Your dinner cruise in Sydney begins with a welcome from your crew as you board your luxury cruiser and depart for the ultimate experience on Sydney Harbour. Appetizers, soft drinks, sparkling wine, beer, still wine, tea and coffee will be available from the moment you step on board.

As we cruise past the world-famous landmarks including the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House your crew will be on hand to tell you about the past and modern-day history of the harbour. You will see Woolloomoolloo Bay, the home of the Australian Navy’s Sydney Base Garden Island, then venture further down the harbour cruising past Double Bay and Point Piper which are the locations of the most expensive homes in Sydney.

We will go past Clarke and Shark Island, the two national parks in the middle of the harbour, with Rose Bay on your right. Shortly after, you will arrive at the shores of Balmoral where your dining experience will begin.

Disembark the boat and stroll down the wharf to the harbour beachfront restaurant. Enjoy your choice of entrees and mains from the menu accompanied by a selection of beverages.

After you have finished dining, the time will come to head back to the boat and return to the main harbour to enjoy Sydney by night. You will cruise into the harbour, where the city lights will be ablaze.

Whilst onboard you will be able to enjoy a beautiful cheese platter.

an ever-changing landscape

Your experience begins by cruising under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and past the Sydney Opera House – two of Australia’s most iconic attractions. Heading east, pass by the Royal Australian Navy Base located on Garden Island, towards Watson’s Bay. On the return journey, via the north side of the harbour, pass by Clifton Gardens, Bradleys Head, Taronga Zoo, Kirribilli House (home of the Prime Minister) and Luna Park before returning to Darling Harbour.

We are going to stay in Trosmo next year around start of March for our Norway/Finland trip and I am wondering if this following itinerary sounds good?

2:30pm - Check in hotel @ Trosmo city centre

7pm - Dinner

Reindeer Ranch and Sami 4 hours bus Tour (10am or 1pm option, unsure which to take)

To conclude/return back to Trosmo either 2pm or 5pm

Northern light dinner cruise from 7pm to 11pm

11am - Tromsø: Arctic Fjord landscape Cruise (3 ½ hours)

2:30pm - conclude, then lunch

4pm - Fjellheisen sunset cable car till dark + enjoy glittering night view landscape (if 1st day is bad weather)

7pm - Northern light dinner cruise from 7pm to 11pm (if previous day is cloudy)

Day 4: Check out early morning and head to Rovaniemi

We are a scenery type of person

I think this is very perfect unless we might have missed something else or that is recommended to do?

It can very well be cloudy for your entire stay, it could be snowing heavily which would ruin any visibility.

If you are serious about Northern Lights, you should join NL chasing tours. Mobility is the key for finding those all important clear skies.

March is high season, tours sell out.

I did not know March is actually high season.

I was thinking it is low season given the highest snowy season is almost over. I guess its the ski season period eh?

March is popular as hours of daylight are long while nights are still dark enough for viewing Northern Lights, plus possibilities of snow activities.

Good to know March is the peak for snow as my wife will be happy

Looks like I will then book the tours in advance with 24 hours refund flexibility should the weather does not favour us e.g. Viator and Get Your Guide should do the job!

Weather is very changeable and you will hardly know what the weather will be like 24 hrs in advance, even from local weather forecasts, especially when you have no experience of weather in the area. Due to interactions of mountains there are several microclimates within reach. Tours will take you to areas where there are clear skies, after that it is up to the aurora ‘gods’. Staying in Tromsø you will have no clue about the weather inland.

A serious NL tour will take you far away from Tromsø in the hope of finding somewhere with clear skies. It is impossible to know the actual cloud conditions all around Tromsø 24 hours in advance, sometimes the cloud cover forecast is wrong even for the next hours. So if NL are important for you, find a tour that is of the "chase" type (look at reviews to see if the guides are known to do the effort), and take it regardless of weather conditions and forecast. You might be lucky (you might not).

However since you are going to Rovaniemi afterwards (how long?) you can also have chance for NL there, with often more favorable cloud conditions, so you can also be OK to not maximise your chance while in Tromsø so you can enjoy the rest of your stay better. A NL chase can bring you back to Tromsø quite late at night (or early in the morning) so maybe not compatible with many day tours or activities.

Interesting to know that Trosmo is unpredictable even you check the weather forecast on the day or something as they advise like check the KP index and if it is at least 4, solar activity is strong, go on that day etc. In that case, I guess I will leave it to God and just enjoy regardless what happens

Thanks for the tip, I will have a research for 'chase' tour where is good in Trosmo. No wonder I see NL tour somewhere in Finland before and sometimes I see "chase" wording, so it does make a difference.

Kp index is mostly an indication of how large the aurora oval is (ie how far South you will have a chance to see NL). Tromsø is almost always under the aurora oval even with a very low Kp index and you can have nice displays in Tromsø even with a Kp index of 2 for instance.

In Tromsø you have a more dramatic landscape if you want to take pictures, but just for aurora watching Rovaniemi is not bad. It's a little bit more South but still within the Arctic Circle and with good opportunities for NL. On the other hand if you are driving yourself be very mindful of weather and road conditions especially if you plan to drive at night. If you have no winter driving experience I would consider whether it's wise to do your own NL chase.

Be aware that not all NL displays are as colorful or dramatic as you can see on Instagram and even when the display is strong the colors are always brighter through the camera lens than with your naked eyes.

I would like to say thank you advising to take a 'serious NL tour that would take us to long distance'

I always thought it would be a boring 3 hours NL tour

I actually went one in Iceland NL bus tour back in 2018 but it was rather plain, like they got out of the Reykjavik city maybe 40 min, did not see much, then returned back. They had a guarantee that if you do not see it, you can have it scheduled again, but I had to leave the next day, so couldn't do it. I noticed nowadays, they do not have this free guarantee thing anymore as I do not see it. In Iceland, we also did a Snowmobile tour and back then, my wife and I had our own vehicle each to drive. It seems like now, you only get to share , one for drive and other as passenger, I guess that's the standard norm now to save/make more money (for extra individual driver) huh?

Even the tour finishes past midnight or 2am at max., it still perfect for us, because we could choose to do the Sami in 1pm next day or the Arctic Fjord cruise that starts at 12pm, so this will be pretty decent rest, so thank you for the recommendation once again

In regard to for us driving Rovaniemi chasing NL, we won't go too far like the bus tour do as we are not confident anyways, I heard a recommended place in Norvajärvi which is around 15 min from the city centre with little or no light. So is it still advisable to go for NL chase? or still risky esp with no winter driving experience despite only a short drive?

Tromsø (and Norway) is different to Iceland as accessible roads run mostly along the coast, so the main goal in Iceland would be to get away from the light pollution. In Tromsø there are various climates like coastal, fjord and interior.

Most of January is still polar night period with minimal daylight, hence February and March are more popular. Plus these months coincide with European half term holidays.
