Union Railway Minister’s visit: Parties pin hope on Odisha's pending projects

BALANGIR: Ahead of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s visit to Balangir on August 22, leaders of different parties and civil society organisations raised issues like pending railway projects in the district and sought fast-tracking of those. The minister, who is on a four-day visit to Odisha as part of BJP’s ‘Jan Ashirwad Yatra’, is also scheduled to visit Nabarangpur on Saturday and Kalahandi the next day.

Former MP Kalikesh Narayan Singhdeo in a letter to the Union Minister on Friday, put forth a list of demands that include declaration of the Balangir-Khurda rail connectivity as a national project, tagging Balangir station as ‘model’ station, Ispat express train extension till Balangir, railway gates conversion into over bridges/under bridges, stoppage of Puri-Durg express at Muribahal station and Balangir-Bicchhupali passenger train extension upto Bhawanipatna.

He also drew the attention of the minister to seek direct train to Delhi from Sambalpur and Sambalpur to Prayagraj via Balangir and Titilagarh, weekly train from Hatia to Yashwantpur and a railway coach maintenance unit between Deogaon-Balangir railway station near Matkhai.

Similarly, Pramod Mishra, leader of Koshal State Coordination Committee, highlighting the plight of the 289-km Khurda-Balangir railway project which was approved in 1994 at as estimated cost of `230 crore, said the project has been inordinately delayed. The escalated cost is now at over Rs 3,000 crore and only 76 km from Khurda side and 16 km from Balangir to Bicchupali have been completed.

“I urge the Minister to expedite the project and initiate a proposal to connect Balangir and Harishankar Road through Patnagarh,” added Mishra. He also raised the issue of around 750-acre land acquired by the Railways lying unutilised in Kantabanji and proposed construction of a loco shed or wagon factory there.

PM’s address at the launch of several railway projects in Odisha

PM’s address at the launch of several railway projects in Odisha

Jai Jagannath!

Governor of Odisha Shri Ganeshi Lal ji, Chief Minister & my friend Shri Naveen Patnaik ji, my cabinet colleagues Ashwini Vaishnaw ji, Dharmendra Pradhan ji, Bishweswar Tudu ji, all other dignitaries, and all my brothers and sisters from West Bengal and Odisha!

Today the people of Odisha and West Bengal are receiving the gift of Vande Bharat train. The Vande Bharat train is turning into a symbol of a modern India as well as an aspirational Indian. Today, when Vande Bharat travels from one place to another, it reflects both the speed and progress of India.

Now this speed and progress of Vande Bharat is going to knock at the doors of Bengal and Odisha. This will not only change the experience of rail travel but also give a new meaning to development. Now whether someone travels from Kolkata to Puri for darshan, or from Puri to Kolkata for some work, this journey will take only 6.5 hours. This will save time; help expand trade and business and create new opportunities for the youth. I congratulate the people of Odisha and West Bengal for the same.

Whenever someone has to travel far with his family, rail is his first choice and priority. Today, several other major works have been done for the rail development of Odisha, be it laying the foundation stone for modernization of Puri and Cuttack railway stations, doubling of railway lines, or achieving 100% electrification of railway lines in Odisha. I congratulate the people of Odisha for all these projects.

This is the ‘Azaadi Ka Amritkaal’. This is the time to further strengthen India’s unity. The greater the unity, the stronger will be the collective strength of India. These Vande Bharat trains are a reflection of this spirit as well. In this ‘Amritkaal’, Vande Bharat trains are not only becoming the engine of development, but are also taking forward the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’.

Indian Railways connect everyone and weave them in one thread. Vande Bharat trains too will carry this trend forward. This Vande Bharat will further strengthen the spiritual and cultural ties between Howrah and Puri, between Bengal and Odisha. Today, about 15 such Vande Bharat trains are running in different states of the country. These modern trains are also giving a boost to the country’s economy.

Over the years, India has maintained its momentum of growth even during the most difficult global conditions. There is a major reason behind this. And that is, every state participates in this development journey, and the country is moving forward taking every state along with it. There was a time when any new technology or a new facility that would be introduced remained confined to Delhi or some major cities only. But today’s India is moving ahead leaving behind this old thinking.

Today’s new India is not only creating new technologies all by itself but is also rapidly taking the new facilities to every nook and corner of the country. India has built Vande Bharat trains on its own. Today, India is developing 5G technology on its own and is taking it to far-flung areas of the country.

India had also surprised the world by developing an indigenous vaccine for a pandemic like Corona. And the common thing in all these efforts is that all these facilities were not limited to just one city or one state. These facilities reached everyone and reached quickly. Our Vande Bharat trains are also now touching every corner of the country from north to south, and east to west.

Brothers & Sisters,

The maximum benefit of this policy of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ has been reaped by those states of the country who were earlier left behind in the race for development. In the last 8-9 years, there has been a substantial increase in the budget for rail projects in Odisha. In the first 10 years before 2014, on an average only around 20 kilometres of rail lines were laid here every year; while in the year 2022-23 i.e. in just one year, around 120 kilometres of new rail lines have been laid here.

In the 10 years before 2014, doubling of rail lines in Odisha was less than 20 km. Last year this figure has also increased to around 300 kms. People of Odisha are aware of the fact that about 300 km long Khurdha-Bolangir project was pending for several years. Today the work on this project is also going on at a rapid pace. Be it the new ‘Haridaspur-Paradip’ railway line, or doubling and electrification of Titlagarh-Raipur line, all these projects for which the people of Odisha had been waiting for years are now being completed.

Today, Odisha is among those states of the country, where 100 percent electrification of rail network has been done. In West Bengal too, work is going on rapidly for 100 percent electrification. Consequently, the speed of trains has increased and the time taken by the freight trains has also been reduced. A state like Odisha, which is such a huge reservoir of mineral wealth, will benefit even more from the electrification of railways. As a result of this, besides accelerating industrial development there will also be freedom from pollution caused by diesel.

There is another aspect of building infrastructure which is usually not talked about much. Infrastructure not only makes life easier for the people, but it also empowers the society. Where there is lack of infrastructure, the development of the people also lags behind. Where there is development of infrastructure, there is also rapid development of people.

You also are aware that under the PM Saubhagya Yojana, the Government of India has given free electricity connections to more than 2.5 crore households. It also includes about 25 lakh houses in Odisha and 7.25 lakh houses in Bengal. Now just imagine, if this scheme was not implemented, what would have happened? Even today in the 21st century, the children of 2.5 crore households would be forced to study in the dark and live in the dark. Those families would remain cut off from modern connectivity and all the facilities related to electricity.

Today we talk about increasing the number of airports from 75 to around 150. This is a great achievement for India, but the thought behind it makes it even bigger. Today even that person can travel in an aeroplane who once only dreamt of it. You must have seen many such pictures on social media wherein ordinary citizens of the country are sharing their experiences of being at the airport. Nothing can compare to the joy when their son or daughter takes them on an airplane ride for the first time.

India’s achievements related to infrastructure are also a subject of research today. When we set aside Rs 10 lakh crore for infrastructure development, it also creates lakhs of jobs. When we link an area with infrastructure like railways and highways, its impact is not limited to the convenience of travelling only. It connects farmers and entrepreneurs to new markets; it connects tourists to tourist places; it connects students to the college of their choice. With this thinking, today India is making record investment on modern infrastructure.

Today the country is moving ahead with the cultural idea of ‘Jan Seva Hi Prabhu Seva’ or public service is service to God. Our spiritual practice here has nurtured this idea for centuries. Pilgrimages like Puri, sacred places like Jagannath Temple have been its centres. Many poor people have been receiving food from the ‘Mahaprasad’ of Lord Jagannath for centuries.

In line with this spirit, today the country is running the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, giving free ration to 80 crore people. Today, if a poor person needs treatment, he gets free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh through the Ayushman card. Crores of poor have got pucca houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Be it Ujjwala gas cylinder in the house or water supply under Jal Jeevan Mission, today the poor are also getting all those basic facilities, for which they had to wait for years earlier.

For the rapid development of India, balanced development of the states in India is equally necessary. Today the country is trying to ensure that no state lags behind in the race of development due to lack of resources. That is why in the 15th Finance Commission, a higher budget was recommended for states like Odisha and Bengal compared to before. A state like Odisha has also been blessed with such a vast natural wealth. But, earlier due to wrong policies the states had to be deprived of their own resources.

We reformed the mining policy keeping in mind the mineral wealth. Due to this, the revenue of all the states having mineral wealth has increased considerably. After the introduction of GST, the income from tax has also increased a lot. Today these resources are being used for the development of the state and in the service of the poor and the rural areas. The central government is paying full attention to ensure that Odisha can successfully combat natural calamities. Our government has given more than Rs 8000 crore to Odisha for disaster management and NDRF. This has helped in protecting both people and money during the cyclone.

I am confident that this pace of development for Odisha, Bengal and the entire country will increase even further in the coming times. With the grace of Lord Jagannath and Maa Kali, we will definitely reach the goal of a new and developed India. With this wish, my heartiest thanks to all of you! Jai Jagannath to all once again!

Railway projects being launched in Odisha will significantly boost connectivity and enhance 'Ease of Travel' for the citizens. https://t.co/WWls5vqJNc — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) May 18, 2023

Coromandel Express accident: Hospitals turn into war zones

After visiting the accident site at Balasore, PM Modi will visit the Cuttack Hospital where hundreds of victims are admitted.

Balasore Medical College and Hospital, nearest to the accident site, shelved the maximum load of patients. The hospital looked like a war zone on Friday night with an endless entry of injured passengers and bodies. Policemen and locals volunteered to donate blood to help the injured.

Odisha train accident: PM Modi to visit Balasore today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Odisha on Saturday to survey the site of the three-train accident in Balasore district. The horrific train accident on Friday night claimed the lives of nearly 300 people and left over 900 injured.

According to the details, the prime minister will first go to the site of the train accident site and then visit a hospital in Cuttack, where some of the injured have been admitted.

Meanwhile, the railways today said the rescue operations at the accident site were over.

The train crash, the fourth deadliest in India according to available records, happened near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Balasore district, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on Friday, prompting the Railway Ministry to order a probe.

The inquiry into the train accident will be led by AM Chowdhary, Commissioner Railway Safety, South East Circle, the Indian Railways said in a statement. The Commissioner Railway Safety comes under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

ODISHA TRAIN ACCIDENT: THE IMPACT

A goods train was also involved in the accident as some of the coaches of the Coromandel Express, which was heading to Chennai, hit its wagons after getting derailed.

Gas cutters were used to extricate the bodies from under the derailed coaches. Disaster management personnel and firemen were also drawn in to extricate bodies.

Railway tracks were almost destroyed at the spot as mangled coaches lay strewn all over, with some having mounted on another, while a few coaches turned turtle due to the impact. Pijush Poddar, a resident of Berhampore in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, was travelling to Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Express to join work there when the accident happened.

"We were jolted and suddenly saw the train bogie turn to one side. Many of us were thrown out of the compartment by the momentum of the derailment. When we managed to crawl out, we found bodies lying all around," he told PTI.

Locals said they heard consecutive loud sounds, following which they rushed to the spot and found the derailed coaches, which were nothing but "a mangled heap of steel".

"The local people really went out on a limb to help us... They not only helped in pulling out people but retrieved our luggage and got us water, " Rupam Banerjee, one of the passengers, told reporters.

One of the coaches “was pushed into the ground " as another from a neighbouring train collapsed on top of it, passengers said.

Not Odisha Govt, Railway Line In Kendrapara Was Because Of Baijayant Panda’s Continuous Efforts: BJP

Odishatv Bureau

  • Odishatv Bureau
  • Published: Tuesday, 30 April 2024

Last updated: 30 April 2024, 08:25 PM IST

Railway infrastructure development in Kendrapara is because of whose efforts? The ruling BJD has been strongly criticized for allegedly eyeing to take the credit for railway projects, which were initiated and completed under active supervision of BJP national vice-president and Kendrapara Lok Sabha candidate Baijayant Panda in coordination with Central ministers. Recently, BJD’s Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak claimed that rail connectivity in Kendrapara was possible due to the Odisha government. However, BJP has presented facts to counter the propaganda of the BJD. The ruling BJD has the habit of hijacking and branding central schemes as its own. This time, the BJD and its leaders are eying to take credit for railway projects, alleged BJP’s Kendrapara district vice-president Sanjay Rath on Tuesday. Targetting BJD leader Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak for his recent remarks, Sanjay Rath said that Baijayant Panda’s contribution to the Haridaspur-Paradip railway line is immense. At a press meet in Kendrapara, Sanjay Rath said Baijayant Panda had placed a demand for rail connectivity in the region in 2009. It was Jay Panda who actively pursued the demand and worked in coordination with senior officials in Delhi, he reiterated. From the project’s sanction, land acquisition to other processes, Panda was behind every aspect due to which railway services have now started in the region. Two days back, BJD’s Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak claimed that the project was possible due to the Odisha government. Nayak was MLA from Mahakalpada for 15 years and also held the portfolio of minister. But, till now, people are depending on boats to cross river due to proper connectivity and lack of bridges,” said Rath. In Odisha, the BJD has been in power for the last 25 years but the party has done nothing for the people of Mahakalpada. The concerned BJD leader (Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak) is only misleading people. During elections, big hoardings of steel plants and other projects are put up. But later all such hoardings vanish from the area, Rath said.“It was due to Baijayant Panda’s initiatives that railway connectivity has been possible here. After the railway project, industries should have come up. But unfortunately, everything has remained in hoardings; BJD and its leader are only misleading people. Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak was health minister in the past. However, there is not a single good hospital in Kendrapara for critically ill patients. As a result, patients are usually shifted to Cuttack,” the BJP leader said.Taking a jibe at Nayak, Rath further said that the BJD leader also held the portfolio as the energy minister but the power cut scenario in Kendrapara is worse and there are places in the region which are yet to get electricity.Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak has failed to resolve even basic issues like road and health facilities. While being MP, Jay Panda constructed several projects like drinking water, stadiums and auditoriums among others in the area. Instead of branding Central schemes including railway projects as BJD's work, Atanau Sabyasachi Nayak and BJD should keep a record of what they have done in Mahakalpada and Kendrapara. People are very well aware of the reality of the railway project and they will give a befitting reply to Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak in the upcoming election, Rath added.

Lok Sabha elections 2024: PM Modi says `pride of Odisha under threat`

A mid ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024 , Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should get an opportunity to serve Odisha, reported news agency PTI.

The Prime Minister said the pride and dignity of Odisha is being destroyed, and the BJP should be given a chance to serve the state.

PM Modi said this during an interview with a news channel, while responding to a question related to Odisha, reported PTI.

Speaking on the BJP`s relationship with BJD in Odisha, PM Modi said: "The BJD has given support to us at the Centre on the basis of issues. There are many other parties who have provided us issue-based support too."

PM Modi also said that the BJP has no truck with the BJD in Odisha.

"The pride of Odisha and Odia language is at stake. I don`t think Odia people will tolerate this for a long time. Odisha has so many resources that it could have become the richest state in the country today," PM Modi added, reported PTI.

He said every Odia has the aspiration regarding Odisha to become the richest state.

Notably, Assembly and Lok Sabha elections 2024 will be held simultaneously in Odisha in four phases from May 13 to June 1. The results will be out on June 4.

Meanwhile, attacking the Modi government over key issues in Karnataka, the Congress on Monday questioned the "delay" in the vital Bagalkote-Kudachi Railway line project and also asked when it is going to pay the state`s MGNREGS workers their wages.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posed questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his rally in Bagalkote in Karnataka.

"Why has the Modi Government failed to deliver the Bagalkote-Kudachi Railway line? Why is the Modi Government holding up the Upper Bhadra and Mahadayi projects? When will the PM pay Karnataka`s MGNREGA workers?" Ramesh said in a post on X.

Elaborating on what he said were "jumla details", Ramesh said the Bagalkote-Kudachi line of the South-Western Railway has now been delayed by more than eight years.

As of today, only 33 per cent, or 46 km of the 142 km line has been completed, he said.

PM Modi likely to address 2 poll rallies in Odisha on May 6

railway minister visit to odisha

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the state on May 6, informed state BJP leader Golak Mohapatra on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters here, Mohapatra said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing two election rallies in Odisha on May 6.

Sharing the schedule, the BJP leader said that PM Narendra Modi will first address a massive public meeting at around 10 am in Berhampur. Later, he will address another huge gathering in Nabarangpur at 12:30 pm.

"PM Narendra Modi is an inspiration and the people of Odisha are eagerly waiting for his visit to the state. Be it PM Awas yojana, toilets and others, there is massive corruption in Odisha. Apart from this, Odia language, literature and Odia Asmita is in danger. The governance is in the hands of non-Odias. BJP is worried over such a situation in the state. PM Modi has expressed his concern as well," said Mohapatra.

High speed trains are lined up after undergoing maintenance in preparation for the annual Lunar New Year travel peak, at a maintenance base in Wuhan, in China's central Hubei province early on January 26, 2024. China has the world's largest high-speed rail network, covering nearly 28 thousand miles.

For the last 60 years a transportation revolution has largely passed America by. Bullet trains were invented in Japan in the early 1960s. Since then, countries all over the world have adopted the technology and constructed sprawling networks of high speed rail lines. Despite spending billions of dollars in federal funding, he U.S. lags far behind. But a recent visit from Japan's Prime minister has revived interest in bullet train projects around the country. One of those projects is in Texas – a proposed high-speed rail line between Houston and Dallas. NPR's Andrew Limbong s peaks with Dallas Morning News mobility and transportation reporter Amber Gaudet about what it will take to get Texas' high-speed rail project completed, and what it could mean for high-speed rail in America.
