If you want to guarantee that your gear stays dry, consider a truly waterproof duffel bag. Made from materials like nylon or polyester and often certified as submergible and dustproof, waterproof duffels are ideal if you’re going on a boat trip or backpacking adventure where you expect to get wet. These bags come in various capacities and carrying styles, including backpack, hand and shoulder straps.

Certainly, not everyone needs a waterproof duffel — a water-resistant duffel bag might be sufficient for those looking for a versatile carry-on or weekender bag, and they’re often cheaper. But for those water-loving adventurers who want full waterproofing, scroll down for our ten favorites from brands like Yeti, Patagonia, Osprey, and Rains.

Best Overall

Yeti waterproof duffel.

Toss this bag around or use it as a raft — this duffel can handle anything.

Its sturdiness means it might be tough to store, and it’s heavy.

Known for its tough water bottles , Yeti is also a leader when it comes to impenetrable waterproof duffel bags. The Panga has a puncture- and abrasion-proof nylon shell, which is IPX7 waterproof, meaning it can be fully submerged in water three feet deep for up to 30 minutes. The zipper is rugged and locks tightly into an innovative U-lock seal, making it leakproof. 

The straps of this bag are just plain solid. Two thick straps attached by a strong metal carabiner can turn the duffel into a backpack, and there are handles on either side as well as an over-shoulder strap. Inside, a tightening strap holds your gear when it’s full so you have an easier time zipping it closed, and there’s an easily-accessible mesh pocket. But the magic ingredient in this duffel is its EVA molded base, which helps it stay put when you’re stuffing it.

Best With Wheels

Ortlieb duffel rs.

The frame of this bag, along with its smooth-rolling wheels and reliably waterproof shell, is perfect for trips of all types.

You’ll be lugging around a lot of weight with this heavy bag.

Ortlieb’s bags aren’t cheap, but they’re extremely well-made and some of the only fully waterproof rolling duffels on the market. The Duffel RS connects the rigid aluminum floor plate and 100-millimeter wheels in an air-tight fashion, so water won’t get in. And the plate itself is one of the toughest we’ve seen, clearly capable of handling airport thrashing and any adventures you take it on. 

This bag includes arm straps to become a backpack, and there’s also a velcro handle if you want to pick it up that way. There is no shoulder strap, though.

This duffel is available in 85L, 110L and a massive 140L. If you’re looking for something smaller, the Duffel RG is just as solid and comes in 34L, 60L and 85L sizes.

Most Versatile

Ekster grid duffel backpack.

This duffel can function as a weekender bag, backpack, or carry-on, and it’s gorgeous.

There are waterproof elements to this bag, but it’s not 100 percent watertight.

Ekster, the brand responsible for the nifty pop-up wallet has created a similarly clever duffel backpack that’s more than meets the eye. Unzip the duffel to find various compartments to organize your stuff: there’s a padded 13-inch laptop sleeve as well as spots for your camera, clothes, shoes, and more. Outside, the pack has hideable backpack straps, a quick-access laptop pocket and pull-out straps for gear like a tripod and a wet towel (an underrated feature that more bags should have in this writer’s opinion). Its versatility makes this duffel an ideal weekender bag, and a great option for minimalist travelers like digital nomads, as its dimensions will work as a carry-on in the US, UK, and EU.

One drawback is that this bag isn’t fully waterproof. Ekster can confidently say its zippers and RFID-blocking outer pocket (possibly for a tracker card ) are waterproof, but the bag as a whole is only rated as water-resistant.

Best Lightweight

Patagonia guidewater duffel.

This bag is just over 2 pounds — plus, it uses recycled materials and is backed by Patagonia’s reputation for reliability.

This duffel is only available in one size.

It’s tough to leave Patagonia off any outdoor gear list and the category of waterproof duffels is no different. Like the Yeti Panga, this pack has an anti-dust and anti-water IPX7 rating, meaning it can be submerged in up to a meter of water for half an hour. Removable straps convert it into a backpack, and there are handles on either end. There are also a few nifty straps and loops on the outside for attaching it to a vehicle. (However, there’s no over-shoulder strap.)

Unlike the Yeti, the Guidewater doesn’t have a sturdy base, but that helps it cut down on weight — at 2.2 pounds, it’s less than half the weight of the Panga. Patagonia’s bag is also made through fair trade production and uses fully recycled nylon, adding points for sustainability.

The Details: 33 x 15.75 x 16 inches | 2.2 pounds | 80L | Recycled nylon and polyester with PU and TPU coatings

Best Oversized

Ortlieb big-zip.

This bag is big enough, and then some.

You can’t remove the straps on this bag and there’s no shoulder strap.

We’re returning to Ortlieb because this waterproof duffel is simply massive. At 140 liters, it’s 40 liters larger than most competing bags. Plus, it’s solid: this duffel is made with Ortlierb’s reliable waterproof polyester and it contains a reinforced zipper, so it won’t likely bust when thrown around on an airplane. 

This duffel has two padded backpack straps with handles, and one more handle on each end. The straps have also been reinforced, which will be key if you stuff this bag to capacity (good luck!).

Best Compact

Osprey transporter waterproof duffel.

Backcountry

This duffel is small enough to use as carry-on luggage.

It doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as some other bags on our list.

Osprey is one of the most well-known companies for travel packs, and its waterproof duffel hits all the right notes. The Transporter is made with fully-recycled nylon and rated IPX7, so it’s reliably waterproof. Nothing’s getting in through that YKK AquaSeal zipper either. 

Padded, fully removable carrying straps turn it into a backpack, and there are grab loops on either side as well. Other key features include an internal removable mesh pocket and compression straps, as well as exterior loops to secure it to a vehicle. 

If you’re looking for something larger, the transporter also comes in 70L and 100L sizes. 

The Details: 9.84 x 14.7 x 23.23 inches | 2.1 pounds | 40L | Ripstop nylon with TPU coating

Best Collapsible

Matador freefly packable duffel.

It’s super light and packable despite its collapsing feature, so you can take this duffel as a daypack anywhere.

This bag shouldn't be fully submerged.

If you don’t need to pack too much, this little duffel is unparalleled in function and convenience. At 30 liters, it’s not huge, but it’s perfect for a day out. Wear it as a backpack, hold it like a suitcase, or grab it from either end. You can also attach it to the handle of a roller bag with a built-in buckle. The best part about this duffel is that you can stuff it into its tiny pouch and toss it into a larger bag (the dimensions are 3.75 x 3.7 x 5.5 inches when in the pouch).

Note that while Matador calls this duffel “weatherproof,” it’s not fully submersible.

Most Stylish

Rains hilo weekend bag large.

This duffel is sleek and fashionable for a weekend away.

Don’t expect to put too much in this bag as its max size is 47 liters.

Stay stylishly prepared for anything with this futuristic-looking bag from Rains. Made with the same material (polyester with a PU coating) as the Danish brand’s rain jackets , this duffel has a W3 waterproof rating, so it can handle drizzles but nothing too heavy. There are padded handles as well as a detachable shoulder strap, but no backpack straps. Unique features include the compression straps on the sides that enable you to shrink the whole thing down a bit.

Rains also sells this bag in 18.5L and 36L . For the largest range of colors, including a striking storm blue, check out the medium size.

Best Budget

Sea to summit duffle bag.

Sea to Summit

It’s just as stylish and spacious as pricier options — and the padded lid makes the bag easy to pack.

It’s not quite as durable as some other duffels on our list.

While many brands will claim to be waterproof, they’re probably just water-resistant — which means your stuff might end up soaked. But the thing is, waterproof materials aren’t cheap. This Sea to Summit is as low-budget as you can go for a fully waterproof duffel bag, but that doesn’t mean it skimps on quality. Sea to Summit makes quality travel stuff, and the nylon and zippers on this bag are tough. Wear it as a backpack, over the shoulder, or hold it by the backpack straps, which attach with a magnet. The lid of this bag is also remarkable, since it's wide and opens upwards for easy packing.

If you need more space, this duffel comes in this carry-on size, as well as 65L, 90L and 130L.

Best Splurge

Filson medium dry duffel bag.

No need to worry about the zipper breaking on this rugged and luxurious bag because it doesn’t have one.

There aren’t many creative features here – it’s just a big hole and roll top.

Filson has more than a century of experience making tough bags, and this duffel honors its name. Made with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-coated nylon, it’s fully waterproof. It’s also extra reliable since it uses a zipperless roll-top closure – simply roll it three times, then buckle it up to secure the seal. Buckles, if they break, are much easier to replace than zippers. This bag also has a removable shoulder strap and two well-enforced handles. 

The medium version of this bag has a 60-liter capacity, but if you need even more space there’s a large 90L .

Tips for Buying Waterproof Duffel Bags

Determine how much space you’ll need.

Waterproof duffels can come as small as a handbag-sized 18.5L up to a gigantic 140L. And most brands offer various capacity options. Scuba divers, for instance, will need more than someone just carrying a few outfits for a camping weekend. Review your equipment before buying to determine how big of a bag you need. 

Consider ease of transport

Duffel bags have different carrying options — and some have more than one. There’s the classic two-strap handle for your hand as well as backpack straps and an over-the-shoulder strap, which has seemingly gone out of style. There are also often carrying handles on either end of the bag. Choose your favorite ways to carry, and make sure to buy a duffel with those straps. In this writer’s experience, more options are better. For instance, a duffel that has only backpack straps and no additional carry options can be a bit cumbersome when trying to quickly lug it around an airport. 

Know your organization needs

Most waterproof duffel bags simply offer a single large pocket for your stuff, but it can be annoying to fish around for that little accessory you need. Some duffels solve this problem by including an interior mesh pocket, which you can sometimes remove. Others have outside pockets, but make sure those are fully waterproof before using them. You’ll find some duffels with internal organization, but those aren’t usually fully waterproof.

Waterproof duffels are usually some form of nylon or polyester. However, official ratings are actually more important than materials when it comes to degrees of waterproofness. Check to see if your duffel has an official rating such as IPX6 or IPX7. These ratings guarantee waterproofing when submerged to a certain depth for a limited period. Other duffels without this rating may simply be water-resistant thanks to a spray-on coating.

Waterproof duffels are great for adventures in which submerging yourself or your gear in water is likely or possible — think of a canoe ride, a multi-day trip in a small boat, or sports like scuba diving. Waterproof duffels will also come in handy on backpacking trips in wet climates, like those in the Pacific Northwest or Eastern Canada. If you’re not going to face a ton of wetness or rain, a water-resistant duffel or weekender bag may be sufficient.

Most airlines will allow carry-on luggage of around 50L, so if you want to comply, make sure your duffel is smaller than that. It’s also a good idea to check the dimensions — though since duffel bags are soft, it may be OK if it’s an inch or two bigger. Check your airline’s baggage restrictions to be sure. Also keep in mind that if you’ll be carrying it around an airport, you’ll want to make sure it has comfortable straps and perhaps various carrying options for different points in your trip.

Easy to pack, versatile enough to cram into overhead compartments on planes and sturdy enough to strap to mules, yaks and overlanding trucks – enter the duffel…

Duffel or duffle? You’ll see both spellings out there, but the name of the original is Duffel – named after the town in Belgium where the cloth that made the first ‘holdall-type’ bags came from. Now it’s used generically to describe a style of bag and is spelt both ways. Fabric: Ripstop, water-resistant, abrasion-resistant, weatherproof – you’ll see a host of these terms bandied around when it comes to duffel material. For travel, you need something that stands up to heavy handling, so look for durable fabric. Water resistance is good, but will add weight. Remember, anything with a zip – even if it is a coated zip – is never fully watertight. Extras: Some keep it simple with a large main compartment only. Others use dividers inside or offer pockets (both internal and external). It’s a matter of personal choice. Remember, extra pockets can help organise, but will add weight. Weight: The more durable and robust – or the more water-resistant – the more likely the unpacked weight will be higher. Think about what you’re more likely to use the bag for: is it for water activities or use in wet climates? Then water-resistance will be key for you. Is it for porter-assisted trekking or overlanding? In which case, a robust, heavy-duty fabric is a must. Or is it just as a way to pack fast when staying in hotels on a road trip? Then a lightweight fabric that packs down small will do. Carry system: Traditional duffels were all about the shoulder strap or two grab handles. Now many offer alternative methods of carrying, such as rucksack straps or even wheels for ease of use and versatility. Do remember that extra straps all add weight. Removable straps are handy. Zips: Look for chunky, sturdy zips that won’t break easily – the ability to lock them is also handy.
