town also has a lovely Archaeological Museum, filled with Hellenistic burial treasures. This significant local museum also shows us something of Polizzi Generosa’s history of pottery and terracotta, which still continues to this day. Third generation ceramist Giovanni D'Angelo continues this tradition as a labour of love - we will visit his workshop just outside the village.  [Overnight in Polizzi Generosa]

Day 7 - Cefalù

The drive itself, through the Madonie Natural Park and towards the coastal town of Cefalù, will bring some spectacular panoramic views. The Madonie Mountains are known as the Alps of Sicily (they peak at almost 2,000 metres) and, being an unspoilt area with some of the greatest examples of biodiversity in the world, they are now protected. We will spend the day visiting Cefalù, with its Norman cathedral; a 12th-century fortress-like structure with elaborate Byzantine mosaics and soaring twin towers, included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing. Only a few steps from the cathedral is the Mandralisca Museum. This small, privately owned museum showcases a collection amassed by parliamentarian, archaeologist and natural-history buff, Baron Mandralisca (1809–64). The museum showcases Antonello da Messina's splendid Ritratto di un uomo ignoto (Portrait of an Unknown Man; 1465), considered one of the most distinctive portraits of the Italian Renaissance. Acquired by the Baron after he discovered it being used as a makeshift cupboard door in Lipari, da Messina's painting depicts a man with an enigmatic smirk, almost as captivating and thought provoking as the Mona Lisa. [Overnight in Polizzi Generosa]

Day 8 - Monreale

In the morning we visit the Cathedral of Monreale, one of the most delightful examples of Arab-Norman architecture. With its cycle of mosaics on golden ground and its extraordinary cloister, the cathedral can proudly claim a place in the highest ranks of Europe's art history. Since 2015 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing.

After a guided tour of the cathedral, we settle into our hotel in Palermo, a city rich in history, culture, art, music and food, founded in 734 BC by the Phoenicians. Through its history Palermo has been dominated for over a thousand years by Carthage, the Greeks and the Roman Republic and Empire. From 831 to 1072 the city was under Arab rule, after which there was the Norman domination. The Spanish and the French have also ruled Palermo in its more recent history, until it became part of Italy. All of these dominations are very evident in Palermo’s amazing architecture, art, culture, cuisine and people. [Overnight in Palermo]

Day 9 - Palermo

Our last day of the Grand Tour of Sicily will be fully dedicated to Palermo. We will visit:

  • Palazzo Abatellis, home to the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia. The museum's most famous work is the Virgin Annunciate by Antonello da Messina (15th century), considered a masterpiece of High Renaissance paintings. The museum also contains the amazing fresco “The Triumph of Death” created in the 15th Century by an unknown artist and considered a masterpiece of the time.
  • The Oratorio di San Lorenzo, where Giacomo Serpotta created a sumptuous stucco decoration. The oratory is particularly famous because of the masterpiece Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence by Caravaggio. This prestigious painting was stolen on October 18, 1969 and has never been recovered. In 2015 a hi-tech replica of the altarpiece was placed inside the oratory.
  • The unique Cappuccini Catacombs. These catacombs contain around 1,252 mummies which line the walls. The tombs were accessible to families of the dead so that on certain days they, both living and deceased family members, could join their hands in prayer. [Overnight in Palermo]

Day 10 - Goodbye Sicily

Our Grand Tour of Sicily comes to an end. An immersive cultural experience which will have taken us to some of the most amazing art, architecture and archaeological sites in the world. With the backdrop of the beautiful Sicilian landscape, from seascapes to mountain peaks - the delicious food and the warmth of the Sicilian people framing our trip to perfection. You can leave the island either from the airports in Palermo or Catania, both have direct flights to all major Italian and European cities. Thank you for touring Sicily with us and see you for the next cultural adventure!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the best way to explore Sicily?

There are many reasons that visiting Sicily as part of an organised tour is preferable to doing it by yourself. It’s not a matter of safety, Sicily is a very safe place with millions of tourists travelling across the island every year. Firstly, doing it this way guarantees seeing the best of the island in a limited amount of time: we have explored Sicily extensively over the last ten years and as a result this tour has been designed to present the best cultural experiences the island has to offer. Secondly, getting around by means of public transport is rather challenging due to the fact that services on the island leave a lot to be desired; meaning you could end up waiting hours before a bus or train arrives. Driving is not without its drawbacks either since many roads are not well-maintained and Sicilians have what can only be described as an unconventional style of driving!

Can you explore Sicily without a car?

Yes, you can, but getting around by means of public transport is rather challenging due to the fact that services on the island leave a lot to be desired; meaning you could end up waiting hours before a bus or train arrives.

How many days do you need to see Sicily?

It depends on how much you want to see.

Usually a minimum of 10/12 days is needed to see Sicily's most important attractions both on the Western and Eastern part of the Island.

What do you do in 5 days in Sicily?

If you have 5 days to visit Sicily, choose a specific area of the island to visit. Here are some ideas:

  • Palermo, Monreale, Segesta and Cefalù
  • Catania, Etna, Taormina and Syracuse
  • Syracuse, Noto, Modica, Rabusa Ibla and Scicli
  • Agrigento, The Valley of the Temples and Villa Romana del Casale

What to do with 3 days in Sicily?

If you have 3 days to visit Sicily, choose a specific area of the island to visit. Here are some ideas:

  • Palermo and Monreale
  • Catania and Etna
  • Syracuse and Noto
  • Modica, Rabusa Ibla and Scicli

What is the nicest part of Sicily to visit?

It depends on what you like. Sicily can offer ancient Greek and Roman archeological sites, Baroque architecture, spectacular nature both inland and by the coast.

“To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.”

Goethe, after visiting the island in 1787

Escorted Tours to Sicily

The essence of sicily.

A cultural kaleidoscope wrapped in dramatic landscapes, Sicily is studded with Baroque towns and Byzantine mosaics, sprinkled with classical ruins and Norman castles, scented with wild herbs and citrus groves, and steeped in legends and drama.

Why choose a tour in Sicily?

Set just off the toe of the boot-shaped Italian mainland, Sicily has been seducing travellers since the 17 th century. With beautiful beaches, archaeological treasures, Aeolian Islands, UNESCO sites, and iconic Mount Etna, tours in Sicily cover everything from cultural heritage to contrasting landscapes.

We circle the island through its ancient past , from Syracuse, the site of Archimedes’ ‘Eureka’ moment; to the Roman mosaics of Villa del Casale, Agrigento’s Greek ‘Valley of Temples’; Phoenician relics on a tiny islet, the rock tombs of Pantalica, and the ruins of Selinunte city, isolated, elevated, and enormous.

There are tours to the UNESCO listed ‘Towns of Val di Noto’, south-eastern Noto, Scicli, Ragusa and Catania; all destroyed in the 1693 earthquake and rebuilt in the florid façades of Baroque splendour.

Breathtaking Byzantine art graces churches and cathedrals with gleaming gilded mosaics, in Palermo, Monreale, and coastal Cefalú, its Middle Ages heart meeting a modern and vibrant shore; while splendid Taormina encapsulates Sicily’s past and present, with a Greek amphitheatre, medieval alleys, and a main street hemmed with chic shops.

Some places which are new to you may seem familiar, as we fuse fact with fiction in film, TV, and literary locations, from the Savoca setting for scenes of ‘The Godfather’, to Punta Secca’s sites for Inspector Montalbano , and the volcanoes of Stromboli, where Jules Verne’s adventurers emerged from their ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’.

To complete the full picture of the island , the various tour routes are punctuated with grand palazzos, picturesque fishing ports, white-washed villages, and wind-whipped cliffs.

When to go on Sicily holidays

With the warmest of Italy’s Mediterranean weather, Sicily enjoys a balmy climate between 20 and 25 degrees in April, May, September and October, a comfortable time for touring, when towns and sights are generally quieter. Temperatures rise in the summer months (June-August) to hover around 30-35°, when the seas around the island are temptingly warm, and resorts are notably busier. Jules Verne tours operate between mid-March and early November.

Who are Sicily tours suited to?

Sicily combines its unique culture with characterful medieval towns, celebrated archaeological sites, spectacular topography, speciality cuisine, and sweet Marsala wine; welcoming the literati, the glitterati, and the curious traveller, and delivering the ideals of every visitor in one way or another. Our small-group tours are enjoyed by singles, couples, and friends alike; and for those who prefer to travel solo, we offer an ‘ exclusively singles ’ tour of the island’s treasures.

Why book Sicily tours with Jules Verne?

With 45 years’ experience and a passion for creating extraordinary adventures, Jules Verne visits famous landmarks and lesser-known sites, with expert tour guides who share their local knowledge, and show you hidden gems. Our journeys in Sicily visit every one of the island’s UNESCO World Heritage sites from the slopes of Mount Etna to Aeolian Islands, ancient cities, Byzantine chapels, grandiose Gothic cathedrals and Taormina, a tourist magnet since the Grand Tour travellers visited, two centuries ago.

All our guided tours to Sicily are ABTA and ATOL protected, and we offer a 100% price guarantee, so you can book with complete confidence.

Find out more about flights

  • In order to enter Italy, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code SFS.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Palermo and depart from Catania.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours.
  • When you arrive in Palermo, a Go Ahead representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a Go Ahead sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a steady-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • One 1-night stay
  • 3 full days of included activities in a row (more if you add excursions)
  • All transportation by motor coach
  • Daily drive time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day—this includes city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Stone and marble walkways may be slippery even when dry.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.

Climate Considerations

  • In the summer months, June-September, travelers can expect high temperatures from 70sF -80sF and lows from 50sF-60sF with occasional extreme heatwaves.

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pacing questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team.
  • Most transportation on this tour is by private motor coach. Private motor coaches have steps required to board and often do not provide access to ramps or lifts.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check baggage or exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must be able to manage their luggage throughout tour; porters aren’t guaranteed at hotels or airports.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, F, or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes 4 dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • The cuisine of Southern Italy is often what diners think of when imagining Italian flavors—pasta with tomato sauces, olives and olive oil, zucchini, veal, and fish are all featured prominently on menus throughout the region.
  • Sicilian cuisine in particular is heavily influenced by Spanish, Greek, and Arab traditions. The Spanish brought New World influences to the region in the form of tomatoes, chocolate, and maize, while the Arab influence can be tasted in recipes that include rice, spinach, saffron, and citrus fruits. Regional specialties include arancini, cannoli, and granita.
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in USD.
  • We recommend tipping $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro on tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you don’t already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your Tour Director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To help you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Italy is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • When you travel with Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • Go Ahead Tours encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.

Sicily Cultural Walking Tour

In more ways than one, Sicily is the ultimate Italy. Geographically, it's the southernmost province— warm, golden, and sprinkled with blindingly white Greek temples that are among the world's best preserved. And culturally it's more like Italy as we'd have imagined it a hundred years ago. Farmers still get to market by donkey. Mt. Etna is active even today and is the backdrop to almost every view. Even the bread is rougher and crustier—better to match vibrant food unlike any other you'll find in Italy. We've scouted a remarkably scenic walking tour that captures the spirit of Sicily. There's Palermo, of course…and the rock-clinging seaside beauty of Taormina. From beautifully sited lodgings, we set out on walks among the temples of Agrigento and immerse ourselves in ancient archeology. Offshore, we wander the jewel-like Aeolian Islands. And we're inclined to agree with the poet who wrote: "To have seen Italy without seeing Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all."

Start on the Amalfi Coast! Join our Amalfi tour the week prior to your Sicily departure for an amazing Italian vacation. Call 800.200.3887 for details.

• Begin with a walk to scenic Mount Pellegrino before exploring Palermo, on foot at eye level

• Walk through charming countryside in the heart of Sicily near Regaleali, where a friend invites us into his kitchen for a special treat — a taste of the renowned local wines and a cooking instruction.

• Luxuriate in your perfectly-sited accommodations among Greek temples that date from 400 BC and are scattered amid lovely hills with wildflowers, herds of sheep and the sea in the distance.

• Sip and stroll your way through an organic winery followed by a gourmet picnic while on the island of Lipari.

• Get the 'only with Classic Journeys' access to a local family's olive grove to learn about the olive oil making process and sample the fine results.

• Explore magnificent views of Taormina as it clings to the cliffs over the Ionian Sea with Mt. Etna's snow-capped cone as a backdrop.

• Head to the slopes of Mt. Etna for a walk in a breathtaking landscape of lava dunes before a memorable picnic of local specialties.

• Boat to the Aeolian Islands for walks through vineyards at an organic winery

• Walk the medieval streets of Taormina and pay a visit to the Greek theater with its panoramic view of the sea.

Sicily art tours: the best way to explore sicily’s cultural heritage.

  • Tea Gudek Šnajdar

Sicily Art Tours

Sicily is one of the most unique and heterogeneous places in Europe. The island is home to fantastic landscapes, beautiful seaside and one of the largest still active European volcanos. With its long history, Sicily’s cultural heritage is one of the most versatile on the Old Continent. From the Ancient Greeks and Romans to Normans and Arabs, they all left their mark on the island.

Sicily’s Cultural Heritage

This is a sponsored blog post by Sicily Art Tours , a small company organising unique tours filled with art and culture on Sicily.

Ever since I started reading about Sicily, I was amazed by the variety of its natural landscapes, architectural styles and cultural influences. Its turbulent past created a cultural mix you can hardly find elsewhere in Europe. Sicily has massive mountains but also a turquoise sea. It’s home to some of the best preserved Ancient Greek temples, masterpieces of Renaissance art and unique Baroque architecture.

It’s quite a large island, the biggest one in the Mediterranean Sea, with a population of 4.8 million inhabitants. Sicily is also home to the highest European active volcano, Etna, which is currently 3,357 metres (a bit more than 11,000 feet) high.

Sicily Art Tours

Sicily Art Tours review

To share their love towards this extraordinary island, two locals, Serena Firera and Eolo Paul Bottaro, started organising Sicily Art Tours.

“What motivated us to start these art tours is a combination of our personal passion for art, travel and connecting with people who appreciate culture. We also have a strong desire to contribute positively to Sicily. We believe that for too long, Sicily has missed out on tourism due to its troubled history. I remember bringing a Finnish friend, who is a photographer, to Sicily a decade ago, whom I met during my study exchange. He told me he would have never considered visiting a place that, in his mind, was associated with the mafia, but that trip ended up being for him a very enriching cultural experience. Through our art tours, we hope to share the best Sicily has to offer and we hope to make a positive impact on Sicily’s image and its society as a whole”, Serena says.

Eolo continues: “Through the years, I have travelled Sicily deeply and extensively nevertheless, this powerful island still surprises me with its endless amount of art, culture, history and beauty.”

Siracusa Baroque architecture

Cultural tourism is all about going local. Learning about local culture, exploring its history, speaking with locals, trying traditional food and experiencing its culture firsthand. Brought up from love and passion towards it, Sicily Art Tours perfectly shares an island’s essence with its visitors.

Serena explains it: “As a Sicilian and a psychologist, I aim to provide our tourists with a deeper insight into Sicilian society as a whole. Sicily is a complex place, brimming with contradictions and captivating stories that have served as inspiration for great authors and artists, both in the past and present. I would love to share with our tourists a psychological prospect on Sicily as well, to help them understand not only the history and art but also the psychology and social dynamics of the region.”

Sicily Art Tours Catania

Catania is the second largest city on Sicily, located between the Etna Mountain and the Ionian Sea. Founded as a Greek colony in the 8th century BC, it’s filled with many sites from the Antiquity. One of the best preserved is the Roman amphitheatre from 300 BC. The city was also one of the cultural centres of Renaissance Italy.

Catania is home to some fantastic examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture, especially because of its usage of the black lava stone from Etna. The Old Town of Catania is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the unmissable sites in Catania is Teatro Massimo Bellini, which opened in 1890. Known for its excellent acoustics, it hosts various musical performances throughout the year.

The city suffered throughout history from the Etna Volcano outbursts. However, they also created fertile soil in the city’s vicinity, which is especially good for vine production.

Messina & Taormina

Antiquity theatre at Taormina on Sicily

With its long history, Messina is filled with fascinating architecture. Because of its trading routes, it was one of the first points of entry of the Black Death to Europe in the mid-14th century. The Regional Museum of Messina is the largest one in southern Italy. It exhibits the artworks explaining Messina’s cultural history from the 12th to 18th century. Some of its highlights are Caravaggio’s The Adoration of the Shepherds and Resurrection of Lazarus and artworks by Antonello de Messina, Domenico Gagini and others.

The nearby town of Taormina is home to one of the best-preserved Greek monuments, the Greek Theatre of Taormina. Built in the 3rd century BC, it was mainly constructed of bricks and is still used for various musical and theatrical performances.

Syracuse on Sicily

Syracuse was one of the most important cities during the Ancient Greek time. In the 5th century BC, it was equal in size to Athens. Cicero described it as “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”. Ortigia, a small island off the city’s coast, is Syracuse’s historic heart. You’ll find architecture from Ancient Greece and Rome to Norman and Baroque times there.

The Syracuse Cathedral is dedicated to the city’s patron, Saint Lucy. It’s also home to the well-known painting by Caravaggio, The Burial of Saint Lucy. Located in a 12th-century palace, the Bellomo Palace Regional Gallery shouldn’t be missed in Syracuse. The highlight of its collection is Antonello de Messina’s Annunciation.

Modica, Ibla, Ragusa & Scicli

Ragusa Sicily Art Tours

The massive 1693 earthquake demolished the towns in south-east Sicily. They were rebuilt in the following years, erecting many buildings in a new Sicilian Baroque style. Because of their fantastic architecture, all four towns are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Sicilian Baroque style is present mainly on more representational buildings. It’s primarily visible in the sacral architecture of churches but also in private palaces built by the local aristocracy. It’s characterised by dramatical, theatrical features, making viewers feel as if they are on a stage of a theatre.

⤷ Serena’s TIP : Although it’s challenging to pick the favourite region of Sicily, I must confess a special affection for the Baroque towns of Modica, Scicli and Ragusa, as well as the enchanting Madonie Mountains. These regions feel like islands within the island, they are less touristy areas exuding tranquillity and unparalleled beauty.

Vila Romana & the Valley of the Temples

Valley of the Temples on Sicily

Vila Romana del Casale was built in the early 4th century AD. It’s home to one of the world’s richest and best-preserved collections of Roman mosaics, which got it to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Another site from the Antiquity that shouldn’t be missed on Sicily is the Valley of the Temples. It consists of seven Doric temples, some of the best Greek architecture and art examples worldwide.

⤷ Serena’s TIP : Walking through the valley on a warm summer night, especially with a full moon casting its glow, is an experience that sends shivers down my spine. It creates a profound connection not only to the ancient history of this land but to the heritage of our entire culture.

Polizzi Generosa

Madonie Mountains Sicily

Madonie Mountains are known as the Alps of Sicily, reaching almost 2,000 metres (6562 feet) of height. Polizzi Generosa is a charming village set 917 m above sea level inside the Madonie Natural Park. The village has beautiful art treasures, like the triptych attributed to Rogier van der Weyden at Chiesa Madre.

The town is also interesting because of its long terracotta pottery-making history. However, that skill doesn’t belong to the history books on this island. Sicily Art Tours will take you to the local artist’s Giovanni D’Angelo studio, a third-generation terracotta pottery maker. That contact with locals, artists and craftsmen living and working on Sicily sets up these tours from others.

Polizzi Generosa at Sicily

Serena describes that well: “In addition to exploring art, archaeology, and architecture, our journey will immerse us in Sicilian culture from every angle. We will savour the rich and diverse Sicilian cuisine, influenced by the various dominations that have left their mark on the island. Our meals will be enjoyed at traditional farms, trattorias and fishing villages, where everything is sourced locally. Local expert guides will share the captivating stories behind the places we visit. Furthermore, we’ll have the opportunity to connect with local artists and artisans, allowing us to delve deeper into the beautiful traditions and crafts of Sicily.”

Cefalù & Monreale

Cefalu on Sicily

Cefalù is a picturesque coastal town in the northern part of Sicily. One of its most fascinating buildings is the Cefalù Cathedral, built in the 12th century. It bears the Norman architectural and Sicilian Romanesque stylistic characteristics. The cathedral is well known for its twin towers and Byzantine mosaics in its interior.

Another cultural spot that should be noticed there is the Mandralisca Museum. It’s a privately owned museum hosting the collection by archaeologist Baron Mandralisca (1809-1864). Its collection’s highlight is Antonello de Messina’s Portrait of an Unknown Man from 1465, considered one of the most distinctive portraits of Renaissance Italian art.

Monreale Cathedral Sicily

The nearby town of Monreale is home to another beautiful medieval cathedral. The Monreale Cathedral is a fantastic example of Arab-Norman architecture. With its beautiful mosaic interior decoration, it found its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015.

Palermo cathedral

More than 2,700 years old, Palermo is the largest town on Sicily and its cultural capital. It was founded by Phoenicians in 734 BC and later ruled by Carthage, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish and French. All these rulers left a mark on its architecture, making the city a unique cultural melting point. Home to numerous fantastic cultural sites, some of the most famous are the Palermo Cathedral, the Oratorio di San Lorenzo, the Cappuccini Catacombs with around 1252 mummies, and many more.

One of the best museums in Palermo is Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, located in Palazzo Abatellis and home to Antonello de Messina’s Virgin Annunciate.

⤷ Serena’s TIP : Identifying a habit that unites all Sicilians can be challenging due to the island’s remarkable diversity. However, one common practice, especially during the summer, is enjoying granita and brioche for breakfast. Granita, akin to ice cream, is typically crafted from local ingredients, offering a wonderfully refreshing and delicious start to the day.

Sicily Art Tours leaders

Eolo & Serena from Sicily Art Tours

Sicily Art Tours was founded and led by Serena Firera and Eolo Paul Bottaro. They collaborate with local experts and guides in each location visited during the Sicily Art Tours, providing their visitors the best possible and truly local experience.

Born in Sicily, Serena has lived on it most of her life. She holds a degree in psychology. But, after travelling the world and living in Australia for some time, Serena rediscovered her passion towards travel, art and different cultures. After returning to Sicily, she designed the Sicily Art Tours to share her love towards her birthplace with the rest of the world. Serena brings insight into Sicily’s local life, lifestyle and society, helping you understand its culture better.

Eolo Paul Bottaro: Golden Blanket - Sicilian landscape

Eolo is an Australian artist of Italian-Sicilian descent. Although born in Australia, he repeatedly visited Sicily after finally settling on the island. His art is influenced by the Italian Renaissance masters and often inspired by Sicily itself. With his technical art knowledge of the canvas preparations, pigments Renaissance and Baroque Masters used and other tricks of the trade, you’ll get a unique insight into these artworks.

Eolo plays a central role in Sicily Art Tours, leading groups through the island and offering unparalleled insights into the art, culture, and heritage of Sicily. His artistic background, combined with his deep roots in Sicilian culture, enriches the tour experience in ways that are truly unique.

  • After a pleasant and fresh awakening in the village of Erice, we will move for an exciting naturalistic trekking experience within the Zingaro Reserve . A coastal path, about 7 km (4.3 miles), which can be easily traveled in no more than two hours*, dotted with broom, thyme, almond trees, ash trees, dwarf palms and carob trees, to fully enjoy the typical Mediterranean landscape overlooking the marine cove

  • After breakfast we’ll drive to the fascinating Mazara del Vallo , which contains the most typical features of Mediterranean culture : located less than 200 km (124 miles) from the Tunisian coast, only the sea separates it from Africa, but in every corner you can breathe the multi-ethnic atmosphere of the city
  • The labyrinthine Arab-North African layout of the historic center enchants with its maze of alleys and inner courtyards of the buildings, in which to get lost pleasantly. The so-called Kasbah recalls the Islamic medinas, so much so that it is believed to be on the other side of the Mediterranean
  • Our Sicilian-Tunisian guide will introduce us to the historical-artistic past but also the multicultural current affairs of Mazara : a middle ground between the African and European coasts, a starting point and landing place for the citizens of the Mediterranean
  • After a traditional lunch based on couscous to continue our multicultural day, we’ll enjoy a few free time to “get lost” around the beautiful alleys of Mazara
  • Next, we’ll move to admire the landscape of the Saline : the choreographic salt shallow salt pools and windmills , the soft shades of white and pink that paint the reflections of the sea testify the repetition of an ancient extraction technique tested in this area for the first time by the Phoenicians
  • We will enjoy this natural spectacle with a farewell aperitif at sunset in Marsala
  • After breakfast departure (normally at 09:00 am) for Palermo airport (around 70 minutes driving from your hotel, so make sure to get a late morning or afternoon flight) or your next destination in Sicily if you want to explore more fascinating places of this Island or other Italian regions (don’t hesitate to let us know and we’ll be happy to support you to continue your Sicilian and Italian trip)

Out route in Sicily

Full Itinerary

Arrival and onward to siracusa (syracuse).

The Treasures of Sicily tour starts with a rendezvous at Catania airport in the afternoon and transfer by minibus on a short drive (1 hour) to our hotel on the island of Ortigia in Siracusa . After a welcome aperitif, we eat a fine sea-food dinner in one of our favourite Siracusan trattorie – which we think is an excellent way to start one of our Sicily tours!

Over dinner, we discuss the importance of the Siracusa in the ancient world. It was one of the earliest Ancient Greek colonies of the Magna Graecia (the diaspora of Greek cities founded as trading outposts of their parent cities) but in the 5th century BC, it grew to be the most powerful city in the whole of Mediterranean.

Overnight in Ortigia, Siracusa.

Guided tour of Ortigia & the Neapolis archaeological park, Siracusa

We start the day with a visit one of the largest and best preserved of all Greek theatres in the whole of the Hellenic world and a remarkable cavern known as L’Orecchio di Dionisio – which, according to a legend started by Caravaggio no less, was used as a prison by the tyrant Dionysius and allowed him to eavesdrop on his captives.

In the late morning, we return to Ortigia where we visit the vibrant food market before enjoying our lunch.

In the afternoon, we strolling through the streets of Ortigia – rubbing shoulders with Greek Mythology, contemplating temples and admiring stunning Baroque and Renaissance architecture and marvelling at Sicily’s most beautiful piazza. Then we visit the cathedral, once the temple of Athena, and thus arguably the oldest building in the world in use for Christian worship.

There is free time in the late afternoon – perhaps for visiting the city art gallery, the Castello Maniace or maybe just shopping or enjoying an ice-cream in spectacular Piazza Duomo.

Evening meal. Overnight in Ortigia, Siracusa.

The Sicilian Baroque: Noto, Modica and Ragusa Ibla.

We make an early start, driving through a landscape of rolling meadows and drystone walls that will be familiar to fans of Inspector Montalbano .

Much of the Eastern part of Sicily was completely destroyed in an earthquake in 1693 and the towns and churches were subsequently rebuilt in a flamboyant style characteristic of Sicilian Baroque. Our first stop of the day, Noto , was even rebuilt as a completely new city 15km from its original site and has a homogeneity and regularity of street-pan unrivalled in Sicilian architecture.

Our journey then takes us to Modica for lunch, and there is time afterwards to enjoy the spectacular view of the city, dominated by the magnificent church of San Giorgio.

We then continue our journey westwards to Ragusa Ibla . Ragusa was also rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, but in this case, it is the old part of the town that we visit. We take a stroll through the winding streets of Ragusa Ibla before continuing our journey to our overnight accommodation.

Evening meal and overnight in a winery near Piazza Armerina.

Taormina

Roman Mosaics at the Villa del Casale, Piazza Armerina and The Valley of the Temples, Agrigento: some of the finest Doric Greek temples surviving

We make an early start from the winery and drive to the Roman Villa del Casale at Piazza Armerina (1 hour) – a hunting lodge from Roman times endowed with the some of the most incredible Roman mosaics anywhere, quite breathtaking in their scope and in the imagery they portray.

After lunch nearby, we drive to Agrigento (1.5 hours) for lunch

In the afternoon, we venture among some of the finest Greek temples in the whole of the Mediterranean. We walk the whole stretch of the Valle dei Templi , starting with the beautiful Temple of Hera, moving on to the breathtaking Temple of Concordia – perfectly preserved and beautifully sited with fine views over almond groves and the sea and onwards until we reach the Temple of Zeus – the largest Doric temple ever built.

After our visit with travel onwards to Marsala where we stay the night.

Evening meal and overnight in Marsala.

Modica

The Phoenicians at Mozia and Garibaldi in Marsala

We start the morning in Marsala or Marsa Allāh (God’s harbour) as it was known to the Arabs. Marsala has earned its place in Italian history books as being the site where Garibaldi landed with his Thousand when he began his conquest of Sicily in 1860. Its history is also entwined with the stories of Nelson, and a handful of English wine merchants throughout the 19th century who made the name of Marsala synonymous with the wine we know today.

We drive north to visit a series of atmospheric saltpans. Started by the Phoenicians, the salt industry of Western Sicily became one of the most prolific in the Mediterranean and was crucial to the preservation of the tuna caught off the west coast of Sicily.

In the afternoon we visit the magical island of Mozia . Lying just a few hundred metres off the shore of Sicily and rising at its highest point to just a few metres above sea level, the island of Mozia was once the Carthaginian capital of Sicily – until its destruction by Dionysius in 379 BC.

Cefalù

Erice and Segesta: Elymian Sicily

We start the day with a drive to Erice.

Walking through the maze of cobbled streets that make up the medieval town of Erice , we pause to look into some of the most charming churches in Sicily, before arriving at the Castle – once the site of a statue Venus Ericina and home to an ancient fertility cult. From the ramparts of the castle we enjoy some spectacular views over the west of Sicily – Trapani, the salt pans, Mozia, Marsala.

In the afternoon, we drive to Segesta (1 hour) to visit what is perhaps the most beautifully sited Greek temple in the world. After musing on its origins in this Elymian city, we move onward to Palermo.

Evening meal and overnight in the historic centre of Palermo.

cultural tours of sicily

Walking tour of Palermo

Today we enjoy the marvels of Sicily’s largest and most important city: Palermo . Until the end of the nineteenth century, the city was surprisingly small and compact, which makes it perfect for exploring on foot.

Palermo is everything you would imagine it to be – chaotic, noisy, exotic, colourful. But the rewards of taking time to explore this incredible city are enormous. Indeed, we would go as far as saying that no visit to Sicily is complete without it. Founded by the Carthaginians, its history is as old as the island – but most of what we are in Palermo to see, dates from the Norman period and later.

We begin with a visit to the Ballarò market where we enjoy a raucous exposition of colour, smells and stall-holders advertising their wares in the local dialect.

Once we have had our fill of the market, we stroll to the Quattro Canti and the so-called “ Fountain of Shame ” in Piazza Pretoria, before visiting the church of the Martorana : with some of the finest Byzantine/Norman mosaics in all Sicily. As we stroll through the medieval city, our guide tells us about the cosmopolitan nature of the medieval city and explains the important contributions of the Arabs, the Jews and the Greeks to the city’s infrastructure: its water supply, it’s economy, and even its diet.

After lunch there is a chance to visit some of the “Serpotta” churches or perhaps the Teatro Massimo .

Alternatively, you are free to either relax or to stroll the streets of Palermo – perhaps visiting the Botanic gardens or the Piazza Marina.

This evening you are free to dine as you wish. Overnight in the historic centre of Palermo.

The Normans in Sicily: Monreale Cathedral and the Palatine Chapel

We drive the short distance to the Cathedral of Monreale (30 mins) – one of the greatest extant examples of Norman architecture in the world.

According to legend, in 1174, the Madonna appeared before the young Norman King William II and led him to a spot where his father had buried a considerable treasure. She instructed him to put it to good use and hence William founded this startling religious monument, high above the fertile Conca d’Oro . It was finished in less than ten years and a bustling medieval village soon sprang up around it.

After visiting the cathedral of Monreale, we descend into the city of Palermo .

We visit the Norman Palace and the Palatine Chapel – surely one of the wonders of Norman architecture anywhere in the world – with its incredible juxtaposition of Byzantine mosaics and beautiful arab paintings in the ceiling.

Evening meal in a local restauarant and overnight in the historical centre of Palermo.

Cefalù, Castelbuono and the Madonie Mountains

We leave Palermo and drive (1.5 hours) to the town of Castelbuono , where several scenes of the film Cinema Paradiso were shot. We then drive onward through the beautiful Madonie mountains to one of our favourite lunch spots, before descending to the coast once again to the town of Cefalù where we visit the splendid Norman cathedral and the beautiful medieval town.

After our visit to Cefalù, we travel onward to Milazzo.

We eat in a local restaurant and stay in Milazzo.

Capo Milazzo and Milazzo Castle

Every Italian schoolchild knows the importance of Milazzo in their country’s history. It was the scene of the decisive battle in the Risorgimento which saw Garibaldi’s red-shirts defeat the Bourbons and lead the way to the unification of Italy. Though there little is left of the scene of the battle, the recently-restored castle in Milazzo (one of the largest in Europe) is one of the lesser-known wonders of Sicily. We spend a pleasant couple of hours in the early morning visiting this castle.

After a light lunch, we drive to Taormina (1 hour) which is justifiably famous as one of the most splendid locations in Sicily. After settling in to the hotel there will be an opportunity to visit the splendid Greek theatre. In the later afternoon you have free time to stroll through the corso of Taormina and enjoy the rest of the afternoon as you wish.

Free evening and overnight in Taormina.

Temple of Concordia, Agrigento

Mt. Etna ~ the largest Volcano in Europe

For those who wish, in the morning, we explore the slopes of Mount Etna , hearing about the fascinating geology of this, the highest volcano in Europe. There is an opportunity to take the cable car and jeeps to within 300m of the summit (ticket not included in the tour price).

We return in the early afternoon to Taormina when there will be free time to enjoy the town or the swimming pool at the hotel.

Farewell dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight in Taormina.

We end our Sicily tour travelling back to Catania airport (1 hour) from whence we say our goodbyes and depart.

For those whose travel is not until the evening, it is possible to enjoy a free day in Taormina – perhaps relaxing by the pooling or strolling the corso until it is time to drive to the airport.

Please note: this is the standard itinerary, but individual tour programmes may differ slightly to take account of local festivals, closing times and availability.

The Ultimate 7-day Sicily Itinerary: A Journey Through History & Beauty

Are you dreaming of a beautiful and cultural escape? Look no further than Sicily. This stunning Italian island is a treasure trove of historical landmarks, delicious cuisine, and natural beauty. Thus, making it the perfect destination for a sunny getaway. From exploring the ancient city of Palermo to relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Cefalù and Syracuse, this 7-day Sicily itinerary offers a comprehensive guide to experiencing the best of the island. So come along on this ultimate journey through history and beauty. And discover why Sicily should be at the top of your travel list.

Blue and yellow umbrellas and sun chairs at the beautiful Mazzaro Bay beach in Taormina - a must stop on this 7-day Sicily Itinerary.

What to Know Before You Go to Sicily

Italian, of course! And be warned, not a lot of the locals spoke English, so I really recommend downloading Google Translator.

Tip: Pre-download the Italian language in the Google Translator App. This allows you can use it even when you are offline or without data. Also, use the camera feature on menus or with any signage. It works like magic!

Euros, like the rest of Italy and Europe!

Electricity

Requires European Plugs. So if you don’t already have a  universal adaptor plug that works worldwide , I recommend bringing this on all your travels. We have  this one  and love it! Not only does it work with my computer and hair curler, it has the additional four USB plugs at the top, to charge all your phone and any other gadgets!

Water in Sicily is safe to drink. However, if you like purified water, bring  this self-cleaning UV water bottle  with you!

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is between April to October, when the temperature is mild and rainfall is low. However, I will warn you that we visited in July, and it was scorching hot. So if you don’t do well in the heat, avoid visiting in July and August.

In my experience, I would give Sicily a 7.5/10. I personally never felt unsafe during the day or night, nor did we have any issues. However, I would be cautious and not walk alone at night, especially in Palermo. Also, unfortunately, Italy is known for pick-pocketing, tourist scams, and the Mafia, so once again be smart and aware.

Transportation

We rented a car for the course of our trip to get from town to town. Overall, driving was fairly stress free, Google maps helped up find directions, and we had no issues with rentals.

A girl wearing a white dress sits at a European cafe during the day, admiring the beautiful town of Oritgia - a hidden gem on this 7-day Sicily Itinerary

A Quick Overview of Your 7-Day Sicily Itinerary

Here is a quick snapshot of the ultimate 7 days in Sicily Itinerary we used for our trip. However, in the following section I go into much more details of what to do in each town.

Day 1 – Exploring the Ancient City of Palermo

Day 2 – relaxing on the beautiful beaches of cefalù, day 3 – enjoying the stunning scenery of taormina, day 4 – uncover the fascinating history of mount etna, day 5 – discovering the charm of ortigia, day 6 – relaxing on the beautiful beaches of syracuse & indulging in the mouth-watering cuisine, day 7 – exploring the fascinating architecture of noto.

Also, with the a user-friendly table of contents at the top, you can conveniently jump to the specific days or topics you want to read about. Hopefully, this will help you easily navigate this blog post. And be sure to save this post to read when you have more time.

Accommodation for your 7-Day Sicily Itinerary

Here is a quick breakdown of where we stayed when we went to Sicily. For some background, we were travelling as a couple, without kids, and were looking for comfortable accommodations, that were both romantic and well located to the main sites. We lucked out and really enjoyed everywhere we stayed, so all of these are accommodations I would recommend and would go back to.

Where to Stay in Palermo

Staying at La Terrazza sul Centro was an absolute delight. The location was right in the historic center and close to the main attractions. Plus, it was just a short stroll to the oldest church in the city and the Ballaro Market. The breakfast was delicious with many choices served on the nice terrace with a beautiful view of the city. The room was very clean, spacious, and had hot water. The staff and owners were very friendly, accommodating, and thoughtful. Overall, an excellent choice for exploring Palermo! You’ll love it.

cultural tours of sicily

Where to Stay in Cefalù

Ossuna Bay Hotel Boutique in Cefalu was a perfect choice for our stay. Its central location made it easy to explore Cefalu, just a short walk to the beach, restaurants, and the Duomo. The breakfast was fantastic, and although the room wasn’t large, it was comfortable. Parking was provided, which was convenient as we had a car rental, and there wasn’t a lot of parking in town. The staff was exceptionally nice and helpful, and the rooms were clean, beautiful, and spacious. The ocean views were such a treat, and the cold A/C was a welcome relief after a day in the sun.

Where to Stay in Taormina

In Taormina, Hotel Continental exceeded our expectations. Its excellent location made it easy to explore the main street and sites, including the fabulous Greek Theater, boutiques, and restaurants, all which were within walking distance. The room was large, comfortable, and impeccably clean. The rooftop terrace was breathtaking, offering exceptional views of Mount Etna. The staff was friendly, and the shuttle service to the beach was a great added bonus that didn’t go unnoticed.

Or if you are a fan of the HBO hit show, White Lotus , splurge out and stay at the iconic San Domenico Palace, Four Season Hotel . This property screams luxury, boasts breathtaking views overlooking Mount Etna and the Bay of Taormina , and includes breakfast during your stay. The price per night is totally crazy, but I’ll put this on my places to stay when I win the lottery list.

Where to Stay in Ortigia

One of our favorite stays in Sicily, was at Palazzo Spagna (One-Bedroom House) in Ortigia . Nestled above a cozy pizzeria, the apartment boasted a convenient kitchenette and was mere steps from the ocean. Its clean, minimalist design exuded comfort, reminiscent of a Nancy Meyers movie set (think of The Holiday , or It’s Complicated ). We particularly enjoyed using the vintage CD player and listening to eclectic CD collection every morning while making breakfast. However, what truly won us over was its proximity to outstanding restaurants and the beach, allowing us to indulge in multiple swims daily.

If booking, note the host offers three distinct options; opt for the spacious 70 m² One-Bedroom House with a large double bed in the bedroom, and a sofa bed in the living room, in order to stay in the same apartment we stayed in. This apartment is listed second and is the middle price among the three room types available . Below is a photo to help you match the apartment to the listing.

cultural tours of sicily

Where to Stay in Noto

Staying at B&B Novecento Siciliano was a perfect for our 1-night stay. The tastefully refurbished old house, steps away from Noto’s main streets, had a charming retro decor that blends old with new. The hosts were super friendly and provided excellent advice on parking, dining, and sightseeing. Also, the included breakfast was superb, and we were very impressed with their coffee. But mostly, the central location made exploring Noto easy, and the friendly host and nice room made it great value for our stay.

7-Day Sicily Itinerary

After a long flight and settling into your accommodations, it’s time to start your Sicilian adventure! Day 1 of your 7-day Sicily Itinerary will be spent exploring the ancient city of Palermo. This bustling city has a fascinating history and is home to many cultural landmarks.

Take in Palermo’s Major Sights

Start your day by visiting the stunning Palermo Cathedral. This impressive structure dates back to the 12th century and boasts stunning Gothic architecture. Take a moment to appreciate the intricate details and frescoes that adorn the cathedral’s interior.

Next up, head to the Quattro Canti, or Four Corners, of Palermo. This intersection features four baroque buildings that are decorated with stunning fountains and statues. Take a stroll around the area and soak in the vibrancy and energy of the city.

Ballarò Market

For lunch, head to the famous Ballarò market. Here, you’ll find a variety of delicious Sicilian street food and fresh produce. Grab a few snacks and sit in the nearby Piazza Pretoria. Here you can people-watch and take in the bustling atmosphere.

After lunch, visit the Palazzo dei Normanni. This impressive palace was built in the 9th century and was home to numerous Sicilian rulers over the centuries. Don’t miss the stunning Palatine Chapel, which features intricate mosaics and ornate decorations.

End your day with a visit to the Teatro Massimo, one of the largest opera houses in Europe. Take a guided tour of the theatre and learn about its impressive history and importance to the city’s cultural scene.

Alternative Tip: Join a Tour

Or, if you like to meet other travellers, join this tour led by a knowledgeable guide who will take you to see the notable landmarks mentioned above, like the Palermo Cathedral, the Teatro Massimo, the Quattro Canti, and the Fontana Pretoria. You’ll also explore markets and try traditional street food while learning about the city’s history, legends, and myths.

Dine at: Seven Restaurant

After a busy day of exploring, it’s time to relax and recharge at the Seven Restaurant rooftop patio for dinner. Indulge with handcrafted cocktails, Sicilian wine, and local delicacies while you soak up the best views of the city. I highly recommend making a reservation and going right before sunset to see the city transform from day to night.

The next section covers Day 2 and gives you the perfect opportunity to unwind on the beautiful beaches of Cefalù.

Swim in the Mediterranean Sea

After a day of exploring Palermo’s vibrant streets, it’s time to unwind on the picturesque beaches of Cefalù. Located just an hour away, this charming coastal town offers crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft golden sand, perfect for a day of sunbathing and swimming. You can choose from a range of beaches, including the popular and lively Lungomare Beach or the quieter and more secluded Caldura Beach.

People and colourful umbrellas scattered along the Cefalu beach in -- an amazing stop on this 7-day Sicily Itinerary

Cefalù itself is a charming town with a rich history and beautiful architecture. You can also wander through the town’s winding streets, stopping by the local shops and cafes, or simply take a stroll along the picturesque harbour. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at water sports like windsurfing or paddle boarding.

After, savour a leisurely Italian-style lunch at one of the beachside restaurants. Taste delicious local seafood dishes, try arancini di riso and sip on refreshing Sicilian wine.

Hike up La Rocca

As the sun starts to set, head up to La Rocca, the rocky hill that overlooks the town. The climb is not for the faint-hearted, but the rewarding views at the top are definitely worth it. Take in the stunning panoramic views of Cefalù and the Tyrrhenian Sea, and watch as the sun sets over the horizon.

After a day of relaxation and exploration, get ready for Day 3 as we head to the stunning scenery of Taormina.

A girl with a blue dress on looks back towards the beach, La Rocca mountain and the seaside town of Cefalù in Sicily

On Day 3 of your Sicilian escape, get ready to be blown away by the stunning scenery of Taormina. This charming town is perched high on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. And it’s easy to see why it’s a favourite among visitors to the island. You may know or recognize it from the second season of the hit TV show White Lotus.

Visit to the Ancient Greek Theatre

Start your day with a visit to the ancient Greek theatre. Be sure to buy your tickets in advance so you can skip the line , and make the most of your day. This theatre dates back to the 3rd century BC and offers breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding countryside. So don’t forget your camera !

Wander Taormina and Take the Cable Car to the Beach

From there, take a stroll along Corso Umberto. This is the main shopping street, where you’ll find a mix of local boutiques, souvenir shops, and high-end fashion brands. Stop at one of the many traditional trattorias for lunch to taste local specialties, such as arancini, pasta alla norma, and cannoli. After lunch, head to the Giardini della Villa Comunale, a beautiful public garden that offers panoramic views of the sea and the town’s rooftops.

In the afternoon, take a cable car down to Isola Bella, a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. The island is a nature reserve and offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily. Spend time swimming and sunbathing, or take a boat tour to explore the nearby grottos and caves. There are also a number of restaurants near the beach, if you prefer to dine near these stunning shores.

Looking down at the Mediterranean Sea views from the top of the cliff top town of Taormina in Sicily.

As the sun sets, head back to Taormina to enjoy an aperitivo in one of the many bars overlooking the sea. Taormina is famous for its nightlife, so be sure to explore the town’s bars and clubs before calling it a night.

Tomorrow, get ready to uncover the fascinating history of Mount Etna, the symbol of Sicily’s volcanic heritage.

On the fourth day of this 7-day Sicily itinerary, it’s time to dive into the fascinating history of Mount Etna. As one of the world’s most active and iconic volcanoes, Mount Etna is more than just a natural wonder – it’s an essential part of Sicily’s cultural heritage. Mount Etna volcano is a must for anyone interested in geology and history.

Tip: To avoid moving to another town, and checking into another hotel, we opted to stay in Taormina another night. Instead, partake in a half day tour that includes round trip transfers from Taormina. After the tour, head back and relax at one of the many beautiful beaches.

Visit the Most Iconic Volcanoes in Europe – Mount Etna

Your journey to Mount Etna will take you through some of Sicily’s most charming and picturesque landscapes, from winding country roads to quaint villages and vineyards. Upon arrival, you’ll be struck by the dramatic landscape marked by black lava fields and ash-covered slopes. Your tour guides will educate you on the fascinating history of the Etna region, the geological processes that led to the formation of the volcano, and its role in shaping the culture, history, and economy of Sicily. Having knowledgeable tour guides and return transfers is one of the many benefits of jumping on this tour !

Mount Etna lets out a puff of smoke on a clear blue bird day, with the small town of Catania at it's feet - a must do on this 7-day Sicily Itinerary

Upon reaching the foothills of the volcano, take the chance to discover its exceptional ecosystem and discover the geological and historical significance it holds. Afterwards, embark on a roughly 1.5-hour hike around the outskirts of the extinct craters. From this vantage point, you’ll be able to marvel at the awe-inspiring vistas of the island, coastline, and horizon.

After a fulfilling morning of exploration, your tour guides will bring you to a nearby café for delectable sandwiches, wine, and desserts, and top it off with a tasting of almond wine. All included in your tour !

As the day draws to a close, you’ll get dropped off back in Taormina for a relaxing afternoon at the beach and an aperitivo overlooking the sea. Tomorrow, you’ll set off to discover the charming coastal town of Ortigia, where history, art, and culture come together in one enchanting package.

Ortigia, located on the southeastern coast of Sicily, is a small island that oozes charm and beauty. And it quickly became our favourite stop in Sicily. Known as the “heart” of Syracuse, this small island boasts stunning architecture, a bustling market, and some of the best seafood in all of Italy. In other words, exploring this hidden gem is a must-do on this 7-day Sicily itinerary.

We start our day with a leisurely stroll through the winding streets that lead to quaint local shops and cozy cafes. The town is known for its historic architecture, including the stunning Baroque Cathedral of Syracuse, complete with intricate carvings and an ornate fountain.

Eat at the Market & Find the Sandwich Stall

Our next destination is one of my favourite spots – the open-air market. Local vendors sell a vibrant range of fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices that are a feast for the senses. While you’re there, make sure to look out for the charming old man who runs a sandwich stall. He offers an incredible assortment of cheeses and meats, and as he makes your sandwich, he’ll also slice off small samples of various ingredients for you to taste. Although he didn’t speak any English, food became our common language during our interaction. Even today, my husband and I fondly reminisce about this unique market experience – as it was undoubtedly the best sandwich we’ve ever had!

Explore Ortigia by Foot & on a Boat

Afterward, take a leisurely walk along the coast and explore the picturesque neighbourhoods, each with unique character and charm. Then, stop for a coffee or a refreshing gelato and take in the lively energy of this vibrant community. If the weather is hot, like it was for us, take a dip at any of the surrounding rocky beaches.

Undoubtedly, one of the most memorable moments of our trip to Ortigia was this boat tour around the island . It provided a unique and unparalleled view of the island from the sea. Plus, we had the opportunity to swim in the crystal clear Mediterranean waters and explore nearby sea caves, creating an unforgettable experience that we will never forget.

One of the best stops on this 7-day Sicily Itinerary is Ortigia, a colourful seaside town with some of the best seafood on the island.

Sunset Drinks & Late Dinner

As the sun sets, head to one of the seaside bars and sip on a spritz as you take in the beauty and relaxing vibe of Ortigia. After, head home to freshen up for dinner. You may have realized by now that Sicilians tend to eat late, due to the heat. Tonight, head to a local seafood restaurants for a sumptuous meal featuring the best of the region’s catch. Freshly caught fish, octopus, and squid are delicacies that await you.

Must-try: Tonight, dine at Ristorante Cortile Di Bacco . This hidden patio restaurant treated us to one of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life. The food was delicious, service was impeccable, and ambiance was authentic and romantic.

Tomorrow, it’s off to the gorgeous beaches of Syracuse for a day of relaxation and indulgence in Sicily’s mouth-watering cuisine.

As the sun rises on day six of our 7-day Sicily itinerary, we are greeted with perfect weather and clear blue skies. Today, we will spend the day relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Syracuse, surrounded by stunning views of the Mediterranean sea. After a week filled with adventure and exploration, it’s time to unwind and enjoy the blissful serenity of this idyllic location.

The beaches in Syracuse are some of the most beautiful in Sicily, with crystal clear waters and pristine sand that make for a picture-perfect scene. We’ll spend the day lounging on the beach, soaking up the warm sun, and taking refreshing dips in the refreshing water. It’s the perfect way to recharge our batteries after an action-packed week.

A beautiful Spiaggia di Vendicari beach in Riserva naturale orientata Oasi Faunistica di Vendicari

But no trip to Syracuse is complete without indulging in the mouth-watering cuisine that this region is famous for. So we’ll take a break from the sun and sand to explore the local restaurants and cafes, sampling the fresh seafood and local wines that are a staple of Sicilian cuisine. From traditional dishes like pasta alla Norma to sweet treats like cannoli, we’ll savour every bite and enjoy the unique flavours of this region.

As we begin to wind down on day six, we can’t help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. With one day left in our journey, we’re excited to explore the fascinating architecture of Noto. Here we will discover even more of Sicily’s rich history and culture.

On the final day of your Sicilian adventure, make your way to the charming town of Noto. Noto is a small town located in the province of Syracuse and is known for its baroque architecture. The town was destroyed in the 1693 earthquake, and the reconstruction that followed was nothing short of extraordinary.

Visit the Noto Cathedral

Marvel at the intricate façades of the palaces and churches, adorned with decorative sculptures and elaborate balconies. One of the must-see buildings is the stunning Noto Cathedral, a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque style. In the heart of Noto is the Corso Vittorio Emanuele. This is a street that is teeming with charming cafes, restaurants, and shops.

While you’re here, take a break from the sightseeing and indulge in some local delicacies. Noto is famous for its almond-based pastries, such as the delicious biancomangiare, a creamy dessert served with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

As the sun sets on your final day, take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey you’ve had. From the vibrant markets of Palermo to the idyllic beaches of Syracuse and the architectural wonders of Noto.

Our trip to Noto has been the perfect way to wrap up our 7-day Sicily itinerary. We have been immersed in the culture, history, and beauty of this unique region. As we say goodbye to Sicily, we know that we will carry its essence with us forever.
