Safari is the native browser on Apple devices. While it's usually fast, sometimes Safari can be slow or laggy. When this happens, it can be bothersome, and some might even download another third-party browser.

If you're noticing that Safari is running slow on your iPhone, there are several things you can do to speed it up again. Give these tips a try, and hopefully, Safari will be at full speed in no time.

Check Your Internet Speed

Before passing the blame on Safari, it might be a good idea to check your internet speed. That way, you can make sure Safari is the issue and rule out anything else before continuing.

If you're connected to Wi-Fi, open another computer or device on the same Wi-Fi network, then head to Speedtest's site and check your internet speed. You won't want to do this on your iPhone, as Safari issues can slow your connection time, giving you a false negative.

If your internet speed is fast, then Safari is the issue, and it's time to fix it.

1. Close All Your Safari Tabs

Safari can usually handle a lot of bandwidth and keep many pages open. However, some websites drain Safari data. By closing all the currently open tabs, you can confirm if one of the open websites was using too much data.

To close all the tabs on Safari, open Safari and hold the Tab button in the bottom right-hand corner. A prompt will appear for you to close all the tabs. Once this appears, hit Close All Tabs . Then, give Safari a try again.

2. Clear Your Browsing History and Data

If clearing the tabs didn't fix the issue, you can reset Safari and clear up the cache, speeding it up in the process. To clear Safari, head to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Data .

Once you do this, relaunch Safari and see if it's loading up pages quickly enough. If it's faster for a little while but begins to slow down again, proceed to the next tip.

3. Check Your iPhone's Storage

If your iPhone storage is almost full, that means it can't handle much else. Safari, like most apps, uses device storage to store data from the app. And low storage means Safari won't have enough memory to work.

This is why some users find Safari temporarily faster once they clear their browsing history and data. However, some users might have used so much storage that Safari might not even speed up when you clear the cache.

Luckily, it's easy to check if this is an issue. All you need to do is head to Settings > General > Storage and see how much space your iPhone has used. And if it's almost full, you might have to delete some large files.

4. Reset Network Settings

When all else fails, you can reset your iPhone's Network Settings. Doing this will reset all network-related connections on your iPhone, hopefully speeding up Safari in the process. Head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings to do this.

You need a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection on your iPhone or iPad, or Safari will run slowly. To check your Wi-Fi or cellular connection, look at the symbols at the top-right of your screen. 

The four vertical bars represent your iPhone's cellular connection. The more bars are white, the stronger the connection. If only one or no bars are white, Safari will run extremely slowly or not at all. You may also see 5G, 4G, or 3G, depending on your iPhone model, and whether or not your cellular carrier offers those speeds. If you're relying on your cellular connection alone for your internet connection, Safari may still be slow if the network is congested or you've used or almost used up your data for the month. 

The pie slice-shaped icon to the right of the cellular connection bars represents your iPhone's Wi-Fi signal. The more white bars you see, the stronger your connection. If you aren't connected to a Wi-Fi network or are out of range of the network you are connected to, you'll see LTE instead. This means that your iPhone is relying on its cellular connection to browse the web.

• Turn off location services: Turning off location services can improve the performance of your iPhone 13 Pro. To turn off location services, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and toggle it off.

If your iPhone or iPad is running slow

If your iOS or iPadOS device freezes or has performance issues, try these tips.

Check your network conditions

Many apps require an internet connection for their content and other functionality. If the network that you're connected to is congested — for example, at an event with many people using the same network — apps might take a while to open or display their content. Your device can also seem slow as it repeatedly reconnects to new cell towers when you're in a moving vehicle.

Even if your device indicates a strong signal, you might need to wait, try again in a different location, or use available Wi-Fi. If you continue to experience issues with cellular data speed, availability, or performance in multiple locations, contact your carrier.

Close an app that's not responding

If an app stops responding or freezes, you might need to force it to close and then open it again.*

From the Home Screen of iPhone X or later or iPad, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause slightly in the middle of the screen. On iPhone 8 or earlier, double-click the Home button to show your most recently used apps.

Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close.

Make sure you have enough storage

If your device is low on storage, iOS or iPadOS automatically frees up space while installing an app, updating iOS or iPadOS, downloading music, recording videos, and more. iOS or iPadOS only removes items that can be downloaded again or that aren't needed anymore.

You can check your device's storage in Settings > General > [Device] Storage. For best performance, try to maintain at least 1GB of free space. If your available storage is consistently less than 1GB, your device might slow down as iOS or iPadOS repeatedly makes room for more content.

If you need to free up some space, follow these steps to turn on the storage-saving recommendations built in to iOS or iPadOS:

Go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage and read the recommendations that iOS or iPadOS might provide.

Tap Enable to turn on a recommendation, or tap a recommendation title to review the content that you can delete.

If you don't see any recommendations — or if you need to free up even more space — you can review the apps on your device. They're listed on the same [Device] Storage screen along with the amount of space that they use.

Tap an app, then choose from the options:

Offload the app, which frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data.

Delete the app, which removes the app and its related data.

Depending on the app, you might be able to delete some of its documents and data.

Turn off Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode is an iPhone and iPad feature that extends battery life by reducing the amount of power that your device uses. In Low Power Mode, some features are turned off and some tasks might take longer to complete. If your battery icon is yellow, Low Power Mode is on.

Consider leaving Low Power Mode off if you need your iPhone or iPad to function without low-power restrictions. You can turn Low Power Mode on or off in Settings > Battery.

Keep your device from getting too hot or cold

iOS or iPadOS adjusts your device's performance if it's become too warm due to external conditions, like being left in a hot car or used for an extended time in direct sunlight. Move your device to a cooler location and let its temperature adjust.

Very cold temperatures can also slow your device. If your device runs slowly after being exposed to cold, move it to a warmer location.

Look at your battery health

All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age. Over time, the rechargeable batteries in all iPhone and iPad models will diminish in their capacity and peak performance and will eventually need to be replaced. iOS can show show battery health and recommend if an iPhone battery needs to be replaced. Go to Settings > Battery and tap Battery Health. Battery Health is available only on iPhone.

Slow iPhone? Clearing 'Other' Storage Could Rev Up Your iPhone

If you've used your iPhone (or any phone) for a while, it's natural for your device to start slowing down with age. That may mean it's time to bid your current iPhone goodbye and splash out for a new one ( after trading in ), but other times the issue of a sluggish iPhone might be within your control. In fact, the solution could be as simple as clearing out your storage space. No, not that  storage space. Your iPhone's "Other" storage.

If you've run out of storage before and attempted to manually free up space, you may already be familiar with Other storage. If not, let's run through what that is before we dive into how to shrink this pesky category.

What is the iPhone's Other storage?

The Other section is a mysterious, catch-all corner of your iPhone's storage. Think of it as a place where things like system files and Siri voices can be stored. But it can also be a memory hog, and that is mainly due to caching. Your cache stores elements of apps or websites so they load faster the next you use them. The cache collects items as you browse the web, stream videos or movies and when you send text messages with pictures or video. In apps like Google Maps and Chrome,  cached data can soon start to eat away at your available storage  on the device. 

To check how much space Other storage is using up, you'll need to   go to  Settings  >  General  >  iPhone   Storage . After the iPhone makes its calculation, you'll see a bar graph of the categories taking up your iPhone's storage. The other storage section is usually the gray portion on the far right of the graph. Assuming your Other storage is taking up more space than it should, here are a few things you can do that could help you change that.

iOS 11 introduced new ways to free up space, including the option of offloading apps you don't use regularly.

Offload apps

Not to be confused with deleting an app, offloading an app means the app is removed from your device, but all data is retained , for when you decide to reinstall it. Take advantage of this trick, especially if you have apps like Google Maps that use a lot of space but don't store much data. To offload an app, go back to iPhone Storage in Settings > General, tap on the app that you want to offload and then  Offload App . 

Here's a tip: In the iPhone Storage section, there's a list of apps with a number next to each name indicating the storage it uses. You can immediately get an overview of which apps are hogging memory or taking up just a little. This can help you decide which to offload.

Clear out the Safari cache and close tabs

If you use Safari often, your iPhone may be storing web history and data that you simply do not need. To clear Safari's browser cache, go to Settings > Safari and  Clear History and Website Data. And if you're a Chrome user, here's how to clear out cache on Google's browser .

Closing out tabs also helps free up storage and keeps your device running smoothly. You can manage how frequently Safari will close open tabs by going to  Settings  >  Safari  >  Close Tabs . You can keep closing tabs manually, or let Safari close out tabs that haven't been viewed for a day, a week or a month. 

Stop storing texts forever

By default, your iPhone stores all of the text messages you send and receive... forever. This is convenient if you need to look up a 15-month-old conversation, but not so convenient if you need your storage space back. To stop your phone from saving texts forever, open up  Settings  and tap Messages . Scroll down until you find Message History and tap Keep Messages . Change Forever to 30 Days or 1 Year . A pop-up will ask you if you want to delete older messages; tap Delete to proceed.

Reset your iPhone

If all else fails, a surefire way to dump a lot of the junk contained in Other storage is by  resetting your iPhone , even if you can't fully empty it.

Fix: iPhone Lagging and Freezing iOS 17/17.5.1

iOS updates bring in new features, enhance the security of the iPhone, and also optimize it to perform better. Sadly, multiple users have reported that ever since they updated to iOS 17.5.1, their iPhones have been lagging. Moreover, there are constant frame drops while scrolling, keyboard freezing when typing and even the browsing experience on Safari has deteriorated. If you’re facing similar problems, here are ten fixes to try.

How To Fix iPhone Lagging and Freezing After iOS 17.5.1 Update

1. change keyboard settings.

With iOS 17, Apple updated the Auto-Correction feature with a transformer language model which also improves the Predictive Text feature. The keyboard has inline predictive text recommendations too. While this is a step in the right direction, it consumes a huge chunk of resources, especially if you have an older iPhone. 

Therefore, we suggest disabling the Auto-Correction and Predictive Text feature on your iPhone as it might help fix your iPhone lagging. Especially because other users have reported that doing so helps resolve the issue.

2. Remove Dictionary and Add It Back

The Dictionary feature helps you “Look Up” the meaning of words on your iPhone. You can add dictionaries of several different languages. But for some reason, these dictionaries might be the reason your iPhone is lagging. 

Yes, it does not make a lot of sense, but a user on the Apple Discussion Community has reported that removing all the dictionaries and then adding back only the ones you use helps fix iPhone lagging issues. Therefore, we suggest you do the same. 

• Open Settings on your iPhone and head to General . 
• Tap the Dictionary option. 

• Restart your iPhone. If you’re unaware of the steps to do so, ask Siri to restart your iPhone . 
• After your iPhone restarts, head back to Settings > General > Dictionary . 

3. Disable Siri Contact Suggestions

Since Siri won’t be actively analyzing your contacts for suggestions, you’ll free up some processing power.

• Open Settings on your iPhone and head to the Contacts option.
• Tap the Siri & Search option. 
• On the next screen, disable the Learn from this App toggle. 
• Disable the Show Contact Suggestions toggle too. 

4. Change Your Wallpaper

Although Apple removed Live Wallpapers on iOS 16, you can still set various still images as your background. Unfortunately, those with too many elements (e.g., Weather & Astronomy, Live Photos, and Kaleidoscope) can cause some lagging. It’s best to opt for simpler options.

• Go to Settings > Wallpaper .

5. Clear Safari History and Data

If Safari is lagging, freezing, or crashing on your iPhone running on iOS 17.5.1, the first thing you must do is to clear Safari’s History and Website Data.

• Open Settings on your iPhone and navigate to Safari .
• Scroll down and tap the Clear History and Website Data button. 
• Select the All History option from the Clear Timeframe menu. 
• You can also enable the Close All Tabs toggle. It won’t delete any tabs that are in a Tab Group. 
• Finally, tap the Clear History button. 
• Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap the Advanced button. 
• Tap the Website Data button. 
• On the Website Data page, tap the Remove All Website Data button. 
• Tap the Remove Now button to confirm your selection.

6. Clear Background Apps

Apps running in the background can also be the reason why your iPhone is lagging. Please clear all the background apps and it might free up the RAM and fix lagging issues. 

• For iPhone with Face ID: Swipe up and hold on to the Home Screen .  For iPhone with Touch ID: Double tap the Home Button .
• Swipe up on all the app s in the Recent Apps tray. 

7. Force Restart iPhone

Temporary bugs and glitches in the software, apps, or services can also cause the iPhone to lag. Force restarting your iPhone can help get rid of these bugs and fix the lagging issues. 

Steps to Force Restart iPhone (iPhone 8, iPhone SE 2nd Gen and above) 

• Press and release the volume up button .
• Press and release the volume down button .
• Next, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. 
• As soon as you see the Apple logo, release the Side button . Please do not release the Side button before the Apple logo appears on the screen. 

Steps to Force Restart iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus

Press and hold the Volume down and Side buttons simultaneously. Release the buttons once the Apple logo appears. 

Steps to Force Restart iPhone 6s or below 

Press and hold the Side and Home buttons simultaneously. Release the buttons once the Apple logo appears. 

8. Update All Apps

Outdated apps on your iPhone might be causing some lagging.

• Open the App Store on your iPhone.
• Tap on your Profile at the top right corner. 
• Scroll down to the Available Updates section and tap the Update All button. 

9. Check Storage Space

Most of us are aware that iPhones tend to lag when running extremely low on storage space. If you haven’t already, please check the free storage space on your iPhone. If it is low, we suggest uninstalling apps or unused media files to free up storage space as it might help fix the lag or stutters on your iPhone. 

• Open Settings on your iPhone and head to the General option.

• The next screen will display the amount of occupied and total storage space on your iPhone. You can delete apps that you don’t use often to free up storage space on your iPhone. 
• Tap on any app you want to delete.

Also, in case your iPhone displays a “Recommendations” option, tap on it and follow the recommended actions to free up storage space. The quickest way to empty storage space is to use a maintenance tool. 10. Factory Reset iPhone

In this article, we mainly focus on clearing web browser cache on an iPhone, but you should know that other types of cache include mobile app cache and CPU cache.

What you'll need: Everything you need to clear your browser cache is within the iPhone's settings app or the Safari app, so grab your iPhone to get started.

Keep in mind that clearing the cache can clear private data, which can close all open tabs in Safari. This is also likely to log you out of all your websites, prompting you to sign in again the next time you open them. 

How do I clear the cache from Chrome on iPhone?

If Google Chrome is your preferred browser, it may have a substantial amount of data stored on your device, which could also slow down performance. 

To clear the cache in Chrome, open the Google Chrome app and follow these steps:

• Tap  Settings .
• Go to  Privacy and Security .
• Select  Clear Browsing Data .
• Select the time from which to delete the data (if you want to delete all your browsing history, choose All Time ).
• Go through the items you'd like to delete, like your Browsing History, Cookies and Site Data, Cached Images and Files, Saved Passwords , and Autofill Data.
• Confirm by tapping  Clear Browsing Data  at the bottom of the screen.
• Tap Done when you've deleted the Chrome cache.

Clearing the browsing and cache data in Google Chrome doesn't close all open tabs, but it will refresh each tab and log you out of websites. Once you tap on one of the tabs you want to access, you'll have to log back in.

How can I browse on Safari without history?

If you're learning how to clear cache on an iPhone, you may also be wondering if there's a way to use Safari without saving any browsing history. You can turn on Private Browsing by following these steps:

• Open  Safari .
• Tap on  Tabs .
• Choose Private .

You can also enable private browsing by going to your iPhone Settings, finding Safari, and toggling on the private option. 

How do I clear my app cache on my iPhone?

To clear the app cache from your iPhone Settings app, you can either delete the app and reinstall it, offload it, or try to clear the cache from within the app. Unfortunately, iOS apps don't have consistent settings across the board that would allow you to clear the cache of every app.

Not exactly, though app offloading can help if your phone is slowed down by low storage. To offload an app  means to uninstall an app without deleting any documents or data associated with it.

Are cookies and cache the same thing?

Cookies and cache are not the same. Cookies are data files that websites send to your phone, including things like saved passwords to keep you logged into an account or even the website preferences from the previous time you visited.

Though they do sound harmless, cookies can also track how you browse the internet. How do I check iPhone storage?

On an iPhone, Settings can show you what's taking up most of your media storage, like photos, videos, and music. You can also see what each particular app's storage consumption is, which includes temporary data. To view the details of your iPhone's storage space, follow these steps:

• Go to the iPhone Settings .
• Tap on General .
• Select iPhone Storage .
• Scroll through to find the app you're looking for.
• Tap on the app to view storage status and options.

Next Year's iPhone 17 Unlikely to Feature TSMC's First 2nm Chip

Reports that next year's iPhone 17 will adopt TSMC's next-generation 2nm process are "fake news," a reputable source of accurate predictions about Apple's plans claimed on Monday.

"The 2nm process won't be mass-produced until the end of 2025, so the iPhone 17 definitely can't catch up," read a machine translation of Phone Chip Expert's post . "It won't be until the iPhone 18 that a 2nm processor will be used."

"Anyone who has seen the capacity planning chart will know that this is yet another report from an unscrupulous media outlet," added the user, commenting on an article by Zhitong Finance that repeated claims recently made by Taiwanese newspapers based on "industry sources."

TSMC plans to begin volume production of 2nm chips next year, but multiple reports out of Taiwan suggested that the company had been accelerating the process ahead of schedule to secure a stable yield for mass production. Apple is TSMC's main client, and it is typically the first to get TSMC's new chips. Apple acquired all of TSMC's 3nm chips in 2023 for iPhones, iPads, and Macs, for example.

The 2nm fabrication process, also known simply as "N2," is expected to offer a 10 to 15 percent speed improvement at the same power or a 25 to 30 percent power reduction at the same speed compared to chips made with the supplier's ‌3nm‌ technology. The A17 Pro chip in Apple's iPhone 15 Pro models is manufactured with TSMC's first-generation 3nm process, known as N3B. Apple's M4 chip, which recently debuted in the new iPad Pro, uses an enhanced version of this ‌3nm‌ technology.

Code in iOS 18 has confirmed that all four iPhone 16 models are set to use Apple's next-generation A18 chip, based on TSMC's N3E process. N3E is TSMC's second-generation 3nm chip fabrication process, which is less expensive and has improved yield compared to TSMC's first-generation 3nm process.

The Weibo user contesting claims that 2nm will be ready for the iPhone 17 has a track record of accurate predictions. Phone Chip Expert was the first to reveal that the iPhone 7 would be water-resistant and that the standard iPhone 14 models would continue to use the A15 Bionic chip, while the more advanced A16 chip would be exclusive to the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro models. These forecasts were later confirmed by multiple credible sources and were proven correct when the products were released.

Safari is slow to start up, have to wait several seconds each time

Safari on my iPhone 14 is slow to start up , every time, I try to reset the phone , clean cache etc. , how can I fix this issue?

I’ve been having similar issue on iPhone 15 with iOS 17.4.1. Try this I think it has to do with their upgraded security features and I can’t believe they haven’t acknowledged this yet. Try going into settings, Apple ID, iCloud, private relay and toggle off. You can try toggling off for a day and seeing if it gets better and then back to worse the following day. I tried this and it worked, then I finally ended up just turning it off completely. It’s terrible that I have to downgrade my security to view apps without lagging.

One of the biggest problems with the green travel trend is information and misinformation. Jus as resorts add a yoga class and claim to be wellness vacations, hotels and resorts often “greenwash” their practices and claim sustainability through long established hospitality industry practices such as offering you the chance not to have them wash your sheets and towels or putting larger reusable shampoo dispensers in. With dozens of competing “certifying” bodies, some of them self-serving or selling endorsements, and no Forbes 4 and 5-Star equivalent seal of approval for sustainability, it can be very hard for consumers to separate the truly green from the hangers on. You have to look at every property in a deeper dive and drill down on the details, and I’ve done that in this case. Great Plains Conservation is the real deal.

It's also one of the very best, period, proving that you don’t have to make sacrifices to do good. I’ve traveled many times on safaris to Africa, visiting eight different countries and almost all of the best-known luxury safari lodge brands. There are a lot of exceptional high-end safari camps and lodges, but even in this elite field Great Plains stand out.

Not exactly roughing it-this is one of just four suites at Zarafa Camp.

If you have the National Geographic Channel , or like me, grew up with their documentaries on network television, you probably already know the force behind Great Plains, Derek and Beverly Joubert. He is a legendary nature filmmaker, perhaps the greatest ever, and she is an acclaimed wildlife photographer. They have co-produced more than 40 films for National Geographic, where they are both explorers-in-residence, including one of the most popular wildlife films ever released, Eternal Enemies: Lions and Hyenas, which has been watched by an estimated one billion viewers around the world. It won an Emmy and was filmed at the Great Plains property in Botswana (many of the films were made at their camps). They have also won eight other Emmys (and 23 nominations), a Peabody, a Presidential Order of Merit, and the World Ecology Award. They’ve authored more than a dozen books, and in partnership with National Geographic, founded the Big Cats Initiative and Rhinos Without Borders.

But the biggie is Great Plains Conservation , which they co-founded in 2006. The group works with local governments and communities to protect the environment and its wildlife through low-density, environmentally responsible tourism. As explained below, they take “low density” extremely seriously. Revenue from the 18 camps, suites and lodges in Botswana, Kenya and Zimbabwe has helped protect more than 1 million acres of wild lands in Africa.

The Great Plains model has been to find areas that are under threat and stress, secure landscapes large enough to protect its wildlife populations, and go through the required processes to change the status of the land to protected areas that still offer economic benefits. They have successfully transformed former agricultural or hunting land to wildlife conservation, with an emphasis on photographic tourism. Camps are small and built ultra- sustainability, designed so that they can be removed and leave virtually no trace. No new wood is cut, they build foundations out of reclaimed railroad ties, buildings are almost exclusively recycled hardwoods and canvas, they have state of the art solar farms, green water purification systems, waste treatment systems, even a biogas process that converts vegetable waste into cooking gas. In their newer projects they have managed to almost completely eliminate the use of plastics across the board.

But true sustainability is not just about power and recycling. What Great Plains Conservation does so well is to protect and enhance the environment it lives in, and their initiatives have greatly improved the populations and security of wildlife, especially threatened species such as rhinos and African wild dogs. This in turn benefits their customers—I’ve been on dozens of game drives but never had the kind of over-the-top African wild dog sighting I had this spring in Botswana, and that’s because they helped that species survive. Because of insane poaching, it has become hard to see rhinos at all in many of their traditional African habitats, but in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, the private concessions of Great Plains are some of the most protected habitats on earth. Sustainability is also about the locals, and the Great Plains Foundation is their U.S. based 501c3 charitable arm that backs land protection, conservation programs and community programs including childhood education and rural solar power projects in Africa.

But the real highlight is wildlife, and these camps have some of the best viewing anywhere. There is ... [+] likley no better chance to see rare African Wild Dogs than in the private Selinda Reserve.

Frankly, if you go on any luxury safari to Africa you are going to have a very good time, you cannot miss, and I think it’s the epitome of the “Bucket List” vacation, the definition of (at least) once in a lifetime. But it’s even better if in addition to having a very good experience, you feel very good about it, and that’s what Great Plains adds to the mix. These lodges are feel good places, if not feel great places.

I was first introduced to Great Plains a decade ago by Dennis Pinto, Managing Director of Micato Safaris and a good friend (and conservation collaborator) of the Jouberts. New York, Nairobi and Cape Town-based Micato is the gold standard in the safari world, the best tour operator specializing in the field, and I don’t say that lightly, because there are a lot of good ones. Micato is not just the best safari company I have worked with; they are the best tour operator in any form of travel that I have seen in more than 30 years covering the industry.

They turn every customer into a VIP who can completely stop thinking and start enjoying while on vacation, and have insider access to individuals and experiences no one else can match. They’ve also won just about every other big award there is, including the sustainably focused World Savers Award from Conde Nast Traveler—five times—the World Tours Award presented by the New York Times , Best Outfitters on Earth from National Geographic Traveler and 50 Tours of a Lifetime from National Geographic Adventure . Micato Safaris is a luxury experience for sure, but I have told every friend who has ever asked me for safari advice the same thing: “If you can afford to do a luxury safari, you cannot afford to not use Micato.”

When it comes to these trips, the devil is in the details, and no one has those details—and VIP insider access—wired better. If you don’t want the best room and the best guide at your camp when you arrive, if you prefer not to use the diplomatic line to get out of the airport, and if you are comfortable sitting on a dirt runway in the middle of the bush waiting for your propellor plane with no back up plan if it doesn’t show, than you don’t need this kind of help. But most people who go on safari do, even if they are booking these amazing Great Plains Lodges, because lodge companies do one thing very well, operate lodges, but there are a lot of other moving parts, like the arrival and departure stays stay in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg or Cape Town, pre and post safari extensions such as Victoria Fallas, Zanzibar or gorilla trekking, and the actual process of getting to the safari lodges and their off the grid airstrips. If you use a good travel agent or advisor (and you should) they can take care of this for you—but chances are good that they are just calling Micato (and maybe marking it up).

So, when Dennis Pinto told me “You need to go check out what Great Plains is doing in Botswana,” I took it seriously, especially since Micato sells all the other top brands (Singita, One & Only, Wilderness, etc.). I was so impressed by their flagship camp, Zarafa, that I named my dog after it. I cannot even imagine a higher level of endorsement than that. My Zarafa is eight now, and an everyday reminder of how awesome a trip can be. At that time, it was the best safari camp I’d been to, including a lot of heavy hitters. I just went back in May, and it is even better after renovations and improvements. In recent years there have been a lot of ultra-luxury safari lodges opening that wow with creature comforts, and some are even “fancier,” but few offer the same combination of quality and doing good. Plus, the guides are amazing, everyone wants to work for the Jouberts, and the private acreages are so vast that the wildlife viewing experiences, which at the end of the day is the reason why we go, are off the charts. There is a reason why National Geographic makes its movies and does photo shoots at these places—the animals.

Zarafa Camp is part of Great Plains’ Reserve collection, its highest luxury tier, and all the Reserve-level properties are Relais & Chateaux members—the only ones in their respective countries. Relais & Chateaux is the oldest and most respected consortium of smaller independent properties with a luxury and culinary focus, and fine food is a requirement. This is something Great Plains delivers in spades across all its camps, which are all-inclusive with food, wine, spirits, amazing guides, first rate vehicles, and all activities except spa treatments and helicopter flights. The most unusual inclusion is the use of a very high-end camera and zoom lens setup for every room. This reflects the Joubert’s history as photographers, and just the giant lens on my camera would have cost me over $2,000—and I’d have to lug the heavy equipment around. Photos are a big part of doing an African safari, but I’d guesstimate that less than 1 in 20 visitors brings gear of this quality. At each camp they give you the loaner camera, help you use it, and then download all your photos to a thumb drive to take. I’ve been to a lot of safari lodges, and this is definitely not business as usual.

I also visited the latest property in the collection, the new and very unique Sitatunga Private Island, named for the rarest of all antelope species, which I saw here, from my tent deck, and nowhere else in all the countless times I have been on African game drives. There are many full-time rangers across Africa who have never seen a Sitatunga. The camp is on its own island in the middle of the Okavango Delta and just opened last July, and I was there this spring. It is the company’s only water-based Reserve-level camp, and all the activities (except heli-flight seeing) are by boat. Besides exploring the eco-system in boats, Sitatunga offers the rare opportunity to visit uninhabited islands and do ranger led game walks on foot among the full spectrum of African wildlife, but in a setting where they have not been habituated to human tourists, a really authentic—and potentially scary—experience. Sitatunga is not the place to go for a one-stop first-time safari, it should be tacked on to more conventional wildlife experiences with game viewing drives, but if you have been on safari before it is something totally new and different, and it can be coupled with the Selinda properties (see below) using a boat transfer.

The Selinda Camp is in the heart of the Okavango Delta, and you won't forget it.

Another thing the Great Plains lodges have in common is that they are small and very intimate but set on huge private reserves. Zarafa has just four suites, each of which holds one couple and spans about 1,100 square feet inside, plus extensive decks, infinity plunge pools and outdoor showers, as well as showers and copper soaking tubs inside. Each is also equipped with very high-end binoculars and all the creature comforts, including a fully stocked bar and mini-bar, all on the house. Many of the camps, including Zarafa, have actual gyms, despite holding no more than a dozen guests, and others, such as Sitatunga, add exercise bikes, yoga gear and weight equipment to each suite.

In addition, there is the Dhow Suite, so private and inclusive they market it as its own camp. The Dhow Suite is two-bedrooms and 2,600 square feet and set up as a self-contained safari lodge for up to four, with its own chef, butler, ranger, vehicle and wine cellar, so guests staying here do not have to use the common areas or interact with anyone else if they do not want to. But even if you include this unit, all of Zarafa camp never has more than 12 guests. There are now similar self-contained two-bedroom private chef suites at several of the Great Plains Reserve properties, including Selinda Camp and Duba Plains Camp in Botswana, Mara Nyika and Mara Plains in Kenya, and Tembo Pains in Zimbabwe.

The way Great Plains protected reserves are typically structured is that they are very large, with a handful of camps at different price points or dramatically different settings in different parts of each reserve. So, there are two luxury headliners in the 320,000-acre Selinda Reserve, Zarafa and its Dhow Suite, along with even smaller Selinda Camp, a luxury three-suite camp on par with Zarafa, and its private Selinda Suite. This camp sits on the Selinda Spillway, the main source of water feeding the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta and the main appeal of Botswana safaris. This unique and fascinating eco-system breathes life into much of Southern Africa and is the reason why Botswana typically has the very best game viewing in Africa. The Selinda Camp is in a very watery area, and while it has world-class conventional game drives, the Land Cruisers often ford rivers, and they have boating options as well. While Zarafa and Selinda are in the same huge reserve, they have such dramatically different settings that simply splitting your stay between them—within driving distance so no bush plane flight is needed for the transfer—is like going to two very different places, just easier.

Then there is the Selinda Explorers Camp, the opposite of the Dhow and Selinda Suites, the most affordable option here. But while it is less opulent and less pricey, it is no bigger, with just three regular tents and one 2-bedroom family tent. The “tents” are still very comfortable and have full bathrooms and showers, and instead of plunge pools there is a main common swimming pool at the camp. You are hardly roughing it, with exceptional food, beverages, and the full array of activities included, game drives, night drives, daytime guided bush walks, fishing, children’s activities and so on. All-inclusive rates begin at $1,105 per person nightly, which for this level of safari is a great value. Zarafa Camp begins at $1,935, though all the properties offer stay 3-nights and get one night free or stay 6-nights and get two free specials almost all the time, plus additional value-added packages and deals in shoulder and off-seasons, even throwing in things like helicopter transfers.

Finally, there is the six-tent Okavango Explorers Camp, at the same level, so that even at the lower price point you can combine two distinct experiences within the same reserve. Zarafa and Selinda Camps are both over-the-top Relais & Chateaux Reserve-level camps, while the Explorer Camps are more “normal luxury.”

If you were counting, there are a total of 19 accommodations holding a maximum of 44 people, including the luxury suites, across four camps in an otherwise totally private 320,000-acre reserve—or nearly 7,300-acres per person. When you see a leopard or African Wild Dogs (very rare but this is one of the best places to see them), you might well be the only party at the viewing, unlike Africa’s mini-van jammed National Parks.

Selinda is one reserve, but in similar fashion, the Duba Plains reserve, also in Botswana, has the Reserve level 5-suite Duba Plains Camp, the one-party Duba Plains Suite, and the 5-tent Duba Explorers Camp, all within an 82,000-acre private reserve. It’s even lower density in Zimbabwe, where just the 10-person Reserve-level Relais & Chateaux Tembo Plains Camp and its sibling luxury suite occupy the private 290,000-acre Sapi Reserve, which is also a very important land restoration project and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When the Jouberts describe their ethos as low-volume, low-impact tourism they are not kidding, with less than one visitor for every 20,000-acres of wilderness.

In Kenya, the private 70,000-acre Mara North Conservancy borders the public Maasai Mara National Reserve, essentially a National Park, so guests of the Great Plains property here, the Mara Expedition Camp (an Explorer-level property), can explore both the private acreage and the enormous public region. The all-new Mara Toto Tree Camp just opened here this month (July 2024), housing just eight guests in treehouse-style accommodations elevated in the tree canopy. The Relais & Chateaux Reserve-level Mara Nyika Camp is on a similar private reserve bordering the Maasai Mara, the 50,000-acre Naboisho Conservancy. Mara Plains Camp is another Reserve-level luxury property on its own 33,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy, also abutting Maasai Mara. This property adds one of the self-contained ultra-luxury suites.

Ol Donyo is Great Plains “biggest” camp, a Relais & Chateaux Reserve-level luxury spot with eight suites and one “regular” two-bedroom suite, sleeping 20. It is the only lodging within a 274,000-acre private reserve between Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks and adds unique activities such as horseback rides and mountain biking.

They also have Mpala Jena Camp, a single party staffed home at Victoria Falls, the most desirable of the many post-safari extensions, and truly one of the wonders of the world. Stays can be easily coupled with safaris at the Zimbabwe camp.

The variety of camps and settings is amazing, but there is a continuity, a feeling you get at every Great Plains Camp, and when you leave one and arrive at another for the first time, you feel like a regular. The hardest decision most people make going on safari is whether to go to East Africa or Southern Africa, though if you have the time, you can do both. I can’t help you choose, it’s a close call, which is why you need to use an expert safari tour company, but in either region, you cannot go wrong with these camps.
