Cruise Review - Carnival Liberty Christmas Cruise

Cool Cruiser

I have just returned from the December 24 Christmas/New Year’s sailing of Carnival Liberty. This was a family reunion cruise and I was accompanied by 15 members of my family ranging in age from 14 to 72. I am an experienced traveler and have sailed on 9 cruises prior to this one. This was my third cruise with Carnival. I have also sailed with RCCL, Princess and HAL. Unfortunately this trip with Carnival will be my last. Here’s why:

We arrived at the port at about 12:00 pm. The embarkation lines were pretty long, but they moved fast. Once we got to the check in counter, it took the agent over 30 minutes to check us in. Apparently, she did not know how to handle the sail and sign cards for my children because they were not in the same cabin as my husband and me. Finally, she got a more experienced agent to help her and we boarded the ship. I have never experienced problems at check in before and my children have always sailed in a separate cabin.

On the first night, I ordered two separate entrees. The head waitress looked at me as if I was crazy. She never smiled. If looks could kill, I would have been dead! My brother spoke to the waitress the next day and she mentioned that she was sad because she was so far away from home and missed her family during the Holiday season. My brother said some things to try to cheer her up and her demeanor improved slightly for the remainder of the cruise.

Dinner on the first night was dreadfully slow. In fact we were unable to enjoy coffee and desert because by the time they got around to serving it, it was time for them to ready the dining room for the second sitting.

Our dinning tables were in the very back of the ship. We had a lovely view. However, there was a constant vibration. At first I assumed that the vibration was somehow associated with rough seas, but the vibration was present for the duration of the cruise.

We had a balcony cabin. On two occasions our bathroom completely flooded because of drainage problems in the engine room. Additionally, many other cabins near ours flooded also. We also experienced problems with the toilet not flushing. I would press the button to flush and nothing would happen. I would then hear a gurgling sound and about 10 minutes later, the toilet would flush. I was very surprised that a brand new ship would already be experiencing vibrating, flooding and flushing problems.

The service on the lido deck was unsatisfactory. Dirty dishes were left on tables for hours before they were cleaned. Food and drink that fell on the floor were not immediately cleaned up. In fact, I witnessed a child fall and hurt herself when she stepped into a puddle of food and juice on the floor. Soon after an older lady also almost fell and hurt herself. It was disgusting, so I mentioned my dissatisfaction to a staff member as he walked by and he got the mess cleaned up.

As usual, the chair hogs were out in full force. Towels and tee shirt occupied deck chairs for hours. When I got tired of looking at the empty chairs, I tossed the towel out of one of chairs and sat my butt down in it. About an hour after I sat down, a woman came back, she looked at me like I was crazy and I just ignored her and kept my butt firmly planted in the seat.

My cousin went up to the SPA for what was advertised as a ninety-minute spa treatment. She said that it took 30 minutes to complete paperwork and answer questions. The actual treatment took only 30 minutes. At the end of the treatment she was handed a list containing over $600 of products that they wanted her to buy. When my cousin told the clinician that she was not interested in buying $600 of product, she was further harassed to purchase cheaper products. This was a complete turnoff, so my cousin cancelled the treatment that she had scheduled for the next sea day. I also cancelled my treatments because being harassed after a SPA treatment costing $150 and more is not my idea of relaxation.

The entertainment was lacking. Though the production shows were very good, all of the other entertainment could have been improved. The midnight comedian called a group of young ladies sitting in the audience “lesbians” not once, but on many occasions throughout his act. He also called another lady a “bitch”. He then zeroed in on some teenagers in the audience and proceeded to quiz them with sexually explicit questions. He was NOT funny, but people laughed at his “jokes” anyway.

The same singer sung in the promenade night after night. I would have enjoyed listening to different entertainers each night on the promenade. Though the singer was good, it became pretty mundane listening to the same guy night after night. I was also disappointed that they did not rotate the entertainment in the different venues. We enjoy jazz, however, the jazz band was only scheduled to play in the stinking cigar bar. No way was I going to sit down in a lounge filled with cigar and cigarette smoke to enjoy jazz music!

The disco catered to the late teen and 20 something crowd. If you like hip-hop and techno music, then this is the place for you because that’s all they played. In one instance the disco turned into a place for “girls gone wild”. At one point this 18 or 19-year-old girl was giving a young man in a wheelchair a lap dance. Shortly after, she was standing up on a table doing a table dance, then I look around again and she’s tongue kissing another chick. That’s when I decided that maybe I was too old to be trying to hang with the kids. On my way out, my 16-year-old daughter and 16-year-old nephew walked right past the security guard and into the disco. No ID needed!

Unfortunately during this cruise, I came down with a very bad migraine headache. I went to the ship doctor and was given a Tylenol 3 and an Ibuprohin. I laid down in the infirmary and after about 45 minutes my 2 cousins came down to check on me. My condition was not improving and so my cousins, who are both registered nurses, asked if I could be given another Tylenol 3. They were told that I could NOT be given another Tylenol because they had to be saved for other passengers. My cousins then began to talk amongst themselves about my vital signs. Apparently, when the nurse realized that my cousins had medical backgrounds she said something to the doctor, who then administered me with an IV that took care of the pain.

During one of the sea days, I went to the Oriental café to get something to eat. The chef was preparing some fried rice for a crewmember. The rice smelled and looked delicious. After it was cooked, He gave a bowlful of the rice to the crewmember. Since there was still some rice left in the wok, I asked if I could have some. I was abruptly told “NO. The rice is not on the menu. You have to have what is on the menu.” I said, "I don’t want the rice on the menu I want some of the rice that you just cooked." The cook glared at me and put two spoonfuls of rice on a plate and gave it to me. Never, have I experienced such sour attitudes among the crew. On this cruise great customer service was the exception NOT the rule.

There were many nights were there was nothing happening in the different venues. Other than the disco, the same old guy on the promenade and the casino, there was nothing happening. Midnight buffets were only served on 2 nights. On the other nights the only thing available for a late night snack was pizza.

On our final morning, the 16 people in my family met in the silver dining room for breakfast. The kids were at one table with the Hotel Director’s son, whom they had become good friends with. The adults were at another right next to them. The waiter must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed because as we placed our drink orders, he never smiled or gave us any indication that he acknowledged our request. So we asked again. He nastily said, “I HEARD YOU!” It appeared that once the waiter realized that our kids knew the Hotel manager’s son, his attitude did a complete 180-degree turn.

Carnival failed to meet the expectations of my family and me. The Liberty is a beautiful ship however service was sorely lacking. Many of the crew had nasty, sour attitudes. It is amazing how different people experience the same cruise. For us, Carnival was not a “Fun Ship.” What for some is tolerable, for others is unacceptable. My family concurs that, for us, the service was in desperate need of improvement. Therefore, we will not cruise with Carnival again in the near or distant future.

I see your going to try again....hope you have better luck this time then the last.

I captured the last thread - will I have to again? Time will tell.

Mrs. B- thank you for a honest review. we are sailing on the Liberty come

February. I thought the christmas cruise-- as much as it costs would be different then if cruising during the other times of the year. and I guess your review proved that correct.

I have read excerpts of a book written by a wife of a captain on a ship and reading between thelines that is what I took out of it.. the staff misses their families sooo very much that service suffers- I was hoping that asking people here of their time on the ship would prove that thought wrong.

Im sorry it was not what you expected. End quote

This was on another thread...

Reading of few of her pre cruise posts she was so excited and looking forward to her family reunion cruise. She started the thread a YEAR AGO.

Ms B, I too am sorry you did not have the vacation you were so looking forward to. I do hope you enjoyed your time with your Family. It is nice to get everyone together. Now that we live in a different state than our Children, I understand just how important that is. We are cruising with the kids and friends in March and I am looking forward to spending a week with them.

You know people can have all kinds of experiences. It was HER opinion of HER cruise. You may not agree with it, or like it, but you were not with her so don't judge her.

I may not like your opinion, or you might not like mine...but we do have a right to express our own feelings and opinions.

wow, what a review. sorry you had such a time.

But didn't you expect a bit much? same person singing, jazz in the cigar bar, custom cooking - I mean c'mon - it's not a private jet. I bet none of the cruise lines will cook what YOU want. same with discos - it's up to DJ what to play - you do not like you do not go.

MrPete

Was ANYTHING good?

bbiggar

I leave Sat. on the Liberty and looks like everything I experience could be better than this. If this is the worst that can happen I'm sure I will have a great time.

I have to agree on the Lido deck with dirty dishes left for hours on end. The staff there just didn't care on our Europe sailing last Oct. Also they held the afternoon tea in the cigar bar?????

I did include these annoyances in my comment card and hope that the situation changes before our April 1 sailing.

I'm cruising the Liberty in March and am curious if anyone else has had this kind of negative experience. This review sure dampens some of the pre-cruise excitement!

BrendaB1

Many GOOd reviews have been posted about this ship. Do a search on Liberty. Sorry I'm at work or I would add a link for you.

I can't wait to get on this ship. :D And I'm sure I will have a blast....like I always do. A positive attitude goes a long way when vacationing...on land or sea.

Then try this one: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=273682

seems to be the same sailing - different perspective.

DON'T let this ONE review dampen your excitement at all!!!!! You are going to find TONS of EVENLY balanced reviews on here about your ship - keep looking!!!! (Evenly balanced of good and bad, in my opinion, is what a review is. Things in the review will be helpful for the upcoming cruisers to use on their cruise.) This is only one person's opinion.

BTW - Welcome to the boards!! It's a great place!!!

I am not sure what happened on our Libery Cruise Nov 26-Dec 4 that was the same iten as the Christmas trip ... but with nearly every thing cited in the OP review, we had a total 180 degree opposite experience. So, maybe, it was homesickness for the staff? Our wait staff was so nice, kind, attentive, etc that dining was a pleasure each nite (maybe having the 545 seating helped). Did the Afternoon Tea a couple times -- our server at the Tea was also our head waitress at dinner ... the tea starts at 3:30, so makes it pretty tight to pull the double duty. I was surprised at how well the electronic air cleaners took all the cigar oder out of The Cabinet (location of the cigar bar AND the afternoon teas). Both my wife and I are supersensitive to "smoke" -- and were not bothered at all.

The staff on Lido deck were also attentive - taking dishes away as soon as we cleaned them (eg: taking salad bowl when we started on the main plate, etc). We almost always saw staff cleaning, polishing, etc. Our bathroom fully functional with a nice array of amenities.

As my wife told others, I liked the treatment we received so much, that I was ready to head out again right away!

Sorry the OP seemed to have a completely different experience.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. It puts a different perspective on my upcoming cruise. Can't wait!!

I should have added in my comment that we had a great time on the Liberty overall. Too tired after 10 hours of touring each port in Europe to enjoy the nightlife much but really enjoyed our wait staff DelRoy & Regis in the Silver dining room late seating. We ignored the dirty dishes thinking it was just that day and after seeing that it would be the case the entire sailing we just moved stuff that was in our way and went on about eating the great food and enjoying the view from the windows at the very back of the lido deck.

You will have a positive experience if you don't let the small stuff bother you. I would not be taking another group on the Liberty again this April if my experience wasn't allover a positive one.

I was on the same Christmas cruise on the Librety and loved it. I have been on about 8 or 9 cruises and this was my favorite. The ship is beautiful and very new and clean looking. The crowd was definitely younger, but I'm 20 so I was glad to see so many younger people. The New Year's Eve party was a blast.

The food was great and there are many options of places to eat. We loved the deli and the oriental. The deli is open ntil around 11 and the pizza is 24 and hours and very good.

There were some problems with finding deck chairs around the main pool, so I just went up to the topless deck because there were always chairs there.

I thought the late night comedian was hilarious. If you don't like that kind of humor, then don't go.

Many people have complained about embarakation, but we got there around 11:30 and were on the ship within 30 minutes. It was very fast.

She mentioned having problems with ordering 2 entrees, but we did that about every night and it was never a problem. Service in the dining room was a little slow, but we didn't mind. The food in the dining room was great.

Overall, we had a great cruise. I was on the Glory this summer and although they are very similar, for some reason I liked this ship so much better. The giant TV by the pool was very nice and the decor of the ship just seemed prettier to me. I would definitely go on this ship again.

Well I have to add my two cents. I was on the same cruise and hated it. Everything that Mrs. B said I second. The ship is dirty and not kept well at all. I cannot ever omagine going on another carnival cruise. The ship is a cheap renddition of a cruise ship. Glitz, but full of formica! By the way 8 cruises doesn't make you an expert. I have done over 30 and still feel I can learn!

GoinCruisin

So I omagine we still aren't going to get a review?? :o

Glitz, but full of formica!

Oh the Horrah!!

Someone else looking for a Sea Dream experience at a Carnival price.

I bet the Castaways will make it a FUN ship on April 1st. But then we have fun wherever we go. :D

I am sorry that you are so negative with your cruise. Sounds like you are a difficult person to please. Perhaps you should not cruise at all in the future.

We cruised the liberty in december. It was fantastic. There were no complaints. Yes. There were dirty dishes on the tables on the lido deck, however, there were plenty of seats available to eat at. Once you sat down, they did clean it. You have to realize that there are 3000 people on board. Things take time to clean. There was never any thoughts that they were slow to clean the table. Never had trouble finding a seat to enjoy the very good food the lido deck offered.

The room was beautiful. Yes, I noticed the toilet didnt flush when you pushed the button, however, it did eventually flush within a minute or so. I noticed during the day, it always took the toilet a minute to flush, but at night, it was always immediately. Due to the shear volume of people on board, you should expect the toilet to take some time. It was not a big deal to me.. Besides, Who stays in a bathroom after you are done.

Our waiters were fantastic. Never once did they give us dirty looks or gawk at ordering two dishes. I ordered two every night, as did the wonderful people we met at the table. Never did they say anything to us. On lobster night, they came around with more after we were done.

The entertainment was awsome. I could not have been better. Having gone to countless broadway shows, they were definately in comparison to any show you would see. The comedian was trashy.. Yes, but they told you it would be and it was at midnight. So if you dont like trashy comedians, then dont go and go to sleep.

Never had a problem getting off or getting on the ship. The ship is beautiful and the service was first rate. Everyone we met on board was having a wonderful time. I heard no complaints during our cruise.

I will go back again on this ship and carnival in particular. It rates in my book first. I have seen no other ship that will compare to what is offered on a carnival ship.

Sounds like you are a difficult person to please. Perhaps you should not cruise at all in the future.   I have seen no other ship that will compare to what is offered on a carnival ship.

I wouldn't consider myself a difficult person to please. I'm just accustomed to the superior level of service received on other cruiselines. Thanks for your advice on whether I should cruise again or not. I didn't ask for it. Nor do I need your advice. I'll determine when and if I cruise again, thank you very much.

Oh, I see that you have been on 1 cruise....I've been on many, all of which, besides my last, were absolutely wonderful. I tried Carnival and I didn't like it.

I see the conspiracy continues... I know the S&S redux grope has been warned before. Time to capture this thread again before some dark angel deletes it.

Great Review

Richard Parker

Don't want to pick any fights, but future Liberty cruisers please do not fret or start your cruise with a bad attitude. Cruising or sailing in any form is at least 95% attitude and if you start your cruise looking for trouble, that's exactly what you'll find. We saw some of the things mentioned in this review and instead of deciding that Carnival was not a good cruise line, we decided to turn our focus 5 degrees and see something that was great about our experience. Don't worry and keep looking forward to your great vacation. Who knows..maybe someday, we'll all be sailing through the panama canal together!

I am far from a negative person or someone who is hard to please. This ship is just sub par. The service is just not up to my liking. When a room floods and the toilets do not flush that is not a compaluint about the food or even surly servers on Lido deck. It is about the infrastructure of the ship. Yes, I do travel on other lines and as mrs. B states...I rarely have a problem. I was on a ten year old ship this summer in the Med. and it was better maintained that thie new ship. As a matter of fact, my daughter says it isn't new...it is two old ships stuck together. negative posts are a part of life.

Carnival Cruise Line pushes back on controversial onboard issue

C ruise lines operate each cruise as its own business more or less. The cruise operators track their costs and balance that against the value of the tickets sold, the various onboard extras people pay for, and any other revenue that comes in.

Some costs are fixed. You can't really change the size of the crew on a cruise-by-cruise basis. The same goes for fuel and onboard entertainment. Royal Caribbean has to pay the pub guitarist even if the pub is empty, and Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) has to pay its singalong piano bar players whether or not that venue draws a crowd.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line confirms ban on a popular cabin hack

There are, however, some costs the cruise lines have choices about. Before the pandemic, Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) showed movies all day on the big screen on ships that have a screen on the pool deck. It showed the movies that played in that spot at night more as background content.

Since the Covid restart, the cruise line now only shows movies at select times. That's a budget-saving measure that likely has not annoyed many passengers because it still offers recently-in-theaters films, at night, just not all the time.

The same logic applies to sports programming. Royal Caribbean and Carnival, on their namesake brands, generally have the big games and the playoffs, but they might not have every game customers wish to see.

That's because they're making choices as to which networks they license and that may leave them with coverage holes. Both cruise lines also have a fairly limited selection of television channels offered in passenger cabins and that's something some cruisers have complained about.

Carnival pushed for more TV choices

Some cruise ship passengers never use the television in their cabin while others like to use it to watch the in-house programming. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean have channels devoted to on-ship programming which often includes a daily show featuring the cruise director, as well as channels dedicated the excursions and booking future cruises.

There are, however, passengers who like to keep track of the real world while at sea, and one of those cruisers reached out to Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald.

"John Heald. Talk to the beards as you call them and tell them this. We need the main networks plus Fox News in this election year in the states. Plus we want USA Network, HBO, FX. As you guys are too cheap to pay for it make it known there should be an option of say $20-$100 Increase in the cost of the cruise. And add on like the internet or Cheers. That kind of thing. 90% would pay for an add-on like this," M wrote.

It's worth noting that the cruise lines generally do not have the ability to license television networks on a per-person basis. They either pay to have the channel on the ship, or they don't.

Selection, however, can vary by ship. Royal Caribbean ships, for example, that don't have the Playmakers Sports Bar have a thinner selection of sports channels offered in-cabin.

Carnival's Heald gives an answer, asks a question

"Well as I have mentioned many times before, the cost of these kinds of channels is massive," Heald wrote.

He then posed a question to his followers and got over 3,400 responses.

"Do you agree? Would you ever want to pay an extra fee for these kind of stations?" he added.

The results were mixed, but nobody seemed to like the idea of paying more for a bigger selection of channels.

"No! Vacation is disconnected time," Colleen Halleran Coon answered.

That was a very popular answer, but it was not universal.

"Yes, I would like more channels on the TV. I like to watch a little TV before bed," Beth McDonald wrote.

Barbara Thibault shared a practical approach.

"I would record everything I wanna watch. I'll watch it when I get home," she shared.

A few people did like "M's" idea.

"Yes, I would pay extra to have extra channels as I like to watch the news while having coffee and my travel partner is a late sleeper," wrote Shirley Abts.

"Yes, I sure would. Vacation is whatever you make of it and enjoy. I don't drink but I don't care that you have all the bars. I do enjoy lounging letting my mind rest and watching TV in the morning and evening," Travis Lester added.
