Best things to do on hawaii island.

The youngest and largest Hawaiian island is the story of Hawaii’s creation – literally.

Millenia younger than its sister islands, Hawaii Island – known as the Big Island – continues to grow as molten lava pours forth and adds to this awe-inspiring island.

The island’s youth offers a rare chance to experience a different kind of Hawaii. Visitors to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on our  tour  can view an active, smoldering crater; and learn how these volcanoes gave birth to Hawaii. The isle’s black sand beaches are the color of cooled lava, and are common nesting sites for sea turtles.

As primeval as the volcanoes are, there are also contemporary pleasures. Sweet papayas, aromatic coffees, and exotic florals are all grown on the Big Island, where the rich volcanic soil offer fertile grounds for island agriculture. The island’s excellent ocean waters are wonderful for fishing, sailing, diving and swimming with graceful manta rays. You can enjoy the beauty of Rainbow Falls, delight in locally made sweets, and explore fascinating historic sites including the birthplace of King Kamehameha I. Enjoy many of the Big Island’s most famous attractions on our  Hawaii Grand Circle Island Tour .

Hawaii Island is as powerful, wondrous, and real as life itself. May your visit be the same.

Every year, more than 10,000 humpback whales migrate 3,000 miles from Alaska to breed and raise their calves in the warm waters of Hawaii. Seeing the whales frolicking in the ocean (or hearing their magical song) is an awe-inspiring experience that attracts people from all over the world.

While whales can be spotted throughout the entire state, they are often seen swimming around the Island of Hawaii (also known as the Big Island).

So, if you’re traveling to the Big Island and want to see these majestic creatures for yourself, then there are several whale watching opportunities you can choose from. Whether it’s from the sun deck of a boat or the sun-kissed shores of the coast, here are some of the best Big Island whale watching experiences.

Big Island Whale Watching FAQs

When is the big island whale watching season.

On the Big Island, most whale watching tours run from December to March. This is when the whale population is the largest, so there’s a strong chance of seeing them in the ocean (along with their babies!).

However, whales don’t migrate all at once. Depending on the year, they can be spotted in Hawaii as early as September and as late as May! Because the season is so flexible, some tours will start earlier or run later than the typical December to March season. Official whale counts occur throughout this time, so you can keep tabs on these numbers to figure out the best time to see them.

What time of day is best for whale watching on the Big Island?

One of the best things about whale watching in Hawaii is that it’s possible to see them at any hour of the day. They are always active, so you can choose a tour that fits your schedule.

With that in mind, we personally prefer tours that start in the morning. There are generally fewer boats out on the water (smaller crowds!), and the lighting is great for snapping photos of the whales. The trade winds are also much calmer, so those prone to seasickness will enjoy smooth sailing on a morning tour.

Weather-wise, it is also much cooler in the early morning. While afternoon trips can be nice, it can get really hot if you’re out in the direct sun for hours.

What month is best for whale watching on the Big Island?

Of course, the best time for whale watching is when you have the highest chance of seeing whales. This is usually when the population is the highest around the islands.

These numbers are decided by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Every January, February, and March, they conduct official whale counts on Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island to determine how many whales there are in the ocean.

Peak season usually falls sometime between December and March , although the exact date changes year by year. For example, the whale population was the highest in 2023 during the month of March. But in 2022, the most whales were found in the waters in January.

Learn more about the best time for whale watching in Hawaii and visiting Hawaii in the Winter .

What is the best place to see whales from the shore on the Big Island?

A whale watching boat tour is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures. However, you don’t need to go out on a boat or be out on the water to see them. There are lots of places around the Big Island where you can see them directly from the shore.

The sacred Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site on the Kohala Coast is one of the best places for whale watching . The name itself should give you a clue, as Puʻukoholā literally translates to “Hill of the Whale.”

Further up the coast is Kapa’a Beach Park, another great whale watching site. And if you’re on the east side, you can head to Hilo Bay to possibly see them swimming in the calm waters.

While it is possible to see whales from the coast, a boat tour increases the chances of spotting them, as you can get closer to the pods (but not too close, as we’ll discuss a little later!). It never hurts to hang out at some of the best beaches on the island and see if you spot any whales.

How much is a whale watching tour on the Big Island?

The cost of a whale watching tour varies from company to company. However, we’ve found that they generally cost anywhere from $100 to $180 per person on the Big Island. Some companies offer discounted rates for children, while others have a flat per person rate.

If you want to charter a private boat, then you can expect to shell out several thousand dollars for the tour. It’s not the cheapest excursion on the Big Island, although it can be a memorable experience if you want a personalized trip or if you’re traveling with large groups.

Is a whale watching tour worth it on the Big Island?

To be honest, the Big Island isn’t the best place in Hawaii for whale watching. Even in peak season, it’s possible that you might not see any activity on your tour. If whale watching is a big priority for you, then we recommend going to Maui instead, as it has more recorded sightings than any other island in Hawaii.

That being said, a whale watching tour is probably your best chance to see them on the Big Island. And it’s always a fun experience to be out on a boat. We’ve really enjoyed the tours that we’ve done here, but it’s important to have the expectation that whale sightings aren’t guaranteed.

The 6 Best Big Island Whale Watching Tours

Choosing a whale watching tour can be a challenging task, as the options are as vast as the ocean itself. But we’ve picked out a few of our favorites to help narrow down your choices.

Keep in mind that state and federal regulations require boats to stay 100 yards away from the whales . For this reason, most tours will head to an area and then turn off their engine so as not to disturb the whales. While they can’t approach whales, you might find that whales may choose to approach the boat, which can be a very thrilling experience if it happens!

1. Hawaii Adventures Kona

This 2.5 to 3-hour whale watching tour with Hawaii Adventures Kona departs from the Honokohau Marina on the Kona Coast. Because the tour is US Coast Guard offshore certified, the boat can access both near-shore and pelagic zones. So not only will you get to see humpback whales, but you might also get the chance to see other breeds too, like pilot whales, beaked whales, sperm whales, spotted dolphins, and whale sharks.

There will also be a marine naturalist on board to answer any questions you may have about the sea life. You can even listen to the underwater whale song through a hydrophone, which is an extraordinary experience on its own.

The 20 passenger boat has a shaded cabin as well as an open-air back deck for viewing. It’s also nice that they guarantee that you’ll see a whale or dolphin on your cruise. If not, you’ll get a promotion code to book another tour for 50% off.

They have boats leaving at 7 AM, 11 AM, and 3 PM, but on different days of the week. Check their calendar if you’re hoping to book a certain time slot.

Big Island whale watching - Hawaiian Adventures Kona

2. Captain Zodiac

If you want a small, intimate whale watching tour, then Captain Zodiac is one of the best options on the Big Island. The raft only takes a maximum of 16 passengers so that everyone can have a front-row seat to all the marine life action!

Compared to other boats, the raft is fast, and the ride is rather bouncy. Pregnant women or people with back problems are not advised to join. The raft also doesn’t have a shaded canopy, so keep that in mind if you don’t want to be in direct sunlight for 3 hours.

Tours are conducted by a marine naturalist who will be sharing information as you navigate the open waters. In addition to whales and other creatures like dolphins and sea turtles, the captain will also take you to sea caves and lava tubes (if conditions allow).

Captain Zodiac operates three tours a day (morning, afternoon, and sunset) and boats depart from the Honokohau Marina on the Kona Coast.

Big Island whale watching - Captain zodiac power raft

3. Adventure X

We took this exhilarating whale watching tour with Adventure X a couple of years ago and loved it so much. It’s a small group tour (20 people max) onboard an inflatable power raft with padded seats, shade, an upper viewing deck, and a bathroom!

Tours leave from Puako Bay, so this is a great option if you’re staying near the Kohala Coast. Guided by an onboard marine naturalist, you’ll be taken to areas where you can see the whales breaching, swimming, nursing, or even competing with each other.

There are two morning tours to choose from – one at 8 AM and the other at 10:30 AM. The entire trip lasts for 2 hours, and snacks and cold drinks are provided along the way.

4. Kona Snorkel Trips

Can’t decide between a whale watching tour and a historical sightseeing trip? With this guided tour by Kona Snorkel Trips , you don’t have to choose!

Hop aboard this inflatable power raft and enjoy a day exploring some of the most fascinating historical attractions on the island. Hear stories about ancient Hawaiian culture as you pass by Ali’i Drive, Holua Slide, and the grounds of the Battle of Kuamo’o in Keauhou.

But don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for five different species of whales, including the migrating humpbacks. And because the boat takes 18 passengers, this is a great experience to enjoy the scenery in a small group setting.

Tours depart from the Honokohau Harbor in Kona at 7:30 in the morning and last approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. And don’t be fooled by the tour company name. Although Kona Snorkel Trips is mainly known for its snorkel tours, this whale watching tour is purely for sightseeing, so you won’t be going into the ocean.

Big Island whale watching - whale tail

5. Sunlight on Water

Sunlight on Water offers a picturesque whale watching tour aboard their custom-built 40-foot vessel. It’s a larger boat so there are more passengers (capped at 24 people), but it’s a much smoother ride compared to the power rafts. There’s even a bathroom and a warm, fresh-water shower on board (which you probably won’t need since you won’t be going into the water)!

Leaving from Honokohau Marina in Kona, the onboard marine naturalist will share information about the gentle whales that you see splashing in the ocean. And they’ll even dip the hydrophone into the water so you can hear their majestic song.

But mamma and baby humpbacks aren’t the only creatures you’ll get to see during your visit. Sea turtles and dolphins are also commonly spotted in the area.

At the moment, Sunlight on Water only operates one whale watching tour a day at 11:30 AM.

Big Island whale watching - whale watching from a boat

6. Kona Ocean Adventures

The folks at Kona Ocean Adventures also operate a nice tour out to see the humpback whales. While you’re out on the ocean, you’ll get to learn all about their migrating, mating, and breeding habits (guides on the boat are incredibly knowledgeable about all things whales).

As with other tours, they also have an onboard hydrophone so you can hear them communicate with each other underwater.

Kona Ocean Adventures offers two different morning tours each day of the week. You can choose to leave on the 7 AM cruise or the 9:30 AM cruise. If neither of these times suits you (or if you simply want a VIP experience) they also offer private chartered whale watching tours . Light refreshments and snacks are provided.

Whale Watching on the Big Island Tips

Before setting sail, there are a few must-know tips to make your whale watching experience as memorable as possible.

  • Book a tour with guaranteed whale sightings. Whales are wild animals, so it can be hard to predict where they’ll be or when they’re the most active. For this reason, there’s always a chance that you might not see them during your tour. This can be a huge disappointment, especially considering that whale watching tours are not cheap. Therefore, we recommend booking a tour that offers guaranteed whale sightings. On the off-chance that you don’t see any during your trip, the company will let you go on another boat tour for free (or at a discounted price).
  • Go on a whale watching tour at the beginning of your trip. If you choose a company that offers guaranteed sightings and don’t see any whales on your tour, then your excursion will need to be rescheduled for a later date. But if you book a tour towards the end of your trip, you might not be able to take advantage of the rebooking. So, make sure to go at the beginning of your trip just in case you don’t see whales the first time and need to go again!
  • Opt for a morning tour. Although you can spot whales any time of the day, there are a few advantages of booking a morning tour. It’s generally less crowded (especially if you’re going for sunrise), and the waters are calmer since the tradewinds haven’t picked up yet. Weather-wise, mornings are also more pleasant since you won’t be sitting directly in the sun the entire time.
  • Pick the right vessel. As you can see, there are many types of boats that take passengers out to see the whales. The boat you choose can greatly impact your whale watching experience. Small, speedy power rafts are fun (our kids love them), but they aren’t suitable for pregnant women or people with injuries. Larger boats are slower and more crowded, but they can be more comfortable and affordable. At the end of the day, we recommend choosing a tour and vessel that fits your travel preferences and style.

Why Fair Wind Cruises?

We really enjoyed our snorkel cruise with Fair Winds. The staff are so fun and very intent on ensuring your comfort and safety. Both breakfast and lunch were very good. The snorkel spot we went to was wonderful. Very calm and clear water. Perfect spot for snorkeling. Eventhough we had quite a few people on the boat, there was plenty of room to spread out and plenty of room to snorkel without running into each other. We also went on the Manta Ray night snorkel with Fair Winds as well. They are a great outfit!

Tripadvisor Icon

Our family has been out with Fair Wind on numerous occasions over the years as it’s always the highlight of our vacation. The snorkeling is always fabulous, as is the crew and the wonderful food along the way. This time around was even better! To our delight, they did away with the traditional burgers and hot dogs – replacing everything with various plant-based sandwiches & salads.  BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich – OMG – so tasty – who would have thought?! Highly recommend, not just for the snorkeling – but the food is above and beyond.
Awesome cruise! Small group of people on the cruise, nice boat and comfortable seating. Two locations to snorkel, paddle boards, breakfast and lunch. Reef safe sunscreen even provided and coffee before boarding! Staff was so friendly, and the trip was one of the best things our family did in Kona. Highly recommend.
We have been coming to the Big Island for over a decade and often go snorkeling with Fairwinds. We have enjoyed the morning snorkeling cruise several times over the years with family our kids and grandkids, which has always been a highlight. We took the Deluxe Cruise last Thursday. Enjoyed a great show of spinner dolphins and even some pilot whales. Looking forward to our second snorkel on the morning cruise tomorrow.

At Body Glove we are fully committed to the principle of sustainability and all it entails. This idea is not only about what we do now, or what we have done in the past. It’s about striving to become more sustainable over time, examining and re-examining our processes to find new ways to reduce our impact on the environment.

What Sets Body Glove Apart from Other Tour Companies?

hawaii big island tours from kona

Body Glove Cruises Designated a Kuleana Green Business!

Body Glove Cruises is proud to be recognized as a Kuleana Green Business by the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. The Kuleana Green Business Program recognizes and honors businesses who promote environmental responsibility and implement sustainable business practices throughout Hawaii.

In Hawaiian, the word “kuleana” means responsibility. Businesses designated Kuleana Green are those who recognize and understand their responsibility to create and sustain positive environmental impacts within their communities. As businesses and individuals, they maintain high standards and a strong commitment to their communities and the world around them.

Extensive criteria must be met before being recognized as a Kuleana Green business, including environmental, social and economic sustainability. The business must prove responsible interaction with the environment that avoids depletion or degradation of natural resources, and their business model must allow for long-term environmental quality.

One way Body Glove Cruises implements their sustainability practices is by the elimination of plastic straws. Although small, plastic straws are seldom recycled. And while they make up a small percentage of ocean plastic, their small size makes them significant foes of marine animals. They are often consumed by fish and can become lodged in the nostrils of sea turtles. Body Glove Cruises uses only paper straws and educate their guests about not using plastic straws to help save the oceans.

According to the National Park Service, Americans alone use 500 million straws a day! Body Glove Cruises understands plastic straws are completely unnecessary and we don’t need straws to consume beverages.

Body Glove Cruises is also proud to be the only boat in the United States certified by the Green Restaurant Association. At Body Glove Cruises, we are passionate about sharing the natural beauty of Hawaii with visitors from around the world. Our company understands that their future success is dependent upon a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Top-Rated Kona Snorkel Trips, Boat Tours & Whale Watching in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii!

hawaii big island tours from kona

The Explorer snorkel trip is one for serious snorkelers. This is NOT a booze/party boat atmosphere, if you want that, get on the big catamaran. What you get instead is a small pontoon boat with 2 big outboards that flies over the water to sites the big boats can't access. You get to do 3 dives instead of 1, and there's no crowd in the water. We were the only boat in one of our stops. The crew were super friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable and customize the trip to the conditions and the divers desires. We also got a nice sandwich for lunch and saw dozens of pilot whales. We loved it.

Great cruise! The staff was wonderful, super helpful, and fabulous customer service. Everything that was advertised about the cruise was true and they also provided other water equipment for those who are not adept at snorkeling.

hawaii big island tours from kona

The ride was really smooth!I loved the wind in my hair; it was like a little mini blow-dry between snorkel stops, haha! It felt great on this warm day. It was really fun to have multiple places to explore in the water. Sitting on the side of the boat to enjoy the sunshine after each snorkel stop was so lovely. Lunch was great, and the staff could not have been any more kind and friendly. They had a great selection of craft soft drinks, water and coconut water that they offered us all day. I highly recommend the Body Glove snorkel trip for an unforgettable adventure and enjoyable boat ride along the beautiful Kona coast. It felt like we were out there all day, but still got back in time to have another activity planned or do some relaxing in the afternoon.

One of the best activities on the island for groups and families! We saw manta rays, dolphins, and flying fish. Great presentation from the staff naturalist. Sunset cruise with Hawaiian cultural speaker and local Hawaiian singer made it top notch for us.

Your Hawaii Island tour is split into two halves, as there’s just so much on the island to see! The first half begins outside the quaint town of Kailua-Kona, where you’ll see the historic Hulihe’e Palace, once the vacation home of the island’s royalty. You’ll then continue south to Magic Beach, where the sand sometimes simply disappears.

After that is Kahalu’u Beach, a perfect place for snorkelers, followed by the sacred Lekeleke Burial Grounds. Next, you’ll pass the remnants of Hikiau Heiau, an important religious site in ancient Hawaii. Past that is the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park for those looking to learn more about the island’s history.

Then you’ll see the Honaunau Rodeo Arena and learn all about Hawaii’s cowboys. Next up is Pebble Beach, where you’ll get to know the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele. You’ll also have the option to check out the Kula Kai Caverns, left by ancient volcanic activity.

Continuing on, you’ll reach the startling Punalu’u Beach, which features totally black sand! The route then passes an old sugar plantation, followed by the huge volcanoes Kilauea and Mauna Loa. This half of the tour concludes by Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can explore the island’s volcanoes up close.

The second half of the tour picks up farther to the east, in the picturesque town of Hilo. Then, cruise through the almost impossibly scenic Liliuokalani Park and Gardens.

Looking for surfers? You’ll find them catching waves next at Honoli’i Beach. After that is Onomea Bay, featuring a spectacular hiking trail with views that can’t be beaten. Then, admire the astonishing flora at the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden. Continuing on, you’ll arrive at the surprising sight of the Honohina Hongwanji Mission, a historic Buddhist temple.

You’ll then pass the Laupahoehoe Train Museum before reaching Laupahoehoe Point, a spectacular ocean vista. Don’t forget to snap some photos! Anyone hankering for a snack will definitely want to stop at the Hamakua Harvest Farmers Market before continuing on to the cowboy town of Waimea.

Up next on the Hawaii Island tour are a pair of great beaches: Hapuna Beach is the largest white sand beach on the island and Beach 69 is beloved by locals, so take your pick! Then you’ll arrive at the Kings Highway Foot Trail, where you’ll have the chance to see the ancient Waikoloa Petroglyphs. After that are another few scenic overlooks, followed by the beautiful Kekaha Kai State Park. Your tour concludes here, just north of where the first half began.

11 Things You Must Do in Kona Hawaii Before You Leave

I lived on the Big Island for a year, getting to know all the nooks and crannies. I was also a a travel agent for 4 years, putting itineraries together and helping clients not miss out on the best things to do at their destinations.

With those skills and experiences, I’ve put together this list of 11 things you must do in Kona!

1. Manta Ray Night Snorkel

My favorite must do activity in Kona is the manta ray night snorkel . These friendly giants come within inches of your face as they feast on plankton.

Tours out of Keauhou Bay have a short 5 min boat ride to the manta ray viewing so it’s less boat time and more snorkel time.

2. Whale Watching Tour

I never get tired of seeing the whales in Kona. While you can sometimes see them from shore, the best way view them is by a whale watching tour so you can see them up close!

There are different kinds of boats to take, some are more leisurely while others can be adventurous.

3. Kealakekua Bay Snorkel Tour

Snorkel tours to Kealakekua Bay start in Kona and are a good way to spend a morning. If you are in Hawaii you need to snorkel to appreciate a whole other world below the ocean’s surface, and Kealakekua Bay is known to be the best spot on the island.

I had so much fun seeing the dolphins and hearing parrotfish crunching on corral!

4. Sunset Dinner Cruise

Body Glove is the only company that offers a sunset dinner cruise in Kona . And boy howdy is it awesome!

Good food, live music, and romantic sunsets! What more could you want?!

It may be cliche, but I love going to luaus because I get a chance to try authentic Hawaiian foods prepared better than I could make at home and being surrounded by a festive atmosphere and entertained with hula dancer and fire knife dancers.

6. Aiopio Fish Trap

I consider this a hidden gem because people don’t talk about this beach much. But I love visiting the Aiopio Fish Trap because I have never NOT seen a green sea turtle here. Plus the white sand beach is sooooo long!

7. Get a Toe Ring

At Aloha Toe Rings in the Kona Inn Shopping Village you can get exceptional service finding a toe ring that fits. I loved their designs and the experience so much, I went twice – one toe ring for each foot!

8. Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm

My favorite Kona coffee farm to visit is Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee Farm . They have unique coffee roasts, delicious candy samples, and a pool to cool off in!

9. Ho’oulu Community Farmers Market

The best farmers market in Kona, in my opinion, is the Ho’oulu Community Farmers Market  next the Kona Outrigger. Friendly vendors, delicious food, and live music.

10. Foster’s Kitchen

The best meal I ever had on the Big Island was at Foster’s Kitchen . Their flatbread pizza had so much flavor and the cocktails were not skimpy on the alcohol.

Plus the view over Ali’i Drive and of the ocean was beautiful. Try to get there at sunset!

11. Ola Brew Co

Ola Brew Co has my second favorite cider EVER: Dragonfruit Lemonade Cider . It’s hot pink and refreshingly fruity.

They also serve many types of beer, hard seltzers, and hard teas as well as have a full kitchen for a meal.

And there you have it: my Kona must do list.

Did I miss anything?

Big Island Travel Planning Guide

Should I buy Hawaii travel insurance?

YES  - I recommend Travel Insurance Master because you can compare multiple options with one click. With plans starting at $5/day per person, why not give yourself piece of mind? Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Is it safe to rent a car on the Big Island?

YES - It’s totally safe to drive on the Big Island. And unless you plan to chill by the resort pool the entire time, renting a car is pretty much a necessity on the Big Island! Jeep rentals are popular . I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental , as they have some of the best prices around.

Will my phone work on the Big Island?

PROBABLY  - Most, if not all, cell providers work on the Big Island. However, be prepared for some dead spots in the more remote parts of the island. For example, I always lose service driving through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park .

What's the best way to book my Big Island accommodations?

For Big Island hotels,  Booking.com is amazing because you can often reserve your room with no money down. If you are looking for an Airbnb condo with a kitchen and more space, don’t forget to check VRBO  for potentially better prices and options.

What's the best site to buy Big Island flights?

I recommend looking at Skyscanner for finding cheap flights. Pro Tip : check if flying into Hilo is cheaper than flying into Kona.

Do I need a passport to visit Hawaii?

NO  - If you are a US citizen, you do not need a passport as Hawaii is part of the United States . If you are from out of the country, the same passport and visa requirements are the same as entering anywhere in the United States from your country.

What should I pack to the Big Island?

Pack for tropical weather but also prepare for colder than expected nights and early mornings, so a light sweatshirt is recommended. Check out this list of 5 Things Not to Forget to Pack .

It’s also cool that there’s palm frond thatched structure to remind you that you’re on ancient Hawaiian grounds.

Detailed Forecast

A low pressure system moving into the Central Pacific basin north of Hawaii will weaken the subtropical ridge and keep light to moderate trade winds in the forecast this week. An unstable environment will enhance shower activity across the Hawaii region through the weekend with the highest rainfall amounts favoring the windward and mountain areas. The potential for slow moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are growing from Friday into the weekend as a developing upper level low stalls out over the islands.

Weak upper level troughing will continue to enhance trade wind showers today. A low level cloud band, the remnants of an old East Pacific cold front, will drift through the islands on Thursday as an upper level trough digs into the Hawaii region from the north. A combination of the low level cloud band and upper level forcing from the upper trough will produce increasing wet weather trends across the state from Thursday onward. A weakening subtropical ridge north of the islands this week will keep light to moderate trade winds in the forecast through at least Sunday. Stronger winds aloft are creating warning level wind speeds over the Big Island summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea this morning, these strong winds may continue above advisory levels through tonight. A High Wind Warning was issued this morning for the highest summits on the Big Island. Elsewhere in the lower elevation areas, a hybrid sea breeze and trade wind pattern will develop along terrain sheltered leeward areas. The wind pattern changes again by this weekend, as an upper level low sets up directly over the islands producing a surface trough reflection over the islands and light to moderate east to southeasterly winds. A rather unstable weather pattern develops over the Hawaiian Islands in the latest model guidance from Friday through Sunday as the upper low deepens and stalls over the state. This pattern change may bring the potential for slow moving heavy rain showers and thunderstorms over some islands in the state. The heavy rain and thunderstorm impacts with this upper low will vary greatly depending upon the precise location where the low center sets up relative to each island. If the upper low moves in north and west of the island chain then the northwest islands of Kauai and Oahu would be under a higher rainfall threat levels. If the upper low sets up more over the south and east section of the state, then Maui County and the Big Island will see higher threats for heavy rain and thunderstorms. Rainfall coverage was increased and isolated thunderstorms were added to the forecast for this end of this week to account for more consistency in the run to run medium range forecast guidance. The threat for flash flooding over all islands is growing with time, however it remains too early to pin down the highest flood threat areas with a Flood Watch product. More island by island impacts will be revealed as the forecast time period grows shorter, and the upper low track with weather impacts evolve over time. Stay tuned.

Moderate trade winds will prevail across the island chain today, then ease up a bit tonight especially over the western islands. Low clouds and showers will continue to favor windward and mauka areas, with MVFR cigs/vsbys possible as showers move through. A stray shower may spill leeward at times, but predominantly VFR conditions are expected here. AIRMET Sierra remains in effect for windward sections of Kauai and Oahu. Conditions should improve here later this morning.

Fresh to strong trade winds will slowly ease through Wednesday as a 1030 mb high 1000 nm north northeast of the islands moves off to the northeast. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) remains in effect for the typically windy waters around the Big Island and Maui County through this afternoon and continues to look like it may be dropped by this evening as winds ease to moderate to locally fresh. A surface trough will form north of the state Wednesday. As this feature drifts southward near or over the islands Thursday into Saturday, the trade winds could ease further, and chances for heavy showers will likely increase. Near shore buoys are showing signs of fading energy in the 12 to 16 sec range suggesting the current south swell is slowly beginning to fade today into Wednesday. Forerunners from a larger and longer lived south- southwest swell will arrive Wednesday, and surf is expected rise near, or to, the High Surf Advisory level during the peak of the swell Thursday and Friday. This swell will gradually decline through the weekend. A small northwest swell of around 3 feet will peak today, then decline Wednesday. Wind- driven waves will gradually decline to around May average today, then drop to below average for the rest of the week.

HFO Watches/Warnings/Advisories

High Wind Warning until 6 PM HST this evening for Big Island Summits. Small Craft Advisory until 6 PM HST this evening for Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island Leeward Waters, Big Island Southeast Waters.

We shopped around campervan companies on the Big Island and we are very happy with our choice! Dug outfits his vans very well, gives renters a nice digital map of spots, and is very generous, flexible, and responsive. We would totally rent from him again!
