“This is the sonic recreation of the end of the world”: Pendulum's 'go hard or go home' approach ensures that they remain an essential live act
Despite releasing their last full-length album 14 years ago, pendulum play a spectacular set bridging the past and the future at london’s o2 arena.
You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we understand you have come here tonight to hear some drum and bass,” a robotic voice narrates before Pendulum burst into Blood Sugar . “We would like to announce that this is not the case... This is the sonic recreation of the end of the world.”
Is this a declaration of bluster that doesn’t really mean much? Yes. But does it perfectly encapsulate the kind of bombast and showmanship that’s pulled nearly 10,000 people to The O2 on Good Friday? Also yes.
Pendulum have long been about being the biggest band possible – in more ways than one. Following their 2005 debut album Hold Your Colour , the Aussies became one of the few acts to escape the clutches of the drum and bass scene, rock-tinged anthems like Propane Nightmares and Witchcraft earning them legitimate mainstream goodwill. Plus, all of their songs just sound fucking huge. Almost every track the outfit will play this evening explodes with the sound of synths, percussion, distorted guitars and heroic vocals, making for an impressively overblown barrage of hooks.
It’s been 14 years since Pendulum last released a full-length album, 2010’s Immersion , but tonight’s not merely a nostalgia show. Napalm , an as-yet-unreleased track expected to show up on a future EP, opens in an onslaught of aptly destructive breakdowns. The heaviness is only hammered home by the backdrops the band have brought with them: video screens as high as this arena’s roof broadcast footage of detonations in sync with every musical blast.
The spectacle continues through Crush and a surprisingly early Propane Nightmares , with armadas of spotlights and lasers working overtime to keep up with the pulsing anthems. New songs like Archangel (another soon-to-be-released jam making its live debut) and 2023’s Colourfast hold their own, the powerful voice of Rob Swire bringing the grandeur during the more melancholy musical mood.
It’s not a calm that lasts for long, mind. Golden oldie The Island Part 1 gets a response as rapturous as you’d expect, its more climactic tone doubled down upon by Halo (guest snarling on which was originally done by Matt Tuck of Bullet For My Valentine) and, even more so, the emergence of Rou Reynolds from Enter Shikari. The ensemble proceed to cover Sorry, You’re Not A Winner : a gambit that pays tremendous dividends the second 10,000 people are united in doing those claps to the opening riff.
Metalheads get yet another treat when the scathing riff of In Flames collaboration Self Vs Self hits. The track disappeared from the Pendulum setlist for 13 years, but has now become a dark horse in their back-catalogue, following victorious airings at Alexandra Palace and Download festival last year. It works wonders here as well, holding its own amidst the closing stack of bangers that is Witchcraft , Tarantula and Watercolour .
The Tempest closes the evening with a more obscure selection, yet it doesn’t dampen the joy radiating throughout The O2 as the night ends. Pendulum have bridged hits of yesteryear with some promising debuts and, with singer Swire never once 'bantering' between songs, done it in such a way as to never let the show’s momentum dip. These 100 minutes have flown by: evidence of how captivating this bunch have become by perpetually firing with all sonic cylinders.
Pendulum setlist – O2 Arena, London March 29, 2024
Napalm Crush Propane Nightmares Come Alive Blood Sugar/Baddadan/Voodoo People (The Prodigy cover) Colourfast Archangel Encoder Mercy Killing (with Scarlxrd) The Island Part 1 (Dawn) Silent Spinner Nothing For Free Sorry You’re Not A Winner ( Enter Shikari cover, with Rou Reynolds) Halo Witchcraft Self Vs Self Tarantula Watercolour

Pendulum drop "Napalm" with Joey Valence & Brae
Aug 20 News Dylan Tarre
Australian drum and bass pioneers Pendulum are back with a brand new single, "Napalm," featuring a collaboration with American hip hop duo Joey Valence & Brae . This release marks the band's first new track of 2024.
Pendulum founder and producer Rob Swire talked about working with the duo:
“As soon as I heard their single ‘Punk Tactics’ I knew we had to work together on a heavy DnB track”
Pendulum , recognized as one of Australia's premier electronic exports, broke into the scene in 2005 with the launch of their debut album, Hold Your Colour , which quickly rose to the top of the UK charts. Infusing drum and bass with rock elements, the Perth-based group has garnered a strong following, selling over 1 million albums and attracting more than 2.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Their subsequent albums, In Silico (2008) and Immersion (2010), further solidified their success before taking a hiatus in 2012. Returning in 2015, Pendulum resumed live performances and introduced new tracks, "Nothing for Free" and "Driver," in 2020. Following this resurgence, the EPs Elemental (2021) and Anima (2023) were released as the band embarked on a UK headline tour earlier this year.
"Napalm," their latest single, offers a glimpse of what lies ahead for fans, with more music slated for release later in the year. Pendulum are currently on tour with multiple dates this weekend across the UK and September dates set in North America.

"We've always had one foot in the metal scene, so collaborating with Matt from Bullet For My Valentine was an incredible experience and his voice brought something completely unique to the table," he added.

Pendulum team up with Joey Valence & Brae on new single ‘Napalm’
Following a blistering show at London’s O2 Arena in March this year, Pendulum have teamed up with hotly-tipped punk hip-hop duo Joey Valence & Brae on their abrasive new single ‘Napalm’. The track is the first new music the band have dropped in 2024 and comes ahead of their unmissable main stage performance on Reading & Leeds Festival main stages this weekend.
A raucous drum and bass floor filler, ‘Napalm’ is Pendulum at their heaviest. Produced by Rob Swire at his London studio the track is raw, infectious and ready made for the festival main stages. Listen to ‘Napalm’ HERE .
Speaking of the collaboration, Rob Swire said, “as soon as I heard their single ‘Punk Tactics’ I knew we had to work together on a heavy DnB track”. Joey Valence & Brae continue “this is such a legendary collab for us. We’ve both been fans of Pendulum and drum and bass in general for so long, so it’s crazy to finally do a track together.”
Undoubtedly one of the biggest electronic bands of all time, Pendulum have 3 platinum albums to their name, including renowned debut Hold Your Colour and a UK #1 and #2 for Immersion and In Silico . The drum and bass/rock band from Perth, Australia have sold over a million albums in the UK alone, as well as selling out global arena tours and playing to thousands across main stage performances from Glastonbury and Download to Reading and Leeds on top of a headline slot at Ultra Miami.
The band returned with their EP Elemental in 2021 along with the comeback of the live band. In 2023 they followed up with their EP Anima , featuring Matt Tuck from Bullet For My Valentine and acclaimed trap metal artist Scarlxrd. The band completed their biggest UK headline tour to date in 2024, including a stop at London’s O2 and with more music slated for 2024/25 the band are back on strong form.

Pendulum drop new single with Joey Valence & Brae
What a collab! Hear Pendulum team up with alternative hip-hop duo Joey Valence & Brae for “heavy drum’n’bass” banger Napalm.
Pendulum have just unleashed a brand-new single with breakout stars Joey Valence & Brae .
Entitled Napalm, the track is the Perth electronic-rock titans’ first new material of 2024, and it was seemingly an absolute no-brainer to get JVB involved. As frontman Rob Swire enthuses: “As soon as I heard their single Punk Tactics, I knew we had to work together on a heavy DnB track.”
Joey and Brae agree that, “This is such a legendary collab for us. We’ve both been fans of Pendulum and drum’n’bass in general for so long, so it’s crazy to finally do a track together.”
As an added bonus, Napalm arrives ahead of Pendulum’s main stage sets at this weekend’s Reading & Leeds – and we couldn’t be more excited to hear it live…

Harry and Meghan’s glossy Colombia tour ends on a high – but not everyone is convinced
The pair ended their tour in the once notorious cartel city of cali, article bookmarked.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex called time on their quasi-royal tour of Colombia on Sunday with an evening of dancing and cheering in the former cartel city of Cali – but there were mixed feelings from locals towards the couple’s visit.
Upon arrival in the country on Thursday , the pair were whisked to vice president Francia Marquez’s private residence, where it was revealed their invitation had been prompted by Marquez enjoying their Netflix documentary.
The vice-president’s invitation was an attempt to “bring people who give her media attention” due to distant ties with President Gustavo Petro who “has not done much in the last two years”, political scientist Mónica Pachón told The Independent .
But as their tour ended, some Colombians appeared unmoved by the carefully choreographed four-day trip.
“It’s very strange, they move like ghosts,” Arturo, a waiter in Avenida Jimenez de Quesada told the Daily Mail on Thursday.
Adding: ‘Tell me what they look like if you catch them!’
While in a remote visit to the town of San Basilio, just south of Cartagena, Justo Valdés, 70, a singer in the local band Son Palenque, asked: “Who is Meghan ?” and was unaware of the country to which Harry was a prince, according to The Telegraph.
What the couple managed to achieve from their visit remains unclear prompting royal critics to brand the unofficial tour as a PR stunt for both the Sussexes’ and Colombian government.
Questions over the extravagance of their visit, including security costs expected for the Colombian government, have created an awkward imposition against the backdrop of a largely poverty-stricken country.
Colombia ranks second after Brazil in Latin America for economic inequality with 16,708,153, people declared to be living in a situation of monetary poverty in 2023, according to Oxfam and DANE (Colombia’s National Administrative Department of Statistics).
The country also faces significant inequality between urban and rural areas with 30.6 per cent of people living in poverty in urban areas in 2023, compared to 41.2 per cent in rural zones.
In the north, cities such as Santa Marta and Cartagena face ongoing poverty with rampant child prostitution and exploitation in blatant operations.
Critics claim that the Sussexes’ trip was advantageous for both parties looking to boost their popularity in the public eye. However, the Sussexes’ focus on the dangerous impact of social media on Colombian children felt like a gloss over the multiplicity of social, political, and economic challenges faced by the country.
A Bogota-based British journalist said the mood towards Harry and Meghan felt more positive compared to how parts of the media perceived the trip.
He said: “A lot of Colombians are pretty mad for the royals, the antiquated traditions and all the gossip that surrounds them.
“I think most Colombians with an opinion on the matter are pleased that Harry & Meghan have taken the time to visit Colombia, show an interest and spotlight both its wonders and its issues.
“Most of the coverage has been positive, including on Harry & Meghan getting involved in salsa dancing and Meghan impressing with her Spanish while in conversation with the VP.
“What irks Colombians more, I think, is the tabloid coverage saying that the trip is foolish because Colombia is some kind of off-limits lawless, hellhole run by cartels.”
Albeit, Harry was caught out in a dubious position when Marquez, who is one of the world’s leading voices in the call for reparations, set up a national commission to “repair the historical debt owed”.
Harry denounced the “unjust” system that saw “enslaved people” generate wealth for the Crown, yet continues to remain a seen member of the Royal family globally despite cutting his familial ties.

Florence Welch Joins Taylor Swift Onstage in London to Sing 'Florida!!!' in Song's Eras Tour Debut
Jack Antonoff also joined Swift for a mash-up as the star's five-night Wembley Stadium stint came to a close on Aug. 20

Taylor Swift had some surprises up her sleeve for the last of her five-night Eras Tour stint in London!
The pop superstar invited pal Florence Welch to the stage at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday, Aug. 20 for a surprise performance of their song "Florida!!!" which appears on Swift's most recent album The Tortured Poets Department . Later in the show, friend and producer Jack Antonoff joined her for a mash-up.
The performance with Welch, 37, marked their song's Eras Tour debut, and the first time Swift has ever played it live.
Antonoff, 40, meanwhile, joined Swift for a mash-up of "Death By a Thousand Cuts" off her album Lover , as well as "Getaway Car" off Reputation .
"I think a lot about why I'm lucky enough to get to do a show like the Eras Tour, and it's because I've been fortunate enough to find friendships over the years that have been incredible collaborative and creative [forces]," she told the crowd while introducing Antonoff. "I get to make music with one of my best friends in the world, and he's here tonight."
She added that the songs she and the Grammy-winning producer would be performing were some of their "favorite ones that we've done together."

Afterward, Swift sat down at the piano to sing "So Long, London," marking the song's live debut.
"You know, we have done a lot of shows on here on this tour, so it's kind of rare to have a song that I've never performed live before," she said before playing. "And yet here we are."
Welch previously celebrated the release of Tortured Poets in April, writing on Instagram that "me and my ghosts we had a hell of a time 🖤 @taylorswift Honoured to be in this department."
Welch later told British Vogue that working with Swift in the studio nearly made her forget about Swift's massive level of fame .
"I almost didn't think of the scale of it," she said. "There's the sort of bigness of [Taylor Swift, the phenomenon], and then there's the Taylor I spend time with in the studio, who is just the sweetest and most down to earth."
Swift's shows in London have been nothing short of exciting. On the first night, she surprised fans by bringing out her longtime friend Ed Sheeran to the stage during the surprise songs section of her show and introduced him as her "second brother."
"Every time I am doing the Red part of this show, I think about the memories that we've made. And now he is someone who plays Wembley, like every week — this is like regular for him and he works so hard," she told the crowd. "He's on tour right now and he's probably so tired but he wanted to come and play for you and do this for all of us so give it up for Ed Sheeran!"
Together, they performed their songs "Everything Has Changed" and "End Game" as well as Sheeran's hit "Thinking Out Loud" for the crowd.
Then, on Aug. 17, she performed "I Did Something Bad" from Reputation live for the first time.
“So I'm going to do a song I've never done on the tour that's one of my favorite songs ever just because you're that awesome and you deserve something of this caliber,” Swift can be heard saying in a fan-captured video posted to TikTok .
She added: It's “such a dream to perform for a crowd like this, especially when there’s 92,000 of you.”
Meanwhile, over in the crowd, her dad Scott Swift was spotted handing out chicken tenders to fans.
The "Peter" singer first performed a string of shows in London in June. At the time, she got a backstage visit from Prince William and his two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte .
Her boyfriend Travis Kelce also made his Eras Tour debut during a costume change for the Tortured Poets Department segment of the show.
Swift's London shows mark the first time she returned to the stage after three shows were canceled in Vienna, Austria following an alleged terror plot targeting her shows.
After Tuesday's show, Swift will take a break for several weeks and will return to the stage in Miami on Oct. 18.

8 Moments You Might Have Missed From Taylor Swift's London Eras Tour Shows Over The Weekend
Entertainment Editor
After keeping us waiting for more than a year, Taylor Swift more than made up to her fans when she brought her show-stopping Eras Tour to Europe earlier in the summer.
Having already wowed Swifties all over the continent (including headline-grabbing shows around the UK in June), the 14-time Grammy winner is currently in the middle of a string of sold-out concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium, which is set to wrap up with two more shows on Monday and Tuesday night.
From lyrical tweaks and iconic additions to the setlist to celebrity guests in the crowd, here are eight things you might have missed from this weekend’s Eras Tour shows…
Fans finally got the surprise song they thought might never come
With Taylor having now been on the road since March 2023, she’s very much running out of surprise songs to perform during the acoustic set towards the end of her show.
And when her first string of UK shows came and went earlier in the summer without a whiff of London Boy, some fans felt the divisive Lover cut might never get an outing on the Eras tour.
But its moment finally came on Friday night, when Taylor told her fans that she “loves the English” and launched into an acoustic version of her Anglophile anthem.
She also changed one lyric to “I enjoy playing Wembley, sleeping ’til the afternoon” during the final chorus to commemorate the special occasion.

Taylor gave her parents a very sweet shout-out
Each night during the section of the Eras Tour dedicated to Folklore and Evermore, fans have taken to showering Taylor with minutes of applause and cheers after her performance of Champagne Problems.
As mentioned, it literally happens at literally every show, so quite why she seems so surprised whenever it starts is a bit of a mystery, but hey, it’s a moment of joy for everyone concerned so who are we to be cynical?
Following Friday’s ovation, an emotional Taylor disclosed that her parents were in the crowd, to yet more cheers.
tay after the champagne problems applause 🥹 “i guarantee my parents were just recording that on their phones.. so anytime i’m having a sad or a bad day, not only will i play the video in my mind, but i’m gonna revisit that moment a lot - thank you so much for doing that” pic.twitter.com/W6kO4ynO9U — kaia (@kaiamal13) August 16, 2024
“ I know I was recording a video of that in my head of that, but I guarantee my parents were just recording that on their phones,” she shared.
“Everytime I have a sad or bad day from now not only will I have the video in my mind but I’m going to revisit that moment.”
Fans have started growing even more convinced that Reputation (Taylor’s Version) is within reach
🚨| Taylor Swift did a "20" with her hand instead of "22" during "22" where she usually does "22" using her hands but did "20" at today's show instead of "22"! #LondonTSTheErasTour pic.twitter.com/Tb9pvA7Bqx — Taylor Swift Eras Tour Updates (@QueenSwiftie_13) August 17, 2024
During her performance of 22 on Saturday, fans noticed that Taylor appeared to be gesturing to the number “20” rather than 22, the age described in the song.
Of course, the last of Taylor’s Wembley Stadium shows falls on 20 August, which has led many Swifties to think there could be an announcement coming on Tuesday night about the latest of her album re-releases.
She also left the stage with an intriguing gesture on Saturday night
We all know Taylor loves dropping subtle clues and “Easter eggs” about her upcoming projects, so when she descended into the stage while making a snaking gesture with her hands, it led to even more speculation about the re-release of Reputation.

taylor did the snake gesture twice!!! and one of them was during CAUSE YOU GOT TIRED OF MY SCHEMING!!!! pic.twitter.com/s3u5yzEs9B — Taylor Throwbacks (@ThrowbackTaylor) August 18, 2024
Other surprise songs from the weekend also point to Reputation
As well as Ed Sheeran’s cameo appearance , Thursday night’s show featured a performance of King Of My Heart, and the presence of two Reputation tracks on the same night led Swifties to think the star might be teasing something with her acoustic set.
Saturday night’s show also included a third Reputation cut, I Did Something Bad, which she performed on the acoustic guitar.

Raise your hand if you feel personally victimized by Taylor playing I Did Something Bad and not announcing rep tv. pic.twitter.com/i4J7cmIvXC — Amanda Orr (@amandakokesh) August 17, 2024
But some fans noticed there could have been another reason behind her performance of I Did Something Bad
I Did Something Bad is one of the Reputation cuts that sees Taylor more explicitly reflecting on her public persona, following her much-publicised fall-out with Kanye West and his then-wife Kim Kardashian that led her to take an extended break from the spotlight.
After blocking Ye’s latest album from the top spot with a re-release of her Tortured Poets Department album last week, some began to wonder if she deliberately chose I Did Something Bad to send a message to the controversial rapper.
after blocking a certain artist’s album from going no. 1, changing “thanK you aIMee” to “thank You aimeE,” and doing “london boy” / “dear john” as surprise songs… taylor swift the icon you are https://t.co/OE9FTNfUw3 — sam olson (@astoldbysno) August 17, 2024
As we’ve come to expect, there were plenty of of famous guests in attendance on Friday and Saturday night
Among them were Sharon Osbourne, former Taylor collaborator Florence Welch, various stars from the TV series The Vampire Diaries and activist Malala Yousafzai, who revealed on Instagram the Eras tour was her first ever concert experience.
