Well, well, well, it seems that the British Royal Family is at it again – stirring up speculation faster than a tea party at Buckingham Palace. Today's rumors surrounding the much-anticipated Royal Announcement, hinted at yesterday and expected tomorrow, have sent Twitter into an absolute frenzy. Oh, the drama. It's moments like these that make you wonder if we're all just pawns in the world's longest-running soap opera – or if we're just really, really bored. Needless to say, the reaction to anything to do with the Royal Family is expected - and the Royal Announcement memes and reactions are flooding in.

Twitter, that virtual gossip mill of the modern age, has been buzzing with speculation about what the Royal Announcement could possibly entail. “Royal Announcement” is coming… has turned into the most buzzing and meme-able moment of 2024.

Although the claims still remain unconfirmed, that hasn’t stopped avid internet users from posting about them online.

From King Charles’s cancer diagnosis to Kate Middleton’s whereabouts, it’s been an eventful year for the British Royal Family. In February, Buckingham Palace shocked people after announcing that King Charles III was diagnosed with a form of cancer less than 18 months into his reign.

The Royal Announcement hashtag on X (formerly Twitter) has upset the internet. Why? Because it contains no real information or announcements about Kate Middleton or King Charles. Instead, it’s jam-packed with jokes and memes.

Earlier today, #RoyalAnnouncement was the number one trend on X. As a result, users began to expect an actual announcement from Buckingham Palace. When that announcement never came, many were outraged.

Any avid X user will tell you that the platform loves its jokes. So, as expected, the Royal Announcement hashtag was jam-packed with humor and memes.

These Memes Of Prince Louis & The Rest Of The Royal Fam At The Coronation Are Too Good

The Force is strong with Charlotte and Louis.

King Charles’ coronation was a terribly solemn, historic event. The former Prince of Wales was taken by gold coach to Westminster Abbey to be crowned as King Charles III after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II last September. People lined the rainy streets of London to watch the first coronation in seven decades, to see the entire royal family out in full force to support the new monarch. But let’s be honest; mostly we were all in it for all the memes coming out of the coronation, particularly memes about the royal kids. We just can’t get enough.

All three of the Wales children, 9-year-old Prince George, 8-year-old Princess Charlotte, and 5-year-old Prince Louis, were on hand to see their grandfather, as well as Queen Camilla, be crowned on Saturday, and for the most part they were on their best behavior. Even little Prince Louis , unfortunately. But there were still plenty of meme-worthy moments throughout the coronation, particularly with Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte.

Their coronation outfits, for example, had people thinking about Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker from the original Star Wars trilogy, and once you see it you can’t unsee it.

Another meme noted the similarity to Prince Louis’ coronation outfit and Skywalker’s jedi training look, leaving us wondering if this could be his future vocation. The hair and the face certainly helped the comparison.

Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte holding hands at Westminster Abbey, not to mention Princess Charlotte’s white dress and very Leia-like braids, sealed the deal on that Star Wars analogy.

The Wales family caused the slightest of hiccups to the day’s events by arriving a bit after King Charles at the coronation, and the looks on Prince William and Kate Middleton’s faces on arrival looked familiar to any family who ever fought in the car on the way to an event.

Prince Louis, who has basically become his own royal meme generator, inspired a short video of his best moments on the balcony at Buckingham Palace including a slow clap, a dance, and a two-handed wave.

The Wales family weren’t the only ones to inspire memes. While the coronation is an ancient and solemn event, social media users couldn’t help poking gentle fun at some of the more ostentatious elements of King Charles’ ceremony. Especially when the newly crowned king held not one but two sceptres looking incredibly serious.

Another meme joked about King Charles’ gloves at the coronation, wondering if perhaps he might have something to take out of the oven after the day’s events.

Prince Harry’s appearance at the coronation after the release of his memoir Spare did not go unnoticed on social media either. One Twitter user even fiddled with an image from the coronation to make it look as though King Charles was reading a copy of Spare .

Another Twitter user wondered if Princess Anne’s coronation hat , topped with a red feather, was not chosen specifically to mar Prince Harry’s view of his father’s coronation.

Prince Harry’s brief visit to the U.K. for his father’s coronation was certainly a big deal, but ultimately no one could outshine Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis . The Force is strong with them.

Prince William and the Princess of Wales will be looking to focus attention on their Earthshot Prize for environmental innovators when they make their first visit to the United States in eight years this week , a trip clouded by tensions with William’s brother, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan, who have criticized Britain’s royal family in the American media.

William and his wife, Kate Middleton, will travel to Boston on Wednesday for three days of public engagements before announcing the prize winners on Friday in a ceremony headlined by pop star Billie Eilish.

Boston, birthplace of John F. Kennedy, was chosen to host the second annual prize ceremony because the late president’s 1962 “moonshot” speech inspired the prince and his partners to set a similar goal for finding solutions to climate change and other environmental problems by 2030. The first Earthshot Prizes were awarded last year in London just before the U.K. hosted the COP26 climate conference.

What Is the Earthshot Prize?

The Earthshot prize was founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation in 2020. It was inspired by and with a name echoing President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge to America to land a man on the moon by that decade’s end, and aims to “discover and scale the best solutions to help repair our planet within the next decade,” according to a release.

Earthshot offers 1 million pounds ($1.2 million) in prize money to the winners of five separate categories: nature protection, clean air, ocean revival, waste elimination and climate change. The winners and all 15 finalists also receive help in expanding their projects to meet global demand.

Among the finalists is a startup from Kenya that aims to provide cleaner-burning stoves to make cooking safer and reduce indoor air pollution. It was the brainchild of Charlot Magayi, who grew up in one of Nairobi’s largest slums and sold charcoal for fuel.

When her daughter was severely burned by a charcoal-fired stove in 2012, she developed a stove that uses a safer fuel made from a combination of charcoal, wood and sugarcane. The stoves cut costs for users, reduce toxic emissions and lower the risk of burns, Magayi says.

Other finalists include Fleather, a project in India that creates an alternative to leather out of floral waste; Hutan, an effort to protect orangutans in Malaysia; and SeaForester, which seeks to restore kelp forests that capture carbon and promote biodiversity.

The winners will be announced Friday at Boston’s MGM Music Hall as part of a glitzy show headlined by numerous celebrities. The ceremony will be broadcast Sunday on the BBC in the U.K., PBS in the U.S. and Multichoice across Africa.

Hollywood Descends on Boston

Numerous A-list celebrities are headed to Boston this week to join the Prince and Princess of Wales at the Earthshot Prize Awards.

Billie Eilish is among the singers who will take the stage at the MGM Music Hall in Fenway on Friday for the awards show, at which five people will receive $1 million for their environmental projects. Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek will be presenting one of the awards, along with Princess Catherine and other stars.

The awards show will be co-hosted by actor Daniel Dae Kim and British TV presenter Clara Amfo, which won't air in the U.S. until Monday.

Performing along with Eilish and her brother, Finneas, will be Annie Lennox, Chloe x Halle and Ellie Goulding, according to a news release. Other celebrities presenting awards include actors Catherine O’Hara and Shailene Woodley.

Sir David Attenborough, the naturalist and documentary filmmaker behind shows like "Planet Earth," will appear in the ceremony, and Prince William will give a speech closing out the show.

Royal Drama?

As much as the royals try to focus on the prize, William is likely to face questions about Harry and Meghan, who have criticized the royal family for racism and insensitive treatment in interviews with Oprah Winfrey and other U.S. media. The Netflix series “The Crown” has also resurrected some of the more troubled times of the House of Windsor just as the royal family tries to show that it remains relevant in modern, multicultural Britain following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“You could say that the royal family, particularly as far as America is concerned, have had a bit of a bumpy ride of late,” said Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty Magazine. “They’ve come in for huge amounts of criticism on the back of ‘The Crown’ and also the Oprah Winfrey interview, which has not particularly reflected well on the House of Windsor, so I think it’s a good opportunity whilst they’re in the U.S. … to sort of redress the balance if at all possible.’’

What Do the Royals Have Planned While in Boston?

Whatever those efforts are, they will take place in and around Boston, where William and Kate will remain for their entire visit.

The royal couple will keep the focus on environmental issues, meeting with local organizations responding to rising sea levels in Boston and visiting Greentown Labs in Somerville, an incubator hub where local entrepreneurs are working on projects to combat climate change.

But they will also address broader issues, using their star power to highlight the work of Chelsea's Roca Inc., which tries to improve the lives of young people by addressing issues such as racism, poverty and incarceration. They will also visit Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, a leader on research into the long-term impact of early childhood experiences. The Harvard Center has a long relationship with The Royal Foundation and The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

William and Kate will also meet with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu at an event that is open to the public at City Hall Plaza and visit the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library and Museum with the late president’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy.

“The prince and princess are looking forward to spending time in Boston, and to learning more about the issues that are affecting local people, as well as to celebrating the incredible climate solutions that will be spotlighted through the Earthshot Prize,” their Kensington Palace office said in a statement.

The Royal Family’s Instagram Account Just Made a Joke About the Roman Empire

They know their internet memes.

We turn to the royal family Instagram page for regular updates on King Charles , Queen Camilla and more, but sometimes, we get a little surprise from the account runners.

In a recent post , the royal family announced a new Roman garden that was unveiled by Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, earlier this week. Seems normal enough, right? Imagine our surprise when the caption featured a cheeky reference to the recent “Roman Empire” internet trend .

“Talking of the Roman Empire…” the caption began. “The Duke of Gloucester has officially opened a new formal Roman garden outside the reconstructed Roman villa at Butser Ancient Farm in East Hampshire. His Royal Highness’s visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of the construction of Butser’s villa, which was built based on the archaeology of Sparsholt Roman Villa near Winchester.”

In case you're unaware, the “Roman Empire” trend began when women on TikTok started asking the men in their life how often they think about the Roman Empire. Turns out, many of these husbands, dads, brothers and friends think about it often.

Royal followers loved the reference to the meme, like one user, who commented, “Love to see the Duke on the socials! And LOVE the humour of the post. Well done!” Another follower wrote, “The Roman empire!!!!!!! [laughing emojis] Whoever runs their social media needs a raise stat!”

While Prince Richard helped unveil the new garden, the caption also noted: “The Duke, who has had a career in architecture and a strong interest in historic buildings, heard more about the development of building technology and house construction on a tour of the farm.”

FYI: The Duke of Gloucester is the youngest of King George V and Queen Mary’s nine grandchildren. He is currently 31st in the line of succession to the British throne .

All Hail Charles, the Unmemeable King

Maybe it’s the sourpuss attitude. Maybe it’s the sincerity with which he campaigns for the countryside, rather than just shouting “cows” joyfully when confronted by them. Maybe it’s a general diminishment of interest in British royalty. Maybe it’s the  gold state coach and  cloak at a time when millions of UK adults are unable to afford  essential hygiene products .

But today, as King Charles III is crowned in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, the response of the internet’s meme-makers will feel muted in comparison to the one enjoyed by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was  a meme queen we all stanned .

On the face of it, King Charles should be an ideal candidate for memedom. He has unnervingly red, rotund,  sausage fingers . He has a cartoonish visage, lampooned for years by cartoonists  and eBay sellers , with jug-handle ears and a hangdog, sullen expression. He has an unnerving, innocent, naive approach to life that leads him to say outlandish things, which often come back to bite him. He once, reportedly,  shrieked when he first saw plastic wrap.

Charles’ 1989 declaration that he was so infatuated with Camilla, who will become queen this Saturday, that he wanted to be  reincarnated as a tampon so he could forever live inside her, has  big dril energy .

Yet none of that has cut through to make Charles a perennial internet fave. Even attempts at  internet traffic-catching roundups of the best King Charles memes are … underwhelming, and often not really about the man himself.

“He's not publicly weird enough to be endearing, but he’s also not like a patriarch because he's too weird to give off being normal,” says Hussein Kesvani, a journalist and podcaster specializing in digital culture. “When it comes to being popular online, especially cross-audiences, you need to have a malleable weirdness that makes you endearing as a subject or a feature.”

Perhaps the tally of “good-weird” when it comes to evaluating Charles’s suitability for memedom is outweighed by the tally of “bad-weird.” He has always been portrayed as problematic compared to his ex-wife, Princess Diana, who died in a 1997 car crash. He has  been willing to intervene in politics in a way that unelected members of the royal family have tried to avoid. He has  an unfortunate habit of accepting cash donations in suitcases and grocery bags from Middle Eastern sheikhs.

And perhaps he’s suffering from the problem likely to blight his reign: He spent much of his life playing second fiddle to Queen Elizabeth, living in her shadow and being unable to develop much of a kingly standing of his own in the public’s eyes. “The queen was around for a very long time,” says Jeremy Blackburn, an assistant professor in computer science at Binghamton University and cofounder of the iDRAMA Lab, which looks at memes on the web. “So there was a long history that people had to draw from there.”

While Queen Elizabeth II was seen as a grandmother figure to the world, an innocent, sweet old lady, like Angela Lansbury but with palaces, Charles has long been seen—likely incorrectly—as waiting for his mother to give him his time to shine.

To be memeable, royals have to be likable, which is where the previous queen excelled—mostly. “Usually, they have to do something [to become a meme],” says Blackburn. “What is Charles known for? He’s known for the Diana thing. That’s not a positive meme. Then he was in the background for a lot of time. His kids are around now and seem to be more likable and interesting than him. The guy is not an interesting fellow. And the country’s not in good shape.”

The public knew the queen—at least the concept of her. She was canny enough not to give much away about her views in public, allowing the world to project onto her whatever they wanted,  sometimes literally , which made her ripe for internet ribbing. Part of her success was that she was an older woman who sometimes was quirky.

The problem is that the public knows Charles—or at least think they do—based on his years of waiting in the wings. While the queen came fully formed as monarch at age 25, Charles is trying to adopt the role of king after decades spent as a comparatively outspoken campaigner. We know  what he likes and definitely know  what he doesn’t , which makes it harder for people to accept him as a blank canvas. “I don’t think the new guy is very endearing,” says Blackburn. “What are you going to say about him? His mom was queen for basically as long as everybody was alive, and now he’s prancing around like he [has been king for just as long].”

Gender also likely plays a role. That he’s a man hinders people’s ability to think of him positively in the same way they did the queen, says Alex Turvy, a meme researcher at Tulane University in New Orleans. “He's a reminder of the literal patriarchy,” he says. “Seeing that face, for some reason, sort of reminds you of the ugliness of colonialism, and the state hoarding all of this wealth.”
