African Cruise Itineraries

Many cruise itineraries begin their journey in South Africa, but from there, with 54 varied countries to explore, you have the choice of which direction to take. By cruising around Africa, travel to your destination is a pleasure. Return to the comfort on board and relax at the end of an eventful day, before waking up the next morning to discover what new extraordinary experience awaits you.

Enjoy a longer holiday! With greater distances to cover, cruises around Africa often exceed the standard week. Allow 10 and 14 for your African cruise and enjoy a more relaxed time, giving yourself the opportunity to see more of its amazing sights.

Top Africa Cruise Harbours

Situated at nearly the southernmost tip of Africa is the Port of Cape Town. With the presence of Table Mountain looming in the background and the vast expanses of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans merging into the deepest blue, Cape Town provides a dramatic stage to begin your voyage. Take a moment to wander along the waterfront, lively with trade, and admire the impressive warships, such as HMS Iron Duke.

Cape Town has something for everyone: impressive hiking routes, a cool urban, creative culture and gourmet restaurants and wineries.

Don’t miss an aerial cable ride up to the top of Table Mountain. With its 360-degree rotating floor, the views are simply breath-taking.

--> Cape Town cruises

Did you know…?

Cape Town is the host to Africa’s only species of penguin. The African Penguin, also known as the Jackass Penguin and Black-footed Penguin, has grown from just two breeding pairs to thousands of inhabitants on the southernmost tip of Africa.

Situated on the east coast, Durban is the busiest port in Africa. It’s gorgeous Golden Mile, which actually consists of 6km of beach, draws a line between the city and the Indian Ocean and provides a perfect opportunity for surfing, swimming and fishing. Its promenade is lined with shops, restaurants and entertainment complexes, and here, you can also find uShaka Marine World. This 16-hectare theme park features the largest aquarium in the southern hemisphere and offers the opportunity to get up close to some wild and fascinating sea animals.

Durban is a cosmopolitan city and its complex history has led to a rich ethnic diversity. Immerse yourself in this multiculturalism by visiting the Zulu and Indian markets, full of aroma of exotic spices.

--> Durban cruises

The world’s tallest bungee swing is found at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban.

A small, historic Namibian town, Walvis Bay is the gateway to some outstanding natural attractions. Many take an excursion into Africa’s oldest desert; the Namib Desert. With the highest sand dunes in the world, its surreal beauty is captivating.

Close by to Walvis Bay is Dune 7, the tallest in the coastal area. This sand dune is one you can hike up and the views from the top make the effort more than worthwhile.

Flocks of flamingos and pelicans feed at the 45,000-hectare lagoon on the outskirts of town, providing a colourful, photo opportunity for your African cruise album. --> Walvis Bay cruises

Walvis Bay, is called Walfischbucht in German, which translates to ‘Whale Bay’, also its previous name in English, and is in reference to its whaling history.

When is the best time for Africa cruises?

Due to its vast landmass stretching across the equator, climates across Africa can vary; from the subtropical desert temperatures of Namibia to the temperate, regions of South Africa.

It is best to plan the timing of your visit by prioritising what you want to see and where.

For example, if you are interested in safari, the best times for viewing varies between Southern and Eastern Africa and even the type of game you are hoping to see. In general, the drier seasons provide a better opportunity for viewing; between May and October in the south and January to March in the east. However, if you are hoping to catch the infamous and spectacular, Serengeti wildebeest migration in Tanzania, this occurs between November and August.

If you are seeking relaxation on some of Africa’s beautiful beaches, South Africa enjoys its warm summer months between December and March. Although, many resorts further north, such as Mauritius and the Seychelles, are considered year-round destinations, it is still worth double-checking for rainy seasons, risk of cyclones and extreme heat and humidity.

Prepare for big swings in temperature, especially when exploring the desert. Day times can be scotching hot, but then at night, temperatures fall dramatically and it can become very cold.

Top Sights in Africa

Wildlife safaris.

The top of many people’s lists when planning a cruise around Africa is going on a wildlife safari. Describing it as an unforgettable experience simply does not do it justice, as it is truly epic. From South Africa to Kenya and Tanzania or across to Namibia, the opportunity to see lions, giraffes, elephants or gorillas in their natural habitat cannot be missed.

Victoria Falls

Although taking a trip to Victoria Falls may involve venturing a little further from your cruise, if you have the opportunity to visit this stunning natural wonder, do not hesitate to go. Known as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ - ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ by the local Kololo tribe, it is also aptly described in modern terms as ‘the greatest curtain of falling water in the world’. The beauty and ferociousness of nature it displays is breath-taking.

Robben Island

There are significant moments in African history that have captured the world and the release of Nelson Mandela, after 18 years’ incarceration, is one of them. Visit Robben Island and gain an insight in the oppression of the apartheid regime and its impact on Africa culture.

Africa is quite a religious area, with Christianity and Islam widely practised, therefore it is respectful to dress conservatively.

Regional African Dishes

Bobotie is South Africa’s national dish and consists of a mixture of curried meat, often spiced mince, and fruit, topped with a creamy, egg-based sauce, similar to that of Moussaka.

With a large Indian influence in South Africa, particularly in Durban, which has the highest population of Indians outside of the country, their spicy cuisine is prevalent. In Durban, ‘Bunny Chow’, a mutton or bean curry served in a hollowed-out bread loaf, is a local city favourite.

Nshima is a carbohydrate side, made of cornmeal and although a common staple in Central Africa, it is mostly unheard of outside of the continent. It shares similarities with ugali or posho of East Africa and sadza of Zimbabwe. These staples are eaten frequently for lunch and dinner and like most carbohydrate dishes, are quite bland, so absorb other flavours readily.

Fruit is one of the most consumed foods in Africa, with watermelon being the clear favourite; delicious on a hot day!

Fascinating Facts about Africa

There are well over one thousand languages spoken in Africa, some estimates suggest closer to two thousand. English is an official language in many countries and is widely spoken, nonetheless learning a few local phrases will be welcomed.

Africa is home to some of nature’s largest and longest: the longest river (the Nile at 4,132 miles), the largest waterfall (Victoria Falls at 355 feet high and one mile wide) and the largest desert (the Sahara at an area of 9,200,000 square kilometres, comparable to the size of China or the United States!) and that’s before we even address the stats of its magnificent animals!

Over half the gold ever mined on the Earth was sourced from Witwatersrand, South Africa. The Witwatersrand Gold Rush in the 1800s led to extensive social and political implications. Gold mining in South Africa continues today and led to their currency gaining the name of ‘Rand’ in 1961.

Top Africa Tip For Your Africa Cruise

Take time to carefully plan your cruise around Africa to ensure you maximise your time on holiday. As well as considering the climate and what you would like to see and where, consider also visa requirements, travel vaccinations and any specialised equipment needed, i.e. binoculars, hiking boots or portable mosquito nets.

MSC at Durban Harbour

28 July 2014. "This was our first trip by boat and the excitement was unparralleled to anything we had ever taken on. We live in Kimberley NC and took the overnight bus to Dbn from Bloem. We arrived in Dbn and went for breakfast at The Workshop then we caught a taxi to the harbour. We were too early to check in but after a short wait were allowed to board and set off for the buffet lunch. Food of all kinds is wonderful for us. My self, husband and 2 teenage daughters. We loved the on board welcoming, the photos and the sheer adventure of finding our cabin every time we returned to it. Our daughters went off on their own to swim, or gym or explore as they felt totally safe. As mentioned we ate plenty and tried new things including some of the exotic cocktails. We attended the evening shows with line dancing and the disco. Coming into Cape Town we had bad weather and I was very ill, and 2 days after leaving the boat my daughter and I still had sea legs, but the experience was so great we are saving now for a trip to the Portuguese Island for early next year. Keep up the great work, crew, entertainers and management staff." LeeAnne Waddell shares her experience on the MSC Melody in 2012.

MSC Rhapsody

12 May 2014. Rating 5/5. "I make memories by marvelling the pristine creations of God's Noble Gifts to Mankind through HIS splendours! Imprinted in my mind as one of my most memory making investments is twenty years ago. At this time, I was 42 & my husband was 44. We saved up & SPLASHED out on a celebrative Cruise on The Rhapsody from Durban to CT! We were celebrating my 22year old  daughters degree graduation joined by my two teenage sons! THE HIGHLiGHT of that cruise experience for me was the speedy rubber duck ride from the Rhapsody on to the Plettenberg Shores! An absolute heaven on earth magical, meditative remembrance! The silky smooth white pearly sands brought my breath to a standstill as I stroll in spiritual awe of HIS magnificence! My daughter had the opportunity of attempting her first scuba dive experience at Pearly PLETT! Once more, we were enthralled with the precious gemstones that PLETT inherited from Natures treasure chest!" Zarina Mia

Cruising to Cape Town in the morning on the MSC Sinfonia

MSC Sinfonia

Published on 5 August 2013 : We had enough savings in 2011 to take the family of four (that's me, the wife and two sons) on the Sinfonia from Durban to Cape Town . Our holidays until then, mainly consisted of campsites or self-catering establishments. We all live in Cape Town and would fly up to Durban a day earlier and overnight there just to ensure that we do not miss the boat with unforeseen delays or other circumstances. I love travelling and actually get an energy load in meeting people and just enjoying the opportunity to relax and be served, pampered and spoiled to pieces. That's why you will not find me at the self-help restaurants on a cruiser, but rather in the lovely decorated and architecturally stimulating dining rooms. I kept the trip as a surprise to the family who were under the impression that we will be holidaying at a self-catering beach apartment for a few days in Durban and then return back home by plane. I was born in Kwazulu/Natal (Port Shepstone) and had not been back in this province since my parents moved to Cape Town in 1959. Our eldest son Rikus, a Bsc. student at University of Stellenbosch at the time, was unexpectedly and unfortunately scheduled for a re-examination within this already paid for excursion. The younger son, Herko immediately grabbed the opportunity to invite his girlfriend Erika as a replacement. They have since become engaged (shortly after the Sinfonia experience)…not sure if the Sinfonia had any influence on this decision? By now I had to disclose the well-kept secret to Sandra, (my wife), as I had only booked a single 4-bed-outside-cabin for the original group. Although we have known Erika for quite some time, the wife and I were not sure whether Erika would be willing or even be comfortable in sharing a cabin with her possible-future-parent-in-laws? We soon learned that Erika had the same enthusiasm and eagerness for travelling and that nothing was going to prevent her from participating on this trip. Her parents were quite happy to leave Erika (and Herko) under our discreet supervision. This was a first time sea-travelling experience for all of us and the excitement was overwhelming. The fortunate part now was that we had someone at home taking care of the doggies (two dachshunds) and generally taking care of the property and answering the landline business phone so that no potential business opportunity could be lost….my architectural design studio is home based. The moment we left, I had switched off my cellular phone, as nothing, but nothing was going to disrupt this long anticipated holiday. As I have already mentioned, just travelling itself is a great stimulating experience and energy absorbing affair for me and air travel has always been a special favourite. I have flown a few times (for business), but I probably still look like one of those nervous first time flyers whenever I board an aircraft and that is not because I am nervous or anxious, it is pure euphoria. This occasional contingency is always regarded as a privileged windfall when I get to do projects in the other provinces. The Kwazula/Natal landscape from the air was surprisingly beautiful. I was silently hoping that the control tower would request our flight commander to do a go-around due to air traffic congestion. Although CT has been awarded the best looking airport (and I am very proud of that, being a passionate Capetonian and staunch Stormers supporter), I would certainly qualify King Shaka International Airport as a very close competitor, in ambience and architecturally. Going through the custom and boarding process at Durban harbour, was a little like being scrutinized and registering as a rookie for army duties. The wife and I were concerned that they might ask us to undress as neither of us, do not look that good anymore in our underwear. When a custom official very kindly but firmly requested that the "would-be- passengers" must not consider or even think about taking any hidden alcoholic beverages on board the ship…I actually experienced the same thoughts when I reported for army duties at the Cape Town Castle, 35 years ago with the naïve thought of "why would anyone want to bring their own alcoholic drinks?", surely this modern day cruiser have its own bars, wet bars, beverage bars and lounges. Would-be passengers were also advised to rather consider taking a rain cheque if they felt sneezie in any way. I was relieved that I took the time to take every one for immune booster inoculations at our family practitioner beforehand and coercing all in taking vitamin C supplements in almost overdose quantities. I could hardly sleep the first night, struggling to absorb the realities of the day's events and feeling the motion of this huge structure ploughing through the deep ocean waters with our professional seamen at the helm. The occasional shivering and very smooth rolling of this gigantic hauling carriage was absolutely exhilarating! We surprisingly bumped into acquaintances and friends (also from CT) during the trip which was great, but we also soon realized that you could meet some very interesting person or couple today and maybe never see them again due to the enormity of this luxury moving hotel. Our favourite lounge before dinners was the Manhattan Bar on the Beethoven deck where the music themes were absolutely head on of our cherished musical preferences (which are 70's rock). The artists were all exceptionally talented and entertaining. We were not sure where the other two "love birds" (Herko & Erika) found themselves most of the time, although we did bump into them at the pool bar and as a single rule of the day, asked them to join us for breakfast every morning. Since they are planning to get married this year in December 2013, I told Herko that he really has to be very creative for his honeymoon planning now as it would be very difficult to beat the Sinfonia experience. We arrived as scheduled 3 days later in beautiful Cape Town and although I have been a Capetonian for 53 years, I have never seen or experienced the aura of the mother city and Table Mountain as I did that very specific morning. It was a perfectly windless morning and as the city was in an awakening phase at the break of daylight, the tranquillity and totally wave-less sea surface, except for the small waves that the Sinfonia was pushing towards the harbour entrance, was an all indulgent moment of this incredible life time phenomenon. I felt so privileged to be an inhabitant of this amazingly beautiful city. Shortly after Sandra publicised our trip particulars on Facebook for our family and friends, a local church asked us if they could use this special photograph as a cover page for their webpage.

We felt honoured and realized that we have been truly blessed in many ways. The trip was an unforgettable adventure. We thank all staff and management of MSC for a very pleasant, entertaining, fun and wonderful experience. Eric & Sandra Lategan

What is a cruise to nowhere?

A cruise to nowhere is a trip on a ship where you go out at sea (nowhere) for a couple of nights. You can relax and enjoy the ship without having to worry about where you're going. MSC Cruises offers two unique options for cruises to nowhere in South Africa.

Departing from Durban or Cape Town, these round-trip journeys take passengers on a voyage without having to worry about where they're going or passport requirements - an ID card is all you need!

Why do a 2 nights cruise to nowhere?

Nowhere cruises are the perfect weekend getaway experience for first-time cruisers. This quick escape is the ideal opportunity to experience life on board or get to know the cruise lines. Even though the cruise ship is not heading to a specific destination, there are still plenty of daily activities to do onboard, including watching live music on the deck or in the various lounges, enjoying the sun and water activities on deck, or spending quality time with your family at the restaurants.

Cruises to nowhere are also ideal if you do not have all your travelling documents in order. The cruise ship will only sail in local waters and you will not disembark at any port in a different country. Therefore, you do not need a passport to embark on all cruise ships with a cruise-to-nowhere itinerary. This also allows you to book your cruise without much planning beforehand.

There is no better place to celebrate any special occasion than on a cruise ship. Whether you are planning milestone birthdays, bachelor parties, or weddings your cruise line will help you plan a glamorous event. The crew onboard promises that you experience your perfect fun-filled break while enjoying your own personal occasions.

And who knows - maybe you'll even find yourself sipping cocktails while watching the sunset over the open sea!

All kinds of weather can be expected on a cruise to nowhere - it just depends on when you go.

However, no matter when you go, the ship will definitely have all kinds of weather covered so don't worry! You'll be able to enjoy your cruise to nowhere regardless of what the weather is like outside.

While there are a variety of different cruise durations out there, cruises to nowhere are typically only two nights long. This is because they depart from and return to the same port, so there's not as much need for a longer voyage. Plus, it's the perfect amount of time to get a little relaxation and luxury without having to commit to a week-long trip.

If you're looking for a quick and easy escape, consider booking a cruise to nowhere from South Africa – you won't regret it!

Durban cruise port

Region Africa - Indian Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-05-14 05:48

Port Durban cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Durban, South Africa. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Durban is South Africa's largest and busiest seaport, while by population (around 0,6 million, metro around 3,5 million) the city is ranked the country's second-largest - after the capital Johannesburg (~0,96M) and followed by Cape Town (~0,45M). The cruise port is located on Natal Bay (Indian Ocean).

Cruise shipping companies often homeport in Durban large liners due to the city's great climate and amazing beaches. Durban is also often visited as call port on World Cruises or on ship relocation itineraries around Africa (Asia-Europe crossings omitting Suez Canal ).

Port Durban

Port Durban (aka Durban Harbour/locode ZADUR) is Africa's 2nd largest cargo shipping terminal ( Port Said, Egypt ), with annual capacity 31,4 million cargo tons.

The container port is ranked 4th largest in the Southern Hemisphere (after Jakarta Indonesia, Surabaya Indonesia, and Santos Brazil), with annual capacity 4,5+ million TEU-containers (statistical data 2019).

The Port's entrance channel (from Chart Datum) has max depth 13 m/42 ft and width (between the caissons) 122 m/400 ft. The Port's approach channel / harbor entrance depth is 19 m/62 ft, which decreases to 16 m/53 ft within Durban Harbour.

The cargo port generates over 60% of South Africa's revenue. Its infrastructure features 302 km (188 mi) of rail tracks and a total of 58 ship berths (managed by over 20 terminal operators). Annually, the seaport handles over 4500 commercial vessels. The main cargo berths are named Pier 1, Pier 2, Cross, Bluff, Bayhead, Maydon Wharf, Point and T-Jetty, and Island View.

Durban Car Terminal (1998-inaugurated) has annual capacity of 60,000 vehicles. In 2004, the terminal was expanded with a 380 m / 1247 ft long bridge connecting it with the quayside.

Each year, MSC Cruises homeports at least one ship in Durban during winter (November through April). For its Southern African winter season 2018-2019, MSC increased its passenger capacity and homeported in Durban the liners MSC Musica and MSC Sinfonia .

The Port is also visited by smaller-sized luxury ships and superyachts, as well as by larger liners on World Cruise itineraries (like Cunard 's RMS Queen Mary 2 ).

Part of Port Durban (on Salisbury Island) is the Naval Base Durban. Its facilities were renovated and expanded in 2012. Here are homeported all South African Navy's offshore patrol vessels.

In 2012, the state-owned freight logistics company Transnet purchased for ZAR 1,8 billion (~USD 150 million) the old International Airport site located in KwaZulu-Natal. In April 2012, the company announced its plans for a dig-out port development project on the property. Phase 1 (completed in 2019) required an initial investment of ZAR 5 billion (~USD 400M) with the project's balance scheduled for completion by 2037. Transnet's phased development plans include the construction of 16 container ship berths, plus 5 automotive (RoRo ship) berths and 4 liquid-bulk cargo ship berths. The container terminals have total annual capacity 9,6 million TEUs.

Port Durban is operated/managed by TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority). This is Africa's largest port authority company that manages 7 large seaports in South Africa - Durban, Cape Town , Richards Bay , East London , Mossel Bay , Port Elizabeth , and Saldanha .

In April 2021 was announced a US$7 billion plan for Port Durban's expansion and modernization. When completed (by the year 2031), the Port's annual cargo capacity is expected to reach 11+ million TEUs.

Durban cruise terminal

Currently, cruise ship passengers disembark at one of the Port's three cruise terminals - Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal (2023-opened), KwaZulu Cruise Terminal (2021-opened) or at the City Terminal (partially covered warehouse/operated by MSC ).

Durban's cruise terminals serve cruise vessels mainly during winter (between November and May).

The downtown is within 10 minutes walking distance from the cruise port.

Due to safety reasons is better to use taxis (available at the Port). King Shaka Airport (at La Mercy) is approx 30 km (19 mi) from the Port (direction north).

(NEWEST) Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal

The cruise port's newest terminal - Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal - was officially inaugurated on November 22, 2023. The ceremony was attended by Cyril Ramaphosa (1952-born, South Africa's 5th President, elected in 2018), Misuzulu Sinqobile kaZwelithini (1974-born, since 2021 the King of the Zulu nation), government officials/ministers, top executives from MSC Cruises (Pierfrancesco Vago/Executive Chairman, and Ross Volk/MSC Cruises South Africa's Managing Director), Nelson Mandela Foundation, major travel agencies and media representatives.

Investments into the new terminal (US$15.8 million) were made MSC Cruises via partnership deals with Africa Armada Consortium and Transnet National Ports Authority. Following the initial investment (US$15.8 million), for further expansion, in 2023 was additionally invested ZAR 1.6 million.

The terminal has two berths and capacity to accommodate two of the world's largest cruise vessels simultaneously.

The Nelson Mandela Terminal is sized 6000 m2 (64600 ft2) and has daily passenger capacity 4000. The facility is operated/managed by the company KwaZulu Cruise Terminal Ltd.

The project was announced in June 2017.

Via an exclusive partnership with MSC, the Nelson Mandela Terminal was designed and built by Transnet (1990-founded South African state business enterprise/aka SATS-South African Transport Services). Transnet is also the operator of the cruise terminal.

For this modern facility were used mostly materials sourced in South Africa (70%) and the design and construction teams were all South African (architects, engineers, construction company/workers).

(NEW) Durban Cruise Terminal KwaZulu-Natal

Port's development plan included the construction of a new (dedicated) cruise terminal at A-Berth (adjacent to Point Waterfront). In 2017, the private company "KwaZulu Cruise Terminal" (KCT) was announced as the preferred bidder for the 25-year concession project (until 2045). The tender for building a dedicated Durban Cruise Terminal was awarded to the private company KwaZulu Cruise Terminal Ltd - joint venture between MSC Cruises (70%) and Africa Armada Consortium (30%). The terminal has berthing capacity of 2 vessels docking simultaneously.

In April 2018, the project was officially started with TNPA signing an agreement with KCT Ltd for building the new, year-round passenger terminal. The facility was scheduled for completion in October 2020 and to be operational by January 2021. After the design phase (April thru December 2018) followed an 18-month construction phase (January 2019 thru July 2020).

On November 16, 2019, was held the ground-breaking ceremony with which MSC Group officially started the KCT Terminal's construction works. MSC also invested in a local development project by opening the Shosholoza Ocean Academy (in Durban) via partnership with South Africa's Department of Trade and Industry. The academy provides 3-month training courses for free. South Africans who successfully complete the course become eligible for MSC cruise ship employment.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Kwazulu Cruise Terminal was eventually rescheduled for inauguration on December 6, 2021, when started MSC Orchestra 's homeporting for 2021-2022 winter season.

Note: The new passenger terminal KCT is not exclusive to MSC ships only.

Ushaka Marine World: one of the largest aquariums in the world. It is located on the south beach of Durban. It is great place for fun and education. There is a shipwreck-themed aquarium, the largest dolphin stadium in Africa (with 1200 seats), penguin rookery, touch pool and snorkel reef.

The Botanic Gardens of Durban: this is the longest surviving garden in Africa and the oldest public institution in Durban. The attraction is visited by 0,5+ million people annually. The visitors can see typical plants and arboretum with mixed trees from America, Asia and Africa.

The Natural Science Museum of Durban: the museum is one of the most visited ones in Africa. The Durban Natural Science Museum displays the heritage of the area and in the world in general. The visitors can see a dinosaur in its real size and educate at the interactive KwaZulu-Natal Science Centre.

Beaches: the amazing beaches of Durban are popular with the name ”Durban’s Golden Mile.” They are beautiful, clean with golden sands and endless sun. The area offers facilities including fast food, changing rooms, lifeguards and shark nets.

At Victoria Indian Street Market tourists can discover the atmosphere of the Indians with temples, mosques, traditional food, shops.

Umgeni River Bird Park: the park is home to 3000+ types of exotic birds. You will also see four amazing waterfalls.
