Manitowoc County Historical Society plans walking tour of former Stecker/Hein Cheese Factory, and more news in brief

Here's your latest news in brief..

Historic photo of Stecker Cheese Factory.

MANITOWOC - The Manitowoc County Historical Society will hold a historical walking tour of the former Stecker/Hein Cheese Factory from 3 to 5 p.m. June 12.

The 60-minute walking tour of the former cheese factory will highlight the history of the cheesemaking process.

The cheese factory stands in its original place on the Manitowoc River on the corner of Highway H and JJ in Manitowoc Rapids township in Manitowoc County.

The land in the area was owned by Ed Hein and included a sawmill on the river west of the cheese factory. When Martin Stecker came to work at the Hein’s Mill factory in 1919, it was owned by Edwin Behnke. Stecker bought the factory in the early 1920s after marrying Behnke’s sister, Esther. He kept the name Hein’s Mill, even though people in the area called it Stecker Cheese Factory. They made cheddar and colby cheeses with milk from farmers in an approximate 20-mile radius.

Advanced registration is required to attend. Participants will meet at the former cheese factory, 1024 Highway H Road, Manitowoc.

Other upcoming walking tours include Evergreen Cemetery Aug. 21 and Historic St. Nazianz Oct. 1.

Cost for each walking tour is $20 per person. MCHS members receive a 15% discount.

For more information or to register, go to ManitowocCountyHistory.org or call 920-684-4445.

'Planet parade' 2024: How to view the astronomical event

wi tour to sa

Get ready skywatchers, another astronomical event will take place on June 3.

A planetary alignment, or a "planet parade" according to the internet, where we'll see six planets – Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune and Saturn – grace our sky in the predawn hours, according to StarWalk.space , a stargazing and astronomical website.

How does the alignment happen?

The planets orbit the sun continuously in the solar system . The planets will slowly catch up to one another over time. Because they are all traveling along the same path, the ecliptic , as they pass Earth, it appears as though they are aligned, according to NASA . However, the alignment formation will be short-lived since each planet moves at different speeds, depending on its distance from the sun.

Where to look for the planet alignment

Looking in the eastern sky the planetary alignment will be visible almost everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, weather permitting.

You'll need high-powered binoculars to view the majority of the planets – Mercury and Jupiter will be extremely low in the sky. Uranus will be fairly dim and Neptune will appear star-like with binoculars due to its distance from Earth. But Mars and Saturn should be visible with the naked eye.

Planet alignments aren't extremely rare, especially with two to four planets. They do occur several times each year. With five or more planets aligning, it is less common.

The last planetary alignment seen in the Northern Hemisphere was on April 8.

Profiles of the six planets on parade

With eight planets in our solar system, they all have some very interesting traits. Here's a quick look at the planets aligning on June 3:

When will the planets align again?

Here's when StarWalk.space predicts the next six- and 7-planetary alignments will happen:

◾ June 3: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

◾ Aug. 28: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

◾ Jan. 18: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune

◾ Feb. 28: Seven planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. (The last time all seven planets aligned was on April 8 during the total solar eclipse).

◾ Aug. 29, 2025: Six planets – Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

WEATHER ALERT

3 advisories in effect for 33 regions in the area

Largest buc-ee’s ever to open in luling, the massive store is 75,000 square feet.

Rebecca Salinas , Digital Journalist

Buc-ee’s is about to open its largest store ever — and it’s only about an hour away from San Antonio.

Buc-ee’s will unveil its newest travel center in Luling on June 10, the company announced on Tuesday. Doors will open to the public at 6 a.m., with a ribbon cutting at noon.

Recommended Videos

The Luling store spans 75,000 square feet, making it the largest Buc-ee’s in the country . For comparison, the location in New Braunfels is about 66,000 square feet.

It was built next to the old Luling store, which opened in 2003 at 10070 Interstate 10. That was the brand’s first family travel center.

“We are thrilled to open the doors to the world’s largest Buc-ee’s travel center right here in the Great State of Texas,” Stan Beard, Buc-ee’s director of Real Estate and Development, said in a news release. “It’s particularly exciting, considering this is the Buc-ee’s that started it all, so we are really looking forward to celebrating with the incredible people of Luling.”

The new store has 120 fueling stations and all those same snack, drink and meal options, like Beaver nuggets and homemade fudge, as well as the brand’s famous clean restrooms.

The new store will employ at least 200 people, the release adds.

West Indies vs South Africa, 2nd T20I - Live Cricket Score, Commentary

wi tour to sa

SA have levelled the series. Once they only had 166, which was 6 more than what they got yesterday, not many gave them a chance. But the spinners - Shamsi and Linde - bowled with immaculate control and picked up wickets in the middle overs to break the spine of the batting order. Even the long batting line up didn't reallty bother much as SA had every base covered. That is it from this game. And we will look forward to your company very soon. The white ball cricket will be served more and more on your platter. So, munch on!

Bavuma: In the past we have been good in the first 6 overs. We didn't capitalize after that. But probably we got a par score after that. The spinners were amazing. George bounced back superbly. It makes your game easy as a skipper if your spinners control the game. We wanted to keep our energies high and maintain the intensity. Bowling quick is our strength. Rabada and Nortje try to do that. And also change the pace according to the wicket.

Pollard: Second day in succession our bowlers coming up trumps for us. We knew they will come hard at us. It is always difficult to defend in the first 6 with only two guys outside. Was a matter of bowling some good balls and try to limit the boundaries as much as you can. Having said that, they got off to a flier. But we used the conditions well after that and were happy when we kept them to 166. We had a normal discussion at the innings break as we were starting afresh at 0 for 0. I think we lost it between the 7th to the 11th over as we lost three wickets there. We are aggressive players by nature and that is no secret but myself and Pooran needed to control our aggression. We accept that for the team. Their spinners did a pretty good job. In the middle overs, may be we can rotate a little bit more.

George Linde | Player of the Match: I just went back to basics, the things got me into this team and it worked today. I think it was my day, and Shamsi has been exceptional for us the last few series. We had a team chat this morning and we know we could have done better yesterday and luckily today we did. Today was a lot slower (surface) and it spun as well and when that happens I'm always in the game. I was trying to slide it across the left-handers and I know they can hit those big shots and it was a deliberate plan.

17:44 Local Time, 21:44 GMT, 03:14 IST: A wonderful win for the visitors as their spinners made all the difference. They picked up wickets in the middle overs and broke the spine of the Windies' batting line up. Lewis once again fired but didn't do it for too long. Gayle and Pollard also didn't last long. A lot was left for Allen and in the end his cameo wasn't enough. South Africa have bounced back brilliantly after a poor show yesterday. The difference if you ask me was the powerplay where SA just scored enough runs. That helped them to get those extra few runs and that helped as the wicket slowed down a little. Linde and Shamsi bowling 8 overs between them and conceding only 35 runs with a bargain of 3 wickets turned the head on its game. They took some excellent catches as well to ensure Windies were never allowed to stay ahead. Hang on for the presentations.

Ngidi to Kevin Sinclair, no run, looks to lap and misses. SA win by 17 runs. They level the 5-match series 1-1. That was a fuller delivery again and the batter misses the lap shot

Kevin Sinclair, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Ngidi to Fabian Allen, out Lbw!! That looked plumb to the naked eye. That was an inch perfect yorker and the batter missed it to be trapped LBW. It was that out that even the batter opted against the review. Good knock from Fabian Allen and it sends out the message how deep is their batting line up. Fabian Allen lbw b Ngidi 34(12) [6s-5]

Ngidi to Fabian Allen, THATS OUT!! Lbw!!

Ngidi to Fabian Allen, SIX , and a flat six! Now you know why and how much important was that penultimate over from Nortje. That was a fuller delivery and was gunned over long-on in a flat manner

Ngidi to Fabian Allen, wide , slower, wider, Fabian Allen lets it go for it to be wided

Ngidi to Fabian Allen, no run, and that should do. Nails the widish yorker outside off and the batter inside edges the ball away to fine leg

Ngidi to Fabian Allen, SIX , add six more. 24 needed now. Believable? Doable? Fabian Allen went for the slog across the line and managed to get it over deep mid. Hitting of the highest order

Ngidi to Fabian Allen, SIX , Fabian Allen ain't willing to give up the fight. Was a length delivery outside off and has been dragged across the line for a sixer. Missed his mark did Ngidi and was put away with elan

Lungi Ngidi [3.0-0-30-0] is back into the attack

Nortje to Obed McCoy, no run, fuller length delivery and quicker as well for the batter to miss the big shot. 6 sixes in the last over needed. Terrific over from Nortje as he has almost nailed it for the visitors

Nortje to Obed McCoy, no run, fuller, almost up there and Obed McCoy fails to get under it as he inside edges the ball to the keeper

Nortje to Obed McCoy, no run, fuller, angled across, Obed McCoy throws his bat at it and misses. Excellent over from Nortje so far

Nortje to Obed McCoy, no run, full toss angled across, Obed McCoy looks to throw his bat at it and misses. 36 needed off 9 balls

Nortje to Fabian Allen, 1 run, mistimed slog to deep mid for a single as that was another low full toss

Safaris aren't the only tourist attraction in Africa. From cruises to wine tasting, here's what else you can do

A frica is blessed with some of the rarest and most beautiful animals in the world — a fact that entices tourists to book safaris year-round.

But safaris only scratch the surface of what the continent has to offer.

From wine tours to vibrant coastal cities, other experiences await those who are willing to go beyond game drives and delve deeper into the core of the continent.

Mountains, dunes and rivers

For those who love hiking, Africa is blessed with many peaks — from Morocco's Mount Toubkal to the continent's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

But there's also Mount Nyangani in Zimbabwe, which has a skywalk atop the Mutarazi Falls, the country's highest waterfall.

South Africa's Table Mountain can be climbed in a matter of hours, but adrenaline junkies may prefer to bungie jump from Johannesburg's Soweto Towers , or the Bloukrans Bridge along the country's famous "Garden Route."

Africa is ideal for travelers who crave adventure, said Zina Bencheikh, managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Intrepid Travel.

She recommends Madagascar's Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, which has two geological zones called the "Small Tsingy" and "Big Tsingy," which in the local language of Malagasy, refers to a place "where one cannot walk barefoot."

"Big Tsingy Trek is not your usual hike!" she said, describing it as a "labyrinth of limestone formations that resemble a forest made of rock."

In Namibia, travelers can climb the iconic Dune 45 to admire the sand dunes of the Sossusvlei, explore the eerie white clay pan of Deadvlei , or hike through the picturesque Sesriem Canyon.

At Victoria Falls, along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, travelers can whitewater raft, bungee jump or swim at the Devil's Pool, which is on Zambia's side of the falls. Similar adventures can be found in Jinja, Uganda, where the River Nile begins.

Hot air balloons are a popular and adventurous way to explore too, with a bird's eye view of the berber villages of Morocco to Kenya's Masai Mara.

Explore the beach

African beach towns combine beauty and culture, in places like Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique, Mauritius, Zanzibar, Ghana, Namibia and Egypt.

Mombasa, a coastal city in Kenya, is one example.

"Here, you'll experience African, Indian and Arab cultures in one place. Fort Jesus is one of Mombasa's notable sites and was built by the Portuguese in 1593. In less than 200 years, the fort changed hands nine times," said Luciemarie Swanepoel, owner of African Sky of Diamonds Tours & Safaris.

She recommends visiting Zanzibar to wander the Stone Town's labyrinthine alleys along with Kenya's Swahili Coast, the historical Gede ruins, and the UNESCO-named Mijikenda Kaya Forests .

"Madagascar … is another island gem, with beaches like Nosy Be and Ile Sainte Marie boasting palm-fringed coasts and vibrant coastal villages," said Swanepoel.

Durban and Cape Town are two of the best beach destinations in South Africa, she said, adding that travelers can kitesurf, snorkel, kayak or search for dugongs and whales there.

Go on a cruise

From budget-friendly houseboats to luxurious all-inclusive boutique lake cruises, Africa has a range of unique boating experiences.

Cruises along the Nile, Zambezi and Chobe rivers, as well as a cruise along Rwanda's Lake Kivu, come highly recommended, as water journeys can offer a spectacular viewing platform for wildlife.

"During a river cruise, you may spot a herd of elephants wading through shimmering water, witness great buffalo gathering along the water's edge, and even observe crocodiles stealthily slicing through pools. Hundreds of hippos also wallow in the river with just their nostrils poking out," says Kate Powell, general manager of the houseboat company Zambezi Queen Collection.

Travelers can also cruise between villages, fish, and bask in the tranquil waters.

"One can explore the Manambolo River on a pirogue, or wooden dugout canoe, under the shadow of towering rock cliffs [or] stop to explore a cave and the eerie tombs of the Vazimba, said to be the earliest inhabitants of Madagascar," said Intrepid's Bencheikh.

In addition to being a popular stop for world cruises, East and South Africa have their own ocean cruise routes which follow the coastlines and visit offshore islands. Silversea, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC have cruises departing from Africa.

The best places — and best times — to take a safari

Maritime journeys in Africa allow visitors to experience the continent's wildlife, cultures and landscapes from a unique vantage point, said Kevin Bubolz, Norwegian's vice president for Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"In Port Elizabeth, the Penguin Island Cruise excursion is a standout experience. You'll journey to the world's largest colony of African penguins in their natural habitat," he said. "If you're lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of playful humpback and bottle-nose dolphins."

Countries like Morocco, Namibia and Ethiopia have established wine regions. But South Africa is the continent's crown jewel.

"South Africa is renowned for its world-class wine regions, with the Western Cape being the heart of the industry," said Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro, Cape Town's tourism and trade agency.

"The areas around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl comprise the famous Cape Winelands, where visitors can tour historic estates, taste award-winning wines, and learn about the winemaking process."

Not only is Stellenbosch one of the best places for wine tours, it's also a culinary hot spot, known for its innovative food scene. Elmarie Rabe, the marketing manager at Visit Stellenbosch, advises travelers to select wineries that are committed to sustainable and organic practices.

"Also consider the traveling distance between farms, as Stellenbosch stretches over 60 square kilometers," she said.

The best time to visit is during the harvest season from late January to March, when the vineyards are in full swing. But every season has its own charm, she added.

"Spring offers lush landscapes and ideal weather, while winter is perfect for enjoying bold red wines by the fireplace. Summer provides sunny days perfect for outdoor wine tasting," Rabe said.

Jennifer Lopez  has canceled her ‘ This Is Me… Live’ summer tour to spend more time with her family and is “heartsick” over the decision, the singer announced to fans in her newsletter Friday.

The news does not come as a total surprise, as the tour has been beset with reports of poor ticket sales and many unsold seats on ticketing websites.

Various media reports said that the need for family time was necessary amid reports that she and husband Ben Affleck are splitting; reps for the singer did not comment on the reports.

Sources close to Lopez insisted that the tour was not being canceled due to poor ticket sales, despite the reports and seating charts, and pointed to strong sales in such markets as Newark, Orlando, Miami, Chicago, Anaheim and Toronto. However, seating charts for multiple other dates showed very poor sales.

Lopez initially announced the trek in February to coincide with the release of her latest album “This Is Me… Now” and its accompanying two films, which celebrated her reunion with Affleck. But she quietly canceled some of its dates last month in cities like Cleveland and Nashville, likely due to poor sales. The rebrand suggested a pivot from a tour focusing on the new album’s songs to one spanning her discography, a move that was presumably intended to entice listeners who didn’t connect with her latest material.

Variety will have more on the news as information becomes available.
