Switzerland is world famous for its delicious chocolate. Whether you are traveling to or living in Switzerland, you should indulge in the many fun chocolate experiences in this country, including chocolate factories with visitor centers, workshops, tastings and chocolate-themed city tours.

Which chocolate museum is the best?

1. lindt home of chocolate (near zürich), 2. mastrani chocolarium – best for kids (near appenzell), 3. maison cailler – the classic (near lausanne), 4. aeschbach chocowelt (near lucerne), 5. max chocolatier (zürich & lucerne), 6. chez camille bloch – discovery world (near bern) , 7. alprose chocolate experience (near lugano), 8. swiss chocolate adventure at swiss museum of transport (near lucerne), 8. honold schoggitram (zürich), 9. garcoa schoggi safari (zürich), 10. la flor (zürich), 11. funky chocolate club (interlaken), 12. choco emotions (neuchatel), 13. self-guided chocolate tour of zürich, 14. chocolate indulge tour of zürich, 15. geneva chocolate walking tour, chocolate factories & museums.

Most of these chocolate factories are all pretty similar: a multi-media tour about the history of chocolate through the ages and specifically in Switzerland, how cocoa beans are grown, harvested and processed, view of factory equipment, and a chocolate tasting.

At the end of the tour, you can often make and decorate your own chocolate bar for an extra fee (about CHF 10). Many chocolate factories also offer more in depth chocolate workshops that must be booked in advance.

As I detail below, some have more fun activities for the kids, some have slicker presentations, some are info heavy, others are more entertaining. I would just pick one that is the closest to where you are. They are all fun!

Everyone was so happy Lindt finally opened a chocolate museum at its Kilchberg factory near Zürich. Their interactive museum is beautiful and very educational, with an immense amount of information both on displays and through the audio guide. Although there are a few games for kids (and an audio guide specifically kids), it’s not the most entertaining option on our list.

We liked the multiple chocolate tasting stations through the museum, including chocolate fountains and a dispenser where you have to guess the chocolate flavor. They also offer chocolate making workshops, which are particularly popular for holidays like Christmas and Easter where you make the signature bear and bunny shaped chocolates.

This chocolate factory and museum is our favorite of the bunch because it’s all about the fun, with wacky styling influenced by Willy Wonka. So many interactive exhibits to keep the kids busy: buttons to push, knobs to pull, dials to spin and selfie booths with props.

During the week at certain hours, you can see the real factory machines running, forming and wrapping real chocolates, not fake machines just for display like at other chocolate factories.

There are lots of chocolate tasting throughout the tour, including chocolate fountains and dispensers of flavored chocolate bars. At the end of the tour, you can decorate a chocolate bar for CHF 10. They also have a variety of chocolate workshops which must be booked in advance.

Website: www.chocolarium.ch Address: Toggenburgerstrasse 41, 9230 Flawil Open: Tues – Fri 10:00 to 18:00, Sat & Sun 10:00 to 17:00 ( see current schedule ) Cost 2023: CHF 14/adult, CHF 8/child aged 6-16, under 6 free.

It’s all about the history here, since Cailler was the first proper chocolate maker in Switzerland. The history part of the tour has a multi-media show about the history of Swiss chocolate that moves you through a series of rooms as doors close behind you. So you can’t move freely around following your interests. But once that part ends, you can freely explore the chocolate production area.

The chocolate tasting has changed for the pandemic, with individual disposable cups holding 4 different pralines, instead of a long buffet. But you can still eat as many as you like. You can decorate a chocolate bar in the gift shop. They also offer chocolate workshops that must be booked in advance.

Aeschbach is well known in Switzerland as the producer of the Schoggitaler chocolate coins sold by school children as a fundraiser (my kids have done this every year). Like other chocolate factory visitor centers, you walk through a series of decorated rooms with a variety of interactive display teaching you about the history and production of chocolate.

During the tour you can sample chocolate, including small chocolate cubes of varying cocoa percentages, chocolate coins and chocolate fountain with toppings. On weekdays you can see people working on the chocolate factory floor. After the museum tour, you can make your own chocolate bar for CHF 10.

One of the best chocolatiers in Switzerland, with wide range of luxurious chocolate confections. We particularly like their unusual praline flavors like rosehip & hibiscus tea and madarine & safron. At their Zürich and Lucerne locations, they host offer a 60 mins chocolate tasting for up to 4 people for CHF 300. At the Lucerne location, they offer chocolate workshops ranging in price from CHF 340 – 600 for up to 4 people.

While the chocolate museum does tell a little about the general history of chocolate, it focuses more on the history of the Swiss chocolate industry, the Camille Bloch family and the popular Ragusa and Torino chocolate brands. The museum is quite stylish and fun to explore.

I particularly liked the live chocolate making demonstration, where the friendly chocolatiers temper chocolate on the marble and create the confections by hand, so you can really see the work and skill that go into make the treat. Then you can taste the items made during the demo. They offer a children’s birthday workshop, where they make Ragusa bars and chocolate fondue.

Alprose is not as well known to consumers as other Swiss brands, but it’s quite delicious. They make one of my favorite dark chocolates, particularly for baking. We like this company because their chocolate is produced CO 2 -neutrally and they use sustainable packaging materials.  In addition to general chocolate history, the Alprose chocolate museum focuses on the story of the Alprose brand.

This museum is not quite as fancy as other chocolate factories, but they have one of the best live factory floor experiences, with many chocolate machines in view (running only on weekdays). At the end of the tour, you can taste chocolate in their “Nostalgia” shop.

Website: www.alprose.ch Address: Via Rompada 36, 6987 Caslano Open: Mon – Sat 9:00 – 17:00 Cost 2023: CHF 5/adults, CHF 2/children aged 6-15, free under 6 yrs old

This chocolate tour is an optional paid attraction at the Swiss Museum of Transport (aka Luzern Verkehrhaus), not included with your museum entrance fee. On the “Swiss Chocolate Adventure”, you ride through 10 rooms on an automated traveling cart, learning about the history of chocolate, the ins and outs of chocolate production and the Swiss chocolate industry.

Our friend Hana reported on this for us and thought it was a little expensive for what you get compared to other chocolate factories in Switzerland. For example, instead of “all you can eat” chocolate tastings, you only get two Lindt chocolate balls during the tour.

The website says that visitors of the Swiss Chocolate Adventure may participate in the chocolate tastings at the Lindt gift shop there, including a chocolate fountain, implying this is included with your ticket. We’ll have to investigate this next time we go.

Chocolate Tastings

These Swiss companies offer chocolate tastings for small groups.

For a couple weeks at the end of October and beginning of November, the Honold Confiserie hosts a chocolate tram, where you ride around the city for about 20 mins while you drink hot chocolate, eat cake and taste a variety of chocolate pralines. There are limited spots, which book out quickly. So put this on your calendar and start checking the website in late September.

Garcoa is a small batch “bean to bar” chocolate company, producing high quality chocolate bars in close cooperation with cocoa farmers. Their chocolate bars are carried in many specialty shops throughout Switzerland.

They offer a fantastic “Schoggi Safari” tour, where you learn about their chocolate production process in their small facility and taste all their chocolate bars. The safari is only available a few times a year.

Location: Butzenstasse 60, 8038 Zurich Duration: 60-90 mins Cost: CHF 20/person Booking: www.garcoa.ch/schoggisafari

La Flor is a gourmet small batch chocolate produced in Zürich and sold at fine resellers around the city. On two afternoons a week, you can visit the La Flor production facilities in Zürich for free and sample their chocolates.

Location: Uetlibergstrasse 65, 8045 Zürich When: Thurs & Fridays 15:00 – 18:00 Cost: free More info: laflor.ch

Chocolate Workshops

These locations offer chocolate making workshops, but do not have a factory floor or chocolate museum. We haven’t tried any of them. I just leave them here as reference.

If you are traveling to the Jungfrau Region, the closest chocolate experience is at the Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken. They offer chocolate workshops, where you learn about the origins of chocolate then learn how to create a chocolate bar from tempering the chocolate to pouring and filling techniques. You also get to eat as much chocolate as you like during the workshop. Workshops are held in English and last 75 minutes. Must book in advance.

Address: Postgasse 10, 3800 Interlaken, Switzerland Open: generally workshops Wed – Sun at 11:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00  Cost: Chocolate workshop CHF 69/adults, CHF 59/children aged 4-14 Booking: funkychocolateclub.com

Choco Emotions offers a variety of workshops, which can be booked for a group (usually a minimum of 8-12 participants). The owner wanted to keep alive the chocolate tradition of Suchard, which used to have its factories in the Neuchâtel. The website is only in French, so I assume the workshops are also held in French. We haven’t tried Choco Emotions workshops ourselves, so we can’t vouch personally for the experience.

Address: Rue des Amandiers 2, 2000 Neuchâtel Open: private groups on demand  Cost: Workshop prices range from CHF 25 – CHF 95 Booking: www.choco-emotions.ch

Along the way, you learn about Swiss chocolate history and taste a variety of sweets. At the end of the tour, you learn how to taste and pair chocolate with a connoisseur.

Dates: available for booking on weekdays Cost 2023: 1-3 people CHF 320, cost varies for larger groups Duration: 2.5 hrs Booking: www.zuerich.com

On this three hour walking tour of Geneva, you’ll visit 5 chocolate factories and patisseries and taste several chocolate confections along the way.

Dates: English tours on Mon – Sat 10:00 and 14:30 Cost 2023: CHF 99/adult, CHF 69/child Duration: 3 hours Booking: www.geneve.com

Note: Frey used to have a great chocolate visitor center but it sadly closed permanently during the pandemic. We have not included Läderach because, like SWISS air and others, we do not agree with their leadership’s outspoken views against the LBGTQ+ community and women’s rights.

9 Best Chocolate Factories to Visit in Switzerland

If there’s one thing that Switzerland is famous for , it’s Swiss chocolate. I mean, who doesn’t love the creamy texture and the fragrant mixture of cocoa and fresh alpine milk?

However, instead of just buying chocolate at some of the best chocolate shops in Switzerland, we recommend enhancing your experience by visiting chocolate factories in Switzerland!

Here are nine of the best Swiss chocolate factories to get you started!

Table of Contents

1. Maison Cailler – Broc

Maison Cailler

While Cailler isn’t necessarily the most internationally well-known Swiss chocolate brand , it IS one of the oldest chocolate factories in Switzerland, having been around since 1819.

If you’d like to dive right into the historical past of this storied Swiss chocolate brand, then you’ll definitely want to spare a day to visit its main factory, the Maison Cailler.

Here, not only will you be able to watch the entire chocolate-making process from scratch, but you’ll also be able to join an hour-long interactive tour through the museum and discover the history of Chocolat Cailler.

Of course, at the end of the tour is the one experience every fan of Swiss chocolates looks out for the most: Chocolate tasting! In addition, you could also try making your very own chocolate bar by signing up for one of the workshops in advance!

2. Maestrani Chocolarium – Flawil

Maestrani Chocolarium

Another chocolate factory in Switzerland that comes with a long history of excellence is Maestrani. It was founded way back in 1852 in Lucerne before moving to Flawil just seven years later, where they continue to produce their signature Munz, Minor, and Maestrani chocolates.

In 2017, the company officially opened Maestrani Chocolarium, a museum and Swiss chocolate factory that is known for offering one of the most unique chocolate factory tours in Switzerland. It starts with an immersive audiovisual introduction of the brand’s history before ushering visitors down into the very heart of Maestrani’s chocolate factory.

There, you can watch as expert chocolatiers create delightful sweet treats from scratch. And yes, before you ask, you’ll be able to sample those very creations later on in the tour. Alternatively, you can sign up for your very own chocolate-making class where you can design your very own chocolate bar!

3. House of Läderach – Bilten

House of Läderach

Compared to Cailler and Mastrani, House of Laderach is one of the newest chocolate factories in Switzerland. That said, they’ve actually been around since the early 60s! And while they may not be Swiss chocolate centurions, the quality of their products is clear to see (and taste!).

The most famous product of this family-owned business is their artisanal chocolate which is flavored with different unique ingredients such as candied oranges, roasted hazelnuts, pistachios, and more. You can watch the entire process from bean to bar at House of Läderach, their flagship museum and chocolate factory in Switzerland which opened in late 2020.

In addition, you can also learn about the meteoric rise of the company on a guided tour and create your very own chocolate from scratch. If you love artisan chocolate, then this is one of the best Switzerland chocolate factory tours you’ll ever experience!

Fun fact: in 2018, Elias Läderach, the grandson of the original founder of the company, was awarded the lofty title of World Chocolate Master!

4. Chocolat Frey Visitor Center – Buchs

Chocolat Frey Visitor Center

Frey might not be the first Swiss chocolate brand you think of. However, in Switzerland, it’s one of the most beloved household names, with its products available in most supermarkets and stores.

The appeal of this family-owned business comes from its long, colorful history dating back to 1887 when it opened its first factory.

In 2014, it opened its very first visitors’ center which gave chocolate lovers a glimpse into the process of making their favorite chocolates. While it isn’t the biggest chocolate factory in Switzerland, the interactive tour has all the ingredients (pun not intended) you need for a memorable experience.

One unique aspect of the tour is the rare opportunity to taste roasted cocoa beans before they’re turned into chocolate. If that’s not to your fancy, don’t worry because there’s plenty of chocolate to taste at the end of the tour too!

5. Camille Bloch – Courtelary

Camille Bloch

The Camille Bloch chocolate factory is one of the closest chocolate factories to Zurich, lying only about an hour away from the Swiss capital in the Canton of Bern.

As another chocolate factory in Switzerland fast approaching its 100-year anniversary, the Camille Bloch Chocolate Factory is another must-visit for chocolate lovers. Like the other factories on this list, a visit entails a factory tour and a tasting session.

However, the most memorable experience of a chocolate factory tour here is watching as talented chocolatiers make the company’s famous Ragusa and Torino chocolates right in front of your eyes!

And yes, you’ll get to taste this fresh chocolate immediately afterward! If you get hooked on the taste, don’t fret because you can sign up for a class to learn the very secrets to making your own custom chocolate bars!

6. Aeschbach’s ChocoWelt – Root

Another family-owned Swiss chocolate factory is Aeschbach Chocolatier, founded in 1972. This particular brand prides itself on its incredible handmade chocolates, including its famous Bsetzistei (cobblestone-shaped pralines).

Their factory and museum are housed in a building that’s aptly named ChocoWelt, or ChocoWorld in English. As you might expect, you can observe as their famous chocolates are made from scratch, learn fun facts about the chocolate-making process, and make your own Aeschbach chocolate bar right at the end.

If you crave even more chocolate, there’s also a shop and on-site cafe where you can fuel up on even more chocolaty goodness!

7. Lindt Home of Chocolate – Zurich

Lindt Home of Chocolate

Of all the Swiss chocolate brands, Lindt is easily one of the most recognizable names. You’re probably wondering why I left it so late on this list then. To answer that question, it’s because Lindt’s main visitors’ center isn’t technically a factory. Instead, it’s an interactive museum and experience zone poetically called Lindt Home of Chocolate.

Located in Kilchberg, Lindt Home of Chocolate is one of the only places where you can join a chocolate factory tour in Zurich. And what a tour it is!  From the very moment you enter, you’ll see a magnificent chocolate fountain measuring over 30 feet tall, with over 1.4 tonnes of chocolate being pumped out throughout the day!

Once you’re done staring in awe, you can sign up for a museum tour where you can learn all there is to know about Lindt, its history, and how its chocolates are produced. Children will love the end of the tour, where you can eat as much chocolate as you can!

8. Alprose Chocolate Experience – Lugano

 Alprose

With Swiss chocolate being such a famous treat around the world, it comes as no surprise that there are plenty of artisan chocolate brands in the country most of us have never heard of. Alprose is one such underrated gem that’s known for its sustainable chocolates (carbon-free production) and unique packaging.

You can visit the headquarters of Alprose in Lugano but like Lindt Home of Chocolate, the Alprose Chocolate Experience isn’t a conventional factory. It is more like a museum that celebrates the Alprose brand and general chocolate history. That said, they are known for offering one of the best chocolate factory experiences in Switzerland.

You’ll be able to get up close to the chocolate machines running in full view on the production floor. As expected, at the end of the tour, you get to shop and eat as much chocolate as you want too!

9. Verkehrshaus Swiss Chocolate Adventure – Lucerne

Verkehrshaus Swiss Chocolate

Unlike most of the other factories on this list, the Verkehrshau Swiss Chocolate Adventure is not attached to any chocolate brand. In fact, it’s not even a chocolate factory. However, I had to include it on this list simply because it’s one of the most popular locations to visit for a chocolate-centric tour.

Also known as the Swiss Museum of Transport, Verkehrshaus opened its doors in 1959 and uses interactive multimedia presentations to guide visitors through the mesmerizing process of turning cocoa beans into delicious Swiss chocolate.

Of course, at the end of the tour, you get to taste and buy some chocolate as well. While the selection may not be as diverse as the other factories, it is still a bucket list destination chocolate lovers can’t miss in Switzerland.

Bonus: Funky Chocolate Club – Interlaken

Funky Chocolate Club

I’ll be honest: This isn’t a chocolate factory in Switzerland. Instead, it’s a humble artisan shop in Interlaken that offers, in my personal opinion, the best chocolate-making workshop in Switzerland.

As you start your hour-long workshop, you’ll be introduced to the different kinds of cocoa beans and chocolates you’ll be working with. By that, I mean tasting everything on the table. Soon, it’s time to make your own custom chocolate bar!

Under the watchful eye of your master chocolatier, you’ll melt, blend, and tamper your chocolate until you produce a bar that’s just as good as any branded chocolate in Switzerland! Once you’re done and happy with your creation, feel free to take a selfie to commemorate the experience and shop for more chocolates to bring home for your loved ones!

Can’t get enough of Swiss chocolate? Then check out this list of the top Swiss chocolate brands and make a list of the best Swiss souvenirs to bring home on your next trip to Switzerland!

Chocolate Factories in Switzerland that Offer Tours (2024)

' src=

Switzerland and chocolate are a match made in heaven. Everyone knows it, but few know how to experience the magic of chocolate firsthand in Switzerland. One of the top questions we get is about chocolate factory tours in Switzerland.

A common request goes like this: “My in-laws from abroad are coming to town, and I would like to take them to a typical Swiss chocolate factory. Any recommendations?”

Recommendations we have. From the behind-the-scenes look at chocolate production to a fantasy world that reminds of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory , there are several fun chocolate factories in Switzerland.

Most of them offer a museum with a self-guided tour on the history of chocolate. Some chocolate factories allow for a more in-depth look at chocolate production with knowledgeable staff who will show you the ropes. And most all chocolate factories in Switzerland have a factory store attached where chocolate is sold at a discount.

These are the best chocolate factories in Switzerland with tours for the public:

The läderach chocolate experience in bilten.

Have you ever caught yourself gazing into a Läderach shop? They have this captivating way of breaking and stacking their thin artisanal chocolate… If your answer is yes, the Läderach Chocolate Experience will be perfect for you. The chocolate discovery path leads from the rainforest to a tasting section, educating visitors about the origin of cocoa beans and the production of fine Läderach chocolate along the way.

Läderach Chocolate Experience-01

This is where all the magic is happening, and visitors can peek inside the production facility. From quality control of incoming cocoa beans to the packaging of the final product, many steps along the mysterious process of chocolate making can be witnessed firsthand.

Consult the Läderach website ahead of your visit to schedule a guided tour in English.

The Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory in Broc

Nestled between Fribourg and Montreux is Maison Cailler , a museum-like chocolate factory out of a picture book. At the museum, the tour starts with an interactive multimedia show on the history of Swiss chocolate. The exhibit also discusses the ingredients for chocolate production, such as sugar, cocoa beans, cocoa powder, nuts, coffee, and others.

Maison Cailler

A real-world production line shows the process from molten chocolate to the packaged bars we can buy at supermarkets – or the attached factory shop. But anyone who has visited Maison Cailler will tell you that their favorite part was the section where you can smell and taste as much chocolate as your heart desires…

Maison Cailler is open daily.

Romain Leemann Artisan Chocolatier in Bulle

The only constant about the chocolate creations of Romain Leemann is change. Always looking for new flavors, this artisanal chocolatier makes some exclusive limited-edition chocolates.

This is the chance to learn chocolate making from a true professional. Different activities include a praline workshop or a bachelor event to produce a chocolate gift for the bride-to-be. During a 45-minute children’s workshop, the little ones make their chocolate to take home.

The Camille Bloch Chocolate Factory in Courtelary

Hazelnut lovers are undoubtedly familiar with Ragusa and Torino, two of the flagship chocolate bars produced by Camille Bloch. At the new CHEZ Camille Bloch exhibit, you will learn a little-known fact about these favorites: they result from a cocoa shortage during the Second World War.

CHEZ Camille Bloch Chocolate Workshop

At the site in Courtelary, there is a production facility and a chocolate discovery tour where you can learn about the secrets behind Ragusa and Torino. As a bonus, you may engrave a special message onto a Ragusa bar! And needless to say, there will be plenty of opportunities along the way to tease your taste buds.

Chocolats Camille Bloch is open daily (except Mondays) from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Maestrani’s Chocolarium in Flawil

The Chocolarium near St. Gallen is a showcase for Maestrani, best known for their Minor chocolate sticks. It is no understatement that this chocolate factory comes with all the bells and whistles. For one, there is a chocolate discovery tour through a maze of colorful rooms where visitors chase the answer to the exhibit’s central question: How does luck get into chocolate?

Maestrani Chocolarium in Flawil-01

Towards the end of the self-guided tour, there is a chocolate workshop in a funky factory environment, allowing visitors to decorate and cool their chocolate bar. And those who visit the Chocolarium on a weekday can watch the factory floor from a bird’s-eye view while snacking on delicious little Minor bars. To picture all of this, read about our experience visiting the Chocolarium.

Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken

Have you ever wondered how to tell a chocolate bar’s type, quality, and percentage of cocoa? And have you ever wanted to create your very own Swiss chocolate?

To educate and entertain, the Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken might just be the most hands-on chocolate factory in Switzerland. It is also one of Switzerland’s most unique chocolate boutiques, with shapes such as chocolate watches or cameras.

Since 2014, the Funky Chocolate Club has become a meeting point for chocolate lovers. The new owners continue the legacy of chocolate workshops that cover everything from chocolate tasting to chocolate making and decorating.

If you still have space after attending a workshop with an all-you-can-eat permission, why not stop by the Hüsi brew bar next door? It is run by Brad, one of the current owners.

Lindt Home of Chocolate / Lindt Chocolate Factory in Kilchberg

Have you ever seen those commercials where chocolate makers in white aprons and chef hats pour liquid chocolate into praline molds? The chocolate maker could be you at the Lindt Home of Chocolate by Lindt & Sprüngli near Zürich!

We have previously stepped behind the heavy doors of this real-life chocolate factory. And as part of the chocolate workshop , an instructor taught us how to create our very own pralines to take home. Insider tip: book a chocolate workshop before Easter or Christmas to make your own Lindt chocolate Easter bunny or teddy bear.

The chocolate museum tour at Lindt Home of Chocolate is educational yet not as entertaining as some other museums. The audio guide, including a dedicated audio guide for children, gives fascinating insights into the history of chocolate making. And chocoholics will love the various chocolate-tasting stations along the way, the giant chocolate fountain, and the Lindt factory shop.

Choco emotionS in Neuchâtel

Suchard may not be top of mind regarding Swiss chocolate brands. But for one lifelong resident of Neuchâtel, the sweet childhood memories of the Suchard chocolate factory were reason enough to open a museum and workshop.

FAQs about chocolate factories in Switzerland

There are 16 chocolate manufacturers in Switzerland, including large ones like Barry Callebaut and Lindt & Sprüngli, and many small and medium-sized chocolate makers.

Yes, many Swiss chocolate factories are family-owned and have been passed down from generation to generation, steeped in family tradition. Some artisanal makers have a history dating back to the 18th century.

The Lindt Home of Chocolate is considered the largest, offering a more than nine-meter-high chocolate fountain, a multimedia museum, a café, chocolate courses, and the biggest Lindt chocolate shop in the world.

That’s a tough one; you might get nine million different answers depending on who you ask. I’d say that Toblerone is widely regarded as the best chocolate brand in Switzerland. Established in 1908 in Bern, Switzerland, Toblerone is known for its unique triangular shape inspired by the Matterhorn peak.

Unfortunately, the Toblerone factory is not open for tours or visits from the public. This is due to the confidential nature of the chocolate-making process, which requires strict security measures to protect the recipes and techniques used to create the signature Toblerone chocolate.

Maison Cailler in Broc is considered the oldest chocolate factory and chocolate brand in Switzerland. Their popular exhibit is open daily for chocolate lovers from all over the world.

Most Swiss chocolate factories have a museum with a self-guided tour of the history of chocolate and a factory store where chocolate is sold at a discount. Some chocolate factories offer a more in-depth look at chocolate production with knowledgeable staff who will show you the ropes.

A Guide to Switzerland's Finest Chocolate Factory Tours

Updated: Mar 30

Switzerland, a paradise for chocolate lovers, is home to world-renowned chocolate factories offering unique experiences. In this guide, I share my top two chocolate factory visits—Lindt Home of Chocolate in Kilchberg, Zurich, and House of Läderach in Bilten—alongside three other highly recommended tours. These destinations not only allow you to taste exquisite chocolates but also immerse you in the art of chocolate making.

Lindt Chocolate Factory , Kilchberg, Zurich:

Our recommendation for your journey to the Lindt Home of Chocolate is to begin with a boat trip from Zurich Bürkliplatz to Kilchberg . It is the short lake cruise you'll want to take. Since there are two boats going in opposite directions, you can either take the long tour along the Gold Coast (east side) of Lake Zurich or the short tour along the Silver Coast on the west side.

Once you arrive in Kilchberg, head straight towards the main street. After crossing the main street, look for a little path (Pilgerweg) located between the first and second row of buildings. This shortcut leads you directly to the factory, allowing you to bypass walking along the main road. This convenient route offers a quick and easy way to reach the Lindt Home of Chocolate, making your visit smoother and more direct.

Upon entering the main hall of the Lindt Home of Chocolate, visitors are immediately met with a notable feature: a large chocolate fountain. This fountain serves as a focal point and introduction to what the venue has to offer.

The Lindt Home of Chocolate provides various interactive experiences, including chocolate-making courses . These sessions, led by experienced chocolatiers, teach participants about chocolate crafting techniques, from tempering to molding, allowing them to create their own chocolate pieces.

Additionally, the facility offers guided tours of the factory. These tours give insight into the chocolate-making process, from the selection of cocoa beans to the finished product, showcasing the precision and skill involved.

Online pre-registration for courses and tours is advised due to their popularity and the likelihood of them being fully booked well in advance. This ensures visitors can participate in these hands-on experiences.

To finish your day at the Lindt Chocolate Factory, make sure to enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate and a sweet treat in the café.

Insider tip 1: The factory outlet , which is not located in the main building but a short walk away, near the parking area, offers a variety of Lindt chocolates at exclusive discounts. It's ideal for purchasing gifts or personal treats.

Insider tip 2: During the summer, the nearby Kilchberg pool , heated with steam from the Lindt factory, provides a refreshing spot to cool off and relax. This pool is part of the Kilchberg Badi, which also offers pleasant lake access for those wishing to swim in the lake.

Insider tip 3: For those wishing to swim in the lake while on a budget and preferring not to pay the entrance fee for Kilchberg Badi, consider taking a short 10-minute walk along the main road to Rüschlikon Badi . This facility is free and provides all the essentials of a badi, including bathrooms, changing rooms, kids pool, a cafeteria, and a pleasant green area for relaxation.

House of Läderach, Bilten:

House of Läderach: Take the train from Zurich HB or drive by car to Bilten in Canton Glarus. Although it's a bit smaller than the Lindt Chocolate Factory, it's my favorite chocolate, so I often come here because they have great deals on large pieces of chocolate (e.g., 2 for the price of 1). While you're there, you can create your own chocolate , which is fun for kids. You pour your choice of chocolate into a mold and then add sweets and sprinkles before it sets. The House of Läderach also has a nice café where you can enjoy a sweet treat and coffee. Similar to Lindt, you can also book a tour of the factory and other experiences on their website.

Self made chocolate hear in the House of Läderach

Insider tip 1: The House of Läderach likely won't fill an entire day, so consider extending your visit to the area by exploring the nearby town of Weesen. Park your car at Parkplatz Weesen | Speerplatz and head down to the Linthpromenade. Follow the canal into the town of Weesen. It's a beautiful walk with stunning views over Lake Walensee. You'll be surprised to find palm trees along the way. You can walk as far as you like; we usually stop for a drink at Lago Mio and then turn around.

Insider tip 2: One of my favorite viewpoints in Switzerland is not too far from Läderach. Drive up to Amden and park your car at Parkplatz Amden | Arvenbüel . From there, embark on a 30-40 minute hike to Aussichtspunkt Chapf . This spot offers an amazing view over Lake Walensee, a fjord-like lake surrounded by mountains. It's a breathtaking scene that captures the natural beauty of Switzerland, making it a must-visit for anyone in the area.

View from Aussichtspunkt Chapf

Maestrani Chocolarium:

This is not just a chocolate factory tour; it's an experience designed for all ages, especially captivating for children over 5. The tour is beautifully crafted, offering fascinating insights and plenty of chocolate tasting opportunities. The highlight for many is the chocolate decorating activity, and the friendly staff add to the experience. Reachable by public transport, the journey to the factory is an adventure in itself, complete with a walk along the Schoggiweg, where you'll see animals and a playground.

Maison Cailler – The Classic:

Located in Broc, Maison Cailler is a step into the real-life Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The tour is a mesmerizing walk through the history of chocolate and the development of the Cailler brand. Don't miss the opportunity to sample various chocolate flavors as you explore. After your visit, continue your culinary journey by visiting the Gruyères cheese factory and the castle, rounding up your day with a taste of Swiss heritage.

ChocoWelt by Aeschbach:

Near Lucerne, ChocoWelt by Aeschbach offers a complete chocolate journey, from cocoa bean to praline. Visitors can create their own 200g chocolate bar, making it an ideal personalized gift. The Chocolate Adventure World is a hit with kids, and the factory's café and shop offer a wide range of sweets and friendly service. For a scenic finish to your visit, drive to Parkplatz Meggenhorn and visit the castle, offering stunning views of Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps.

These chocolate factory tours in Switzerland are more than just tastings; they're immersive experiences that reveal the heart and soul of Swiss chocolate-making. Whether you're a chocolate aficionado or a curious explorer, these tours are sure to leave you with sweet memories and a deeper appreciation for one of Switzerland's most beloved exports.

Can I visit chocolate factories in Switzerland?

Yes, many Swiss chocolate factories welcome visitors. At these tours, you can often learn about the history of the company, the chocolate-making process, and have an opportunity to taste and purchase chocolates. Be sure to check the factories’ websites for opening hours, tours availability, and whether you need to book in advance, as this can vary.

How is Swiss chocolate made?

Swiss chocolate is renowned for its quality, which stems from a precise, traditional process. It typically starts with the selection of high-quality cacao beans. These beans are then roasted and ground into a fine paste known as chocolate liquor. Next, other ingredients like sugar, milk (for milk chocolate), and additional cocoa butter are added to the paste. The mixture is then “conched,” a process of stirring and aerating the chocolate, to develop its smooth texture and nuanced flavors. Swiss chocolate is particularly known for its smoothness due to the long conching process.

What makes Swiss chocolate unique?

Swiss chocolate is often characterized by its smooth, creamy texture and a perfect balance of sweetness. This is achieved through a specific conching process, where the chocolate is continuously stirred to achieve an extremely smooth texture. Swiss chocolate also often includes milk, even in the darker varieties, which contributes to its characteristic creaminess. Moreover, Swiss chocolatiers have a long history and deep passion for their craft, upholding high standards of quality in their chocolate production.

Is Swiss chocolate gluten-free?

Many Swiss chocolates are gluten-free, but it can depend on the specific brand and product. Pure chocolate, which is made from cocoa, sugar, and sometimes vanilla, is naturally gluten-free. However, additives like fillings, flavorings, or coatings might contain gluten. It’s always recommended to check the packaging for information about possible allergens or contact the manufacturer if you’re unsure.

How can I buy Swiss chocolate if I don’t live in Switzerland?

Many Swiss chocolate brands are sold internationally, so check your local or online gourmet food stores. You can also order directly from many of the chocolate company websites, which often offer international shipping. Be aware that shipping chocolate can be tricky in warm weather, as it may melt during transit. Check the shipping policies of the company you’re ordering from to see how they handle this.

Chocolate factory Switzerland - 10 Top Deals and Prices 2024

Swiss chocolate is famous all over the world. In Switzerland there are several chocolate factories that you can visit. These include well-known names such as Lindt, Camille Bloch, Maestrani and Cailler. In all factories with a visitor center you have the opportunity to taste chocolate and buy it at the end in the store at sometimes attractive prices.

  • 9 Swiss chocolate factories you will love

Certain things go hand in hand.

Laurel and Hardy. Timon and Pumbaa. Summer and ice cream.

The inseparable pair we are looking at in this case has nothing to do with overweight warthogs or clumsy comedians, but with the world-famous symbiosis "Switzerland and chocolate" .

It is no secret that we love the sweet temptation. After all, chocolate consumption by the Swiss ranks first in Europe. In 2019, Mr. and Mrs. Switzerland consumed a remarkable 10.4 kg of chocolate per person, while our neighbors in Germany came in second with 8.8 kg.

Whether this is a podium position to be proud of remains to be seen. The fact is, however, that Switzerland is famous for its chocolate. And this is not least because the chocolatiers at Lindt invented milk chocolate through a mishap in 1879.

As you can imagine, tons of chocolate is made in Switzerland every day. To the delight of all sweets lovers, there are several chocolate factories that open their doors to visitors. So if you want to catch a glimpse behind the scenes of one of Switzerland's most important flagships, you've come to the right place.

Chocolarium - the happiness factory of Munz and Minor (formerly Maestrani)

The person behind this famous chocolate brand is called Aquilino Maestrani. In 1852, this ambitious entrepreneur and tinkerer founded the company and thus left his mark on Swiss chocolate history. The Maestrani company also owns the Munz and Minor brands, which are indispensable in any supermarket in this country.

Today, about 3,500 tons of Maestrani products are produced annually, which corresponds to the weight of about 600 adult African elephants. Of these, 35% leave Switzerland as export goods, while the remaining 65% are sold in Switzerland.

Chocolate. Not elephants. 🙂

Maestrani's assortment includes such classics as the delicious "Munz-Prügeli" , the chemical and sticky Munz Banana - which evokes either positive or negative childhood memories in every Swiss - the Minor chocolate sticks often served with coffee, or the cute lucky bugs.

Maestrani doesn't just produce chocolate, however. Caramel bars, fruit jelly creations and marzipan mice are also in their territory.

  • What is the Chocolarium?

At the Chocolarium , everything revolves around the question of how happiness ends up in chocolate. After all, that's the burning question, isn't it?

An interactive trail takes you for about an hour through the history of Swiss chocolate and the house of Maestrani, past tasting opportunities in the form of chocolate fountains or cocoa nibs bowls, purely into the production world to a 100-meter-long chocolate machine and finally into the store, where you will find an abundance of Maestrani creations.

In the show confectionery, you'll have the chance to decorate your own chocolate bar and take it home as a souvenir. If your stomach still allows it after this culinary excursion, the Schoggi Café awaits you at the end with further offers.

  • Prices Chocolarium
  • Ticket Chocolarium

If, in addition to the chocolate factory, you are considering a visit to the Show Dairy in Stein , the Walter Zoo in Gossau or the Tree Top Trail in the Neckertal Valley, the Combi-Ticket with a price reduction in the Chocolarium is the perfect choice for you.

  • Where is the Chocolarium located?

The Chocolarium is located in Flawil in the canton of St. Gallen . By car, you can reach the chocolate factory via the A1 highway and the Oberbühren exit. To reach the Chocolarium by public transport, take the train to Flawil or Uzwil and change to the post bus to the "Maestrani" stop.

Lindt Home of Chocolate

Of all the Swiss chocolate brands, Lindt is the one most likely to be found in the farthest corners of the globe. There is hardly a supermarket that does not offer a Lindt product in some form. Not to mention the airports.

The name behind the world-famous Lindor balls and golden chocolate bunnies has its origins in the late 19th century. Initially known as Lindt & Sprüngli, production started in 1899 in Kilchberg on Lake Zurich.

Originally, chocolate was a rather bitter and inedible affair. But by the happy coincidence that the conching machine was not switched off one Friday afternoon at the Lindt company in 1875 and the bitter mass continued to be stirred without interruption until Monday, the sweet and creamy milk chocolate that continues to seduce us today was born.

Hurray for forgetfulness!

  • What is the Home of Chocolate?

The Home of Chocolate opened in the midst of the pandemic in September 2020. It's safe to say that it is a project of superlatives. In one of the world's largest chocolate fountains, a full 1,500 kg of chocolate circulate at a height of over nine meters, and at 500 m², the Lindt store in the Home of Chocolate is the largest of its kind.

A museum explains everything about the history of chocolate as well as the origin of its ingredients before moving on to the infamous tasting hall. In here, three chocolate fountains are available for boundless tasting opportunities. If there's one room you won't want to leave in a hurry, it's this one.

Or maybe it's the buffet that follows, where you can eat your fill of various types of Lindor balls?

Afterwards, you'll get a glimpse of Lindt's testing facility, where they're constantly working on new creations and treats. This is the second last step before you can redeem your entrance ticket for a surprise and the tour is over.

  • Prices Lindt Home of Chocolate
  • Where is the Home of Chocolate located?

Like the chocolate factory that opened in 1899, the Home of Chocolate is located in Kilchberg on the southern shore of Lake Zurich

We recommend that you use public transportation to get there, as the location is perfectly integrated into the transportation network of the Zurich region. There are regular buses and trains to and from Zurich main station

Chez Camille Bloch

In Switzerland, the names Ragusa and Torino are not primarily associated with southern cities, but with creamy chocolate.

Because of the melodious name, chocolatier Camille Bloch named his hazelnut chocolate creation in 1942 after the city of Ragusa, now Dubrovnik in Croatia. With Torino chocolate, a second delicacy was added in 1950, which still turns heads all over Switzerland today.

Chocolats Camille Bloch is a Swiss family business founded in Bern in 1929. Today, the company is run by the third generation and new creations are constantly coming onto the market.

With an annual production volume of 3,700 tons, Camille Bloch weighs about 15 adult elephants more than Maestrani. Comparatively little of this is exported. Only 20% ends up abroad.

We prefer to eat the rest ourselves.

  • What is Chez Camille Bloch?

The factory where the Ragusa and Torino treats are made cannot be visited directly. Instead, Camille Bloch has built a visitor center right next to the chocolate factory, where you can see the production process up close.

After a short trip through the history of Camille Bloch and Swiss chocolate after the First World War, the tour takes you past two chocolate fountains and two snack columns with nuts and cocoa beans. However, we recommend you keep a low profile in this area, as you'll regret it by the time you get to the demonstration areas at the latest.

In the next section of the visitor center, two chocolatiers will show you step by step how the Ragusa and Torino chocolate sticks are made. Of course, you can help yourself to whatever you like afterwards, and no one will tell you that your sugar level has been reached for the day.

Simply paradisiacal circumstances.

Finally, in the café and store, you have the opportunity to treat yourself to more sugar bombs or even create your own personalized Ragusa gift box. If you'd like to try your hand at chocolatiering yourself, there's an opportunity to do so in one of the ateliers.

  • Prices Chez Camille Bloch
  • Where is Chez Camille Bloch located?

Chez Camille Bloch is located in Courtelary, a village in the Bernese Jura. By car you can reach Courtelary in 20 min from Biel and La Chaux-de-Fonds or in 60 min from Bern and Fribourg. By train you can easily reach Courtelary via Biel or La Chaux-de-Fonds, followed by a five-minute walk

La Maison Cailler

Cailler is the oldest chocolate brand in Switzerland and originated in Vevey on Lake Geneva. Cailler has been shaping the Swiss chocolate landscape since 1819 and it's hard to imagine any supermarket without this name.

At the end of the 19th century, the new site in Gruyère - which you've probably heard of in connection with a certain Swiss cheese - was put into operation. For over 100 years, production of the endlessly varied Cailler range has taken place in this factory.

What you may not have known is that Cailler merged with Nestlé in 1929. Also part of this empire are common names like Frigor and Fémina.

  • What is la Maison Cailler?

La Maison Cailler is Cailler's visitor center, which was ceremoniously opened in 2010. In its lovingly decorated museum, you'll be guided through the history of Swiss chocolate - starting with the cocoa beans in the jungle and ending with the Swiss cows.

As a little forewarning, it must be said here that the first few minutes of the tour are somewhat reminiscent of a ghost train and it is not uncommon for children to start crying in the gloomy surroundings. In the early days of chocolate, the Aztecs were not always peaceful..

After this first part, however, things become cheerful again and, at the latest at the creatively designed nibbling stations, the initial mischief is water under the bridge. Before you reach the actual tasting hall with a generous selection of Cailler chocolates, you are guided past a machine that lets you follow the entire production line of a Cailler chocolate stick.

You can round off your visit with culinary delights and pick up a souvenir or two along the way in the café and store.

  • Prices la Maison Cailler

Admission to la Maison Cailler costs CHF 15 for adults. In various workshops you can try yourself as a chocolatier and take your own creation home

  • Where is la Maison Cailler located?

La Maison Cailler is located in Broc, a village in the canton of Fribourg near Lake Gruyère. By train you can reach the station Broc Fabrique via Fribourg and Bulle. If you arrive by car, the A12 freeway between Bern and Lausanne is the right way via the Bulle exit.

House of Läderach

Who doesn't know it...?

The delicious broken chocolate with nuts, cornflakes, caramel pieces, smarties, raisins, coconut chips and many other creative ingredients. Hardly any shop window is as attractive as that of a Läderach store. Be it at the airport, on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich or on Marktplatz in St. Gallen.

But pralines, chocolate-covered popcorn or the legendary "MiniMousses" are also part of this Swiss chocolatier's specialties.

The Glarus-based family business was founded in 1962 and has had an impressive career. Läderach is now represented all over the world with over 80 branches in 15 countries. And the trend is upwards. A highlight in Läderach's history was certainly the year 2018, when Elias Läderach won the title of "World Chocolate Master" at the Chocolate World Championship.

By the way, the masterpiece of the Chocolate Master can be seen in the House of Läderach. And yes, it is indeed made of chocolate, even if it looks more like a glass sculpture.

  • What is the House of Läderach?

Like the Lindt Home of Chocolate, the House of Läderach opened its doors in the fall of 2020. Pandemic or not.

Upon entering the visitor center, you are immediately greeted by the sweet smell of chocolate and handed a piece of chocolate and a porcelain spoon as a ticket. You can choose between various tours or take the tour on your own.

A favorite of many visitors, apart from the three-piece chocolate fountain of course, is the direct insight into the production. The last part of a guided tour leads into the production hall where the chocolate is made. However, it is not processed here. At Läderach, all creations are made by hand, which is why you can "only" observe the manufacturing process of the liquid chocolate here.

Speaking of liquid chocolate.

The House of Läderach has a chocolate fountain from which white, light brown and dark chocolate flows simultaneously. This is where your porcelain spoon from the entrance comes in handy and you get to test your way through the sweet streams to your heart's content.

  • Prices House of Läderach

At the House of Läderach, you have several options. A simple, self-guided tour of the chocolate museum costs CHF 5. The ticket is also a CHF 5 voucher for the chocolate store. Please note that this short tour does not give you an insight into the production. For the visit you can calculate about 30 min.

The guided tours cost between 40 CHF and 60 CHF.

  • Where is the House of Läderach located?

The House of Läderach is located in Bilten in the canton of Glarus. By train you travel from Zurich, Chur or St. Gallen to Ziegelbrücke and change there to the bus to Bilten. By car you reach your destination via the A3 between Zurich and Chur via the Bilten exit.

Aeschbach's ChocoWelt

In addition to all the big names in the Swiss chocolate landscape, there are some smaller, less familiar players that aren't any less noteworthy. One of these is undoubtedly the Aeschbach manufactory, a family business that was founded in Zug in 1972.

One product from the house of Aeschbach that is likely to be familiar to every Swiss is the Schokoladentaler. Also known as "Schoggitaler" . It is often sold by primary school students to raise money for a good cause.

Apart from the Schoggitaler, Aeschbach produces a variety of chocolates, chocolate bars, seasonal creations and other house specialties.

What is Aeschbach's ChocoWelt?

In Aeschbach's ChocoWelt, as the name suggests, you can immerse yourself in the world of chocolate. During the interactive tour, you will learn all about the history of chocolate and the production of Aeschbacher's house specialties

Of course, the journey of the cocoa bean with all its tasting possibilities is not to be missed. And the contact with the chocolatiers, who are happy to answer questions and hand out samples, is not neglected on the tour.

After the tour, you can stock up on the specialties of the Aeschbach Chocolatiers in the store and café.

Prices Aeschbach's ChocoWelt

Admission to Aeschbach's ChocoWelt costs CHF 15 for adults. As with Läderach, this price includes a voucher of 5.- CHF which can be redeemed in the café or in the store. For an additional CHF 10, you can decorate your own 200 g chocolate bar as part of ChocoWelt Plus and take it home as a souvenir.

Where is Aeschbach's ChocoWelt located?

In three different factory stores in Giubiasco, Bellinzona and Kreuzlingen you can try their specialties directly from production. In the production plant in Giubiasco it is even possible to take part in a guided tour. This includes a tour of the production facility and a tasting session.

Funky Chocolate Club

Watching the production of chocolate is one thing. But becoming active yourself and creating your own chocolate bar is something completely different. At the Funky Chocolate Club in Interlaken you have the opportunity to do just that.

  • What is the Funky Chocolate Club?

The Funky Chocolate Club has been around since November 2014, and since then chocolate lovers from all over the world have been meeting here to make their own chocolate under professional guidance. In a workshop, you'll be equipped with an apron, chef's hat, and all sorts of ingredients you'll need to decorate your chocolate bars.

During the workshop, a professional chocolatier will explain to you how to temper chocolate properly and what it takes to make a perfect bar of chocolate. Afterwards, you'll get to work and decorate your chocolate bars as you please. Of course, you can eat as much as you like. At the end of the workshop, you take your creation home with you and can show off everywhere what you've learned. However, the chocolate must first cool for at least an hour before you can take it home.

  • Funky Chocolate Club prices

The workshop at the Funky Chocolate Club costs CHF 69 for adults. Children between the ages of 4 and 14 pay CHF 59. Workshops are held four times a day in English and last approximately one hour.

  • Where is the Funky Chocolate Club located?

The Funky Chocolate Club is located in the heart of Interlaken at Postgasse 10. You can reach it on foot from the Interlaken West train station in about 5 minutes.

Swiss chocolate manufactories

Besides all the chocolate factories with visitor centers and guided tours, there are numerous smaller chocolate manufactories. Below we list some candites you can visit.

L'Espace Chocolat Confiserie Moret

In Lausanne and Yverdon-les-Bains you will find l'Espace Chocolat Confiserie Moret with up to 20 delicious and unique chocolate bars. But also chocolates, confections and other delicacies await you here. The products are completely made and decorated on site. And of course, there's plenty to snack on while you choose your favorite temptation

As the name suggests, Schoggi.ch has a rich online store. However, you can also visit their factory store directly on site in Kempttal. Here you can expect specialties made of chocolate for upscale specialty stores at home and abroad. The family business has been producing fresh products for more than 70 years and has a high quality due to its great experience

  • Garçoa Chocolate

During an exciting chocolate safari through the Garçoa chocolate factory in Zurich, you can discover the production process from cocoa bean to finished bar. You will learn exciting facts about cocoa and have the opportunity to snack in between. A safari takes about 60 to 90 minutes and costs CHF 20 for adults. Afterwards, you can stock up on your favorite chocolates in the store.

  • Max Chocolatier

In the heart of Lucerne, Max Chocolatier awaits its guests with various tastings. Here you will find chocolates, chocolate bars, dragées, tasting boxes and many other products in the store

For a guided tasting or a chocolate workshop, pre-registration is necessary. During 45 to 90 minutes you will experience the craft up close and enjoy the view of the Lucerne lake basin. A visit to Max Chocolatier is also perfect as a team event

  • Schoggihüsli Hinwil

Seasonal promotions and special offers await you at Schoggihüsli in Hinwil. The factory store is located right next to the HALBA production facility. You can take a look inside the factory in the video below. Otherwise, we recommend that you visit the store directly and benefit from the large selection of chocolate.

Video HALBA Chocolate Factory

Villars is another big name that you'll encounter more often in Swiss supermarkets. Their assortment is gigantic and also includes more special creations such as sugar-free chocolate. The Villars store is located in Fribourg. Here you will find the chocolate boutique with a large selection of products and a cozy café

  • Where is Toblerone?

You might be wondering why one of the biggest names in the chocolate landscape - which can easily hold a candle to Lindor balls in terms of fame - is missing from this list.

That's a fair question. In fact, it's not possible to get to know Toblerone better and visit a production facility. So you'll have to make do with the assortment in supermarkets and at almost every airport in the world.

However, this should not be a big deal, as you will be well prepared for the next rainy day or your next bout of chocolate cravings with the chocolate factories and manufactories described here. With your visit you will also help Switzerland to defend its podium position of the "Chocolate Monsters of Europe" . 🙂

Swiss Chocolate Factories, Tours, and Adventures

Switzerland is known for a lot of things. Cows, watches, banks, and mountains. Perhaps most famous of all is Switzerland’s world-class chocolate .

Some of the world’s best chocolate manufacturers come from Switzerland, and it is one of the top souvenirs travelers are dying to try when they visit. Swiss chocolate is great as a snack or paired with espresso. In fact, as a confessed chocoholic myself, I have to admit that chocolate is fit for almost any conceivable occasion.

So, if you are in Switzerland why settle for just munching on the best chocolates in town? Instead, why not take your Swiss chocolate experience beyond the plate and dive deep into a world you will never forget!

Cailler Chocolate Factory, Broc

If first-class train tickets are outside your budget, you can skip the scenic ride and head to the Cailler Chocolate Factory in Broc, or Maison Cailler directly. As with other tours, a trip here is a must for chocolate lovers with a behind-the-scenes look at the history and production of chocolates.

The tour starts as far back as Aztec cocoa ceremonies, at the time cocoa was discovered, and goes all the way to how chocolate is made today. The exhibits are interactive, so you get to touch and smell beans, watch chocolate production live, and taste different samples.

They also have Atelier du Chocolat where you can “play” with chocolate and create works of art yourself. The best part is, you can take your chocolates with you afterward.

Maison Cailler is undeniably popular, and peak seasons (July and August) can see waiting hours of up to 2 ½ hours. The whole tour lasts up to 1 ½ hour. Timetables and prices are available here .

Verkehrshaus Swiss Chocolate Adventure

Also known as the Swiss Museum of Transport, the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz in Lucerne is an interactive museum that opened in July 1959. With the use of multimedia, interactive displays show the history and development of all forms of transportation and communications in Switzerland.

It is Switzerland’s most popular museum and has many exhibits and themed facilities found nowhere else in the country.

One of the top attractions here is the Swiss Chocolate Adventure , developed in conjunction with the Lindt Chocolate Competence Foundation . It is a theme-world multimedia attraction that takes visitors on a journey of discovery through the origin, production, and transport of Swiss chocolates.

All senses are tickled during this journey, showing the process from the cultivation of the cocoa bean to the sale of the finished chocolate product. Visitors get to travel all over the world without leaving the museum and get a chocolate treat at the end as a bonus.

Tickets start at CHF 9 per person and can be bought online here .

Lindt Chocolate Factory Store, Zurich

Lindt Chocolate Shop – Courtesy of Alpha

Lindt used to offer factory tours but it is no longer possible.

Never fear though, because if you make the effort to come to the Lindt Factory in Kilchberg , just outside of Zurich you are in for a treat!

This Lindt shop has the largest Pick & Mix variety you will find anywhere, as well as a huge range of both new and exclusive products from Lindt. They also have the usual range of Lindt chocolates and pralinés, as well as a huge bargain section because it is a Factory Outlet.

So, if your aim is to go home with a huge bag of Lindt goodies, including some rare and cheap treats, this is the place to be. And it is only 15 minutes from the center of Zurich!

Läderach Chocolate Factory, Bilten

The Läderach chocolate adventure will take you through a journey that starts in the jungle and ends in the sampling of high-quality chocolates. The tour can be done with or without a guide.

The most anticipated part of the tour is the Culinary Path. Here, you can enjoy a sample of various Läderach specialties and see how they are handmade in the factory in Ennenda.

The Chocolate Train

One of the best ways to discover Switzerland is by train, passing through picturesque landscapes and vistas. And because chocolate is such an important part of Swiss culture, there is of course a train ride dedicated to this delicious temptation. The Chocolate Train is a first-class ride that runs between Montreux and the Cailler-Nestlé chocolate factory at Broc.

The train leaves Montreux at 8:57 a.m and runs on the Montreux-Oberland-Bernois Railway towards the medieval town of Gruyères , another town worth stopping at.

After an onboard serving of chocolates and croissants, passengers leave the train for a bus ride to Maison du Gruyère to sample another Swiss icon, the Gruyère cheese.

After sampling products and a quick trip to Chateau Gruyère , passengers head to Broc and enter the legendary Maison Cailler . Passengers discover the process of making Swiss chocolates and sample finished products. Something you probably can’t wait for!

If you have a Swiss Pass , it will get you discounted train tickets.

Timetables and ticket reservations are available online .

Alimentarium – Museum of Nutrition

A museum dedicated to food would not be complete without a section on chocolates, and the Alimentarium Museum of Nutrition makes good on that promise. It is located on the shores of Lake Geneva at Vevey. It has exhibitions and displays of everything and anything on food, nutrition, and the cultural history of eating.

The Alimentarium also occupies the building that used to be the 1920’s head office of Nestle, one of the biggest food brands born out of Switzerland, that is still based in the area.

Although there is a whole swathe of information on food here, never fear because there is also a lot of chocolate too. Visitors will learn about the discovery of chocolate and the many different ways to produce the product, its emotional significance, and the hundreds of items, equipment, utensils, and objects used to consume chocolate in every manner possible.

Individual tickets and guided tours are available online . They also offer workshops for children and adults.

In the village of Caslano in Ticino is the Alprose chocolate museum, Schokoland . A huge chocolate fountain welcomes visitors upon entering and takes them on a chocolate journey as only the Swiss can tell it. You can also watch how chocolates are produced (live), as well as experience sampling and tasting that turn this museum into a worthwhile interactive experience.

There is an elevated platform above the production line where visitors can also watch, step-by-step, how kilometers of chocolates go through their various stages of processing.

Schokoland is extremely easy to spot, with its bright red buildings and larger-than-life cow sculptures in the garden and on the roof. There is also a section in the museum that pays tribute to some of Switzerland’s most iconic chocolatiers, including Philippe Suchard, Jacques Foulquier, Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, and Henri Nestlé.

Choco Emotion

If you want to take your chocolate obsession event further, head to Grand Hotel Bad Ragaz for the Choco Emotion treatment. It’s a 90-minute experience at one of Switzerland’s best spas . Cocoa beans take center stage during this luxurious treatment, starting with a bubble bath, then a chocolate scrub and pack, followed by a full-body oil application.

If you’re visiting with kids, they also have a kid version of the chocolate experience called the Funny Choco.

Chocolate Flavours Tours Geneva (Local Flavours Tours)

Cailler chocolates

The Chocolate Flavours Tour is a three-hour guided tour of the Geneva center that include stops at seven chocolate destinations, a walking tour of the city’s most famous attractions, and even a quick boat ride on Lake Geneva. It’s recommended that tour-goers have a light savory meal before this adventure because it’s not the best idea to eat lots of chocolates on an empty stomach.

The tour is led by a knowledgeable local guide who will tell you about the history of the shops you visit, and anecdotes about the chocolates you get to taste. In fact, all the chocolates that are included in the tastings are hand-picked, and there’s a story behind each piece.

You’ll try the favorite Geneva chocolates of Grace Kelly, Winston Churchill, JFK, and other famous historic figures. The standard price for the tour is 99 CHF per participant, and anyone in possession of the Geneva City Pass can get a 20% discount!

Favarger Chocolate Factory Tour

Favarger Chocolate Factory

The Favarger chocolate factory was founded back in 1826 and it’s one of Geneva’s most special places for a chocolate tour. The factory organizes guided tours that allow visitors to witness the ins and outs of the chocolate manufacturing process, as well as private events that include tastings, chocolate makings, and more.

It’s worth noting that, at the time of writing this in June 2023, the guided tours of the Favarger Chocolate Factory are temporarily suspended. They are supposed to get reinstated later in the year. The factory still arranges private events that last for approximately half a day, and which include tastings and chocolate-making workshops. It’s 250 CHF per person to participate in these events.

Additionally, it’s possible to taste Farvager chocolates at any of their shops throughout the city of Geneva.

Geneva Chocolate Tour in a TukTuk

TukTuk tours have gotten increasingly popular throughout the years in all major cities in Switzerland, and Geneva is no exception. They’re great because they allow you to discover the city’s top sights at a much faster pace than walking tours, plus they usually include some sort of food that you can eat while you’re riding in the TukTuk.

In this case, you’ll get to eat Swiss chocolate from the three chocolatiers that are covered in the TukTuk tour. The expert chocolatiers will also tell you about the chocolates you’re about to taste, and you’re free to ask them any other questions you might have about this delicacy.

Eat award-winning chocolate while riding around this fabulous city and discovering all of its most famous attractions – what’s not to love about this tour? It is a little pricey at $200 per participant, but such a unique experience that it’s worth it if you can afford it.

Boutique Chocolate Store Tour in a Private TaxiBike

Skip the crowds in Geneva by choosing a tour of the city’s best chocolatiers in a private TaxiBike . It’s an excellent option for two people who want to discover Geneva’s most famous landmarks, but also get to experience a chocolate tasting or two at the city’s best chocolatiers.

Book this tour early to secure the timeslot that fits you best because it’s one of the most popular chocolate tours in Geneva. Your private guide will also talk you through the history of Swiss chocolate and its importance to the local culture and heritage.

The price for this tour is approximately 100 CHF per person, which is a fair price for a taxi tour. The chocolatiers you’ll visit during this tour are La Bonbonnière Chocolaterie, Chocolat Favarger, and Charlie Ganache, and you’ll get to taste hot chocolate, pralines, and Pavé de Genève.

Day Trip to Maison Cailler Chocolate Factory

Gruyeres Castle

The Maison Cailler chocolate factory is situated in the village of Broc, approximately 125 kilometers outside Geneva. It takes about 2 hours to travel to the factory by public transport and an hour and a half by car, so it is possible to organize this tour on your own and do it without guides.

The advantage of a guided tour is that you don’t have to worry about logistics at all; you just need to pay for the tour and show up at the agreed-upon meeting point. What’s even better is that all tours from Geneva include a visit to both the chocolate factory and the famous village of Gruyeres, so a lot of delicious cheese and chocolate is on the menu for the day.

You can see both the cheese-making and the chocolate-making process first hand, and taste the local delicacies. Chocolate tastings are more popular among younger tour-goers, but the trip to the cheese factory is often preferred by adults. You’ll also get some free time to walk around Gruyeres and explore it at your own pace, plus you’re transported in air-conditioned coaches to and from Geneva. The price for this tour is approximately 155 CHF per participant.

Gruyères Gold Tour with Train Ride & Tastings

Golden Pass Train

The Gruyeres Gold tour is possibly the most Swiss experience you can have in Geneva. It includes a ride on the panoramic Golden Express Train, a trip to the wonderful village of Gruyeres which is known for the namesake cheese and H.R. Giger, a trip to a chocolate and cheese factory, and panoramic views all around.

This is an all-day tour that takes 9.5 hours, mostly because of the long ride from Geneva to Gruyeres. The price is 230 Euros per participant, and it’s necessary to book it a few days in advance because it’s a very popular tour and the tickets sell out quickly. Online ticket purchase is recommended, and if you cancel the tickets a day before the tour, you will get a full refund.

This culinary adventure includes a tasting of the iconic Swiss fondue and delicious chocolates, plus you’ll get some free time in Gruyeres if you want to go for lunch, visit the museums, or just explore the medieval village.

A Look at The 3 Best Swiss Chocolate Factory Tours

swiss mountians and valley

When people think of Switzerland, there are usually two things that come to mind: timepieces and chocolate. In this post we’ll be discussing the latter with examples. Numerous chocolate factories dot the Swiss landscape, and some even offer tours to curious consumers.

While it’s not possible to tour the factory where the original Toblerone chocolate bar is made, there are plenty of other facilities worth exploring if you happen to be a candy connoisseur. Let’s go over three of the best chocolate factory tours in Switzerland, as well as what they include for members of the public.

The Maestrani’s Chocolarium

The Maestrani’s Chocolarium factory in Flawil offers tours with audio guides. Maestrani’s has been in business since 1900 and today is still using traditional methods when producing their chocolates.

The tour starts with a quick video that talks about how they made chocolate in their earlier years, and what it takes to make their chocolates today. Visitors are then led into a big room with pictures explaining the step-by-step process. Next is a room with a long display case filled with chocolate samples, each one with an information card explaining how that particular candy is made. Then visitors are led into a gift shop where they can purchase plain chocolate bars to be used in the next area.

The tour ends with a visit into the heart of the factory where visitors can see the production of chocolate in person. They also meet the talented chocolatiers who work the factory floor, who offer to decorate their plain chocolate bars in any way they please..

The tour guides are very knowledgeable and provide guests with samples at each level of production, while also providing recipes for cooking with chocolate for their sampling experience. The tour is very interesting and makes it very clear that the Maestrani company takes great pride in their business.

The Frey Chocolate Factory

The Frey Chocolate Factory Tour in Buchs begins with a short slide show presentation at the factory’s chocolate museum where you learn about the history of chocolate making, how cocoa beans are grown around the world, and how they make their final product. The presentation also includes a walkthrough among the machines they use throughout the process. The museum is like a giant storehouse where the history and machinery are part of what’s on display.

After the factory museum visit, visitors can enjoy a tasting session where they can sample multiple truffles, and taste different flavors of chocolate — including Frey’s original dark chocolate which has been around since the early 1900’s and Neuhaus milk chocolate, a best-seller. Visitors also learn about how each chocolate is made, along with some fun trivia and facts.

After the tour and tasting, visitors enter a room filled with row upon row of M&M candies, bags of chocolate bars and cases full of truffles all waiting to be purchased as souvenirs. Tours can run from one to two hours and only cost around $25 per person.

Maison Cailler

Maison Cailler was founded in 1825 when Jean-Charles Cailler started his own chocolatier business near Vevey. Today, there are still two family members at the top of this famous company. This factory tour stands out from the rest since it allows people to learn about a family business that has been passed down for generations.

Visitors are taken on a tour of the factory, with the help of an audio guide in their headsets. The audio guide is very informative. It explains the process of how cacao plants are grown and how chocolate is made from cocoa beans, before being turned into various products. Many of the displays along the tour are digital and interactive. Visitors are given samples of different Cailler chocolates at various stages in the production process, as well as recipes for cooking with chocolate.

Visitors to Maison Cailler include people of all ages, with the majority being students on school trips or groups visiting from around the world. Their tour experience is arguably the best-attended on our list, and has been ranked by Trip Advisor and Condé Nast Traveler magazines as one of the top ten in Switzerland.

Now, if it's only one chocolate factory you want to visit which one would it be?

best chocolate factory tour in switzerland

Hi Adhiraj_19,

For me, the "best" one would be a nearby one. I wouldn't want to spend three or four hours travelling to see some factory, chocolate or not! So, if you let us know where you'll be, we can help you find the nearest one.

You may also want to know that it may be more fun to visit several local chocolate-artisan shops rather than a chocolate factory. Many towns and cities have small chocolate makers that create chocolate masterpieces, and you can visit the shop and buy some wonderful samples.

Have fun as you plan!

Hi Adhiraj_19

Choclate gets produced in closed systems (hygiene). At the visitor paltforms (where ever you go) you will find explanations and you will see how choclate gets packed.

There actually aren't too many. Chocolate factories to choose from. The Maison Cailler at Broc is excellent. Tours are fully automated and Offered in several languages. The tasting that follows is great.

Otherwise there are artisanal chocolate shops in all the major towns. Basel also has a branch of Sprungli, the Zurich confiserie. If you go to a few of these and buy 100g at each you can arrange your own tasting.

For casperjj,

http://www.xocolatl-basel.ch/

Click on "Laden" to see the store.

Thank you! We'll check out Sprungli and xocolati.
