SUN, SPICE AND SEA BREEZES
It's no coincidence that many of the best European cruises call in the most beautiful ports in the world. Eat your way through the cobbled streets of Italy, contrast the timeless beauty of Greece's ruins with the modern chic that's come to define its islands or hike through forlorn caverns and up lush waterfalls in captivating Croatia.
DISCOVER LA DOLCE VITA
From the storied streets of Rome to the charming canals of Venice, Italy is a country that needs no introduction. Whether you pose with Michelangelo's David in Florence or indulge in to-die-for Pizza in Naples, it's no wonder why so many cruises to Europe visit la bella Italia.
FROM THE ACROPOLIS TO THE AEGEAN
Greece is remarkable, from the ancient Acropolis of Athens to the blue-roofed houses of Santorini. Whether you trek through the limestone hills in the north or swim through the cobalt waters around the Cyclades, it's easy to see why this is one of the best places to visit in Europe.
"GAMES OF THRONES" Lives On
The hit TV show might be finished, but "Game of Thrones" fans will recognize dozens of locations in the walled city of Dubrovnik , the jewel of Croatia's Adriatic coast. Farther afield, explore the countless waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park or pair European cruises with tastings at underrated wineries.
SCENES THAT INSPIRED 1,000 PAINTINGS
Endless possibilities are what the coasts of France, Spain and Portugal have always been about. Generations of painting greats from Van Gogh to Picasso have found inspiration from the crystalline coasts of the French Riviera, to the craggy mountaintops of the Canary Islands. Of course, the best European cruises also dock in timeless cities like Barcelona, Cherbourg, Lisbon and beyond.
CITY OF LOVE, CÔTE D'AZUR
The only thing better than strolling into Paris as the Eiffel Tower lights up at night? Sitting down for a meal of fresh-caught seafood as the sun sets into the harbor of aptly-named Nice. France has got something for every traveler, which is why so many cruises to Europe dock here.
SAY "SALUD" TO SPAIN
Sitting down for Spanish tapas is one of the most satisfying food experiences in the world, especially when you wash it down with fruity sangria. Plus, the Jurassic topography of the Canary Islands and the storied streets of Barcelona are just a few of the best places to visit in Europe you'll find here.
KING OF DISCOVERY
Portugal is where many of the first expeditions to the New World start, but most people on European cruises bound for Lisbon wonder why anyone would leave. Explore the mysterious Quinta de Regaleira castle in Sintra, pour port wine in Porto or practice your surfing skills in the Algarve.

Join the best European cruises through the British Isles and along the coast of the Netherlands, where enchanted country charm and royal, old-world cities offer endless possibilities for memories that will last a lifetime.
THE JOY OF GOING DUTCH
The Dutch have managed to keep the sea at bay for hundreds of years, but many of the best European cruises still make their way into Amsterdam . If you tire of the tranquility you find amid tulip fields and beneath towering windmills, make your way to the hipster capital of Rotterdam.
ETERNAL LANDSCAPES ON THE EMERALd ISLE
Life is but a dream in Ireland , whether you down a pint of Guinness and trace tales told by James Joyce in Dublin, or careen along the Cliffs of Moher along the west coast. Many cruises to Europe also stop in Northern Ireland's Belfast, a city that's a testament to rebirth and reconciliation.
STEP INTO A SCOTTISH FAIRYTALE
When you visit Scotland, it can be difficult to discern legend from real life. Strolling down Edinburgh's Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle might feel like a dream, while the fabled and mythical Loch Ness may surprise you with its charm and stunning scenery. Scotland's one of the best places to visit in Europe, period.
WINTER SKIES, SUMMER SUN
Scandinavia is dark for much of the year, but light is what defines its polar nations, from the Midnight Sun that rises high above Demark in mid-summer, to the skies above Norway and Iceland amid winter's deepest freeze. Find endless possibilities and the best European cruises along the Baltic, from the savory seafood eateries of Oslo, to the cold cityscape of Reykjavik.
SCANDINAVIA'S UNSUNG SISTER
Many of the best European cruises dock in Denmark, and it's no wonder why. From colorful Nyhavn harbor in Copenhagen to storied castles like Amalienborg and Frederiksborg, Denmark more than makes up for the fact that its more famous neighbors often eclipse it.
LAND OF FIRE AND ICE
It's easy to be intrigued by Iceland , whether you walk through Reykjavik's riveting Hallgrimskirkja church, or visit “the Wash Road”, the hippest shopping district in the city. There are few better ways to cap off cruises to Europe than a dip in the aptly-named Blue Lagoon.
PRICELESS PANORAMAS, FABULOUS FJORDs
Norway is a country in beautiful balance. Had enough of the orderliness of Oslo? Head west to beautiful Bergen, where finger-shaped fjords jut into and out of thousands of miles of coastline. Or contrast a fresh fish dinner at sea level with the view from towering Trolltunga cliff.
Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.
You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your vacation.
Europeans speak more English the farther north you go. Your phone's translation app (or, at minimum, learning how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in local languages) will aid you along the Mediterranean.
RELATED PORTS
Learn more about Baltic ports like Klaipeda, Lithuania and Tallinn, Estonia, or read up on Bergen, the gateway to Norway's stunning fjords. The Mediterranean provides many options but start by exploring Malaga on Spain's Costa del Sol or the exciting Monte Carlo, Monaco. The most popular ports in the British Isles are Edinburgh in Scotland and the cities of Belfast and Dublin in Ireland. No matter what you like, you will find your favourite European cruise.

Why Cruise in Europe
Cruising vs Land Vacations
The value of vacation.
Revel in first-class experiences without the first-class price tag. On a European cruise, unpack once and save on transportation and baggage fees as well as dining and entertainment costs. Independent land travel through Europe adds up fast — between accommodations, restaurants, train travel, taxis and more. But with Princess, you can spend more time exploring Europe and less time checking into your next hotel.
Experience Different Seasons of Europe
Sail into the season.
See the many faces of the world with seasonal European cruise sailings from Princess. In the spring, shop France’s colorful outdoor markets for hand-crafted souvenirs. Frolic through Norway’s landscapes when they fully bloom in summer. Or visit Italy in the fall to taste the first wines of the season.
Sail Aboard Our Newest Ships
Your best-in-class travel companion.
Built in Italy, our newest ships first set sail in international waters for their inaugural season. On a European cruise, you can be one of the first to travel aboard these vessels, adding a whole new level of excitement and opportunity to your trip. Plus these are the first ships designed with Princess® MedallionClass®, making them the best European cruises at sea.
See Famous Landmarks
Where history books come alive.
Between the castles, towers and ruins, Europe is teeming with ancient architecture. On a European cruise, sail into Le Havre and choose to visit the beaches of Normandy or ascend the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Walk through the Colosseum in Rome, and stop by Livorno to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Or explore hidden gems — like Belfast’s Giant’s Causeway.
A Vacation for Every Generation

How to compare river cruise lines.
- Price-wise, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! If you want to snag a deal, you can look in the off-season, but keep in mind that depending on where you go, the weather and availability of popular attractions can change dramatically.
- Certain companies are more reputable than others. Keep this in mind when booking a river cruise and always read reviews on TourRadar beforehand.
- Some cruise ships will also offer travellers an all-inclusive package – these include off-shore excursions and alcoholic drinks onboard. Not all river cruise lines have this option, so ask ahead of time. And while it may increase the price at the time of booking, you'll very likely be saving money in the long run.
- Another thing to consider when comparing cruise lines is the kind of views offered onboard. Choose your cruise provider carefully and select your room even more thoughtfully as many options include varying qualities of views.

9 best river cruises in Europe
River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.
Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.
Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.
Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.
The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.
Here are the best river cruises in Europe.
Upper Danube
When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.
Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.
Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.
You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube
For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.
The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.
Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.
When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.
That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.
The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.
Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.
Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.
In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.
Related: River cruise packing list: What to pack when traveling by riverboat
Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers — and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.
You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?
Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone
Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.
Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.
For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.
On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.
River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.
The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.
The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.
The one-week route doesn't take you far but does include the walled city of Padua, the charming fishing village of Chioggia, and the culinary mecca of Bologna.
For those looking for a longer experience, Uniworld cleverly combines a Po cruise with luxury rail journeys to places like Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond.

Base fares include all onboard dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, group fitness classes and more. Add those benefits to Virgin's ongoing sales, and you're looking at a top-notch experience for less.

Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises' vessels offer the endless amenities and buffets of its competitors' megaships but maintain the service standard of smaller lines. Rates on Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries run less than $200 per person, and all-inclusive add-on packages are available.

Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises targets more adult travelers (especially on longer voyages) than family-oriented lines like Royal Caribbean International, but at similar prices. Along with lodging and select dining, fares cover activities like cooking demonstrations and educational lectures.

Royal Caribbean International
With more than 25 cruise ships, Royal Caribbean is one of the largest lines sailing the ocean today. Having the ability to accommodate thousands of guests per ship allows the company to keep rates low. In fact, travelers may find itineraries in popular destinations throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, the Bahamas and the Pacific Coast for around $250 per person.

Holland America Line
Cruisers will find this premium cruise line to be a pretty good bargain, with four-day Caribbean sailings often starting at less than $300 per person, and short voyages along the Pacific Coast coming in around $100 per person. But cutting costs doesn't mean skimping on service; Holland America ships offer individualized attention, free room service and all-inclusive package options.

MSC Cruises
MSC offers sailings from North American ports like Miami, New York City and Orlando, Florida, though the majority of its voyages depart from international locales. But even if you have to fly to a foreign port, you'll save money over a typical land vacation abroad. Mediterranean sailings can start at around $100 per person, and the line offers several deals and money-saving packages.

Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival specializes in budget-friendly fun, offering frequent, significant discounts on already low prices. In fact, itineraries for around $200 per person are the norm. Access to most of the ships' activities won't cost a penny, but keep in mind that some extras (like specialty restaurants, beverages and certain attractions) aren't covered in fares.

Norwegian Cruise Line
With its popular, frequently running Free at Sea program, Norwegian offers travelers discounts on Wi-Fi, excursions, alcohol, airfare and more on top of its already low prices. And, similar to luxury lines, Norwegian ditches steadfast rules like assigned dining times, but costs a fraction of the price.

Cunard Line
While you may not expect to find a more opulent line like Cunard on this list, the cruise provider has a surprising number of relatively reasonable fares for upcoming sailings. Travelers can fully enjoy the line's old-world elegance knowing that room service, onboard activities and most dining options are included in the base price.

Costa Cruises
A member of the Carnival family, Costa Cruises is primarily based in Europe. The fleet offers lower rates than its competitors, particularly for its Mediterranean itineraries (think: fares starting at less than $100 per person). Although it offers family-friendly amenities, Costa's ships are also well-suited to adults, with various entertainment options like theater shows and casinos.

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts
These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.
Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.
Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises
When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.
For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.
Oceania Cruises
Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."
If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.
Viking Cruises
Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."
Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant
French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.
Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.
Windstar Cruises
Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.
Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours
Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.
Cunard Line
Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line
This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.
Paul Gauguin Cruises
Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises
Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.
Celebrity Cruises
Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.

Central Europe Floods: How River Cruise Companies Are Adapting
Photo: Shutterstock.com
River cruise companies are navigating catastrophic flooding in Central Europe that has already killed at least six people this week.
According to the AP , several countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania are dealing with major flooding because of record rainfall caused by a low-pressure system from northern Italy. The floods could soon impact Slovakia and Hungary, too.
The floods are impacting portions of the Danube River, a main artery for Europe’s river cruise industry. For those river cruise companies, the floods are starting to have an impact on operations, which could grow, particularly if the floods continue to get worse.
What river cruise lines are doing
Avalon Waterways is changing two current sailings, communicating those changes directly with guests and travel advisors. It is also canceling two future sailings.
“While we do everything we can to create contingency plans that offer Avalon guests incredible experiences when Mother Nature intervenes with record rainfall in a short period of time, it becomes increasingly difficult to deliver an elevated cruising experience,” Avalon Waterways told TMR in a statement on Monday.
A spokesperson for AmaWaterways, for instance, told TMR on Monday that “the high water has caused some minor inconveniences.” Those include some ship swaps or adjustments in impacted areas to make itineraries work. No AmaWaterways itinerary has yet to be canceled by the floods.
Riviera Cruises has also been forced to make changes. A spokesperson said that “a small number of Riviera’s scheduled itineraries” have been affected. “In these situations, the line has an experienced team focusing on making itinerary and excursion amendments to ensure any guest disruption is minimized.”
A Viking spokesperson also confirmed that it has not made any changes to any itineraries because of the flooding as of yet. As of early on Tuesday morning, it had still not changed any current sailings.
Scenic Group told TMR that the ongoing flooding “will require modification of ship itineraries and schedules frequently and on short notice.”
“Where possible we will reschedule our fleet of Scenic Space-Ships and Emerald Cruises Star-Ships to allow us to enact ship swaps. However, we are restricted with the current rising water levels, specifically around the upper Danube River areas of Vienna and Budapest,” a spokesperson added.
“We are working closely with our team on the ground in Europe and are contacting as a priority all guests and their travel advisors if their river cruise is impacted. The Scenic Group management team are committed to doing everything we can and will provide further updates on this page as the situation progresses. Our thoughts are with our local teams, families, and all impacted by these devastating floods.”
Uniworld is also making changes.
“Due to unseasonably high water levels in Central Europe, various cities and stretches along Danube rivers have been impacted, temporarily affecting operations for river cruise lines. We are actively monitoring the situation and communicating any program adjustments with impacted Uniworld guests and their Travel Advisors,” a Uniworld spokesperson said.
“Guests can be assured that the operations team is working diligently to provide them with alternatives that meet Uniworld’s strict standards for quality and service, delivering the 5-star experience that they know and expect.”
Riverside Luxury Cruises said it also has made some major changes. Riverside Mozart remains docked at Vienna, Austria, and will not continue to Passau, Germany, where the current voyage was scheduled to conclude on September 19.
“At the cruise line’s expense, Riverside is arranging transfers to Passau or Munich, Germany, for guests on disembarkation day to meet their flights or next scheduled engagement with minimum interruption,” a spokesperson said.
Riverside Mozart’s September 19 th voyage has also been canceled.
This is a developing story. Check back for more updates.

Four Caterpillar-MaK 12V43C engines that each produce 12,600 kW (16,900 hp) drive two ABB azimuthing podded thrusters to propel the ship to a maximum speed of 22 knots.
The ship has 14 decks that include accommodation spaces for up to 3,000 guests. Multiple inside and outside stateroom and suite options are available, and there are even a limited number of suites that have direct access to either one of the two exclusive onboard restaurants. Work on the guest cabin interiors was undertaken by Sybille de Margerie while David Collins Studio and Richmond International were responsible for the other onboard spaces.
Other onboard facilities include 15 restaurants, bars, lounges, boutique shops, an observation deck, fitness centres, spas, beauty salons, a film theatre with 835 seats, a casino, a games room, a library, an art gallery with over 4,000 displayed works, pools (including one with a retractable dome roof), a children’s activity area, and a lobby/atrium. A large indoor area spanning two decks can be used for a range of activities such as afternoon tea, recitals, cocktails, and ballroom dancing.
There are a selection of energy efficiency-enhancing technologies such as HVAC systems with energy-saving features, engine room pumps and ventilation fans with variable speed drives, and LED lighting. A shore power connection will allow the ship to have sufficient electricity even when the engines are switched off, thus reducing air emissions and noise while berthed.
Features to help minimise environmental impact
The ship is also fitted with waste processing equipment to maximise opportunities for the re-use and recycling of waste produced on board. The majority of water that will be used on board will be produced using installed equipment.
An advanced wastewater treatment system is also installed to purify water used on board to municipal treatment plant-water quality. The water can then be directly re-used or discharged with no risk of harming the surrounding marine environment.
Queen Anne sailed on its maiden operational voyage under the Cunard Line banner on May 3, 2024, when it departed Lisbon to serve a seven-night itinerary. The ship’s future voyages will encompass North America, the Panama Canal, Northern Europe, the British Isles, the Canary Islands, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
The newbuild joins Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria , and Queen Elizabeth as the fourth member of the Cunard fleet, marking the first time since 1998 that the luxury cruise brand will have four ships in simultaneous service.
Explora II Officially Named in Civitavecchia
- September 16, 2024
The Explora II, the second ship in Explora Journeys’ fleet, was officially named in a ceremony at the port of Civitavecchia, near Rome. The event celebrated the brand’s vision of redefining luxury ocean travel with European hospitality and maritime heritage, the company stated.
The ship’s godmother, Rosalba Giugni, founder of the Marevivo Foundation, led the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony, honoring her decades-long commitment to ocean conservation.
Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani and film director Giuseppe Tornatore attended the event, which featured a gala dinner, a musical performance by Tony Hadley and a drone show showcasing Explora Journeys’ story.
Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, Pierfrancesco Vago said: “Naming a new ship is a proud maritime tradition, and tonight’s celebration marks our continued growth as we redefine luxury ocean travel. Our vision began with the contemporary brand MSC Cruises where we developed a premium offer with MSC Yacht Club and from there we identified a further demand for luxury experiences at sea. With Explora Journeys we offer an unparalleled value proposition and a unique offering compared to other types of luxury holiday. By 2028 the Explora Journeys fleet will comprise six ships offering a spirit of luxurious ocean adventure visiting sought-after destinations, where our guests can expect the same high standards and quality service across our fleet, all over the globe.”
The Explora II’s seven-night maiden voyage, which departs on Monday, Sept. 16, will visit Sorrento, Lipari, Trapani, Siracusa and Valletta, ending in Tarragona, Spain. The Explora II, as well as her sister ship the Explora I, will reposition to the Caribbean for the winter season, offering itineraries to destinations like St. Barts, Aruba and Antigua.
In the summer of 2025, the Explora II will sail the Western Mediterranean, visiting ports such as Barcelona, St. Tropez, Monte Carlo and Porto Cervo.

The Hague bans ads for petrol cars and cruise ships that boost ‘the Godfathers of climate chaos’
Cities have banned plastics and coffee pods to protect the environment. But The Hague will make history as the first to ban all fossil fuel-related advertising.
The Dutch city, home to top international bodies such as the United Nations’s International Criminal Court, decided last week to ban any ads from the fossil fuel industry, whether for petrol cars, cruise ships, or air travel.
It’s an uncommon step for countries to take, given the clout that fossil fuel companies have in the world. Some countries have taken similar measures, such as France, which introduced a law banning advertising on fossil fuel products except methane gas. Edinburgh’s council prohibited promoting fossil fuel-powered products in city spaces, and Amsterdam made similar efforts to restrict ads in subway stations and city centers. Still, none of those measures are as sweeping as the The Hague’s.
The administration’s move comes just months after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for countries to bring such a ban to effect as fossil fuel companies were “ the Godfathers of climate chaos .” He wanted cities to take a hard-line stance in advertising for such products, akin to tobacco industry products.
The Hague’s law could potentially be more complicated to overturn than actions taken by other European cities. It could also bring the city of 500,000 residents closer to its goal of becoming carbon dioxide neutral by 2030.
“We believe that adopting binding laws to ban fossil-fuel advertising through local legislation is a world-first,” Leonie Gerritsen, a councilor for the Party for Animals (PvdD) that proposed the ban, told AFP .
“We hope that this law will also signal other cities to do the same to fight climate change.”
The move will come into effect at the start of next year.
PvdD also spoke out about the European Union spending tens of millions of euros on promoting the meat industry, calling it “unfathomable” earlier this year .
Edinburgh’s council banned ads for fossil fuel-heavy industries, such as cruises and car manufacturers, stating that such promotions went against its 2030 net-zero objectives and wouldn’t be the best use of council-owned spaces like billboards or bus stops.
“It’s a way of saying fossil fuel companies and arms manufacturers are not welcome in our city,” Ben Parker, the city councilor of Edinburgh who led the efforts on its ad ban, told the Washington Post in June.
Fossil fuel companies are among the world’s top-ranking companies, as seen in the Fortune 500 Europe list. So, a few cities cracking down on advertising may not do much to hurt their business or have a far-reaching effect on carbon emissions.
However, The Hague’s steps set a precedent for other European cities to adopt a stronger stance on fossil fuel promotions.
