‘The Voice': Gene Taylor Scores Four-Chair Turn With ‘Unbelievable' Journey Audition

No one can sing a Journey number quite like the mighty Steve Perry. Or perhaps Gene Taylor.

Hailing from Vernon, New Jersey, now based in Brooklyn, NY, the 33-year-old Taylor has done the rounds of theater and performed for much of his life. Under the bright lights of NBC's The Voice on Tuesday night (Feb. 27), he showcased his talents for power and glory.

For Taylor's blind audition, a cover of Journey's 1978 song "Lights". Power, glory.

John Legend turned first, then Dan +Shay , followed by Reb McEntire and, finally, Chance the Rapper , for a four-chair turn and a standing ovation.

"I always love a tenor who can sing those beautiful big notes," says Legend, "but also you had finesse. It was just so expertly done as a vocalist." And with that, Legend launched into his sales pitch. Legend would also identify some classic vocal skills in the mix, a fusion of Nat King Cole with rock.

"Your voice is unbelievable," says Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay. "I was just sitting back and enjoying the music for just a second." Dan Smyers chimed in, "so much power, so much control. You're a star. We could tell you're a seasoned pro."

"I thought it was awesome," reckons Chance. The reason he was last to turn? "It was because I was really arrested by the performance. Your tone is so different, and I was just really into it. And then I turn and see you and you, like, kind of got this southern vibe to you." The Chicago rapper is convinced Taylor will "go really far" in the 2024 competition, thanks to his "distinct tone."

If the The Voice fans and coaches didn't already love the contestant, he made certain of it when he brought his mom on stage.

A minor hit following its release, "Lights" has enjoyed a second life as inspiration blast for Bay Area sporting franchises. Now, perhaps an unexpected lift after its exposure on The Voice .

"The way you were working the crowd," notes McEntire following the audition, "that was perfect to go with your beautiful voice."

So, with any doubts over his talents utterly erased, and all coaches rolling out the welcome mat, it was time for Taylor to make a decision. He chose Legend.

The 25th and latest season of The Voice began Monday. Watch Taylor's performance below.

Indiana Janitor Delivers Mind-Blowing Cover of Journey Classic “Don’t Stop Believin'” on ‘America’s Got Talent’ Season 19 Premiere

by Tina Benitez-Eves May 28, 2024, 9:48 pm

Richard Goodall didn’t know what to expect going into season 19 of America’s Got Talent on Tuesday, May 28 but after delivering a powerhouse performance of Journey ‘s 1981 classic “ Don’t Stop Believin ‘” he ended up with the Golden Buzzer. Before his performance, the 55-year-old Terre Haute, Indiana native told the judges that he’s worked as a janitor for 23 years and that the kids at the middle school where he works know him as “Mr. Richard.” Visibly nervous and sweating, Goodall said that he loved to sing and that it was his dream to get on stage and perform. “I was that kid up in my bedroom with the Radio Shack stereo,” said Goodall in his pre-audition interview. “My favorite thing was just to sit up and listen to my music, and I just belt it out. Eventually, I was like ‘I gotta find me a job,’ so I became a janitor at Chauncey Rose Middle School, which is only three blocks away from my house.” He added, “I’m not a fancy person. I take out the trash. I wipe off the tables, I sweep the floors. I’m just having fun and I’m trying to make people happy. The kids would hear me sing and they tell me that I’ve got talent. That’s why I’m here, that’s why I got on a plane.”

Goodall also described how it felt to leave his home state for the first time. “When I took off from Indianapolis, I felt that front wheel come off the ground and you have this floating [feeling], you’re no longer stable,” shared Goodall. “And that’s what this whole experience is like right now. It’s a good off-balance but until you actually do something, you don’t know if it’s right for you or not.” Cowell and the judges picked up on Goodall’s nervousness before his performance and quietly rooted for him. When the first notes of Journey’s iconic hit started, the judges and audience were visibly surprised by the song choice, and Goodall’s vocal range as he started belting out the song, echoing the near-exact sound, pitch, and range of ex-Journey frontman Steve Perry ‘s vocals. In 2022, Goodall received a shout-out from Perry after a TikTok video of him singing the song hit three million views.

At the end of his performance, Goodall received a standing ovation from the audience and judges. “Richard, you are my hero, because that was special,” said judge Simon Cowell. “I think America is gonna love you.” Sofia Vergara added, “That was spectacular. That was fun. This was an amazing surprise. I think you were perfect to come to ‘AGT,’ because you made our night,” while Howie Mandell joked “Maybe it’s because you’ve been doing it for 23 years but you just cleaned up. I would imagine every kid that has ever been in a school with you is just screaming. I just think you’re amazing.” When it was time for Heidi Klum to talk, she said “Richard, Richard, Richard, you knocked me off my feet. We all had the best time with you up there on that stage. I really feel something when I see you up there and I hear you up there.”

Standing up, Klum said, “And now this is what I’m going to do for you because I love you” before pressing the Golden Buzzer. In tears, Goodall said “I’ve never even been on a plane. This was not on my radar to come to California. It’s just a dream come true.” The Golden Buzzer secures Goodall’s spot in the season 19 finale. “Golden Buzzer [winners] are an elite group of people,” added Goodall in a post- AGT interview. “I never in a million years expected to be in that class. And I still can’t believe Heidi did that.”

Indiana school janitor goes viral with ‘don’t stop believin’’ cover, gets shoutout from journey singer.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A janitor at an Indiana elementary school has gone viral for his moving performance of the hit Journey song, “Don’t Stop Believin’” — and recently grabbed the attention of Steve Perry himself, the original lead singer of the band and a co-writer of the song.

Richard Goodall, 53, of Terre Haute, Indiana, does custodial work for Davis Park Elementary School.

He’s been employed with the Vigo County School Corporation for over 20 years.

At the end of the school year, staff and students were celebrating the fifth-grade graduation with a talent show.

At the conclusion of the program, the teachers asked Goodall to step up to the mic to sing — a moment that, unbeknownst to Goodall, would wind up spreading joy across the internet.

“It was all organic,” Goodall, who’s also a father, told Fox News Digital.

“I plugged in ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ and I just started singing and that’s what it was.”

The teachers at Davis Park know about Goodall’s talent — so they ask him to sing almost every year.

Richard Goodall

Usually, he prepares a song like  Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.”

But this year, he chose the 1981 Journey hit “Don’t Stop Believin’” to inspire the kids.

“I just wanted them to not stop believing and thinking they can do whatever they want,” Goodall said.

Going viral: ‘Never had this kind of response’

Mariah Denehie, a woman who works with one of the Davis Park students with special needs, posted a video of Goodall’s performance on TikTok, Goodall said.

While he was singing, Goodall saw Denehie with her phone pointed at him, so he knew she was either taking photos or a video.

The next day, while Goodall was cleaning and waxing the school floors, Denehie told Goodall that she posted a video of him on TikTok.

Richard Goodall

The footage by then had garnered 107,000 views.

“I’m looking at her like, ‘OK, is that good?’” Goodall recalled.

“And she goes, ‘I’ve never had that many.’”

“By the end of the weekend, it was at like a million,” Goodall added.

As of this week, the video has been viewed more than 3 million times.

Goodall had no clue he would go viral.

“I’ve never had this kind of response,” Goodall said, “I don’t know what to think of all this.”

I love this https://t.co/XrMPywaLfM — Steve Perry (@StevePerryMusic) June 29, 2022

The clip caught the eyes and ears of Steve Perry, the former lead singer of Journey who helped co-write “Don’t Stop Believin.'”

Perry responded to the video on Twitter on June 29, writing, “I love this.”

Perry also made the same comment on TikTok, where Goodall reposted the clip to his own profile.

Richard Goodall

Goodall responded, “Love your music sir!!! Thank you for commenting this means much to me!!! Thank you.”

Sang in his high school choir

Goodall has been singing for much of his life.

He sang in his high school choir.

Recently, he sang in a gospel choir for eight years until it shut down during the coronavirus pandemic.

Goodall said what he loves most about singing is that it gives something to others.

Steve Perry

“I just like people to smile and have fun and forget their problems for three minutes and 30 seconds — however long the song is,” Goodall said.

After he went viral, Goodall did a virtual audition for the television show “The Voice.”

On the program, Goodall sang “Don’t Stop Believin’” again — but he was turned down.

He said he isn’t sure if he’ll audition for other performance shows.

Richard Goodall

He compared his viral fame to a roller coaster.

“When you first start out, you hear that clank, and then you hear clink, clink, clink — and then you just start going up. It feels like I’m going up and I’m not sure what’s going to come after that. It’s just kind of a wild ride that I’m not used to.”

Until something else comes up, Goodall is continuing to work as a janitor at Davis Park.

“I’m just a regular person,” Goodall said.

“I’m happy,” he added. “I’m so thankful that I have food in my belly and a roof over my head and that I’m warm in the winter and cool in the summer.”

‘The Voice’ Season 23 Winner Gina Miles Journey to Stardom, All Performances

Corey Cesare

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Voice has officially crowned their Season 23 winner, 18 year old Gina Miles. The Paxton, Illinois native has had quite the journey on the series, so let’s look back at each of her performances.

Gina Miles The Voice Journey

Blind audition – “the one that got away” by katy perry.

Gina first came to The Voice stage singing a soft, yet powerful version of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away.” Right off the bat, Kelly Clarkson turned for the singer, later, Niall Horan followed Clarkson’s lead. Even though Clarkson tried her best to persuade Gina, Blake Shelton was all for Gina joining Team Niall. To get Gina to join his team, Horan explained that he doesn’t have the same industry experience as Clarkson, but he knows what it’s like to excel throughout a show. Gina chose Team Niall.

Battle Round – “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver

In the Battle Rounds, Gina performed an emotional rendition of “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver with Kala Banham . Although both singers were amazing in this performance, Horan picked Gina as the battle winner.

Knockout Round – “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye

In the Knockout Rounds, Gina faced against powerhouse artist Kate Cosentino. Gina impressed with her rendition of “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye in this round. This performance truly showed off how large her singing range is.

Playoffs- “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak

Following The Knockout Round, Gina returned with an emotionally beautiful performance of “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. This was truly the song that elevated Gina in the competition. It was the absolute best pick for her and her vocals.

Top 8 – “All I Want” by Kodaline

In Semifinals, Gina returned with yet another impressive rendition. Once again, she showed off her lower register with “All I Want” by Kodaline. America loved this performance, saving the singer from elimination.

Top 5- “Style” by Taylor Swift

For the Finale, Gina asked to perform a pop song by none other than Taylor Swift . Since we had only heard slower songs from Gina (other than her blind audition) this was a bit of a change. The singer hopes to pursue pop music professionally, so it makes sense that she’d want to perform a popular, pop song.

Live Finale – “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinéad O’Connor

Gina’s second Finale performance was yet another stunning slower song. “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinéad O’Connor once again showed off the singer’s abilities in her lower range. I personally loved the staging for this performance as well, it was so well done. It felt like Gina had already won the show and we’re now at her concert.

Coach Performance – “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel

In the Finale Part 2, Gina finally got the chance to perform with her coach, Niall Horan. The two picked a fantastic song for both of their registers. They truly had one of the best coach performances of the night.

The Voice's Terry McDermott on Major-Label Past, Journey Covers and Paul McCartney's Approval

Glint in their eyes notwithstanding, Terry McDermott says he and his mentor Blake Shelton never had a “devious master plan” for choosing songs to cover during his tenure on NBC’s The Voice .

“We tried not to overthink it,” says the man who would eventually become the Season 3 runner-up. “We just tried to be faithful to my artistry and to the people who were supporting me through the show. I didn’t want to have them all excited about classic rock of the ’70s and ’80s, and then suddenly change it up so much that I disappointed them.”

TVLine caught up with McDermott to talk about his ups and downs in the music business, his approach to a number of song arrangements during the season, and a special honor he got from no less a legend than Paul McCartney.

TVLINE | The show touched just a bit on how your former band Driveblind was signed to a major label back in 2006. How hard is it to get so close to mainstream success and then just fall short? Coming from Scotland, the fact that we actually got signed to an American major was nothing short of a miracle, we thought. Then, Yahoo had us in the “Top 10 records that you hadn’t heard in 2006,” which was kind of a backhanded compliment, but that was predominantly because the record company wouldn’t really step up their support. We had a lot of critical acclaim, but in the end, it was actually us that asked to get off the label because we felt that we were producing great music and, frankly, they weren’t keeping up their end of the deal. Although it was not the best ending, we did have a great run. We did a lot of coast-to-coast touring in the U.S., which for us was a life-changing experience. But we were pretty burned out. We toured hard, our relationship with the record company had soured, the guys were getting a bit itchy about going back home. I was married and had a child on the way, who was born while I was on tour. The reality was to call a halt to things. I think we all look back on that with frustration.

PHOTOS | The Voice : 25 Best Performances of Season 3

TVLINE | Did you have doubts at that point about continuing to try to make a living through music? I found myself in New Orleans and was very much contemplating giving up music altogether. I was just paying the bills by playing Bourbon Street, singing covers in the clubs. But again, the irony was not lost on me that if it hadn’t been for that experience in New Orleans, I don’t think I would have been remotely prepared for The Voice . It was there that I really tackled performing other people’s music and learning that kind of art form.

TVLINE | That’s interesting. My roots were very much in the British groups — The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Queen — and I hadn’t sung a wide variety of American classic rock. In New Orleans, I got experience doing that, and I also ended up singing blues, which was new for me. I was still questioning whether I should give up music when an old tour manager got in touch and actually had me very, very nearly singing for The Yardbids. But the timing was wrong. I didn’t have my Green Card, so I couldn’t leave the country. Again, that was frustrating, but it was also a nice reminder that opportunities were there. That refocused me. Then I formed Lotus Crush with two guys from Candlebox who I knew from touring. I was doing that record last year in places like South By Southwest, and I would have been doing it again this year had the tour not fallen through. The same week that fell through, a producer called me and asked if I’d be interested in being on The Voice . I wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I took the opportunity.

RELATED | The Voice ‘s Cassadee Pope on Lower-Register Woes, ‘Over You’ Magic and Glass Dresses

TVLINE | Did you have any hesitation about going the reality singing competition route? I know from experience how hard you have to work to reach people — even when you’re on a big record label. It’s not a pot of gold. It’s really just an invitation for hard work. So when The Voice came along, yes, I did have reservations and a lot of preconceptions about going on a television show. But I’m pleased to say they were blown out of the water very rapidly.

TVLINE | How did you settle on “Baba O’Reilly” for your Blind Audition? And did you go into that performance with an idea of which coach’s team you wanted to join? I hadn’t watched much of the show previously. In fact, I’d probably watched less of the show than any [contestant this season]. My wife’s a big country music fanatic, though, and what I had seen when she’d watched was that Blake was a very likeable guy, very genuine and bighearted — and he was no stranger to success. So I went in with the intention that if more than one chair turned, and if Blake was one of them, then I’d choose Blake. The choice of The Who song, that was no question for me at all. The Who is a band that heavily influenced Driveblind and certainly heavily influenced my music career. I thought it was the perfect foot to put forward.

TVLINE | My favorite performance of yours this season came in the Knockout Rounds, with “Maybe I’m Amazed.” Tell me about picking that song and why that one had a particular magic about it. Driveblind was on tour with Candlebox, and their singer Kevin Martin came into the dressing room one day and said, “I really think you guys could do a great version of ‘Maybe I’m Amazed.’” It was very, very shortly after that Candlebox performed it, and I’d get up on stage and sing it with him. We had such fun watching them perform it, and me participating in performing it, that we put it in our own set. It took off from there. So I became very well-versed in the song and when the opportunity arose to play it on the show, I was all about it because I had my heart and soul in that song, and it was a link to the past with Driveblind.

TVLINE | In the live rounds of Season 3, with the exception of your performance of Blake Shelton’s “Over,” you covered only songs from the mid-’80s or earlier. Was that strategic, or did it happen by accident? Yeah, there was a strategy to it. Blake had some choices that were more rooted in the ’80s, and my love of classic rock is probably more rooted in the ’70s. But I knew from my experience in New Orleans just how popular this music was with people, how much it resonated with them, and how much I resonated with it. That element of rock and roll, it’s missing right now, and I liked the idea of tapping into music that influenced me. Blake felt the same way. There was some discussion later on about maybe switching it up and doing something new, but I didn’t think that was right. My own musical taste is very much in contemporary British rock-and-roll bands and American indie bands, but I didn’t think that performing Kings of Leon or something like that would do me any favors or was any more true to me than performing something that influenced me like The Who or The Beatles. I was very happy to stay on that road. And what I didn’t want to do was a bad impersonation of a band that’s already out there.

TVLINE | For the Live Playoffs, you tackled Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin.’” Steve Perry’s vocal on the original is so iconic that I wonder if you had any reservations about attempting it. I was acutely aware, again from singing on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, that that song does two things: One, it grabs people’s attention the moment the first two bars are played. The second thing it does is it has everyone anticipating the big notes. So it’s a gamble, but if you can pull it off, it really knocks people dead.

TVLINE | You chose “I Want to Know What Love Is” as your defining moment in the competition, and repeated it in the finale. What was it about that song that made you decide to strip it down and give it an intimate arrangement? There was an element of good fortune about that track. I have to be honest, Blake was pushing for me to do Chicago’s “You’re the Inspiration.” I wasn’t quite as comfortable with that idea. And at the last minute, I was sitting with Melanie Martinez and her dad, we had our laptops on YouTube, and he happened to bring up Foreigner. The minute I heard the melody, it resonated. It was gut feeling after that. Straight away, I got in touch with Blake and said “I think this is the one.” His reaction was instant. He said, “I want that track. Yes, that’s the one to do.” We felt like we’d done the whole the hammer-blow rock and roll, and it was time to take a softer approach. It turned out to be the right choice.

TVLINE | Your Foreigner cover came during Top 6 week, and it really seemed like such a tight race at that point. Were you thinking to yourself that maybe you had a chance to win the whole thing? Would you have been content if you’d finished sixth? Because of my time in Driveblind, I definitely know the school of hard knocks in music. At that point in the season, I had a few things left in the locker that I could use, but I knew the competition was tough. I was saying to myself, “I don’t know if America is really going to embrace a foreigner and take him to heart. I don’t know if they really want to hear more of what I’m doing.” Genuinely, I didn’t think at that point that I would be going on to the Finals. But I was going to keep swinging and singing until people asked me to stop. When we moved to the next round, Top 4, that’s when I started to think, “Maybe I’ve got a chance here.”

TVLINE | In the Semifinals, when you covered The Beatles’ “Let It Be,” was there a struggle to balance putting your own twist on it without doing so much to a classic melody that you muddied it up? That was a no-brainer that song. We actually had Broken Wings in place for the Semifinals, and at the last minute the show threw a Hail Mary; they said ["Let It Be"] will never get cleared, it never has been cleared, but we’ll put it out there. Then I got the call the next day saying, “Everybody’s buzzing because it took personal clearance from the artist. And he cleared it.” And when Paul McCartney personally clears you to sing “Let It Be,” you don’t say “No, thank you.” That brought with it an entirely different set of pressures, not because the vocal stretches you or because it’s an exceptionally difficult song, but it’s all about giving it heart and soul, and it’s also so beloved, that you don’t really want to take that song apart. I mean who would have the arrogance to say they could improve on The Beatles? I was just trying to be very careful and very true to it, trying just to resonate with the message of the song and be very honest about it.

TVLINE | Did you ever push to do one of your own original tracks on the show? It did cross my mind, and there were a lot of people that got in touch saying they’d love to hear a Driveblind track or a Lotus Crush track. But I felt like you have to live in the real world. I’d been doing songs like “Let It Be” and “Don’t Stop Believin,” songs that people are very affectionate toward. And ultimately, Cassadee was doing so tremendously well on iTunes; you have to live in that same realm or pay the price. So, it was never really an option. If iTunes wasn’t king in this situation, then maybe I could’ve done an original.

TVLINE | Speaking of iTunes, you cracked the Top 10 a number of times in the last month or so. How do you take that momentum with you into 2013? What’s your plan? I think that’s the 64 million dollar question. I feel like I’ve got one advantage, which is my background has very much been as a musician making music. It’s kicked me out there in the world. I’ve been through the experience of a record deal and I’ve seen the ups and downs. I’m no stranger to toiling if necessary and getting out there and working hard. I feel like with a good team around me, I can try to bridge that gap and get to as many people as I possibly can. How exactly we’re going to do that, I’m excited to see. I don’t have the answer yet because there’s quite a few things being discussed. Contemporary rock in some shape or form has to be where I live. At the same time, I do want to lean on my roots, which are bands that I listened to growing up, a lot of classic-rock bands. That doesn’t mean I want to be retro or be a tribute act in any way. I’d like to be progressive — but it certainly has to lean on my music roots.

School Janitor Going Viral for Amazing Cover of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’

You never know where you're going to find the next amazing voice! But word of mouth has started to spread about Richard Goodall, a grade school janitor who performed a cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" for an audience of youngsters at a school assembly that mirrored a concert experience.

Goodall, who hails from Terre Haute, Indiana, casually stepped up to the mic, using a boombox for musical accompaniment, and showed the kids that he had some amazing pipes. As you can hear in the video shared below, an audible "Oh god" response can be heard from an audience member after he sang the first line.

And the kids got into it as well, first waving their arms along to the song, then slowly rising to their feet to dance along, eventually providing Goodall with a standing ovation by the end of the video.

Goodall posted his first TikTok earlier this month, covering the Lee Greenwood song "God Bless the USA." But things started to really take off once he posted the video of himself singing the Journey classic to the school assembly. Shared on Twitter (as seen below) by a poster under the moniker Arlong, the video has surpassed over 16.2 thousand "loves." Arlong added in their post, "Nothing but respect for school janitors, especially ones like this.. People don’t realize how cool students actually become with the janitors. They really were the coolest adults in the building by far."

And Goodall didn't just stop at "Don't Stop Believin'." He's also posted a pretty awesome cover of Journey's "Still They Ride" (seen below) and "Stone in Love" as well as other selections via his TikTok account . He even got a response back on his performance from Journey's original vocalist Steve Perry , who offered "I love this," to which Goodall beamed, "Love your music, sir!!! Thank you for commenting. This means so much to me!!! Thank you."

According to video posted on his TikTok account, Goodall took part in an open Virtual Call for The Voice , but was not selected to move forward for the show. He later posted, "Disappointed you bet! For one moment I bought into everyone telling me how great I am but... I’ll continue on. I’m sad I thought 2 million views would make a difference. But I guess I’ll still have to take out the trash at 6am. But that’s what I do. And I’ll continue to do it. Love you all for you positive support. It’s hard being told your not good enough."

True to his word, Goodall has continued posting covers, most recently taking on songs from Billy Joel, Chicago and Kenny Rogers among others.

Why Kate Middleton’s New Portrait Has the Internet Divided

A portrait of kate middleton by artist hannah uzor—who also painted king charles and the late queen elizabeth—has divided the internet, with people saying the artwork doesn't resemble the princess..

Not everyone thinks Kate Middleton 's newest portrait is a stroke of genius.

A painting of the Princess of Wales by artist  Hannah Uzor —who previously painted the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III —was unveiled on the cover of Tatler on May 22, sparking polarizing reactions from royal watchers.

The piece, which was commissioned by the British magazine for its July 2024 issue, showed Kate wearing the famed Lover's Knot tiara and a white caped gown from Jenny Packham while standing in front of a blue gradiant background.

Pearl earrings similar to a set that once belonged to  Princess Diana were included in the artwork, as were Kate's sapphire engagement ring from husband Prince William , her Royal Family Order brooch and a large blue sash signifying her position Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

But despite the portrait replicating the exact look Kate donned to a November 2022 state dinner at Buckingham Palace , some critics did not see the resemblence.

"It looks NOTHING like her," one Instagram user commented under the cover, while another wrote, "I really respect the artist but I also don't see Catherine here."

Meanwhile, a third commenter noted that Kate "NEVER looks that uptight or tense in her arms or shoulders," though they did appreciate "how delicate and realistic the dress looks below the bodice."

However, there were also fans of the painting, with one calling it "so lovely" in the comments.

"It's a beautiful artistic expression of poise and grace," another user added. "Well done!"

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tatler (@tatlermagazine)

The release of Kate's painting came days after her father-in-law Charles  unveiled his latest royal portrait , which showed him in a red uniform of the Welsh Guards that almost seamlessly blended in with the crimson background.

Though the piece's artist  Jonathan Yeo  said he deliberately minimized the visual distractions to " allow people to connect with the human being underneath ," the internet was left divided over the unique artistic choice.

"I'm sorry but his portrait looks like he's in hell," one critic quipped in a May 14 post shared on the royal family's Instagram page. Meanwhile, another thought the painting was of a "floating head in a sea of red."

"I don't get a good feeling from viewing this portrait at all," a third user remarked. "Apologies to the artist, but it's not pleasant to look at."

However, in response to the critique, a rep for Jonathan shared in statement May 28 that "the background color in the portrait of King Charles was not intended to represent blood. The color has also been exaggerated by some of the digital reproductions."

E! News has reached out to Tatler , as well as artist Hannah for comment but hasn't heard back.

Why Nashville is a hot spot to make thousands a month with a side hustle

the voice journey cover

  • Nashville freelancers contribute more than $3 billion to the economy
  • Nashville featured as one of the top cities for creative freelancers in the nation.
  • Music City ranks third in revenue for creative services at over $1.4 billion.
  • Former preschool teacher quadruples her income with freelance career.

Daniella Wheeler moved to Nashville in 2011 to pursue music with her sister in their country duo “The Wheeler Sisters.” Despite releasing top-40 radio hit “This is Gonna Get Ugly,” the sisters still had to wait tables to make ends meet. Plus, Wheeler describes her record deal as “overly 9-5” and soon came to resent what she once called her passion.

So she refocused and has established an eight-year career as a luxury real estate agent.

But she still craved a creative outlet.

Sparked from a love of hosting and cheese, Wheeler launched a flourishing side business from her passion — making elaborate, personalized charcuterie boards.

Wheeler, like an increasing number of workers, embraced the idea of having a side gig to find the right career match. Popular side gigs, from podcasting, blogging, delivering packages and pet sitting, are now reliable entryways into entrepreneurialism.

The number of full-time independent workers, or freelancers, grew from 64% in 2022 to 71% in 2023, according to Fiverr freelancing platform. However, three in 10 independent workers still hold a permanent job for a guaranteed income.

“2024 is the year of the side hustle,” said Wheeler.

The traditional path — from college to a 9-5 job — no longer guarantees a high-paying career. The opportunity to launch a successful business from a passion is an increasingly attractive proposition. Freelancers in Nashville and beyond are capitalizing on this shift in the career landscape, contributing over $3 billion to the economy in the process, according to Fiverr.

A recent study by Fiverr names Nashville as one of the top cities for creative freelancers in the United States.

The report, which analyzes the top 30 markets for independent workers, ranks Music City third in revenue for creative services at over $1.4 billion in 2023, following Los Angeles at $6.4 billion and New York City at $5 billion.

Wheeler founded “Dani Bella’s Boards” in 2022, mainly creating charcuterie spreads for open houses. She meticulously curates an array of meats, cheeses and vegetables for events serving upwards of 200 people.

"I'm a 'yes man' to a fault," Wheeler said. "If anything, I need to prioritize myself, but I want to put my head down, and I want to work. I'm not married and I don't have kids, so I want to take this time to create a business that runs itself."

As the sole employee of this venture, Wheeler has had to balance selling luxury condos in The Gulch with fulfilling charcuterie board orders.

She reinvests a percentage of her commissions back into her side gig through shopping and preparations. Soon, she said part of the revenue will go to hiring new staff.

From teaching to voice acting: An entrepreneurial journey

When Susan Fouche graduated college with her English degree, she believed teaching was the only career path for her. But, after hitting a rough patch financially during the Great Recession, she decided to take a chance on a side gig.

After all, people often told her she has an excellent speaking voice while reading stories to her preschool students.

So, voice acting seemed like a natural fit.

“It would always cross my mind where people would say they really liked the way I talked and when I read stories to kids,” Fouche said. “I just thought, 'Well, maybe I could narrate audiobooks.'"

Today, she has narrated over 100 audiobooks and voiced commercials for companies like Pfizer and Toyota.

It all started when she landed her first voice acting gig in 2014. By the end of the school year, she quit teaching to focus full-time on the new venture.

Ten years since she began voice acting, Fouche has gone from capturing sound waves on her $99 microphone to building a home recording studio. Now, she is preparing to lighten her workload and retire at 50 years old.

For independent professionals like Fouche, freelancing offers the possibility of financial freedom, the benefit of an additional income and the chance to pursue a creative outlet.

“With the ever-evolving job market, many are seeking additional sources of income and greater flexibility in their careers,” said Jonathan Pinedo, founder of Freedom Bound Business, an online marketing company that researches employment trends.

Since transitioning to full-time freelance work, Fouche's salary grew from $2,000 to $8,000 a month, allowing her to put her kids through private school and college.

"I never ever thought in a million years that I would be able to make this kind of money," Fouche said. "You know, (I used to think): 'I'm a teacher. I'm just always going be the way I am.' And to see my income go up like this, it's been great. It's been a great ride. I'm very, very blessed."

Podcasts are the top side hustle for Tennesseans: 'Make an impact'

More and more, Tennesseans are becoming interested in adopting a side hustle this year. Research by Freedom Bound Business analyzed the most Google-searched side hustles in the state, with podcasting topping the ranking with an average of 1,303 monthly searches.

When Angie Lawless and Brandon Miller set out to create their show, they said they searched “how to start a podcast" once or twice — especially since Miller hadn’t listened to one before.

Lawless and Miller co-founded Wagon Wheel Title, a boutique title and real estate settlement provider, in 2006. The two met while working at a corporate law firm and shared an interest in real estate investing and development.

Inspired by the 2013 New York Times article proclaiming Nashville the next “it” city, they, along with their partner Steven Morris, wrote “Climbing the Charts: The Ascent of Nashville.” The book is a collection of dozens of interviews following the development of Music City.

This project was more challenging than the three attorneys anticipated but, when the book was published, they received a greater return on investment than money. Lawless and Miller said devotion to their community fueled their work more than the promise of additional income.

“What we realized was, it was providing and sort of filling our cups with this connection to our community that we, I think, kind of took for granted,” Lawless said. “Can we make an impact and can we make a difference?"

Lawless and Miller wanted to continue connecting with the community, so they created the “Climbing the Charts” podcast in 2022. With their target audience being Nashvillians, their guests are influential people whose work impacts the city.

“I think part of the goal for the podcast is giving a megaphone, or at least a magnifying glass, to people that are kind of writing that next chapter,” Miller said.

Though their biggest returns have been gaining stronger senses of community and purpose, the podcast also provides credibility when pitching investors for their main business Wagon Wheel Title.

“I think, as a young person, (podcasting) is probably one of the best things that you could do for your career too,” Lawless said. “Because you’re striving to set yourself apart, to stand out, to show credibility.”

Everything to know about The Voice Season 24 contestant Jacquie Roar

Jacquie Roar performs on the voice 2404

Roar, a 37-year-old wedding DJ and country singer from Oregon, immediately entranced the Coaches during the Blind Auditions with a cover of “Here for the Party” by Gretchen Wilson. The performance yielded a 4-Chair Turn, with Gwen Stefani netting the contestant — all thanks to Roar's 6-year-old daughter, Leilani. While Reba McEntire seemed like the obvious choice there, Stefani has acquired a serious knack for country music after marrying OG Voice alum, Blake Shelton .

Roar squared off with BIAS during the Battles round , performing a duet of Jelly Roll’s "Need a Favor." BIAS came away victorious, but knowing Jacquie was too good to send home, Reba exercised her right to a Steal. In any case, Roar didn't give her much of a choice, lobbying the other three Coaches to save her from a permanent exit. “I'm a very hard worker, I'm a very hard singer, so somebody hit that button because I’m not leaving this stage," she said just before Reba hit the button.

She went up against Tom Nitti and Alison Albrecht for the Knockouts portion , ultimately winning a ticket to the next round with a cover of "Girl" by Maren Morris. "I chose Jacquie because she knows her range [and] her showmanship is wonderful," Reba explained. "She's comfortable in her own skin."

Then came Playoffs as Roar put her vocal chords to the test with an absolute classic: Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain." The performance was so good, in fact, that Gwen Stefani voiced regret over letting Jacquie go during Battles. "I was sitting here going, ‘Who are you, Gwen Stefani? Like, how could you let her go to Reba? Like, you’re so dumb!’” Stefani exclaimed.

In the end, Roar was chosen to move onto the Lives alongside fellow country singers, Jordan Rainer and Ruby Leigh.

Throughout the Live brodcasts, she has sung "Wildflowers and Wild Horses" (Lainey Wilson), "Don't Blame Me" (she covered the Taylor Swift track with Mara Justine and Nini Iris), "Alive" (Sia), and "Alone" (Heart). The latter performance nabbed her an Instant Save from the audience , allowing her to become one of the Top Five finalists with Huntley (Team Niall), Lila Forde (Team Legend), Mara Justine (Team Niall), and Ruby Leigh (Team Reba).

Boeing launches first crewed Starliner spacecraft

By Jackie Wattles , Ashley Strickland and Maureen Chowdhury, CNN

We've wrapped up our live coverage for the day. You can read more about the Starliner mission here .

Here's what to expect during Thursday's docking

From CNN's Ashley Strickland

Eager to continue following Starliner's journey? NASA will resume live coverage Thursday at 9:30 a.m. ET on the agency's website .

Williams and Wilmore are expected to dock with the International Space Station at 12:15 p.m. ET tomorrow.

The hatch between Starliner and the station is expected to be opened at 2 p.m., and the astronaut duo will be welcomed by the seven crew members already aboard the station at 2:20 p.m. ET.

And NASA officials will share the latest details about Starliner's historic mission at 3:30 p.m. ET Thursday.

Will Starliner be used for tourism?

From CNN's Jackie Wattles

Boeing's Starliner lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Wednesday.

Boeing's Starliner spacecraft was designed under the same NASA program as SpaceX's Crew Dragon — which has already carried 13 missions to orbit for NASA astronauts as well as paying customers.

That's allowed under NASA's Commercial Crew Program, which from the outset intended for SpaceX and Boeing to own and operate their spacecraft. The space agency buys flights for its astronauts, and the companies are allowed to sell seats if they want.

SpaceX has taken full advantage of that: It has flown tourists and foreign astronauts to the space station in a partnership with Houston-based company Axiom . SpaceX has also flown a mission for finance billionaire Jared Isaacman called Inspiration 4 — and more are on the schedule.

But Boeing, which has suffered lengthy delays and costly setbacks during Starliner's development, has been less certain of whether Starliner will be used for joy rides.

"Right now we're focused on the six missions that we have on contract with NASA," said Mark Nappi, vice president and Starliner program manager at Boeing, during a news briefing prior to the May 6 launch attempt. "The private astronaut missions are of interest later in the decade — but right now, the focus is on getting certified."

A snippet from a Starliner overview packet posted to Boeing's website, however, is a bit more assertive:

"We are selling the extra fifth seat on NASA missions," the document reads. "Potential customers include commercial and government-sponsored astronauts and even private citizens flying as tourists. Starliner is also planned to be used for crew transportation to Blue Origin’s upcoming Orbital Reef commercial space station."

NASA officials know a thing or two about scrubbed missions

Bill Nelson peels a grapefruit on NASA's Columbia space shuttle during an Earth orbit between January 12 and 19, 1986.

Both NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and Ken Bowersox, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate, are former astronauts, so they know what it's like to make the thrilling journey to space and back — and the long wait to lift off when things don't go as planned, like the two scrubs Williams and Wilmore faced ahead of today's successful launch.

Nelson and Bowersox sat next to each other during the news conference.

"The administrator actually has the record because he did it first," Bowersox said, gesturing to Nelson. "They scrubbed six times on his launch. And on one of my launches, we scrubbed six times."

Selected as an astronaut in 1987, Bowersox flew five times on the space shuttle and once on a Roscosmos Soyuz, logging more than 211 days in space.

Bowersox said Williams and Wilmore probably spent longer than he did in crew quarantine because of the distance between their scrubbed launches.

Nelson trained and flew with the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1986.

"At least the weather was not a concern for the three times on Starliner," Nelson said. "The weather certainly played a big part with regard to some of our scrubs. So, yeah, it gets old hat when you strap in, and it's just another day at the ranch."

Starliner crew will land on dry land rather than splash down. Here's why

From CNN's Jackie Wattles & Ashley Strickland

The Boeing Starliner spacecraft lands at White Sands Missile Range’s Space Harbor in New Mexico after a test flight, in May 2022.

Today's launch was a monumental moment for the two astronauts heading for space.

But what goes up must come down.

After Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore spend eight days aboard the International Space Station, they'll come home in their Starliner capsule.

The earliest possible landing date is June 14, but the astronauts may stay longer on the station because there is nothing "magical" about that return date, NASA officials said Wednesday.

"We've got a prescribed landing date that goes along with this launch date, but I just want to emphasize that nobody should get too excited about that date," said Ken Bowersox, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate. "We have to have a lot of conditions that are just right before we bring the Starliner home and we're going to wait till the conditions are right and we've accomplished the test objectives before we do that."

And the vehicle will make its return to Earth unlike any US spacecraft before it.

Rather than splashing down in the ocean, as SpaceX's Crew Dragon and other capsules dating back to NASA's Mercury Program have done, Starliner is going to hit terra firma.

There are five possible landing sites, generally across the southwestern US: Two in New Mexico, one in Utah, another in Arizona and, finally, one in California.

Why land on land rather than splash down?

Seawater is rough on spacecraft. The salt can corrode components. And then, there's the sheer hassle of getting ships out to sea to rescue the crew.

NASA official: The space station's urine pump change will happen soon

Starliner is carrying a crucial replacement pump that helps convert urine on the space station into drinkable water.

The pump failed last week, and since then, urine has been stored in bags on the space station while the crew awaits the replacement pump.

"On the pump change, we're gonna get to that as soon as we can," said Joel Montalbano, deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate. "My hope is we get to it this week. If not, it'll be early next week."

Today's launch means a lot to Boeing, official with commercial crew program says

From CNN's Maureen Chowdhury

The launch means a lot to Boeing, said Mark Nappi, vice president and program manager, for Boeing's Commercial Crew Program.

He said that the launch was the first step in the program's mission, and there are many more phases.

Nappi added that for the rest of the year, Boeing is focused on getting certified for the Starliner 1 mission.

Boeing official: "We don't see it as a competition" with SpaceX

In this screen grab from video, the vice president and program manager of the Commercial Crew Program for Boeing Mark Nappi speaks at a press conference in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Wednesday.

When asked about the relationship between Boeing and SpaceX, long viewed as a rivalry, Mark Nappi, the vice president and program manager of the Commercial Crew Program for Boeing, said he believes others see it as a competition.

"We don't see it as a competition," Nappi said. "We've got two providers that are going up to the International Space Station and SpaceX is up there, and we're up there now as well. So, this is something that NASA has planned and we've accomplished it."

Nappi saw Musk's congratulatory post on X about the flight.

Here's what happens next for the Starliner crew

In this screen grab from video, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program Steve Stich speaks during a press conference at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Wednesday.

NASA officials shared that astronauts Williams and Wilmore may enjoy a slightly extended stay aboard the International Space Station once they arrive. The earliest possible landing date is June 14.

Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, added that the only issue mission teams are assessing is a system called a sublimator on Starliner, which provides cooling during the launch and landing phase.

"What that does is it creates a block of ice essentially," he said. "And then as heat is passed into that icebox, a little thin layer of that ice turns into a vapor and that rejects heat away. We used a little bit more water than we expected."

The team will assess data of the sublimator to learn more about how the system is functioning for future purposes.
