A good road trip is one of the most cinematic experiences that a person can have in real life. Different cities and landscapes blur together as scenery flies by your windows and day gradually turns into night. The car can begin to feel like an isolated bubble where nothing matters except the people inside. Whether you’re laughing and singing with friends, fighting with your family, or simply letting your thoughts settle while you drive solo, road trips seem to stop time and create distinct memories that can be revisited over and over again .

So it’s not surprising that filmmakers have been inspired by road trips for as long as there have been movies. From the titans of the Old Hollywood studio system to international arthouse auteurs and contemporary independent directors, virtually every great filmmaker has tried their hand at a road trip movie at one point or another. Locations and genres can change, but the motif of people going from one place to another in a car is one of the building blocks of the international language of cinema.

Road trip movies are versatile enough to encompass a wide variety of subject matter, but they often fall into two genres: comedies and contemplative dramas. The road trip comedy is a Hollywood standard because its built-in structure (characters need to get somewhere in a finite amount of time and are stuck together in a small space) lends itself to endless funny scenarios. From disgruntled fathers driving their badly-behaved children to strangers who fall in love after being forced to travel together, cars serve as confined spaces that allow a variety of relationships to flourish. On the other end of the spectrum, you have dramas from auteurs like Wim Wenders and Ingmar Bergman that see the road as a place for humans to think. Those films prioritize the destination much less than the self-discovery that can take place when you’re not in any particular rush to get somewhere.

The road trip movie has endured for over a century, and its timeless appeal means that it’s unlikely to disappear any time soon. Keep reading for ten of our favorites, listed in chronological order.

“It Happened One Night” (1934)

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert, 1934

What It Is:  The archetypal Hollywood romantic comedy, Frank Capra’s “It Happened One Night” stars Claudette Colbert as pampered socialite Ellie, who boards a Greyhound bus from Florida to New York City to reunite with her new husband, pilot King Westley (Jameson Thomas), after her father attempts to annul the marriage. Unused to fending for herself, she ends up relying on the help of sarcastic newspaper reporter Peter (Clark Gable) to make the journey, despite despising his personality. At least at first — hitchhiking adventures and stays in motels quickly cause sparks to fly between the mismatched pair.

Perfect For:  Couples looking for date night films, “Looney Tunes” fans who want to watch the Gable performance that inspired Bugs Bunny, and lovers of pretty much every romantic comedy made in the last nine decades. —WC

“Wild Strawberries” (1957)

WILD STRAWBERRIES, Victor Sjostrom, Bibi Andersson, 1957

What It Is:  Not exactly the fun road trip romp the genre usually promises, “Wild Strawberries” uses a long car ride as the backdrop for a surreal exploration of aging, loneliness, and death. Ingmar Bergman’s film stars Victor Sjöström as cold-hearted professor Isak Borg, who is set to receive a lifetime achievement award for his career in bacteriology. On the drive to the university where the ceremony will take place, he’s accompanied by his pregnant daughter-in-law Marianne (Ingrid Thulin) and a group of young hitchhikers — one of whom is a double in looks and name for his childhood sweetheart Sara (played by Bibi Andersson). Over the course of the trip, Isak slowly warms to his younger companions, and experiences a series of flashbacks and dreams that forces him to confront the impending end of his life and his many regrets from his empty existence.

Perfect For:  Existential types, dying old men, and those whose only exposure to Bergman’s films are the HBO “Scenes From a Marriage” remake and the chess scene from “Seventh Seal.” —WC

“Easy Rider” (1969)

EASY RIDER, from left: Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson, 1969 ESY 003FOH(1011)

What It Is : A counterculture classic, Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider” stars the director and Peter Fonda as two drug-smuggling motorcyclists on a journey from Los Angeles to New Orleans, where they’re hoping to celebrate Mardi Gras. Along the road, they encounter a colorful cast of hippies, free love commune residents, addicts, prostitutes, and other outsiders. Their free-wheeling adventures are contrasted by the judgment they face from small town types and law enforcement looking to lock them up.

Perfect For:  Rebels, stoners, general miscreants everywhere, and fans of the iconic rock bands like The Byrds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Steppenwolf that soundtrack the film. —WC

“Two-Lane Blacktop” (1971)

TWO-LANE BLACKTOP, Laurie Bird, James Taylor, 1971

What It Is: “Two Lane Blacktop” is so clearly a product of its time that we could never hope to reverse engineer it. But when watched in 2023, it’s a fascinating countercultural artifact and a remnant of a film industry that now looks completely unrecognizable. Monte Hellman’s portrait of youthful angst and the freedom of the open road stars James Taylor and Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson as speed-obsessed drifters whose encounter with a mysterious driver named GTO prompts them to embark on a cross-country race.

Who It’s For:  Anyone with a need for speed and pop culture geeks who enjoy seeing famous non-actors trying to act. —CZ

“Paris, Texas” (1984)

PARIS, TEXAS, from left: Harry Dean Stanton, Hunter Carson, 1984, TM & Copyright © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved. /Courtesy Everett Collection

What It Is: After making a name for himself in the German arthouse scene with his Road Movie Trilogy consisting of “Alice in the Cities,” “The Wrong Move,” and “Kings of the Road,” Wim Wenders brought his brand of contemplative cinema to America and made his magnum opus. “Paris, Texas” tells the story of a broken man (Harry Dean Stanton) wandering through the desert before his brother finds him and convinces him to reconnect with the family he walked out on. Wenders continued to find poetry in the loneliness of the road, and the desolate American scenery and Stanton’s heartbreakingly expressive face ended up being the best muses of his career.

Perfect For:  Fans of slow cinema and anyone looking to brush up on the 20th century’s most impressive works of filmmaking. —CZ

“Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” (1985)

PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, Pee Wee Herman (Paul Reubens), 1985

What It Is: After developing a cult following from his stage show at the Roxy, Paul Reubens brought his comedic persona known as Pee-Wee Herman to the big screen in a whimsical road trip comedy directed by a young animator named Tim Burton. The film sees the idiosyncratic man-child traveling across the country to recover his stolen bike — and using his charm and joie de vivre to defuse conflicts with all of the shady characters he meets along the way.

Perfect for: Loners, rebels, and anyone who wants to revisit the work of a comedic genius at the height of his powers. —CZ

“Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” (1987)

PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES, Steve Martin, John Candy, 1987, © Paramount/courtesy Everett Collection

What It Is:  John Hughes’ holiday classic stars Steve Martin and John Candy as a mismatched pair of travelers who team up to make it home to Chicago for Thanksgiving. Martin’s suave ad executive constantly clashes with Candy’s bumbling shower curtain ring salesman as their cursed trip leads them onto — you guessed it — planes, trains, and automobiles in an attempt to get home before the holiday ends. Utterly ridiculous until it gets touching, the film is one of the strongest entries in the seemingly endless string of hits that Hughes churned out in the 1980s.

Perfect For:  Families at Thanksgiving and anyone on a delayed flight who wants to remember that things could be so much worse. —CZ

“Thelma & Louise” (1991)

THELMA & LOUISE, (aka THELMA AND LOUISE), from left: Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, 1991, ©MGM/courtesy Everett Collection

What It Is:  Ridley Scott and screenwriter Callie Khouri flipped the script on the conventional gender roles of the buddy comedy genre, opting to tell a story about two women having a blast while running from the law. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis give career-best performances as the eponymous duo — and both picked up well-derved Oscar nominations for Best Actress. The film is best remembered for its shockingly bold ending, but stands out as one of the 20th century’s most vibrant portrayals of friendship and the highways of America.

Who It’s For:  Ridley Scott completionist s, feminist film scholars, and anyone in the mood for a great time. —CZ

“The Straight Story” (David Lynch, 1999)

THE STRAIGHT STORY, Richard Farnsworth, 1999. ©Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection

What It Is: Perhaps the biggest anomaly in David Lynch’s filmography, “The Straight Story” saw the beloved auteur shifting away from surrealism to tell a G-rated story of a man who travels the country on a riding lawnmower. While the Disney movie doesn’t feature any of the twisted nightmares that define many of Lynch’s best works, it’s filled with the wholesome Americana imagery that appears throughout his filmography. The film is a reminder that for all of his signature stylistic flourishes, Lynch is a filmmaker whose grasp of the fundamentals allow him to tell compelling stories without hiding behind bells and whistles.

Perfect for:  Anyone whose favorite parts of “Twin Peaks” were the wholesome small town antics. —CZ

“Little Miss Sunshine” (2006)

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, Abigail Breslin, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, 2006, © Fox Searchlight / Courtesy: Everett Collection

What It Is:  One of the most darkly amusing road trip comedies in recent memory follows the plight of a dysfunctional family who takes an 800-mile road trip to support their daughter’s entry in the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. Piling into a van that’s breaking down almost as rapidly as the familial ties that bind them, they find themselves confronting their delusional dreams and long-simmering resentments (and a horn that never stops honking). While “Little Miss Sunshine” is a classic example of the “Sundance road trip movie” trope that’s often maligned in indie film circles, there’s no denying that it’s one of the best entries in the subgenre.

Perfect For:  Anyone who is beginning to question their belief that child beauty pageants are an unambiguous societal good. —CZ

It is considered one of the best comedy films of all time and is notable for having a unique and remarkable screenplay that revolves around friendships, relationships, and happiness.

The main story is about two women—Annie (Wiig) and Helen (Bryne)—who are competing for the bride’s friendship and attention. Being the bride’s best friend, Annie is asked to be the maid of honor.

However, due to a series of unfavorable circumstances and Annie’s problems getting in the way, the bride has second thoughts and chooses Helen to become the leader of the bridesmaids.

Annie feels betrayed, so she alienates herself from everyone. Megan, one of the bridesmaids, comes to comfort Annie and give her advice about how she can be more responsible and take control of her life.

Annie finally gets back on her feet, reconciling with everyone and fixing everything she messed up.

This movie may be a comedy, but it is also so much more than that. It teaches us that, no matter who we are or where we stand, our true friends will always be there to give us strength and warmth. We may have differences, but that is precisely why we complement and support each other so well.

3. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is based on Ann Brashares’ 2001 novel of the same name. It stars America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel under the direction of Ken Kwapis and screenplay of Delia Ephron and Elizabeth Chandler.

Critics have called it an “iconic story of friendship, family, loyalty, and acceptance.”

The movie follows four best friends who find a pair of pants that strangely fits each of them perfectly, even though they are different sizes. They spent their summer taking turns using the pants and learning valuable lessons about friendship and their relationships with other people.

Ultimately, they all learn that what matters most is the love and support they have for each other.

We recommend this movie to teens and adults who are looking for a classic friendship film. However, parental guidance may be needed for younger viewers since some of the scenes contain sensitive topics such as sex and suicide.

4. Thelma & Louise

Thelma & Louise is a legendary movie and considered the “landmark of feminist films.” It was even registered in 2016 by the United States Library of Congress as a “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” movie. It garnered several nominations from three awards bodies, winning Best Original Screenplay from both the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards.

The story is about two friends—Thelma and Louise—who want to take a break from their lives, so they go on a weekend getaway. While on the road, they encountered a series of incidents that turn their lives upside down.

These include meeting a rapist they accidentally kill in self-defense, coming across a handsome young thief who takes all their money, and eventually ending up on the edge of a cliff after being pursued by police officers.

Ultimately, the bond between the two main protagonists is so strong that they decide to die together instead of spending the rest of their lives in regret and dissatisfaction.

These two friends are able to break free like they have always wanted to, even if they have to sacrifice their lives in the process.

5. Now and Then

Now and Then is about four childhood friends who recount the story of their childhood in the summer of 1970. There are four major characters—Samantha, Roberta, Chrissy, and Teeny—all of whom have distinct characteristics and circumstances.

The main story of their childhood revolves around the death of a boy named Dear Johnny. Due to their curiosity about how the boy died, they made a pact to discover the true story behind his death.

While in the process of investigating his death, however, they each have their own problems to deal with, and ultimately develop a sense of independence and self-reliance. They also discover that they have a number differences. However, due to their solid bond, they are able to remain strong and intact.

Although the movie was highly criticized for being overly similar to Stand by Me, a film with a similar storyline, it still received praise from others and eventually developed a cult following. We recommend this movie for friends since the moral of the story is all about trust and loyalty.

6. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

Romy White and Michele Weinberger have been friends since high school. Although unsuccessful and living a very simple life together in California, they were happy and satisfied with how their lives have turned out. Everything changed, however, upon the news of their upcoming high school reunion.

The two main women decide to fake their careers and lifestyle to impress their former classmates. They tell everyone that they are the inventors of “Post-its” and that they have been living a life full of success and pleasure.

However, things get complicated when one of their classmates reveals that they are lying because the real inventor was Arthur Fry.

Starring Mira Sorvino as Romy and Lisa Kudrow as Michele, this one-of-a-kind friendship film tells the story of how best friends can turn out to be actual soul mates and partners for life. It also teaches us that although two people may be dependent on each other, they can still live their own independent lives as long as they keep their love and support for each other intact.

Beaches is a 1988 film directed by Garry Marshall, starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. It is based on Iris Rainer Dart’s novel bearing the same name that was published in 1985. It initially garnered negative feedback from movie critics, but ultimately gained commercial success and became a box office hit.

The story is about two childhood friends—C.C. and Hilary—who first met on a beach in Atlantic City. Over time, they were able to build a strong relationship and eventually become best friends. C.C. becomes an actress-singer, while Hilary becomes an heiress and lawyer.

Although their worlds are very different, they still support each other through all of their difficulties and differences.

The ending is a bit sad, however, as one of the friends dies and the other has to say goodbye.

If you are looking for something that can make you laugh and cry at the same time while holding hands or cuddling with your best girlfriend, then this movie might be a great fit.

8. Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures is one of the most powerful movies ever made—not just because of the friendship between the main characters, but also because of the individual strengths and capabilities they have. The entire movie is a masterpiece, from the performance of the actors to the cinematography, storyline, writing, and directing.

The movie is loosely based on a non-fiction book of the same title written by Margot Lee Shetterly. It is about three gifted, African-American women who are mathematicians working for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Space Race. Both the book and the movie tackle prejudice against color and gender.

The story emphasizes equality and teaches us that discrimination is nothing compared to determination and perseverance. No matter who we are or where we came from, we can succeed as long as we have the will and determination to do so.

Hidden Figures touches on a very sensitive topic in American history, and is one of the most celebrated films in recent times. We recommend checking out this film with your best buddies to learn the value of friendship and fighting for what you know you know you deserve in life.

9. Waiting to Exhale

Waiting to Exhale is yet another story about four women—Savannah, Robin, Bernadine, and Gloria—who are bonded by fate and friendship. This film is most appropriate for adults since it is in the romance genre. It is based on Terry McMillan’s 1992 novel of the same name.

In the story, all four women have troubles with their romantic relationships. Savannah is a mistress who seems to have fallen too deeply in love with her married lover. Robin is also a mistress who is tired of being one.

Bernadine is a housewife who gave up her lifelong dream for her husband. Finally, Gloria is a single mother who found out that her husband is gay.

The bond between the four main characters is as strong as if they were family. They frequently gather together to listen to each other’s problems and support one another. In the end, they all find their happy endings, even if some of them don’t end up finding the right man.

This movie teaches us that our true friends will always be there, through thick and thin. We celebrate life with them, and we also cry and share the pain of loss and failure with them. Our friends may have different stories than us, but our bond is strong enough to keep us connected.

10. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower received worldwide acclaim due to its outstanding screenplay and direction. It is originally a novel created by Stephen Chbosky in 1999, but was adapted into a film and written and directed by Chbosky himself in 2012. The movie stars Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller.

The movie follows the story of a boy named Charlie (Lerman) who has suffered from clinical depression since he was young. After being discharged from a mental health care hospital, he starts his new life by entering high school as a freshman.

Since he has always been shy and aloof, he has difficulties making friends at first. But after meeting Sam (Watson) and Patrick (Miller), he starts to gain confidence and strength.

This movie was well received by critics because it increases awareness of mental health issues. In addition to its various awards and acknowledgments, a lot of psychology experts commended the film for depicting what it is like to live with depression and providing commentary on how people should treat patients with depression.

We recommend this movie not just for friends who want to improve their relationships with each other, but also for those who want to learn more about mental illness.

11. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

If you are in for a comedic film that is also a bit of a tragedy, then this movie will likely give you the feels. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a bit underrated, but is an excellent film about friendship and life. Starring Thomas Manne, Olivia Cooke, and RJ Cyler, this movie can make you laugh, cry, and reflect on your life all at the same time.

The plot revolves around Greg (Manne), an aloof kid who is tasked with keep his dying childhood friend company. Rachel (Cooke) has leukemia and is about to undergo chemotherapy, so her parents want things to be easier for her, and provide her with a friend.

Greg introduces his co-worker Earl (Cyler) to Rachel, and the three form a friendship that will last a lifetime.

While Rachel is undergoing treatment, Greg and Earl decide to create a documentary film for her. They gather everyone who knows her (and even people who don’t!) to create a message that would lift her spirits. Greg ensures the viewers and Rachel that she will not die, as she will keep on fighting for her life.

This movie has a sad ending, because Rachel ultimately does die. Nonetheless, it provides a great deal of hope to everyone who is suffering from a life-threatening disease because of the care and support that Greg gives Rachel throughout her battle.

12. The Intouchables

The Intouchables is a French comedy-drama film starring François Cluzet and Omar Sy, directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano. It became the second biggest box office hit in France in 2011 and the most viewed French film in the world until Lucy in 2014. It also received numerous nominations and won the César Award for Best Film.

The story is about an aristocratic quadriplegic millionaire named Philippe who becomes friends with an ex-convict caregiver named Driss. Driss initially only wants Philippe’s signature so he can receive his unemployment benefit from Social Security, but Philippe chooses Driss and hires him immediately.

Driss rejects the job at first, since he only wants the signature, but eventually accepts the job, not knowing that he is about to change the life of Philippe and those around him in a very unusual manner.

We recommend this movie if you are looking for a feel-good film that also tugs at your heart strings. It will make you realize that the best people are sometimes hidden in places where we least expect them. It also teaches the importance of not judging other people based on first impressions or their past.

13. The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is a classic film from the 1980s. The Library of Congress even registered it in the National Film Registry as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” It is listed as one of the best movies of all time by Empire, The New York Times, and Entertainment Weekly.

The story is about five students at Shermer High School who meet for the first time in detention. Each of them come from different backgrounds—a popular girl, a jock, a rebel, a nerd, and an outcast.

While in detention, they start to learn that they all have things in common, and this creates a bond between them. They discover that, although they come from different social groups, they are still just teens who have problems at home, in school, and with life in general.

The Breakfast Club is a teen coming-of-age movie that never gets old. It maintains its relevance no matter what generation you are from.

14. Dead Poets Society

Dead Poets Society is about a group of senior high school students who discover the real meaning of life through the teachings of their brilliant teacher, John Keating (Robin Williams). As an English teacher, Keating motivates and inspires his students through poetry and philosophy. Little does he know that he will also have a large impact on the lives of these students.

Many people say that Dead Poets Society is one of Robin Williams’ best movies. The film achieved significant commercial success upon its release and received a host of accolades. Some of its awards include the BAFTA Award for Best Film, the César Award for Best Foreign Film, and the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

We highly recommend this film, especially for those who enjoy poetry and philosophy. It is a true classic. From the performance of Williams and the rest of the cast to the applicable life lessons that the film conveys, it is truly a masterpiece.

15. Miss You Already

Miss You Already is the story of two best friends who stand by each other through thick and thin. The storyline is quite common, but it is still a great movie thanks to Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette’s superb acting skills. The screenplay has a solid script that gives the movie a powerful impact on the lives of those who watch it.

The plot revolves around Milly’s (Collete) fight against breast cancer and Jess’s (Barrymore) pregnancy. At the exact time that Milly’s world is falling apart, Jess becomes pregnant, making it hard for her to share the good news with her friend. A lot of misunderstandings result, but ultimately the two reconcile before Milly’s death. Jess then realizes that no one can ever compare to her best friend.

This heartbreaking movie is one that you should watch with your BFF. It will make you realize that it is important to cherish every moment you have with your loved ones. You never know what life has in store for you, so it is best to savor the moments with your friends and family while they last.

16. Girl, Interrupted

Girl, Interrupted is based on the true story of Susanna Kaysen, who gets admitted to a psychiatric facility for 18 months after a suicide attempt. The movie took home a lot of awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of the anti-social Lisa Rowe who has sociopath tendencies. Winona Ryder is remarkable, too, and does justice to Susanna Kaysen’s bipolar role.

The movie is more of a psychological drama than a feel-good film, as it portrays a number of different kinds of mental illnesses and what it means to live with them. However, we still consider it to be a wonderful movie about friendship and meeting people because of the strong bond between the main characters, despite their unusual environment.

This movie teaches us that friendship knows no bounds and does not discriminate. It can happen even in the most unexpected circumstances, so we should embrace it when it presents itself. Friendship is not just about love and care, but also support and respect. Friends may fight sometimes, but when everything’s over and done, the bond still remains.

17. Pitch Perfect

Pitch Perfect is about an all-girl a cappella group named The Barden Bellas from the fictional Barden University. It features an ensemble cast, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Skylar Astin, Anna Camp, Ester Dean, and many more. It was a big-time sleeper hit—a film that wasn’t successful at first, but ultimately became a top-grossing release.

The friendships portrayed in this film are ones that take time to develop. At first, the group is a mess, since they can’t seem to overcome their differences. Through music and constant training, however, they are able to accept each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which helps them find the harmony that’s been missing in their group.

This movie tells us that even if people have different tastes and preferences in life, they can still form a strong bond. In fact, people can use these differences to support and complement each other. Friends don’t all have to be exactly alike, as long as they are committed to each other.

18. Clueless

Starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy, this movie about friendship is a retelling of Jane Austen’s 1815 novel titled “Emma.” It is, however, applied in a modern-day setting with tons of emphasis on love and friendship.

Clueless is one of the most beloved films of all time, particularly among teens and young adults. It tells the story of three girls with different beliefs and personalities, but who share a close friendship. It also shows how strong bonds between people can prevent miscommunication, regardless of the circumstances.

It is unlikely that you haven’t already watched this movie, since it has developed a cult following over the years. But whether you have watched it or not, grab your girlfriends and enjoy a fun movie night!

19. Booksmart

Oprah Daily calls Booksmart “one of the best depictions of teen girl friendship we’ve ever seen on screen.” It is the story of Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever), who share a friendship that transcends space and time. It depicts the strength of the female bond.

Director Olivia Wilde is highly praised for the way she was able to illustrate what it feels like to be a teenager. Wilde dared to challenge people’s expectations of teen girls—prim, proper, and lady-like—and turned the tables by introducing us to two strong ladies who did not care at all about how the world viewed them.

What we love most about this movie is how it tackled sexuality. The teen years are a time when love often blossoms and kids start to wonder about whether they like girls or boys.

In this movie, Amy is openly gay. Although she has a very supportive best friend and parents, she still struggles to sort out her preferences.

We recommend Booksmart for teens and teens-at-heartwho are looking for a feel-good movie about friendship. If you are a parent, you can suggest it to your kids who are perhaps going through the same phase.

9 to 5 is a 1980 comedy film starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton. Directed by Colin Higgins and written by Patricia Resnick, it is the story of three women who dream of throwing out their sexist and egotistical boss, Frank Hart (played by Dabney Coleman).

The idea for the film came from one of Jane Fonda’s friends who formed an organization of working women. She found the members’ stories interesting and set about creating a film that depicted the real-life stories of women who struggle in their 9-to-5 lives, yet still thrive with the help of their fellow working women.

In an article by People that listed 15 reasons why 9 to 5 is still worth watching, even after so many years, it says that “women are better off helping each other.” We absolutely agree, an think that this movie is a must-watch for working adults.

The problems presented by the movie are still relevant today, especially for the working class. But with the help of friends and workmates, life becomes more fun and interesting, despite any struggles in the workplace.

21. Mean Girls

Mean Girls is a star-studded movie with Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried taking on the lead roles. It is the story of a girl named Cady who leaves her comfort zone and enters the “real world” for the first time.

The movie tackles real and plastic friendships. Real friendship is demonstrated through the bond between Janis (Lizzy Caplan), Damian (Daniel Franzese), and Cady, while plastic friendship is illustrated in the characters of Regina (McAdams), Gretchen (Chabert), Karen (Seyfried), and Cady. Basically, the movie is all about what real and true friendship should be.

Mean Girls is a fun, feel-good movie to share with your friends on a Friday night. It has just the right amount of comedy, drama, and fun for a wonderful time with your besties.

22. The First Wives Club

The First Wives Club is a movie about friendship and female empowerment. Directed by Hugh Wilson and based on Olivia Goldsmith’s novel of the same name, it stars Diane Keaton, Bette Midler, and Goldie Hawn as three women seeking revenge on their ex-husbands who left them for other women.

The film had mixed reviews from movie critics. Some commended it for being stunning and bold, while others found the focus on revenge to be unappealing. If there is one thing that makes this movie interesting, however, it is the power of friendship. The main characters all share a bond that transcends the bounds of time.

We recommend this movie for adult friends who haven’t seen each other in a long time.

23. Steel Magnolias

Steel Magnolias is a 1989 comedy-drama film starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, and Dolly Parton. It is an adaptation of Robert Harling’s play that bears the same name, with the main plot revolving around a dying girl and her friends. The story is partly based on the life of Harling’s sister, who died due to complications from type 1 diabetes.

What this movie teaches us about friendship is that there is no use in trying to hide things from your friends. No matter what you say or do, they will see right through you. They know when you have problems and they will be there to solve them with you.

The title of the movie is said to be a symbol of both toughness and delicateness. Just like the characters in the movie, you and your friends can be as delicate as a magnolia flower but also be as tough as steel.

24. Girls Trip

Girls Trip has a powerhouse cast including Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Queen Latifah, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The storyline is written by Tracy Oliver and Kenya Barris, who based the script on their personal experiences. The movie follows the story of four friends who go on a trip to New Orleans after many years of not being able to see each other.

According to reviews, if you want to learn about black female friendship, then this is the movie to watch. Although it has the typical premise of friends going on a vacation to have a fun time, it  also has other elements to consider. In addition the stars of the movie are great alone and even better together.

For girls and women who are looking for a movie that captures their rowdy behavior during a girls’ trip, you might find this movie highly relatable. We suggest watching it with your friends on or before a scheduled out-of-town trip.

25. Toy Story

You likely grew up watching the Toy Story franchise, so you are probably familiar with the story of Andy, Woody, Buzz, and the whole gang—and you will undoubtedly agree that it is far more than mere story about toys secretly talking to each other.

Toy Story teaches us many things, the most important of which is friendship. Once you watch this animated film, you will learn that the best of bonds sometimes arise from the most unimaginable circumstances. Look at how Woody and Buzz became each other’s best friends, even though they didn’t get off to a good start.

Just like the friendship that Andy shares with his toys and the friendship that each of his toys has with each other, real friends are always for keeps. Friends will always be there for you, no matter how long it has been since you’ve seen each other. Even when you part ways, you know that you will always be in each other’s hearts and minds.

By the way, here are the Amazon links for Toy Story 2 , Toy Story 3 , and Toy Story 4 . Watch the whole series while you’re at it!

26. Stand By Me

Stand By Me is a coming-of-age tale set in the 1950s. Four friends set out to try to find a missing boy and run into obstacles during the entire journey. They are slowed down and discouraged by older, teenage boys trying to beat them to the find. They also are their own worst enemies and deal with constant disagreement and fighting within their group.

This movie deals with friendships, teasing, bullying to some degree, and learning how to overcome one's inner demons. The boys learn a lot about each other as well as themselves. By banding together and staying strong throughout their long journey, they are able to achieve their goals and feel good about themselves and what they're able to accomplish.

With an all-star cast of young actors such as River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Will Wheaton, Jerry O' Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland, you can't go wrong enjoying this movie about friends being brought closer together through adversity and a common goal .

27. Back to the Future

Back to the Future is set in the mid-80s with the incredible Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd teaching us that the best friendships aren't always within your same peer group. You can often be the best of friends with younger or older people . Sometimes the age difference can span decades.

The story begins with Marty McFly (Fox) helping Dr. Emmett Brown (Lloyd) with his time machine experiment. Doc has built a time machine out of a DeLorean car and Marty is accidentally transported back to 1955, where Doc had intended to travel.

Marty finds himself stuck in 1955 without any plutonium to fuel his return trip home.

Marty figures that the only way to get back to 1985 is to befriend Doc in 1955. However, he runs into his mother and father as teenagers and sets off a series of events that will negatively affect him and Doc in 1985.

The story progresses as Marty becomes friends with his future father, George, and helps him win the hand of his mother, Lorraine. It's also wonderful to see the bond of friendship between Marty and Doc, despite their age differences. This is my favorite movie of all time.

28. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a story about a teenager named Ferris (Matthew Broderick) who decides to take a day off from school. Set in the Chicago area, Ferris convinces his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) to come along with him.

Cameron is not thrilled with the idea of skipping school or even leaving his house but reluctantly agrees to go with Ferris and his girlfriend Sloan.

Most of the movie is a cat and mouse-type adventure of Ferris and his friends, staying one step ahead of Principal Rooney and Ferris' older sister Jeannie. Rooney does not want to be made a fool of, and Jeannie finds it unfair that her brother gets away with so much.

By the end, the friendship of the three main characters is strengthened and they've had one heck of an adventure together.

29. American Pie

American Pie is a raunchy, teenage comedy about four friends who make a pact to lose their virginity before the end of their senior year of high school. The four friends couldn't be more different, yet they are the best of friends.

The friend group is comprised of Kevin, the average Joe with a girlfriend, Oz, the handsome athlete, Jim, the studious, awkward kid, and Finch, the uptight hipster type, who can't use the bathroom at school.

The friends try their best throughout the school year to progress with the ladies toward their goals, with hilarious results that follow. We meet other incredibly funny characters, such as Michelle, the bank geez, Nadia, the beautiful foreign exchange student, Stiffler, the hyperactive jock-jerk, and, of course, Stiffler's mom.

Again, this movie is definitely raunchy and not for the faint of heart. But you'll see many examples of amazing friendships while laughing yourself to tears. This one is not one to watch though with your small children.

30. Superbad

Speaking of raunchy teen movies, Superbad hits the same level as American Pie and maybe even surpasses it. Starring the hilarious Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Seth Rogen, Superbad is one of the earliest and funniest movies written by Seth Rogen.

He was originally supposed to play the part of Jonah's character, Seth, but was too old by the time they finally got this move into production.

The story follows 3 friends, Seth, Evan, and Fogle (known as McLovin') as they plot to hook up with some girls at a big party being thrown by the girl Seth likes. Jules invites them and asks them to bring alcohol, a task they take very seriously.

They devise a well-thought-out plan and put the plan into motion. But so many things go wrong.

The side-splitting scenes are so funny, but it's the growth between friends who are changing throughout the movie as they prepare to be separated for the first time in their lives by college . The way they interact, have falling outs, and forgive each other to become close again makes for a movie deserving to be watched by any set of close friends.

31. A League of Their Own

A League of Their Own is a wonderful family movie that tells the tale of a women's baseball league. This is based on a true story when many of the regular major league players were off fighting in World War 2. The major league owners decided to bankroll a small women's league to entertain people and make money during the war.

Scouts are sent around the country to find talent and one of them discovers Dottie (Geena Davis). Dottie is beautiful, talented, and uninterested in playing in the league. Her sister Kit desperately wants to leave their small town and is told she'd be added to the draft if she can talk Dottie into playing. Dottie reluctantly agrees and they're on their way.

They meet their teammates after the draft and become close friends. They are coached by their alcoholic former-major league player Jimmy, who treats their league like it's a joke and is difficult to deal with. Once Dottie is recognized as one of the best players and becomes the face of the league, her sister gets jealous.

This leads to friction between the two and Kit is traded to a rival team. After Dottie's husband returns from the war, she retires from the team.

With stars like Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell, A League of Their Own became a feel-good sports movie for the ages. If you are a fan of sports movies that are funny and touching and focused on the bonds of teammates and friendship, check it out.

Sidney helps Peter gain business by putting up a number of somewhat risqué and embarrassing billboards around town. Peter is angry about this and demands they be taken down. They have a falling out over this and Peter once again has nobody to be in the wedding with him.

They finally work things out in the end and have a wonderful wedding with Peter's new-found best friend, other new friends, and his lovely bride.

33. Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Fast Times at Ridgemont High is the quintessential early 80s teen movie about a number of groups of friends. Set mainly in the backdrop of the local mall, a high school, and first-job type places of employment (particularly stressful for Brad) , the kids interact and their friendships are tested.

Mark and Stacy are high school sophomores who heed advice from their slightly older, more experienced friends. Mark has a crush on Stacy and is advised on how to handle asking her out by his friend Mike Damone. Stacy's friend Linda advises her to date older men and pushes her away from Mark and toward another older guy.

Stacy ends up dating a couple of older boys and even hooks up with Damone, which causes friction between him and Mark. Stacy's older brother, Brad takes her to get an abortion and comforts her after she confides she's pregnant.

Toward the end of the movie, she realizes that a nice guy like Mark is worth giving a chance to.

There are a number of other memorable characters. The stoner surfer guy, Jeff Spicoli, played by Sean Penn, who's tormented by his high school teacher Mr. Hand. Football player Charles Jefferson, played by Forest Whitaker.

A number of actors in their earliest roles appear as well, such as Eric Stoltz, Nicolas Cage, and Anthony Edwards. This is one of the best teen movies of the early 80s.

34. The Outsiders

Based on the novel by S.E, Hinton, The Outsiders features an all-star cast of some of the best young actors of the early 80s. The cast included C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, and Diane Lane.

The story follows the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers are the poorer kids from the wrong side of the tracks, while the Socs are the wealthier kids from the nicer area of town. They appear to be enemies and get into fights with each other. Ponyboy (Howell) and Johnny (Macchio) get jumped by a few Socs at the beginning of the movie.

Johnny stabs and kills one of the Socs in self-defense to stop them from drowning Ponyboy. The two boys go on the run to avoid arrest and are met at their hideout by Dally (Dillon) who brings them food and a book to read.

While out driving, they return to their church hideout to find it on fire with children trapped inside. They heroically save the children, but Johnny is injured, suffering a broken back and burns. They return to town where Johnny is charged with murder in the stabbing of the Soc, and Ponyboy is threatened with being sent to a boy's home.

The Socs call for a rumble with the Greasers to avenge Bob's death, and the Greasers end up victorious.

The movie does an amazing job showing the bonds made between friends as well as gang-type groups. It deals with the tragedy of losing friends to early deaths and how that affects their social groups. This movie and the novel are both worth checking out.

35. The Goonies

The Goonies is an amazing 80s movie set in Astoria, Oregon. It follows a group of kids called “The Goonies” who are all about to have to move from their neighborhood as its being developed and turned into a golf course. Mikey is determined to find the legendary pirate ship of One-Eyed Willy, a story told to Mikey (Sean Astin) by his father. He is a natural leader and often talks his friends into continuing on.

As they set out to find this ship and the treasure it surely holds, they encounter a number of obstacles along the way. A recently escaped bank robber, Jake Fratelli, is holed up in an abandoned restaurant with his brother Francis and their mother, Ma Fratelli.

The Fratellis discover the kids' plan to find the treasure and follow them to steal it for themselves. One of the Goonies, Chunk, is captured by the Fratellis and befriends their larger, somewhat deformed brother, Sloth.

The Goonies end up finding the ship but get captured by the Fratellis. Chunk and Sloth show up to save the day, and the ship is accidentally launched when the Fratellis set off a booby trap. The kids are reunited with their parents and lament that they had no chance to grab any of the treasure.

They discover though that some of the jewels were still in Mikey's marble bag, and their homes are saved from the developers with enough money to pay them off.  The movie is hilarious and full of many action scenes. The young cast featured Corey Feldman and Josh Brolin in addition to Sean Astin.

The Goonies is a highly entertaining movie about friendship and the lengths friends will go to in order to save each other and work toward a common goal.

36. Sex and the City

Sex and the City was originally a television series starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon. It started airing in 1998 and ended in 2004. The movie version was a continuation/spin-off released in 2008. As obviously stated in the title, the story focuses on social issues relating to sex and femininity.

We recommend this movie if you and your friends are looking for equal parts comedy and drama. You and your inner circle probably talk about sex and relationships a lot, so you will likely relate to the conversations in this film.

37. A Dog’s Purpose

This is actually one of our favorites on this list. Who said that only humans can be your best friends? As the saying goes, “A dog is a man’s best friend.” This is a movie about reincarnation , but each time the dog gets reincarnated, he finds a new place to stay and a new person to love and cherish forever.

We highly suggest checking out this film, particularly if you are looking for something cute, sweet, and funny. Watch it with your kids, the whole family, or your circle of friends.

38. The Sweetest Thing

The Sweetest Thing is the story of three best friends—one who just got heartbroken, one who is a divorce lawyer and serious about life, and one who is an interior designer and prefers things as they should be. This romantic comedy is equal parts laughter and friendship feels. If you have a group of friends with different personalities, you will surely enjoy watching this film together.

39. Someone Great

Watch Movie on Netflix

Who do you talk to after a break-up? Best friends, of course! Someone Great is a movie about moving on, but it is also movie about a friendship. Jenny (Gina Rodriguez), Blair (Brittany Snow), and Erin (DeWanda Wise) know exactly what it means to be “someone great” for each other. You won’t find this movie on any other platform, as it is a Netflix original. Call your girlfriends over for a Netflix night and dive in!

We hope that the list we provided above can help you pick the best films for you and your friends to enjoy on movie night. You can watch them alone too, of course, but we recommend watching them with your friends or family members so you have someone to share your feelings with. Happy watching!

Finally, if you want to increase your happiness and life satisfaction, then watch this free video that details the 7-minute habit for planning your day to focus on what's important .

34 Movies That Will Make You Want to Get Off the Couch and See the World

From "The Holiday" to "Romancing the Stone" to "Eat Pray Love," these travel movies will inspire some serious wanderlust.

friends trip movies hollywood

There's nothing like an epic on-screen adventure to get you acquainted with some place new and dreaming up an enviable vacation itinerary. For me (and basically all my childhood friends), this first happened following a viewing of Disney's "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" back in 2003, when Hilary Duff's character traveled to Rome to live out every teen's parent-free European fantasy. Though I've graduated to more mature travel movies over the last 18 years, one thing hasn't changed: films with gorgeous backdrops give me an unruly case of wanderlust.

From classics like "Around the World in 80 Days" and "Roman Holiday" to modern masterpieces such as "Wild" and "Crazy Rich Asians," travel films tend to ignite a longing for freedom and excitement. Maybe it's the sight of beaches on your screen triggering a phenomenon known as Blue Mind , or maybe watching a couple of pals take to the open road for a life changing road trip just makes you want to feel unconfined. Whatever it is, sometimes a travel film is all you need to provoke that feeling. That's why we've rounded up, in no particular order, 34 of the best travel movies that inspire wanderlust. Maybe they'll be cause for a change of scenery — or maybe they'll incite the adventure of a lifetime.

'Thelma & Louise' (1991)

Widely regarded as one of the best road trip movies of all time, this buddy film follows best friends Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) as they drive through the American Southwest after Louise kills a man in Arkansas.

'The Holiday' (2006)

A Hollywood movie trailer producer (Cameron Diaz) and a London reporter (Kate Winslet) decide to switch homes for a few weeks after finding out their respective boyfriends have been cheating on them. The results offer enough glamor shots of Los Angeles and cozy footage of England's countryside to make you want to pack up and head to either city immediately.

'Crazy Rich Asians' (2018)

Though this movie revolves around the conflict between New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and her boyfriend's wealthy family, "Crazy Rich Asians" could pass as a tourism film for Singapore . If the Southeast Asian country wasn't on your bucket list before, this film's dazzling shots of Singapore, specifically the acclaimed Marina Bay Sands Hotel , may convince you.

'Wild' (2014)

Based on a true story, "Wild" sees Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) hike more than a thousand miles from California to Washington on the Pacific Crest Trail following her divorce and the death of her mother. On her journey, Cheryl treks through the Mojave Desert , the Sierra Nevada, and Mount Hood National Forest while reflecting on her life.

'Eat Pray Love' (2010)

After her divorce, Elizabeth (Julia Roberts) sets off to explore the world with hopes of finding herself in the process. Elizabeth's inspiring and uplifting journey takes her — and viewers — to Italy , India , and Indonesia where she discovers the pleasure of nourishment, prayer, and romance.

'La La Land' (2016)

Admittedly, this musical doesn't feature much traveling (save for a brief road trip to Mia's hometown in Nevada), but the dreamy, oversaturated shots of Los Angeles in nearly every scene are enough to make anyone want to book a flight to the City of Angels.

'Before Sunrise' (1995)

Two strangers meet aboard a train from Budapest. Jesse (Ethan Hawke) is hoping to catch a flight home to the United States while Céline (Julie Delpy) is en route to Paris . Instead of sticking to their plans, the two disembark in Vienna and spend the entire night exploring the city and falling in love. A viewing of this movie will leave you longing for an epic adventure in the picturesque Austrian capital .

'National Lampoon’s Vacation' (1983)

National Lampoon 's classic comedy series is now six films strong, but it was 1983's "Vacation" that started it all. Unlike the franchise's most famous film, "Christmas Vacation," the original movie sees the Griswolds actually hit the road for a trip to Walley World, an amusement park several states away. After you watch Chevy Chase's hilarious hijinks unfold in this film, let sequels "European Vacation" and "Vegas Vacation" inspire further travels.

'The Darjeeling Limited' (2007)

After the death of their father, three estranged brothers (Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman) decide to hop aboard a train in India called The Darjeeling Limited to reconnect and experience spiritual self-discovery. Viewers catch glimpses of the Indian countryside, Hindu temples, and eventually the Himalayas — but not without a few jokes along the way.

'Up' (2009)

Arguably the most heart-wrenching animated film of all time, "Up" earns a spot on our list thanks to adorably grumpy widower Carl Fredricksen's determination to fulfill his own wanderlust. With the help of thousands of balloons and a young sidekick named Russell, Carl and his house soar across the world on an incredible journey that culminates at Paradise Falls (based on Angel Falls in Venezuela).

'Raiders of the Lost Ark' (1981)

"Raiders" kicks off the iconic Indiana Jones series with a quest to find the fabled Ark of the Covenant. On his journey, Indy (Harrison Ford) makes stops in Nepal , Egypt , and the Aegean Sea , and, of course, famously runs from a giant rolling boulder in a temple in Peru . Follow up this film with its sequels, "Temple of Doom" (1984), "Last Crusade" (1989), and "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (2008), to see Indy travel to Jordan , the Amazon jungle, and beyond.

'Mamma Mia!' (2008)

Few movies offer the kind of gorgeously colorful beach imagery "Mamma Mia!" and its 2018 sequel, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" provide. If you haven't seen the films, you likely know them as "the movies with all the ABBA songs." But if you have seen them, you know they're actually about three men who travel to the impossibly beautiful, albeit fictional, Greek island of Kalokairi, each believing they're the father of a young bride-to-be.

'Nomadland' (2020)

After losing her job in the town of Empire, Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) decides to sell her belongings, buy a van, and drive across the country working odd jobs. Fern travels through deserts, small towns, and nomad communes where she works, makes new friends, and learns about life. If you've ever fantasized about dropping everything and taking to the open road, "Nomadland" will probably either convince or deter you.

'Romancing the Stone' (1984)

When New York City-based romance novelist Joan Wilder's sister is kidnapped in Cartagena , Joan (Kathleen Turner) ends up on a rescue-mission-turned-treasure-hunt with adventure-seeking Jack T. Colton (Michael Douglas). Don't be surprised if a viewing of this movie makes you want to trade in your annual beach vacation for a wild ride through the Colombian jungle .

'Paris, Je T’aime' (2006)

Paris, Je T'aime is different from the other films on this list in that it's not one film — it's 18 short films that all feature Paris as a central theme. Because the project is made up of 18 different stories in 18 different arrondissements around the city, viewers get a true, unfiltered sense of Paris, and may even find themselves inspired to visit lesser-known locales in the City of Light.

'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' (1994)

If you've ever longed to take a laughter-fueled road trip with your best friends, this film is worth a watch. In the flick, pals Tick (Hugo Weaving), Adam (Guy Pearce), and Bernadette (Terence Stamp) head out on a cross-country road trip through the Australian outback to perform their successful drag act in a new town. The trio takes up residence in an oversized tour bus called Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in this fun, ahead-of-its-time dramedy.

'RV' (2006)

While plenty of road trip movies have been made over the years, "RV" might be the only one that takes place in, well, an RV . Though the main characters in this movie face more bad luck than fun, family bonding, the film does feature generous desert , mountain , and wilderness scenery, as well as an all-star cast (Robin Williams, Kristin Chenoweth, Cheryl Hines, and Josh Hutcherson are just a few that appear).

'Point Break' (2015)

Yes, we're talking about the "Point Break" remake rather than the original film from 1991, but hear us out: the imagery in this movie inspires some serious wanderlust. The story takes viewers to several of the wildest places on Earth (Mexico's Cave of Swallows, Venezuela's Angel Falls, etc.) and though the plot is slightly different from the original (think eco-terrorism rather than bank robberies), it is quiet possibly the most visually stimulating travel movie ever made.

'Girls Trip' (2017)

When was the last time you took a trip with just your core group of girlfriends? A quick watch of this comedy will have you planning your next gal pal getaway faster than you can say "PTO." In the film, a group of friends (Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, Regina Hall, and Jada Pinkett Smith) head to New Orleans , but you'll be ready to travel anywhere with your best buds after watching "Girls Trip" — even if it's just to the next town over.

'The Way' (2010)

After his son is killed walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route to Galicia, Spain, Tom Avery (Martin Sheen) sets out on the trail himself to retrieve his son's body. Along the way, Tom meets several other travelers who are walking the trail in hopes of changing their own lives for one reason or another. This inspiring film may just persuade you to make the famed pilgrimage yourself, or to book a similarly reflective trip.

'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' (2005)

If you were a teen or pre-teen in 2005, you have likely seen this movie and its 2008 sequel, and can attest that both inspire major wanderlust. The first film follows best friends Carmen, Lena, Bridget, and Tibby (who share a magical pair of jeans that fits them all perfectly) as they spend a summer in different parts of the world. Lena (Alexis Bledel) travels to Santorini, Greece , which makes for some seriously dreamy backdrops. In the sequel, the whole gang heads to Greece, but not before Bridget (Blake Lively) spends some time in Turkey .

'Up in the Air' (2009)

This George Clooney-led comedy-drama makes business travel and airports look glamorous — hospitable, even. Boasting just as many cityscape shots as it does plane scenes, "Up in the Air" will have you longing to be in the skies, jet setting off to some place new. Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga also star in this critically-acclaimed film about a man who lives out of a suitcase.

'Around the World in 80 Days' (1956)

If this classic adventure film doesn't inspire daydreams of traveling somewhere new, we're not sure what will. In 1872, Englishman Phileas Fogg makes a bet with several members of his gentleman's club that he can travel around the globe in just 80 days. On his journey, he and sidekick Jean Passepartout bring viewers along as they travel by gas balloon to France , Spain , Italy , India, Hong Kong , the United States , and more.

'Home Alone 2: Lost in New York' (1992)

The Home Alone movies usually fall under the comedy or holiday categories, but if you think about it, the second installment in the series is totally a travel movie. The film does a fantastic job of showing off the glamorous side of New York City , the place young Kevin McCallister accidentally ends up while the rest of his family vacations in Florida. From shots of the Rockefeller Christmas tree to the Manhattan skyline , this film is sure to inspire a trip to the Big Apple.

'Under the Tuscan Sun' (2003)

You won't find shots of northern Italy as serene as the ones in this feel-good film about independence, love, and friendship. After losing everything in her divorce, American writer Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) suddenly finds herself beginning a new life in the small Tuscan town of Cortona. And if you're anything like us, Googling "Tuscan villas for sale" will become a regular part of your life after watching this film.

'Angels & Demons' (2009)

Though "Angels & Demons" is classified as a thriller, it'll definitely make you want to head to Rome and dig up some history, both figuratively and literally. Based on the Dan Brown novel of the same name, the story follows Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) as he discovers secrets of the Vatican and faces off against the supposed Illuminati. If you're a fan, check out other Dan Brown adventure travel films, "The Da Vinci Code" (2006) and "Inferno" (2016).

'Easy Rider' (1969)

Our list features travel by plane, train , RV, and even hot air balloon , but "Easy Rider" is the only movie that follows a journey via motorcycle. In the film, drug smugglers Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper) ride from Los Angeles to New Orleans in hopes of reveling at Mardi Gras to celebrate their latest score. On their journey, they stop in several small towns, make a few friends, and unsuccessfully try to evade trouble.

'Out of Africa' (1985)

If Africa doesn't currently have a spot on your bucket list, this film might make you rethink that. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford star in this true story about Karen Blixen, a Danish woman who moves to Nairobi with her new husband, and builds a life there despite their many marital issues. "Out of Africa" features sweeping panoramic shots of Nairobi in nearly every scene, leaving it no wonder the drama won seven Academy Awards, including one for Best Cinematography.

'Johnson Family Vacation' (2004)

This family comedy starring Cedric the Entertainer, Vanessa Williams, and Solange Knowles follows the mildly dysfunctional Johnsons as they road trip to their family reunion in Missouri. On the drive, the family hilariously encounters just about every road trip cliché, from picking up a problematic hitchhiker to running out of gas, before making it to the reunion and performing a musical number to nab the coveted Family of the Year trophy.

'Midnight in Paris' (2011)

Set in present-day Paris , this Oscar-winning film is typically a favorite among art and literature lovers. At midnight each night, screenwriter Gil (Owen Wilson) is transported back in time through different eras of Paris, where he befriends Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Pablo Picasso, and even strikes up a romance with a 1920s woman named Adriana. The film offers plenty of inspiration for a culturally rich trip to France.

'The Parent Trap' (1998)

"The Parent Trap" is another film that may not immediately stand out as a travel flick, but once you take into account the film's many settings ( London , San Francisco, Napa Valley , and the northeastern U.S.), it's easy to see that this family classic has been a travel film all along. Plus, the main characters spend lots of time on planes, boats, and camping trips throughout the movie.

'The Talented Mr. Ripley' (1999)

Carefully spliced between disturbing revelations and suspenseful plot twists are luxurious shots of Italian beaches in this Matt Damon-led film. When Tom Ripley (Damon) is paid to travel to Italy and bring Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) back to the States by Dickie's father, Tom ends up befriending — and later becoming obsessed with — Dickie. Despite the plot quickly darkening, viewers are treated to bright, colorful scenes in Rome and glamorous seaside villages .

'Roman Holiday' (1953)

Romance? Check. Stunning visuals of Rome ? Check. Audrey Hepburn? Check. This classic travel comedy lands at the top of many movie buffs' all-time favorite lists, and for good reason. Bored with her mundane life as a European princess while on a trip to Rome, Ann (Hepburn) ditches her duties and hits the town with journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck). The two take viewers on a tour of the Eternal City and fall in love in the process.

'Pee-wee’s Big Adventure' (1985)

Before you roll your eyes, take a moment to acknowledge that this film essentially sends happy-go-lucky Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) on the great American road trip in search of his stolen bicycle. In this comedy for adults and children alike, Pee-wee stops at the Alamo, the Cabazon Dinosaur park in California , and Hollywood . Traveling by car, truck, and train, Pee-wee befriends a biker gang, competes in a rodeo, and of course, famously dances to "Tequila" before his journey is through.

Here are 17 films that do just that. So, cuddle up with a friend and enjoy!

The Best Man (1999)

Streaming on hulu.

Personally, I think this is about the worst group of friends ever, who are probably all better off just calling it quits. But this movie is so classic and so funny that you just can’t miss it. Life is good for Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs). He has a great girlfriend, he’s about to publish a guaranteed best-selling novel, and he just got invited to be the best man at his college friend turned NFL star Lance’s (Morris Chestnut) wedding to his other college friend, Mia. There’s just one problem. Harper’s current girlfriend is facing competition from his ex Jordan, and Jordan has just read an advance copy of the book, which contains secrets about Harper, Lance, and Mia that threaten to ruin the entire wedding.

Spirited Away (2001)

Streaming on hbo max.

In this animated Japanese film, after magic turns 10-year-old Chihiro’s parents into pigs, she meets a new friend, a boy named Haku, in the strange spirit world she finds herself in. Once there, Chihiro navigates the spirit realm, meeting friends and foes alike, until Haku finally helps bring her back to her parents.

Girls Trip (2017)

Four college best friends have drifted apart over the years, but in a bid to bring them all back together, Ryan (Regina Hall) — an ultra-famous lifestyle mogul — takes them all on a girls’ trip to the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, where she is the keynote speaker. Naturally, hijinks ensue once the friends (Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish, in a star-making turn) reconnect with their college selves a little too much, causing drunken, hilarious, and sometimes sexy chaos all over the Big Easy.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

This movie elegantly depicts the beauty and frustration of close friendship groups, and how those friendships can help people change their lives. High school freshman Charlie (Logan Lerman) doesn’t have any friends. But then two bright, cool, free-spirited classmates — Sam (Emma Watson) and her stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller) — welcome Charlie into their quirky and tight-knit friend group. Charlie goes from being a wallflower to learning about love, music, and art and developing his passion for writing. But Charlie’s trauma is hard to escape, and soon he finds himself having to face some painful memories and learn who he is without his friends.

Bridesmaids (2011)

Streaming on apple tv+ and amazon prime.

This raucous comedy is about the friendship between bride-to-be Lillian (Maya Rudolph) and her childhood best friend and absolute train wreck of a bridesmaid, Annie (Kristen Wiig). Since falling on hard financial times, Annie’s life hasn’t been going very well — professionally or romantically. So, once her best friend gets engaged, she tries to be happy for her. But when Annie fears she’s being replaced by Lillian’s new friend Helen, who is filthy rich and has a seemingly perfect life, Annie tries to be the perfect bridesmaid, failing in ways that make for a series of hilarious scenes loaded with secondhand embarrassment.

The Toy Story Films (1995, 1999, 2010, 2019)

Streaming on disney+.

Pretty much every Disney movie is, in some way, about friendship. But Toy Story stands out because of its unique premise and endurance. With four movies and a devoted fan base that spans generations, this epic film series about living toys and the bonds they form with their humans and one another is one of the most tender, hilarious sagas out there. For more than 20 years, we’ve been captivated by the friendship and adventures of Woody the Cowboy, Buzz Lightyear, and their ragtag group of plush and plastic buddies. Once you watch the films for yourself, you’ll understand why.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

Streaming on netflix.

In the Arizona desert, college best friends and one-time lovers Jules (Julia Roberts) and Michael (Dermot Mulroney) made a pledge: If they weren’t both married by age 28, they’d marry each other. Now, four days before her 28th birthday, Jules finds out that Michael is getting married to a preppy, rich 20-year-old college junior named Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Naturally, Jules suddenly realizes that she’s been in love with Michael all along and vows to stop the wedding. Unfortunately, Jules is willing to do just about anything — no matter how cringey or grimy — to stop her best friend from walking down that aisle, even when Kimmy names Jules maid of honor. Everyone has strong opinions about Jules; they either love her or hate her. But regardless of how you feel, it’ll be hard to resist shedding a little tear at the sweet ending.

Frances Ha (2012)

Directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Greta Gerwig — who is now a formidably accomplished director herself — Frances Ha is about the titular character’s professional and friendship struggles, which intensify when her roommate and best friend, Sophie (Mickey Sumner), moves from their shared Brooklyn apartment to an expensive home in Tribeca, leaving Frances basically homeless as she couch-surfs between other friends’ houses. As Frances’ life gets worse, Sophie’s only seems to get better, which causes confusion and pain between the two separated friends.

Thoroughbreds (2017)

This film is strange, weird, and darkly hilarious. The friendship between childhood friends Lily (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Amanda (Olivia Cooke) doesn’t really make any sense, but that’s what makes it so compelling. On paper, these upper-class Connecticut girls’ paths couldn’t have diverged further. Lily is a high-achieving boarding-school student with the perfect internship. Amanda is shunned by the entire town and seems to be disturbingly lacking in feelings or empathy. But the two friends rekindle their bond, eventually carrying out a plan that will change both their lives in surprising ways.

Booksmart (2019)

Academically obsessed best friends Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) haven’t had much fun during high school. But it’s for good reason. All the missed romances, hookups, and nights of partying are worth it. Why? Because they’re going to the Ivy League while their classmates are probably all headed for failure. But when Amy and Molly learn that the party kids have gotten into the same schools they have, they reevaluate their entire high school experience, leaving them committed to having one epically wild night together before graduation. This buddy comedy is raucous and hilarious from beginning to end, and it’s especially refreshing to take the genre out of its usual pattern of starring straight guys.

My Girl (1991)

Seriously, this is one of the most devastating movies you will ever watch. It traumatized an entire generation. Okay, I realize I’m not exactly selling it very well, but My Girl is devastating and wonderful. It’s about 11-year-old Vada, who mourns the mother she never met, since she died giving birth to Vada. But she has a good life, even if it is a little strange that she lives in a funeral home run by her father (Dan Aykroyd). Tomboyish Vada is different from the other kids, but her best friend, Thomas (Macaulay Culkin), is loyal and sweet. Vada’s coming of age is complicated by romantic feelings, but she quickly learns important lessons about love, family, loss, and friendship.

Blindspotting (2018)

Streaming on amazon prime.

Collin (Daveed Diggs) has only three days of probation left before he’s a completely free man. But when he witnesses something dangerous, all that is put in jeopardy. With his wild and unstable best friend, Miles (Rafael Casal), Collin has to stay safe all while reckoning with the issues of race and class that have consumed their hometown of Oakland, California.

9 to 5 (1980)

This workplace satire follows three strong women (Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin) who are sick and tired of their narcissistic, overworking, sexist boss demeaning them. After some confusion involving rat poison and a stolen corpse, these three secretaries form a bond and decide to kidnap their boss and simply run the business themselves, making equitable changes regarding pay, childcare, and fair working hours. It’s a hilarious and silly movie, but it’s also an astute commentary on labor rights and gender equality. Also, Dolly Parton’s song “9 to 5” is an absolute classic, perfect for singing in the shower. This movie really has everything.

Mean Girls (2004)

Most of the friendships in this movie should not, under any circumstances, be emulated. But they are entertaining and pretty accurately capture how high school kids — and even best friends — treat one another. Mean Girls is one of director Tina Fey’s greatest triumphs, portraying awkward, homeschooled Cady’s (Lindsay Lohan) slow ascent — or descent, depending on your perspective — into the most popular clique of girls at her new high school, led by the vicious and beautiful Regina George (Rachel McAdams). In her quest for popularity, Cady might end up losing some true friends, and herself.

Waiting to Exhale (1995)

You know that classic meme of Angela Bassett in her lacy nightgown, standing in front of a burning car? That iconic scene comes from this movie, adapted from Terry McMillan’s best-selling novel. Four Black women friends in Phoenix, Arizona, bond over the hurdles in their lives, mostly with men. Bassett’s character is left adrift when her cruel, philandering husband leaves her for his mistress. But her other two friends, Savannah (Whitney Houston) and Robin (Lela Rochon), are longing for the married men they’re in love with to leave their wives and begin real relationships with them. Gloria (Loretta Devine) is tired of being neglected and lets herself fall for a new love. This movie is about how, in the face of being objectified and discarded by men who don’t see them, women hold themselves and their friends up, bringing joy and happiness even with tears and frustration.

Now and Then (1995)

Four childhood friends — Samantha (Gaby Hoffmann, Demi Moore), Roberta (Christina Ricci, Rosie O’Donnell), Teeny (Thora Birch, Melanie Griffith), and Chrissy (Ashleigh Aston Moore, Rita Wilson) — reunite in their small Indiana hometown as Chrissy is about to give birth to her first child. As they come back together, each one so different from the others, a series of flashbacks takes us back to a formative summer in their lives, when the group became obsessed with solving a murder/ghost mystery. It’s a heartwarming movie, but it’s appreciated for the weight and depth it gives not only to childhood friendships, but to the complex interiority and strength of young girls.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (which translates as “Life Will Never Come Again”) is a heartwarming buddy comedy that handles some pretty deep themes. Kabir (Abhay Deol) is getting married and, instead of a bachelor party, he takes his two childhood friends Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) and Imran (Farhan Akhtar) on a three-week road-trip adventure across Spain, with each friend choosing a fear-defying sport for them to do together. In Spain, workaholic Arjun meets and falls in love with Laila (Katrina Kaif), changing his perspective on life and love forever. Meanwhile, Kabir struggles with his impending nuptials, and Imran seeks out his biological father. In the end, the trip shows all three friends that life is too short and too precious not to seize the moment and go after what you want, and who you love.

25 Great Movies About Friendship That Are Worth Viewing

Friendship is one of the most important things in life. It is also a major theme and inspiration for beautiful and diverse films. From war movies to family comedies; they all draw some of the plot line’s backbone from this unique feeling that is friendship. Remember Red and Andy Dufresne sitting on the rooftop and drinking beer?

Remember Thelma and Louise in the car driving fast to an unknown destination? Remember the steel workers from the Pennsylvania hanging out in the bar having a sing-along to “Can’t Take My Eyes of You”? All of those memorable movie images remind us of the sheer joy of being with the people you love. We all love our friends even when we hate them; it’s the same in film as it is in life.

Here is a list of 25 movies about friendship that are worth at least one viewing. The films are in chronological order.

1. Midnight Cowboy (John Schlesinger, 1969)

The controversial “Midnight Cowboy” made a star out of Jon Voight and turned Dustin Hoffman into a serious actor. The story follows Joe Buck (Jon Voight), a young Texan who quits his job as a dish washer and goes to New York to become a playboy.

There he meets small time hustler Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) and the two of them become a team. Trying to make it big in New York Joe and Ratso face one disappointment after another as Buck’s career as a gigolo seems to be going nowhere and Rizzo’s health is deteriorating by the day.

Some people accuse this film as being to graphic or psychedelic. Others praise it for exactly the same reasons. But people often look past the fact that it is a great movie about friendship and loyalty towards friends. The unlikely but strong bond between Joe Buck and Ratso Rizzo stands the test of time as one of world cinema’s greats. In the outskirts of society the two stick it out never abandoning each other even in the grimmest of conditions.

2. Husbands (John Cassavetes, 1970)

The master of minimalist cinema has pulled this one out of his hat. Casting, then unknowns, Peter Falk and Ben Gazzara alongside himself, Cassavetes made this film exactly the way he and his fans like it. The film is a powerful character study of three middle aged men who reunite at their friend’s funeral. It is there that they reconnect and their old friendship is reignited. It’s also there that the old feuds, jealousies and quarrels between them begin to resurface.

Harry (Ben Gazzara) is impulsive and aggressive. Archie (Peter Falk) is straightforward and always looking for an argument with one of the other two. Gus (John Cassavetes) is more of the quiet type but a little weird and somehow misunderstood. After facing the concept of mortality, alcohol and disagreements with their better halves the three, spontaneously, decide to go to London live one more adventure.

There they each meet woman with whom they end up spending the night. But the mindless enthusiasm from their so-called regained freedom makes the courtship of these three women akward and weird. Gus and Archie decide to go back home but Harry chooses to remain in London. In spite of the fact that their attempt to relive their younger days is a fiasco the bond between the three men never fades; more than that throughout the movie it becomes even stronger.

There is a wonderful, but kind of long, scene where the three are at the bar with some female friends and each them is taking turns in singing a song. The friendship conveyed in that scene is unparallelled and the cinéma vérité style in which it is shot makes the audience part of the singing competition.

Even when they are divided Gus and Archie wonder out loud what their friend is going to do without them. If you like Cassavetes give this movie a try. If you don’t know his work this is a very good introduction to his minimalistic, realist cinema.

3. American Graffiti (George Lucas, 1973)

This is the only non-SF made by George Lucas and it is so good that it makes you wonder why he didn’t do more films of this kind. It was the starting point for the careers of many actors that appear in it (including Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard and Harrison Ford). The film is a veritable piece of Americana and is hailed today as one of the best American youth films of all times.

In the early 60’s high school graduates and longtime friends Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) and Steve (Ron Howard) decide to have the night of their life before going off to college. Taking place in a typical USA small town it deals with all the troubles and joys of American teenagers at that time: having a girlfriend, having a car, going to college or getting a job, getting serious with your life or just keep partying to the day you die. When all said and done, this is an amazing film about loyalty and the importance of friends.

4. Soldaat Van Oranje (Paul Verhoeven, 1977)

This is one of Paul Verhoeven’s pre-Hollywood movies done in this native Holland. It was also the most expensive Dutch film at the time. The film follows a group of students who await the coming of World War II with different fears and expectations. Each of them has their own interpretation of the war and the role they must play and each of them hope that their contributions to this major event will change their lives and the fate of the country.

The film then splits into to following each member of the group and his role in the war. Some of them end up in the resistance others become collaborators. Erik (Rutger Hauer) and Guus (Jeroen Krabbe) go to England to fight alongside the allied forces. Alex (Derek De Lint) is at first drafted in the Dutch Army but after a brief period of time he joins the Germans as it is his belief that they will win the war.

Jan (Huib Rooymans) is a Jew and his life turns for the worse after he is captured by the SS. Even though the four men are separated at the beginning of the war chance still brings them together throughout the course of the film and those reunions make-up the film’s climaxes. Their lives may have followed very different paths but their friendship remains the same.

5. The Deer Hunter (Michael Cimino, 1978)

In everyone’s mind “The Deer Hunter” is a war film. But the fact of the matter is that Cimino’s film is so much more. For the first third of the film the word war is hardly mentioned. All the audience knows is that the three friends (Mike, Nick and Stevie) have volunteered for the Vietnam War and that they are set to leave after Stevie’s wedding.

Of course once they get to Vietnam they experience the horrors of war and nothing will ever be the same again, but in the first act of the film “The Deer Hunter” is a wonderful and touching film about friendship. The way the three of them, alongside Stan and Axel, interact, make jokes, play tricks on each other is just lovely and sometimes funny to watch. If it wasn’t for that gloomy feeling that something awful is going to happen this film just might be viewed as buddy film.

The elaborate hunting scene and the even more elaborated wedding scene show the different personalities of the three friends and how each of them manages to complete the lacking of the other. Mike (Robert De Niro) is a serious character who doesn’t kid around, Stevie (John Savage) is the conformist and Nick (Christopher Walken) is the dreamer soft-spoken member of the bunch.

There is a wonderful scene in the first act in which the two, inebriated and excited about the future, crash their friends bar while singing and dancing to the classic feel-good song “Can’t Take My Eyes of You”. That scene perfectly illustrates the importance of the friendship aspect of this film. Of course their friendship is put to the test by the war and its effects but, as the film shows, not even war can bring down such a strong feeling.

6. Diner (Barry Levinson, 1982)

“Diner” is Barry Levinson’s debut film and the first of four that take place in Baltimore – his hometown. The plot follows and group of friends in their early 20’s who reunite in their home city of Baltimore for a wedding. Back in Baltimore they spend a lot time in their favorite diner where they just hangout talking about sports, music and girls.

Each of them is involved in a relationship but not sure where to take it. Their friend’s wedding gets them thinking about becoming serious with their life and give in to commitment. But in reality these men are actually just grown up boys. They want to go out every night and have a good time.

For them it’s important to know the scores in NFL and to know the songs on the flip side of a record. For their girlfriends these things are not important thus the result being a clash between sexes. But in the end – after all the fights, the disappointments and the fears of growing old and becoming responsible – all that matters is their friendship.

7. The Big Chill (Lawrence Kasdan, 1983)

Featuring the most prominent actors of the 80’s (Kevin Kline, William Hurt, Glenn Close, Tom Berenger, Mary Kay Place, Jeff Goldblum, Meg Tily and JoBeth Willliams), “The Big Chill” tells the story of seven former college friends who reunited for one of their friend’s funeral. After the funeral the friends plan a weekend college reunion at a Carolina winter house.

The film is soft spoken and melodramatic as it examines the fragile strings that hold friendships together. Not only does it feature a great cast (Kevin Costner was also cast as the friend whose funeral they all attend but his scenes were deleted) but it also has one of the coolest soundtracks ever compiled for a film: Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Rolling Stones, Three Dog Night, Marvin Gaye and many more. The weekend spent together reminds every one of the good times, now long gone, but also of the importance of friends.

8. Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone, 1984)

The inventor of the “once upon a time” term in film titles gives us one last more with this one. Sadly “Once Upon a Time in America” was Sergio Leone’s last film. But what a film! Running over three hours long the film tells the story of two kids from the Lower East Side of Manhattan who struggle to escape poverty and do something with their lives.

After Noodles (Robert De Niro) meets Max (James Woods) things would never be the same again for the two hustlers. They leave the small time thefts behind and get involved in the bootlegging industry during the prohibition. Money and fame tears the two apart and their relationship starts to decline.

Fate chooses different lives for the two who drift apart from each other. But in spite of all this the audience can plainly see the regret on their faces what they reminisce the times they had and the friendship they shared.

Some of the Best Hindi(Bollywood) films like Sholay, Dosti, should have been mentioned.

' src=

Hindi films are all trash. I know because I’ve grown up watching them.

I agree with you on that.. recent movies are all complete trash waste time, money and energy… no idea why do they even make…?

' src=

Lost in Translation

' src=

Definitely!

' src=

Steel Magnolias (1989), The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (2005), Frances Ha (2012), The Help (2011), Friends with Money (2006), 9 to 5 (1980), The Color Purple (1980), Bring it On (2000) and the list goes on for female friendships too but utterly lack of in here…

' src=

Also, Beaches.

' src=

Yes, we need more films about women being friends , and it would be nice if there was one mentioned in the twenty-five (25) listed Best Friends Films. Thank YOU for mentioning this critical need in our society as I have felt so alone in doing so because for a long time, I was the only one !

Thank YOU for mentioning all the films that I couldn’t think of this morning , but , hopefully, I mentioned some that you don’t have !!

' src=

I don’t usually repeat myself but: women are not capable of friendship. At most they are capable of breaking man’s friendships. Movies with such subject are pure fiction.

Wait, what.

Yes, I agree completely that these films are archaic as they have no women friendships So Typical Of Hollywood ! When will it change?? When more women are involved and are part of the film making process !!! ???

Lethal Weapon 😉

' src=

Shitty list.. Where the hell is The Lord of The Rings which could easily top this list..

' src=

Interesting choice. But indeed. It’s also about friendship. No war without them broken or made. A huge theme in this story when you think of it.

I had made a comment , but it wasn’t posted here as I thought THAT it would be. I had said that this list of twenty-five (25)films does Not have any made for women being friends !!

Some films ABOUT women being good friends are FRIED GREEN TOMATOES , GONE WITH THE WIND, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES , THE HAUNTING,

' src=

Thelma and Louise and 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days are exclusively about female friendship.

Women are not capable of friendship. At most they are capable of breaking man’s friendships. Movies with such subject are pure fiction.

' src=

What about Beaches?…I see someone else has mentioned it.

' src=

Agree with Fried Green Tomatoes, but can’t see the relevance of The Haunting though, unless you see it as most movies could be seen as having some sort of friendship in them. But far too many movies with female friends omitted from this list to make it relevant I think.

' src=

how can you not have Withnail and I in hat list ? :O

' src=

Todo Sobre Mi Madre, with a man that could have broken women’s friendships.

I’m sure no one wants to hear this, but what about Forest Gump?

I very highly recommend The Selfish Giant (2013). Other famous movies are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Treasure of Sierra Madre (1948), The Sixth Sense (1999), Goodfellas (1990), Hugo (2011). Friendship too, like all other relationships, can go sour, and this theme also needs to be addressed in movies. Friendship can be between any two persons regardless of age or gender, e.g.. between man and child(The Sixth Sense) , boy and girl (My Girl), brothers(Raging Bull), sisters(Marvin’s Room), etc. This list, considering the immensity of the task of representing all of these facets of friendship in movies, showing range and depth, is incomplete to say the least.

Thank you for your very insightful and true comment on friendship. I only wish that Hollywood realized it !!

Scarecrow (1973), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and many many more 🙂

Good to see Beautiful Girls getting some attention. An enjoyable and frequently overlooked movie.

Caramel (2007, Lebanese film), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Bottle Rocket, The Big Lebowski, The Motorcycle Diaries

dead poets society

Not all of the Romanian movies from the nineties have dealt with communism. O vară de neuitat( Un été inoubliable/ An unforgettable summer) is a great movie from 1994 that Kristin Scott Thomas regards as the favorite movie of her career. The movie is available on Youtube with English subtitles:

Madagascar…1,2 or 3

' src=

My Own Private Idaho

' src=

When I saw the title I already remembered “Le déclin de l’empire américai” and is sequel ” Les invasions barbares” de Denys Arcand

' src=

Great list. Great that you mentioned Gran Torino! Although its not exclusively about friendship, I really love the friendship in Lethal Weapon a lot 🙂

“Yo, Tambien”, The Station Agent, Lost in Translation, 25th hour This last one because its partly about old friends who have lost each other and find each other back when one has to make choice, which makes that his friends have to do also.

' src=

Female friendship flicks….just to name a few off the top of my head, Brokedown Palace, Girl, Interrupted, Foxfire, The Truth About Cats & Dogs….great flicks, great cast, great soundtracks.

' src=

Bro, this list is missing Hot Fuzz! 😀

' src=

What about Birdy?

' src=

You missed this gem: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0177507/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 – when it comes to friendship, this has to be on the list.

' src=

Ghost World and My Own Private Idaho are my favorite films about friendship.

' src=

How about Crime Spree…..a little jem of a French movie

' src=

Good list but a little surprised to see Dersu Uzala or Papillion not make the list.

Hit the trail with some of cinema’s most magical destination films

There’s loads to be said for the transportive power of cinema – that magical ability to whisk us off to places we’d never otherwise go – but we’re often glad of its power to bring us back again. It’s fun to pay a visit to Mos Eisley or Twin Peaks but you probably wouldn’t want to linger too long. Occasionally, though, a movie will leave you with itchy feet and an urge to hit the trail (or at least, low-cost airline website) for real. Here are 40 films that’ll have you reaching for your passport.

An email you’ll actually love

Sideways (2004)

Sideways (2004)

Destination: Santa Ynez Valley, California, USA

They may be insufferable wine bores cursed in perpetuity by merlot producers the world over, but it’s hard not to kinda love pent-up Miles (Paul Giamatti) and laconic Jack (Thomas Haden Church) in Alexander Payne’s Oscar-winning comedy-drama. For one thing, the hapless roadtrippers are never dull; for another, they introduced the moviegoing world to California’s lush Santa Ynez Valley and its array of sun-kissed valleys, bountiful vineyards and roadside staging posts. If you’re ever following in their footsteps, be sure to stop in at Miles’s favourite restaurant, The Hitching Post II . PDS

Into the Wild (2007)

Into the Wild (2007)

  • Action and adventure

Destination :  Denali National Park, Alaska, USA

Things go south when Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) heads north in Sean Penn’s moving biopic of the young hiker’s journey from comfortable middle-class life to the vast Alaskan wilderness. This true-life adventure may have a heartbreaking ending but the journey there is pretty special, backdropped by unforgettable American landscapes and life-changing encounters in the spirit of all great road-trip movies. The vast solitude of Alaska’s Denali National Park, five hours’ drive from Anchorage and overshadowed by North America’s highest peak, Mount Denali (aka Mount McKinley), leaves a haunting impression. PDS

Wild (2014)

Wild (2014)

Destination: The Pacific Crest Trail, USA

There was a reason thousands of solo hikers set off on the Pacific Crest Trail IRL after seeing this movie. Based on Cheryl Strayed’s bestselling memoir of the same name and starring Reese Witherspoon, ‘Wild’ paints a vivid picture of life off-grid and on-foot on the PCT, an equal parts gruelling and stunning hiking route which weaves through the Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges on America’s west coast. The urge to pack up your water purifier and your emotional baggage and hit the trail as the credits roll is hard to ignore. EWA

The Sheltering Sky (1990)

The Sheltering Sky (1990)

Destination: Aït Benhaddou, Morocco

Paul Bowles’s bohemian account of post-war life in north Africa is hardly the greatest advertisement for tourism – the jaded American couple at its heart aren’t the most open-minded pair – but Bernardo Bertolucci’s visually rich adaptation makes it all seem well worth the trip anyway. It has Debra Winger and John Malkovich as the pair of slightly insufferable roamers (‘We’re travellers,’ they’re at pains to point out, ‘not tourists’) but the real stars of the show are the Saharan landscapes, Tangier souks and dusty villages. One of those villages, the ancient fort of Aït Benhaddou, is a film star in its own right, having appeared in ‘Gladiator’, ‘Babel’, ‘Kundun’ and ‘The Mummy’, among others. PDS

Lost in Translation (2003)

Lost in Translation (2003)

Destination: Tokyo, Japan Sofia Coppola’s classic is one of the quintessential travel movies, not just for its Japanese locations, both postcard-famous and off-the-beaten-track, but in perfectly capturing that unmistakable sense of dislocation that can come with hitting the trail. Here, it’s magnified by deeper life crises for Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray’s two lonely travellers, but their existential woes spark a powerful connection – and we’ve all been there. As far as the travelling goes, they’re doing it the luxe way, staying in the now-very-famous and expensive Park Hyatt Tokyo and taking day trips to Kyoto soundtracked by Air. Other hotels (and Spotify) are available. PDS

A United Kingdom (2016)

A United Kingdom (2016)

Destination: Serowe, Botswana

This true-life love story between Bechuanaland royal heir Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo) and Londoner Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) plays like a cross between a Disney fairy tale and a bracing slug of social realism. The couple are subjected to prejudice and disapproval in all its guises – straight-up racism in post-war Britain and prescriptive protocols in Africa – but coolly face it down to make history. The story is inspiring and the backdrops scarcely less so. Director Amma Asante filmed on location in Seretse’s home village of Serowe, so head there for a two-in-one cinematic and historical pilgrimage (and check out the rhinos while you’re there). PDS

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

Destination: Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia

This comedy-drama is at once an Aussie classic, a road trip gem and a glorious celebration of difference – all crammed on to a bus called Priscilla and driven across Australia’s Outback to a gig in Alice Springs. The movie’s spiritual home – as its website proudly points out – is The Palace Hotel in hardscrabble Broken Hill, where a night in the tacky-flamboyant Priscilla Suite will set you back around A$200. It’s here that Bernadette Bassenger (Terence Stamp), Mitzi Del Bra (Hugo Weaving) and Felicia Jollygoodfellow (Guy Pearce) stay over en route to the Northern Territory. Or if you want to keep things strictly underground, head for the subterranean White Cliffs motel in the bizarre town of Coober Pedy– another port of call for the trio. PDS

A Room with a View (1985)

A Room with a View (1985)

Destination: Florence, Italy

What’s most charming about this 1980s Merchant Ivory classic, which follows the  first visit to Italy of the young Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter)? It’s a tough call between the sun-soaked streets of Florence and all those becoming Edwardian ruffles. Though it does a very good job of capturing England’s bucolic countryside too, it’s the first half of the film, full of glorious views of the languid Arno river, the city’s terracotta rooftops and ochre-coloured landmarks that lingers in the memory. EWA

A Walk in the Woods (2015)

A Walk in the Woods (2015)

Destination: The Appalachian Trail, USA

According to the Bill Bryson memoir from which this warm-hearted outdoorsy adventure is adapted, 2,000 people attempt the 2,200-mile-long Appalachian Trail every year, but only 10 percent make it. Attempting to beat the stats are Robert Redford and Nick Nolte’s old-timers. The trail – the longest hiking-only path in the world – runs from Maine to Georgia, with glorious, Ansel Adams-esque scenery and killer hills all the way. Will our grizzled heroes make it? Do bears shit in the woods? Finally, a movie that can answer both questions. PDS

Monos (2019)

Monos (2019)

Destination: Chingaza National Natural Park, Colombia

The brilliant ‘Monos’ sometimes feels like a war film, sometimes like a sci-fi and sometimes like some new genre we’ve never encountered before. Its high-altitude locations are guaranteed to have intrepid types reaching for their passports. Rising to more than four kilometres above sea level, Colombia’s Chingaza National Natural Park, where it is filmed, feels like the roof of the world and director Alejandro Landes gives its cloud forests, waterfalls and rocky outcrops the full widescreen treatment. Within range of Bogotá, it’s catapulted straight on to our bucket list. PDS

Journey to Italy (1954)

Journey to Italy (1954)

Destination: Naples, Italy

This influential Roberto Rossellini film follows discontented marrieds Katherine (Ingrid Bergman) and Alex Joyce (George Sanders) as they drive to Naples and bicker their way towards something that looks likely to involve eye-watering legal costs and a painful conversation about who gets to keep the Frank Sinatra LPs. Watching these sophisticated travellers slugging it out can be an emotionally arduous ride, but they find calm and beauty amid the city’s archaeological treasures. For her, it’s the volcanic Phlegraean Fields and the ancient artefacts of the Naples Museum; for him, a ferry ride to Capri. For us? A trip to the EasyJet website.  PDS

The Way (2010)

The Way (2010)

Destination: El Camino de Santiago, Spain

Whether it’s to the football, the pub or just to Homebase for something to de-grease the barbecue, a father-and-son pilgrimage is a special thing. It’s arguably even more special when there’s an actual pilgrimage involved, as is the case in this touching 2010 drama directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his dad, Martin Sheen. The movie follows the path of Galicia’s Camino de Santiago, a UNESCO listed network of hiking trails that leads pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. With its stunning landscapes and moments of footsore camaraderie, it’ll have you itching to follow in its footsteps. PDS

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Destination: Oahu, Hawaii, USA Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy tracks down girl in far-flung corner of Hawaii. Boy discovers girl is now having mindblowing sex with a rockstar (Russell Brand). Major bummer. Still, on the upside for Jason Segel’s lovelorn musician – and everyone else in the film – this lol-some romantic-comedy unfolds on Oahu’s stunning north shore. Specifically, the Turtle Bay Resort , a honeymooners’ paradise that comes equal first with Bora Bora from ‘Couple’s Retreat’ in a list of dream destinations Kristen Bell has managed to visit for work . PDS

Midnight in Paris (2011)

Midnight in Paris (2011)

Destination: Paris, France

Americans swooning over the City of Light is nothing new. But rarely are their chansons d’amour so persuasive as Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight in Paris’. Gil (Owen Wilson) is a jobbing Hollywood screenwriter on vacation in gay Paree with fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) and her parents. Each night he wanders off alone, and on midnight’s chime, is transported into a magical-realist time warp: first the 1920s (hello, Ernest, Zelda and Scott), then the Belle Époque of Degas, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec. From Rodin’s hôtel particulier to abandoned fairground the Musée des Arts Forains , Gil is swept up by the city’s charms, and as he falls deeper in love, so do we. HO

The Passenger (1975)

The Passenger (1975)

Destination: Vera, Spain

From the nocturnal streets of Milan to the Aeolian Islands and even south-east  London, Michaelangelo Antonioni’s locations often got as much screen time as his actors. Even larger-than-life Jack Nicholson feels swallowed up by the epic sweep of southern Spain, the last stop for his journalist-gone-rogue David Locke after an almost 007-worthy itinerary (Algeria, London, Munich, Barcelona). The dusty Andalusian hilltop town of Vera, with its dilapidated bullring and now-demolished Hotel de la Gloria, is the filming location for the famous six-minute tracking shot in which Locke’s fate is sealed – in typically cryptic Antonioni style, naturalmente . JM

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Destination:  Seyðisfjörður,  Iceland Timid Life magazine staffer Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) heads off to track down grizzled photojournalist Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn) and finds himself along the way. It’s basically a mega-budget version of that gap year your mate Charlie still goes on about. But if Walter’s fantastical daydreams of superpowered adventure and heart-stopping romance are eclipsed by the rugged Icelandic landscapes, what landscapes to be eclipsed by. If you want to recreate his high-speed longboard ride , just head for Seyðisfjörður on the eastern edge of Iceland. Just be sure to check the terms of your travel insurance first. PDS

Leap Year (2010)

Leap Year (2010)

Destination: Aran Islands, Ireland It may not be a great advertisement for filmmaking but this romcom is an excellent billboard for the Irish counties of Wicklow, Mayo and Galway. Matthew Goode plays Irish innkeeper Declan O’Callaghan and Amy Adams is Anna Brady, the American visitor looking to exploit an arcane tradition whereby a man proposed to on a Leap Day must accept (because no marriage is more likely to last than one you’ve been forced into by an ancient form of blackmail). Forget the plot contortions and focus instead on the glorious Irish vistas, especially those of the rocky Aran Islands where much of the movie was filmed. PDS

L'Avventura (1960)

L'Avventura (1960)

Destination: Aeolian Islands, Italy In Michelangelo Antonioni’s languid classic, a young woman (Lea Massari) vanishes during a yachting trip to the rocky, mysterious Aeolian Islands and her boyfriend Sandro (Gabriele Ferzetti) and BFF Claudia (Monica Vitti) make a slightly half-hearted attempt to find her (think Tommy Lee Jones in ‘The Fugitive’, only on Xanax). The disappearance itself takes place on the tiny volcanic outcrop of Lisca Bianca, which can be visited only by private boat, but Sandro and Claudia’s ensuing wanderings will have you adding Sicily to your holiday wishlist too. Even in black and white, the Tyrrhenian Sea sparkles enticingly. PDS

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Destination: Skopelos, Greece Abba-inspired ‘Mamma Mia!’ is movie Marmite, but it’s impossible to watch the film, or it’s more recent sequel ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’, and not be left pining for Greece’s many paradise-like islands. And if you’re into tales of friendship, motherhood, a secret search to find a father figure and a dungare ed Meryl Streep singing ’70s hits, they are pure joy. Oh, to be skipping through a Greek orange grove, falling in love in an intimate taverna or diving off a boat into the clear waters that surround sunny Skopelos right now…  EWA

Tracks (2013)

Tracks (2013)

Destination: Western Australia

Australia’s dusty town of Alice Springs is the jump-off point for an outback adventure that’s based on a true story. Mia Wasikowska plays Robyn Davidson who, in 1977, trekked 1,700 miles across the continent with only her dog, Diggity, and four dromedaries for company. At least, until National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan (Adam Driver) pitches up to cover her incredible undertaking. It’s a pure travel movie: a celebration of the dangers and majesty of the great outdoors that captures the spirituality of Aboriginal lands, the vastness of ever-shifting deserts and the spellbinding starscapes of the Australian night sky. PDS

The Two Faces of January (2014)

The Two Faces of January (2014)

Destination: Crete, Greece Like ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’, this underrated thriller has everything you could possibly want from a Patricia Highsmith adaptation: gorgeous costumes, slippery characters and exotic European settings. Oh, and foul deeds – let’s not forget about them. Here the double-dealing and betrayals take place in Greece rather than Italy, but the soft Mediterranean light and shimmering seaside backdrops are equally to die for as Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac’s vying tricksters, and Kirsten Dunst’s beautiful sorta-moll, journey from the tourist traps of Athens to Crete’s sun-baked hills and its Minoan ruins. PDS

Jeremiah Johnson (1972)

Jeremiah Johnson (1972)

Destination: Zion National Park, Utah, USA In movie terms, Utah is most famous as home to Monument Valley, a landmark in all those great John Ford westerns. Head a few hours west, though, and you’ll find the even more remote dream destination for the hardcore western lover-cum-outdoors type: Utah’s mountainous Zion National Park, where Robert Redford western and handy gif generator ‘Jeremiah Johnson’ was partly filmed. The real-life Johnson was the nineteenth century’s answer to Bear Grylls and probably smelled badly of bison liver and fetid beard, but needless to say, Redford makes him a total thirst trap(per). PDS

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Destination :  Ventura, California, USA It may not be Big Sur or Malibu but Ventura is famous for a few things: its sandy beaches, long pier, surfing and – surely the topper – hosting the climactic moments of ‘Little Miss Sunshine’. It’s in this sun-kissed corner of California that the dysfunctional Hoover clan pull up in their yellow VW microbus and unleash comedy mayhem. In the film, the setting is actually Redondo Beach, 70-odd miles south, but Ventura was the real-life stand-in for the pier scene . If you really want to get close to the action, check in to the Crowne Plaza Hotel Ventura Beach where Olive Hoover (Abigail Breslin) unleashes her superbly inappropriate ‘Super Freak’ on that unsuspecting beauty pageant. PDS

The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

Destination: Machu Picchu, Peru Before becoming a doctor, rebranding as ‘Che’ and becoming the last word in revolutionary chic, Ernesto Guevara (Gael García Bernal) embarked on a roadtrip across South America with his old friend Alberto Granado that is faithfully recorded in Walter Salles’s excellent 2004 biopic. The pair visit the spectacular Incan citadel of Machu Picchu without once referring to ‘Lonely Planet’ and set about exchanging revolutionary ideas and posing for snapshots. If they’d had Instagram back in 1952, @Che would have been lapping up the likes. PDS

Local Hero (1983)

Local Hero (1983)

Destination: Pennan, Scotland

Home, as they say, is where the heart is, and in this enduring delight that means Scotland’s unspoiled east coast, with its tiny fishing villages, crystal-clear skies and mystical vibes. It’s here – the fictional seaside village of Ferness, specifically – that oil company exec (Peter Riegert) is sent with a brief to buy the place so it can be turned into a refinery. Unexpectedly, the villagers like the idea because, well, fishing is hard work. It’s a lovely comic twist that throws the whole film winningly off its axis. Any ‘Local Hero’ pilgrims should head for the village of Pennan in Aberdeenshire, Ferness’s real-life stand-in, and grab a selfie by that famous phonebox. PDS

Patagonia (2010)

Patagonia (2010)

Destination: Trelew, Patagonia, Argentina This gentle travelogue has Welsh photographer Rhys and his partner Gwen discovering the charms of Patagonia, where their guide (Matthew Rhys) introduces them to the region’s Welsh heritage and the chapels built by Welsh settlers. If you’re intrepid – or Welsh and fancy undertaking a similar pilgrimage – head for the Welsh town of Trelew in Argentina and saddle up for a horse ride into the dusty desert. Bizarrely, it’s exactly what Rhys was doing when he bumped into ‘Patagonia’ director Marc Evans location-scouting the film. PDS

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter… and Spring (2003)

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter… and Spring (2003)

Destination: Juwangsan National Park , South Korea This lushly located Korean masterpiece exudes seriously serene vibes as it charts a young Buddhist monk’s rocky spiritual journey under the tutelage of his master across 40 or so years. Since the film came out in 2003, its location – a purpose-built floating monastery on Jusanji Lake in Juwangsan National Park – has gone from hidden secret to national treasure, with visitors making the trek to sit in the shade of its willow trees and get zen by its tranquil waters. It’s a tricky trek to get there, though: Juwangsan is one of Korea’s most inaccessible national parks and the hike to the lake is a real glute-burner. PDS

Roman Holiday (1953)

Roman Holiday (1953)

Destination: Rome, Italy Sly but chivalrous American journo Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck) shows Audrey Hepburn’s royal fugitive, Princess Ann, around the Eternal City in a classic romance that’s fizzier than a flute of prosecco. He takes her on a whirlwind Vespa tour of Rome’s famous tourist attractions – Joe isn’t one for the hipster haunts – taking in the Spanish Steps, the Mouth of Truth and the Colosseum. Other films have majored on the city’s jaded hedonism (‘La Dolce Vita’, ‘The Great Beauty’) and social ills (‘Bicycle Thieves’); this one just makes Rome feel like a dream. PDS

Seven Years in Tibet (1997)

Seven Years in Tibet (1997)

Destination: Lhasa, Tibet

A Sun-In blond Brad Pitt plays Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountaineer who sets out to climb the Himalayan peak of Nanga Parbat in 1939 only to end up in a POW camp. He escapes, crosses the border into Tibet and becomes tutor to the Dalai Lama in Lhasa – then the Chinese plan an invasion and things get complicated. The film faced a couple of problems: Harrer turned out to be a Nazi IRL and Tibet itself was off-limits to the production. Scorsese had the same issue on ‘Kundun’ and recreated it in Morocco; here, it is Argentina and the Canadian Rockies. But director Jean-Jacques Annaud’s time in Tibet recce-ing the country pays off and he does a fine job capturing its rugged beauty on screen. PDS

The Piano (1993)

The Piano (1993)

Destination: Karekare Beach, New Zealand If you’re looking for a beach holiday with a movie pilgrimage thrown in, head for New Zealand’s west coast where Jane Campion’s period drama is set. The gripping emotional journeys of Holly Hunter’s mute immigrant and her young daughter (Anna Paquin) as they deal with the harshness of nineteenth-century life steered the film to eight Oscar nominations. It was all filmed on the black sands of Karekare Beach, only 30 minutes’ drive from Auckland but stretched out at the foot of rugged cliffs in splendid isolation. If there was an Oscar for beaches, it’d be a shoo-in. PDS

Australia (2008)

Australia (2008)

Destination: East Kimberley, Western Australia

With its glorious shots of the outback and Hugh Jackman taking his kit off, Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Australia’ celebrates the continent’s rugged natural phenomena in all its forms. Sure, the film – an homage to the old westerns of John Ford – is a mite corny, but it showcases the scenery of Western Australia so beautifully, you’d think the tourist board funded it. And sure enough, they did: to the tune of $1 million. Luhrmann also filmed in Sydney and Queensland, but if you want the proper ‘Australia’ experience, head for Kununurra and from there the Kimberley, approximately a bazillion square miles of canyons, cattle stations and beaches. Saddle up. PDS

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)

Destination: Barcelona, Spain

Set in a world full of beautiful people doing impossibly bohemian things at extreme short notice, ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ is the life we’d all lead if we weren’t at home worrying about loo roll. It’s a seductive love letter to Catalonia and, in particular, a billboard for the beauties of Barcelona: as the title implies, the city itself shares top billing with Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), two friends who fall under the spell of Javier Bardem’s artist while visiting. Needless to say, the movie is full of Barca landmarks, including Park Güell, the Miró Museum, Parc de la Ciutadella and the Sagrada Família, and they all look utterly dreamy. PDS

The World's Fastest Indian (2005)

The World's Fastest Indian (2005)

Destination: Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA

This feelgood yarn has rough-around-the-edges Kiwi biker Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins) travelling from New Zealand to Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, aiming to beat the land speed record (just north of 200mph) on his trusty 1920 Indian Scout motorbike. A true story, it was filmed on location on an expansive salt pan in northwestern Utah that attracts petrolhead pilgrims to the annual Bonneville Speedway every summer. It also pops up in ‘Mad Men’, when a sweat-mottled Don Draper manages to blag a drive in a 1970 Chevelle SS, and ‘Independence Day’ . It’s another reason why anyone embarking on a movie-themed road trip should head straight for Utah. PDS

The Lost City Of Z (2016)

The Lost City Of Z (2016)

Destination: Tayrona National Park, Colombia Colombia has been South America’s go-to country for big-screen adventure since the days of ‘ Romancing the Stone’ and ‘The Mission’ in the ’80s. It offers a suitably mysterious landscape in James Grey’s dazzling epic about a British explorer (Charlie Hunnam) trying to find an undiscovered civilisation in the early twentieth century. Robert Pattinson joins him as a fellow military man with Ray Mears-like knowledge of the Amazon jungle. Grey and his crew used the Colombian Caribbean town of Santa Marta as a base, but you’ll need to head into the Tayrona National Park – the film’s Amazon scenes were filmed on the nearby Don Diego River – to follow in R-Patz’s and co’s boot prints. PDS

Skyfall (2012)

Skyfall (2012)

Destination: Istanbul, Turkey There’s not many desirable locations that 007 hasn’t passed through over his 25 film outings. The Caribbean has been a popular pitstop, right from his first film outing in ‘Dr No’, while he’s ticked off more European capitals than a 19-year-old Interrailer. One of them, Istanbul, has hosted the big man three times and just about emerged unscathed. In ‘Skyfall’, Daniel Craig’s Bond takes us on a high-speed tour of the city’s vast and labyrinthine Grand Bazaar in pursuit of a mercenary with a vital hard drive. One day, he’ll go back and just have a nice browse instead. PDS

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)

Destination: Lech, Austria Beyond James Bond, ski resorts are a rare sight in movies. After all, there’s only so much drama to be juiced from fondue evenings and teenagers necking pints, right? Wrong! Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger), who could ring drama from an empty packet of ready salted, delivers her own inimitable brand when Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) whisks her off to the Austrian Alps, hurricaning down the slopes and into a pharmacy to request a pregnancy test in strangled German, worried that she is ‘mitt baby’. Hosting the mayhem is Lech, a resort that promises ‘200km of high alpine powder’ and at least one skiable chemist. PDS

Unrelated (2007)

Unrelated (2007)

Destination: Tuscany, Italy  A spiritual cousin to ‘The Green Ray’, another movie that sets a woman’s personal crisis against a woozy summer holiday backdrop, Joanna Hogg’s debut film has fortysomething Anna (Kathryn Worth) joining some friends at their villa in Tuscany where she finds herself gravitating towards their young public school-y offspring – led by Tom Hiddleston in his first film role. It’s all surprisingly edgy stuff and culminates in a barney for the ages but the setting is to die for: the holidaying families staying in villa on the San Fabiano Estate just outside Siena, a world of rolling hills and olive groves. It’s a real B&B so you can check in any time; you just might not want to leave. PDS

Out of Africa (1985)

Out of Africa (1985)

Destination:   Chyulu Hills, Kenya

Your grandma’s favourite film has Danish farmer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) and Tiger Moth-flying big-game hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford) falling in love on the Kenyan savannah, despite the presence of hungry lions and (irksomely) an actual Mr Blixen (the astonishing  Klaus Maria Brandauer). It all goes on for ages which allows for plenty of time to take in the sweeping African landscapes, replete with watering holes, green hills and the vast, sunbaked expanse of the Great Rift Valley. If you’re looking for the ‘Out of Africa’ experience, head for Kenya’s Chyulu Hills where the film was shot. PDS

The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003)

The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003)

Destination: New Zealand

The action is plentiful in the big-screen adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s magical ’Lord of the Rings’ epic, but the setting is jaw-dropping enough to still be a distraction. While Frodo and his fellowship battle their way across Middle-earth to return the One Ring to Mordor, the only place where it can be destroyed, New Zealand’s sweeping plains, lush forests and snowcapped mountains are in the background like an 11-hour advert for Tourism New Zealand. A one-way ticket to Rivendell via Auckland International, please. EWA

The Green Ray (1986)

The Green Ray (1986)

Destination: St Jean-de-Luz, France

Sometimes a holiday isn’t enough. Secretary Delphine (played by director Éric Rohmer’s muse Marie Rivière) finds herself dumped and facing the prospect of being stuck in sweltering Paris for the summer ( quelle horreur! ). But trips to Cherbourg, the Alps and Biarritz only serve to make her feel more alienated – from smug couples, flirtatious singles, clueless tourists and the whole seething mass of humanity. Then, she finds a transcendent sunset in the Basque beach town of St Jean-de-Luz. Rohmer’s classic is not only a funny, magical exploration of human connection but a snapshot of a French summer – complete with dodgy holiday fashion. JM

Breath-taking landscapes. Fun-filled adventures. Memorable dialogues.

Who doesn’t want to go on a trip with their friends? Yet, after multiple cancellations and busy time schedules, you can only hope to spot the canvas of Spain and the hustling life of Paris through the television. Movies become your sole escape to travel the world.

However, rather than just providing a quick escape, maybe this time, those movies can serve as a dose of inspiration to bring some life into your travel plans.

Sick of making travel plans with friends that never work out?

Here’s a list of movies you can watch to escalate the process.

10 Best Movies that will inspire you to travel with your friends

  • The Motorcycle Diaries
  • Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
  • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
  • Dil Chahta Hai
  • The Hangover
  • Into The Wild
  • Eat, Pray, Love
  • The Bucket List
  • Sex And The City 2

1. The Motorcycle Diaries

“What do we leave behind when we cross each frontier? Each moment seems split in two; melancholy for what was left behind and the excitement of entering a new land.” ~The Motorcycle Diaries

This movie is about finding your calling in life through the means of travelling and exploring. It follows the journey of Che Guevara from a medical student to a revolutionary (figuratively) and through the land of South America (quite literally). It covers the personal journey of Che Guevara as well, as he meets various characters from different social statuses in his continental trek, and through his encounters, learns to view the world in a different way.

This movie will make you want to hop on your motorcycle that very moment, and hit the road to have your own personal journey.

2. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

“Sieze the day my friend, pehle is din ko poori tarah jiyo, phir chalis ke bare mein soochna.” ~ Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Undoubtedly, ZNMD is one movie that once single-handedly carried the title of #travelgoals. Everything it teaches us, from living life to the fullest to challenging our fears, from learning to prioritise relationships to cutting ourselves some slack- ZNMD is the perfect source to install a travel bug in you.

Set in the beautiful background of Spain, the scenes in the movie are a treat to the eyes and let’s be honest here, wouldn’t we be lying if we said that under-water diving and sky diving didn’t enter our to-do lists after watching ZNMD?

Like the movie’s name suggests, we only have one life, and ZNMD is a gentle reminder of the same.

“Jo Choti Si Har Ek Nahar, Sagar Ban Bhi Jaaye, Koi Tinka Leke Haath Mein, Dhoond Hi Lenge Hum, Kinare.” ~ Queen

‘Queen’ does justice to the statement ‘You don’t need a plan to travel.’ For every curious explorer who could never go to their favourite destination because the plan never worked out- constrained time schedule, not enough funding, friends cancelling plans- Queen is just the right inspiration for them.

Set in the beautiful backdrops of Paris and Amsterdam, ‘Rani’ from Queen teaches us, all you need for a memorable vacation is a passport, a ticket and some of that enthusiasm. The movie brings into view a very realistic picture of solo-travelling and inspires us to go on a life-changing journey as well.

 4. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

“Main udna chahte hu, daurna chahta hu, girna bhi chahta hu, bas rukna nahi chahta.” ~ Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani

If there’s one thing that YJHD taught us, it’s that, ‘Travelling makes you fall in love. With yourself and with life.”

You don’t need to travel to fancy foreign countries or get your passport stamped multiple times, to get a true travelling experience. Sometimes, a trip with friends to the mountains is enough to make you rethink your position in life.

With the first half of the film having been shot in Gulmarg and the second in Udaipur, the movie will surely make you want to pack your bags this very second, call your friends and board a train to the mountains.

5. Dil Chahta Hai

“Hum logo ko har saal, ek nae k baar, Goa zaroor aana chahiye.” ~ Dil Chahta Hai

How many times have you made a Goa plan with your friends that was never really executed?

Dil Chahta hai is the perfect movie to watch with your friends, to convert that plan to a spontaneous trip. It perfectly depicts the beauty of a road trip with friends, the bonds you create while on a trip and the memories you cherish forever.

6. The Hangover

the hangover

“Remember, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” ~ The Hangover

Watching Hangover is like a reminder about how a trip with your best friends can be the craziest experience you can ever have, Set in Las Vegas, this movie is about three friends and their adventures in a bachelor party in the city.

7. Into The Wild

“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure.” ~ Into the Wild

As the name suggests, this movie is about lending yourself to the wilderness and surviving with the bare necessities in life. Based on the story of a top student, who gave us his materialistic processions after graduation to go and live in Alaska, ‘Into the Wild’ will leave you with lots of questions and a bold answer to all of them- travel and explore.

8. Eat, Pray, Love

“To travel is worth any cost or sacrifice.” ~ Eat, Pray, Love

The movie traces the story of Elizabeth Gilbert whose perfect world comes shattering down when she gets divorced. She then embarks on a journey across the world in an attempt to rediscover her true self.

The movie throws many realisations at you and teaches you that loving yourself is the stepping stone to finding love and travelling is a long, sweet romance you choose to have with yourself.

9. The Bucket List

“We live, we die, and the wheels on the bus go round and round.” ~The Bucket List

The movie follows the story of two terminally ill men left with only six months to live, who decide to explore life and make a bucket list comprising all the things they have never tried before.

With a comical tone to the movie, it offers a realisation to its viewers- life is too short to be overthinking about the things you want to do.

Filmed in various locations in India, China, Egypt, Tanzania, France and the U.S, this movie will undoubtedly make you want to hit the road, and cross out every thing on your bucket list.

10. Sex And The City 2

sex and the city 2

“ I have always been fascinated by the Middle East. You know, desert moons, magic carpets.” ~ Sex and the City 2

When Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte become tired of dealing with the pressures of life and desire a break, they join their friend, Samantha, in Abu Dhabi where her former partner is filming a movie.

The movie provides just the right dose of inspiration to convert that girl’s night out into a vacation with your girlfriends.

So, this time, to make your dream trip a reality, try giving one of these movies a shot and who knows, maybe you’ll become the next inspiration for a travel movie.

Hollywood legend returns to high school in iconic 80s film for 40th anniversary

Kevin Bacon at Footloose high school

Kevin Bacon went for a lovely trip down memory lane on Saturday as he revisited the high school where iconic 1980s movie Footloose was filmed.

The American actor, 65, starred as Ren McCormack in the 80s musical drama film – which was filmed at Payson High School and became one of the most successful films of 1984.

In the film, the face now best known for those EE adverts moves from the big city of Chicago to a small town in Utah where dancing and music are banned by a local Reverend.

Kevin revisited the high school over the weekend after a social media campaign inviting him back to Payson went viral – the brilliant hashtag was #BaconToPayson.

As part of the campaign, students from the school recreated legendary scenes from Footloose, which also starred John Lithgow, Lori Singer, and a young Sarah Jessica Parker.

Kevin Bacon speaking at Payson High School

Marking its 40th anniversary, Kevin spoke to the students, saying: ‘When I first heard about this Bacon to Payson thing, I was like, “Wow, this is crazy”. But you were all just tireless.’

He then praised the kids for ‘talking [him] into it’ and later remarked that he appreciated the effort put in to get him back to the central US state.

According to reports in CNN , Kevin added: ‘[Thank you for] turning what could be just a movie star coming back to get a pat on the back into something really positive.’

Kevin Bacon as Ken McCormack in Footloose

The Tremors actor was then presented with an honorary diploma from Payson High School, posed for selfies with dozens of students, and even made a visit to Ren’s locker from the film.

Footloose was nominated twice in the same year for the same Oscar award, for best original song, with both Kenny Loggins’ Footloose and Deniece Williams’ Let’s Hear It for the Boy both emerging as huge hits from the film.

Since its success in 1984, when it was the seventh highest-grossing film of the whole of that year in America, it has gone on to become an even bigger cult hit.

Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer in Footloose

Footloose is often credited with really kicking off Kevin’s career, too – he’d appeared in a handful of roles before 1984, including the 1980 slasher film Friday the 13th, but 1984 saw his big break.

From that point on he became one of the biggest stars in cinema, eventually winning acting awards in the 1990s and 2000s for his performances in such movies as Murder in the First and Hollow Man.

Most recently, he was spotted in the cast of 2023 Netflix mystery thriller Leave the World Behind , which also starred Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone unpack intense rivalry over body fat, machine guns and more

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone are still unsure who had the bigger career, comparing everything from body fat to machine guns and more.

“We ended up kind of like, ‘Well, you killed 28 people in the movie; I killed 32,’” Schwarzenegger, 76, tells host Harvey Levin in Page Six’s exclusive preview of “TMZ Presents: Arnold & Sly: Rivals, Friends, Icons.”

“I got to top that,” Stallone, 77, chimes in, describing his approach to navigating the pair’s longstanding rivalry.

Schwarzenegger goes on to say that he and his equally muscled counterpart were competitive beyond the amount of characters they killed in their stream of action ‘80s action-thrillers.

“It was now the body count and then it was kind of, like, ‘Well, what was your body fat? ‘I was down to seven percent,’ Sly said. And then I said, ‘I was down to 10 percent,’” the “Predator” star says of the “Rambo” icon.

“So it became a competition with the body.”

Aside from their physiques, the former governor of California admits that he was even jealous of the weapons Stallone used on camera — and soon demanded machine guns that were just as impressive.

“And then he started using machine guns that were kind of, like, huge machine guns. I was running after him, he was not running after me,” Schwarzenegger says. “So I said, when we did ‘Predator’ … ‘I’ve got to have a bugger machine gun than Sly used in “Rambo.” So this is how it went.”

The clip concludes with the “Terminator” actor emphasizing that body count was perhaps the most important component of winning the game of Hollywood against Stallone.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

“He killed 80 people,” Schwarzenegger quips, “so I had to kill 87 people.”

The duo’s dynamic eventually evolved into a strong, decades-long friendship, which is explored in Fox’s one-hour special.

“TMZ Presents: Arnold & Sly: Rivals, Friends, Icons” airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox and is available to stream the next day on Hulu.

Paramount and Hasbro’s animated Transformers One is pushing back its release in theaters by one week in order to take advantage of Imax screens and to provide some breathing room from the competition.

The film will now open Sept. 20, 2024, instead of Sept. 13. That gives it two weeks of distance from Sony’s Beetlejuice . Beetlejuice .

Johnny Depp visits Moscow for ‘Lone Ranger’ premiere

Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer presented the “Lone Ranger” in Moscow. Source: Sergey Kuksin / RG

The “Lone Ranger” film crew, including Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, visited Moscow during the recent Moscow International Film Festival .

Hollywood Walk of Fame superstar Johnny Depp is not new to Russia: He visited Moscow two years ago on his tour of the “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” together with his beautiful co-star, Penelope Cruz.

“Russia has a serious history. My favorite writers and poets are Russian. So there are some places in Russia I would like to have a look at; but I never have enough time, since I come here with a crew, and they are always dragging me around on some important business,” Depp said at a news conference.

The actor would like to visit sites associated with his favorite authors: Fyodor Dostoevsky and the poet of the Russian Revolution, Vladimir Mayakovsky .

On top of that, Grigori Rasputin , the controversial advisor to the Romanovs (the last royal family of Russia), is his favorite historical character.

Depp would gladly accept the role. “Rasputin is certainly a very unconventional character — a surprising, curious one. The incredible story of the man's life is so powerful!” Depp said.

“I'd also say Raskolnikov — although I do understand that I'm a little too old to play the main character in ‘Crime and Punishment.’”

Even so, the 50-year-old Depp, appearing in the “Lone Ranger” as the Native American Tonto, barely looks 30. “I worked out a lot, had to work with my personal instructor.

It was really important for me to portray American Indians in an accurate and appealing way, to show them for what they have always been — fighters,” said the actor.

For the film, Depp had to perform some stunts on horseback and climb up to the top of a train traveling at full speed, or climb down underneath it... It is no wonder the crew chose the Moscow Railway Museum as the venue for a photo call, against the backdrop of old trains and locomotives.

“I'd really love to travel across Russia by rail,” Depp said, adding jokingly: “Just not on the rooftop, as in the movie.”

At the museum, Depp posed for a photo call with his charming co-star Armie Hammer, who performed the part of John Reed. It turns out that the up-and-coming 26-year-old star has a close connection to Russia: His great-grandmother on his father's side was Russian actress Olga Vadina von Rut, a daughter of Imperial Army Gen. Vadim von Rut.

His great-grandfather, in turn, was a famous millionaire of Ukrainian origin, Armand Hammer, who was respected by all Soviet leaders, from Lenin to Gorbachev .

The two actors told RBTH that the “Lone Ranger” had left them with a positive impression.

“It was really fantastic that we were granted permission to visit America's most mysterious places, where no one had been allowed to come, let alone shoot, for years. Native Americans were invariably welcoming and supportive wherever we went,” Hammer said.

Hammer also mentioned a funny incident that occurred while filming the movie: He accidentally fell into a cactus coming out of a bathroom, and it took him a month to pull out all the cactus needles.

“Don't worry, though, he did not fall forwards, he fell backwards; so, in that sense, he was not injured,” Depp said jokingly.

Depp himself recollected that he had to let scorpions crawl across his face in one scene: “They don't scare me at all. I tried putting one in my mouth, but it did not like that, so I had to let go. Clowns and mimes are what really scare me.”

As they headed for the Rossiya Concert Hall for the “Lone Ranger” premiere, fans were chanting hysterically “Johnny Depp! Johnny Depp!” His bodyguard literally held the actor in his arms, for fear that Depp might be torn apart by the crowd. Some of the fans, however, managed to get his autograph.

After the premiere, Depp met with his new girlfriend, Amber Heard, for dinner at a top-notch Moscow restaurant. The couple first became romantically involved when they were shooting “The Rum Diary,” based on the novel by iconic author Hunter S. Thompson.
