First Look | Star Trek: Prodigy - Season 2, Episode 1

Admiral Janeway is about to take the former crew of the U.S.S. Protostar under her wing on a real Starfleet ship!

Star Trek: Prodigy  creators Kevin and Dan Hageman revealed an extended first look at the second season's premiere episode this weekend.

Commenting on the exclusive clip, the Hagemans shared, "Our talented and dedicated  Star Trek: Prodigy  team is hard at work on Season 2 and all of us can’t wait for the world to see it. It’s just too good.”

In the clip, the former crew of the  U.S.S. Protostar  and now warrant Starfleet officers in training — Dal, Rok-Tak, Zero, Jankom Pog, and Murf — are reunited for an internship under the command of Admiral Janeway. They soon meet The Doctor, a dear friend of Janeway, who escorts them to the admiral's new ship. Starfleet has asked Janeway to observe a new wormhole to deem if it poses a threat — the very wormhole they created when they self-destructed the  Protostar .

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix outside of markets including Canada where it is available on CTV.ca and the CTV App, France on France Televisions channels and Okoo, in Iceland on Sjonvarp Simans Premium, as well as on SkyShowtime in the Nordics, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Central and Eastern Europe. Star Trek: Prodigy is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - What We Know So Far

Dal looking excited

"Star Trek: Prodigy" is the latest in a long line of excellent "Star Trek" shows, and a markedly different animated take on the sci-fi franchise than the comedic " Star Trek: Lower Decks ." It's also the first major "Star Trek" show that focuses on a bunch of complete space voyage amateurs, who stumble upon a mysterious Starfleet ship called U.S.S. Protostar, and use it to escape their less than ideal living conditions as miners on Tars Lamora.

Due to the fact that the show begins in the incredibly distant and dangerous Delta Quadrant of the galaxy, the early episodes of "Prodigy" have plenty of world-building to do for a "Star Trek" show, and it'll be interesting to see how the show progresses over the course of multiple seasons. Of course, in order to do that, the show actually needs to have more than one season. Will "Star Trek: Prodigy" become a multi-season phenomenon, or is it destined to remain a one-season wonder? Here's what we know about Season 2 of "Star Trek: Prodigy."

What's the release date of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

" Star Trek: Prodigy " will indeed get a second season, and what's more, it might arrive sooner than you think. The first season's mid-season finale is only beginning to loom on the horizon, but its numbers have been impressive enough that Paramount+ has already confirmed Season 2 is incoming, according to Deadline . This, of course, is a pretty tantalizing prospect for Trekkies who don't like to wait for too long between seasons.

Considering that the Season 1 mid-season finale airs on November 18, and the back half of the ten-episode season starts airing on January 6, 2022, The season won't end until February 2022. Since Season 2 will reportedly drop at some point in 2022, this means fans should have far less than a year to wait for it.

It's highly unlikely that the seasons will air back to back, so you probably shouldn't expect "Star Trek: Prodigy" Season 2 before summer 2022 at the very earliest. If Paramount+ intends to follow the first season's evidently successful footprints, it would make sense to air the season premiere at roughly the same time of year. As such, the most logical release date of the new season would be in October 2022.

Who's in the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

We still don't know which characters survive the events of "Star Trek: Prodigy" Season 1, or whether someone jumps ship to explore a particularly interesting planet. As it stands, though, it's pretty easy to wager that Brett Gray's Dal R'EI is the lynchpin of the series going forward, thanks to his role as the closest thing the U.S.S. Protostar has to a captain, and his mysterious origins. Ella Purnell's Vau N'Akat youngster, Gwyn, also seems like she'll be around for a while, which means that his father, the evil Diviner (voiced by John Noble), might also continue to grace the show with his devious attempts to capture the main characters' mysterious starship with the fearsome Drednok (Jimmi Simpson).

Though it's always possible that the first season will feature a tragic death or departure, it would also be pretty surprising if Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazragui), Zero (Angus Imrie), Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas), and Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) wouldn't be around in Season 2. As with Season 1, you can probably expect so see plenty of high-profile celebrities in fun recurring or guest roles, as well.

One of the greatest characters in "Star Trek: Prodigy" is, of course, the hologram version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the main character of "Star Trek: Voyager." The AI version of the character is a snarky, yet ever-present and helpful mentor figure to the main characters, which is great ... but also somewhat worrying, considering the fate such characters tend to suffer as the story progresses, and as the heroes learn to get by on their own. Hopefully, Hologram Janeway "lives" to see Season 2, but don't be surprised if this doesn't turn out to be the case.

What's the plot of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

Since Season 1 is still ongoing, there's no way to know where the sophomore season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" intends to take things. Provided that the show doesn't plan to deviate from its premise too much, it's probably safe to say that the U.S.S. Protostar will continue its turbulent journey from the remote  Delta Quadrant to  Alpha Quadrant . Since the majority of the most famous "Star Trek" civilizations hang around in the Alpha and Beta quadrants, it's likely that the motley crew of main characters will run into more and more familiar faces as their journey progresses — think humans, Romulans, Klingons, and the like.

Due to the show's concept of starting where no man has gone before and boldly working the way back, you can probably expect the characters to bump into plenty of classic "Star Trek" civilizations as their journey progresses.

Star Trek Prodigy

The future Star Trek : Prodigy has been solidified.

Paramount+ has handed out a speedy renewal for the animated kids show that was originally developed for Nickelodeon. The series, which premiered Oct. 28, had what the streamer is calling the top-performing premiere day out of any originally animated kids series on the platform. (Paramount+, like other streamers, does not release specific viewership data.)

Prodigy was the brainchild of Star Trek captain Alex Kurtzman, whose intention with the series was to bring in new fans of the franchise at a young age while creating content that appeals to everyone in the family. Prodigy marks the return of Kate Mulgrew as Kathryn Janeway in a bid to appeal to Trekkie parents who may be watching the show with their children.

In an interview pegged to Prodigy ’s launch, Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins — who originally bought the show for Nickelodeon and continues to program kids content for the streamer — outlined plans for how the animated kids show could pave the way for a new feature film chapter in the Star Trek universe.

While the series only launched Oct. 28, Robbins and Kurtzman are already developing other such ideas connected to the world of the show as a kids- and family-focused version of Prodigy  that includes a feature film designed to bow theatrically as well as other live-action features that could live alongside the Paramount Pictures’ J.J. Abrams-produced  mystery  Star Trek  movie .

“We’re working on several fronts and obviously Alex is the key for the franchise [on Paramount+]. J.J. has been the keeper of the franchise on the film side. We hope that as a company that we do what’s right for the franchise altogether,” Robbins told THR last month.

Prodigy  is the fifth show in the Kurtzman  Star Trek  universe and joins  Picard , adult-focused animated entry Lower Decks , flagship  Discovery  and the upcoming  Strange New Worlds  at Paramount+, the exclusive home of the franchise. Brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman ( Hotel Transylvania , The Lego Movie ) created Prodigy, which targets kids 6-11 and follows a group of lawless teens searching for adventure.

Prodigy is from CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, the recently launched animation arm of CBS Studios; Nickelodeon Animation Studio, Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Exec producers include Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. The Hageman brothers and Ben Hibon also exec produce.

New episodes of Prodigy will continue to stream weekly through Nov. 18, which marks the midseason finale. The series returns Jan. 6 with the second half of season one. The 10-episode second part of season one will debut later next year at a date to be determined.

Work On ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2 Has Been Completed

season 2 star trek prodigy

| December 13, 2023 | By: Anthony Pascale 9 comments so far

This week brings another big Star Trek production update with news that the second season of the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy is now done and awaiting its debut on Netflix in 2024.

Prodigy season 2 is ready for Netflix

Today the creators and executive producers of Star Trek: Prodigy announced they had wrapped up work on the series. In a post on Twitter/X, Dan and Kevin Hageman revealed they just mixed the season 2 finale, adding a message about how five years of their lives went into the series and expressing their pride in the team. They posted a picture of the mixing board and members of the team along with Dan Hageman, director Ben Hibon, composer Nami Melumad, and co-executive producer Aaron Waltke.

Just mixed our final episode of #StarTrekProdigy S2. Five incredible years of our lives have gone into Prodigy, and we could not be more proud of the work from our amazing team. May this series inspire and welcome all into the Star Trek Universe. S1 on #Netflix this Christmas! pic.twitter.com/Y0L4szLqDs — Dan & Kevin Hageman (@brothershageman) December 13, 2023

The Hagemans also made a note to point fans to Netflix, which will start streaming all 20 episodes of the first season on Christmas Day. The animated series about a group of alien teens who find adventure when they discover an abandoned Starfleet ship (along with a hologram version of Captain Janeway) has not been available for streaming since it was removed by Paramount+ in June. At that time CBS Studios (who produces the show with Nickelodeon) was quick to confirm that work on the second season would continue as they searched for a new home for the show. Writing for the second season wrapped in early 2022 and voice work and much of the animation had already been completed by the time Paramount+ removed the show in the summer of 2023. That work is now done, including scoring and editing all 20 episodes.

In October, it was announced Netflix had picked up the show. The second season will debut on Netflix in 2024, but the streamer has not yet provided details on when or if they will split up the 20 episodes into 2 or more releases. There is also some hope that if things go well on Netflix, the show could continue. This morning, Aaron Waltke followed up his own tweet about wrapping up work on season 2 with a message about remaining hopeful regarding the future of the series.

For those asking, I remain hopeful for the future, and proud of what we accomplished so far. Be sure to watch Season One this Christmas! 🖖 — Aaron J. Waltke (@GoodAaron) December 13, 2023

In an interview with TrekMovie over the summer (before the Netflix deal was officially announced), Waltke made it clear that even though the show was removed from Paramount+, it was not “cancelled” and “there’s nothing preventing them from paying for more episodes” beyond season 2. At the STLV convention in August, Kevin Hageman also expressed his hopes for the show’s future , saying, “My master hope, I want the show picked up. I want a season 3. I want season 3 to set up an animated film series.”

For now, we await the return of the first season on December 25 on Netflix. Hopefully around then there will be an official confirmation about when season 2 will debut. A  clip for season 2  was released over the summer revealing the return of Robert Picardo as The Doctor, now taking over duties of managing the former crew of the USS Protostar as they join Admiral Janeway on the USS Voyager-A and her mission to find Chakotay.

Love this show! Detest the shortsighted cubicle climbers at P+ for not seeing that Trek is the largest property they have – in all its incarnations. Trek will still be there long after they are gone and back on LinkedIn looking for a new job. The whole move showed a lack of respect for something that has spanned decades.

I love seeing the UHD in that filename… needs some HDR too ;) Despite already watched Season 1, I’m tempted to load it up on Netflix so that they at least get an extra viewer number there! I would love more than two seasons!

Definitely watch Season One when it appears on Netflix. Those views matter most

Exactly, it is a must, Prodigy must move forward, they need our support/views for Season 3.

Not sure I will actually watch it (time is at a premium these days), but put it on and let it play in the background while I am doing other things? Absolutely. Probably more than once.

I love me some LDS but for me Prodigy is the standout Trek of the modern era. Incredible storytelling that all ages can enjoy. Breathtaking stuff.

Great to hear! Can wait to see the Voyager A in all her greatness!

I bet its coming out sooner than people think. Before Discovery season 5 even.

I honestly couldn’t get past the juvenile tone of the pilot, but understand that it got lots better after that, and am happy that I’ll have another chance to give this show another chance in ten days.

Netflix has announced that it will be saving the short-lived Paramount+ series Star Trek: Prodigy, which recently had its second renewal order scrapped. After shopping the project, Netflix has announced it’ll soon be the new streaming home for both season 1 in 2023 and season 2 in 2024.

Aimed at younger audiences, Star Trek: Prodigy is one of many Star Trek shows (or at least was) produced exclusively for Paramount+ and what was then called CBS All Access.

20 episodes of the series have aired thus far, with season 1 being released across two parts. Season 1, part 2, was released on Paramount+ between October 2021 and February 2022, while part 2 dropped weekly between October 2022 and December 2022.

Created by Kevin & Dan Hageman, the 3D animated series followed a motley crew of young aliens finding themselves living aboard an abandoned Starfleet ship. Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Rylee Alazraqui, Dee Bradley Baker, Jimmi Simpson, John Noble, and Kate Mulgrew lent their voices to the series.

In June 2023, Paramount+ joined other streamers like Disney in purging some of its content from the platform, including the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy . In addition, it reversed the season 2 renewal order. That season was already deep into production, and reports at the time suggested that it would be allowed to be shopped to other networks.

Season 2 will be released exclusively on Netflix in 2024

Fast forward to today, and Netflix has announced it’ll be the new home for both season 1, which will drop in late 2023 (keep an eye on our coming soon section for more), and will also exclusively launch season 2 at some point in 2024.

On October 11th, Netflix Tweeted :

“Star Trek: Prodigy is coming to Netflix! Season 1 of the animated series launches onto Netflix later this year while a brand new Season 2 is slated to debut in 2024”

In a joint statement on Alex Kurtzman’s social pages, they thank the fans of the show and state that “they can’t wait to share it [season 2] with the amazing fans around the world.”

star trek prodigy statement on revival

Statement by Alex Kurtzman and Dan & Kevin Hageman on the Star Trek: Prodigy revival

Aaron J. Waltke, a producer and screenwriter on Star Trek: Prodigy , posted shortly following the announcement with the hashtag “WeSavedStarTrekProdigy,” saying:

“At last, we can share the news… Star Trek: Prodigy has landed! Our show is beyond thrilled to be joining NETFLIX for the ongoing adventures of the Protostar crew. Star Trek fans across the galaxy — and young cadets in the making — have been granted the chance to see our series, many for the very first time. With a truly global audience, it is an extraordinary opportunity to grow our already formidable fanbase. It is in no small part thanks to you, the fandom — who demonstrated through your extraordinary efforts that the stories of Starfleet, and the outsiders who aspire to it, will endure. We are so deeply humbled and grateful beyond words. Many on the Prodigy team, including myself and the Hagemans, have created some exceptional television with Netflix — and we very much look forward to doing so again. The possibilities are endless now that the world can see all 40 episodes of Prodigy’s first and second seasons in one place which our passionate cast and crew have worked so tirelessly on – with the potential for more as we boldly go and seek out this new horizon. If you wish to see more Dal and Gwyn and Rok-Tahk and Zero and Jankom and Murf, viewing the show on Netflix as soon as it drops – and telling others the good news, to do the same — is unequivocally the way. There’s not much more to say. Other than… Go fast. Spread the word. Together… …We Saved Star Trek: Prodigy. Set a course for home.”

This is part of a recent strategy shift from Paramount Global, which has been much keener on licensing titles, to places like Netflix. Earlier in 2023, we saw them shop Ripley to Netflix, which was originally due to be released on Showtime. That’s in addition to other licensing, such as Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber being licensed in the US in October 2023 after being yanked from Paramount+.

On the kid’s side, we’ve also seen them license some of its Nickelodeon content to the service in recent years and work on a brand new Original Spongebob movie scheduled for 2024. We also see Nickelodeon titles arrive exclusively on Netflix from the 2019 output deal that includes the Erin & Aaron, slated for a November release .

At one point, Netflix was streaming home to the majority of older Star Trek shows. It had the complete collection of Deep Space Nine , Voyager, Enterprise, The Next Generation , and even The Animated Series for a period of time, but they slowly departed throughout 2021 and into 2022 .

Internationally, Netflix was also the distributor for Star Trek: Discovery until late 2021, when the first three seasons (marked as Netflix Originals) were unceremoniously removed , with all future seasons exclusive to Paramount+.

Star Trek: Prodigy is down but by no means out.

In the wake of news that Paramount+ is reversing its renewal of the animated offshoot , exec producer Aaron J. Waltke is confirming our report that all Season 2 episodes will be completed and the search for a new home is underway.

“I have noticed some misleading headlines,” the EP shared on Twitter , “so all I can do is [reiterate that] we are completing Season 2 on schedule and seeking a new home!”

Paramount+ also noted that Prodigy ‘s inaugural 19-episode will be removed from its library “shortly.” Meanwhile, Par+ maintains that it remains committed to its upcoming slate of  Star Trek  projects, including the YA-targeted  Starfleet Academy  and the movie event  Star Trek: Section 31 .

Prodigy was one of four shows axed Friday at Paramount+, joining The Game, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies and Queen of the Universe .

The numbers on season 1 must be abysmal for it to be better for them to remove it from P+ completely for the tax write off. Glad they are going to shop season 2 around.

Amazon license a lot of Trek shows for international audiences. They should grab this one too.

I don’t think there can be a tax write-off if they (or CBS?) are shopping it around?

This was the most baffling of the cancellations and deletions for sure. No one is going to remember or care about Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies in three years, but this is Star Trek. People are still going to be watching Prodigy in 20 or 50 years. I don’t understand why any studio or creator would want to work with a streaming service at this point – this kind of treatment is such a slap in the face for the hundreds of people who work on these shows.

It’s even weirder when you factor in that Star Trek is owned internally by CBS/Paramount so it’s not like they have to pay licensing fees, etc.

Paramount Plus is a different company under the CBS/Paramount believe it or not but they do have to pay licensing fees to Paramount…. same like Disney and “HBO” Max got to pay licensing fees on al the content of their streaming service… it’s weird but that is how this works. Licensing fees need to paid on everything no matter if they own the content like all streaming services are sub companies (apart of Netflix)

Well they are also intergarating showtime but this baffles me as they mix old and new and one of the best episodes was episode 6 where they had an all star voice cast of Star Trek series reprise there Roles and they also used unused dialogue of Leonard Nimoy and James Doohan for Spock and scottie

If you think about it, all the cancelations this year have been a slap in the face to not only the people that worked on it, but to us the viewers. I agree with you about being hesitant to work with a streaming service now. The way that both “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” & “Star Trek: Prodigy” have been treated is just plain awful, especially when both franchises are proven successes. It sounds like they weren’t given enough time to build an audience. I think the creators of these shows have a right to be angry. Don’t you think?

Couldn’t agree more-and don’t forget there’s the whole “you’re renewed,no you’re not” nonsense to deal with. The streamers are utterly destroying their credibility and ability to function in the future to save a few pennies today.

Are they? Are Trek fans really going to enjoy this? No, they’re not. Because it’s not for them.

As a Star Trek fan, who’s watched every episode and movie, you are wrong. This is absolutely for us, as well as new fans. Case in point: “Kobayashi,” and “All the World’s a Stage” are very much love letters to Star Trek as a whole, which are very enjoyable. And many of the one-off stories are very much in line with what we saw in older shows, albeit more accessible to younger viewers.

I do get it, not every show will appeal to everyone, and it’s fine if that’s the case for you here. But at the same time, just because you don’t like a show doesn’t mean that no fan will enjoy it.

I don’t like that they are dumping prodigy. I liked and one of the reasons I subscribe to Paramount Plus is for Star Trek not Showtime.

I’m always sickened by news of a show that was renewed and then getting cancelled, even in cases which don’t affect me. But when it’s a show I love, like I did with Star Trek: Prodigy, it’s a lot more painful.

This show did such a good job of appealing to both new viewers and long-time viewers. They walked the line between serialized stories and more traditional episodic stories, and was always engaging. I really hope for the best as they search for a new home for the show. It absolutely deserves it.

Also, I hope they release the rest of the episodes on Blu-Ray.

Prodigy deserves better!

I didn’t Watch Prodigy when it first aired. Once I got past the first 5 shows, I was able to watch it. This is the first Star Trek series ever canceled before the end of season 3 even TOS from the 1960’s lasted 3 seasons!

Not true. TAS was cancelled after 22 episodes, which while counted as two seasons per the contract, was not even enough episodes to be a single full season back then for most shows.

Short sighted decision to cancel Star Trek Prodigy. Makes me doubt Paramount’s commitment to Star Trek. And that ticks me off considering all the money Star Trek has made for Paramount!

So much for P+ being the home of all things Trek

While I think the cancellation sucks *insert expletives*, I’m not too worried about it. As for shopping it around, it’s quite obviously a no-brainer and should find a new home. And even if it doesn’t, as long as Legacy springs from it’s demise, I’m good. Would happily prefer Prodigy over Academy and Section 31 though.

Both “Grease: The Rise of the Pink Ladies & “Star Trek: Prodigy” deserve better.

I go all the way back to TOS, remember watching it as a kid, have loved just about all things Trek since then. I just couldn’t get into Lower Decks, but when I started to watch Prodigy I thought, here’s something special! I can’t believe it’s been cancelled. I hope it finds a new home so we can watch season 2 and maybe even season 3?

Once again Paramount makes the Lunkhead move. Will they never learn? Didnt the entire franchise start out this way? Prodigy has got to be one of the best offerings currently out there for Star Trek. It’s designed for the youthful, but attracts all of us old timers. Grow a brain and maybe a little bit of a heart and reverse this idocy?

I was stunned by the news of this cancellation. I have seen every ST series & Prodigy was one of the best. It had an engaging story and beautiful animation. It also continued the story of Voyager. Not only has Paramount decided to cancel Prodigy but they are also “erasing” it altogether by removing it from streaming. That certainly seems to be vindictive. If Paramount is that hard up for cash & dividends perhaps, they need new management? Also, since ST is considered a prime Paramount property why cancel Prodigy given that it was well received enough to warrant a renewal a few months ago? At the very least Paramount should greenlight a wrap up episode. I wonder with Discovery being cancelled and now Prodigy where does that leave Lower Decks? What does this portend for a ST Legacy series? Why are they giving us a ST Academy series anyway? Prodigy had the “lightning in the bottle” that the 3rd season of Picard and SNW has- a mix of legacy characters with new characters going onto new adventures. Prodigy was unusual in the fact that Paramount ordered 20-episode seasons. Maybe it would have been better to air 10-maybe 12 per season? That may have reduced the overall cost of production. Since CBS will need fresh fall content & the writers’ strike is delaying production perhaps airing Prodigy in prime time could increase viewership? I bet that Discovery S5 is aired in prime time to fill the gap. At SNW is “safe” for now but who knows what the bean counters at Paramount will decide in the future. I am hoping that another streaming service will pick up Prodigy because ii should have never been cancelled in the first place. I am delighted though that the producers are not giving up by finishing production on season 2 & looking for a new home for Prodigy.

There should be a new law that taxpayers can’t be footing the bill for streamers to delete content. It’s absurd! Schools, hospitals, these are where taxes should go to. Not deleting content, hurting creators and consumers! Tax-write offs are handouts struggling people give billionaires and usually they justify that they are creating jobs (even though, many times, they aren’t). But getting them off the hook from paying their fair share and enjoying write-offs which will make other people’s share heavier, so they can take away content from creators and consumers? Whatever law or tax code allowing this must be eliminated.

Poor decisions by clueless executives never cease to amaze me. Prodigy season one was simply amazing. What I watched was creativity’s finest examples in storytelling.

They should not have cancelled this series. It’s basically the Star Trek equivalent to Star Wars: Rebels, and should be taken equally seriously!

We love this show! And so do our kids! What a mistake to cancel it. 😔

Any Trek that features Kate Mulgrew a.k.a. Capt Janeway is headed for the chopping board. Actress made the character, even in animated form, boring..

Most people would disagree with you. After all, “Voyager” remains the most-streamed “Star Trek” series on Netflix. 🔥

Who cares about Showtime! I subscribe to Paramount Plus+ from Trek amongst another things and if it wasn’t for Trek, I would cancel! This is a real slap in the face to Trek fans. Boo Paramount!!

There isn’t a lot of good TV for kids. This promotes science and shows girls can be part of the future. Just like voyager . I don’t feel that the men understand that prodigy is great for girls and boys Sad that it’s been cancelled.Cutting it shows that it’s still a mans world . It also shows that kids should be taken seriously. Just like on next gen. It took a while for Wesly to get heard .Captain Janeway took the kids seriously. That parents who are star treck faithful can share with their kids and grandkids . It also prepares the next gen for exploration of Mars and beyond. It can inspire kids to dream about going to space. Short cited . Discovery cancelation too leves me to think that it isn’t important to the executive who run paramount . It’s just about getting our money . Tv isn’t what it once was. They cancelled the original . They were wrong then and they are wrong now.discovery has a minority woman as a captian. So taking these shows off what is the reason behind it?

What a shame that the decision makers make such poor decisions

Its a good cartoon Why the good stuff dont have a chance

I’ll be fine with the loss of “Prodigy” if we get a continuation of “Star Trek: Voyager”. There are still plenty of great story opportunities with that franchise! But no prequels or lame spinoffs—we want our classic Voyager crew back!

Won’t bore you. Bring back PRODIGY! Now that that’s over I think the show is a perfect display of what STAR TREK stands for. View some episodes when they are on the ship.

Star Trek: Prodigy

  • View history

Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated series that premiered on 28 October 2021 , first on the streaming service Paramount+ , then on Nickelodeon , [1] a conglomerate sister broadcasting channel. It is the ninth Star Trek spin-off and the third animated Star Trek series, following Star Trek: The Animated Series and Star Trek: Lower Decks . Unlike the previous animated series, this is the first to be rendered entirely with computer-generated imaging and 3D modeling. Previously, the Star Trek: Short Treks episode " The Girl Who Made the Stars " was produced in a similar fashion. Two seasons were produced before the series' cancellation on 23 June 2023 .

Alex Kurtzman stated that unlike Lower Decks , Prodigy will be kid-focused with an " entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone, " adding, " What's exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what's the different tone, but what's the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they're entirely different? " [6]

In February 2019, it was announced Nickelodeon had entered talks to air the show, and Trollhunters writers and executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman had boarded the project. [7]

On 24 April 2019 , it was revealed that the series would indeed air (but not debut) on Nickelodeon and focus on a group of lawless teenage characters finding a derelict Starfleet ship which they use to " search for adventure, meaning and salvation. " [8]

In May 2019, CBS filed trademarks for the titles " Star Trek: Section 31 " and " Star Trek: Prodigy ", with posts on Reddit later in the year attaching the Prodigy title to the second animated series. [9]

On 23 July 2020, it was revealed that the show would, in fact, be named Star Trek: Prodigy , and that it would air on Nickelodeon in 2021. [10] [11] The premiere episode did air on the channel on 17 December 2021, but on that occasion it was an one-time-only affair. [12] It was eventually announced that the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) would belatedly air regularly on a repetitive basis on the broadcaster in the home market one year later, starting on 8 July 2022 . [13]

In 2022 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for "Outstanding Animated Series" in the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards , and won the Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Production Design." [14]

In 2023 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for a Television Critics Association Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming," a category with both animated and live action content intended for family and young adult audiences. [15]

Development

In July 2019 , the Hagemans announced the full writers' room for the show. [20] Among those revealed to be writing the series are Trollhunters writer-producers Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt , The 100 writer-producers Shawna Benson and Julie Benson , Black Sails writer Lisa Boyd , Shades of Blue writer Nikhil Jayaram , and Diandra Pendleton-Thompson .

In October 2019 , Kurtzman said that this series will be animated in a digital 3D style, like Ninjago or Trollhunters , as opposed to the more "cartoon" look of Star Trek: Lower Decks . He also confirmed that the series had been picked up for a two-season order, and that a title had been chosen for the series, but he was not yet ready to reveal it. [21]

In the same interview, Heather Kadin said that, due to the time-consuming process of 3D animation, the series would likely air later than 2021 . Kadin also emphasized that the Hagemans' writing style will be accessible to kids without patronizing them or alienating their parents:

" The reason we went to the Hagemans is because if you've seen their work, you know that they're not writing " Muppet Babies ". It's not "Little Spock and Little Kirk." It's not playing down [to viewers] that way. " " Even [with] their characters in Ninjago – they are teenagers – I was able to watch that with my kids and they write with a very epic quality. They tell stories the way we tell stories in live action: serialized, turning over cards… " " I think it will be a great way for fans to introduce the franchise to their kids, and for new fans to be formed, because it's such a big franchise, [it can be hard] to get into as a kid. " [22]

In an October 2020 interview with Trek Report , producer and writer Aaron Waltke said that Prodigy aims to bridge the gap between old and new iterations of the Star Trek franchise , with a series that strikes a tone of hope and idealism. [23]

" It's been exhilarating to make a series that honors classic Trek for legacy fans like myself, but also provides an entry point for new audiences to be introduced to the world of the Federation and its aspirations for an idealistic future, even when facing adversity. Writing the return of our beloved Voyager captain feels oddly iconic, like a homecoming for me. And we hope to create something both young and old can watch together… just as I once did with my dad all those many years ago. " [24]

In February 2021 , it was announced that Prodigy would debut on Paramount+ in 2021. An image of the alien bridge crew was also released. [25]

On First Contact Day in April 2021 , the Hagemans revealed that the series will be set in the Delta Quadrant in 2383 . They also revealed an image of Captain Janeway as she will appear in the series, and explained that the character will appear as an emergency training hologram on board the starship. A new summary of the series' premise was also released:

Prodigy " will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. " [26]

In May 2021 , more details about the cast were released, with the main voice cast revealed. [27]

On 23 July 2021 , a teaser trailer was released during the Paramount+ Star Trek Comic-Con@Home panel, revealing the first animated footage of the series along with the first look and name of the vessel, the USS Protostar . [28]

The series' opening title sequence was publicly released on 31 August 2021 , as part of a Paramount+ presentation to the Television Critics Association . This presentation also confirmed that the series' theme music had been composed by Michael Giacchino , and the music for the series would be composed by Nami Melumad . [29]

Star Trek Prodigy - Meet the Cast

In June 2019 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's project manager Ben Robinson indicated that the company would manufacture starship miniatures from this series, [30] though that intent was thwarted by the company's bankruptcy on 5 August 2022.

On 13 July 2021 , ViacomCBS Consumer Products and Playmates Toys jointly announced that the latter had acquired new licensing for "action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories," and slated the first of these products for retail release in 2022. Among other Star Trek series and films, this licensing encompasses Star Trek: Prodigy , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Discovery , and Star Trek: Picard . [31]

On 18 August 2022 , it was announced that two new tie-in books, Supernova (also the title of a video game releasing in October 2022 ) and A Dangerous Trade would be released on 17 January 2023 . [32]

Cancellation and pick-up

On 23 June 2023, Prodigy was cancelled by Paramount+. While Season 2 was allowed to finish post-production, it, along with the series as a whole, would be sold to any interested third-party outsider. [33] The series removal from Paramount+ was effectuated three days later, on 26 June 2023. [34] The series was on Nickelodeon already on a broadcast hiatus, and therefore not to return afterwards. [2]

Paramount did not provide a clear reason for the completely unexpected cancellation. News sites such as TrekMovie.com , ScreenRant, and Inverse suggested that the cancellation was motivated by cost-cutting measures and tax write-offs, whereas Paramount itself had intimated in a statement to TrekMovie.com that it was part of clearing the way of the upcoming merger of Paramount+ with Showtime by " refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers ". Paramount concurrently assured TrekMovie.com that it remained stoutly "invested in growing the Star Trek franchise". The decision to place Prodigy outside the realm of that same franchise and offer it up to third-party outsiders however, was counter to their " Star Trek Universe" all-under-one-roof franchise umbrella concept instituted at the start of 2021 . [35] [36] [37]

On 21 July 2023 , showrunner Aaron Waltke announced on his Twitter account that the entire first season had become available for digital purchase at digital vendors like Prime Video , ITunes Store , Google, and others. Up until that point only the first ten episodes had been available, which was conforming to the recent physical PRO Season 1, Volume 1 DVD and Blu-ray home video format releases. [38] While the franchise had intimated that the series had not performed to expectations, Prodigy had managed in the meantime to gather a fanbase of its own, which had resulted in a run on the DVD and Blu-ray stocks still available at retailers at the time of the cancellation announcement, causing them to sell out quickly in the home market. [39]

Aside from that, this fanbase also tried to organize an online campaign to save the series. [40] On 24 August 2023 , in an effort to find the show another home, a fan raised US$1,200 on GoFundMe to have an airplane tow a banner reading, "#SAVE STAR TREK PRODIGY" over the Los Angeles offices of streaming services Netflix , Amazon Prime , and Hulu . [41] A drawing with the same hashtag is set to be among the items going to space on a Blue Origin (part of the empire of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ) flight. [42]

Kevin Hageman expressed in an interview that his desire was to see a third season come to fruition, that will eventually lead up to an animated film series. [43]

On 11 October 2023 , it was Netflix that announced that they had picked up Prodigy , with season two set to premier in 2024 , [44] [45] after season one had debuted on the streaming service later in 2023 on 25 December. [46] [47] A consequence of this is that if Hageman is to see his hopes for post-season two productions come true, he has to convince Netflix to pay for the entirety of the production costs, as the franchise itself has distanced itself from Prodigy . [3] This could turn out to be a tall order for Hageman, considering Netflix's prior experience with the first three seasons of Discovery (see: Netflix: Footnote ), despite Prodigy hardly having caused any division within " Trekdom ", if any at all, as opposed to Discovery .

A Rough Road To Prodigy Season 2

Getting to Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 has been a long road. In June 2023, Paramount+ unexpectedly cancelled the series. After many fan campaigns and social media protests, Netflix picked up the series in October 2023. When picking up the series, Netflix did not give the second season a confirmed release date. The streamer simply said to expect it in 2024, adding that it would consist of 20 episodes.

Today’s unexpected release of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is honestly bizarre. One wonders if this has to be a mistake or is intentional. Looking at France TV, it says Prodigy Season 2 is available from 22 March 2024 until 29 February 2028. It’s possible that this could be the result of a special licensing deal. Paramount+ has been selling the rights to its content library in recent months. An example of this is the constant shifting of Star Trek movies to different streaming providers. This is dependent on what region you are in, of course.

season 2 star trek prodigy

Regardless, Prodigy Season 2 is on French TV. It’s in French! Congratulations to the French-speaking Star Trek audience; this is a big win for you all. If you want to go forth and watch, you can do so! But remember that not everyone has access to these Star Trek episodes. Unless you understand the French language, you’ll have a hard time listening to these episodes. Somewhat reminds you of the old days. I mean, when Star Trek aired in the USA before anywhere else in the world for several months. Then again, that has actually happened in recent years, too.

Regardless, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is an intergalactic adventure with all the time-honoured and beloved hallmarks of Trek . We are incredibly excited for its full release around the world!

How to Watch Star Trek: Prodigy Now That It's Been Removed From Paramount+

The swift erasure of the star trek animated series by paramount now means your options are very limited..

Image for article titled How to Watch Star Trek: Prodigy Now That It's Been Removed From Paramount+

Paramount apparently couldn’t wait more than a weekend after its shocking decision to both renege on the season two greenlight for Star Trek: Prodigy and remove its entire first season from its Paramount+ streaming service : the animated Trek series, barely a year old, has now been removed from “the home of Star Trek .” But if you still want to watch it, there’s still options.

Is star trek: prodigy streaming on paramount+ anymore.

As of today, June 26—just three days after Paramount’s announcement that it would remove Prodigy from its streaming platform, alongside several other titles— Star Trek: Prodigy is no longer streaming on the service in the U.S. It is currently as of this writing still streaming in international markets where Paramount+ is available, but presumably not for much longer.

Can I Buy Star Trek: Prodigy Physically?

Yes and no: or at least, you can buy some of it. Paramount released DVD and Blu-ray copies of the first 10 episodes of Prodigy ’s first season earlier this year, but in the wake of the news of its cancellation and removal, those physical releases are now suddenly harder to come by—they’re both currently out of stock on Amazon, for example.

Episodes 11-20 were never announced as getting a physical release, and that now remains unlikely.

Can I Buy Star Trek: Prodigy Digitally?

The first 10 episodes of Prodigy can be purchased digitally through Amazon Prime Video (where all 20 could be previously accessed through Amazon’s storefront if you subscribed to Paramount+). I n the U.S., the first half of the season is also a vailable to purchase on Apple TV , Vudu , Youtube TV , and Google Play . If you’re based in the UK, the full season one is currently available to purchase through the Sky Store , as well as through Apple TV, Youtube TV, and Google Play.

What Will Happen to Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

Star Trek: Prodigy ’s second season, originally planned to hit Paramount+ this winter , had largely finished post-production on 20 more episodes. While those episodes will not air on Paramount+ any more, the team behind Prodigy has expressed the intent to finish the episodes, with the hopes of CBS Studios being able to sell both season one and season two to a new buyer. It’s currently unknown how long that process will take, if a buyer is found.

Could Star Trek: Prodigy Return to Paramount+?

The short answer is that we don’t know, especially if streaming rights are ultimately sold to another service for now. While Paramount is the latest in a host of major streamers, including Warner Bros.’ Max and Disney’s Disney+ , to remove streaming originals from their platforms as financial impairment charges— tax write-offs that cover the no-longer-needed charges to host these assets as-is—we don’t know the details of how long the impairment period will last, meaning that while Prodigy could eventually return to the service, it’s definitely not going to be any time soon.

Update 6/27/2023: This post has been updated to reflect that now only the first 10 episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy are available for purchase on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S..

Star Trek: Prodigy's Brett Gray Prepared For His Role By Keeping Himself In The Dark

The second season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" is still awaiting a release date in North America, although French readers should be able to view it right now on the region-specific France.TV. The story of the cancelation of "Prodigy" is sad for Trekkies, as the kid-centric animated series, created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, was just growing into its own and emerging as a proper "Star Trek" series.

The premise was fun: in an unknown and distant part of the galaxy, a group of teenage aliens -- fleeing slavery in a mine -- discover an abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar. On board, they meet a holographic version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who assumes the teens are Starfleet cadets and require tutelage. The teens are hotheaded, feisty, and brooding in the way that teens tend to be, but Janeway teaches them to operate as a crew and mature as individuals. By the end of the first season, the teens were wearing uniforms and staging dangerous rescue missions.

The ersatz captain of the crew was Dal R'El, played by actor Brett Gray. Dal didn't have a family and didn't even know what species he was. He initially took command out of bluster and unearned confidence but eventually learned to get along with his crew and even came to care for them as friends. Scant exposure to Starfleet ideals was enough to inspire ambition and growth.

It seems that Gray, when preparing for "Prodigy," deliberately didn't do any "Star Trek" research. Gray was not a Trekkie by any stretch and had no working knowledge of the franchise. However, since Dal was also clueless about the details of Starfleet, Gray felt it was fitting to keep his homework to an absolute minimum. Gray admitted as much in a 2022 interview with TrekMovie.

Barely Preparing

Of course, Trekkies would likely prefer to hear from actors that they are as learned in "Star Trek" as most diehard fans. "Star Trek" is a vast and complicated universe and I think many Trekkies would be comforted to know that the actors they watch every week are just as sensitive to continuity as they are. Not so with Gray. When asked about how much "Star Trek" knowledge he entered "Prodigy" with, Gray was frank, saying:

"You're not going like this answer. I tried to barely prepare it all. I was really nervous coming into it. I thought maybe I should watch every 'Star Trek' and I should go learn about everything; see who the people are and things like that. But as I was reading the scripts for the first season, I realized that I could discover this all as myself with Dal. I don't know if that was the right way to do it but I feel like it's freed me up so much."

To be fair, ignorance would actually aid Gray in creating a character like Dal. If the character had never heard of Starfleet, then it would stand to reason that the actor shouldn't have either. Dal and Gray could, then, go on parallel growth arcs, learning about "Star Trek" through snippets of knowledge, all while offering their own eye-rolling, irreverent viewpoint. Dal didn't find Starfleet sacred, allowing Gray, as he said, to do more with his character. Indeed, when it came to a known element of "Star Trek" narration, Gray said that his ignorance impressed the producers.

'I Don't Even Know What A Captain's Log Is'

Gray went on to relate a story about his unique read of the classic "Star Trek" exposition device -- the captain's log:

"I remember my first captain's log -- I don't know if you've heard any of them, but they're getting better -- but when I first started them it was super flippant and the producers loved it. They said, 'Wow, these are usually done very matter-of-factly and super seriously, did you choose to do that?' And I was like, 'I don't even know what a captain's log is!' I think in some ways, it's freed me up to bring some freshness and to bring some life into these characters in a different way than we've seen before."

Indeed, "Prodigy" is one of the most in-depth examples of an outsider character learning about Starfleet for the first time. Gray reinforced that he and Dal were learning at the same time.

In June 2023, it was announced that "Star Trek: Prodigy" had been canceled and that the show would be removed from Paramount+. This came as an utter shock to the "Prodigy" cast and crew . They were given leeway to finish the second season, but there was to be no more "Prodigy" after that. Currently, "Prodigy" is available on Netflix. The sudden removal of "Prodigy" was the first sign that Paramount had invested too much in "Star Trek" and that the franchise needed to contract . "Picard" is over, "Prodigy" and "Discovery" have been canceled, and "Section 31" was transformed from a series into a movie.

Those of us outside of France will have to wait and see if Dal truly grows up.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2: Release Date, Trailers, Crossover, and What to Expect

Star Trek's flashiest crew flies into the galaxy with all phasers blazing in Season 2.

When and where is star trek: strange new worlds season 2 coming out, watch the star trek: strange new worlds season 2 trailers, who are the cast and characters of star trek: strange new worlds season 2, what do we know about star trek: strange new worlds season 2’s story (and the crossover episode), what is the future of star trek: strange new world, who are the creators of star trek: strange new worlds.

The first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was a masterpiece combining nostalgic elements of Star Trek: The Original Series and modern techniques that was a pleasant surprise for fans of all ages. It had an excellent reception from both critics and audiences, mostly because of its amazing cast, and in many ways, it's a return to what fans loved about much of the original series. Season 2 is coming out fairly soon, and we can hope that it will keep up the excellent quality from the first season. It is another chance for us to see what the Enterprise is up to before Kirk and another excellent saga in the Federation's bid to explore the galaxy. Now without further ado, let's get into everything we know so far about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 will be hitting screens on June 15, 2023 . As of right now, Season 2 has already finished production, and small bits of information have been leaking out to the public via formal and informal channels. As with the rest of the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 will be released on Paramount+. The first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was on a Thursday release cycle, running from May 10, 2022, to July 7, 2022, and is available for free on Paramount's YouTube Channel .

Watch on Paramount+

Ahead of the official trailer, we got to see two sneak peeks for the season. The first of these sneak peeks features Lieutenant Erica Ortegas (played by Melissa Navia ) on her way to an away mission. It seems the tempo of the crew has hardly changed even though Number One Una Chin-Riley (played by Rebecca Romijn ) is no longer with the crew. We also have some more pithy wordplay with Spock as he continues to grow his ability to interact more naturally with others.

The second sneak peek is more of a behind-the-scenes look. In the previous series, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation , we often see casual places for the crew to relax around the ships. The showrunners thought the mess hall that we saw in the first season was too sparse and have introduced a new area for the ship. The video features Will Wheaton , formerly TNG's Wesley Crusher, and the production designer Jonathan Lee showing off the impressive new set piece. It looks somewhat familiar to Ten Forward and has that modernized 1960s look. This new set is supposed to feature a lot more intimate conversations between characters and includes a ton of easter eggs. One that was immediately picked up by Will Wheaton was the Saurian Brandy from Star Trek: Picard . We see Guinan and Picard drinking it from a similar bottle in Picard Season 2 Episode 1 "The Star Grazer".

The first trailer for Strange New Worlds Season 2 was released on April 19, 2023. The roughly two-minute trailer serves as a teaser for the events to come. Check it out here:

More recently, we got the official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 on May 24. The new trailer showcases a lot more of the action to come, and gives us our first proper look at the series' upcoming crossover with a certain other Star Trek show. See the trailer in the player below and stay tuned for more:

We received a clip from the upcoming season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . In this clip of Episode 2, Una stands on trial. It's a very entertaining albeit brief video.

Most of the cast from the previous season is returning, which is to be expected given the state the show was left in. Given the events of the last season, the Enterprise will be in need of a new head engineer. The newcomer to the enterprise will be played by the iconic Carol Kane . Kane is well known for roles in the TV series Taxi and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as well as various film roles, usually playing a more comedic motherly character. It seems that this time around she will be a no-nonsense engineer, but perhaps we will see some of that comedic side as well.

The full list of main cast members in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 includes Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M'Benga, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley / Number One, and Carol Kane as Pelia, among others.

One of the major storylines that we can expect to see is what exactly happened to Number One. One of the highlights of the first season was finding out that she was genetically engineered (one of the recurring issues in Star Trek with characters such as Deep Space Nine ’s Dr. Bashier) and that she has been taken away from her position on the Enterprise. Captain Pike and the rest of the crew definitely support her, but with her position unfilled, someone will have to step in to fill her shoes in the interim.

We also have a first occurrence in the Star Trek Universe, a combined crossover episode with the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks . Tawny Newsome (who plays Ensign Beckett Mariner in the animated show) and Jack Quaid (who stars alongside Newsome as Ensign Brad Boimler) will be making their live-action debut during the new season of Strange New Worlds . Given that Mariner and Boimler both originate from a timeline much closer to that of Star Trek: The Next Generation , we are certainly left with more than just a few questions. So far, we know that the series will have combined animated and live-action scenes. That episode will be directed by Star Trek veteran Jonathan Frakes .

With characters such as Paul Wesley ’s Captain Kirk appearing in Season 2 , there is certainly a lot of potential for a Season 3. And clearly, Paramount+ has taken note, as it has been confirmed that Strange New Worlds will be getting a Season 3 . The show has plenty of storylines left to explore and has proven to be among the more successful shows in the franchise, so this hardly comes as a surprise. From the tension between Spock and Nurse Chapel to Uhura’s hesitation to continue in Starfleet, not to mention La'an’s murky past, there is plenty left to unpack on this amazing show.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was created by Akiva Goldsman , Alex Kurtzman , and Jenny Lumet . Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman are the showrunners for the season. Season 2's directors include Chris Fisher , Amanda Row , Eduardo Sánchez , Dan Liu , Jonathan Frakes, and Valerie Weiss . The episodes were written by Henry Alonso Myers, Akiva Goldsman, Dana Horgan , David Reed , Kirsten Beyer , Davy Perez , Kathryn Lyn , and Onitra Johnson . The score for Season 2 was composed by Season 1 and Star Trek: Prodigy composer Nami Melumad . Executive producers on the show include Eugene Roddenberry , Trevor Roth , Jenny Lumet, Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Aaron Baiers , Heather Kadin , Henry Alonso Myers, Akiva Goldsman, and Alex Kurtzman.

Screen Rant

5 seasons of star trek is the new 7, unfortunately.

Star Trek: Discovery and Lower Decks ending at 5 seasons seems to be a Star Trek show's new standard instead of the TNG era's 7 seasons.

  • Star Trek shows on Paramount+ now typically last up to 5 seasons due to the changing TV landscape in the era of streaming.
  • Shorter seasons allow creators to focus on quality over quantity, resulting in better episodes without filler content.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a critical and fan favorite, likely to last 5 seasons with its successful storytelling and characters.

5 seasons seems to be the new normal for Star Trek shows on Paramount+ instead of the 7 seasons of the Star Trek: The Next Generation era. The television landscape has undergone numerous changes since Star Trek: The Original Series premiered in 1966, and the rise of streaming, in particular, has changed the way people watch TV. With its seven-season run, Star Trek: The Next Generation established a pattern that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager followed. With around 26 episodes per season, all three TNG -era Star Trek shows produced well over 100 episodes, but that amount of content is likely no longer achievable by Star Trek .

Star Trek: Discovery will come to a close with its currently-streaming season 5, and the upcoming f Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will also be its last. Aside from Star Trek: Picard , which was always meant to run for three seasons, five seasons appears to be the new Star Trek threshold. Star Trek TV shows are now all streaming series, and streaming follows a different business model than network TV shows, typically having shorter episode counts and fewer seasons. This allows for streaming shows to have bigger budgets and, in Star Trek' s case, Paramount+'s shows are produced like feature films, which results in higher-quality content.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Why star trek shows on paramount+ only last 5 seasons, in the era of streaming, 5 seasons is a solid run..

While some network shows continue to have 20+ episode seasons, streaming series like Star Trek generally produce about half that. With all of the various streaming services, there is more content available for viewers than there has ever been, and with that comes more competition. Plus, television shows are more expensive than they used to be , particularly genre shows like Star Trek , with their state-of-the-art starships and exotic alien locales. In the cut-throat era of streaming, a new show is lucky to be renewed for season 2, let alone season 5. Five seasons is a good run, especially when each show is given enough time for a proper ending.

While Star Trek shows with only five seasons may seem disappointing to longtime fans, shorter episode counts allow the series' creators to spend more time and money on each episode, which results in less filler. With their longer seasons, Star Trek's TNG -era shows sometimes ran out of money or time, resulting in some lower-quality episodes. Star Trek: The Original Series only ran for three seasons (although the shortest of those contained 24 episodes), and it has its fair share of middling to bad episodes. Shorter and fewer seasons allow for higher-quality episodes with feature film-quality production values.

Modern television dramas tend to be more serialized than episodic, and serialization lends itself to shorter episode counts.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Will Probably Run 5 Seasons

Strange new worlds has been a resounding success among fans and critics..

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already been renewed for season 4, and it has become one of the most successful modern Star Trek shows. Not only has Strange New Worlds received almost universal praise among critics (it currently has 98% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it has also been a hit with fans and newcomers alike. With its phenomenal cast of characters and its connections to Star Trek canon, it's very likely Strange New Worlds will get a fifth season. In the Star Trek timeline , Strange New Worlds leads directly into Star Trek: The Original Series , meaning it couldn't run forever anyway, but it could conceivably go beyond 5 seasons.

With its experiments with genre and storytelling styles, Strange New Worlds has produced several episodes that will go down as Star Trek classics.

Strange New Worlds is Star Trek at its best. Not only has the show reinvented several classic Sta r Trek characters, but it has also introduced some amazing new characters to canon. With its experiments with genre and storytelling styles, Strange New Worlds has produced several episodes that will go down as Star Trek classics. Hopefully, future Star Trek shows will learn from the success of Strange New Worlds and continue to experiment and push boundaries. Plus, the end of a Star Trek show does not mean an end to those characters. As the Strange New Worlds / Lower Decks crossover proved, characters can always pop up in other shows.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - Everything We Know

Can any other star trek show last 5 seasons, could star trek: prodigy or star trek: starfleet academy make it that long.

Star Trek's next upcoming show, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , is a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery set in the 32nd century, although little else has been revealed. Starfleet Academy will be aimed more at teenagers and young adults and will focus on hopeful cadets dreaming of being the next to explore the final frontier. It's too early to speculate about how many seasons Starfleet Academy will get, as it is largely dependent on how successful the show becomes. Starfleet Academy showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau may have a plan for a certain number of seasons, but it always comes down to the streaming numbers and the business whims of the studio.

A modern Star Trek series is unlikely to produce 100 episodes again as its broadcast predecessors did.

Star Trek: Prodigy was canceled by Paramount+, but was later picked up by Netflix, who plan to release Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 sometime in 2024. Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 is entirely dependent on the streaming numbers of the first two seasons. However, Netflix's decision to pick up Prodigy does set the precedent for canceled Star Trek shows to be picked up by other streaming services. Now ensconced as a streaming franchise, a modern Star Trek series is unlikely to produce 100 episodes again as its broadcast predecessors did. In the modern era of television, it's almost impossible to predict what shows will become hits, but the Star Trek fanbase will hopefully keep the franchise going for many years to come.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”
